Introducing a dungeon experience like no other—Fractals of the Mists! You’ll be pitted against a series of unique “fractal” mini-dungeons that get harder and harder as you progress, giving you unlimited levels of challenge! With great risk comes great reward, including new weapon sets, a back-slot item, new Ascended loot, and much more!

WUT?!
Are you telling me that the only way to earn this new items is through the new dungeons?

And what if i don’t like dungeons?
This is insane…

Rift is doing just fine….

SWTOR certainly isn’t.

I reactivated the other day to have a quick look at how it had progressed and there is a tiny list of servers after many server merges.

Whether it’s still profitable is another story of course. Less players means smaller costs for servers, bandwidth, customer support, etc.

I didn’t say anythiing about SWTOR though… *but they are going F2P this Thursday so they will be getting a population boom and it might even save it!

Rift still is doing quite well. Heck so is Lord of the Rings Online because of their successful F2P model.

So there are “WoW Clones” out there and doing well.
Just sayin!

How does this effect WvW? If my opponent has Ascended Uber Armour, the skill of the player goes out the window and it becomes the best geared who will win.

Not true.

A guy in full exotics/ascended armor can just flat out suck.

Skill still owns gear, if your gear is reasonable (don’t go into wvw at level 80 wearing whites).

Yeah I think people are over speculating the stat-increase…. assuming of course there even is one or that it will somehow translated into any part of the game other than that dungeon. Personally, i think it’s just a mis-interpretation and likely is more inscriptions with the treadmill being related to improving the equipment to tackle the dungeon… but hopefully this blog post will clear matters up.

Whether skill or gear matter more is irrelevent. Most of us want to have the best gear a game has to offer, but we do NOT want grind. We want to get our exotics and be finished. We want to be FREE to play whatever part of the game we enjoy. Adding in a new tier of gear, regardless of how small the stat increase is – it’s still an increase and goes against everything we were promised.

I watched a lot of their videos. They promised that there would be no grind. I knew they couldn’t do it.

Why?

MMO’s, by nature, are a grind. You cannot avoid it. You want to craft? It’s a grind. YOu want that new skin? That’s a grind. You want badges? That’s a grind. sPVP is even a grind.

It’s all a grind. It’s only how you want to see the grind. Right now, you don’t want to see a dungeon that has armor upgrades attached to it. That would be MORE grind, not adding to a grindless game.

All Anet can do is try to minimize it, which they did a good job with. Getting rid of the grind? Not happening. The only way that happens is if we all logged on, at launch, being level 80. All crafts maxed out. All gear was free. You already have the best gear in the game. All PoI’s/Vista’s/maps are unlocked….you get the point.

That, is a grindless game. And would probably be a boring one at that, at least for me.

Gear grind is entirely different from crafting grind, map completion grind, sPvP grind, etc. The latter is not a grind, it’s just you playing the game in whatever manner you enjoy most. Gear grind is required before you can really enjoy yourself. People want to have the best gear possible, and then they can start having fun with a game.

SWTOR failed for many reasons other than being a WoWclone.

I’m sure you are going to say Aion went free to play for other reasons, Age of Conan lost more than half of its subscribers within 3 months for other reasons, Warhammer Online has been dying for other reasons, Vanguard closed due to other reasons, and so on…

Is there any really successful WoW clone?

No?

And so you want Guild Wars 2 to become a WoW clone why, exactly?

It was required in GW1, only way to progress against the Mursaat was to be ascended and infused. Ascended Items will likely be pretty easy to get, and infused items will be found in any dungeon. They will come in a small variety of backpieces likely.

Oh, I hope those new monsters will have a skill that can obliterate whole groups of people without ascended armor. I loved that part in GW1, when you got hit with Spectral Agony and had about 3 seconds for someone to put PS on you. Point was, though: Infusion in GW1 was relatively easy to obtain. How much do we have to work for the GW2 version of infusion? Does the unique event line that never runs again have something to do with it? Will it reward players that have “been there” by giving them infusion rewards?
Questions above questions.

Oh, and as of right now, the best guess of how Infusion will work is to look at how it did in GW1:

Sad to say but I’m with everyone else in that I would likely leave the game for good if they start releasing better stat gear.

