The Cantha Thread [Merged]
Cantha was epic. I’m landsick and need some jade sea.
According to one of my friends that played GW1 avidly and is also a ST fan, not having Cantha in this game would be the equivalent of not having the Klingon Faction in ST. It’s unforgivable in his opinion.
I support Cantha and Elona
Oh yeah, people talk about cantha, but in the end it was elona that had one of the most played high end pve areas.
Cantha is by far the most missed map in gw1. Frankly anet owe it to the loyal guild wars players to bring it back. We pay their salaries, they should give us Cantha
First of all, thank you to the developers for the awesome jade dragon weapon skins. As a fan of Cantha and Guild Wars in general these new weapons have made me really excited.
I hope that these jade weapons are only the beginning of bringing more of Cantha’s style and influence into the game, even if we may never get to venture there. I spent many hundreds of hours in the original Guild Wars playing all of the campaigns and the expansion and though I enjoyed all of the environments Cantha has always held a special place in my heart; judging by this thread I am not alone in that.
I am confused though? If you are trying to be culturally considerate. Lets say i am Asian and i want to make my character look Asian right. Well you won’t let me, because the character creation will not let me create an Asian inspired character. Why is that we have no Cantha. Cantha allowed the creation of an Asian character. The human creation in GW2 will not let me choose to look like an Asian. So I am confused what is culturally considerate not creating an Asian themed location for who knows why. Or not allowing me to create an Asian looking character who reflects what i look like. The only human i can create look like Europeans and North Americans. I believe it is culturally inconsiderate to assume that i would want to make my character look like a North American or European are you implying they are the only ok human race to be?

:)
There’s a few faces that are Asian, although their presets may not really reflect that initially…But I have two characters who are Asian/Canthan..I know you’re just using it as an example but I figured I’d chime in in case you were having a bit of trouble finding a face that suits you. There definitely does need to be MORE choices, though and way more oriental hairstyles. There’s like, two…lol And you are right, it is incosiderate to leave out the Asian player base, or to slight them even if it’s not intentional, hopefully this will change as they prepare to launch the game in China & Korea.
Cantha had several great choices, and I would like to see some of those brought back in GW2, even if they are modified and updated to reflect the more modern era Tyria is entering into.
I would love to see Cantha return to the game, it was definitely one of my favorite areas of the game. I spent so many hours there, and I would love to be able to go back in the Guild Wars 2 engine and see it again
From what I’ve been hearing, these are Canthan pirates that invaded Lion’s Arch during the Dragon Bash. Not only that, one of the representatives had an Asian inspired physical appearance and I’d say the new NPC in “Dead End” does as well.
Could this possibly be a story arch that eventually leads us to Cantha or introduces more Canthan influence into the game?

I highly doubt it. There are still numerous places in mainland Tyria that we have yet to visit before we can even consider traversing the Sea of Sorrows and Unending Ocean.
The portal in Brisban Wildlands leading into the Maguuma Wastes
Crystal Desert
EoTN areas
Ring of Fire
Marhan’s Grotto
Just to name a few of the possibilities

Besides, culling would prevent you from even seeing Canthan land on the horizon.

Haha true, but they did say they’re working on the culling (add it to the list, I guess).

I more meant that rather than it being confirmed cut from the game, could this maybe lead up to some sort of confirmation that Cantha will be returning eventually and that we’ll eventually head back there?

Very cool! They are Canthan pirates, right? I didn’t read that wrong?

There are two things about GW1 that makes me Shiver.
First is Ascalon pre-searing.
Second is Shing Jea Island. (oh and this outpost called: “The Marketplace”)
I was really hoping that when they said we’d hear familiar music that it would be the Canthan Login music from Guild Wars 1. So disappointed Bring back Cantha!
The login music from Factions gives me nostalgia chills to this day every time I hear it. It must return. And to whoever linked that reddit post, that’s all fine and well, but until it’s confirmed by a dev tag on forums or on the GW2 official site, take whatever you see in-game with a grain of salt.
These little teases with jade weapons, Canthan NPCs, Pirates, etc. are really either very misleading, a ploy to give us our “Canthan Fix” or may actually be leading up to something.

