all games have grind!

I agree all games do have a grind.

GW1
– Had an acceptable grind
– Players were able to get max level stats and play everything in the game with their friends rather quickly.
– Armor was about looks not stats.
– We were able to have as many alternate characters as we wanted.

GW2
– Unacceptable grind, I find it more like a Korean MMO rather and a Western AAA title.
– We are now grinding for gear and stats.
– making harder to level alternate characters.

“Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games.”
- Mike Obrien

You were “grinding” for gear and stats before fractals came out. You weren’t given a full exotic set at 80 so you had to either craft it, buy it from the TP, run instances to get it or WvW your way to the highest armor stats.

if you noticed I never said fractals I was talking about the game from August until now.

I guess I feel cheated. The only thing that is the same in this game and GW 1 is the Lore.

So, this is for those you say if you miss it go back.
They pretty much stop development for GW1 5 years ago to start on GW2, and told us it was to improve on certain aspects that were lacking in GW1. Now that GW2 is out they have seemed to have forgotten what they set out to do.

It would have been better if they did not call it GW2 but rather something else and continued development of GW1. They used the success to sell the fan this game and it was entirely disappointing.

There is nothing to go back to i have done everything in GW1 that what happens when you don’t put out new campaigns or expac’s after 5 years .

The Core Elements that are missing

The skills
As stated by others in this thread the Skills are what drive me away from this game.

Compared to the endless combinations that you can make in GW1, this 5 skill system is almost an insult to original fans. There is literally zero skill progression.

I can max out every skill weapon before level 5. then the right side of the skill bar has little customization. Skill 1 has to be a heal skill 2-4 is all you get and skill 5 is a crappy worhtless elite.

Compare that to the multi-class skills in GW1, and the challenge of collecting elite skills from Boss mobs

Guild Hall and Guild vs. Guild
I don’t care what anyone has to say about this.

How the hell can you launch a game called Guild Wars 2 and have it missing those two things.

REALLY I dare you to justify that.

Decent Structured Group Play
Currently this game is design around chaos. Damage + Damage + Support is all this game has to offer. Dungeons once you get the hang of them are super easy and other people are just used for fodder. Any one can pretty much solo any of these dungeons.

They finally changed their poor dungeon design system with the new fractals, which I actually really liked how their design team set up, however the tiers of the fractals in theory may have looked good on paper. However, so does communism. They are gating the community now with this tier system.

Then there’s the infusion and ascended gear That is against their entire design philosophy dated back to 2005 when they launched GW1, which is another reason I missed GW1.

“Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games.”
- Mike Obrien

Lord of the Rings Online had something similar a few years back it was called radiance, it turned out so bad that its no longer in the game.

The Idea of GW1 was to be able to jump in and play with your friends and Guildies add a gating feature and now that’s gone.

@Walle

You say “I stayed this long..” as if you’ve been here for years. The game is 3 months old. o_0

When GW1 launched there were a ton of problems with the game play mechanics, almost 3 months later they changed and made it better.

I expected more from a studio that had experience and a good design for a game, but they decided to throw all that out the window.

Nope I am pretty much done. I stayed this long hoping for the best but now I am just done. As a GW1 player its now clear that they do not have us in mind.

For those you like this game I really hope you enjoy it with all its future content. I will jump on the forums time to time to see if they fixed anything. I will either go play swtor or just go back to GW1 I wish they could still make content for gw1.

As far as i am concerned though anet will not get another dime from me on GW2 unless the change it for the better.

It does not matter if they added 1 tier or 100 tiers of new armor. The fact is they added it. It goes against everything they advertised.

I played gw1 until the launch of this game and loved the fact that armor meant nothing it was for looks, and the skill of the player did not rely on the stats of his/her armor.

This was a complete slap in the face to the fans. We were lied too and quite frankly that disgusts me and there not getting any more money from me, and I know I am not the only one.

Oh KITTEN! Is this by any chance the Walle of WoW: Ner’Zhul fame?

Never played WoW.

I played GW1 from launch until the release of GW2.

You don’t NEED other people to play though. Just yesterday, I hopped on GW1 and vanquished 3 or 4 zones with just heroes.

I happen to enjoy playing with other people. If i want to play a solo game I will go play a RPG.

