Hey guys how are you doing.
Ok so like – i started playing guild wars 2 after a 5 month break. I used to use soldier’s ammulet with hammer and dominate.
I think nerfs, and spvp changes really caught me by surprise.
I know that conditions are still awesome so far, i have to find a good build for conditions with engineer.
Um…it seems scrapper build got nerfed pretty hard in pvp. I can own in unranked, but not in ranked.
Since i came so late, i believe i am unable to raise up in the ranks because the season is almost over.
Oh yea, engineer is a pretty strong class, just doesn’t have much team support (in my opinion) but so far i just joined a guild and doing wvw. I like scrapper for wvw as a tanky support stun bot with decent burst damage. Um…. If i play spvp again, i’ll probably do a rifle toolkit burst build. OR a flame thrower pistol burn burst build.
Any ways sorry for my ranting on my last post. I was tired and it was 7 am in the morning.
Thanks for all the useful tips, and i will keep practicing. Thanks
So i been trying to master engineer in spvp.
I follow meta battle’s advice and they have decent builds. I do a mix of solo q and q with my guild.
I feel very useless in spvp. I die too fast, and cannot get my combos or “rotations” to ever work because i am always the first to be targeted,.
I tried scrapper and grenades and rifle and flame thrower. It seems that i can do decent burst but nothing compared to others classes. Also i feel like i cant ever spec pure damage or pure tanky ..but have to go a mixture. I also feel most of my skills are useless in spvp.
LIke my elixirs are useful in a might stacking build, while my gadgets do no damage and offer very little utility.
My kits offer the best it seems in options, but it seems from a utility stand point. I Can try a condition build but people survive my conditional burst. Also my cc is useless because most people seem immune to my cc due to stability.
Also as an engineer i find my self unable to solo an enemy player 1v1 in spvp unless they are unskilled or not aggressive.
I know turrets are useless. I also know that elixirs can be useful in a might stacking build, but it doesn’t offer much damage or usefulness. I feel like my utility abilities are useless compared to other professions.
in WvW pvp i can become a real powerful tank, and help my allies with stuns healing and damage. I don’t know how or why the scaling doesn’t translate well to spvp. Maybe the other wvw players are undergeared or under leveled.
Lastly i just want to say that i know what other classes abilities are….but i feel like i cannot escape the “hybrid” build that engineer has. My traits are both offense and defensive and some utility.
My Skills (utility) feel very useless. They seem to be weak or have no game breaking effect in spvp.
Maybe i am doing something wrong or just a bad. I have a razor naga and know how to react. But i feel like if i could spec pure damage or pure tank i could do good in spvp.
By pure damage i mean heavy burn condition, heavy ranged berserker cannon, or some way to out pressure other professions.
By defense, i wish i could survive all the pressure the enemy puts on me. Or at least, be able to tank while the enemy dies to my allies pressure.
Any ways this is just my engineer experience so far with spvp.
Disconnection Issues: Weekend of June 24, 2016 [merged]

Hello. I am having some disconnections (crashes) almost 1 disconnect per day.
My schedule is from 2 pm evening (central / texas) to 9 in the morning am / central texas.
I play all night long, and every day for the last 5 days. Almost every day i disconnected 1 time.
I am using AT&T wireless internet. I disconnect about 4 hours into the game..sometimes 6 or 8 hours…but mostly at random times and it happens only 1 time a day.
My computer specs are the following -
Windows 10 Home Edition.
Processor – Intel Core i3-4160 CPU @ 3.60 GHz
8gb Ram
64 bit operating system 64x-based processor
Graphics card = Intel HD Intergrated graphics card 4400
Game settings – medium everything.
AT&T wireless high speed internet.
Playing guild wars 2 while steam is active in the background (on idle statues).
NOTE – When guild wars 2 crashes. It says ( Guild wars 2 has stopped working, windows is attempting to find a solution to this problem) and i never get a bug splat report or a window that lets me send bug reports.
Any help would be helpful thanks.
If you want to make a kitless spec, put a heavy coldown (like 8 seconds) so when you swap into a kit, all other kits would be on an 8 second coldown.
Now why would you want to do that ?
Well if you are limited to a single kit in combat or unable to chain spells and have options, than the kits (all of them) would need to be buffed or remade.
I think having a weapon swap would just make engineer more powerful – imagine hammer rifle that is crazy burst stun locking potential haha.
I think that engineer should be moved away from kits, and maybe promoted to stay in a single kit for longer periods of time rather than kit dancing to do a 25 button rotation, and having 2-3 cc 1-2 boon buffs – and a couple of finishers and fields.
But that is just my opinion. I say no to weapon swap.
Here is my issue not just with scrapper but with general engineer as well.
Scrapper traits are decent . I use scrapper traits with marauder amulet offensive rune and sigils, and stack all defense traits. It balances out to a semi tanky extreme pressure melee dps.
Hammer deals way to much damage. My autos hit for like 1.5 to 2.5 k a hit and my 2 3 4 5 buttons all do anywhere from 2-10k damage depends on crits and if they land.
If you look at the tool tip i think the average damatge is 4.5k or 2.5k x 5
I won’t lie, i love playing hammer because i get killing blows – like a warrior hammer greatsword stance kind of pressure. But it is the only build worth using in structured pvp.
And in pvp i never rez other people. Why should i rez other people when i can do damage and put pressure ? I use scrapper traits for defensive to cover my offensive stacking of runes sigils and amulet. Scrapper trait line is not that good in pve or raiding. It doesn’t reduce the massive damage you take in raiding. Better to dodge or avoid damage all together rather than reduce damage.
and in PvE hammer is a fail concept as raid tank. I don’t think hammer can do enough damage to maguam jungle monsters and survive. Condition pistols are better for soloig, leveling, raiding. Hell any offensive build is better than a defensive build in PvE – soloing, being an engineer raider, farming and grinding.
