Some Questions About Stacking

Thanks so much for the input so far, everybody. I know the mesmer is a GS shatter mes, but does actually have a sword and focus they use occasionally too, so getting them to use that or swap in two swords for the extra block. They’re a pretty decent player (the whole group is pretty skilled, to take nothing from them), so I’m hoping this works towards better group cohesion.

Some Questions About Stacking

My small, but active guild is working on getting our members dungeons that are often not done in PuG’s, so they can get the Dungeon Master Achievement. This of course, has led to something of a learning curve, because before this point, most of us are somewhere between casual and hardcore, where we work for good exotic/ascended gear, but don’t live to play the game. Players are reasonably skilled, and pay attention to good strategy, which leads me to my question.

We, as a group understand the value of stacking for certain bosses, in order to spread buffs around, etc. That part of the tactic is not in question, however the mesmer in our group, when stacking is done, almost always dies, or comes close to it. One of our guildmates (our dungeon-running guardian) has suggested that this has something to do with them being just outside the hitbox, where because the amount of damage the mesmer does, gets them stomped right through the stack, rather than the bigger norn guardian being hit first. This has prompted the mesmer to want to attack outside of the stack, rather than getting stomped in the stack. This tactic has largely been fine, but the guardian believes this is making keeping the group as a whole alive, a problem.

So, I’m looking for some sound tactical advice here. Is it OK for the mesmer to stay out of the stack (after, say initial LoS pulls, etc.) or do they need to stay in the stack, no matter what happens?

I would love to learn how to do the legitimate solo. Tried doing path two with a full group and we kept getting stomped on the last turn before you get away from the spiders/aboms and into the undead again. Was able, however to sneak past most of it alone on my thief, just to see what was going on, and how far we actually had to go. Anybody have an up-to-date guide to this?

Without diving into the mire of some of this commentary, I think a lot of this could be fixed with simply more choices. I don’t mind the new system, though I don’t find the rewards as stellar as they were sold to be. I’m sort of like, ‘meh’ when I get them. If we got things like Black Lion keys or makeover kits, you’d suddenly have people a lot more interested in the rewards, I feel.

Raffle: Flameseeker Prophecies

I would do this. I’m trying to build Flameseeker Prophecies right now as it happens. This will be my first legendary once I finish this. However, I would suggest a few things:

1. Limit how much people can throw into the raffle bucket. Say, 10 gold or whatever, that way the odds are not terribly lopsided against people who don’t have 500 gold laying around to throw at things.

2. Be very public and transparent about it. Make a date for the raffle-off, post about it here on the forums and do the actual thing someplace like Lion’s Arch, where people can see what’s going on. Make a little event out of it in other words.

Good luck with whatever you do.

My suggestion to fix this is a simple one, that I think most have already voiced support for; hit the rollback switch. Just put the system back the way it was. It wasn’t broken. It wasn’t hard to use.

There comes a time that you must make people take the learning curve, rather than simplifying something into lack of choice. Instead of this current system, simply make very easy to read, understand and find Help buttons for those who are somehow unable to use the old, perfectly good system.

Signed,

There was, in my opinion nothing wrong with the old system. This makes it a greater inconvenience to those of us who might simply want something small, and do not need/want to spend a bulk transaction. I understand simplifying things, but to be honest, there comes a point you must take confidence in a person’s ability to read, comprehend and follow instructions, rather than making something so ‘simple’ that it takes away the ability of choice.

Thanks for reading, whatever the case.

Does the issue also emerge without sweetfx? It might be that this kind of dll injection is malfunctioning gw2’s shader instructions.

Yes it does. I installed sweetFX to address the artifact problem, as suggested in earlier posts, and it did seem to help a bit. Originally, no sweetFX, just the stock game. No other mods or overlays. Other games work fine, even after hours of play. This is why I think something’s changed in GW2 that, hopefully I can catch.

