…and it wasn’t because there was more mini-games.
At launch the game was about dynamic events, leveling, crafting and gear progression. I had more fun back then. I really miss that time. I loved the feeling that there is a reason to fight that monster and help those peasants. Now I feel that the game is about farming achievements and getting 8th back piece that I really don’t need and don’t care about… I never cared much about achievements. That didn’t change. But AN puts most of their effort on mini games and achievement system instead of that what was really fun for me – dynamic events, fighting giants and dragons with crowd of people!
After launch I was playing a LOT. Now I rarely log in. Just to check out new area or dungeon. After an hour I’m done and bored. I spend more time on the forums now.
Are you level80?
If so that’s the problem. Leveling your toon you felt epic because you were all over the place following your personal story and creating your own story. At 80 that stops and you don’t progress anymore with your character. The story progresses around you and that doesn’t feel epic, at least not to me. So I can feel for ya.
Glad for WvW!
First of all it wasn’t meant as a complaint just a mere observation (i have been playing this game for a long time just playing melee which is fine). I was just wondering why the casters in this game aren’t really casting anything and why this is different than your typical mmo. But seeing some of your reactions i guess i wasn’t allowed to express my feeling about the GW2 caster classes :/
Nah, you’re fine. Your first post sounded like a complaint not just an observation.
Personally I love GW2 combat. It’ll be hard playing the standard turn based, tab targeting again.
For me the problems with GW2 stem from the fact the story is not about ME. It doesn’t matter what I do.
Tyria is a beautiful world to run around and effect, except I don’t effect a thing. I don’t really matter. If I don’t participate, so what, someone else will. Add to that the lact of any progression whatsoever and you have a lack of EPIC FEEL.
GW2 and SWToR have Epic stories, but we aren’t epic in them. LotRO works because we are paralleling the Epic Heroes and effecting things that they don’t. Story is important, but not at my expense. I need to feel epic, I need to effect change. I don’t need to be another piece being carried by the developers story. For me this is why PvE doesn’t work. Glad there’s WvW!
This is purely at level 80. Obviously my personal story is spoon fed, but the leveling and exploring is all about me. Once I hit the cap I do not progress at all, and that’s a problem.

I still think this guide is far to biased and contains some questionable suggestions.
It contains some good bits but a lot is personal opinion and preference and some of it even confusing or detrimental.
A combat 101 guide should really focus on the mechanics and explain how things work rather than give opinions and suggestions as to what you personally feel is the case.
I hope you continue to not like it and continue to state as much in this thread, as each time you do it’s a bump for a new player.
This guide is not meant to be an end all be all comprhensive guide to every profession, trait, and combat. What i like about this guide is that it helped me, a long time veteran of MMOs, look at combat and traiting your character in the way this game meant it. This game is very different than the standard trinity based, turn based combat MMO. When you are conditioned to having one role and playing it and you come to GW2 and find out that you are gimping your self if you do that, it can be frustrating. All Dreammy does is explain how to look at combat and how to not kitten yourself. It helped immensely. I can honestly say that I wouldn’t still be playing if I hadn’t found this. I couldn’t get away from the traditional MMO style of play. Now I’m having fun and figuring it all out.
Good stuff all around.
I enjoy GW2 for what it has to offer. It is fun and done well.
I just chuckle at some of the lists and some of those who made them acting as if this is the first time they’ve ever existed. It’s not.
I love WvW but it’s also funny how so many people kittened about Alterac Valley (original) but love WvW!
Anywho, the two things that I need to have in all my games from now on is action combat and limited ability use. Best features of GW2 as far as I’m concerned.
I think Anet just needs to due a reset. Start the tiering over again. But this time take the data of WvW population and pair up the servers. We wouldn’t need to see TC v ET v FC, we already know how that would end.
Take the data on when people are on and re-seed the tiers. Play for a month and then finalize the results, seed and go from there. But do it based on your WvW queue data. The math you have is all messed up now. You should have done this right after you stopped free transfers. Please do this after you fix culling and add the WvW update.
Good stuff in this guide, too. Appreciate the comments from the vets who have read this as well.
Good stuff. Again as a noob, I greatly appreciate it and the effort. +1 again!
Gawrsh, I don’t know Mickey!
It took me 5 minutes to stop laughing! Thank you! Upvoted, too!
Umm…Tab target? Problem solved.
Although, I admit there is an advantage in feel. I like the Norn and Charr, but they feel slow when you move and dodge. So much so that I can’t really play one. Sadly that means Stitch, Weeds and dirty Humans for me.
10 people is a very good size for a Tier 1 bounty mission.
Didn’t really think that one through eh? how are 10 people supposed to gain the influence needed for this? hm?
Actually it’s simple really and I’m surprised this isn’t clear to folks.
They made a game for players to enjoy and to make money. 10 man or smaller guild will do one of 3 things
1. Nothing or quit. (not many will do this but I’m sure they will lose some.)
2. put in the effort for the influence, thus staying in game longer creating a better chance of you opening your wallets in the shop.
3. Opening your wallets to buy gems to convert to gold to convert to influence which gains you access.
Simple business if you ask me.
Thanks you three!
After reading Dreamy’s guide and realizing I’ve been looking at this game like it was your standard MMO, which was wrong. And now reading what Arc has written places me in a much better starting point than where I was.
@Dolan thanks for the advice on trying the classes in the mists. I did try that and I think at first it confused me more having not leveled with those skills it never “felt” right. I think I’ll go back again and see if it “feels” right. And you may be right about the Gurdian. I was purposefully ignoring them for now, trying something else
Lot of good info to digest, thanks y’all.
Great guide, I really needed to understand how different this is from other mmos. I know you here about it, but I was under the concept of same roles with different names. Good Job and Thanks!
This, a 100 times!
I bought this at release and just couldn’t shake that I didn’t need to choose a role of Control, Damage or Support, so I never really got started. This guide explained that a profession choice is more based on the play style you want to use to perform all three areas of combat! Awesome stuff! It’s like the light bulb finally turned on.
Looking forward to Truefaiths video on combos as well. Thanks you two and thanks for the comments from some vets to, essentially, give the guide a stamp of approval.
Man I feel dumb for not making the connection sooner
Sticky this please Anet!
I highly recommend all New players to read this (Guide) to learn how the
Combat mechanics function and how the Traits/Armor/Weapons system work.https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
Also take a look at this short video to get an idea of how all 8 classes play in Combat:
This should asnwer all your questions! =) Have fun! Oh and also please Comment on my guide and leave me feedback on your thoughts.
Thanks Dreamy! I had created a topic on info for profs probably while you were posting this. this is exactly what i was looking for!
I used the search function to look at some info and I saw a few comparison posts on some professions. What I am interested in is information (or a site that provides it) on how the professions generally play.
Since there is no specific Tank or Healer class I am a little lost on what to play. I usually role one or both of those. I do have a basic understanding that all the professions are supposed to be able to do damage, some support, some defense and some crowd control. But, I also imagine each profession has it’s stronger points.
I have played 5 of them (thief, ele, mesm, engi and necro) to only the teens to try and at least get a feel for combat and how their skills and traits fit with the style. What I’ve come up with so far is I’m a kiting fool with all of them and it seems like I can set them up for good damage builds (not sure on conditions yet).
Looking for the info so I can determine a primary profession to play. I’ll keep piddlin’ around with what I’ve got, but right now I’m not sure on any of them for my primary.
Thanks in advance.