As for classic engineer. Tool kit used to be good prior to the expansion, but hammer is better in almost every possible way. Tool kit needs a remake or incredible buffs to be even considered being used in pvp pve. Hammer is not just a defensive weapon – it is a Defensive and Offensive burst pressure weapon. Toolkit is hard to hit with a tiny melee hit range, and while it has some decent skills (magnet is pretty cool and shield is basically immortality for a few seconds) ultimately it’s not that great. Tools is not that great.
Bomb and grenade kit has it’s place. I use it as “part of a rotation” not as stand alone kits. I use pistols and swap to grenades and use 2 and 5 (bleed and poison) and then swap to bomb use 2 (fire field) and out of it, until those skills coldowns are up.
Same with morter kit. I only use morter kit for the poison field and never anything else.
I cannot image making a power build with grenades or bomb kit. Seems like it doesn’t do enough damage, clunky aim, and doesn’t offer any useful utility. Bomb kit could be decent in pvp, but i think it is still not as awesome as hammer.
Elixirs….elixirs i don’t like. They take up a slot to be use as a “reactive” ability and you save it until you use it in reaction to something – cleansing conditions – rezzing allies – buffing your self for damage – going invincible for a few seconds to absorb fatal attacks.
I think elixirs are like defensive and offensive coldowns. Just like World of warcraft.
WORLD OF WARCRAFT – You get 25 spells on 3 hot bars. You get 5-7 attack rotation spells, 2-3 defensive coldown spells – 1-2 offensive coldowns – 1-2 buff spells – 1-3 Utility spells – 1-3 class abilties (totems, pet training skills, stealth stealing spells, rage mechanics skills)
Why am i talking about world of warcraft ? Well the engineer has only 3 slots for spells 1 healing slot and 1 ultimate slot.
Elixirs are like Heavy coldown abilities. If you have the elixir spells in addition to 1 healing slot skill 3 utility slot skills and 1 ultimate slot skill, you would be incredibly powerful.
World of waracrt balances their classes by giving every class the same tools – some defensive and offensive coldowns, some utility coldowns, some attack rotation abilities, class abilities, and other buttons for profession, teleporting, summon toys pets, and stuff.
Engineer elixirs are NEVER worth slotting in your utility slots. Even if you go HGH you still are useless when you pop your elixirs or try to counter every build and you get boon ripped, as well as having no cc damage or healing. You lose a lot to have elixirs slotted instead of kits.
The engineer has a lot of good skills that would be awesome for a game where you had all your skills. But the way guild wars 2 is designed, that makes it hard to balance engineer. You can only slot 3 skills 1 healing skill and 1 ultimate skill. Because the meta gaming and min maxing, you will usually slot kits and maybe that shrink invisible elixir as a defensive coldown.
In guild wars 2 the limited number of active skills you can use, make engineer very weak. If he could spam turrets and elixirs and gadgets and use all his kits and spells in 1 package in combat – engineer would be crazy good.
Why slot kits ? Because slotting kits gives you more attack options, more crowd control, more utility, more options. Each kit has 1-3 attack abilities, as well as a cc conditioning attack, healing or slow (elixir gun tools) and overall it’s just more powerful to have kits as your slots and have options to be strong for many counters.
If you need more extra support, buy a razor naga mouse, it gives you very much powerful control of your kits and abilities.
I am not angry, salty, upset, or mad, i am ranting kind of haha. I am just telling you my philosophy and experience with the engineer class.
As for rifle…rifle has the potential to be good, but it should have it’a 1# auto attack damage increased or maybe inflict vulnerability perhaps ? It pierces which is kind of nice, but it is only good in Mass zerg wpvp and there are much better options.
The rifle has a tons of cc, and decent close melee range damage. It’s a decent weapon, but hammer is better.
Hammer has damage, defensive reflects, a stun, and a way to get into melee. The hammer is a strong overloaded weapon. It’s amazing.
Elixir gun is useful for it’s 1# because of fumble, and it can be useful in pvp if you can aim it’s skills (clunky aiming) but it scales poorly because you need healing power, condition, Power, and precision to make it useful for damage. The elixir gun is useful more for it’s utility and boons and conditions. It is a decent underrated weapon, but in PvP offensive and aggression are kind. Elixir gun is a defensive support weapon, and doesn’t serve well.
The pistol’s shield is not useful at all. Look at elixir. Same concept. With shield- You get defensive coldowns that last 3 or 4 seconds and they have 30 + sec coldown. That doesn’t work well and it is better to slot more damage from the pistol than to slot 2 defensive coldowns. The hammer has better defensive skills. If you were to make a bunker build, i could see shield elixirs being decent, but you would lose more games than win games
A note – in PvP games are won by putting pressure, not by playing defensively. If you are winning by playing defensive, it means the enemy is not putting pressure – or trying to win.
Turrets are incredibly useless in pvp and pve. They are basically cones / totems – immovable little objects that are supposed to block and create defensive perimeter (turtling) guard a area. Since anet sees that has toxic gameplay in pvp, they cannot function in the role they are supposed to do. In Pve they should be able to do 50% more damage to PvE NPCS or AI target monsters.
The boon thing has the potential to be useful. I would do this -
Make turrets tankier in pvp and make them create boons at a range of 1500 feet (Super long range) BUT give them a limited duration (maybe 6-8 seconds) and remove self destructing the turret OR keep it for blast finisher w/e. Now they are buffing cones. You can summon a boon buff every 25 + seconds for 6-8 seconds and help defend an area (buff all allies). The different between that and elixirs, is turrets would have shorter coldowns, better boon giving, still be able to fight (auto attack) and yes…they would make an area more entrenched if 3 or 4 players are there getting boons it would be like a turtle but more of a buffing zone.
But that is just a suggestion.
I think gadgets have the potential to be the most Overpowered skills in the entire game, but right now they are not that strong.
