Came here to say exactly this, along with player housing!
The thing I’ve missed most, in every MMO since Star Wars Galaxies, is the non-combat classes. The Dancer, Musician, Tailor, Image Designer, Merchant – all of these added something huge to the community, they were ways to draw people into cities, to fuel the player controlled economy, they provided important buffs and services you could get nowhere else in the game. The nice thing in SWG, too, was that the point buy system meant you could be a master dancer and then still go out and hunt bounties when you wanted.
Since then I have been longing for a game that offered this sort of thing again. You could still have your primary combat class, but then let people choose to do these things – maybe as an alternative to crafting. (though Tailor was a crafting class it’s scope was huge).
I still remember going to concerts in game with choreographed bands dancing and playing music while their R2 droids where firing off special effects. It was beautiful and these groups made loads of credits doing just this sort of thing as their main in game focus.
Not only that but these classes complimented many of the more active fighting classes, too. Rangers would go and catch animals for crafting materials; they could also make (and sell) camps where Dancers or Musicians could use their buff powers in the field, etc.
GW2 has a decent community, but you want to see a community really come to life, add options like these.
Sent in an application!
Hey Gaile, I came across this earlier, and it made my night, hahahaha
Whaaaat thats awesome! I wonder why they chose you? :P
yes, i definitely would like this for whispers, and i suppose too for party chat although i don’t care as much about that.
At least 2 good things have come out of my addiction, yes addiction, to gw 1 and 2. I quit smoking and drastically cut down on my drinking. From bar tabs $100-200 every Friday and Saturday night and 1-2 packs per day…I figure it has saved me roughly $16-17,000 a year for the past 4 years. 64 thousand dollars not too shabby!
That’s awesome! Congrats!!! As to everyone else judging…im sure you all spent countless hours doing other things, watching TV, etc, it’s all about what you find fun, so don’t judge.
you know, i actually agree! haha
I sense satire, and i approve :P
Whilst I’m fine that some people like housing and guild halls, personally any dev time that isn’t spent on improving combat-based content is a waste to me.
Just to provide the lone voice of dissent here in the thread :P
You disagree? GRAB YOUR TORCH AND PITCHFORK! GET ’IM!!!
[/angrymobmode]On topic: all devs working on one thing alone? That is a logistical nightmare. While I’m no expert at game development, I can’t imagine 100* people working on 1 project ever getting anywhere.
- this is a random number
RAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEE
lol, joking aside, i would never expect them to, or want them to, devote all their resources to housing! That would create chaos!
I certainly hope they’re being worked on.
I swear, almost every time I mention the importance of guild halls in Guild Wars someone tries to explain the lore behind it, when I’ve already played GW1 and read both books >.< Regardless of the lore, GW1 was very guild-centric… GW2 hasn’t really been so far
You should put this in the AMA thread! ^^
Yea, as seen above, i hate when people try to pull out that card… -.-
Also, for modern day mmos, i think rift has set the bar for housing at this point, depite all the other terrible things about that game xD
Guild homes could add alot of fun game play for all levels! Imagine:
—craftable decorations
—guild achievment points which could be spent on special items for the guild hall.
—new loot to hunt for
—trophies to place and a fun way to get them.
—a guild hall function to “war” with another guild hall at a set date and time.
—the social part of the game would be greatly increased.Theres endless amount of new game play which could be added by having guild halls, if only they would do it!
Yea, i think the social element is the part id like the most….well, probably tied with being able to decorate it.
Guild Halls I am waiting for………but am I the only who has always found houses in any game to be insanely boring and pointless?
More or less, yea… xD
From a roleplayer’s point of view, we want guild housing/player housing very very badly. In the meantime we have to basically take over taverns that are scattered throughout the world, but there are only so many to go around. Not only that, but they don’t allow for any privacy.
