I’m not usually the kind of guy that complains about stuff. I have been enjoying Guild Wars 2 since launch and even when people started complaining about different things (RNG boxes), I told them to back off and just pay for it so we can get new content in the game.

However, I’ve had enough of this now. I spent around 50 gold, buying over 500 Dragon Coffers, and when I opened them I didn’t get a single claim ticket. Normally I would be fine with this, but after opening 100 black lion chests and not getting a fused weapon and opening 50 southsun supply crates and not getting a scelerite weapon, I feel like this whole “skins in RNG boxes” thing is just getting out of hand.

Anet, I love your game, and I will probably play it for the next five years, but on behalf of almost every Guild Wars 2 player, I’m begging you to just let us buy the skins in the gem store. It may not be the best way for you to make quick money, as it would be a guaranteed chance to get the skins, but it will keep your players happy. And in the long run, keeping players happy is what is going to get you the most money, becuase the community will stay strong and people won’t give up on the game

I’m not anywhere near giving up on the game myself, but please stop this RNG madness.

Some of you use words like novelty and special to describe these skins.

If you get a skin through RNG. It’s luck or money that got you that skin. You did not earn it! And no one thinks you are a better players for having it!

If you want a special novelty item there’s legendaries. Gem store skins should never be rarer than a legendary!

Think I am going to sign off, maybe log in for daily and thats it. This update, while all the fun little goodies it might have, makes me not want to play. RNG galore..sickening.

Sorry, but that’s exactly the reason why they continue this RNG madness.

They might be just pixels, but each of those skins has a tangible cost associated to it. An artist spent paid company time creating them that didn’t use on other projects, the executives spent paid time reviewing and aproving/requesting changes, testers spent paid time trying them and so on. If people just stopped buying the RNG boxes so they wouldn’t make that cost back, they’d just stop using them in the first place.

For example, they’ve sold skins directly in the past, I remember braham’s mace and shield and rox’s quiver and bow getting excellent reviews and praises about their design… but I’m yet to see anyone wearing one in game, and I know two people in my guild that bought them (at 600 gems each)… yet just logging today for a few mins at noon there were at least 3 people talking about how they had bought at least 25 crates each (2000 gems each) less than a couple hours since they went live, and if you check the forums it’s full of people buying tons of them, and sorry to say, but you’re a perfect example… you got burned with 100 BL chests, 50 southsun chests, and you go ahead and buy 500 crates on the first day of the new event… that’s why they keep doing them.

Heck, from their point of view, if I had a store, and selling items directly sold good enough, but selling them in random mystery boxes resulted in some people protesting outside my store but the lines to buy them to go around the corner and they sell faster than I can stock them… well… I wouldn’t think much about what to do either.

Can you please make one of those threads to just toss all of the complaint threads into? I doubt we really need over a dozen of them as each complaint doesn’t deserve its own thread. This will help clean up the clutter.

The sad thing is that doing this in the name of greed doesn’t really tell the whole story. It’s likely that if they sold the skins directly for 800 to 1600 gems, they would make more money than they get fleecing the “suckers” who buy the RNG chests. (I hope that the Wintersday Gem Store Skins aren’t used as evidence to the contrary. The Gem Store skins for that event had very, very low appeal).

So, it’s not just “greed”, it seems to be glee over the ability to get “suckers” to spend money on a lotto chest.

Not only do these boxes probably result in less revenue than direct skin sales, (possibly by a massive margin), but they also generate high levels of bad will towards the company.

Marketing research recently showed that the most costly mistake a company can make is to do anything that strikes their customers as “unfair”. Customers who come to believe they have been treated unfairly by a company are the most difficult and the most costly customers to regain and the negativity tends to last much longer than any other negative experience a customer might experience.

So I guess the real lesson from this thread is don’t be tricked into buying the boxes on the gem store.

Seriously though, this is terrible business practice. Yes they might make some money on gem sales in the short term but it isn’t worth it if they really do see GW2 as a long term project.

I’d have to agree with everyone else in that really, there shouldn’t be any surprise whatsoever that any RNG box tossed out by ANet is just there to leech your money and offer you absolutely nothing in compensation whatsoever.