If you increased or gave damage to the gadget spells, they would be powerful damage and cc abilities, and you could slot 3 gadgets and the tools trait (that shoots lightning bolts) and make a strong OP bursting engineer. But other than that gadgets are good for pve bar breaker.
TLDR: Hammer is OP in PvP needs a heavy nerf or rework, engineer kits are viable in pve and pvp for having access to more spells for situations, elixirs are useless to take, turrets cant fulfill their defensive role, gadgets could be good but need damage buffs.
Thanks for reading.

I played engineer a little bit in spvp.
I find you should NEVER go damage. In a 1v1 damage can own newer players, but experience players will always counter your burst with cleanses and healing.
I used to be a big fan of soldier rifle to bunker or help allys, but now i always go scrapper hammer soldier.
In addition to surviving initial burst, i can return burst with hammer skills, and help my allys.
The only problem with engineer i find, is Conditions. Conditions destroy me and wreck me easily.
But power builds and pet builds are generally easy to handle.
I usually just bunker if my team is good, or 1v1 cap if my team is not so good. This is solo unranked q. In ranked q i imagine you cap bases and do a lot of team fights.
I don’t do much spvp anymore and i am not very good, so yea, but that’s just my opinion.
Oh yea i would do something like.
tools
alchemy
scrapper
rune of force sigil of impact and sigil of force.
rune of hoelberk for the -20% condition duration stacks with scrapper armor trait
Amulet of soldier.
And just go play objectively. I win about 66% or about 2 out of 3 games i solo q in. Sometimes i get a premade, but what can you do right ?
For pve, i can see most traits being useless. In PvE you choose your dps, healing, or other build and min max and pick things.
But… in pvp ….i see virtually all the traits have a use, based on builds, counters, and what you are trying to accomplish.
I said this in another thread, but a lot of people don’t tend to like engineer traits and play style because we don’t have OP traits and skills. But we are still strong in our own way.
But yea i think the traits could be update a little. I explosive and firearms boring. They are not really interesting traits, just dps buffs that could probably be more like “passives” part of the rotation. Maybe remove the explosive and fire arms traits and bake them into the pistol grenade bomb flame thrower kits. BUT that would be very OP buff to engineer.
I guess when it comes down to it, when “i” have to choose traits in pve or pvp, i could go more damage or more ultility or more defensive. Alchemy is highly defensive and tools is useful for speed and dodging.
Fire arms and explosives is all damage, so i you want more damage in your build you get those. Scrapper is weird because it offers damage, a lot of utility, and personal toughness. I like scrapper line the most for team play more than solo stuff.
But yea that’s my opinion on traits. I think the dps traits are boring, and the defensive utility and other traits are more interesting.
Why are you running into green circles? You need only 4 ppl go in, rest focuses fully on DPS. Letting your biggest dps classes running around is immense waste of DPS.
THIS. Your guild needs to prioritize their range dps and healers on green circles, and let you do your job. Just dps and ignore boss mechanics.
Well not all mechanics, try to avoid blue orbs, but for the most part, your guild should have someone else (another more weaker dps or a healer druid or a ranger or thief ) Get the green circles.
If your guild thinks you are being lazy, they may not realize that condition engineer is probably the highest sustain burst dps in pve at the moment. Engineers are amazing dps but they need to be baby sit while other classes do the mechanics.
I know i sound arrogant sorry, but engineer is really a good dps. The only “RARE” difference is if you are a healer, aoe engineer – with inventions, healing power toughness vitality, boon duration and alchemy inventions med kit and you focus on healing the raid. Then i can see you be put on green circle duty. But as it is…..
Guilds who are casual WILL NOT have it easy at raiding, but guilds who understand class strengths and min max, will have a good chance at raiding.
THis is my opinion, so i might be wrong, but it’s my experience so far.
This is my reason why i play engineer and my observations, so bare with me.
I play engineer because it is the most fun in terms of “cool abilities” and i also love scrapper for having support gyros and a support rez class mechanics.
I don’t mind also being a decent damage dealer – in the form of single target conditions, or multi target power damage.
But what i notice a lot of people don’t like with engineer is – they are hard to face stomp as, in spvp and duels. Most people find it too challenging or uninteresting to be an engineer in Pvp.
I am not saying engineer are weak, or need a buff but – I know as an engineer i cannot easily go on a killing spree in solo q or with a party but i depend on my allies to carry me in game. I also focus more on cc and healing and doing fields and controlling objectives like the sky hammer in that air map, or bunkering a capping point.
I know people who play ele and warrior or guardian tell me “they hate capping points” and would rather have an “arena or kill fest” then do objectives. I know people play other professions because they are better at killing more efficiently and engineer’s play style and skills take “more work to achieve similar killing power”.
But yea that’s my opinion, i might be wrong, but i enjoy engineer in pve more than spvp. But wpvp is really fun, both in the normal wpvp, and in edge of the mists.
I play engineer for the non meta skills and non meta play style instead of pure aggressive carry role in spvp. That’s just my style.
I don’t think engineer needs a ranged kit. The engineer is a short range support damage specialist. Part of mastering the engineer is being at mid to close range, and enjoying that style. If you want far ranged combat, try a warrior with a gun or a ranger.
I know people think an engineer could be awesome with a ranged kit, but engineer are supposed to be in melee. Even flame thrower, rifle, grenades and bomb, gives us option – cc damage fields to dominate in melee.
I think if an engineer had a ranged kit, it would destroy the class identity. But that’s just my opinion.
don’t forget you can only rez a person at range with function gyro once every 20 seconds. It has a 20 second coldown. So if a person goes down too much or many people are going down, you will have to manually rez.
ashern is most skilled than i am. He knows every combo, buff, trick, and skill in and out.
Allie i think our toolbelt gives us lots of awesome unique skills, more skills to play with.
The engineer has a TON of different skills 1-5 on 5 kits, over 25 tool belt skills, and an extra 15 skills on ultility slots, and 4 elite skills + a few racial skills here and there.