I don’t think they would tease us to give us our Canthan fix, without making it abundantly clear that it’s all directly and completely Canthan, we don’t know for sure if it has anything to do with Cantha or if there just happens to be two Canthan characters involved. So I do not believe that’s what they’re doing. While Cantha itself may be a very long ways off (for all we know, anyway) they can still involve Canthan’s in the game, ongoing story, and world and develop content that brings the culture as it is today into the whole scheme of things.
I’m conflicted on the what the new characters mean, and I’m skeptical about Margory having anything to do with Cantha because of her name, even though she definitely looks Canthan. Mai on the other hand makes me think it totally is Canthan due to her name, but then she looks nothing like one….I don’t understand that face choice if she is in fact Canthan.
It’s not hard to figure out by my name that I would really love to see Cantha back. I bought GW1 Proph. like 2 weeks after Factions launched and that login music made me buy the expansion the very next day. A lot of my firsts were in Cantha like my first level 20, my first 15plat armor set was luxon, My first 100% map completion was Cantha as well, I beat the story countless times, I spent sooooo much time wandering the Jade sea and sitting at a few picture perfect locales just to look at them. I spent thousands of hours in Cantha and just finished Proph, EotN, and NF out of obligation. Factions I finished because I loved it.
I’ve opened thousands of coffers to get those jade skins because I want to be reminded of Cantha in any way I can. If this is some sort of segway to visit Cantha say no more and just take my money. If it’s not in the cards because NCsoft wants to play pirates; fine, let me build Cantha myself.
I love Cantha, it is what kept me in GW1 for so long and the only reason I ever went back. Bring it back because omitting it because of “creative decisions” will cost Anet and NCsoft some of their most loyal players.
Bring back Cantha and Elona!
I know I posted this in the Mariner’s Horn thread, but here’s a bit of nostalgia for all GW1 Faction fans

Every time I hear it, my GW1 memories spring back to life.
Edit: oh god, I have to stop listening or it’ll make me tear up….

1225 posts clearly means this is something to heavily consider Anet.

Hum…I don’t get it, they’re allied with Inquest and there’s Norns and Charrs among the crew…knowing that Cantha does not exactly see other species in a good light right now, I wonder what make you think they’re canthan. Of canthan origin maybe, logical for Pirates from the unending ocean, but actual Canthans?

They aren’t, stop the hype. I used to share the canthan pirate opinion, but this is busted.

Canthan’s as a whole have never been Xenophobic or racist against other species as they’ve co-existed with other species for centuries upon centuries. It was the last known Emperor like 200+ years ago who became Xenophobic eventually and forced the issue. We do not know what’s happened since then, and for all we know when that Emperor went, so did the Xenophobia and that would be a most likely situation, as he would of only ruled 1 generation, if that.
As for the Sky Pirates being Canthan’s…In one way it would make sense. The ocean between Cantha & the northern part of Tyria where we are would be very dangerous, even after Zhaitan’s death as it’s recent and would take time for that mess to die down completely. So they would probably travel by air to reach where we are right now, if they wanted or needed to.
On the other hand, they don’t look particularly Canthan aside from the names we’ve seen, and of course Marjory although she’s from Divinity’s Reach as far as I know and thus probably only of Canthan heritage like a big chunk of DR, but not from the mainland which would explain why her name is Marjory.
It’s possible that this is more of a prelude to Cantha, or at least a Canthan element being brought into the game over all, rather than being a full on Canthan related situation. I have a feeling that when we do see Cantha, it will be a long time from now. I hope I’m wrong, but at the same time a Canthan presence would be very welcome in the interrum.

Bring back Cantha in an expansion!
I agree with this thread
AH! Master Togo!
I don’t want the next expansion to be Cantha because we all know there are tons of undiscovered places throughout Tyria, however, i just want someone to tell me, “Yes, in the future at some point, we will add an expansion which is about Cantha.”
If the developers of gw2 even remotely cared bout gw1 they wouldn’t ignore 2 giant landmasses just because of something minor they themselves blowing up out of proportions. Sometimes you do for your fans a great service not to appease to them but to be able to look down the road and realize this is how the game is destined to live and be proud it had a chance to revisit this land in a possible brand new light.
Cantha was awesome in GW1, now just imagine Cantha in GW2 with these graphics and artwork, oh god it would be so amazing!!
Exactly! +1:)
I can say that the biggest reason i tryed GW2 , and got a game, was the hope to see Cantha one day!
Please Anet, do what ever you like, but NEVER dismiss Cantha!!
Bring back Cantha and Elona! That was amazing universe, you cannot remove them!
Shiro Tagachi Strikes back! You can’t kill whats not dead or alive!