For a large chunk of the population, they likely don’t care…but I always feel that the more customization and options given to the players, the better. If you don’t think non-RPers have any use for these things, do some searches for EQ2’s housing, SWG’s old housing, or even LotRO’s housing. All of them are(were) widely used. In the case of EQ2 and SWG, housing was a strong way to experiment, show off, and waste away spare time to make the most creative settings you could. In SWG, players build fully-scaled X-Wings in their guild halls with nothing but items.
Think about that. Every item in the game could be put anywhere in a house you wanted. Every little item could be used to deck out your house. Want to show off armor and weapons? Feel free! You could put them on the walls, make your own mannequins/displays, or create exhibits. It was like having minecraft in your house.
Things like that appeal to a large populace(once again, just look at the success of minecraft). Some folks(like myself) look for customization to our characters and houses as a primary reason to play these games over single-player options.
THIS exactly. I played SWG for about 5 years…out of all of the features, this is probably what i miss the most!
wtf? Go sit in the corner Rustypipes.
Anyways, Guild Halls are something I defiantly miss from GW1 and was looking forward to seeing what customization options they were going to throw in… unfortunately they don’t exist yet.
They are going to add them eventually, according to the official wiki.
I lol’d, My thoughts exactly about rusty… xD musta gotten some early coal for christmas or something…
Putting that aside, i read that too, so i hope it’s true! Im just as excited!
So many people are clueless about the name of this game. It’s not named Guild Wars because of player driven guilds, it’s named Guild Wars because of lore. Go read it, educate yourself.
As for your comment about guild halls and player housing being an important aspect of any MMO, WoW says hi.
Oh trust me, I have read tons and tons of the lore, and most all of the books. I know very well where the name comes from (the three original warring guilds/human kingdoms, of Ascalon, Kryta, and Orr). So next time, don’t jump to conclusions.
And let me rephrase that then, guild halls and player housing are an important aspect of any quality MMO.
IMHO, WoW is just a massive time sink and a waste of money. There is no fun in it, for me, whatsoever.
Some of these threads have me worried…after all, guild halls/housing really are an important aspect of any mmo, not to mention GUILD Wars….let’s just hope the links are wrong!
Merry Christmas!

First, I cute a hole in the box..
Win.
But yea, i would like housing very very soon, and NOT just in our home instances, that would be terrible!
See my two super long threads about housing…both of which Anet freaking shut down for no reason what so ever…
lol, of course, I really should have logged in before asking this…I knew the Anet devs would come up with something creative
Somewhat of a lore question, but mainly about Wintersday…
Does Lion’s Arch have the seasonal climate that would include a winter? It seems to me to be more of a tropical climate!
lol…people are just doing fractals for the time being, things will move back out eventually. Never gonna happen when ALL of the servers are usually always at Full or Very High
My only reservation about housing is that it is a lot of work on Anets part to incorporate housing into a game that they never had the intention of doing it in.
They planned housing like a few years ago.
Yes, kitteno is right, housing has been planned since the early stages of development, it just wasn’t finished by release, so it is going to be added after.
Housing should be limited to Guild halls. This way more players are inclined to join a guild, which will increase the social aspect.
In terms of housing benefits, I have seen Runes of Magic do a very good job at this, different furniture will benefit with different buffs. Lets say that if you log out in your house that has a shrine and a tree and log in 24 hours later, you have a 50% exp buff and 10% MF for 1hr.
Disagree massively, many, maaany people want their own housing. Would be better for Anet too in terms of money. But I do still definitely want guild halls, in addition to our own houses.
And don’t worry kitteno, it’s back
i wont let it die haha
Housing! See sig haha
They could take housing to a whole new level in GW2. Show the whole MMO world just how much better it is. If they provided us with the right tools you know some clever talented people would run with it and make things that would blow folks minds.
Look at the game out there that would have died if not for player created content. With a feature like this they could very well have player made dungeons (subject to Anets testing) etc. The possibilities are endless if the tool are there.
Do i think it would happen? No
But dont stop a man dreaming
Yea, agreed. If they really apply themselves, they have the potential to do great things! I’m slightly skeptical at the moment…but we’ll see!
