Yo OP, stop being ignorant!! Stealth IS NOT THE SAME as it is in other MMOs, you stealth a thief and quickly drop an immob and burst on where they were they’ll die, I know, I’ve done it a multitude of times, the only thing stealth PREVENTS is 1) you being able to see them, and 2) moves that require a target (you know, all 6 of them).

On my engi I personally just use an AoE launch, like shield #4 or blowing up a turret so the thieves/mesmers stealth entirely goes to waste due to them cartwheeling through the air…

L2P, stop kittening about stealth, and that boon would make stealth STRONGER than it currently is -_-’

Could we please have an official ruling on whether the various zoom / FoV programs are within the T&C’s of the game. Many arguements and flaming of other servers are being caused by Anet refusing to answer this one simple question.

Please do not post opinions/arguements or any other comments, all we need is a simple yes or no from Anet themselves.

I do not know again how this bad of a design could find its way into the game.

I know that for some people it is a non-issue since they do their dmg in aoe manner or generally do not care if they are hitting from the back, front or side.

However, if you have to consistently land backstabs on something that looks like a little speck and is moving and you have no idea which way it is facing and you cannot even see when it is dodge rolling…..it really makes it much much much harder than playing against other models.

Players should not be getting huge advantage relative to others just due to the model choice.

i think having a class that can go invis is unfair , doing spike dmg while no one can see u is unfair, being able to land bleeds while invul and invis is beyond unfair. ur post is just silly. i think thieves should be banned from spvp

Unfortunately, free tournaments are anywhere from 2-15 minutes right now. There are just a lot of people doing team vs team.

I’m sorry you are having trouble with thieves but it is a L2P issue.
Even Jon said it was L2P issue and it was really hard to balance classes for people who haven’t taken the time to learn other class mechanics.
I play Ranger, DDele, Necro, Mesmer…

They could just get rid of all the healing power amulets in pvp.Stacking healing power turns 1.5k heals into 2.7k heals which is the real problem.

Ether renewal condition removal needs to be toned down but that’s really it.

In WvW the majority of the time I’m killed, it’s by thieves who are stealthed. Yet, it’s Ele’s that need nerfing? Riiiiiiiight…….

Quite obvious there’s someone high in the company that likes being a thief.

Too much “the sky is falling” mentality.

To put it simply, as stated previously, the SOTG discussion was very s/tPvP related. Coming from that, the question is field “What are you aiming to nerf?” The main theme was that the ele (particularly d/d bunker) has so many little things that come together to make them a little bit more efficient then they should be. That was basically it. He lists off boon duration, toughness, regen, mobility, etc.

Who is going to argue that that isn’t a relatively realistic perspective? It’s easy enough to see/experience. It comes down to a fundamental question of is it because they are better than they should be, or that other classes can’t counter them efficiently enough? Are they too strong, or are the rest too weak? There’s an ambiguous standard in play that requires definition for their to be balance, a standard that can only be truly explored and adjusted via real world application. Remember, the ele was brought up along with the ranger.

This sort of standard of balance is pliable to the circumstances of play. That is to say, balance in sPvP =/= PvE =/= WvW. If one fails to distinguish the circumstance and make appropriate adjustments, the system, the game, fails. In that sense, we as players cannot take this as a blanket remark, and must hope that the developers are able to make this distinction.

Again, this position from anet on this matter is ambiguous at best. Prior to the ele nerf statements in the video the dev was basically saying that they don’t want to destroy builds like the ranger and ele, just make them a little less efficient in some regards, and bring other classes up and give them option to counter, etc, and that they are being very careful with what they do in these regards. We can only hope there is some truth behind that.

Only 2 cantrips can be used for escaping, and it’s not practical to do so.

Perma vigor? what do you spam all your cantrips at once?

Nobody uses Protetive Shield anymore.

Final Shielding is bugged and pops half the time, if you get bursted too quickly it most likely won’t work (and i’m not talking about getting 2 shot here).

You don’t get enough trait points to get the luxury of having an extra shocking aura.

Hehe, Water Elemental is fun to use while holding points, that is if his heal doesn’t get canceled by the cc galore flying around. Most of the time I’d rather use Fire Ele to make up for the dps I lack.

