You realize that you are living in a world where everywhere you go, everything you do is done exactly like this – it’s good business really.

Walk through a mall, a store, read the news, a magazine it is simply everywhere, you can’t escape it. ANet would be foolish not to employ methods that are working for virtually everything. Free samples at the supermarket, 30 day and your money back etc. etc. this kind of marketing is as old as the idea of marketing itself.

I admire your principles but you are living in a fantasy world if you think that you are insulated from this. ANet doesn’t treat us like lab rats, they are following marketing principles that work everywhere. It is you the educated consumer that will make the decision on whether to “buy” or not.

Yeah its kinda like getting your free sub card punched when you buy a sub sandwich somewhere. Alot of us are getting rewarded for something we are already doing anyway so alot of people are going to see it as positive. Myself included.

And if you’re not doing it anyway there’s a good chance you’re not going to care about the reward. I’ve gotten a lot of those punch card type things, and I don’t think I’ve ever filled one because I don’t go often enough and in between I lose them or give up on filling it and throw it away.

I’ve never found a 1/2 used one and decided I should really buy more sandwiches or coffee or whatever in order to fill it and get my reward.

Even the supermarket I normally go to offering a reward card scheme doesn’t stop me going to the one that’s closer and cheaper if that’s more convenient. (The quality of their products on the other hand does persuade me to make the extra effort.)

But maybe I’m the weird one here. Earlier today I was trying to explain to someone why IMO the fact that I’ve owned and enjoyed every Nintendo console since the SNES is absolutely no reason to buy a Wii U unless and until they release games I want to play enough to justify the cost. I don’t really do company/product loyalty, even when I do find a company or product I love using.

Yeah same here. That “sub card” doesn’t really do much to make you come back when you normally wouldn’t.

But lets say you do go somewhere to enjoy a product or shop somewhere on a regular basis. Does them offering some kinda loyalty program really lessen the quality or make the organization less legitimate? of course not. Which is the argument some people are trying to make which just seems silly.

People that don’t enjoy the game are not going to log on for a reward in a game they don’t play. The log in rewards are to keep current players satisfied with the game’s rewards to the point they might keep playing regularly.

This is really not worth complaining about. Dailies change, so what? It’s just dailies. The new system looks all right.

Meanwhile after the CDI there is still no guild halls or raids announcement, no GvG CDI, no new WvW or PvP maps, no new skills or weapon types, no SAB… These are things worth complaining about, not the new dailies.

Dailies required actual work to be done. This doesn’t. Simple as that. Why reward this behaviour?

First, it’s not work, and it’s not healthy to think of it as such. It’s play, and it’s something you should only do in your spare time. As to why they reward it, I suspect that they believe (correctly or not) that if someone logs every day in they are more likely to get sucked into a group activity than if they did not log in for months. It’s an incentive to increase your odds of playing consistently.

Really? This is a thing? You really are going to have the options to reward people to login instead of actually playing the game for rewards? This is in my honest opinion a terrible idea and needs to be considered for evaluation. What say you forums? I understand the reasoning behind doing this (to attain higher login rates/sales) obviously but the real issue is the people who don’t find the need to play the game to actually earn rewards, which is unfair to the people who participate in the community and actually DO earn rewards by playing, contributing something to the community.

I think its a bit much to think people that already don’t play the game are going to log in every day for rewards they won’t use.

People that play the game will still have more rewards than those that don’t. You will have your log-in rewards plus whatever you earn by playing.

It is just extra incentive to log in and play regularly which alot of us are already doing.

I say you should care less, OP.

The gw2 community seems so focused on rewards it almost seems a crime to suggest anet shouldn’t be passing out goodies left and right. Whether it’s desperate or not is in the eye of the beholder. Anet could be passing out legendaries for logging in. . . to your forum account and I couldn’t care less.

Just because you ignore what i said don’t make your points any more valid either.
I can only repeat myself at this point as your question is already answered: It’s supposed to push people over the edge who are unsure whether to log in or not. This is not aimed at the majority. The ‘first’ reward is being given out for just logging in. Next stage would be ‘doing dailies’ for an hour or so and voila, you’r actively playing again, back from having not played at all. What this change does is divides the perceived ‘barrier of entry’ from ‘having to log in and do dailies, which can be viewed as a lengthy process into stages 1’ log in and cash in reward #1’ and 2 ‘play a bit and cash in reward #2’.

