Feeling the same : friendlist empty, heart of mists ghost town, nothing to do.
Solo/duo queue’ing free tournaments just does not work and 8v8 zergfest can be fun in many ways but gets old fast when its the only gamemode you have access to.
Old downed state was a lot better once you knew how to use it.. Of course you could be fast stomped if they were smart, but otherwise you would be ok and very hard to stomp.
Now, although it should be better downed state, its just bugged or bad design.
The problem is once you land after mist form you have to wait 1 or 2 seconds until the downed skillbar shows up … and you get stomped w/o being able to do anything.
Whats the point of #2 skill rooting people if you cant root them before they are on top of you.

Except to shatter u need clones
Except u cant summon clones when u have no target
Except u are dead before summoning your clones
Except distortion last 1 to 3sec and do no dmg and u have no more illusions now
Except the thief will just re-stealth and re-apply burst attacks immediately
(my thief has 4 direct stealth sources, so I can fail and burst you 4x in a row… not even counting other skills, just autoattack/backstab)
Except that now the mesmer has all his defensives and shatter on cooldown
So yeah you can delay the unavoidable by a few seconds, but if the thief is not terribad, u die there.
Trying to justify that because of one broken class, all the other classes/players have to play full defensive to not die in 3 sec … Thats beyond stupidity.
As said so many times, the problem with thieves is not damage, the problem is because of broken game mechanics combined with some bug exploiting = unbalanced playfield.
So if Anet would fix a couple obvious gamebreaking bugs, then maybe we could play and see if things need adjustments.
At the moment, the game just revolve around exploiting bugs and game flaws to compensate other broken stuff…

Take phase retreat, it was perfect except rare bug into the ground….But last update changed it not sure why …

Mesmers are one of the few classes with no speed buff skill passive or active.
While other classes have access to said speed buff.. Mesmers have to open inventory and equip a kitten weapon… just to get runbuff then switch back to real weapon and really fast cause you dont wanna get stuck in pvp with focus weapon (I know Ive read some WvWers do like focus weapon. kthx)
Yeah switching weapon is kinda lame/unfriendly trick, if you dont macro it.
But maybe its just another clue at class balance issue.
Some classes need to use weird workaround to achieve same results as other classes that get it for free.
And runspeed in pvp = a must.
What you consider a weakness its actually what makes GS so powerful.
At long range, you get GS innate bonus .. for decent dps while spamming autoattack
But when you get closer range then the GS reveals its true nature : a great burst dmg weapon : below 600 range, bouncing attacks deal lot of damage and you get might stacks
Its one of the most versatile weapons… Innate dps bonus when you are too far away for bounced attacks, and all the burst / boons at shorter range.
Kitten if only chaos storm could be GS#5 instead of staff … LOL
The funny thing (or not) is that :
- Its an obvious bug that should have been fixed long ago (always been reported, yet never fixed)
- The only workaround is to build around other bugged trait, that are screwing other areas of the mesmer gameplay in order to have phantasm attack like they should.
Insta kill is bad and as I wrote in other threads :
→ The steal/cnd exploit as to go and we would see a lot less thief qq threads. And a lot less bug abusers ingame, ie they would roll another class or leave.

You dont need to kitten yourself into full backstab 14k hp build in order to be efficient thief … Yes its too tempting, but yes it can be countered … and guess what ?
Many and viable thief builds around, look at other trait lines, you can get nifty defense while keeping best burst dmg ingame :p
hint: 200 atk power wont change your backstab dmg that much
If you’re bad and rush people cause you feel so op then its your problem for being cc’d to death, no matter if you have 14k hp or 30k hp you would die same way.
Play a mesmer for once lol
Portal is 60 seconds, you know why ? so you can run somewhere, do something and port back .. whats the point of 30 sec portal… I put portal I run to next control point and oh wait nvm I port back before reaching destination.
The point of the mesmer portal is to being able to port back its not a fast travel skill, since you actually have to run by foot before porting back.
Using portal with repair kit shouldnt be allowed. Everyone agrees on that.
Shatter, phantasm .. whatever I always use the exact same utilities, and all defensive (stunbreak …) cause they are your only defense as a mesmer.
Like almost all other classes, once u played the class for a while there is only a very few utilities really worth it. So once you get your sweet 3 utilities you never change them…Beside occasional and situational battle setup.
If you need health bars then you need to go back to …. PvE
Seriously if you cant look, mouseover, or just blindlessly assist on the called target then you shouldnt go pvp :p
What do you need next ? UI scripts so you automatically switch target to lowest hp ennemy ? or stuff like that as seen in wow-clones so the game plays for you ?

