Is Zhaitan's return viable lore-wise?

Zhaitan would probably come back eventually. Wasn’t it mentioned that the Elder Dragon was like forces of nature and not like mortals?

Might take several hundred years or so…

Maybe Zhaitian won’t come back, but the force he represents will eventually result in another dragon?

This is something they should consider for future expansions, By having the story mode a difficult but satisfying ending to a dragon, but then having explorer consist of the dragon returning in a “final form” in explorer.

They could have done something like make Zhatian return as just a beating heart/core that constructs flesh around it to form temporary combat forms, or something cool like that.

I still get how people think the Juton are that far off in appearance from Norn, let alone humans.

From my perspective they look like a Neanderthal compared to a cro-magnon. The difference are not to extreme in body shape and structure, albeit some concept art depicts them with fiercer looking canine teeth than seen ingame. The Ogres which they supposedly relate too are way more off, having horns, sharp teeth and spinal spikes, as well as Un-proportional limb length(short leg, long arms). The notion that the Norn came from Kodan being transformed by Koda or the spirits just seems off.

However, the idea that Norn are an off-shot of humans hadn’t crossed my mind and I feel it also has a greater probably than that of the Kodan theory. However I’m not ready to denounce a Jotun involvement, as they’ve been competing with the Norn for quite awhile, not to mention there is an obvious “Giant” theme amongst the Juton and Norn.

Like Oglaf said, maybe they’re half Juton?

Well I don’t think you can debate “The Koda”‘s existance due to it residing in The Mists which can literally have anything and everything inside it, I always saw the GW2 religious system liberating as due to The Mists all religions barring The Eternal Alchemy which has no physical manifestation can be real. The Voice does communicate with something in The Mists and the race of Koda name it “The Koda” which make that deity a reality whether it makes it a god is another thing. The Koda’s religious beginnings mentions spirits, even going so far as to say that their deity IS a spirit of the wild. Why could the Koda that left to hunt not have called out to the other spirits for guidance? Their fore starting their current religion?

In regards to the Jotun splitting and one half finding the spirits and saving themselves from this fall from grace I just don’t buy it, the Jotun were very big headed with a holyer than thou attitude, for them to suddenly change makes no sense to me.

Because Finding a god generally has a huge impact on people. I’ve seen more arrogant beings in fantasy become humbled and enlightened before supernatural beings offering salvation from suffering.

The Kodan acknowledge the spirits as do many races who have clearly seen their power, however Norn spirit worship and the views on spirits by the Kodan far too greatly to make sense of the"lost hunter" story.

Koda might exist but not as the Kodan beleive he does. through acquired knowledge and human humility we have come to know the six human gods as powerful Alien entities seeking refuge from whatever they attempted to escape from through the Mists. the claims of Koda are beyond that, pertaining too an absolute creator/personification of nature. His role as stated is far too great, specifically for a secondary race to play the game of favorites(Kodan the Jury, Koda the Judge). Whatever they are talking too, it definitely isn’t something that groundbreakingly important.

“However Kodan have not shown the ability to shapeshift and the idea of the spirits turning bears into human like beings just seems odd.”

Exactly. The Kodan seem to be just like anthro furries to me and it should be impossible for something human looking like the norn to come from them without some sort of divine/magical genetic engineering assistance. And a knowledge as to what humans are and look like.

Neither have the Jotun.

Both Kodan and Juton have no connection or reverence to the Spirits of the Wild, which granted the power to the Norn.

The idea is that the shapeshifting isn’t truly a part of the norn race but a side effect of their worship. This means that their base form is their natural form.

Norn look like huge humans with a naturally superior muscle build, Juton look like Neanderthals with a skin condition and a beer gut. There really isn’t that much of a physical difference between Norn and Juton outside of size.

The Norn from Koda makes more sense to me, especially when you put their cultures side by side. As well as the story of The Claw without The Voice going out to hunt, and hunting being a huge part of what Norn culture is now.

The connection is only really seen with the fact that Norn can transform.

However Kodan have not shown the ability to shapeshift and the idea of the spirits turning bears into human like beings just seems odd.

The Juton body shape is closer to the norn than that of their supposed Ogre cousins.

What about their deep reliance on honor and integrity, while the Jotun will famously back stab and destroy each other as shown by the downfall of their civilisation?