I’m sorry if I use words you perceive as buzzwords but trying to get a point across in a foreign language you aren’t really good at isn’t always easy as you can hopefully understand. Please be a bit more forgiving if what I write sounds unprofessional or childish; I’m really trying hard to get my point across as best as possible.

I think we have to agree to disagree here. It’s great that some people seem to like it and I myself really like the daily AP rework overall.

Okay, so again, if someone was “on the fence” as to whether or not they could be kitten d to log in to complete the dailies and it required a free daily reward to convince them of such, why would that free daily reward suddenly make them more likely to check out the gem store?

If that was the only thing that made them make the decision to care enough about the game to log in, then clearly they don’t really care about the game a whole heck of a lot. If the general game is not enough to warrant a login, and the daily achievements were not enough to warrant a login, then I’d say it’s pretty obvious that they don’t care all too much about the game. If someone cares that little about the game, they are highly unlikely to suddenly decide “Hey, y’know what? Now that I’m getting a free daily reward, I should drop some real life money on this game that I, a week ago, couldn’t bring myself to log into.”

Comparing it to other games that do it is not necessarily a fair comparison either as, in my experience, many games that do this (PEMN, YMMV, whatever acronym you like to use as a caveat) give free items that are found in the cash shop. They’re used literally as a bait by saying “Hey, you like this? Well, you can get more of this from this store over here!” But judging from the examples they posted, ascended mats, legendary mats, laurels, tomes of knowledge, etc., those aren’t found in the gem store. You’re not getting a taste of something that you can buy more of. You can’t get more ascended mats or legendary mats from the gem store, so it’s not giving any real more incentive to check out the gem store.

All things considered, the example previously given by someone else about a sub store is not quite accurate. To be more accurate, it’d be like a place where you can get your card stamped simply for opening the door once a day, and you can get a free sub every week, except it’s really a pizza place so no matter how much you like the free subs, you can’t get more of them by spending money there.

I can count on one hand the amount of times I defened the devs on an issue. This is going to be one of them. The patch notes said the new system promises all the rewards of the current one (laurels included) and more.

I am going to take them at face value and just wait and see. If it’s what they say it is, I’ll be pleased.

I will say this though, I really liked dailies and monthlies. they were one of my favorite things in the game.

I want to see this in practice first before I make a judgment. But, quite frankly, the monthly achievements were the same ad naseum: jumping puzzles, champs/vets, dailies completed, missions completed, and either salvaging or crafting.

Did it so much, I got all the twelve jumping puzzles memorized so much so I could do them blindfolded.

Dailies are much the same: rez NPCs, kill bunnies, kill NPCs, do five missions, gather from nodes, salvage ten items, and/or kill vets.

So, to be honest, I won’t be missing the current daily or monthlies once they’re gone, so long as the new achievement requirements are ridiculous.

And if logging in is now rewarded, I’m guessing ANet is going as casual as possible. Which works for me.

Gone to Reddit.

-Anet: “FREE STUFF FOR EVERYONE WITH NO ACTION IN THE GAME REQUIRED!!”
-Players : " OMG REALY ANET!??! WOW SERIOUSLY!? Q_Q -makes treads on forums how horrible the idea is-

how bad does this make the community look?

I find it mind boggling people can complain about getting rewarded for logging in. Its like they are saying “Anet please reward me less and stop trying to get players to log in everyday.”

I don’t think either of you are getting the actual points being made.

In my case, as I will not speak for others, my complaint is how this feels that ArenaNet needs to take lazy, artificial routes to try to boost their playerbase.

I would rather have enjoyable replayability than “give me something for doing nothing” which is what the log-in reward is, a reward for not really doing anything.

The new daily/monthly I see pros and cons (directing players to do things they may not do – a plus – but funnelling players into the same location creates zergs – a con). But I see no reason for the log-in reward.

I’m not saying “reward me less” and I don’t think the others are either.

I’m saying “don’t try to spoonfeed me rewards just to boost your statistics” (or alternatively, “I want to be rewarded for doing something, not nothing.”).

In other words, I would rather have ArenaNet put efforts into improving downscaling, event rewards, balance, and other aspects of the game that feel broken or could use improvement, rather than giving us rewards for logging in, which feels like nothing but an attempt to raise statistics.