Ashern took my post and made a more concise informative post about how engineers are quite versatile.
If they could use all their skills instead of just limited to 1 heal 3 utility 1 elite 5 tool belt skills – they would be OP.
I am not understanding how you don’t like the tool belt or kit swapping. I love it, but only because i like it with my preferred play style and role.
engineers have a higher skill cap because they have a lot of options, tricks, combos, and builds.
They also have to change up their skills in fractal and probably in raids to be a benefit to their 5 man party.
I think most people want a class that can stand on it’s own as a complete and Powerful class. Engineer doesn’t look powerful at first because there is no simple way to do mad damage and win.
Rather it’s more of a jack of all trades with decent sustain damage in zerk or conditions and lots of skills that most people think are useless. The problem is useless is when people think of their own benefit and not how to help the zerg or have battle options.
well yea that’s my opinion of engineer.
the way i use functioning gyro is run up to a fallen ally – press f – and walk away and keep fighting.
It has a 20 second coldown and is pretty easy to use but it’s range is like 600 so you have to be REALLY close to someone to activate it. Remember that you can perform other task while rezzing an ally.
I havent tried it, but i can imagine you can double rez 2 people simultaneously rez 1 move to another fallen ally and rez another.
It doesn’t tell you when the gyro has been activated but i trust my instinct most of time and also watch the fallne ally’s bar to see it going up.
I love functioning gyro in pvp because people think i am fighting and not stomping, but i actually am about to stomp them. It’s good that it is tiny hehe.
you tested this on a golem right ? i think that when it comes down to boss mechanics and adds, and movement, condition grenades should do the most desirable damage, or berserker single target damage should do the best.
I know i cannot argue with “facts” but if you just beat on a golem for 10 minutes, that doesn’t really give an accurate dps because of movement and fight mechanics and adds too.
I think condition pistols could give the best dps on a boss fight that is a “patchwork” style as world of warcraft says…
where you just sit of the boss’s back and dps for 25 mins.
I also know that zerker is stronger in pvp and spvp because player armor is smaller than a monster armor (and less health too).
But this is just my experience. I appreciate your calculations and i will take note of that for my self too.
I am about to share my opinion, it may make you guys mad i am sorry. I just wanted to share my experiences, opinions, and mindset on engineer.
First off, i am a very spiritual and compassion guy, i have a guilty conscience and follow my feelings to help others.
I played world of warcraft and played a shaman because i love supporting and being versatile. Sorta a damage / healing, support / utility.
WHEN i first started playing the engineer i felt like my class was lacking because other classes had more survivability. or massive damage. I always look at other classes with jealousy and felt engineers were weak or didn’t fit the meta.
Maybe in previous patches that’s how it was. I don’t know. I only played for a bout 2 months. I have a level 80 charr engineer whom i love and only play that 1 profession. I tried to level a necromancer and a warrior but i lost interest. The engineer keeps my attention and i love it.
Now why do i love the engineer ? Well as i experimented with builds and skills, i learned that engineers have a lot of the same skills other classes have, but the other classes use them selfishly or solo wise. Engineers have a lot of cool tricks and neat skills.
Before i get into a engineer philosophy rant i want to talk about the scrapper.
The scrapper offers defense and team support skills. If you don’t want to be a team player or need the defense, the entire line may be useless for you.
I know people expected scrapper to be a solo heavy hitting killing spree solo bad kitten . But it didn’t turn out that way.
We get function gyro, which in my opinion – is awesome – because we can rez an ally and continue fight and moving. It’s basically a short ranged click to rez and then leave the downed guy while you focus on fighting. That’s how i use it.
AGAIN if you don’t want to be a support specialist, then engineer is not very fun or exciting.
Now philosophy wise – Engineers have kits which you can use to do damage and cc and utility. I like flame thrower for sustain single target, and the knock back, flame field for allies, and blindness defense. Grenade kit deals heavy aoe damage, very good. Bomb kit is useful for it’s blast finisher tool belt skill (or turrets too) but bomb is not as good as grenade kit.
Elixir gun is not that great in pve because 1# fumble doesn’t usually work on bosses or champions. BUT in pvp fumble is AWESOME. Makes all attacks skills and spells 50% miss and also gives endurance reduction and some sustain condition damage from the bleed. The other skills have their use but i find elixir gun is good when your not focused and need to help another person in pvp.
Tool kit is useful for blocking attacks and dealing deceny melee damage. I think hammer is the upgrade version of tool kit. I wouldn’t recommend using tool kit with turrets, i tried that and the turrets die to fast. Tool kit is decent in pvp.
Elixirs are useful in their own way, but i never use them with hgh. I use the rez one for a team rez if we need it, elixir s for stealth and defense, elixir x for the tool belt moa spell. and Elixir of rage with grenades to do a huge amount of 1# burst damage or drop 10 bombs on the enemy for massive clutch burst.
other things…
Tool belt trait is good if you need the endurance or if you build around the static bolt. But i agree, some of the traits are not very useful.
I use berserker armor and trying to get some defensive armor for raids (probably 60% zerk and 40% defense armor maybe vit healing and power)
I find toughness is not a very good stat. I can use a healing turret in 20 seconds with healing power to restore a good chunk of my health, and with dodges and moving i can wait another 20 seconds to heal . But with the vitality i can take a few big hits before i have to heal or with dodges i can manage.
Gyros…. i must say gyros are kind of weak, but only some are useful. I find stealth gyro and the curing condition gyro to be most useful in pve. PvP wise only stealth gyro is really useful barely anyways.
Gyros are like useful pets that perform some major effect before dying off. Like a totem on shaman wow :P
Oh and the key to playing engineer is to have decent damage for your self in pve, while having 1 or 2 ultility slots and your ultimate slot to swap out skills to support other players.