Playing elem before and after patch, I did like the old downed state a lot better…
I know everyone complained about old downed state but once you knew how to use it people had to stomp me very fast or I would never get stomped :p
New downed state is like mesmer or rogues, u get away once then u immediately get stomped .. They switched 2 and 3 and changed cooldowns, I think…
With old downed state once I would pop mist then I would just chain mist for ever.. nowadays its not possible anymore… Or a lot harder, ie need the ennemy to help with cooldown lol.
In all games I play melee dps and indeed usually thief or warrior, in GW2 I didnt like them.
On my thief, I dont use backstab build, caltrop or other lame builds, just random stuff. The thing is I rarely play thief because of broken mechanics and autoaim skills. Makes you wonder where player skill is :p
Anyway, I always use the same utilities/elite:
- Hide in shadows, casting time but u get heal + stealth
- Blinding powder, instant stealth + blind
- Shadow Refuge, instant aoe long duration stealth + heal
- Quickness, which I only use for autoattack automatic kills when im out of initiative (never seen anything so lame but since I have a free utility slot ^^)
- And finally Thieves guild, cause you gotta be kitten to not use this iwin-without-fighting button
Of course I use D/D + Shortbow combo…
So I get another instant stealth with CnD (required for steal/cnd exploit) and I get stealth combos too but … 4 rather short cd stealth skills are usually more than enough.
Overall, thief damage is ok… And shouldnt have been nerfed to begin with /sigh too late
But so many out of jail cards + bugged stealth rendering + steal/cnd exploit + thief highest burst damage = w t f ??
If Anet would fix obvious gamebreaking bugs .. Maybe adjusting/balancing classes would make sense…
1/ fix teleport exploits
2/ fix stealth rendering or remove it temporarily

I think its a good idea.. Maybe not the best solution as it could promote zerging vs skill
Anyway I think it points out one problem : “sitting on the spot to win”.
As soon as you leave someone can instantly contest, you can’t interupt him and if/when you do so, the ennemy doesnt really have to start again, he just keeps contesting until he gets it.
So, lets say (maybe kitten example) bunker rush 3v1, kb everyone out, spot is contested… He does not have to win/kill anyone just contesting by standing there in bunker mode.
In Rift game domination map, you had to click a flag, like objects u use or activate in GW2, in order to contest/control a node.
It was taking something like 4seconds (channeled activation) to contest a node and indeed it could be interupted, then you would have to start over.
→ This promotes kill or chain cc ennemies so teammate can contest…
→ Defenders can interupt so versus good players its always the team that actually win the fight that gets the node.
Then you had to click it again for 4seconds to have the node on your side.
So lets say you kill defenders, node gets neutralised, then their roamers/ rest of team can also interupt you while you try to gain control of the node.
→ Again it promotes battle versus standing there to gain control.
Its actually more a domination game as you need to really control an area, not just stand on a single point while eventually being “dominated”.
Any class / build could control a point… Bunkers would obviously stand at flag, while ranged builds would climb nearby rock/stairs or glasscannon would hide and gank roamers .. things like that.
More group strategy, more classes can fulfill the control the point role, roaming and controlling an area actually makes sense, ie domination game … not just kitten camping.
Maybe its just a personal opinion, but I get more personal rewards for dominating an area than just standing inside that circle alone for 15 mins cause their roamer gave up after 2 failed attempts.
So most of time you see yourself camping a spot, eventually running to help your team nearby but porting/running back like a kitten cause u just can leave a spot alone.