Coming back to this, not as fixed as I thought. Artifacts are simply much less using sweetFX, but still show up. As stated, FXAA is off. Still tinkering with this and looking for suggestions that aren’t ‘replace the video card.’ The card I’m 100% sure now is not the problem, since it’s playing other games with no issues.

Score. But the thing I had to do was disable FXAA in both sweetFX and in GW2 and used just the smaa, and the -forwardrenderer switch. Artifacts gone. Weird, but wow it looks good now too!

Strange Graphical Artifacts

I had posted this in another thread, but decided it would probably better to make my own so I deleted that post. Basically, what’s going on here is I’m getting really strange graphical artifacts in-game, since the last small ‘fix-it’ patch as best as I can recall. Screenshots below:

http://www.mejuba.com/albums/tasaunders/249410/10868464/show/original

http://www.mejuba.com/albums/tasaunders/249410/10868836/show/original

System Specs:
Video: AMD HD7870 GHz Edition 2GB (PowerColor w/ a factory overclock, Pitcairn chipset).
Video Driver: Catalyst 14.4 (tested beta drivers and downgraded to 13.2 for testing).
Processor: AMD FX-8320 Vishara
RAM: 12 GB g.skill Ripjaws
Motherboard: Biostar TA-970
OS: Win 7 Ultimate

I also found that using the switch -forwardrenderer seemed to cut down the amount of artifacts, but by no means stopped them all. I’ve tested all my other games extensively, including SWTOR, Smite, Battlefield 3, Firefall and Path of Exile and none of those games are showing any artifacts.

Things I’ve Already Done
1. Checked for overheating (everything’s running very cool. Case is well ventilated).
2. Video Card defect: Stress tested in Furmark. Everything’s fine there.
3. Checked voltage.
4. Deleted GW2 .dat files.
5. Clean install of the drivers.
6. Tested beta drivers.
7. Used older drivers.
8. Checked the RAM.
9. Did DirectX Diagnostics.

May try a few other things, but I’m open to suggestions. I’ll post my DirectX diagnostics report in the reply to this post. I’m honestly stumped.

1. Exploration: Huge sections of the map are left untouched. After a year, it’s time to let us wander and be amazed again.

2. Personal Story, Part II/Storytelling: It’s time for our heroes to shine and not be second fiddle to a lackluster NPC. There are also other dragons out there that need killing.

3. Difficulty Balancing/Hard Mode: The average player who’s using the LFG tool is not going to find a group capable of handling some of this harder content both in dungeons and in the open world. Suggest offering a hard mode with greater rewards for the increased difficulty for organized groups/guilds, while leaving a normal mode for casuals who just want to play and aren’t interested in complicated encounters.

Running a Phenom II 3.4Ghz Denlab Black Edition processor, 8 gigs of G.Skill ram with a Nvidia GTX 550ti (EVGA OC edition). Workhorse processor circa 2009 and a somewhat out of date video card. This machine runs GW2 like clockwork. Teq at max settings? No problem. Packs of invading WvW’ers? Not an issue. Hordes of hungry Quaggans? Easy. Know what makes this machine go mildly nutty? When Fire Elemental spawns. I get a half-second of video lag. Point is I think there’s more optimizing to be done, but I don’t think it’s half as bad as people are saying.

Why is Performance Never/Rarely Addressed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: tasaunders.3746

tasaunders.3746

I don’t have an amazing PC by any means (a Phenom II X4 @ 3.3Ghz, Radeon HD 7850, 8GB of RAM), but performance in a lot of cases is lower-than-expected, especially during world events and WvW. I’ve tried plenty of different drivers, OS setups, settings, etc. but I’m 99% sure my processor is the bottleneck.