This isn’t a bad thing, but it gives a feel of desperation for better statistics to me – and hey, maybe I’m wrong here, who knows – but even so, there really wasn’t all that much need to add this log-in reward system instead of improving other things.

Like say, a certain personal story that got bent over a kittened in the kitten back in September.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

If i get free stuff for being a statistic, then cool.

I agree about the other stuff though, i just dont think it should be one or the other. But, then again, apart from the recent story episodes, im pretty happy with the game right now.

i figured out the perfect solution for all the players that hate/dont like/think its a bad idea with the log in rewards (for whatever reasons)

Since there is no way of avoiding being rewarded when you log in,and you will most likely log in, how about mailing me your daily rewards?

i mean..you obviously hate the idea of getting rewards for simply logging in…it would be a waste if you keep deleting the free rewards you are getting…send them to me!

Hey, ANet. See this crap? This is another area where you need to step up and communicate better. People are unsure on details, and they’re arguing over the WHY of it all.

Get someone in here that knows about this. Get them to answer questions. Get them to explain the reasoning. Sell us on this idea, don’t just assume it’s going to be well received. And yes, listen to concerns about it. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve foreseen impending problems with an update/change, the sooner you can decide how/if you’re going to address them, the better for all of us.

Communicate, ANet. Talking about this after you’ve already announced it doesn’t even violate that ‘stay quiet’ rule you guys have, but if you can’t manage it here, then you’re not going to manage it on anything important and the mess will just continue to grow.

My problem is with the why. Why did Anet spend time on this instead of fixing more pressing issues? My theory is this is the other half to the NPE “solution.” The NPE was to get new players to stick around. These free log-in rewards are to keep old players logging in.

- Skinner box and metrics. Have you ever been to a casino? This is a platform in which you’re supposed to make microtransactions and fund the engine that gives you more and more of carrot in a stick. Call it “loyalty program” for being a good guinea pig.

What kind of rewards excite you the most? Anet tweaked them a bit, so PvP players now get reward track progress and WvW players get their World XP track. Apparently unmotivating rewards were a big problem that caused the players to drop the game. It’s alright if you don’t want to play either, just log in to claim your reward and Anet can have it added to the statistics. And who could complain about free stuff in this brave new world?

A question about the new system:
Are the dailies different for different people or are they the same to the entire player base?
I ask because, at least in the screenshot example, 2 of the 4 PvE dailies would be impossible to do on a low-level character.
I think it would be nice if there was some kind of tailoring of the daily to the logged-in character, for example, asking a level 50 character to kill world bosses that will happen on the next half hour and the player has the waypoint too. Otherwise, the system will become too geared towards endgamers with world complete and 8 professions on the account.
Other than that I have no qualms with the new system, now dailies have a lot more meaning, and log in rewards replace monthlies with an objective just as meaningful as monthlies were.

So,

Week1-4, days 1-4 are mystic coins, laural, essence if luck, armor piece(?), day 6 experience book.
Week 1-2, day 5 crafting supplies
Week 1 and 3, day 7 laurals.
Week 2 day 7 armor (?)
Week 3 day 5 booster (?)
Week 4 day 5 transmutation charge.
Week 4 day 7 ascended mats (?)

I’m not gonna speculate on the chest and with armor, I’m just more concerned about the coins and laurals.

1. How many laurals given out on log in days, and the end of the two different weeks, at the end of the 28 days in a chest?
2. How many coins?
3. The ascended mats, will it contain stuff like Bolts of damask, the steel bars, etc, or dragonite, bloodstone….(which we have TONES of now). Or the threads and mithril, or globs?
4. One of the many things holding back legendary crafting are the t6 mats. Does the 28 day chest give more or less what the current 28 day laurals give?
5. Can we get examples of what someone in pve gets from a daily reward?
6. The crafting material chests, do they contain 1-6 at any level, or scale to your level? Do they match profession or any profession?
7. The chest of legendary crafting mats, chance for a precursor in this chest? Also, if we keep picking this because you need more of the t6 mats than clovers, won’t this become more of a pain to choose when we are swimming in 250+ clovers?

I know, its a lot, and probably repeated questions from this thread, but I’m hoping we can get a BIT more information

Daily Reward Changes: Love the dailies idea to add variety. This is going to be awesome!