I love how people “claim” they want strategic gameplay yet keep bashing the only element in Guild Wars which promotes strategic gameplay:
Downed state.
When a team comes back from a wipe due to clever Down State management… you got outclassed. Then you come to the forums and whine. Especially since the only thing keeping GW from being a DPS race is downed state. It’s fine.
I don’t say this often but when I do I mean it:

100% agree.
Downed state is fun and enables more strats than the usual dps assist chain zerg… Gives you another chance after getting beaten/focused either you get up by yourself, kill someone or get ressed by teammate.
And same goes when you see a teammate getting focused and downed, you gotta help him/protect him.
I agree too, their priority was polishing that haloween-money-event …
Same reason it was a rush to release the game with all those bugged traits and skills …
But you know its real-world economy : milking the cowstomers
What I think is not acceptable nowadays is the no communication from Anet, 1 month for a pvp blog which contained about nothing, no roadmap, no general picture, nothing on fixing the hundreds bugs per class. And we are still waiting to see anything.
Oh the game is fun, I do have fun. But sadly, I dont expect much anymore from Anet.
So from disapointment to new games being released every week, the player base will just shrink even more.
They can add any content / pvp stuff in 6 months if they want .. Most of us will not even know about GW2 news anymore, anyway.

I agree with main post, except on downed state which i think is a great idea and brings teamplay to another level.
Downed state also reduces the effectiveness of blindless dps assist chain … Cause downing an ennemy <> ennemy dead.
Therefore it gives different roles to different classes/builds.
Im glasscannon then Ill down ennemies easily but I might have troubles stomping them in the heat of the battle … Where my tank/support teammate has generally more tools to stomp people efficiently. And same deal when im downed they have tools to rez me easier then other archetypes.
If it was just killshot without downed state then teams would be 80% dps, 20% support and no real need for tank role, as seen in all other games before.

This just shows a failed elem, losing its target every mesmer trick, because he has autotarget option turned on, so it always switch target automatically to closest target, ie clones.
Dont target the clone, turn off autotarget and wait for real mesmer. Try it once.

And basically Stomping fast is the key to deal with downed state against ALL classes.
Stomp fast to force them use their #2 so their #3 wont get off cd before you stomp again.

1/ Stomp the mesmer fast to force him use his #2 skill (clone + stealth)
2/ Never ever switch target (be careful autotarget option need to be off)
3/ Just wait/healup/los illusions until you see the real mesmer pop out of stealth
4/ Stomp him for good before his #3 skill gets out of cd (phantasm rogue)
The Red Arrow will always stay on the real mesmer and only the real mesmer will have it …. IF you dont randomly switch target !
Remove conditions / complete heal etc .. all got cooldown you know ?
For example you could force them (sustained or condi or burst dmg) into cleansing and healing and now launch your deadly combo …

If you’re not a clueless player you should have realised that control the point game mode is bunker-build garden. So adapt your strategy or ignore tPvP.
Its even more funny in sPvP games. I usually see fights like 4v2 : 4 random versus guardian + squishy class … All my noobs self suicide on the guardian that charged them while the squishy is left untouched and running around freely.
Oh you can mark the squishy, they engaged the guardian and they gonna kill that kitten op class …. Or not lol
Now a good bunker will be a pain to kill (indeed when there are 2 of them at same point, classic tpvp setup) and might even be a good part for your team losing the match … but its more a problem of “control the point” game mode that make them shine.
They are efficient at what they are supposed to be efficient … Still some counters are available in game : condition dmg, boon removal, cc and high burst at right time, and not when everything is up …
Hint: fighting a bunker even more than other builds = keep looking at their buff bar.
Now, if you would stop complaining about burst builds and at same time complaining at bunkers, maybe the burst builds could kill your so kitten op bunker…
But you already forced ANet into the wrong route, nerf already happened and will keep going, there is no way back, adjusting, adjusting and more adjusting incoming.
So, burst is gonna get nerfed down more cause people can still not handle it.
So bunkers are gonna be even harder to kill.
Then what do u want to be destroyed ?