Processor is definitely not the bottleneck. I’m running a very similar setup, Phenom II X4 Black edition 3.4 Ghz with an EVGA Nvidia 550 ti OC and 8 GB of G.Skill ram and a Biostar TA970 MB and I run the game on max settings with almost no problems. Aside of the stock overclock on the video card, I’m not overclocking anything and I hover around 50-60 FPS except in LA or the very busiest of WvW places, but never drops below say 25ish that I’ve witnessed. Even with the recent Scarlet invasion events, I had no problems on max settings.

While I don’t disagree that there could be more performance tuning done (I’m looking at you randomly invisible floor in Divinity’s Reach), I don’t think your system is either awful or under-powered for this particular game.

The funny thing is people used to do it the old, slow, way when there wasn’t even a title. You got absolutely nothing to show for all those hours but a level 20 character in a starter area and the knowledge that you’d done it.

And now people complain that it’s not worth making a legendary weapon because you don’t get enough achievement points for it…

I didn’t know there was a point where there wasn’t a title. Wow. See, for me part of playing any MMO is the sense of accomplishment. I think with GW2 Legendaries people complain about it not feeling like a legendary-worthy task. Its a griiiiiind. Still doing mine though.

Thanks! Yeah I’m a 3 year player. Not as much most, but I still find things to do in the original now and again. I’m working on a Legendary in GW2 as well. Going to attempt to make the ‘Flameseeker Prophecies.’ Love the name and it’ll be a great shield for my Guardian.

got to lvl 19 death lvln, but was happy to see the quest. I have to agree, death leveling was not hard at all once you learn the pulls. Pulling a group leaving pc on overnight, hoping you don’t dc. which i did many times. Is not by any stretch of the imagination hard. imo, harder no, much much much longer certainly.

Now I don’t want to be a hypocrite here, I did not like it when they changed drunk. And not make people spend the same amount of time. Guess one could say it would seem I have a double standard. lol,
GZ to op, good to see people still playing and working of the titles in GW.

I always thought death leveling was kind of a weird way to achieve that title. Amazing you did it that way, I just wouldn’t have had the patience.

Is Scarlet a Villain Sue? [Merged ]

in Clockwork Chaos

Posted by: tasaunders.3746

tasaunders.3746

I think Scarlet is a Villain Sue and that was entirely the point. She was meant to be a ridiculous, over the top and cliche villain. Not meant to be taken seriously and probably not the ‘nemesis’ we’ve been getting hinted at getting. Some part of me wonders if this sacrificial train of Sylvari villains to kill is the ANet Writing team’s effort to let us vent some of that Trahearne anger.

I don’t mind the Living Story. I don’t. Some parts of it have been more engaging than others but not terrible or game-breaking. The problem I think is two-fold: 1. IMO the community is ready to get back to killing dragons and the Living Story hasn’t really had much to do with that at all. 2. I think its time for a more substantial, serious villain. Personally, I feel a true villain, somebody we’ll love to hate and who outpaces the heroes of Tyria in both a meaningful and believable way is due.

Having said all that, I think it’d be kind of cool for ANet to give us a writing contest of some kind to decide the next villain in either the Living Story or possibly added to a dungeon or fractal.

I don't like this update

in Queen's Jubilee

Posted by: tasaunders.3746

tasaunders.3746

I hate jumping puzzles. I hate them in a way that makes me want to build an orbital particle weapon, launch it into space and shoot down every every jump puzzle in the game into a flat non-jump puzzle.

And you know, it feels darn good to say that. But that’s my taste. I prefer beating the crap out things and have it be challenging. I also liked the personal story, despite also believing that Trahearne should have been our second and not the other way around.

So, this is why I love the Queen’s Jubilee. I get to beat the snot out of things and feel pretty good about that. After the whole thing with Zephyr Sanctum and having the whole thing feel like a massive jump puzzle made to drive me into a psychotic rampage, I was pretty happy to have the opportunity to do some pretty gratifying smackdown that fell into a skillset I have. So I think the thing we have to take away from the Living Story is a little of this and a little of that.