I like the idea of being able to hit max stat, take a break for a while, and then come back and not have to replace all of my gear because now I’m geared like a loser. I quit WoW because of that nonsense. Nothing like spending months to get a set of armor only to be considered POS three months later. What the heck is the point!

Sounds like this new ascended set is yet another “tier” of armor. Boo I say. Boo!

Of course I will wait to see what it ACTUALLY is before making hasty decisions.

What!? You’re going to wait and see what happens before you make a decision?!?!?
This is unheard of!!

I don’t like this idea, either. The main reason why I’m playing gw2 instead of mop is that all max gears have identical stats.

They promised no grind would be required. Optional grinds are optional, if you don’t want to do it you will be at no disadvantage.

They failed out of the box, though.

1-80 Grind. (30-80 wasn’t the plateau they promised…I’m fine with it, though…it was still way to easy to level).
Crafting?? Getting the mats?? If you want to buy the mats, get the gold…which is a grind to get in itself.
Exotics. Crafting/money/dungeons. All grinds.

These are the musts in GW2, and they are all linked somehow.

Adding a new tier of gear isn’t going to make the grind that much worse. All it does is add more content to a game that was 60 bucks. Yea, I think you guys forgot, it’s a sub-free game. More content = good.

Get the gear, be happy. Enjoy the new infusion thingy…whatever it is.

I’m pretty sure that the faction of people who prefer only visual updates in GW2 is much bigger than the guys who want to become more powerful. Now it seems the later ones are the more vocal ones… :-/

The players that would want it in gw2 are bigger then the ones that dont. Yet, i know it wont happen, even though i find no character progression and gear treadmill beeing boring, ateast gw2 did something for me making me realize that.
To bad theres no new mmo with great 3 side pvp, tab targeting, holy trinity and gear treadmill :/

Only endgame in gw2 is grind, more repetative grind then in most mmos, short grindy dungeons, massive grind for karma etc. Just that the grind leads to nothing.

jumping puzzles, map completion etc should be side things to do, not the main game.

So explain to us why all WoW clones have failed, with the latest being The Old Republic. It’s easy to say “the majority of MMO players want feature X, which is just like WoW”, ignoring how WoW clones are dying all around.

Rift is doing just fine….

Your response to my post is actually a great example of taking a little thing of something, blowing it way out of context, and ultimately accusing that person of something never actually stated.

Doing well is when a game can still release good or even big content patches. (Like Rift and LOTRO have done).

If you take a game like Star Trek Online for example, that is F2P and hasn’t released any major content in over a year, that would be a failing MMO.
Also City of Heroes who just shut down. Those are examples of not doing well.

Again there are WoW Clones that are doing fine, even if some of you don’t want to admit it. (Not sure why though….)

Ascended likely just produces a PVE bonus against a particular enemy.. in this case the Karka…. the enemy the entire update is based around.

Okay, let me put some numbers on it, using Guild Wars 1 as the model:

In GW1, max-power weapon inscriptions generally came in two varieties: Those that increased your damage by 15%, and had a positive conditional (bonus only applies if your health is above 50%, if you’re enchanted, etc), and those that increased your damage by 20%, and had a negative conditional (bonus only applies if your health is below 50%, or if you’re suffering from a hex or condition, etc).

There were also PvE-only, enemy-specific inscriptions (… Of Charrslaying, Demonslaying, Ogreslaying, etc). These gave 20% bonuses to damage, if and only if you were fighting the specific type of enemy for that particular inscription.

If that is what Ascended Equipment and Infusions do – if they offer an effective 5% increase in effectiveness versus a specific type of enemy, while inflicting an effective 15% penalty against every other kind of enemy – then there is no problem with them.

If they offer any benefit beyond that, they should have no place in Guild Wars 2.

So how does this fit to “slightly better” armour and infusions “that make characters even more powerful”? I thought there would be a limit at max level for Numbers, but apparently you can always count a +1 … even in GW2.

Here’s hoping “Ascended” gear works like “Infused” gear did in the original GW.

If not, you’re going to need all new FINE transmutation stones to keep the current look that you’ve got. (Unless you want to look just like everyone else does with their Ascended gear.)