First open your eyes : Ranger and necro pets dont die at first breeze, they dont die when ennemy dies, they dont stand there doing nothing when the ennemy runs “a little” away (1200 range?) but they follow your ennemy no matter what, and they attack more frequently than once every 6 seconds.
Also they bring utility + dmg while mesmer pets are mostly to confuse you so u dont hit us .. and alternatively shatter food which indeed is a tradeoff since u suddently lose your “deceptive trick”.
Second and for your information,when your ennemy is downed he is NOT dead !!! omg look !!! he even attacks you and uses skills, albeit different ones.
Mesmer phantasm damage is far from being uber … thats why it was not nerfed they increased the cooldown to please the masses, but it does not change anything except that now you have to wait 2-4s more before spawning new batch of phantasms.
In the end, the nerf just pushed further the phantasm-build mesmers into the hide and spam that every new player was complaining “omg i cant see the real one and i die to kitten phantasms”
Finally and another L2P : I wish they would crit for 4k but its not the case when u see a 4k pop above your head (or ennemy its the same) its usually – except rogues – not due to a single attack but its the addition of all damage that occured in a short timeframe.
ie, mesmer hit for 4k every attack ? no no … phantasms + mesmer dmg = 4k yes indeed, and once every 6s for the phantasms contribution to overall dmg.
Hint: If you kill the phantasms as they pop up (direct dmg or random aoe) then no more phantasm for 15sec.. So kitten op

I agree there is penalty for not winning paid tournament, but it has nothing to do with rating and matchmaking.
The swapping to get buffs is not a big issue imo since u can only do it “out of combat”. It can probably be exploited to some extent but /shrug
On the other side, I like the flexibility, cause sometimes the fight dont go as expected : unusual build from your opponent or whatever, you might want to adjust your tactic, and sometimes this requires using different weapons/traits mid-game.

Without rating, you’re just grinding in the void. No idea how good or how bad you are compared to others .. kinda frustrating.
Of course it would help matching with appropriate opponents = more fun.

First, if you find the game unbalanced, once, just once, search for a tanky build for your class, or figure it out yourself…
Then setup this build and go spvp … Now go tank the wannabe burst builds and /laugh.
Oh you will still die to good ones, but I guess it will open your eyes as you will win 80% of your 1v1 with ease.
And you can do it with any class, no need to be uber bunker or whatever.
OK .. now for lol’ing .. Lets see how it was with old and more recent games :

The rogue class, called Agent, was a stealthed sniper oneshooting people from max range. When I didnt feel like sniping people, I could just mimic any other class and use their skills.
For analogy, I would still be a rogue but I could mimic a necro and use their skills and pets, or mimic a guardian ^^ Then I could just switch back to rogue anytime I wanted to. So kitten

Hunter/Archers .. Same deal 1 or 2-shoting people at max range + stealth for safety :p
Ok they got nerfed/destroyed fast
But there was fotm too, on midgard my group was of course a kittenist chain of zerker/savage with half the group as support/cc, aoe mez (immobilise+daze, long duration or until attacked) helps “assistchain-oneshooting 20 people one by one” while the rest of their zerg is reduced to watching in disbelief.
Depending on the era, you had always a couple class/combo becoming suddently completely op.
- Wow
Easy example again, I was undead rogue engineer … PvP at his greatest.
- perma stealth and highest burst ambush / backstab combo (same result as steal/cnd/backstab here)
- high sustained dps with semi spammable combo builder / combo finisher
- mez/stun/blind + engineer charm (take control of your opponent, yes for real lol you couldnt use his skills though, but the AI would use the skills randomly like a pet) …. you name it, all the cc you want, I could lock 3 people and kill them one by one. I mean I would do it in middle of their town and guards and whatever number of other players around…
Ahh Southshore town, camping flypath / tavern (I always found it funny how people go at the tavern to afk a few) ^^
- oh almost forgot .. immune fear
- vanish for when the kitten hits the fan (break cc+ insta stealth)
- insta full energy (initiative) for when you need to spam harder
- speed buff
and probably forgetting some ^^
Edited while checking spelling: Of course yes, I forgot the insta reset all rogue cooldowns, for the famous : ambush/backstab/energy/vanish/ambush/backstab/resetcooldown/rinse/repeat
4x steal/cnd/backstab combo while stealthing in and out .. you would only do that to people you dont like.
Another funny with the engineer charm helmet : from time to time we would face some rival guilds in the big zerg battleground, Alterac Valley ?
Once I went in middle of the zerg and charmed with my helmet one of their officers. Then I miraculously managed to escape alive with my new pet following me .. and all their zerg force trying to kill me / rescue their officer.
When the charm spell broke, I was kinda out of the ennemy zerg, and someone on TS yelled :
“Come on !! Come on !!! Someone take Over !!” (the charm spell was like 3 mins or 5 mins cooldown)
Promptly 2-3 engineer from my guild took over, chain charming him when the spell would break … So we slowly managed to escort our prisoner right in middle of our zerg force.