Monthly Rewards: Log-in rewards? Seriously?!? For people who don’t have more than a few days a week to play, and like to crank out the monthlies through some focused efforts, this is really going to put them at a disadvantage just because they don’t log in as often.

Better idea? More variety to the existing monthly system or coming up with something that is done “in-game” to get the reward for those who are dedicated players, but who aren’t able to log in as frequently.

When I first heard about this, I was pretty upset. But reading the announcement, it seems to be designed pretty fairly.

On the skeevy-moves scale, this ranks below flash sales and singple-player-always-online-DRM. Yes, the just-log-in achieves are a transparent attempt to increase login numbers. It’s sad games do this kind of thing. But if it’s going to be included, ANet is including it right, without wiping your progress.

The big issue I still have is the content-specific nature of the new dailies. I love that the current dailies can be done in basically every map. The drive to force players into specific maps or specific content makes no sense to me. It’s entirely antithetical to GGW2’s play-your-way ethos. I’m extremely unhappy about that aspect of this rewrite.

Neat.

I’m glad to see we can still get features between feature packs.

But many may not consider it a ‘feature’ or ‘neat’.
Again, another unsolicited change while other fixes are still needed.

Unfortunately this seems to be the typical operation of Anet in this regard. “Fix” or “improve” something that isn’t broken, when other items actually are and DO need attention, and end up screwing up more things that will need to be fixed in the future. To me, and time will tell if this is the case or not, it seems like this is another possible attempt to “encourage” (read force) players into parts of the game that they may have no interest in. And by attempting to force the issue, may end up driving away more players.

Eh, I’m a little on the fence about this. For my playstyle personally, it sounds like more of a downgrade, but I guess we’ll see soon enough.

I like having a wide variety of achievements I’m likely to actually complete just by playing the game normally.

(some cut)

I’m assuming each daily advent calendar loot bag will contain 1 laurel, 1 mystic coin, and something else depending on the container type. Meaning the bonus 10 laurels we used to get for our monthly will likely be an option in the final reward chest, forcing us to make a tough choice between laurels, tomes, or materials.

I love Tomes of Knowledge, but I don’t know if I wanna sacrifice the 10 laurels I used to get for them. Would be nice to receive what we’re accustomed to getting for our monthly, in addition to something else, instead of OR something else. I’ll be thinking long and hard at the end of every month about whether I want laurels or tomes, laurels or tomes.

This seems to be typical Anet. “Add more stuff” by taking away even more than they are supposedly adding. Their previous “encouragement” to try other parts of the game by removing a ton (or kitten ton if you prefer the more appropriate term) of achievements instead of just capping how many you could get achievements from was, to me, a way to force players into other parts of the game that many, me included, have no interest at all in trying.

The “new player” improvements in the starter maps, including the new and kittened up leveling rewards, total kitten storm. The blatant attempted money grab by totally kittening up the gem/gold exchange into 400 gem block purchase, same thing. Some of the improvements were actually improvements, but the single gem purchase needs to be the default, NOT total hassle to get to like how it is now. Unless it is their not so subtle intent to make it such a hassle that people will not bother. All it does for me is “encourage” me to not bother spending real world money on gems until they stop kittening everything up, and fix what they kittened up this bad so far.

“I don’t want to have to do all the dailies to get max AP from them”

Anet: Ok, we’re going to make it a flat 10 AP. You need only do 3. And we’re going to start giving you related rewards for doing them, so if you do more than 3 you feel like it was worthwhile

“Omg no! This is a slap in the face”

They can’t win. For crying out loud.

Actually, the slap in the face is from not fixing actually broken stuff, that has been brought up time and time again, and instead kittening around with all these bells and whistles that are borderline pointless (like the inventory highlight, really?).

I wonder if I can give bags of experience to an alt, such as my key runner. if they give a level and are able to be held in my bank till I want them, that will be very useful to me.

Seen this thread coming a mile away. How many weeks did the ap farmers whine and snivel about how much time it took. How unfair it was to them. Anet changed the ap system just for them. And made it much easier for them Now they are making it even easier for the general po population. Now they are mad again. go figure

I consider myself somewhat of an ap farmer, but I still refuse to dive into PvP at all and very little of the WvW daily achievement items I do at all, mostly just the one capping path guards. To me, the first bad idea was removing alot of the daily achievement possibilities. Not the points you got from them, they could have just limited those to X points per day, but taking away the options of what you wanted to do. To me, if this is more of Anet trying to force ppl into other parts of the game that they had no interest in before, and even less now, then I will lose even more respect for them than I have with almost every “improvement” they add.