Non- instanced houses with today’s beautiful graphics would be a monumental improvement in the whole online gaming world!
And don’t forget developers could also make a game with the best crafting, or at least some fun, meaningful old school crafting.
I agree! I just don’t know if there would be a feasible way to do it… :/ Unless they did an entire zone to it.
It seems that the old Housing thread in this forum got too long apparently, and was closed, despite the excellent discussion. No reason was given, either.
Link to previous: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Housing/first
So I figured i’d start another to continue discussion
Some highlights from the other
*Fully customizable interiors
*Guild towns/neighborhoods
*Guild halls and customization within them
*Town invasions
*Instanced vs open world
My top feature right now is definitely the ability to fully customize the interior.
Your thoughts?
Discuss away!
Well, housing seems to be an issue of great emotions.
But I think you don’t have to fear a million houses on each server. Even if there are many players that like housing, a lot of players won’t care. And not every player needs one house for each of his characters.
And couldn’t be different likes and dislikes be also a chance? I could imagine that the game offer
- instanced housing regions around guild halls,
- other instanced housing regions (or maybe even single house instances somewhere scattered througout the map),
- and a limited number of appartments or small houses in the towns.
And then it’s up to the player to choose: in the town, he can’t influence the size and floorplan of his house, but he has a house fitting perfectly into the fictive world. In the area next to his guild hall, he can decide much more about his house (and garden, something not offered in the towns), maybe even enlarge it lateron. And those who could only imagine a character living somewhere alone… well, they migth even choose only a hollow in a hedge or a liar as their home. (They probably won’t buy lots of furniture for that, I guess…) And it will perfectly fit their need if noone else ever will see that, except a dedicated group member, so everyone else doesn’t need to bother about “inappropriate” – it will be an instance hidden for everyone except the owner and his group. In the German forum there was the proposal of an island as guild instance. I think that wasn’t discussed here until now? It could start with an half-ruined fort, a scruffy village and a lot of feral space. Then the guild can start to upgrade the island bit by bit: strengthen the walls and doors (like in WvW), build and decorate a festival hall, “buy” vendors and crafting workshops, start a tavern as place for banquets and character-weddings, install an armory, define pieces of the island as building places for character houses, buy an asura waypoint, … You could even think about a derelicted mine as a small dungeon.
I for myself would really like the possibility to have an area for all miniature pets you own (much more lovable then only to store them in the bank), and the possibility to set up a familiy (spouse and children) or, if the house is big enough, even a household with domestics. And, if allowed, a garden to plant cooking ingredients…
Hmm, that is a really interesting idea…i would think it’d be a lot of fun for people in guilds, although they should have regular housing as well, for the people not in guilds.
As long as you don’t start putting vendors, banks and other stuff to get people away from the cities, it would be great…
Maybe some of these have already been suggested but still this are my thoughts.
- A wardrobe to keep your armor skins.
- A small vault (maybe the size of 1 bank tab would be ok).
- Something to change your hair also could be fine, like a mirror.
- A little garden or orchard where to grow a couple of plants.
- A trophy room, some trophys could be placed by the player, others earned immediatly on achievement.
- A way to rest when you’re offline, maybe a buff, not a big thing, maybe some magic find like 5% or so for a couple of hours or something not even combat related…
- The choice of having one big house for all your characters or smaller individual ones, or the possibility to expand it to house more chars.
- A basement, to keep kidnapped npcs xD
But can you imagine how awesome it’d be to set up your very own store with vendors and all…add in a trading/crafting profession and you’re golden. This was perfect in SWG. And, the cities were still quite populated.
Bump please.
Being a former Animal Crossing fanatic, this idea absolutely appeals to me. I could literally spend ages decorating my pad and shuffling around furniture (I had the Lovely set). These are perfect gem store items that I would definitely want for my character. Preferably you would have instanced communities to give a feeling of realness, and the ability to invite players to your pad.My suggestion is to implement instanced versions of the home area for each race (Imagine being able to access those far up-areas in Divinity’s Reach and looking out across the city, or having a leaf styled house inside the Grove), alternatively a brand new housing area.