I know engineer is not fun being a support character, but i play it as that, and i don’t see it as weak. I study the situations and swap skills for the right situation. In sPvP if we had all our skills, we would be extremely OP
TLDR : Engineer feels like a support class more than a heavy power class, and i think they are fine in pve, but you need the mindset to play an engineer. They can build damage, but if you focus on damage, you miss out on a lot of their useful (team oriented) skills. Sorry for my ranting i hope people look at engineer more towards a support profession rather than a primary bad kitten character.
PS : i hate hammer in pve. It deals small packets of burst damage, but doesn’t deal massive sustain damage. And it’s more defensive oriented with it’s skills.
Sorry i was on an iphone when i typed that.
Any ways yea for most pve content i do, i focus on damage and berserker gear. I know ice bows and warrior banners were a thing back then, but i just stick to berserker gear and kits.
I don’t think i could be an engineer tank. Scrapper has to focus on avoiding mechanics not absorbing damage. The traits give toughness which is nice, but toughness cant save you from the damage you take it in fractals or raids (in my opinion) but i don’t have much experience.
I find elixirs to be useless. Yes you could go elixir build and might stacking for heavy damage but i think setting 2-5 with elixirs and trying to stay 25 might stack is tedious. I rather use skills for shield breakers (cc) and kits that do damage or brings fields. The only 2 elixirs i like are elixir s (defense bubble and stealth) and moa shield breaker (elixir x)
Obviously i am a noob so maybe i don’t know what i am talking about, but that has been my experience playing heart of thorns.
SPvP i don’t do.
Gyros are useless in solo content, decent in group content (stealth and rezing are my favorite) and i don’t do spvp that much.
World pvp is not great if you zerg but if you hunt players, engineer can be fun.
Sorry i am ranting i wanted to clear a few things up.
NOT ALL ENGINER SKILLS ARE USELESS. but i just dps are engineer, never tank.
Engineers are like wizards in dungeons and dragons. You prepare the right skill for the right situation,. you are called a pro engineer god.
YOu prepare the wrong skill that is useless, you are called a fail engineer or noob at your class.
I played fractals edge of the mists, world v world, spvp, and farm the world for stuff.
I know that for fractals, if my guild doesn’t bring a mesmer or thief i am forced to trade some of my damage kits for more utility.
I use berserker gear and flame thrower for single target and grenades for cleave and aoe. I use morter kit for fields with that lightning bolt tool kit spell to do a blast finisher.
That is my dps spec, i don’t do the meta wiki tedious rotation because most of those skills don’t do good damage but provide good conditions cc or fields. And i am after power physical damage and i look on grenade kit (those i do spam 1-5) the physical part of the grenade kits damage on 2-5 does more damage then 1 spamming auto attack.
Flame thrower does decent (not amazing) lined auto attack physical damage.
I am not a pro sorry.
But yes back on topic, an engineer is like a wizard. You have to prepare the right skills for the right environments and boss fights. You may need stealth gyro for sneaking in some dungeons, crowd control for boss breakers, or several blast finishers for a certain fight you use turrets.
The whole point of my post is this – as an engineer i go to my default zerker set up when i can but for the most part , i never stay in any 1 build for long. I am always preparing my skills before me and my guild goes into the next fractal or dungeon or boss fight. Playing in a guild gives you a lot of teamwork experience.
Yea engineer has some useful skills but it depends on the fight and the dungeon’s environment. If you prepare the right skill for the right encounter, you are called an engineer god.
SPvP i suck at so yea…
Any ways this is my opinion, hope you enjoyed the read.
I will say my full opinion instead of ranting like I did above. I used flamethrower grenades elixir s berserker build and nothing else in pve. Sinister pistol nades doesn’t do dps fast enough even in ascended armor compared to ascended zerker gear from my experience. That’s my only build. I switch out elixir s for an other elixir or ram to shield break with moa and flame thrower 3. I don’t bother with my other elixirs or ultility or turrets. You might call me a noob but I think I do my job pretty well. I think most engineer skills are useless or give less value then a full zerker grenade flame thrower build I have. This is speaking from a pve stand point. Grenades aoe flame thrower single target. Healing turret and shrink and dodge for defense and stealth for group ultility in fractals. I switch between more kit and elixir x. Also in spvp I just do muarader rifle nades tool kit and get solo kills and solo caps. Even if I lose the match I still get 3 chest for higher points and killing spree. I think it’s not engineers fualt we suck. But the meta favors damage rather then ultility and defensive builds in pve and spvp has objectives so that is hard to balance classes. They should make an arena where you duel in a sand box for 3v3 or 5v5. In pve I Rez people and bar break and follow mechanics. But I think 25 stacks of might is not as good as some other traits and with runes of strength you can slowly hit 25 might anyways. Elixirs would be better if they didn’t require skill slots or we could cast the. While maintaning our kits. Engineers are not jack of all trades if you want to min max. Most of the ultility they bring can be brought by other profession and we are good at damage only. Our rezzing is not that great when you can just Rez them your self instead of gyro or elixir field. I am speaking from a fractal perspective. Dps is king in endgame for engineer. Tanking in raids won’t be very good for scrapper. Scrapper dies quickly to mobs in silver waste as tank spec. Champions elites and veterans do too much damage to tank. Just dodge and deliver max dps as possible. Anet needs to make it so after you dodge all damage is reduced by 95% for 3 seconds before a dodge comes off coldown. Or give tanking engineers more conditions to apply and healing power to heal ally’s. A tank that does no damage cant heal or bring useful ultility and conditions is worthless. Dps that can’t dps are worthless. This is my opinion in a calm way about pve content and engineer.
The tool belt skills are generally not very useful. Only elixier x is useful (for controlling polymorph) and that is an elite skill.
Turrets die to fast, and you cannot make a build around them. If you use full turret traits for boons and reflections, they hardly make a “REAL” defense or buffing difference in solo or group play.
Gadgets are generally combo finishers and cc. Their coldowns are too long, and combos with engineer hardly do anything (dps or survival wise) only blast water is good for the burst healing for solo or group.