Or them both believing deeply in a chosen faith, the Koda having their god, and the Norns having the spirits while the Jotun have no religion or faith at all?

Hell if you want to go really simple similarities (granted they share this with the Jotun as well) their inhabitants of cold places!

The Jotun and Norns are just too different to be anything more than rivals in my opinion.

The Divergence in culture is clearly indicated by the Norns discovery of the spirits of the Wild. When the Juton fell down, they fell down hard. One side out of desperation might have found the spirits while the other delved down into primitiveness.

The Existence of Koda is debatable, an issue with fantasy games is that unless a universal Pantheon is established, then Cultural gods are left in the mystery, as saying “Well this culture is wrong and their gods don’t exist” ruins the allure of a race (Specifically if it’s playabe, Hence why in WoW Night Elf Fans Cringe at the idea of their god being a wind chime). While the faith of the Kodan has a powerful and inspirational message, I do not feel there is enough evidence to suggest Koda actually exists and therefore Koda turning Kodan into a Human form for being imbalanced seems rather silly.

I also don’t see cultural similarities as being an indicator of heredity.

In Thruln the Losts story he says the following.

“In the beginning, humans lived like grawl. The gods had not yet noticed them. Their magic was primitive: fire, earth, air and water. My jotun ancestors helped them survive.”

Then Later.

“Humans collected on the high plains. Tribes became settlements. Settlements became a kingdom. And that was when the gods noticed them and betrayed the jotun”

“The other races looked up to the norn and the jotun. We were superior to all other races, and we were gaining on the gods.”

He never says the Norn were there before the Humans only that other races looked up to Both norn and Jotun. And the gods he seems to speaking of are the human gods yet he acts as if they are Jotun gods. But the Jotun are supposedly native to Tyria so why would he view the human gods as gods?

Believe it or not, I know it sounds like bullkitten, but it is suggested in the lore that this is actually a lie told by the Jotun to make their culture seem more significant… notice how I said suggested, I’m not say it is a lie, but it’s suggested.

In an earlier thread there was a huge argument surrounding thrulns stories, most of it on the basis of lore that the stories contradict being more valid due to their stronger presence in official lore. As well as if things should be taken literally or figuratively (Such as thruln saying humans lived like grawl, which could have been a comparison to say that early human society was Grawlike compared to the advanced society of the Juton rather than the Juton claiming humans were literally as primitive as grawl.)

Given that the human gods have families and predecessors, I don’t take the idea that the Juton once had Gods similar to the human gods as being impossible. I dabble in the idea that an older pantheon once championed the Juton/Norn but their successors turned to humanity through Dwayna, as the earlier members wouldn’t necessarily be considered human gods.

Though it is stated the Kodan believe the norn are their offshoots, this is literally mentioned no where else but in the Kodan’s racial description, making it somewhat questionable.

Now, there is a sort of thing I like to call The Mystery Diversion rule that exists in game franchises.

This rule basically is formed out of a franchises inability to weave a number of reasonable ingame theories or explanations that bewilder the player into not having the ability to decipher a “more likely orgin”. This is a kind of fluff that is used to mystify an entity by adding clues to indicate several likely origins. An example of this used effectively can be found in TES:Skyrim regarding Wispmothers. They give 2 perfectly reasonable theories that leave the player wondering exactly what the Wispmothers are.

However, sometime when a franchise is unsure, they give off one possible explination and drawn it as a mystery until eventually proving it’s correction due to their lack of imagination and what not.

In Warcraft this rule occurs with Night elves, who although were given a divine background, have always had a “mystery ancestor” race that was said to be Trolls by Trolls only to be denied and refuted by elves. They kept this theory around for years until finally stating it was officially true (Causing elf fans to rage). This has happened in other games, where an mystery origin is reveled and left long enough to just become official.

So the Kodan theory likely already has grounds given the length of the norn origin mystery.

Despite this, I still feel that there is some truth to Thrulns legends and that at some point Norn and Juton co-existed, possibly as one people.

What gets my goat is when people tell us what the deal is on our server, when they are not our server, seen what is going on behind the scenes, or talked to any of the transfers.

Do doubt there are “band wagoners” present, but that hardly makes us a “band wagon server”. We will see. I don’t have a crystal ball like some, but I do have personal experience with the WvW population on my own server.

As Special K has progressed and crushed each tier they have taken guilds with it. CD alone had 200+ and even 500+ people guilds jump to it in the last week. It certainly isn’t full of bandwagon jumpers but it still has a lot of them.