You could also implement achievements for the system if you wanted as well (Bake 3 cookies for your neighbor and get 5 silver). If implemented well I don’t see why this could not become a great success.
Woo 200 replies!
But yes i agree, I put soooooooo much time into my past houses.
We’re discussing both there.

For housing, you should get the ability to live in what zone you want, since most zones are different from each other or in other words, themed housing.
To enter your house, you use an asura portal.
Let say that I want to live in Malchor’s leap. The environment will be very similar to Malchor’s leap and I get a plot of land to customize my house anyway I want to.
If I want to live in Metrica, I get to have a tropical area as my instanced housing. But I still have to build my house.
If I want to live in Wayfarer Foothills, maybe I can get that four epic statues of the spirit of the wild in the far horizon. This way, it feels like you are living in Wayfarer foothills instead of some cold mountains.
In Strait of Devastation, I can live on an island but there would be airship flying around battling the Lieutenants of Zhaitan.
I would also like to live in dungeons themed housing too. CoE, AC, and Arah seems wonderful places to live if you get rid of the mobs. HoTW doesn’t seem bad either, I could go for CM as well.
This way, as a RPer, I could say that I live in Dredgehaunt cliffs instead of some area in the mist.
Yes, this is exactly what i would like as well. I dont want to be forced into an area, i want to be able to pick wherever.
We’re doing pretty good on Blackgate…
Check the thread in my signature, theres a long discussion there going on about Guild Halls and player housing!
Snow, christmas trees, and other decor. Not in LA though, wouldnt make sense climate wise to have a bunch of snow randomly in a more tropical, coastal area. Decorate the Norn homeland, or Divinity’s Reach and the surrounding zones in snow (with weather as well.)
Hope there will be an underwater housing option too..
Same, this would be really cool…
Although some people might be battling this in real life right now with Sandy…
Before the massive server crash, i logged in and could launch the game fine, but after the server crash, i can only log into the client, but when i click play, it crashes on me. Can’t get past that. I’m running Windows 8, if that has anything to do with it (which it shouldn’t, but still. )
Any ideas? Hope i don’t have to re-install the whole thing… -.-

Aeson Thackery,
Yeah, check my sign. I’ve been doing Anet’s job for about a month now. xD Bought ready just to delete my account because Anet is not the Anet I used to know. They are a Blizzard now. Thanks for the compliment though.
Eh idk about that, i think they’re doing an amazing job from a PR standpoint. It is unfair to knock them about game elements in GW2, as one that’s always personal opinion, and two GW2 is vastly different than GW1, so obviously a different approach must be taken.
I would love to see more non-combat stuff as well, that has long been one of my favorite aspects of MMOs!
Here are my ideas for items/pricing:
List of some things that can fit into each category:
Small:
- Beds, all books(have separate prices), cabinets, clocks, all dishware(have separate prices), fences, fountains, garden gnomes, plants, stone steps, wall mount, windows.

Pretty much everything you buy, you will one get 1 of that item per each payment.
- Exceptions to this would be:
-Fences. You unlock that style of fence, but it has an unlimited supply.
-Stone steps.Bringing a dye bottle to a vendor, should unlock that color pain for your house, but NOT consume the dye. For example: I find a dye I really like, I bring it to the vendor, he unlocks it… Now I can consume it whichever character I’d like.

- So I mean, MAXING your house would cost a lot. But a pretty awesome house is still totally attainable with these prices.
My justifications:
1. I do not play much at I still have earned 4g after release.
2. Seems like a few people have Commanders books… Those are 100g a pop.
3. Houses are not supposed to be maxed instantly. They grow over time.
4. In all honestly, not everyone is going to want a Legendary house.
5. For someone that simply plays the game for fun, can easily accumulate enough wealth to progressively fill their house. For a moderate, completely filled house, with a Legendary or two, it should only run you about 100g. Which should easily be obtainable if you plan to play Guild Wars for a decent duration. (That’s what the developers want anyways.)