Again another feature/change nobody had asked for….

Really? Because it seems to me that a lot of people asked for it…

Nah this is sweet. Don’t take it so seriously, it’s not like they’re showering people in gems or precursors to log in, it’s just another little QoL that provides incentive to play. Alot of games have adopted this segment of modeling, it really doesn’t boost log in rates as much as you may think. People aren’t so quick to change their life for some material or karma.
On the topic of rewards for actually participating in things, come on, let’s get serious. People who afk bosses get better rewards than people on the front lines of a 50 FotM. Log in rewards are pretty insignificant if you want to start debating input for output.

All in all, my opinion is it’s a net plus.

If it was just adding stuff, I would normally agree, but they seem to take out more than they add with almost every “improvement” they make.

I gave up counting on another equally well received subject, the wardrobe/transmute/town clothes fiasco. 18 or so pages at the time I counted and not 1 post from someone from Anet, yet another subject, I don’t remember exactly what now, 4 pages and almost every page had multiple posts from someone from Anet. They seem to have blinders on in regards to certain things.

I would guess the actual argument is “I enjoy my 1.5 hours of daily-hunting.”

To which ANet says “You’re spending too much time hunting dailies and not playing the game.”

To which I respond with the same sarcastic comment when I see this attitude shown by players in map chat.

“How dare people play the game how they want to, and not how someone else thinks they should!”

I like this change, because now I can continue to ignore the WvW and PvP dailies like I did before, but then again, I didn’t really care about getting the max every single day, just completing the daily. Now if they want they can eliminate the max cap on the dailies, I did the calculation and it would only have taken someone 833+ days(2.2+ years) to reach the total daily max, at which point you would no longer have incentive to do them.

Remember though when dailies where first in game they used to give 5 AP’s per each completed one, not 1AP,

Also it never took me 4-6 hours to do them, even in the very early days it would only take you 45mins to an hour,

They where capped hard because the ultra casuals could not keep up with the players who play daily, so the players who play daily got the beat down, and ever since Anet has been playing and changing the game for the ultra casuals, everyone else go home.

They need a DYNAMIC cap, if they don’t, when I hit the Daily cap for AP, ill just leave and go play elsewhere, but each to there own, AP is not a sign of skill, but some of us use it for fun between friends, stop the fun, stop playing.

What?!? I didn’t care about the dailies when they first had them, didn’t bother to complete them and not because it took forever. I might log in every day and play the game during all my free time(when not sleeping, eating or working), but I still consider myself a casual player…I don’t rush to do anything. I took a break during LS1 because I didn’t like the story and I had something else I was doing, and it wasn’t even another game(though some people like to think Second Life is an MMO/game, it’s not even close). I cam back during summer this year, because I find this fun and it kills time. My personal opinion, eliminate the cap on the Daily AP entirely, real casuals don’t care about AP so they don’t really care if someone else has 20k AP to their 2k. If the only thing that keeps you playing is doing daily tasks to gain achievements, then I’m afraid this game isn’t for you…fun is what you make it to be.

Is this update a opportunity to let us reselect AP items? Or could the new system support the idea that was tossed around of letting us select the armor pieces we want in a order we’d like? Just like the weapons.

As a casual player I’ll probably never get a hold of those leggings in the games life span for me personally. I hold out hope for this idea on reevaluating the AP system stuff.

This change will not be for the better, for me, in my opinion. I have logged in daily and usually do many of the dailies and get my reward for it and the same for the monthlies. So I am glad there will be a “reward” for this in the future; but I think this change will reward less in the long run.
Especially not looking forward to having to do a specific World boss; or a specific JP for a daily. First there is the getting there and then there are many bugged events; mass quantities of people there for the event, disconnects, wasted time, JP’s I can’t do; etc
I expect the new daily achievements to look a lot like the “more fun” (not) revamped Trait system with all it’s flaws. Does Anet track/have metrics for how many or how few have completed the new traits?
tl/dr this will be a nerf to rewards I now get from Dailies/Monthlies. The folks who are in the know are already buying up mystic coins….