Stop tossing money at those lazy moneygrubbers who spent all of an hour to make some chintzy weapon skins and go to a casino. Seriously, you not only get better odds at a roulette table, you’d get better rewards too.

I quit after Halloween because of this rng bullkitten. Now after hearing it was supposed to be better and spending time watching their streams, I came back to this game in hopes of things being fixed. NOPE. DO NOT BUY coffers. YOU will just get screwed. 40 bucks straight down the drain. I have opened 35 rare coffers, and 150 reg coffers. not one ticket. Just candy and mediocre BS the event doesn’t even need. GG A-net. Way to make me kitten ed off enough to leave your game again.

Actually no it is not. ANET them selves said during the streams they increased rng in buying coffers so that you can get tickets. YET it was most likely a troll. Cause tickets are no where to be found. If someone spends money, you should be guaranteed at least 1 bloody ticket.

The only solution from our end is to stop buying them. If the boxes don’t sell they’ll stop making them.

Until then they will keep coming, especially if idiots keep spending hundreds of dollars a time because they “have to” have the latest skin and then “have to” do it again a few weeks later.

If event weapon skins were sold in BL directly, probably those weapon skins aren’t that much “prestige” skins.

Just look at Flame & Frost weapon skins. I’ve actually seen pretty much none running with those skins, while I saw many people with fused weapons.

The fact is simple. The more rare something is, the more value it has.

It is supposed to be as rare for people who spends real money on it as for people who don’t. You just need to be lucky to get those weapon skins, regardless on how much money you have in your wallet.

And these people will just sit there and churp “RNG RNG” while they click on the ui to buy more of these boxes. It’s not random that’s the problem unless you consider a 1 or a 0 random because even the loot is like that in this game, but don’t be fooled it’s nowhere near 50/50%.

I wouldn’t mind the RNG boxes if there was a way of getting even a single guaranteed ticket preferably through gameplay. For example one skin for the account any extra skins either for same toon or alts have to be gambled for.

But alas I dont think this will happen as people keep gambling for something with unknown odds.

There really should be some sort of regulations to prevent this kind of disgusting money milking. Selling “nothing” for ridiculous prices is a way too common in online games nowdays.

All of you idiots dropping money and then coming on here to complain, you are the problem not Anet. As long as you guys remain unintelligent and buy this stuff, they will keep doing it.

Apparently there are regulations but they allow things like this because you are guaranteed to get something for your money and you know what the possible prizes are in advance.

Some people have claimed they legally have to tell you the odds too, but either that’s not the case, there’s some geographical loophole (like the servers are in Washington State and Germany so only their laws apply) or no one has actually reported them for it yet.

wow I feel bad for you I got alot more Risen Knights just from killing the newbie zone holo enemies and that was just a little over 100 coffers from 1 run.

Which is why the only way to show a.net that it is unacceptable is for the whole playerbase to ignore those kitten RNG boxes, if they start seeing that they do not sell at all they will implement the buy the ticket or better yet buy the skin directly.

I don’t get why they are doing this crap, look at LOL it is one of the most successful games out there right now, and how do they sell skins ? directly of course no RNG BS at all !!!

tbh I’m starting to get sick of this crap, I love GW2 and all but this game’s progression is all about cosmetics, yet every single great looking skin they have released lately is always locked behind the kitteng RNG

One of the main reasons I hate games like wow and the like is the kitten RNG !
but lately the RNG in GW2 is worse than it ever was when I played pure RNG based games like swtor, lotro etc.

I am glad I came to this game with the full understanding that I am still getting an NCSoft game and that there WOULD be a grind regardless of what they were saying. Which is why I think I am still playing…no real surprises, coming from Aion.

2. Do these boxes really matter? You don’t HAVE to buy them, they are only skins. I don’t buy them, but the people who do buy them give me free content updates.