How much you wanna bet most of them will jump ship if you take a horrible beating in T2?

I wouldn’t bet a cent, Kainengs ascension has little to do with arrival of bandwagoners.

So…then why didn’t kaineng start plowing through the tiers earlier? Oh wait, they didn’t have the numbers and transfers they have now.

Kaineng was so bad before the initial guilds transferred(For reasons pertaining to issues with their home realm) that it took weeks of map capping before getting out of eighth tier.

It was only after the formation of the NEO alliance and the ascension of at least two tiers that other groups got interested and transferred over. The actual bandwagoners (People who joined to take advantage of the ascension and would leave at the first sign of hitting a challenging opponent) are of little impact.

As much as people would like to believe Kaineng is fragile construct destined to fall apart once it actually meets an opponent it can’t simply dominate, that idea just isn’t so.

I played on Friday night (flip night)-Yak’s Bend. It was even for a few hours. I logged in Sunday and it’s all Kaineng, I mean all blue, save a spawn point in our homeland. I’m on Yak’s and enjoy WvW. There are reasons for domination. Congratulations to Kaineng, you deserve to move like Maguuma did by dominating last week. I’m noticing a pattern: one overwhelming dominant world v 2 unremarkable opponents. Certainly there must be reasons for this pattern.

the pattern is simple. major free transfers flooded the top WvW servers so whole guilds moved either A) couldn’t deal with the competition in the higher brackets or B ) have to run in zergs bigger than 40+ couldn’t flood the map due to 4 hour + ques so they moved to lower level servers so they could zerg rush the lower tiers and completely dominate inflating their win records with ridiculously out matched servers. Really not that difficult to dominate when you outnumber the other servers 10 to 1 the majority of the day.

It was actually C.) deadweight issues.

Top tier servers were mostly high pop servers on launch, so when people get bored of the game and cease playing it(for either a long time or never returning/too afraid to cancel account) they would fill the server with inactive accounts. Newer guilds found that expanding their power was difficult and decided to move the lowest populated server in order to create an expanding WVW/PVE community. It started with a few up and coming guilds and resulted with an exodus of more powerful guilds seeking a more unified community (Hence the formation of the NEOAlliance). Some might have left for a domination fix, but that was never the fuel.(It was likely the logic that they could multiply their current status with that of another community).

The notion that the realm will fall in collapse once the speedy ascension hits a challenge is false.

Don’t worry about it, soon Kaineng will reach a tier where they do nothing but lose and those people will be stuck on a server that loses because they were foolish enough to jump on the bandwagon to change servers. Karma works in wondrous ways.

Our Muscle is not of those who seek an easy win, but of those that seek a challenge.

Riiiight. By stacking a server and stomping servers that they severely outnumber.

There is no need for advance tactics against an enemy you can overpower with numbers. Just because you haven’t seen Kaineng try more advanced forms of attack does not mean they don’t know how to fight against an enemy who actually try’s.

Some servers just don’t require the effort.

Fantasy Scythes are designed a bit differently than real life scythes and war scythes(Which were mentioned earlier). The blades are generally closer to Kamas(Asian mini scythes) in shape, not as elongated before the curve, with more focus on the tip of that blade rather than the bottom edge.

Basically the idea is a bladed weapon that can pierce and slice with a horizontal swing, rather than a real scythe which uses the bottom of the blade to cut grass at an angle.

Honestly, I fear for Kaineng. By the time all of your bandwagoners and fairweather players realize the wall you are about to hit (whether in tier 3 or worse, 2), it will be after the free transfers are over. You will have a large number of players that are simply not ready to deal with the pressure you will face where you’re headed that no longer have the option to go to a lower tier server.

I’m not sure what will happen after that, but I do know it won’t be very pretty.

The Map chats usually consist of boredom complaints from Kaineng’s point of view. I find it evident that players seek a challenge and therefore the Free rider theory is pretty much debunked.

Free riding bandwagons don’t win WvW games, so they definitely won’t be missed when kaineng reaches even footing.

Primordus likely can but so far has chosen not to.

Though this is debatable as each elder dragon has different methods of corruption.

It’s possible that Primordus lacks the ability to properly infused living beings successfully, as his molten powers could be too intense. Recall that the other dragons have methods of infusion that wouldn’t normally destroy the body. For example, icebrood through exposure and accumulation of corrupt ice and Branded through being sprayed by crystal infused breath.