Actually, I’d love to fight Shiro gain, for the third time.
Or who knows, maybe Abadon didn’t actually die, maybe he is behind all the elder dragons.

Or who knows, maybe Abadon didn’t actually die, maybe he is behind all the elder dragons.
As far as I’m aware, the elder dragons predate the old gods (if I remember my lore). Perhaps its possible that some of the gods even got their powers from the dragons themselves (my theory) since some of the lore states that gods like Abaddon received their powers from yet older gods (wiki). There is a lot of story/lore that we don’t know.
Considering how Abaddon was the defining catalyst for the first 3 games, it’s very possible that there are grander schemes in the story that are not yet revealed. Makes for an interesting theorycrafting session.
Still, I don’t think I want to see any more of Shiro or the Lich. They were brats in the Realm of Torment. Pretty sure we killed them sufficiently (again). Although…I do wonder what happens to a soul that gets killed in the afterlife….
There is no concrete reason why cantha cannot be brought back.. in gw1 the lore was all intertwined with all of tyrias continents.. cantha included..
if anet decided to omit cantha as a whole from Gw2 it would have serious repurcussions on the lore of the guildwars universe.. and dont even get me started on the books..
PLEASE bring Cantha back to gw2. with gw1 i had always enjoyed buying expansions to live through its vibrant story.
the story of gw1 was to me equivalent to that of a book. Anet you must reconsider.. I insist =)
I reckon Shiro could take down two elder dragons at once.
I agree whole heartedly. Don’t leave out Factions, I loved that add-on!!! It scared me more than playing tyria as it was a big challenge at the start. I loved the music, style of the npcs, towns, foes etc. I really want to see my black Kurzick 15k warrior armour again, it was my main set Anet have to be crazy to not revisit Cantha! I also liked Nightfall, but I hated EotN big time.
I reckon Shiro could take down two elder dragons at once.
I still remember skill named “Impossible Odds” he used.
He’d definitely win.
I cry a little every time i see this picture and know it didn’t make the games release.
oh man, where did you find that pic Vizen?
Based on the number of posts on this thread, im sure there will be riots outside anet HQ if Cantha is not delivered within a year lol.
Cantha was fun and challenging, and with the new engine, I’m sure it would be simply awesome.
As far as cultural considerations, I support that to a point. No one wants to trample rough-shod over cultural elements; however, you can’t un-ring the Canthan bell: it’s an integral part of the Guild Wars universe and should remain as fertile ground for the creative excellence shown by the developers thus far.
The story and the experience of the game play should be the primary focus. There are always going to be purists of some sort that seem to not be able to remember that this is a game and not a treatise on the complexities of cultural identity and interaction.
Let’s make with the multi-cultural, multi-species beat down of dragons and other nefarious types!
Keep this thread alive =)
ARENANET CANTHA PUT IN GUILD WARS 2 PLEASE!!!
Factions was a good expansion but I am afraid of what this new Anet will do with something that a lot of people hold dear.

If you people are wondering why NCSoft destroyed our beloved Canthan district and did not display any of our continent, it’s because of Blizzard. When Guild Wars 2 was going to be released, Mists of Pandaria was released with an Asian style. The Devs did not want to look like they were copying Blizzard, so they got rid of Canthan District.
We most likely will never see Cantha again.

That has nothing to do with it, at all. The reasons for this were explained by Josh Foreman many pages back. There’s decent chance we’ll see the district rebuilt through a living story, or something. But NCsoft was rumored to have been concerned about too many asian themes being used in GW2’s launch, as they had anticipated Blade & Soul would be launching in the U.S. relatively closely after GW2. That hasn’t, and won’t be happening as that game is a good year – year and a half away from our market still according to NCsoft, and so I think that concern is gone and ArenaNet can do what they want.