Bottom line, my only complaint is the Final Shielding bug.

Personally, I think the Health should stay as it is. But overall, our defensive ability in most build is weak. I’d rather see more useful traits and improvement to skills, defensive or offensive, than just upping our Health to 13K like a Mesmer. I mean, there will always be a “weakest” profession Health and Armor wise. And personally, I have no problem with it being Ele. However, I do think that in PvP, Ele could use some improvements (which should also affect PvE of course).

mesmer has a weak hp base? with my mesmer im glass cannon and I has 21khp with berseker :P if i build him bunker holy *

bunker mesmer also has no hp about 17k even if u build for full hp its 26k hp with no atk pwr or defense so idk wut build ur running as bunker..

The 5v5 format does not work in hotjoin at all. That’s because there’s always people leaving, making it 4v4 or 3v3 a lot of time. I’d say that 6v6 would work better than both 8v8 and 5v5, due to the nature of hotjoin.

LoL works just fine and is very popular with just 1 map ! u cant afk/leave/talk kitten without the community of gammers enforcing rules..

there is a report for “afk” which i have seen ALOt lately in hotjoin and when i see someone is afk i hit the leave button making the 8v8 now 6 (1 afk) v8, cuz its such a pet peeve of mine i cant stand it and the fact that anet didnt bother to think of it is stupid.

From the get go, culling slowly killed the guild I came to this game with. We had 25 that had been playing together for years as a competitive PvP guild. Out of those 25, 2 of us still play this game and both of us still playing moved on to another guild.

Nobody likes fighting people they can’t see.

For the OP: I think you made some good points. I don’t think hotjoin should go away, but they do need to do something to create a transition from solo player to tournament team.

there is no gear grind in gw2 i got all my exotic gear from gold/karma which i already had long before i hit 80. by the time i hit 80 i already had my gear i had done maybe 2 dungeons 2-3x and wasnt about to repeat that process just for skins…

Agree with many of the OPs points – switching to PvE/WvW is not really a good suggestion because, for me, I like spvp because it doesn’t have the endless gear grind that most mmo’s have – I joined this game because you can jump right into pvp and be on a level playing field (gear/stats wise) with everybody else. I’m starting to try out wvw more and have found that it’s a lot more fun in a group even though i’m severely gimped at level 50ish… i know as soon as I get to 80 I"m going to want to gear grind to be viable in wvw and am not too keen on that idea…

there is NO gear grind by the time i hit 80 i could BUY end game gear with gold …. what grind are u refering to unless its just for skins?

I quit sPvP for the same reasons mostly and the boring conquest mode and no 2v2/3v3 death match/other modes so i can play with my friends instead of wasting hours and hours to try to find people.
To all who haven’t explored the other aspects of the game, PvE/WvWvW, i tell you, quit sPvP and join us! There’s where the game really is and it is awesome

pve = boring gw2 has some of the most boring grind WvW is just a larger version of Spvp only now they want u to run around in a bigger circle with a bigger zerg doing the exact same thing day in day out…

the only auto-defense the mesmer has is mirror of anguish, and is easily countered by D/P thieves ( new thief fotm) with a single head shot at the start of the fight, in order to avoid to have your basilisk venom reflected to you.

I thought we were talking about the classic D/D + Shortbow.

An easier fix would be to stop auto defense abilities like that happening from daze. You can still evade so it’s usually wasted. Also, like the above poster said, this also takes away the “I had no idea he was there” argument.

edit: another fix is to not allow backstab to land if stealth is technically broken. Steal dealing damage first should negate a backstab. Make people finish the backstab before they hit steal. This would let the runes counter the combo as backstab would drop many GC to ~20%. Steal can still be instant but the BS should try to divide by zero or something if it tries to do damage without stealth.

Steal-stab is done from stealth, it’s a D/X combo.

And the argument behind this is a lot more than “he’s not there”: we’re talking about being able to GLOBAL a proff in less than human reaction is able to calculate; it doesn’t matter if you know “he’s there” or not ( a D/P thief can stealth from BPS+ HS combo as much as he want, potentially postponing the burst as much as he wants, till the panicked guy finished blowing all his defensive CDs at nothing).