In this theory, the charr might have been successfully corrupted through the artificial transfusion.

Given game mechanics, their presence in many “Common ruin” maps is likely out budget, as well as being a game symbol for “Dart launcher”(so players universally know to travel past them with cautions).

Given that Seer ruins have been said to have been so eroded that no one actually cares to identify them, they’re the perfect lore insert to cover up pesky game mechanics (Like in WoW where they would relate a monster sharing the Hydra Model as being once a Hydra, despite concept art showing that they merely tacked the design on an existing model to save money).

Seers also look like Greys fused with the animated dress from Legend(1985), so creepy alien faces just seem to mesh with them.

Origin of The Pale Tree

in Lore

Posted by: Bard.7215

Bard.7215

The Pale tree is a frustrating, mysterious and unliked(Personally, by me) character

Although she’s revealed that her “Omnipotence” is essentially just the memories of all the fallen sylvari(Like a hideous Elder-brain consuming dead Mind Flayers in DnD), She always comes off as knowing far too much for any Sylvari’s life experience(at least in feeling) and puts on a feeling that she’s not giving complete answers.

She seems to do this under the excuse that The Dream is a separate entity from her and that she, like her children, are merely following it’s projections(Wyld Hunt). I understand that Gw2 has a somewhat corny/forced theme of Hope+Teamwork=Dead Elder Dragons, but come on… a mysterious dream like force of hope and justice educating an army of plant people against dragons out of sheer goodness? I know that the “Enemies so bad even nature has a bone to pick with them” trope isn’t uncommon in Fantasy games (Ancient Guardians in WoW and the like), but I’m just not buying the benevolencey of the dream.

The dream could not have been a blank slated collective unconscious before the sylvari, unless it was created and educated by something like the Maguuma shamans. So given current idea that it’s an information absorbing entity, Something had to have educated it about the elder dragons in order to get the pale tree to pop out plant babies who would then go on to live lives of anti-Elderdragondom. Now obviously the dream was un-educated about many aspects of the elderdragon and therefore required the firstborn to educate it. So whatever created or formed the dream was not that knowledgeable, but it sure got right to the logical point of learning about it’s enemies.

So the dream pre-sylvari obviously had an instincts of some kind that caused it to take the Elder dragons as a threat. Which brings us back to the pale tree.

I do not believe the Pale Tree and the Dream are separate entities, but that the Dream is essentially the conscious based womb of the Pale Tree that she projects as a separate entity so that her enemies do not target her. It would certainly make her less of a deity in the eyes of her children and instill a sort of god like entity above her that her children would trust, as it seems most mortal races who know about the tree see her as a fallible entity. In other words, it’s safer to act as a cardinal than act as a god.

The Dreams “Role setting” and systematic selection and organization of a goal hints far more that it’s a living being than that of a benevolent consciousness. It’s shown to have had a mission from the beginning which clearly knocks it down a notch into a more personal concept of agenda setting.

In the idea that the pale tree is an Elder Dragon or an Elder Dragons minion, It would make sense to why the pale tree is currently sided with the other mortal races. The Elder Dragons are enemies, and their rivalry is one of the many reasons they haven’t outright produced devastating attacks or genocidal methods in the years that they’ve been active. They seemingly fear each others power and have been slowly focusing on “side projects”. This excludes Zhiatan, who’s power requires mortals as materials more so than others. It is essentially a war between Elderdragons, with mortal materials ripe for the harvesting. In Mormadoths area of the “chess board”, it could be trying to use it’s spawn combined with mortal allies to kill off it’s most prominent Elderdragon rivals so that when it’s competition is destroyed, it can strike.

Granted, the two base builds you can choice from are effective, but it doesn’t make them fun or (IMO) make up for the lost personal choice.

Min Max elitism is pretty strong in a game that ignores DPS and intense stat calculations to play.

While the engineer is clearly bad in terms of universal viability, complaining about a fairly OP classes lack of build selections, as if Five Trait-lines don’t exist is stupid. It’s not like any of them are outrageously bad, on a guardians you could dump points at random and still own anything.