I reckon my champion combo was pretty deadly glasscannon, but who cares being a glasscannon when you aoe oneshoot people (it was bullrush + aoe 100blades basically mixing skills and temp buffs, except it was not in 10 hits, just bullrush and BAM!) and aoe fear if it does not fully work ? hehe
But many others were fun too, mage instagibbing anyone by pressing 1 key while being not so far from bunker status :p
I could go through all games like this and, but wanted to share a couple examples, only a couple op builds among many others.
TL/DR:
Believe me, in this game the balance is really not that bad.
Because rogue class style is all or nothing : They burst and kill OR they get killed.
If you dont give them high burst then they only have stealth so no one would play them but to spy/scout the ennemy.
You already have warrior as melee dps/support, where do you put the rogue if not assassin role ?
On on side you have SPvP.
SPvP is more team deathmatch, I play it like counter strike : insta queue, non stop map cycling …
You can still play objectives to win the map but its rarely the top priority : effort vs reward issue.
Now that you are aware of this, you see why most people play dps build in sPvP. Its not critical to hold a point.
You can still play/test defensive builds and its actually fun/challenging to survive the zerg.
On the other side of the spectrum you have tPvP.
In tPvP you have to win the map to get next round, so holding a point is critical. You actually want to hold2 for the entire game. So you are tailoring your team to do that = at least 2 “bunkers” and the rest is mix of damage/support builds (roamers).
Where it gets funny is that basically :
- All the qq against mesmer/rogues/warrior comes from sPvP games where their burst damage gets into the light
- All the qq against bunkers comes from tPvP where good bunkers (supported by good teamplay) rule the world.
“Burst is too good but at same time bunker is too good !!”
Same deal as in other games, nerfbat is the key.
Why nerfbat because you have no accurate data so its best to moderately although blindlessly nerf to please the masses . And so far they have been rather “light” on it, nerfing but not completely destroying.
Of course, player skill is never and can not be taken into account.
Forum feedback ? or ingame statistics ? both dont assess anything.
That being said, I think everyone should try to enjoy the game, pick the 2-3 the class/builds you like and have fun. Rushed class balance, ie nerfing, is never good.
Also, Id like more bug fixing rather than class balance.
Well, for glory farming you better rez first then stomp other guy… Otherwise you dont gain the 10 pts from ressing teammate
But the problem is the game client gives priority to stomping… I mean if you are on top of your downed teammate corpse and ennemy is “close enough” for stomp, then F key will stomp and not res. Of course you can try dbl clicking your teammate but ^^
You need to react fast :
- Press ‘H’
- Click ‘Return to the Mists’
- Pretend it never happened

Downing them is already hard enough but finishing them is almost impossible in 1v1 scenario, beside if you are rogue or mesmer … as usual i guess.

stability <> break stun, which breaks stun only, not the other effects, and it does not prevent it either.
Lack of stability is our weakness for sure… Only Mantra of Concentration and its only 2s of stability per charge with the 25s cooldown to reload it ^^
I dont care much about vulnerability, it all adds up so not that useless imo
What I dislike is the slow motion of staff and scepter attacks. Faster projectiles would make these 2 weapons a lot more enjoyable.
I do think the game needs more bug fixing and that really we should wait for class balance.