Breaking the combo will break the thief, since the whole profession is made of this broken burst.

Without compensations of any sort ( and they already destroyed the only alternative to burst, or rather S/D dazelock thieves), nerfing thief burst will simply make the whole profession to disappear from competitive play.

There’s really nothing to argue about the issue, the thief profession is simply not balanced ( like the warrior) , but has an even thinner foudnation than the war: basically, they should change A LOT this proff in order to make it balanced.

yup u can use pistal 5 and HS into it for 5sec of stealth AND if the HS lands it doesnt remove the stealth lol so free hit and u get stealth for another BS followed by 222222222222222222222222222222222

Disclaimer: No you can’t have my stuff… I love the game and will keep playing every other area of the game besides sPvP. I just wanted to share my opinion of why it’s so frustrating and I can’t be bothered to play it. I hope Anet can resolve the issues causing my frustrations and I hope the sPvP community will explode as a result. That said, here’s my rant…

It’s just too freaking frustrating to keep at it. I don’t have the rank, and to be honest, the skill to find a good tournament team. So my best bet right now is to try and solo queue frees in order to meet people and form a team. Unfortunately the queue is still too long (plus 4 minute prep time), and too often the first round will start 4v5 (I swear my last 5 games have been 4v5). So for now I’ve given up on playing tourneys. That leaves me to play hotjoin. When I play hotjoin I end up raging after about 30 minutes of 8v8 as it always turns into a zergfest that favors heavy aoe or burst classes. If I try 5v5 instead, there are rarely enough players to play consistent games because 8v8 is the default and frankly it’s easier to farm rank/glory in 8v8.

With all that in mind, here are my own opinions on how they could improve sPvP and win me back.

Tournaments: The free tournaments should be in the same format as paids. It really should be designed to act as practice for paids and an avenue for solo queue. I feel like both free and paids would benefit as 4 team tournaments (2 rounds). There are many potential benefits to this. First, free tournaments would have a quicker queue compared to how they are now. Second, both free and paids could use two maps per week rather than just one per week. Third, high ranked teams would automatically avoid the issue of playing the same team back to back.

Hotjoin: I’d love it if the 8v8 format was simply removed. But I understand some people might actually enjoy it (though I can’t imagine how) so at least it should be moved to the bottom of the list and have the glory potential reduced a little bit to balance against the greater kill potential. The 5v5 format should then be made the default option and the glory reward potential should be increased in order to draw more people in. Additionally all hotjoin games should have a bonus glory reward at the end even for the losing team to discourage leaving early. This end bonus should be rewarded as a percentage of time in the map to discourage the inevitable map hopping.

Glory ranks: Now that there is a better method of ranking player skill, glory ranks should ONLY be considered as reward tiers. In other words, it should be a LOT easier to gain ranks as not everyone plays the game 8 hours a day, and even if they do, not everone wants to ONLY sPvP for the next few years to get armor and weapon skin rewards. In PvE right now it is about a hundred times easier to get all of the armor and weapon skins you’d like, even considering legendaries. I think the highest rank right now is 65 or so. That’s pretty crazy. Especially for those of us who can’t commit even a quarter of the time investment as those top ranked players. To be clear, I’m not suggesting it should be easy. Even if only 10 people were max glory rank right now I’d have hope to one day get there.

Balance: To be honest, there are plenty of frustrating balance issues. I watch streams where skilled players complain about d/d eles and trap rangers. Even no-skill hotjoin games are littered with them and can really make the game not very fun. Here’s the thing though… I actually like that Anet wants to be cautious and not nerf things too quickly. I just wish they’d find a middle ground and perhaps make a few VERY small tweaks once a month so that certain successful builds can remain strong, but not impossible to compete against.

I just wanna point out that the game sold more than 3 mill units. Thinking that you or any of your friends invented any of the meta builds is just funny. I know plenty of people who used BM bunker builds shortly after launch with great success but never bothered to post them or record their play. All builds have already been created. You are not the inventor simply because you bother to stream/post it.