Gyros are clunky and annoying and a waste of a skill slot. The utility you provide with gyros can be provided more easily with other classes. Also fields are not very “game changing” as pure conditions or raw zerk damage is better.
Elixiers are only small boons that don’t last long, and waste skill slots to cast with heavy coldowns. Most people selfishly use elixirs to boon themselves up for dps and defense.
The ultimates are not that great. The medical supplies is only good for the stun. Morter kit is best in slot for 1200 range attacks and explosive dps. The fields don’t last as long as some other classes.
PVE RANT DONE
PVP RANT
in pvp engineer is tanky and solos alright but doesn’t offer team support, and cannot do enough damage to go on a killing spree or solo cap points with 2 or more people.
Engineer can only solo 1v1 a person and as soon as it’s 2v1 you die or run. Other professions (chronomancer reaper, dragon hunter) can 1v2 and are a lot less punishing for making mistakes and reacting to pvp combat.
PVP RANT END
WVW PVP
Engineer is not as good as a warrior with a war horn. Also zerg combat is so unbalanced that i don’t think any profession is best with zerging. Just spam, arrow carts, spam aoe, and spam heals and push into the enemy zerg and wipe up.
For small skirmishes, engineer doesn’t do good 1v2 and a good chronomancer and necromancer can 2v3 or 2v4 depending on the gear of the enemy and skill.
WVWPVP rant end.
Sorry i am complaining, but engineer is my main, and i take frequent breaks playing other games until i forget what engineer problems have – then comeback and am like “Oh”
I think engineer should get a skill that no other class has. That would make them unique and have a place in the game.
I will speak my experience on 2 things – wow mmo and engineer.
Wow mmo……i played world of warcraft for 11 years. I played a shaman. Shaman used to be this bard jack of all trade. Shaman was reworked to be a damage dealer and healer. The new meta of tank healing dps killed shaman class skills and made them similar to a druid and a priest.
I know wow has raid encounters where dps are too low and the bosses enrage. Anet should study blizzard wow games and see how their design is.
AS FOR ENGINEER my experience with engineer is – i get bored with pve and pvp.
I play engineer and do condition nades and i do awesome aoe damage, and decent pistol single target damage. BUt like you said, nobody cares or appreciates my gyros, tool belt elixiers (buffs) or anything. It’s just cc (bar breakers), damage, healing, and dodges. Thats pve for heart of thorns.
I know in pve i struggle with what skills to use. When i solo i find virtually 80% of my skills useless. Hammer is useless in pve because it doesn’t do enough damage and doesn’t provide enough tankiness against the monsters. I know elixirs are not that great because you use them to stack might but it’s not the “best” dps build you can go.
Gadgets are useless solo wise and so are turrets.
In group play, i often get confused – should i spec for the team utility or for damage. If i spec utility i just spec cc breakers and buffs and utility. BUT nobody appreciates that stuff. In fact people can do my roles easier than my class can do them. I wish i could do STRONG damage and STRONG cc and STRONG utility. But as it is, i am useless to my party.
PvP wise, i don’t do enough damage to go on a killing spree i die before i get more than 1 kill. I know to be succesful in pvp you have to use rifle and kits or hammer and kits. But PVP has this focus on soloing, and winning by your self, and not caring about the team or working as a team, except in guild wars 2 spvp esports, and everytime they use an engineer, the team that uses engineer loses.
SO my point is, engineer sucks at pvp and pve. We are supposed to be a support dps class, but fail to be damaging or supporting. It’s the fault of the design content AND the player base. Players don’t care about supporting. They care about winning , killing, and soloing, and engineer does neither damage or supporting.
The scrapper. I like it and hate it at the same time. I
I love the scrapper in edge of the mists and world pvp. I can use healing gyro and some good traits to boost my zerg’s or party’s effectiveness and be a useful offtank, main healer, support melee character.
So i like the scrapper’s utility for grouped content.
But when i am soloing, especially in the new areas, i don’t do enough damage and i take a lot of damage. My hammer skills are not very strong, even with HGH elixir trait and using soldier gear. But it’s fine, i am sure if i used berserker gear i would do more damage. I tend to take a lot of damage in the new areas even with toughness and vitality.
I think the healing gyro is fine. If you run with swiftness it does have a slight hard time keeping up. BUt it heals fine and explodes fine. And it doesn’t die too fast unless a player focuses it down.
I still need to unlock more things but that is my experience.
I think engineer is fine, they are not terrible or bad. I used to think engineers were under powered in spvp, but it’s not till i learned the strengths of my profession that i started doing decent in spvp.
healing turret is not that strong in pve or pvp. It usually gets destroyed after 1 cast of water. I usually just spend the 25 second coldown to over charge water field blast finisher my turret for the best healing possible.
I think the elixier healing becomes better with alchemy traits, and a.e.d is useful in some situations namely fractals. Med kit is absolutely niche because your team has to know how to walk over med packs and usually most teams rather have a damage dealer than a medic engineer.
Overall i think engineers should get a couple of unique skills that would make them very useful like a portal or friendly pull or a new type of condition or boon.
They are tanky short ranged mages…they either need massive damage or massive utility to be useful in spvp and other pvp modes. But they are fine 1v1 and small pvp skirmishes. Most classes bring massive damage. Engineers bring cc and utility but it’s not enough.
I like either explosive finishers with a lot of light or holiday finishers. I am kind of a mean troll in wvw or spvp i guess haha those holiday finishers might make someone mad xD but yea i love holiday finishers and explosions or lights in the finishers.
I hope i can get a set of cool looking wings i will have my next paycheck ready for the 25$ gem card from best buy.
I bought the mad scientist outfit and love it very much. I hope to buy some halloween wardrobes for my necromancer this october i want him to have a very dark cool outfit i will be shopping and picking some cool outfits with my gems.