The idea is not to buy everything. The idea is to represent yourself. And you can do that without having to buy everything ever. People like myself do not like outrageous houses. We like it clean, quite, and maybe a few Legendary Statues next to our huge kitten pool…
I think I made a typo and numbers maybe be like, 10g off. But this is just a general idea.
- Although I would like to see the house items sold via gems, I would also like to see the house items be regulated at a set coin price… I do not want to see my pool cost 2x the price overnight.
If you have any arguments against these pricings, please do make them.
Well kitten dude, Anet doesn’t even have to do anything now, you did all the work for them! :P Great ideas!
Naoko.7096:
If everything is spoonfed, there’s no fun in it. People will get bored fast and lead to another “no end-game disaster”. A good mmo should have some content that will constantly appeal players to log into the game.
This game already spoon feeds you everything. It is only alive because people have no had time to exploit its few values
Being forced to make furniture every week would put quite a burden on the developers. As for mandatory: If you tell many people they “must” you guild will be empty in no time. If your Guild is good, I will donate on my own.
Cosmetics is the great all be-all end game solution. It worked perfectly for Guild Wars 1. Problem now, is we have nearly nothing from Guild Wars 1 inside of 2, and the game is very restricting. Limited. Bland.
The only was to make end game not be cosmetic, is to add grind or progression of some kind.
Compared to games like WoW or SWTOR, this game HARDLY spoon feeds you anything. The main idea Anet encourages is exploration and finding stuff on your own, such as quests, vistas, crafting mats, etc. You have to explore in this game to find all that, where as in WoW/SWTOR/etc, it tells you exactly where to go, gives you the quest, puts a nice little waypoint on your map for you, etc etc. Then when you’re done, you return to the quest giver, go points you to the next quest giver/gives you the next quest, and the cycle continues. No exploration or discovery there my friend, all spoon fed.
So in contrast to those games….GW2 is hardly a game that spoon feeds you!
I am not going to read through 3 pages of this, but on the first page of the topic neighbourhoods were mentioned. Well we know guildhalls are coming, why not turn these into guild neighbourhoods?
They can be instanced to the guild and you can invite others in of course, and all of the neighbourhoods can have the same entrance to avoid clutter, or 5 entrances I guess, probably one in each City/Starter Area.
This way each guild member can show their own flair while still giving the safe haven and enclosed space that a guild hall entails.
Thoughts?
Yes, although this has been mentioned a couple times in the previous two pages, haha. But that means it’s a good, well supported idea if multiple people mention it!
Player housing is definitely an awesome idea. I really can’t wait for Guild Halls though, I actually can’t believe Guild Wars 2 launched without them XD
Well you do know the lore behind the title right….cause if you did you would know that the Guilds in “Guild Wars” actually has nothing to do with the guilds that we know of and are thinking of.
I do realise that, I know quite a bit of Guild Wars lore and have read both books…
All I was referencing is that guilds have an important role within the universe, GW1 had Guild Halls- yet GW2 doesn’t yet.
Well, it has been confirmed that theyre definitely coming…patience my friend, patience.

Both Guild Halls and player housing will be implemented in the same expansion, there is no point in choosing one over another.

Wow….if they implemented something like that, i would just die of happiness…
What music are you listening to while you're playing GW2?

Posted by: Aeson Thackery.5927
I listen to the game…? o.0
Muting the game sound is like walking around deaf…youre missing a bunch of stuff…
You already had a thread about this, why did you make another?
Edit: Also, my opinion of this is still the same: an absolute no. Such a drastic overhaul is unnecessary and detrimental to the game, as what we currently have is great.
That said, I have nothing against a simple toggle for those who would rather see colours instead of levels. This would forego the rest of the proposed suggestions.
Exactly this, 1. it’d be a toooon of work for 2. a completely inferior system when 3. the devs have already put in so much work for a system that works great.
