So, I’ll preface by saying I don’t PvE. I’ve put thousands of hours in this game, I have 4 or 5 level 80s but it was 95% pvp, 2% WvW, 1% Pve.

I watched the GameSpot trailer for “PoNR” and got a vibe from it that may be way off base, and maybe you can straiten me out:

Does this elude to the fact that the game is making way for the leaked expansion (unconfirmed?) and that this indicates a possible faction system (ala WoW or…well…most other MMOs)?

Now, I appreciate bringing this topic up to those that would read it because if you’re currently playing the game, thus, reading the forums, then you really enjoy this “collect shinies” system that GW2 is. I personally never played this PvE because it has no appeal, because of its design choice.

If the game added factions and open world PvP I would be all over it and I would venture out of HotM. I know most of my friends would at least try it out as well.

So, am I reading too much into it or has the game decided to do something drastically different in an effort to bring in my type of player?

Factions bring heavy imbalance in numbers.
Example:

  • Aion
  • The Secret World
Did I ever tell you, the definition, of Insanity?

3. OPEN WORLD PvP / FACTIONS

[~] Threads for reference:

[+] Arguments in favour:

  • That other game has it; we’ve seen it done there and enjoyed it.
  • We want competition. We can’t live without competition in games, a game without competition is boring and is not worth staying in.
  • We invested time/money in our gear, so we want our gear to matter. We do not like equalized stats in sPvP and we do not like zergs in WvW.
  • Separate PvP servers with PvE maps can be added to give PvP/PvE-focused people a choice.
  • Factions add a lot to both lore and gameplay.

[-] Arguments against:

  • GW2 is not that other game. GW2 is a cooperative game, not a competitive game: you don’t compete over loot, nodes and such. For competition, we have two options: sPvP and WvW. If current PvP/WvW game modes are not enough, you can always suggest new ones, but in the boundaries of competitive areas.
  • Open world PvP is detrimental. Different kinds of players exist: those who prefer fair and healthy competition, and those who prefer fierce and unhealthy competition. The first are usually peaceful non-hardcore teenagers and casual grown-up players (which turn out to be the target audience for which GW2 was actually designed in the first place, with all the timidness of content, failproofness and cooperativeness in mind), and the latter are usually aggressive teenagers who are using online games as a sublimation for unsatisfied offline desires of being “better” than others, while not being constrained by offline moral and law limits. This usually leads to offensive behaviour, which can already be seen in both PvP and WvW (with as far as death threat whispers); such things are not tolerated in GW2. Open world PvP attracts the second type of players, and since many mature players already live a moderately risky life, they see their games as a comfort zone to rest in, and not a war zone similar to life, and want GW2 to stay as is.
  • In GW2, not gear, but skill is what matters – even if it is the skill of finding the best team composition or the skill of using Skyhammer’s features in the cheesiest possible way. You cannot really buy ultimate superiority for money in this game. The most you can do is buy gems, convert to gold, get full ascended with infusions, eat the most expensive food, buy all gemstore buffs and go roaming in WvW, hoping that the slight boost in stats will outweigh the skill of your opponent.
  • Even on a separate server, you cannot simply turn a PvE map into a PvP map: it was not designed with it in mind. Furthermore, it will thin down and fracture the community, which contradicts with the Megaservers idea.
  • Factions are too hard to implement at this point of the game’s life when the basics have already been put in place. Factions are too hard to add with the current lore in mind.

[=] Current state of affairs:

  • A lot of people feel that GW2 is a casual friendly cooperative game which was not designed to have open world PvP, and they want it to remain that way. For competition, sPvP and WvW modes were included in the game. New PvP/WvW game modes, including GvG, with separate large maps, are discussed as valid options.

I seriously doubt this would happen. The outcry would be tremendous. GW2 would have had to be built with this in mind from the start, to do something like this.

As much as i would like openworld pvp and a factional war within GW2, it’s not going to happen. A lot of those points might be good, but it would fundamentally change what GW2 is about, and that wouldn’t sit well with the majority of players.

Not Open World PvP but I would say that dueling is a possible addition. 1v1 dueling could be possible in the next patch if it is implemented in a polished and friendly way.

Reading far too much into it.

If factions do return to Guild Wars expect the systems to be the same as Factions (the expansion). If any sort of PvP were to be added expect it to be in the similar to WvW or GvG’s (guild wars) not Open World PvP.

PvP is unbalanced. If you do not believe it, look at the last tournament where 2eles+2engis+1thief won.

Introducing factions will destroy the game, because each open 1v1 (or 2v2) will be an unfair battle where players will start raging on forums (giving headaches to staff), or players will change factions (making PvP even more unbalanced, this time in form of numbers).

This, in my humble customer opinion, is a very bad idea. GW2 should try and continue the safe road of organized team PvP.

You are reading too much into it. Open world PvP is a feature that significantly alters the feel of the whole game, and caters to a different demographics than the one currently playing GW2. Yes, it might cause some pvp players to start playing pve (but then, they are already playing the game, so it’s not really that much of a gain). On the other hand it would definitely cause lot of PvE players to stop playing at all. I don’t see Anet ever doing it, as it would be a suicide move.

Also, there’s nothing in that trailer that would suggest factions (The sylvari on the Mordremoth’ side are an equivalent to risen Charr, Humans, Asura and Norn on Zhaitan’s side – enemies to be defeated, definitely not a basis for a healthy faction system).

Actions, not words.

Does this elude to the fact that the game is making way for the leaked expansion (unconfirmed?) and that this indicates a possible faction system (ala WoW or…well…most other MMOs)?

Only if ANet really wants to get rid off most of their players.

Heck i would even prefer something like Lineage 2 over the mindless ganking that
all these factions systems are.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Isn’t open world PvP already covered by WvW? Sure it could use more maps and variety but that’s where people do open world PvP.

Splitting an existing player base into sub-factions is a terrible idea. Imagine the effect that would have on guilds alone.
