Necromancer is THE single class not used in organized group play. Nothing in that regard has changed since launch

Any reason… why none of that has changed? Seems odd to let something flounder that long.

Bad in what sense?

I was discussing character ideas with a friend and they were under the impression necromancers struggled to be effective in high-end PvE because of some sort of problem with conditions and had issues in PvP for similar reasons and generally were forced into odd roles.

How long has it been since you played?

A couple weeks after launch, which is why I am skeptical of said friend’s assessment (hard to believe that a class would be underperforming for almost two years straight)

Obviously we come from very different perspectives – what would your thoughts be on the function and point of clones?

I think it should depend on spec. I frankly, like the style you’ve described (pure deception), but I also think that a more clone centric build utilizing them as DPS aides should be functional too.

If I were behind design, I’d probably up the clone cap (and maybe untie them from targets or make them easier to generate), but make Phantasms cost two slots. Then improve trait support for default clones and phantasms to make them more defined build choices (while still leaving shatter or cloneless specs largely intact).

What exactly were you expecting? Honestly?

I think you have a point insofar as Thief being the most build restricted class from a design standpoint, but I’m still wondering what you were expecting, because debuffing or bursting pretty much defines the archetype, but you apparently weren’t looking for either of those.

The fundamental problem here is that support isn’t awarded for kitten. Anet needs to find a way to address that.

doesn’t mean they are playing the Guardian wrong

They’re looking for ranged DPS on a class that doesn’t have access to good ranged DPS. It’d be like me complaining that I can’t play my Thief as a buffbot.

Get rid of damage from phantasms – Phantasms deal no damage, but when placed on a target either increase the ability of the Mesmer to deal damage against them or cause denial/reactive punishment for certain target behaviour, or both;
Get rid of damage from clones – Clones deal no damage, bleeding or other conditions, but are tweaked to more deliberately serve their function as defensive tools of deception that are intended to absorb attacks;

These suggestions just wreck the idea of clone heavy or phantasm heavy builds though, which is sort of a key feature of the class.

Heck, if anything Clone damage needs to be higher (or you need to be able to field more of them).

Why I find the Mesmer badly designed

squiggit.2357

Seems like this thread has a bad case of people throwing around “bad design” to try to put weight behind arguments when most of the stuff they’re complaining about is preferential.

Once you’ve traited towards one or the other, you’re so heavily weighted towards your choice that there is no longer a decision to make.

Ignoring for a moment that that’s not entirely true, why is it a bad thing to be able to specialize?

Phantasms feel like pets
We’re not a pet class, but Phantasms play as if they are pets or turrets. It’s no fun to have so much of our damage come from Phantasms when we’re not really supposed to be a “summoner”.

Not sure why you don’t think Mesmers are “summoners” when the core mechanic of the class is summoning minions.

The only real compelling argument here is that trying to use raw clones as a weapon isn’t a very good strategy because their damage is so low and you can have so few active at once (for the damage they deal) and of course, they melt on target death.

Lag and bad design kinda ruins the game

I rarely encounter much lag. Even when we had all three servers in our WvWvW zerging the same point at the same time (With dozens of siege engines) the game barely hitched. Though I do run into character fade issues fairly frequently.

Seems like a smart tactic to me. Rather than split your resources on two fronts, collude to strength both your positions.

We had this happen the other day on Sorrow’s Furnace, where both Sanctum of Rall and Darkhaven stopped attacking each other to siege our keep and towers from multiple directions at once. It worked really well and the keep we’d been holding for a long while fell within an hour.

The problem I have with the Zerg isn't the Zerg itself

in WvW

Posted by: squiggit.2357

squiggit.2357

Zerging bases for attack/defense is fine. It’s cool. It can be really epic in evenly matched circumstances.

The problem I have here is that doing anything other than Zerging is essentially a waste of time.

Sure, you’ll occasionally have a a small raiding party snatching up supply camps and sentry points and taking down stragglers, but beyond that?

There’s all sorts of things you can do in WvWvW. Things that will help your team win in the long run with a decent amount of coordination. Active defense, scouting, repairing and rebuilding fortifications, protecting and transferring supplies.

The commonality here though is that all of these things also happen to give somewhere between zero and virtually zero rewards.

When you combine with the fact that a given objective has no immediate strategic value beyond map control, it basically leaves Zerging back and forth between bases as the only way to play the game.

Like I said, don’t get me wrong, Zerging can be fun. I just wish some of the other options available to players weren’t so punishing to do.

Outmanned gives a scaling stat multiplier.

Orbs give you more money, experience, karma, and loot. And maybe some minor point bonuses too. Minor.

Fixes the issue of zerging orbs early game to give you a tremendous advantage throughout the rest of the week (though honestly I think this issue is really overstate), and fixes the issue of Outmanned not really helping at all, without making the orbs a null factor, because everyone loves more money.