If ArenaNet adds an all new gear-grind… Then they’ve failed. They’ve failed at fixing the grinding issues with the game.

I’m guessing the new dungeon will have all the same issues that existing dungeons do, only that it’ll contain “Ascended” gear which will make people grind the dungeon for it.

ArenaNet doesn’t really appear to be focusing on fixing any complaints about the game (like dungeons, for one) before adding new content. It’s doubtful they’ll ever actually stop to fix their past mistakes.

If they keep going like this, I’d be surprised if Guild Wars 2 doesn’t wind up like Diablo 3… Where it’s essentially a ghost town.

Yeah no offense to players that bought stuff… but in an ever evolving game that might have an expansion, did you really think the items you had would be the best forever? That’s like buying an Audi or whatever and thinking they’re never coming out with a better model.

The max-stat weapons that I found in Guild Wars 1 on April 25, 2005, during the early-access headstart event, before the game even technically officially launched, are still equipped on my characters on November 12, 2012, and are still exactly as powerful as the absolute best equipment that you can get in the game, after seven and a half years, and three expansions.

So yes, I thought that having Exotic weapons in Guild Wars 2 would be ‘safe’ from gear inflation, less than three months later.

Yeah, but how do you think you would fare if you decided you liked, say, the vabbi set and then decided to go back and fight mursaat with your new vabbi armor before infusing it?

And that would be a good thing? If they are more powerful than exotics, they shouldn’t be easier to get than exotics as that would make the exotics useless.

And if they really are more powerful than exotics, I quit. Because then I can no longer trust ANet that there wouldn’t be any gear progression. All progression would be horizontal, not vertical.

You’re only progressing in your head mate.

The monster gets +20 toughness, so you need to find a weapon that has +20 power to make up the difference. This isn’t adding new content, it’s devaluing the time you already spent and forcing you to spend more. It’s stupid.

However, with this change I am afraid that the game I have since release loved is going to transform into a bad gear grind. I am playing this game because I want the freedom offered by the non-grind model. Making gear which is better than exotic outdates the current dungeons as well as the current high level areas (everyone will be farming the new dungeon). I believe that Arenanet should have kept those for an expansion. Disappointing news overall.

They failed out of the box, though.

1-80 Grind. (30-80 wasn’t the plateau they promised…I’m fine with it, though…it was still way to easy to level).

There’s waaaaay more content than you ever need to reach level 80. Nothing has to ever be repeated.

So where’s the grind? You choosing to grind the same mobs / content repeatedly does not mean that ANet made you grind.

Crafting?? Getting the mats?? If you want to buy the mats, get the gold…which is a grind to get in itself.

Optional. and gathering mats happens while you are doing other content. Unless you choose to grind out material farming.

Exotics. Crafting/money/dungeons. All grinds.

Please, I had enough gold when I hit 80 to buy a full set of exotics. I now have a couple of sets, including some T3 cultural armour transmuted into one set, and am considering getting a third. People who die a lot, waypoint excessively or buy new gear every other level may be lacking in currency but that’s no one’s fault but their own.

These are the musts in GW2, and they are all linked somehow.

Leveling and getting gear, the bits which do not need to be grinds unless you choose to grind them, are musts.

Crafting is optional.

Adding a new tier of gear isn’t going to make the grind that much worse. All it does is add more content to a game that was 60 bucks. Yea, I think you guys forgot, it’s a sub-free game. More content = good.

Gear which required dungeons? Instead of the current system where I can get the top tier gear any way I choose? Yeah, I see that as being worse.

More content does indeed equal good. But higher level gear is NOT content. I will never complain that the dungeon is being added. I’ll only complain if it gives an advantage over other people.

SoE have finally been knocked off the top spot
in the list of developers I have the least faith & trust in.
Congratulations ArenaNet!

I do NOT think this is going to turn into the problem WoW has. Grind this to get this so you can do this to replace everything you got so you can do this and replace everything you worked so hard on over and over again.

I personally have beaten some explorer mode paths in Arah in full greens back before I could afford better armor. And nobody knew because you cant check people and I was skilled enough to dodge and keep myself alive and do what I needed to be useful.

