Have you ever deleted an 80?
I don’t see the problem. If you own anything valuable it’s bound to account.
I’ve deleted a few that I levelled up quickly with birthday scrolls and tomes, for reasons of experimentation. Never one that I spent any real time on.
Just do it. This game throws experience at you in many ways anyway. Free exp everywhere and experience writs and experience tomes. I would worry about the age for your character (birthday gifts), map completion and crafting on that character and consider whether it’s worth deleting that time and gold investment.
I’ve deleted a few but only because I have used them to farm one-time rewards.
I deleted a lev 80 rev. I find the class utterly a waste of space. I am going to delete this human necro too, cant stand the comments and the bad voicing. To be fair, I have so many stacks of tombs of knowledge, I can delete and replace with out any problems. I am also not the type to get attached to a toon.
Just make sure, break down/vendor trash anything soul bound. Don’t forget to move things like mining tools, bags and ascended gear to bank for later use. If you have exotic armor use BL kits and you might salvage runes if they are worth money.
Biggest downside to deleting a character is you lose all progress character age wise.
That new character will be 1 day old meaning if your old character was 6, 12, 18 or more months old you lose on birthday gifts.
As with Guild Wars 1, there is usually no good reason to delete a character older than 6 months, unless you absolutely do not care about birthday gifts. The only reason to actually delete a character is if you can’t afford a new character slot or you absolutely want the name (though name change exists).

Yeah this is what I am thinking of doing. I know its drastic, because I will lose my only two level 80’s:
Human 80 Guardian
Human 80 Engineer
Norn 33 Warrior
to:
Norn 20 Guardian
Human 20 Warrior
Charr 20 Engineer
I just love the idea of a huge Norn Guardian and a Charr Engineer for some reason.
I’ve deleted a few for mostly cosmetic reasons. Mostly warriors (deleted 4 so far). Never really got a feel for that class somehow.
I’ve not done anything like that. I tend to plan my permanent characters long before I make them so I’m confident I’ll like the race/gender/profession combo and how they look.
But I have deleted at least 1 level 80 character. Back when the NPE messed up the personal story I made a new character to play through the whole story so I could document the numerous plot holes that appeared as a result (like having conversations about a characters death, then meeting them later on). I kept her as a mule for a while then deleted her.
I think it’s simpler when I know the character won’t last forever because I make sure I don’t get too invested in them, especially in the sense of buying skins, equipment, dyes etc. specifically for them. I’ve also had a lot of practice deleting characters so I can be confident I won’t accidentally delete anything I wanted to keep.

I was going to be but then I just decided to get another character slot instead.
I’ve deleted a charr engineer, and thought about making a human engineer lol.

Why? just buy a new character slot.
I have a few human character i dont like. I leave them at mining locations.
I deleted my norn female thief and my norn female ranger for reasons. I didn’t remember until a week after deleting the thief that she was my 500 huntsman and leatherworker, though. So, don’t do that.
How many character slots can you have? I have 9. How much are they each?

70 character slots. A character slots cost 800 gems which will be like 160 gold. I´ve bought mine mostly from discounts seasons.

You can have 60+. They’re 800 gems each.
And I have like 1700 gems right now and can easily buy more. Sounds like I have zero reason to delete anyone. They can just stay off the main screen to the right…lol
I deleted my 80 human Elementalist just to make an Asura Elementalist. Best decision ever. Plus I’m starting to get attracted to my Asura.

I make a lot of temporary characters for various purposes. Mainly playing through the story (I’m trying to do every instance at least once) but also experiments like the one in my last post, themed characters for various player events and things and sometimes just because I feel like doing something different. Not all of them need to be level 80 of course (for example doing all the storylines needs 30 level 20’s but only 3 level 80’s).
Keeping every single one of them would require me to waste a lot of money on character slots for no real benefit since I don’t need them once I’ve done what I made them for. Sure sometimes it’s helpful to have a mule or a character to sit in a specific location, but I can do a lot of that with my permanent characters.
So I’d much rather delete them, reuse the slot and spend my money on something else.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
No, because that would be a waste of time.
Won’t they release a race change something or another soon? Or is that just my wishes?
@OP: glad you decided to hold on to your 80s. I would never delete one because (a) you can park at a JP or node farm and collect easy extra cash & (b) there’s often a niche that the original character will fill…much later down the road.
(Plus: storage and future birthday rewards.)
No, because that would be a waste of time.