I think the balthazar fire armor is cool, it makes my char have a fire tail. But i don’t play heavy armor classes very much so i don’t use that outfit. Anet i am glad to support you i just came from world of warcraft and love guild wars 2 a lot.
So i have been playing for about a month almost 2 months. I know people go to thief ele warrior or mesmer and ranger.
I played spvp and gotten deer rank and about 200 points, i am still a small fry.
THIS post is about why i like engineer. I know it’s my opinion.
For starters i see everyone loves to use berserker gear / amulet in spvp and world pvp. It’s the most damaging and offensive oriented build stat that kills the fastest.
I feel engineer is not made for damage – even though they can spec for damage, it’s not as strong as other classes.
I know in the engineer forums they cry and cry about engineer not being strong. I know engineer is not made like other classes to faceroll and deal massive damage and go on killing sprees.
I feel engineer is a tanky short ranged caster that excels at stuns, support, and moderate sustain damage.
For this reason – i am enjoying my engineer and learning to build around my strengths not my weaknesses. I know engineers are not in the meta or fashionably loved very much. I try to pvp as rifle soldier with some cc and healing and moderate damage. I can bunker on cap areas or i can 1v1 just fine.
I know i said in an earlier post on engineer forums (if you check my history log of posting) that engineer is the weakest class in pvp. Well they are not the weakest class they are just the most different in terms of what the meta and players love to play – raw offense damage dealers. I fall in the trap of trying to be a solo killing machine with my engineer profession. But that’s not the most effective way to play engineer.
So i wanted to just say, that i think scrapper and engineer are very fun and have a unique play style that most people and especially – teams – will need to learn how to take advantage of. The engineer has an amazing class designer and i love the supporting tanky short ranged caster role i play in spvp and in fractals and wvw.
I want to finish my post by saying that most people want to faceroll as engineer but that is not how the class works. And that is not how to be a high skilled cap engineer. Most people think high skilled capped engineers are those that can score the most kills or do most damage. But a really skilled engineer can be very useful to his teammates and assit in damage healing and control, and can 1v1 pretty decent with the right stats and runes/sigils.
Thanks for reading i hope i helped new players who want to play engineer.
(edited by Anthony.1579)
I use a flame pistol build for fun when i want to trash noobs. I do like 27k burns over 14 seconds, with condition stats and buffs and right builds.
Yea i like to play engineer for fun and interesting build combinations. I just don’t know how useful i will be to my guild. I am considering rerolling warrior or mesmer.
As far as fractals go, i am pretty useful for damage and stealth (we don’t have many thief in our guild).
I think engineer is just not good at being offensive. And when engineer IS offensive, we lose a lot of defense that makes us squishy in melee. And other melee classes have niche builds that provide defense keys with their raw offense like aegis, burn blocking, stability, and that warrior stance that makes them immune to damage.
So engineer is very tanky short range …..mage ?…or support ?
Sorry i made some people mad. I am getting better at playing engineer i just avoid spvp when i can so i don’t go on tilt or lose my peace of mind.
Thanks for the responses, talk to you guys soon.
So i am kind of new to guild wars, so this is just my opinion.
Basically i think engineer is the weakest profession in PvP. I will explain why in this post.
For starters i usually do the soldier rifle build with grandes tool kit and elixer s and elixer x for tornado or rampage.
But i find engineers are very under powered and weak.
Why you might ask ? well for starters i had to memorize my hot keys on my naga razor mouse and kit dance into defensive coldowns and kit dance into offensive skills with combos.
YES THE ENGINEER HAS THE HIGHEST SKILL CAP IN THE GAME ! not for noobs but memorizing the combos and when too use your offensive skills when sigil coldowns are up or reacting to enemy player’s skills with elixier S or tool kit shield block. Engineer has a high skill cap kit dancing and using different skills for the right moment as the fight flows.
BUT…………
Even 1v1 or 2v2 or 3v3 i find my self having to play more skillful and “work harder” to achieve less results than say a warrior guardian or necromancer, warrior, ele or mesmer.
I know some classes have 7-12 buttons and use combos and fields.
But engineer uses 5 main skill buttons, 5 tool kit buttons, 5 granade buttons, 5 tool belt buttons, combos and using attack damage skills when sigils are up to maxmize critical damage.
Engineer is too hard to play for the amount of success invested. Other professions can do less skill and get better results at killing and capping points and even bunkering.
Speaking of bunkering……my soldier meta build is more of a banker than a ganker or roamer. I tend to have to pop coldowns and waste the enemies time for them trying to kill me while my team caps other points. But that is pretty much all i am good for, and i am probably better re rolling into a different profession.
Yes kit dancing is not for noobs. knowing when to shield and when to pop your damage and using stealth at the right time, and using mowai bird cc all make an engineer hard to play.
And what about a GOOD engineer you say ? Surely they are balanced around the skillful engineers ? Yes but a skillful ranger or guardian or warrior, or mesmer or ele can beat an engineer 1v1 most of the time or waste the engineers time.
I cannot go on a killing spree unless i build a burning pistols build and that’s against nubs who don’t cleanse. And i feel my engineer is meta pushed into a bunkering tanky staller who just buys time for my team to cap other things.
World PvP is not so bad, if you get good ascended gear and 1v1 you have a fairly “decent” chance at surviving.
But as far as “work” goes, the other professions give better results for a lower skill than an engineer.