Now I have 3 professions to 80 all in exotic gear and I find myself wishing I could customize or specialize my character a little more into a specific area. And maybe they are starting to work into that with this infusion slot. It could allow you to boost specific abilities or attributes of your choice outside of what runes do.

An easy way to get people to calm down is just allow craftsman to put infusion slots on other gear.

Now you have opened a whole new area in the market for craftsman.
You have allowed people to further specify how they want to play the profession they enjoy.
Added more content for people to work at with out killing what they have already worked so hard on.
AND your opening doors for harder mechanics, bosses, dungeons, areas, so on.

Is this what they have in mind? Maybe or maybe not but with how much time they spent developing this game I am sure they have given it more thought then o people are crying about this or that lets quick change everything we built this game upon.

P.S. In my opinion eventually the current exotic gear will be replaced with better gear. We will see new crafting recopies we will see new dungeon gear we will see new event gear. It allows for harder content and new ways to play. If that really angers people to the point they have to quit the game maybe an MMORPG is not right for you…

Yeah apparently we were suppose to be experiencing end-game throughout the entire leveling process, but I must be the only one that feels let down in the department.

No, not the only one.

There’s a reason why the games population is lowering. Nothing to do at level 80 was one. sPVP was two. WvW being called “casual” by a dev was three.

But it seems people want nothing to do at level 80 it seems. Run around with a 100% unlocked map. Full upgraded gear for the duration of the games lifespan. You’ll max out your crafts…then what?

Eek.

Yeah, but how do you think you would fare if you decided you liked, say, the vabbi set and then decided to go back and fight mursaat with your new vabbi armor before infusing it?

Vabbian armour is an entirely cosmetic change with no statistical benefits compared to my existing armour, which I still have and I can still wear if I want to, for whatever reason, go fight some Mursaat without bothering to Infuse – and I won’t be any less powerful than if I did go through with Infusing the Vabbian armour.

That’s a pretty bad example, anyway. Infusion in general was a bad mechanic in Guild Wars 1, and you’ll notice that ArenaNet never went back and replicated it or made anything similar in later expansions.

I’m just gonna say it.

The whole no gear progression thing worked for GW1. It was a small game with a low level cap…very VERY pvp based.

That will not fly here. GW2 is already losing numbers; and will continue to. There is nothing to do at level 80! Playing dress up only goes so far.

A gear treadmill would be where you are constantly powering up your gear (look at traditional MMOs). If Anet employs this every 3-6 months…How in the heck is that a treadmill (upgrading your armor every 3-6 months…or what ever is NOT a treadmill..geez)? For an actual gamer, that’s still slow as kitten. All the while, you’re still stuck at level 80.

This game will continue to lose more players if there’s isn’t anything to do on the PVE side of things. Right now, the end game is playing dress up…and I’m already done with that.

New skins? What if I don’t like them? Stuck waiting for the next batch.

For an actual gamer like me. I play lots of other games. Devoting months of play time to keep up with a gear curb is a nightmare for me. It becomes a job. During gw1 there were years of time I didn’t spend playing, but I could always pick the game back up and be with the best of the best. I didn’t have to grind badge gear so I can be told I needed t10 to do a t9 raid.

This is what I don’t get.

You run your dungeons, you get the gear. You would have anyway to gasp get the new skins! Which you guys where OK with anyway.

So we are OK with a meaningless skin grinds. But if they add stats to it, which are all static btw, once and awhile…shame on them!

People are comparing this to raids and whatnot. Most likely, this will take a little long that your usual exotic, with dungeon runs. You’re done in a week. Yay! Even the most hardcore of hardcore’s weren’t even fully geared in traditional MMO’s after few months in.

The difference? One is super casual. The other is a time investment/treadmill…feels like you’re going nowhere. Hence the reason the word was used. How treadmill is even used in GW2 is beyond me.

I kinda have a feeling this gear will be stupid easy to get…and everyone here will look like dummies for making a big deal over nothing. 6 months from now? Another upgrade? Good! I’m sick of feeling like I’m going nowhere in these games (meaning having nothing to do but twiddle my thumbs/chat to my guild). Grind for a week…get that set. /cheer

I remember reading threads that if they were to have gear progression, make it easy at least. Gear is stupid easy to get in this game. This new kitten? Probably the same.