Yeah acquiring skins DOES matter, If i cant get or at least work reasonable realistically to get something like a skin… why would I want to play, why should I play at all?.. after all what else is there to do in this game?.. its the only ‘Fun’ thing to do thats left (and so far none of them have been ‘fun’ since Christmas (I at elast came away from that with a few skins i still have after having a fun time) thanks to the ultra random chance factor)

Why cant I farm gold for gems or use some $ to buy some for a skin (Like the Bhrams skins, which arent as over represented as some people have made out, hell I think im one of 3 people on my server who use them so no, letting people buy the skins doesnt make them any less special)… why do we have to farm npcs ad nausium in order to possibly find a rare ticket or drop random amounts of cash for the same ends to simply enjoy the game (and hey there isnt really anything to enjoy in this game any more honestly except acquiring these skins as ive said)

I hoped they’d do something different this time (at least let us buy the kitten tickets with gems), but no I mean who here has actually seen a player with a Sclerite weapon?… for me, the entire time since Southsun started… ive seen just 1, just 1 and thats in dozens of overflows and my own server… this will be no different (And i bought supply crates, learned my lesson fast on that one).

I only really play this game for WvW, and thats getting staler (again)… only thing that brings me back is the hope of being able to get something nice for my characters or two with the odd event… so far none of them have been ‘Fun’ nor fruitful in that endeavor.

So really, little remains for me to even contemplate dropping cash in Anet or NCsoft (does who matter really?) lap for this game… and im sure theres a hell of alot of others just like me and growing in numbers every time we get another “throw cakitten us until we think maybe we’ll give you what you want” event. I dont function with the ‘at any cost’ to acquire mindset that Anet/NCsoft is preying on, so for me the only way Anet/NCsoft will get my money is by letting me get this stuff when I desire it (even if i have to work a little for it)… no other way, so till then, No $$$ for you from these pockets.

Its bad enough there so often one time events also… Im through being a shmuck.

Edit:- I want the Staff, Shield and Sword, If they sold the tickets for 800 gems each that would be 30$ instantly in their bank account from me, since i cant be bothered spending days farming gold for the gems, especially given the current gem/gold conversion rate. 25 Rich Chests opened and I recieved all junk and 1 Mini. I’m not going to cry too much because I just converted what gold I had to purchase them and no real money but it still is kind of ridiculous. Rates like this is why I won’t/haven’t spent what real money I do have on this game. If the drop rate was descent I would totally spend a good $20 for some skins but nope, never.

I am happy ANet keeps going on and on ripping people off with these RNG boxes, its more money I get to save.

I am all for supporting Anet to make GW2 better and when there is an item of actual value in the gem store like the Bow and Quiver from flame and frost, the mining pick and sickle (though a touch over priced IMO), bank and character slots I am all for it and I spend some cash. What I won’t waste my money on is a lottery box, If I am going to give Anet cash that I worked hard for I expect something of value, not 10 karka shells and flowers that I can farm myself in 10 minutes, not a few pieces of candy that is good for a whopping 30min, I want something I can see and maybe swing around for years to come.

Each event is becoming more and more of a let down, they start off as new and interesting and quickly become a letdown minutes later because all the good stuff is locked behind an extremely expensive Rng door, no thank you, I am not falling for it!

So keep it up Anet, all the money I am saving by not falling for your rng trap is just gonna go towards other games, a lot of interesting titles coming! And who knows you keeps this thing going long enough I will have more than enough for my Ps4 and a few games! So again TY!

35 opened and no ticket…same goes for opening a alot of BLC and no Fire weapon or Halloween weapon or any weapon type for that matter….idk if its my luck but when you see anet devs walking around with these new weapons its like a smack in the face…..RNG is garbage and its ruining this game……………free minis dont make up for your rng nonsense……how bout a free ticket!!!!!!!!!! that would only make sense…..not like any devs will read this comment…….RNG will be the end of this game

These have got to be some of the most unscrupulous development practices in the MMO industry.

The droprates are incredibly, stupidly small, and they don’t even reveal the scale of small to people in hopes of creating Mystic Forge-like goldsinks and cash shop shakedowns.

This should be an example to people all around of how much “better” free to play models are compared to sub models.

And the most important thing, that you’ll ever learn.

The most important thing as far as cosmetic things is concerned:

They should have been unlocks, like hats and costumes in GW1.
Cuz is you get them but you lose it’ll be all for naught.