Don’t like something? Don’t do it. It’s our responsibility as players to not kill ourselves trying to do content you don’t enjoy. Protest with not logging in to play or not participating in those events. I have to believe ANet has metrics to measure those sorts of things.

Oh and one other thing? I like the Living Story overall, but I didn’t buy this game to be welcome at Zephyr Sanctum. I bought it to put my toon’s boot on top of some jerk dragon’s head and take its lunch money. We really need to get back to that.

So Being 1-Shot is meant to be a Challenge?

Posted by: tasaunders.3746

tasaunders.3746

@Deimos Tel Arin: Yeah the first boss I beat pretty easily. But the rest of these jokers are a different story. Doing a lot better with my mesmer (using a combination of ‘zerker jewelry with Valkyrie armor and Runes of the Mesmer, Greatsword/Sword ’n Focus) than my heavily defensive and usually unkillable guardian. Still have a few more fights yet so we’ll see how those go.

So Being 1-Shot is meant to be a Challenge?

Posted by: tasaunders.3746

I’m not sure if this is even intentional, but a lot of these fights I end up winning in downed state. Happened once with my guardian and twice with my mesmer but I did win. Talk about seat of the pants.

These fights are hard. Very hard (and in some cases annoying), but not unwinnable. I pretty much relegate burning a ticket to learning the encounter then coming back with a different set of skills or a different character even, depending on what I think I’ll do best with. I was honestly surprised by the Gauntlet; I thought I was going to thump my way through with my guardian but that hasn’t been the case.

"Anything less than "Zerk" is being selfish"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: tasaunders.3746

tasaunders.3746

My mace ’n shield-wielding Guardian with all Power/Vitality/Healing and all survival traits saves groups. What that character lacks in overall damage, I make up for by being able to:

1. Live long enough to rez somebody who died.
2. In some cases, finish off a boss that will have to work harder at killing me.
3. Offer enough support to a group to make them live longer as a whole.

Those three reasons are enough for me, personally to justify not being a ‘zerker build with that toon and to me, exemplifies not being selfish. Of course, I’m not a real big fan of the speed runners either. I like to enjoy content, not blow through it.

Played another MMO for 10 min. back to GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

tasaunders.3746

I started playing MMOs with the original Everquest and stuck with it from Velious to Planes of Power, before moving onto WoW and played that till defeating Arthas. After WoW I really couldn’t even look at another MMO without being instantly repulsed by the idea of playing one.

Then my brother in law introduced me to GW1. It was different enough from a traditional MMO that I’ve stuck with it. I still play it on occasion since I’m working towards Legendary Defender of Ascalon. I also played GW2 since Beta2 and I’m still very much enthralled with this game.

I’ve also tried other MMO’s since. Both TERA and RIFT I’ve found astoundingly mediocre, though TERA has a few winning moments. I’ve also been playing Neverwinter Online from open beta to ‘release’ and while I enjoy the solo quest and the fighting mechanics of that game, the rest of it isn’t all that interesting to me. I said to my girlfriend the other night, GW2 really has spoiled me to all other MMO’s.

I think it’s important to try other games, you might find a gem, or you might be reminded why your favorite is your favorite.

Any plans to bring players back to Orr?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: tasaunders.3746

tasaunders.3746

Somebody else mentioned ‘phasing’ for the Orr zones like we saw in GW1 and the ‘Winds of Change’ series and I thought that was a great idea. Making new and potentially more difficult events is all well and fine, but moreover it seems to me we should be seeing some of the effects of destroying Zhaitan by now. It almost makes that final victory seem pointless and empty.

In introducing some measure of phasing the zones, you could then have different events you could write from scratch, keeping things new, fresh and interesting without sacrificing difficulty or the ‘end-game’ feel you intended for the areas. Yes, absolutely fighting in Orr shouldn’t be done yet, but I think more than anything, a sense of progression with nearly a year on the game would be a great experience. I’d imagine there’d be more fighting to do, but seeing a little bit of the former Orr trying to peek out of the darkness would be amazing.

