Drops, loot, gear stats

I played WoW for 5+ years and was there during launch (day one). The loot system kept me engaged, it made exploration fun. I don’t bother exploring here because the mobs I find along the way are just trash along with the potential loot they hold. I don’t care for the annoying scouring/ jumping puzzles/ uncovering – none of that appeals to me. I want to tear through mob after mob and finally find some sweet shiny gear.

That’s one of the key drivers for most RPG’s, it’s the inevitable gear upgrade – the rare loot that makes you salivate and feel a sense of accomplishment. There are rare items in GW2, ascended I think they’re called – but I don’t give a flip, the boring @$$ hurdles you have to jump through just aren’t worth my time.

Even the dungeon “loot” is boring. For me, this is the one fatal flaw of this game. I would spend so much more time in GW2 if I had a ‘reason’ to keep coming back.

This game has many great aspects, but one of the key drivers in most loot driven games seems to be the worst part of this one. After killing a mob in pve I am never excited about searching through the loot – it’s always crap.

The loot hunt is horrible, and the gear-stat design makes it worse. This game would be perfect if it had a similar loot/gear stat system to WoW – not identical, but similar.

End rant

One aspect of this game that’s kept me from remaining a consistent player is the lack of loot. Since all of the items sets are similar and farming mobs in open world doesn’t offer a chance at something unique and rare (purple/orange drops in WoW) – I don’t feel compelled to kill endless hordes of X.

Similar to Pavlov’s dog, I need a reason to keep coming back… I just can’t find it in the current loot/reward system.

My MM build plus some thoughts

After leaving my Necro for an Ele I returned after the last major patch to find that it’s very close to being a great class (for my play-style). I was originally drawn to the class because of the minions, and like many others quickly found that build lacking. Since I’ve returned I’ve created a MM build that works in PVE and PVP. In PVE, I feel nearly indestructible – I rarely die, whether it’s a world event or in a dungeon. In PVP, I’ve become a complete nuisance, it takes the opposing faction a lifetime (slightly exaggerated) to bring me down.

I’ve geared my toon in the Carrion Exalted gear, socketed with Crest of the Soldier including my weapons. For my weapons I swap between Staff and either Axe + Dagger, or Scepter + Dagger depending on the situation. For my accessories I have items with the Power+Toughness+Vitality combination. Unbuffed I have around 29.5K health…

The few things I would like to see changed are the following; DS, and the ridiculous CDs on our slot skills. The reason I nearly ignore all other slot skills is because of their insane CD – compared to an Ele, they’re a lifetime long. Truthfully, most of them aren’t even that attractive to begin with, most of them are “meh”. Whereas on my Ele, it’s the oppositie, an overabundance of goodies to choose from… But again a great start would be to reduce the CDs – anything above 30 seconds just seems like a waste of space to me.

DS – is also just “meh”, yes I use it as a panic button or an extra life pool… But I think the original intention was to make it cool, it’s just not cool, there isn’t anything about it that has me salivating in anticipation of being able to use it. So if the developers could address the Slot Skills and DS – I think Necro will become a very formidable class.

I wanted to sincerely thank the developers of this amazing game for their hard work and authentic commitment – both to the game and to their player-base. I left Warcraft several years ago, and ever since I had been yearning to reclaim that sensation of awe and joy during the first few years of “vanilla” WoW. I had made several attempts at returning to the MMO space, but it seemed as though nothing could recreate that passion I once held for this genre. I had become leery of the claims made by MMO’s since so many (SWTOR) had been utter failures.

Well my passion has returned, I genuinely love GW2 – I even purchase gems on occasion as a thank you to your genius. I also wanted to concede that; I have learned that your changes to the game are very methodical and thought through – you do not have “knee-jerk reactions”… Which is very refreshing, since I had complained a few times regarding the state of my main (Necro), but I’m not complaining any longer (thanks for the buffs).

Sincerest gratitude,

Ceraphyn

PS. Also thank you for not charging us monthly to play this amazing work of art.

My alt

So after having such a rough time with my Necro, and balking at the notion of making an alt (never a fun experience in past games) – I caved and created a DD Ele.

