actually this game will never make use of that much Vram, but you should have the 1gig anyway, its kinda a waste to buy a computer based on the needs of only one video game

its a problem where all the moving and such is kinda hard for norns in the more cramped spaces, and i don’t think it would be that hard to throw ontop of the zoom feature.

why I feel as if my performance isn’t as high as it should be on the Mac

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Carmine.9217

Carmine.9217

the problem is for optimization we have two points of failure.

-Anet has already said they aren’t doing any more optimization (atleast for windows) so if the problem doesn’t concern getting the same data as would come back from windows they might not do much.

-TransGaming, as this is a cider port they also play a role in updating the wrapper and making sure it plays to the best that mac has to offer (something they don’t have a great track record with).

I don’t think they just took our money and decided to leave us in the cold but when you consider there is no one point for the game to rest on it may stagnate foor a great period of time

External monitor on Macbook Pro

Carmine.9217

this most likely comes down to system settings you need to change your primary monitor system wide (probably) inorder to fix this,

Easy enough to try simply
Open system preferences and click displays
on one of the displays you will see a white bar, drag that bar to the other screen and it will become the primary.

Switching is quick and painless and will (probably) fix your problem.

Assuming you haven’t just tried switching to full screen with the game simply in the other screen which may also work

I get that its a lot of compiling to do inorder to update the mac client, but outside of standard GW updates when do we see the whole

(cider is updating please do not restart or turn off your computer until the process completes)

i know it maybe something that will come with bulk updates and full on additions in client size (im not gona cry if we end up at say 25gigs) but i gotta ask whats going on. can we get some status updates or something.

Maybe baby sized tweaks atleast?

blah blah blah blame them blah blah blame them, when it comes down to it if the dev’s want their product to not have problems then its up to them to make that happen.

Anet will have to learn to code around bad code from transgaming like web programers have to program around IE, if it comes down to trans gaming not trying hard enough then its up to NC soft to put their foot up transgaming’s but.

its not who to blame but how important supporting the mac really is to a game like this.

Testing again on windows (so i can re post with the quest name) but this is consistent and doesn’t bode well for stability

Petition For Optimization to continue

in Account & Technical Support

Carmine.9217

Hey you know what we have allot of between both this form and the new MAC support form (by the way thanks for the port even using cider rather than native atleast says you care) lots of people complaining about low FPS.

lets make a mega post, bellow is my story you don’t have to read it but every signature counts.

Here is the short version

I Feel that this game demands more than was advertised on the box by way of hardware, when they said they had done all the optimization they where going to It worries me because while beautiful and fun it would seem that FPS issues can get in the way of effective game play with the fact dodge is a basic requirement.

and while sub sampling is normally Ok, it would be better if sub sampling actually improved performance.

and the long version

I decided to compare some cards and talk about this a bit so first lets take a look at what cards we have here

http://hwbot.org/compare/videocards#1678_1,356_1,1444_1,781_1-17,29

what i have here is on either side (because I’m not sure how to reshape them)
we have the minimum spec cards as advertised both on the box and the website. and in the middle we have my card and one pore users card who currently cannot run the mac beta (but hey beta’s are always a bit bumpy right).

Now while I understand that optimization is no more than an enormous pain in the but it does come down to knowing where your bottle neck is.

here is another chart the two middle cards now mine and another user’s who has a superior card to mine.

http://hwbot.org/compare/videocards#1956_1,1678_1,781_1,356_1-17,29

now i admit i overclock but we in the middle there report similar performance (he assuming using default settings).

there is something to notice though here,

the one common difference is the memory bus size which understandably is where you would see the bottle neck only this game doesn’t seem to like using Vram infact from my own system monitoring I haven’t seen this game get above 80mb on average (after subtracking the 10-20 windows uses for aero)

So then whats the bottle neck.

From my observations and please not that while i am a programer i am not an expert on 3D and only have tangential knowledge gained from dabbling lightly and years of upgrading desktops for PC gaming until i switched to mac’s for good back in 2008, but it would seem that this game is mostly about video pipelining and processing without actual ram consumption.