HOW TO FIX THEM ? ARE THEY EVEN BROKEN?
well engineer is this tanky short ranged class that has a lot of toughness and weak burst damage at intervals and than has to wait. But as far as the “identity” goes, engineer is too many things at once. Alchemist, engineer, commando, tanky support char, and that’s all i can think of now. I don’t know how to fix engineers. Their skills are all unique and make the engineer very “buffing, defensive, controlling” nature. I know we got that orbital strike which is nice, but it’s not that great in spvp and with maurader amulet instead of soldier amulet. I don’t know a good change for engineer. They are building half defense and health offense and have lots of control buffs and ultiltiy in their kit. But to win you need damage, cc immunity, and spammable cc. The engineer is pigoened into bunker or defensive against most professions. I think for engineer, the fights get worse the larger number of players are in the fights. 1v1 is decent, 2v2 is not too bad, 3v3 is starting to become hard for engineer and 5v5 is horrible. The first thing the zerg or team will do is rush the engineer forcing you too play defensivly. That gives time sometimes for your allies to do damage, but if they find you jumping into defensives they swap to someone else. So i don’t know how to fix engineers. I like the style, but it just doesn’t fit the meta, because meta is all damage, all zerg, all offense, lots of cc, and survival coldowns. http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki shows good great and meta and most builds are all damage, with guardian bunker necro celestial and engineer hybrid builds. Everything else is damage. SO yea i don’t know how to fix engineer.
But yes…i have fun with my engineer leveling, questing, farming, soloing the world, and sometimes dungeons and wvw leveling (eot zerg trains are brain dead)
but spvp is were i really get frustrated. I tried to form a combo team with my guild.
The melee cleave wants guardians theifs and warriors. The spell cleave wants mesmers necros and eles. I have seen a premade with 1 ranger 2 mesmers 1 condition necro and 1 pet necro. Annoying.
I am still trying to find a build or “comp” for engineer in 5v5. I don’t know i have to study the skills and communicate with my team.
Well this concludes my rant. Sorry if i offend some of you. I am just going off personal spvp experience. Yes i am QQ i need to get good haha. I hope someone replies to this, positive or negative.
I like engineer because of the abilities engineer has. LIke we have a couple of stuns, some healing, buffs, turrets, kits, and a cool style.
I like to think of us as a "short range mage, who deals close range – melee damage and heals a little and has better defense than other professions, but also has decent damage and control.
I know this “META” thing favors raw damage and no other builds or styles of play. So engineer doesn’t feel very popular or seem very flashy. I picked engineer knowing i wasn’t going to be the best damage dealer or best supporting char or tank (gaurdian)
BUT man we have some interesting abilities. And the trait lines are very cool. I think alchemy is the best “tanky / buffing” line and fire arms is where the damage is at.
Tools has useful utility and well i think inventions can be used for something defensive or team oriented.
I am a noob player, but maybe my fresh mind has hope and love for engineer profession. But i love this profession. I have fun playing a profession i enjoy, than playing a profession to win.
I get fun out of flavor, looks, uniqueness, cool interesting abilities and being very different.
I don’t get fun out of playing something i don’t like but play it because i am winning – the winning is supposed to be the satisfaction you get. But most people get burned out, or they win all the time and are still “restless” and THEN they are in trouble because now they are not having fun playing a meta profession even after winning.
Sorry for my philosophy rant, but yea, i love engineer for aesthetic flavor more than anything else.
Ok so i was really noobish.
I went to http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki
and i learned about about marauder rifle build
I felt self conscious and compassionate for my guild mates. We would lose games so i wanted to help them. And i adjusted my build and skills and play a more tanky, sustain damage dealer with lots of stuns and minor healing.
I know there is no trinity, but i like to help my teammates out.
A few things i wanted to mention was….
The tool wrench’s pull doesn’t always seem to work, i know that is a topic and i have first hand experience. Sometimes it goes on coldown and nothing happens.
also i tend to be the first one to get blowned up in SPvP and when i am not focused we ACTUALLY win fights. I am not going to be arrogant and say it’s because of me, but engineer seems to be a hard profession to play in SPvP because we have to analyze the fight and react and be flexible.
I feel less noob and more better at playing pvp, but i feel like i need allies to help me kill an enemy.
1v1 i can sometimes win, if the enemy is clumsy, noob, or lacks heavy damage. Hammer wars and hammer guardians do way too much damage for me, but medium armor and light armor cprofessions are actually pretty “fightable” in 1v1
In team fights, i use rifle tools, grenades, and either defense tiny elixer, or slick shoes or ram. I will bring more cc if i can but usually i am the team tank.
I don’t always play defensively or offensively i try to cc people and apply pressure on the enemy team.
Sorry i am ranting a lot. I am having a lot of fun doing structured pvp with maurader pvp build. I feel like a tanky rogue from wow. Or a controlling tanky dps.
I know in pve i went condition grenades and i farm a place called silvershard waste with my guild.
Engineer is fun, but man i feel bad when i don’t react fast enough in SPvP or i let someone die.
Any ways i’ll shut up now. Thanks for reading, i am trying to improve my self so THANK YOU for the feedback and tips. Much appreciate you all. Have fun playing engineer and goodluck.
Hello everybody i am new to the forums and i am about to rant blog a lot.
I want to say i really love the engineer, my favorite profession.
So where do i begin….i used to play a enhancement shaman in world of warcraft, but bought guild wars 2 and heart of thorns for 50$ YEA i am a casual noob haha.
I played for 1 week, getting to level 31 in maps and then getting to 80 from edge of the mists.
NOW what i really love about engineer is their versatility. I have trouble 1v1 in structured pvp, but with my guild i am in, i can go with some friends in wvw or edge of the mists or structured pvp and be very useful.
I love alchemy and fire arms, those 2 are damage and survival and buffs. Then i choose between tools if i need more damage and control, or inventions if i need more survival and buffs.
I don’t usually have a good build, but i pack multiple sets of exotic armor, like settlers for condition healing and toughness with elixier gun and mercy runes, or rabid conditional pistols if i need damage. I tend to focus on my blasts finishers and combo fields, and swap out elixirs and gadgets and stuff as my team needs me to be a certain playstyle.
I am not good at engineer class. I only play him on point with a team and not very good solo wise or 1v1. I guess i need more experience.
I know i am a noob. I didn’t like a pure damage profession or pure tanky profession like guardian. I like engineer for the bard / like generalist role.
So thanks for reading this i know it will probably be ignored but i am happy to be part of the engineer community. Thanks all.