Race change is highly unlikely. Anet are aware players have been asking for it since launch and their only response has been to say it would break too many things. I don’t understand the details but apparently a lot of stuff is tied to your race and not programmed to allow for it to change.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
About 20 times. I keep four mains and have six others that are just passing through their brief virtual lives. Level them, equip in a nice set of exotics, and then delete in a month or so. Not a good way to get rich.
I am pretty happy with GW2 these days. The only issue I have with ArenaNet is the hideous new UI; I have no clue and get lost with that skill “wheel” and talents, ,etc.
I also hate the fact that Warriors got a …..torch…..I mean, you name them Berserker and dont create a new weapon, the 2 handed axe!
With me having 9 slots going on 10 there is virtually no reason to delete anyone.
I deleted one level 80 for reasons. Regretted it later, especially after the 3rd birthday gift came out and after I remembered that she was my level 400 cook that had all the extra cooking recipes on her. I should have just parked her for a daily harvest.
ANet may give it to you.
I can’t imagine deleting a level 80 character after putting all that work into it (assuming it was non-tome leveled).

Sorry for my misinformation then.
IMO deleting an older character is not worth losing the birthday bonuses and earning gold to turn into gems for a character slot is a better way to go. I’ve deleted a couple 80s early on an regret it.
I am guilty of killing off:
1. sylvary warrior: the for greater justice shout was the final straw… Call me stupid but i would like a deeper voice for sylvary. Something that would remind me of a dark forest for instance. Take the tigers voice from the New junglebook adaption.
2. sylvary mes: same reason…
3. human guard: he was a pve remnant and my wvw guild wanted a bulky frontline.
4. norn guard: holy moly norn have a nice voice but run like treakle.
5. human, asura, norn engi: could not decide for an outfit.
This lead me to two thoughts. Please make race change a thing.
And if you could offer more voice packs via gem store i would sell you my dogs firstborn. I see no harm in choice. I apreciate it is a huge effort, but you could kitten if people would actually pay for it and if so cater to this voice hungry crowd

I would never delete a level 80 unless I had reached the maximum amount of character slots available.
ArenaNet proved with HoT that they are willing to change their direction and go for a better alternative than their old stubborn way of thinking, so you never know if one day a race change kit will be made, in which case there would be no point in deleting a max level character.

I have deleted:
2x Human Warriors for different reasons.
1x Norn Warrior (Full Berserker Unlocked)
1x Sylvari Warrior
1x Sylvari Guardian
1x Human Elementalist (Second character ever created. Dat Birthday bonus went poof)
2x Human Necromancers
1x Human Mesmer (Fourth ever created. Also Poofed)
1x Sylvari Ranger
1x Charr Ranger
1x Human Thief
1x Human Revenant (Full Herald Unlocked)
1x Asura Revenant (Full Herald Unlocked)
I’unno, leveling once you have loads of alts and tomes just becomes redonkelously easy, so I don’t really mind deleting over and over. I do it when I’m bored and get a new concept thrown into my head.
Thief – Duelist | Ranger – Strider | Engineer – Technician |
Elementalist – Spellweaver | Necromancer – Warlock | Mesmer – Trickster |

I deleted my male Norn Guardian and remade him as Sylvari. Lvl’d him straight to 80 with tomes though. Couldn’t bring myself to enjoy the disproportionate muscle-less race anymoar.
I deleted my second Sylvari Ranger who had world complete. Why? Needed the char slot so I cold make my second Engi and I have 11 (char slots) of them so I wasn’t going to buy another one lol…..
So, meh just do it. Getting to 80 is not hard and getting world complete is not even hard. So what have you got to lose?
When they revealed that Ranger elite spec would be Druid I made a human ranger and tome-leveled him straight to 80 in anticipation. After getting started in HoT I realized that if I really wanted a druid, it needed to be Norn so I would have access to shapeshifting. So I deleted and started over again, this time as a Norn, but I had burned all my tomes so I had to do it the long way. Still took less than 2 weeks so not a big loss of time.
I deleted a lvl 80 character in the past many years ago because I was stupid and I honestly regret it a lot, because I had a lego on it + the fact that you lose character age progression even.
It’s probably the only regret I ever had regarding GW2……
Highest I deleted was a 50-something because I didn’t want to pay $10 to change his name.
Other than that, I have money, and I like alts, so I just buy new character slots. :P