Dyn, MrLee, You’re only seeing one side of it, it’s not so much as the grind as having to grind. The player who grinds for skins does it because they want to and not because they need to. Gear progression in most mmo’s is required to complete continuing harder content, hence the vicious cycle. Most players were under the impression the greedy gear grind was not the GW2 model so it’s obvious why most are upset to see this change. I mean no different then the hardcore wowtards being peeved if gear reached it’s finite cap in wow.

See I really don’t see it like that. I see it as something new to do.
I mean we are all here to play a game right? If they do introduce a more powerful gear then I am sure they will make more than one way to get it. Dungeons or Crafting, who knows!

I see it as adding content for people who WANT the gear chase. People don’t like that, fine. Then they don’t have to do it! Just like if they don’t want to do something now, they have that choice. Because if they do introduce stronger gear in the game, IMO it isn’t going to be that much of a boost, if at all.

But we won’t know until ArenaNet puts up their blog post or whenever they feel like doing it.

You can’t have one without affecting the other. The player that chooses not to will be left behind. Most were under the impression that future content would be added without constant gear progression. So while you enjoy your type of gameplay it’s at the expense of others and the latter effects no one, see my point?

Only endgame in gw2 is grind, more repetative grind then in most mmos, short grindy dungeons, massive grind for karma etc. Just that the grind leads to nothing.

jumping puzzles, map completion etc should be side things to do, not the main game.

Did it ever occur to you to play games for entertainment purposes instead of to have a bigger number in your character window?

You know, buying a game which you enjoy and playing because it’s fun?

Crazy thought, I know.

Has everyone here lost their minds? You’re panicking over something you don’t fully yet understand? Can we PLEASE wait until they actually put this stuff in the game and find out what it means before we stampede? I mean really, remember Halloween, when they said they were having an amazing one-time event that you really must attend, and everyone lost their freaking minds over it because of work, church, timezones, whatever, and then this magical once in a lifetime event turned out to be a 10 second cut scene? Yeah. This is going to be exactly the same thing. A whole lot of panic over nothing.

Disappointing. I felt very displeased when I heard “slightly better than exotic”. This change outdates all the current content, eg the dungeons and the high level areas. It’s been only 3 months in this game and all the talk about non grinding gameplay is going to the rubbish bin for unknown reasons.

This should pretty much close the thread. Did you really expect, in all realness, no change in gear stats, ever?

Reality is the majority of MMO players want a gear treadmill.

So explain to us why all WoW clones have failed, with the latest being The Old Republic. It’s easy to say “the majority of MMO players want feature X, which is just like WoW”, ignoring how WoW clones are dying all around.

Rift is doing just fine….

You mean the game that just (abruptly) shutdown half of it’s remaining servers due to “awesome new server tech” and has to constantly give people reasons (look at all this cool stuff we will give you!!) to prepay months (if not years) worth of subscriptions to meet revenue goals? yeah, doing fine indeed.

There are major companies looking at what Trion has done for their servers and they want to do the same to theirs.

Here is CNN for example.
http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/10/cnn-looks-at-rifts-server-technology/

But I am sure you will still see this as “Rift Fails Hard”.

That article was from 4/10/11 – if you have played Rift for any amount of time on one of the more populous servers (say, Faeblight) you would know what a horrible, laggy mess it is when a zone wide event takes place. In fact, because of how they have their servers coded, an event taking place on the live server affects RAID instances – oh how fun HK was with lag from Ember Isles events…total failure. 3s+ lag between key presses being recognized by the server makes for a fun game…

Just sayin!

That really depends on what you mean by “doing well”.

Everybody knows that Rift is just a place for people who have grown to despise Blizzard, but still love WoW. It has no unique identity.

All F2P games will retain some kind of player base.

I actually love Rift.

It at first was my “anti-WoW” but Trion has done a pretty awesome job.

Rift is how a subscription based MMO should be run. The amount of content Rift has added in a year is almost as much as a full blown expansion.

I don’t support the adding of a new gear tier that is statistically better.