The experience is vastly different than my Necro, first and foremost it doesn’t feel like a chore anymore, I’m actually enjoying the role rather than wishfully waiting for things to improve over time. Being an Ele is so dynamic, it really makes me realize how static the Necro is in comparison. I don’t feel as though I’m trudging along at a snails pace – I actually feel useful and powerful, which makes the experience so much more enjoyable.

I’m also surprised at how useful and plentiful the play-style options are, and how every skill is viable and fun, instead of tedious and useless. From this experience I feel as though I wasted my time creating a Necro, I even took time off of GW because I had become bored… I realize that things could have been different had I selected and Ele instead. Oh well – I have abandoned my Necro in favor of the Ele, I am truly enjoying the game now.

I get that you are disliking the bugs that a necro has, but as for bad in pve, I don’t see it. My build works perfectly in pve. the skills do 98% of what they are supposed to do and I’m sometimes able to take down champions myself(other times kite them until one other person comes along).

Before you say anything, My necro is lvl 80, geared out in mostly rare/exotic gear, is a semi-hard condition spread necro focused on bleed, poison and weakness spreading as well as kiting. My build consists of a 10/20/10/20/10 trait distribution and weapon sets of staff/scepter+warhorn.

Minion master was only good for the early levels, if that’s your build you should look into becoming a condition-mancer. Not assuming you are, just a friendly suggestion.

If you want the full build I can provide it.

Being pigeon-holed into a single play style isn’t “fun”, it’s a requirement… For a game that “eliminated” the traditional roles (healer, dealer, warrior) – it makes the least amount of sense to force (viable) play styles.

I know this sounds like an over dramatized whine, but I’m a necro, and this last patch is basically the last one I can take. Our class has been made completely useless in PvE, and we still lack the actual fixes/buffs we desperately need.

I’ve spent way too much time and effort on my necro as my main character and it is completely depressing. So please, let us class swap (one time only) for 800-1000 gems or something like that.

I’m being completely honest, I would like to continue enjoying the game, but I don’t want my months of effort gone completely to waste.

I completely agree – I am fed up and feel cheated, please allow me to swap classes, or I’ll have to move onto something else… It’s no fun feeling as if I/we picked the loser class (when compared to most others (Mesmer)).

Balance Druid all over again... (Rant)

I’m having a bad case of deja-vu, I had signed onto WoW during launch – for some reason I was drawn to the balance druid class. Although I wanted to play a caster druid- the game would only allow me to play a healer… Balance druids were a mess (probably still are), it made playing the game painful, especially in pvp – druids were freebies.

It’s the same feeling all over again, I wanted to play a minion Necro – turns out I can only play something called a condition Necro if I want any sense of viability (lame). I wish I had the time/patience to level alts, but I have been playing this game since launch and I just reached 80. It’s a beautiful game, I had some fun leveling – but now that I’m 80, I realize how severely gimped this class really is (particularly as a MM). I thought the concept was not to be pigeon-holed into archetypes – I thought all classes would be adaptable to every situation; PvE, PvP, etc (nearly) equally. Why is it taking so long to apply some serious changes to this class? The minions are a joke, the vast majority of skills/abilities are severely limited due to extreme CDs or they are just plain useless.

I don’t want to waste more time on a useless class – one that will remain so for the duration of its existence as I did in WoW… I’m very frustrated, I feel slightly cheated.

Necro feels underwhelming

I have a level 45 necro and I’m feeling somewhat bored with it… It feels like a balance druid from vanilla WoW (pre-moonkin). There aren’t any abilities that make me feel powerful – just meh. The slot skills are boring, I’m not a fan of “wells” or signets, and the cool downs are ridiculously long.

The minions are neat – but annoying at the same time, it would be nice if they all reset to full health after each fight (not just the golem)… I never played GW1, so I’m not certain how it plays lore-wise… I’m just wondering whether there are any plans to spice things up for this class, add some more oomph and flashier abilities (cooler looking spell effects)?

I don’t have the time/patience to restart with another class – I’m hoping that some changes are implemented soon before I totally lose interest.

Is anyone else feeling this way.

*I want to add an apology in advance, I haven’t read any other posts on this forum, it’s my first time here – not certain if something along these lines have already been mentioned.