The result meaning most of the stress for rending this game falls on the GPU without its aids, hence the 256mb requirement being more representative of the fact you just can’t get your hands on a 128mb video card anymore without devoting an undue amount of effort.

Here is the thing though, the minimum spec cards are clearly bellow standard in both processing power vertex shaders and the like.

I have a hard time believing this game would run on those specs desktop or other wise.

If the minimum is not the minimum then the bar must either be raised to represent a higher demand for PC requirement or the game must be optimized so that it takes grander advantage of the cards at its disposal thus providing better play across the board.

While normally having a minimum of 30FPS is unimportant in an mmo, when you make twitch reaction, dodge rolling, and generally a fast paced combat system. since all the gear in the world won’t protect you forever if all you do is stand still. Then FPS is a concern, one that players should not have to worry about when they have a card that supposedly outspecs the card you demand they have at the bare minimum.

Overclocking, The Basics

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Carmine.9217

Carmine.9217

So if your like me and running a card like the GT330m you probably can’t get 30fps without sub sampling and WvW is still a far off dream until you buy your next computer.

While overclocking for me has yet to yeild WvW performance that is actually playable when rolling with a large group you can still manage something.

WARNING BEFORE YOU CONTINUE

The act of overclocking can over heat your computer and if your computer does not have automatic shut offs for temperature you can damage your video card and potentially other components please take precautions so that you can enjoy your OC experience without running up a bill.

The Three Things you need for overclocking

  1. a GPU temp monitor
  2. drivers from your manufacturer
  3. patients

For the sake of a working example I will walk you through my overclocking steps which should generally work for overclocking NVIDIA cards.

  1. I procured a temperature monitoring gadget for windows 7 from HERE this is supposed to work across both ATI, and NVIDIA and was ideal for me as I play windowed
  2. I got a copy of NVIDIA Tools Specificially this one This is just what i needed for my card but you may want to get either CatalystControl Center (ATI) or MSI AFTERBURNER depending on your needs
  3. Hunted down the latest Beta Drivers for my video card 306.02

Once you have all of this update your video card drivers get your temperature monitor going and take note of

  • Defualt clock settings
  • Current Temp
  • Current load on your card

If your card is begging for mercy before you even launch your game now is a good time to turn off windows visual effects re-evaluate and maybe not take these remaining steps.

Now install or open up your overclocking tool.
Once inside you will see the sliders for overclocking your card and this is where you have to test stability, you can do this with a stability application such as FurMark but just oppening the game and letting the character screen load can also be used as a testing standard if you don’t mind a small amount of added risk.

HOW TO FIND YOUR OVERCLOCKING SETTINGS

The best way to do this is to slowly clock up at about 50mhz a time until you get decent stability results OR google and find out other people’s settings with similar or the same video card.

if you go about doing this on your own please keep this in mind 70c90c is the acceptable temperature range over 90 risks damage and over 100 all but guarantees it.

and it can be normal to have a temp hike when you affect new settings just don’t let it get over 90 (nvidia tools has a nice way to make your own warnings and alarms so you don’t have to keep your eyes on a temp gauge)

THIS IS NOT A DEFINITIVE GUIDE, always google things before doing something your not sure about and if your post is helpful I will incorporate it into this parent post

Can we get an ETA on sPvP tourney reward chests?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Carmine.9217

Carmine.9217

Tournament DB management and proper prise distrobution can be a nightmare in a game as big as this, as much as I would love to sit here and come to the defense of Anet explaining how difficult the job is, this seems like an error of over simplification, having tournament ranking host both unique character name and account name should suffice but if the problem, (which seems more likely to me) is actually in prize generation rather than making sure prizes are properly allocated, then this may be a problem that lingers, what Anet should do is tackle all of its small problems now so problems like the ones plaguing PVP can have the full dev team focus targeting them, rather than 1million little server bugs plus broken pvp.

I’d rather see PVP problems either be the first and only problem being solved or the last and most thoroughly solved.