Yeah the back banners. Ironically, I don’t think those would look too bad on a Charr, but pretty dumb on everybody else. I don’t see why they don’t give all the other races capes and implement something else for Charr that doesn’t clip. If you can give the same armor two different looks between genders, surely they can do a different look across races?

Silly reasons you won't play a race or class?

I won’t play a Sylvari. I can’t stand their dialog during quests and I can’t stand their voice acting. I blame Traherne for this mostly. ;D

[NOSTALGIA] Do you remember when...

I remember when…

I saw Divinity’s Reach for the first time, in Beta and thinking, “Wow…”

I also remember discovering how important repairing was!
http://www.mejuba.com/albums/tasaunders/134502/5127827/show/original

A good thing too, because I remember the first time Shadow Behemoth spawned and thought to myself, “Oh sh…!”

Finally, I remember the Hunger Games event (this really needs to come back as a playable mode, IMO).

Last Stand at Southsun: Feedback/Opinion

in Last Stand at Southsun

I’m sorry to say the whole Southsun Cove experience has been one disappointment after another and this latest addition was no exception. Thoughts below:

1. Canach and Sub-Director Null should have been either together in a soloable instance, or together in a group instance (preference for me would have been soloable). To introduce one NPC villain you have to defeat with a mechanic, then another with the exact same mechanic feels like a waste of time. One instance, give different fight mechanics for different villains. Make it interesting. Not repetitive, not gimmicky.

2. This content feels rushed and not up to the level of quality “Flame & Frost” was. I think that the May 14th patch and the May 28th patch should have been one patch, released together and given a little more love in the way of story-telling and transition. We go from events in “Flame & Frost” to Southsun and we’re not really given a solid connection. What I mean by that is, one or both of the NPC’s from “Flame & Frost” should have gone with the heroes to Southsun to check on things. This would have been a much better transition in than Lionguard whoever that we only know a little about, going to poke rabid monsters in Southsun.

3. Crab Toss: I thought this was fun, though not entertaining enough to hold my interest for more than a few rounds. I’m ‘OK’ at it, having gotten a lot of second and third places. I think the weapon variety could be a bit better but other than that, not an all together bad experience. Possibly the best part of Southsun to date.

4. Rewards: While the ‘Cthulhu Backpack’ was a great upgrade for my guardian, once I made it an ascended back piece, the stats for those not a bunker build are kind of worthless. Great for a skin if you have an ascended back item already, but there’s probably more people than not, that would have liked the chance to make a non-Fractal ascended back item that they could actually use. Similarly, I feel the same way about the other gear items added to the game. The mini is cute though.

Closing Thoughts: This latest batch of updates really needed a writer’s love. If you’re basing a game about the progression of a story through chapters (aka. The Living Story) you need to capture the imagination of those sinking their time and effort into following it. You’ve introduced some interesting characters with Eir’s son (whose name escapes me presently) and Rox and they should have come along to Southsun to check on the refugees they worked so kitten freeing. As a writer myself, I would kill for an opportunity to write a Living Story chapter so it makes me do the /headdesk every time a potentially awesome story like this gets turned into a Tyria B-Movie.

Looking forward to the next chapters and hopefully more from established characters.

Sorrow's Furnace: Paradise for PVE players?

Personally the bonuses don’t mean that much to me. I’d rather be in the next tier and find more challenges in WvW. (I’m from Sorrow’s Furnace btw.)

Such an outdated score post… Here is some actual points.

PS: Oh look, we’re outmanned!

At almost 2:30am EST, depending on which borderland you’re in, anybody can be outnumbered. I’d shrug too.

I’ve only really been recently getting involved in WvW but I’ve wildly enjoyed it. The guilds on SF are really supporting the effort to do better there and it’s shown. As for me, I’ve come across at least two people from FC that have been honorable and fought cleanly and fairly in occasions where I’ve been supply running, etc. and faced them 1v1. Lots of respect there to you guys.

