Huh. I would have guessed this idea a little more popular. :/
Just give elementalists the downed skill of ‘Tactical Detonation’ whereby they sacrifice themselves in a fiery blast of ungodly damage to take out anything in very close proximity. Replace it with something more tame for PvP. That would be far more heroic than just dying.
Arguably you could give every class a heroic act ability. Thieves could have a bomb, warriors could become a berserker, guardians could become an avenging spirit, etc.
I would not like to instance raids. Coming from a hardcore EQ player.
If we were to develop hardcore (and no Orr isn’t hardcore at all) I would tell the devs to look at the first two raid zones EQ introduced. Plane of Fear and Plane of Hate.
Most people who remember Fear don’t immediately go to kill the main god or the demi’s, because the was shockingly not the most intense part of the zone.
You know what I remember from Plane of Fear? The Death Touches and the corpse runs. ;D Good times.
As a player of the first Guild Wars, I both loved and hated my heroes. Having to find skills across the globe aside, heroes were great for being able to command to a certain degree, to keep them from doing stupid things, like run into a pack of monsters or lure more in by randomly attacking. Having said all that, this is not a wishlist for heroes in GW2.
I do feel however, a similar system of micromanagement should be enabled for the personal story. Since they say, they’re ‘leaving it up to you,’ or ‘following your lead’ enough, why not give players the ability to keep these NPC’s from doing stupid things like they’re prone to do. This could potentially cut down on a lot of frustrating situations where mission failure happens because your NPC got stuck, or decided to stand in an AoE attack, etc.
This could also be applied to dungeon NPC’s where the party leader would have command over them. It might also be feasible to have them show up in a mini-window on the UI to better monitor their condition and the like. This would also be great to have for Dynamic Events but I couldn’t honestly think of a good way to implement that.
Anyway, food for thought.
I just tried to upvote this, like it was reddit. :/ Adding more emotes is definitely something we need!

I actually do better soloing with a staff than any other weapon combo, so I have to disagree. I find that using daggers/scepters/etc. is just asking to die to a close-range beat down. With a staff, you can kite, CC and take out a fairly large amount of enemies in little time. I should also mention that I use both Elemental Gylphs when I solo, so I almost always have a pet to help, but I can do without as well.
I’m running a 30 Fire/10 Air/10 Earth/20 Arcane build right now and I’m finding a moderate bit of survivability, without losing damage. I’m primarily a PvE’er and have no interest in playing a support build. I want to blow things up. Period.
I agree with the above poster in regards to Cursed Shores and similar places. We can win fights, but its with manic attunement switching and kiting that, may or may not have everything dead by the time things you killed to start begin respawning. I enjoy the challenge of it, but a little better damage mitigation would go a long way…something outside of being shuddered into a very heavy earth/water build.
We really need a decent, measurable, critically important reason to become more powerful.

Ironically, 5 years ago I didn’t sound like that. 5 years ago I was entrenched in Altrac Valley and other WoW battlegrounds. After farming Knight-Captain to get the stupid black battle cat, Blizz up and changed it so the rank didn’t mean anything. That pretty much killed MMO PvP for me. Used to PvP a bit in the original Everquest also.
It’s just done for me I guess. I don’t find it challenging or interesting. So long as it has its separate place like it does now, I’m a happy guy. Hope ANet never changes that.

Yeah, I’m also against world PvP. I don’t like PvP. I’m not interested in PvP. I find PvP in any form in an MMO to be a general waste of time. If I want to kill other players, I’ll go play an FPS online. I play MMO’s for the story, for questing and for exploring. So the ability to ignore PvP and enjoy the rest of the game is a godsend.
I’ve more or less soloed or duo’d to 69 on my elementalist and I can’t say I found it the struggle people keep saying it is. That said, I do feel there’s room for improvement. Elementalists need better inherit damage mitigation and could use a small damage boost overall. In situations where I can kite, I have few problems fighting even five or six enemies at a time. Boxed in some stupid mine tunnel or inside a house? It gets a little more interesting. Reminds me of my EQ wizard and quad-kiting the birds.
I personally don’t regret playing an elementalist. I was incredibly underwhelmed with the necromancer and I’m still forming an opinion about my mesmer, but I don’t think I would trade in my elementalist for one.
I find it easier to play other classes, but I can’t say I find Elementalists harder to kill things with. It requires knowing more about what the class can and can’t do, than say a Guardian, where nearly every button can kill something. And if you don’t know how to kite or the value of condition damage you’re probably going to die a lot.
My elementalist is level 67, really have no interest in PvP, so I can’t speak with any expertise on that, but as a staff elementalist, if you know how to work the attunement dance, you can kill a lot of things, fairly quickly and come out generally unscathed.
I think they need a little damage boost and a damage mitigation boost, but I wouldn’t say they’re weak. I feel a lot more fragile playing my thief, personally. My Guardian, conversely I feel like a steam-roller.
My level 69 Elementalist. Not using heritage anymore but this is still a good screenshot I think.
Edit: Better picture!

You could tote around a sword as an elementalist in GW1, I’d be all on board for a main hand sword or a greatsword in GW2. I’m not sure how I feel about both, but I think either MH sword or a greatsword is a great idea.
And hey, Gandalf carried around Glamdring, right?

Had the same experience with the small interface. Using an Nvidia GT 430 on an Intel Core 2 Duo running at 2.8GHz.