GW1 seemed to do everything better than GW2.

I just don’t understand why they would want to alienate they’re core fan base by removing design/mechanic concepts that made GW1 great.

GW2 seems have turned its back on it’s fans.

I really hope now that GW2 is out they create two teams, and finally make a 4th campaign or second expansion to GW1

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

Chris Whiteside – Studio Design Director

Thank you for posting further information.

I won’t say I like it. To me, the whole idea of adding another tier reeks of a slow addition of the gear treadmill. I appreciate some people are have gotten legendaries and feel there’s a void at end game. I don’t think adding more gear will please them without alienating the core fanbase that loved gw1 for content progression rather than gear grind. My personal feeling is if you cater to the guys that are complaining about having no reason to play the game because there’s no progression you’re playing an endless fool’s game. Once they get the next tier they’ll just demand another. I don’t feel like these are the people that will stick to the game when another one with newer shinier stuff comes out. As soon as you stop spoon feeding them carrots to get them to play, they’ll leave.

Beyond that, this feels like a betrayal of the principle that skill and not stats or willingness to grind should be what wins, and that adding gear grind doesn’t add fun. Infusion was an amusing side note in GW1. Something that was hellishly easy for anybody to get, but basically not a big deal. I think people who bring up LOTRO and WoW history in this argument have a point. Gating content just adds grind before new players can enjoy content with their friends.

All that said… I’ll give this a chance.

GW1 was my first MMO. I was used to hitting max level quickly and knowing I could do whatever content was out there pretty much immediately. It was great to know leveling another character was relatively quick and again, I could pretty much do what I wanted when I hit the top. Trying out WAR, and playing WoW, was a hideous shock. The idea that max level just meant I got to grind the same content, over and over, for hundreds of hours praying for the drop I needed to complete my set before I could play the real end game sucked. Realizing I also had to grind my butt off in PvP the same way, and add another hundred hours to do the hard mode end game content was just one more kick in the teeth. And three months later, new content comes out, and all that work is just flushed down the toilet because a new tier has been released, and your old gear is pointless.

That’s why I look at the idea of adding a new tier with such disdain. I played GW1 because it was fun. I ground for the skins I wanted, not because I needed a specific piece to be able to play the next set of content, and not because I needed a stat boost to justify the time I put into the game. Seeing my character progress through titles and get cool looking armor was enough.

The idea of releasing ascended gear very slowly, as pieces rather than a set, is not perfect, but it’s a significantly less drastic gear progression. And so long as there are many varied ways to acquire most of the gear, worst case is you maybe have to only hold your nose and do something you don’t enjoy a little bit to keep up. It’s a compromise that I can see my self living with, even if it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

At the end of the day, I enjoy the game too much to let this decision drive me from playing, even if I feel it’s a bad direction to take the game.

I hope, a year from now or whenever the ascended set is complete, that Anet announces that their will be no further gear progression. I don’t know if that’s the case, and I don’t know what I’ll do if it’s not, but for the moment I’m willing to stick with the game, enjoy my time, and see how it all plays out.

I have to agree completely.

I sat by am hoped for some better changes these past few months and this was a change for the worst. GW1 was amazing, the idea of playing a game for the fun of playing the game was a fantastic concept.

I enjoying playing a game I do not enjoy grinding to have the ability to play the game. Sadly this update is going to make me quit.

I find it rather funny. Proves a point that players are just simply dumb. Each class has the ability to offer combos to other classes to increase the efficiency of one another.

It’s just funny that their is already elitism forming, in a game that does not need it. The dungeons are not even that hard. Especially the bosses.

All players need to do is watch the animations and dodge at the right time.

GW1 vs. GW2 : Costume Brawl

The costume brawl was so much better in GW1 its not even funny. This game keeps on getting more and more disappointing. I stay only becasue there were huge changes after GW1 launched and I am hoping for the same here.

I determined that Guild Wars 1 was design for intelligent people who enjoy a decent game.

Guild Wars 2 was designed to the mass and sadly most people lack intelligence.

The point and click movement game with no jumping? No thank you. I uninstalled it the day I downloaded it for a free trial, and I stayed with SWTOR for months, which is saying a lot. Little things like movement mechanics mean a lot, and DCUO is only playable with a controller for example.