Also, restricting is bad. It removes a lot of teambuild possibilities. Anet wants to give every class more options in the end. Eventually, hammer wars might be as viable as GS wars. The same for the longbow wars. When that’s the case, people can run 2 wars but have different builds you know. Just because the game is not balanced enough yet, doesn’t mean that there should be a restriction. If anything, we can see what needs balancing a lot better right now so it should defy stay this way. Good way to see what needs tweaking, plus it allows more creativity at the same time.

I literally said they aren’t op and my team doesn’t think they are unbeatable in the current meta, so no you didn’t read my post. Btw, I tried to find some pvp videos on your channel but it’s nothing but wvw crap, I didn’t look too hard though since I’m out celebrating the New Year. WvW is garbage. I wouldn’t call my teams strat vs 2 rangers a hard counter but it works when we are on our a-game.

Your entire post was whining about Rangers, So yes..that’s exactly what you said. But i’m glad we all agree now that Rangers aren’t overpowered and don’t need a nerf. So nice that you could come over to my side on the issue.

All my videos are PvP by the way, They’re not terrible SPvP videos because no one really enjoys those videos because they’re bloody boring and god awful in general.

People who are saying they can kill an Ele in a 1v1 or push them off a node or whatever are completely missing the point. It isn’t their 1v1 ability or any other singular thing that makes Eles good, it is their strength in 1v1/sustain/burst/aoe/support/mobility/downed state COMBINED that makes them strong in the current meta. This is pretty much what ANet devs were saying in the last SotG so they understand the problem, so let’s just hope they do not go overboard with the solution.

Here is an example of what I’m talking about. Look at how effective an Ele who zones the beach area in FoN map is. The Ele can both guard the pathway to their close point and threaten the far point, thus forcing a defender to stay there. The ele can do this because he has the 1v1 ability + mobility + sustain to neutralize the point + escape options when rotates come. The only other class that comes close is the thief, but they are less effective in a number of areas (not as strong in support if they keep a bunker at home point, not as effective neutralizing points due to their defense/sustain revolving around teleports/stealth, etc.)

So what is the best counter to this? Why, that is having your own Ele do the exact same thing. If that doesn’t mean there is a problem with Eles then I don’t know what does.

we had 4 ele on the opposing team and it was one of those matches where u left after 2min’s if that . u wanna talk about buff sharing + op healing condi removing lol 3 d/d ele and a bunker staff ele >.> easiest way is to limit how many of each class u can have in a match..

^bunker ele is not the valkyries one..By definition a bunker should be able to hold a point for a fair time against 2 people and valkies eles really cant..not without moving out of node.But i wanna see you run clerics and critting 4.5k firegrabs :P

i dont use valk i use soldier and i dont need the cleric jewel setup cause soldier is more than enough healing burst that u can be a bunker and still dps alot 400heals/tick is more than enough.

Not exactly. They didn’t ignore your build. They actually made fun of you and called you a troll. I used to think posting a good build on the ranger forum was a bad idea, cos everyone would have copied it, but i was wrong. On ranger forum page 1 or 2 you could fine someone who has suggested a build with lb and bear…

As for counters for the Trap builds, i imagine Venom P/D specs would work well against them as well as they do the BM Bunker Specs…, not sure how well that’d do in a group fight. Venom Sharing would be good counter to it I think but problem is Venom Sharing Radius is low, and you basically have to give up the Heal while in stealth which isn’t simply an option in my opinion.

P/d is quite bad in spvp. You can’t use cond dur food in there. Also p/d is strong in wvw mostly cos as a thief you have tons of mobs around you can use c&d on. So if the opponent is good enough to dodge every c&d you don’t have to worry, just target a stupid mosquito and you are safe. Clearly a good game design.
And imo trap specs are not that good, mainly cos you have to waste 30 points in the crit tree. Atm the bm bunker is the best spec (actually the only good one) ranger can use.

Edit: and pls anet nerf fiery great sword and tornado. Other elites just pale in comparison.

Thing is, you can easily C/D the ranger pet right now, which is basically a mob that doesn’t dodge.

But yea, I’m not sure how well the setup would work without condition duration food.