Apologies if this is a stupid question but what does shape shifting have to do with druids?
I suppose there’s a bit of a common theme in that druids use nature magic and the norn use the power of the spirits of the wild to change shape, but other than that I don’t see any connection between the two.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I have deleted 3 characters, but still retain 7 from 2012… my other 13 characters are a bit younger
Reasons why,
1st 2 cause they were Asura (an engineer and a DPS mesmer, I also had a condimesmer) and
2nd 1 ranger cause I had a druid/DPS build and a trapper and I couldn’t find a good reason to retain my 3rd ranger. The 2 asura slots became a new necro and a ranger, the ranger was deleted to make a thief
I later made a new mesmer and a new engineer. (HoT slots)
In the end the new engineer suffered the same fate as my also quite new revenant, they are both Ascneded ring storage Mules, the new mesmer became my chrono
Even though mules they have exotic armor and ascneded weapons, trinkets and backs…
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.
No deletions yet … I have a few level 80’s I haven’t equipped and used yet but I plan to eventually … Just have to decide which one(s) I want to play next.
I’ve deleted several.
#1: Norn Female Mesmer. This is back when mesmers kind of sucked in PVE. It just wasn’t fun playing her. So I deleted her and rolled a Norn Female Elementalist of the same design.
#2: Human Female Engineer. This is back when playing engineer hurt my wrists. I wanted the character I made to be my main, but I couldn’t main the engi. So, I deleted her, deleted my human male thief, then made a human female thief of the same design.
#3: Human male thief. See above. Eventually when mesmers got good I rerolled the same character design into a human male mesmer.
#4: Norn Male Ranger. I wanted to know what the big deal over ranger was, so I rolled one. Found I didn’t like how intense the playstyle was, and figured “hey, I like engis better. I’ll just roll a norn male engi”. So I made a norn male engi of the same design. Definitely loving scrapper hammer.
When I deleted these characters, they were fully skinned, full exotic (and some ascended), and had two full gearsets. Salvaging did eliminate some of the costs that went with it making a new toon, but overall it is an expensive endeavor.
Come to think of it, the only toons that are original in my pantheon of characters are my necro and guardian. Never once have I sought to reroll them.
the only thing you lose by deleting an 80 is the birthday rewards. All the Ascended stuff is account bound and who cares about exotics (salv that for Ectos).
I have dumped 3 80’s to rebuild them as not salads. Dumped leveling scrolls on them and boom done :-)
so its not a big deal, unless you care about birthday rewards.

ANET probably could confirm this.. I have raised and deleted about 8 to 10 (maybe more oO) – 80’s. Seriously. 2 rangers, 2 mesmers, a warrior, guardian (maybe 2 have a 3rd now), 2 thiefs, 1 maybe two engineers (can’t remember) until i decided on my Necro as main. And even after that…..i must like leveling?
Consumed Hate – Thief
Unlucky Scrub – Ranger
@OP.
No. Probably never will. I’d rather add a slot and keep the birthday rewards. I can always park them somewhere for harvesting/opening a chest.
Hint:
Everything looks to be going on sale this month, so I anticipate Character Slots will too. I have some gems set aside for that.
If by deleting a lvl 80, you mean have I ever curb-stomped a player so hard in PvP or WvW that their GW2 account was erased out of sheer embarrassment, and the player had to adopt an Amish life in order to regain some semblance of purpose and sanity?
… then, no.
~EW
P.S. I’ve also never deleted my own lvl 80 character, nor ever adopted an Amish life.
I deleted a L80 without thinking of consequences, about a month before its third BDay. Cost me a dye. If I’d thought, I’d have waited until after.
I deleted quite a few lvl 80s. No regrets.
meh i ve made and deleted about 14 engineers myself of every race and gender
I deleted a level 80 Char engineer and level 80 human warrior to change their races. I also “retired” (but have not deleted) a norn guardian.
The Char just did not suit the engineer class (imo) and the size of the norn was annoying to play (blocked out my vision for timing counter-skills and I hate jumping with them so I made a second human guardian).
I’ve deleted several 80’s remade them, took them to 80 again and deleted yet again. I have a problem and no real life to speak of so I have more time than you normal people…..yep.