You could use WASD you did not need to point and click. The only thing I use jumping for is jump puzzles and when I am bored. It has no real use in combat.

I think they should now go back to making expansions for GW1.

After GW:EN they pretty much stopped development all together for GW1 and left a small updates team on it. I and many others have waited 5 years for this game and they turned a amazing skill based game into Auto Attack Wars 2…

No Decent Rewards

walle.6437

This more of an opinion.

I find it rather upsetting that the only way to get the pretty shinnies if through crafting. How is that fun?

Personally I hate crafting I like to explore and play the dungeons, etc. I personally find crafting in any game boring and more work than fun and when I have to use the word work in an aspect of a game I tend not to do it since I play to escape work.

The only way to get the legendary awesome looking weapons is through crafting. Meanwhile the Dungeons have Zero decent rewards. I mean Why bother running them after you got your armor.

In Guild Wars 1 you ran dungeons for the chance of getting an awesome looking weapon.

I am not saying remove the crafting option for the legendary’s some people like crafting. All I am saying is add more legendary’s that can only be obtained through dungeons.

Favourite – Human

They’ve gone through a lot and are still standing, showing a remarkable resilience and will to survive.

This aspect will be interesting when we revisit Cantha were the human society is thriving. It will be fascinating to see how the people unified under an imperial banner has changed over 250 years.

In Tyria the Charr have become the dominate race, and their technology has advanced because of it. So, imagine the Human advancements made over in Cantha after they ended the plague.

Is GW2 as successful as you hoped?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

GW2 was designed as a casual pick up and play game. I can go off and play swtor, secret world, or borderlands 2, etc for a while. Now here is the best part I can come back anytime and continue were I left off. Its how GW1 was and GW2 is no different.

Has GW2 lost players? Absolutely, its what happens with new mmos everyone buys it checks it out, and it just not might be the game for them, or they don’t want to commit to a sub.

We all have our opinions. However people need to realize the player base no matter if its in a decline or increase will always be at its highest during the first couple week after its launch. People take off from work, skip school, cough cough I’m not feeling to good. Then after the initial rush the player base will stabilize. Players will start to log in during peak hours and some might not log in until the weekend, and even then only might play 3-4 hours.

It would be awesome to see the new reformed Cantha. Since the imperial army ended the little civil war between the Luxons and Kurzicks.

Also to see card board city will these new graphics would be amazing.

Lets not forgot about Palawa Joko. It’s been 250 years since we released the Lord of the Undead to help stop Abaddon. He now currently rules over all of Elona, built a dam on the river flooding the crystal desert. Seems there is enough content and story there alone for an xpac to retake Elona

Not to mention there is a door to the cystal desert down in Ebon Hawk.

1) I really miss the concept of going into a dungeon and clearing it, and being rewarded a chest at the end with the chance of getting rare weapon skins. It seems the only way to get rare or “exotic” skins is through crafting.

(My Thoughts/Opinion)
Personally I despise crafting. I don’t play a game to work, if any aspect of a game seems like a job I just don’t do it. So, it’s a little upsetting when the only way to obtain things is through crafting or buying peoples crafted items. Where is the fun in that? Wheres the challenge?

2) I miss certain Dungeons. Example, Fissure of Woe and Underworld. It would be nice to revisit them to see how they have changed over 250 years.

(My Thoughts/Opinion)
On that topic it would be interesting if they would increase the party size on those dungeons to if they were added. I guess to other mmo players make them like “raids.”

I know to me the current dungeon system is kind of Ironic. We went from 8 man groups down to 5. I find this funny because 2 spots in a group were normally for the healers. So instead of letting us utilize the free up space for the healers they just removed the spot all together.

I think increasing the group size of the dungeons might help people who are upset about the difficulty.

3) I miss the Missions in Guild Wars one. For those who did not play they were similar to the story quests except you were able to repeat them, and later play them on a higher difficulty to obtain a title.

It would be nice to go back and play some of the story quest again.

Please let me know if you agree, and what do you really miss? Maybe Arenanet will listen and implement some of these things back that we miss /fingers crossed

There is nothing unique or special about this game. All the “dynamic events” and hearts are just specialized kill and gather quests.