Horns or tiny head wings, they look like they’re a part of her, I guess my point was that deities having extra appendages doesn’t necessarily draw a line between ascended gods and gods that have always been(Assuming the concept is even part of the equation). While Dwayana is shown as the main baton passer and leader of humanity as well as the pantheon leader, this does nothing to support any claims that she has always held the power she currently possesses. It’s like Prometheus, the titan who arguably should have been the most worshiped thing according to his actions in Greek mythology, yet he was subjugated to torture and became nothing more than an afterthought in terms of the Olympians. benevolent to the fullest to humanity, yet not the center of power or human worship. Point being, benevolencey does not dictate power or status.

Given the various rights of succession seen amongst gods, They could be referring to the Power itself as predating humanity, not it’s hosts.

I’d like to think the Abbadon modeled his insect like face after a mask he originally wore before getting thrown into TROT. This is because some of his concept art shows him wearing a multi-eyed metallic mask, but still having a normal human face(as apparent of his exposed mouth and chin. Of course concept art means jack, but We never really got good image of him pre-fall and the multi-eyed mask seems to be one of his defining features.

As for Dwyana, and Malandruu, It might be true that both were never human due to having extra appendages, but indeed alterations of their bodies as a result of their inherent power is another possibility. Kormir has been depicted as having horns in her current sculpted incarnation(though whether or not it’s a head piece remains unseen) which she didn’t have prior.

The Albino Charr Phenomenon

I assume many charr are white for the same reason many humans are white. It’s likely that mostly white people play this game, and people like characters to look like them to a certain extent. I’ve only seen about 1 white charr that looks good, so I don’t like them on an aesthetic level. However, all the white charr make mine look more unique.

white people are beige… and light skin color(lack of UV blocking melanin) is an adaptation to Vitamin D deficient areas (Where sunlight would be the most efficient source of vitamin D) which might have come form the neanderthals (adapted to forested areas) which interbreed with kitten sapiens everywhere except central Africa.

Cat people are a different story and only insane people would try to mimic their own traits into a Cat man. White fur has no real use in most predators or prey outside of snowy environments so a white furred charr is probobally no different than a white tiger, which normally can’t survive long outside of captivity due to being too visible in their natural habitat(but since the charr are sapient and sentient this no longer matters in their species)

The most popular coloring of char I’ve witnessed is Black and White contrast designs, generally the tiger stripes or clouded leopard designs. This is likely because the Contrast makes the charr pop out and look more menacing than the natural coloring selections.

I did the same and made a very draconian looking char (Black and White stripes with the Deathwing style dragon horns and red eyes) named Tagar Bloodwell. But then I realized my design was way too common (also didn’t like Iron Legion) So I deleted him and made a Charr Warrior (Dubbed Volkhan the Onyx) with black and grey clouded leopard designs and the blunted horns(The only horns that don’t contrast with black fur). I’d say this design was superior.

Necromancer above Thief and Mesmer? Clearly this order is incorrect.

Speaking of which Konig, do you theorize that the gods were once humans who had taken on the divine mantle of godhood to lead their people (Rather than to have just created humans) through the mists out of world they once inhabited?

Given that the divine power can be transferred, and the Gods brought humanity through the mists, I feel this is a strong possibility.

If they truly desire to refine a pole melee weapon from the ones already existing(Spear), they should just chose a specific kind such as a Halberd.

Nobility/Civilized-ness of Monster Races?

Not to be offensive, but to have the Dredge somehow patterned after the Soviets was in bad taste and a racial slur to boot. No matter how you slice it. In GW1 EoN campaign, they were distinctive as their own race and didn’t seem patterned after any specific race.
This however, went a bit too far imho. They should have been kept distinctive.

The soviet union was not a race and the Dredge only resemble Slavic culture in naming.

the group of people you’re thinking of are known as Slavs(East Slavs to be precise) and most would not like to be called “Soviets”.

Human and Norn Romance?

Guild Wars 2 staff at some point mentioned that none of the playable races could cross breed. Although it’s debatable of interspecies romance occurs or not given on how you interpret the sexual freedoms of the sylvari.

That aside, there is in fact conflicting information regarding norn/human relations in GW1’s transition expansion. A Norn seem to imply that she may have Elonian ancestry ( the Norn, Danira, suggests this is the reason for her unusual susceptibility too the cold). This could have been a quest developer fowl up (Small details can be missed during development) or Danira herself was being satirical (Elonians being desert people who prefer hot climates and therefore she was using them to jokingly explain why she was so cold).