Less Battlefield, more RvR

squiggit.2357

I don’t think making the maps bigger is the right solution. The complaints about objectives being too close together would just be replaced with complaints about there being too much useless space. The issue with attackers being able to change targets too quickly is just replaced with the issue of objectives being so far apart that the defenders can’t adequately defend them.

I primarily, the best way to address this ‘issue’ in WvWvW is to come up with some way to tie in objectives to the actual game itself. Right now other than supply camps, each individual objective doesn’t really -do- anything for you, other than give you more points.

I’m honestly not sure what could be done here, but conditional respawns or some other objective oriented buff could go a long way here. Right now all holding a Tower does is offer some more map control which just allows me to start trying to take the next tower in line so I can get more points.

The other problem I see here is that the mentality of Zerging from base to base to base attacking/defending is too good because doing anything other than zerging nets you virtually no benefit. I mean sure, you can make a small warband to raid supply bases and sentires, but other than that? There’s not many other options to do, as active defense gives no benefits and repairing/rebuilding fortifications gives peanuts.

a tower shouldn’t fall in less than 5 minutes. And currently that’s the case.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tower drop that fast unless someone has their head in theirkitten

Hell, last night it took BOTH of the enemy realms working in collusion nearly three hours to take our tower.

Maybe if you just completely abandon the place I suppose.

From what I’ve noticed?

A lot of the times, the losing servers don’t really acknowledge the score when making their plans.

i.e. I see the two losing servers hitting each other as hard as they can, keeping supply and manpower tied up, which just gives the winning server more time to secure their position and become even stronger.

On the other hand. Last night I was playing WvWvW and my server was in the lead by a decent margin.

The other two servers decided to temporarily stop pressuring each other and ended up hitting our main keep from both sides. Within two or three hours we were basically pushed back to our spawn and the scores were slowly creeping towards even.

Sorry – but I don’t think AoEs should have an infinite vertical range.

I don’t think it would be that bad if AoEs had vertical range in both directions. The problem is that if you’re on the wall, the game accounts for the distance downward as part of your max range, while it appears to not do the same while firing upwards.

Naw. It’s much more than that.. Pretty much every profession forum is whining about something bad about their class, either about them being broken in some way (Guardian, Necro, Ele, Engi ) or too hard to play ( Necro, Ele, Engi, Mesmer ), or having too many trash options ( Necro, Engi, Warrior, Guardian).

No. Bad design would be not providing different levels of options for different players. If you don’t like the hard thing, play an easy thing, don’t mess it up for everyone else (though honestly the skill ceiling bit is really exaggerated anyways, and if you really can’t handle it, you can just go scepter or staff and button mash and do decently with an Ele, so it’s not that big of a deal)

Naturally I was pretty disappointed when I saw what the Guardian actually gets for their shield moves, which are sadly not only not very strong, but conceptually low impact too (hell, 5 is basically a worse version of the Engi’s shield 4 but with a bigger AoE)

Not to mention all the really really bad ones like “Might makes me right”

edit: Oh. I’ve actually thought a couple times of rerolling my Norn Guardian because of how… pathetic her “Shout” lines are.

“Stand your Ground/Save Yourselves”… is delivered like she’s about to fall asleep. The other guardians I’ve tried (human female, Charr Male, Asura male) all sound much bolder and much like the you’d imagine they should. The Charr barks out orders. The human offers a defiant rallying cry. The Asura sounds confident and self assured.

The Norn girl? She’s barely even paying attention. I can’t tell if she’s just a ditz or if she’s falling asleep, but it’skittenannoying.

Don’t even get me started on the atrocity that is the “New Land? New Land!” line.

I’d really like it too. I admit when the game first came out I was kind of in a rush to make certain characters so as not to lose names I wanted (and because I wanted to play) and am now slightly dis-satisfied with looks.

Being able to change accessory colors more frequently than a full recustomization would be much appreciated too, given how accessory colors are restricted and often end up looking bad later in the game when you have fancier armor and fancier dyes.

Maybe. I’m most just curious to see what people think about how each class performs and whether there are any that people find particularly strong or weak.

Personally I’ve found things to be not too bad, though I have noticed that within classes, certain playstyles tend to heavily fall out of favor ( short range specs for non-thief non-warrior classes seem notably weak. But maybe I just haven’t figured it out yet)

It’s the same as in PvE, if you die a lot and don’t kill stuff/complete events, you’ll end up losing money. Why should it be any different?

You have much less control in WvW. Particularly if you’re a melee class or in a bad server matchup or trying to defend losing territory. Chances are in any of those situations you’re going to die a lot, or avoid them… and I’m not sure encouraging players to avoid those things is good for the health of the system.