I also really enjoyed holding off a ET mini-zerg at Danelon Passage with 3 other people and a ballista. There’s been good fighting all around from ET and FC.

worst class to use for jumping puzzles?

Warrior I’m finding to be much harder than my other characters for no other reason than the lack of a 25% movement speed option. Just have so much more control when you move 25% faster and none of the jumps feel like a near miss. I imagine Guardian would be just as bad since they also don’t have a movement buff.

Guardians have the ‘Retreat!’ shout and if they use a staff, they can throw down a group speed buff.

Please take your tinfoil hats off and be reasonable.

1. I made the mistake of drinking coffee while reading this. Forum crazies are crazy.
2. Now, I’d love to see tinfoil hats available in game. If you think about it, something like that would be an entirely Asura thing to invent.
3. Yeah, please no mounts.

Lucietta, my Guardian has been with me since BWE 2.

That screenshot was from the very end of BWE 2, right before the servers shut down.

This is a screenshot I took of her the other day, exploring the Sylvari starting area.

Bonus screenshot. This was taken during the BWE 2 ‘Hunger Games’ event.

This game is made for taking screenshots, so you can kind of live the moment again.

[Spoiler] I miss her and him, so much :(

There’s some veteran NPC that taunts you in…I think its Sparkfly Fen that says something to the tune of… ’ Sieran died horribly, blahblahblah and you’re about to join her!’ I think it’s some undead commander. Anyway, the point of me mentioning that was, I basically smashed this thing’s head in with berserk fury. I’d take Sieran or Tybalt over that inane, spineless necro-salad Trahearne anyday.

Guardian or Elementalist

tasaunders.3746

My main used to be an elementalist and while I still like the character, I prefer my guardian now. For me it came down to the amount of micromanagement I had to do for attunement dancing, vs. standing my ground and making things die. It really comes down to what your style of play is and what you like doing.

I don’t need to look anything up to know what should be done with him. Feed him to Jormag at the beginning of whatever personal story episodes come next. Problem solved.

If you lose to my Guardian 1v1 and you fought well, I will /bow. I didn’t realize they could even see emotes, until I had a warrior from Fergason’s Crossing do it to me, upon a rather close fight. It’s a good gesture and one I’m happy to do for players who fought well.

The Cantha Thread [Merged]

tasaunders.3746

Cantha was my favorite GW1 region to work on. And I worked on every GW release. I know a lot of the dev team loved it and would love to revisit it. I kinda agree with critickitten about the negative aspect of tight corridors. Most of that came from hitting technological limits while trying to keep the epic quality of the concept art. I think we could do some really amazing things with those themes in our new engine. Certainly nothing is ruled out. I certainly encourage anyone to express your desire for a Cantha region in GW2 in a positive and friendly way. It could be years away, but it’s worth asking for.

Given what you guys did with Divinity’s Reach and the sense of urban sprawl, Cantha done with the same ideas in mind would be amazing. You could give the sense of overcrowded streets without having them be a navigational nightmare. As a player of both GW1 and GW2, I’m all for a return to Cantha, especially after the build-up left for us in Winds of Change. As a writer, this is also easily my favorite part of the Tyria story. How’s that for positive?

Scaling Change Gone Too Far?

I agree with Nitram. If I want a challenge, I’ll be in level appropriate zones. If I’m in a low level zone, I expect to basically steam-roller whatever’s coming my way. My character is a hero, not some mutton-eating rube that just rolled off the cart, grabbed a pitchfork and started stabbing things with it.

That said, I’m still basically two-shotting things, but I found it a bit odd that creatures in Field of Ruin are hitting my tanking Guardian with a 30 valor/30 honor/10 virtues build harder than the zombie hookers in Orr. I think it’s fair to say the change is the right one, but needs to be adjusted a little more.