I mean, you’d probably lose some bleed stacks I imagine…

u can C&D off pets/summons/clones so a p/d thief has no issues using C&D cuz chances are someone has a pet/summon or clone up near by

Screaming that Ranger is OP? No that’s far from the issue. And if you want to bring a valid and constructive claim to the debate, then i’d advise that you propose Anet to allow the other weapons for the ranger (Greatsword and offhand axe to name a few) to be legitimately as viable as the other weapons.

Not only that, but better traits and traitlines.

Rangers have imbalances (that are combinations of things available) that can’t be refuted.

2 Dodges within Sword/Dagger both on very short cool downs
An invul (in Marksmen)
20s Stability, Fury, Swiftness on a 120s Cooldown
Quickness

Their Short Bow apart from Sword/Dagger are significantly better than any other weapons, but what Anet needs to do is nerf what is currently too good and buff what isn’t.

Basically it feels like BWE3 all over again with heavy range condi comps.

+1 to you sir. But the main thing I disagree with is cutting down on those abilities. The Ranger as it stands now, does not have as much utility viability as the other professions.

You named two evades on 1 weapon for the ranger. And yet the true evade that the Ranger has as one of their utilities is Lightning Reflexes (which could use a bit of help)

But I very much agree with you in regards to the focus of the slightly weaker things that could use a buff. There shouldn’t be just 2 weapons or few traits that are more superior than the others.

And what I fear is that Anet would focus on nerfing the things that works and not properly handle the things that aren’t working. Then we’re back to square one of figuring out how to fix the class again.

I beg you Anet to take a good look at what can be improved before touching anything that is currently working for the class.

GS ranger is a more than viable build friend of mine had been uing same build from beta and is a tank and can outlast alot of players in wvw

i fell that they are just going to nerf ranger and its goinmg to make a lot of ppl mad. i want them to try one class allowed for even just a month and u wont have to worry about a nerf. because we will be able to see actual data numbers. then we can start brinning stuff up to balance not taking stuff down.

biggest issue i have is the auto atk from the short bow, they increased it when it didnt need to be increased, burning someone down with just 900/1200 range auto atk seems like a fail mechanic . along with no cap on ranger pets

Another failed forum poster that knows less than he thinks. FYI I’ve been running a bunker mesmer build recently. I think you need to learn to play if you think bunker ele is fine atm. They have as much tankiness (if not more) as any other bunker, but have far greater damage output and far greater mobility.

So let me get this straight…where a glass cannon mesmer receive max 1.7k dmg from a bunker ele , you find a bunker mesmer complaining about dmg from a bunker ele?!
Do pls show us this amazing dmg you receive from these bunker eles and how it surpass the dmg from a bunker mes.

As soon as bunker ele’s get their nerf bunker mesmers will take over! Full uptime on retaliation/regen/ 1/2 uptime protection and a personal tank! Then people will stop crying about shatter mesmers and start crying about bunker mesmers! HA. As if that will actually happen I can tell you right now that there are builds in other classes that may not out bunker an ele but the can certainly match it easily and not just my class (mesmers) but rangers and engis too people just haven’t tried to find them!

You have admitted that you don’t even play spvp, why are you here spreading your wisdom?

Actually sir I do. Just not as much as you HARDCORE elitist R45+ people. But I do it enough to know that A) A bunker Mesmer can easily push a bunker ele off a node. It can take a 100B warrior and a guardian and a thief to recap the node and more if I have the chance to get my ranger teammate to help me out from high ground. So yes I am saying there are viable builds that can push ele’s and it all comes down to who bunkers better. In a duel a bunker Mesmer and a bunker ele will literally fight forever (I’ve done it, we had to call the fight at a draw.)

Edit: This experience is from Tournies not hotjoins just in case you wanted to try and pull that card.

so ur basically saying if u had a 3v3 at a node u could hold it with 1 person being able to freely do dmg from on high? wow who would have thought that!! >.>

The funny thing is that the ele bunker build that everyone is complaining about has been up for what 3 months? It was even nerfed because of EA, and it’s been pretty stagnant since then.

and people have been complaining about it since then lol welcome to the forums
