Strange but effective necro builds

I don’t know my about the syphon complaints, PvE side anyways. I can usually run amuck and pull 8+ mobs and finish at close to full health. I am hoping they do some tweaking of it though so that I can see some similar results in PvP when the hits come a lot faster and quickly outpace the syphoning.

Or you could just take it on for the challenge. I drop everything if someone shouts out group challenge in map, particularly if there is a champ.

Hell I take great pleasure in taking on group events, I’ll even solo them. Gives a great sense of accomplishment to take down a champion without any sort of assistance. I judge my build effectiveness based on this.

As others have also mentioned, it also leads to a greater array of coinage from loots from the many trash mobs that are associated with some. Or stand alone champs that are just fun to beat on anyways.

Veterans just don’t pose a threat.

weakness has been awesome for PvE. I can take down hordes of foes at a time combining it with syphoning.

I just wish weakness would be more reliable PvP. High power builds typically have high precision making it useless, and condition builds laugh at it since most of the damage is front loaded into the bleeds and conditions.

It can do attrition beautifully keeping weakness up permanently on all foes around you, but currently only for half the game modes are affected by it as the min max builds of PvP ignore the condition.

I honestly don’t know why people are complaining about them spreading out first. Since they are almost all melee they gather themselves back together right quick. If you spot a ranged holo, park yourself by it and the rest will come to you.

You don’t need the Guardians pull, because they are dumb AI they pull themselves.

I like it, my necro was nuking them down before they even stepped off the pad.

Now I mass AoE nuke them after the 2 secs it takes them to wander.

I like the change as well to the HP, it means I have a few extra secs to join the fray and get my mass tag on.

I’ve always been a huge fan of life stealing builds in GW1, so I’d like to see a build for GW2 that has a high survivability. I wonder, if you do have to really get in close, to get as many hits in as you can… should you be speccing in crits (for more healing), or in toughness (so you take less damage as well)?

Run knights and cavalier. They both rock precision AND toughness.

knights third stat is power, cavalier being crit damage.

cavalier is toughness>power=crit damage
And for PvE, always go full zerker. Especially in high lvl fotm.

meh close enough.

I still argue though that toughness and weakness is what really maximizes syphon builds. The more mitigation you have the better your syphons will be able to keep you topped up and going strong.

if you go zerkers you might as well ditch syphon and focus on power and damage. Its healing will not keep up with the damage a zerker necro takes, especially since necro lacks a lot of the survival mechanics other zerker classes bring, epic damage being a start.

I run something similar except i put more focus on critting for syphoning and for Debuffs

10/30/0/20/10

mixture of knights and cavaliers gear. valkyrie weapons.

Reason I focused on crit was the 30 in curses debuffs enemies with weakness on crits. Which if you build right you are doing an insane amount via AoE to really share it.

Weakness is huge if you are looking at boosting your parties survivability.

Corrosive Poison Cloud is also great for sharing weakness AoE style.

I ditched staff for axe and its retaliation to emphasize my builds purpose of taking a beating while staying on its feat (well at least as best as the pinball necro can).

My build focuses more on the survivability and anchoring, party support comes via debuffs. We have a guardian who does the majority of team cleansing and the like.

Utilities and PvE

If we are talking PvE, I have enjoyed Corrosive Poison Cloud. It is effective at what it does, stacking up weakness, probably one of the most useful conditions in PvE. It greatly reduces the incoming damage and since AI is stupid and won’t avoid circles you can dance in the middle of it all day. I rock a MH Dagger so that all my enemies have to come to the middle of my bubble.

I simply wish I had more options underwater for my syphon build. Everything underwater is geared toward minion or conditions.

Underwater weapons on necro are both incredibly powerful with power builds. And the vampiric swarm scales with healing power. Combine that with life siphon traits, you get really strong burst heal because of the double or triple heals on proc.

I realize with the spear, spear is fricken awesome. I rock my spear all day long with its pulls and death roll of fricken doom. Its the utilities that we are left with underwater, the grumble of the OP topic and header. They are completely counter intuitive to my playstyle and I only get half the sustaining power my build gets on land without all my access to weakness.

I love my necro weapons, except trident, I have yet to get any real enjoyment out of the trident.

The tridents damage on a beserker build is insane aswell. The auto attack isnt amazing but its still pretty strong and a small aoe. The #2 hits pretty hard. But the real damage dealer is the #5, it does huge aoe damage while applying vuln and chill to enemies around you. The damage is insane.

so going back through wiki, I have discovered the source of my hatred for trident, I misunderstood the skills. Mostly its my fault because I didn’t bother reading the discriptions. I assumed like other classes the trident was a ranged caster. The only thing truly ranged is the auto. I will definately have to change up my rotation to incorporate more staff action.

I still stand by my resentment that a good chunk of the utilities I typically use are not possible underwater.

I forget where I was but it dealt with centuar, there was a group of 20 of them all cluttered around a rock dog fight. I figured what the hell, I already have the heart might as well see what happens.

(Syphon Build) So I pop my Locust Swarm and run right into the middle drop my well of suffering as they all charge in, pop axe #3 for retaliation and then hop into DS4 to drain a bunch before I get chain knocked down. when I resurface I drop corrosive poison cloud for AoE weakness spam dagger #4 to drop weakness and then hop into plague to blind spam. By now with all my AoEs I’ve kitten ed everything off and they’ve all charged in. When plague finished I hopped back into DS for #4 and finished the lot of them. Without using heals I finished off all the mobs at full health thanks to the brilliant amount of syphoning at work amongst all my AoE.

I was already enjoying my necro, but after the feat I was sold, nothing feels as immortal as my Necro does.

The reason noone wants a ranger is because its like playing with a group of 4. Rangers in full beserker do terrible damage. Yeah sure they can survive but they really are a hindrance. Pets cause problems on jade maw and lupi in arah. Plus they cause aggro problems aswell.

Siphon Viability?

I’ve had good results with it in PvE. I use Axe/Horn Dagger/Dagger and swap constantly between the two.

The big thing is lining up your channels as they are major sources for your vampirism, as well as clustering mobs to be simultaniously struck by your AoEs. Every hit procs it.

My biggest suggestion would be to use the debuff weakness as much as possible. Mitigation multiplies the effectiveness of siphoning since you have less damage coming in to heal up. That being said, I also suggest high toughness to reduce damage. I rock mostly knights gear with some Valkyrie interspersed for health and crit power.

It is very much an attrition build so plan your fights accordingly.

If you are looking for AoE fun, Axe 3 (retaliation) warhorn 5, drop well of suffering, DS 4… if anything is left standing it was probably a champ. Swap to dagger and single target gank since it will be the only thing left standing.

I wouldn’t mind more multi-target besides staff, but I think axe would be most like candidate as far as being in sink with other classes axes. Dagger has always been single target across the classes.

My typical “combo” is Warhorn 5, Well of Suffering and Corruption, then Life Transfer.

I guess what I should be saying is. I would like a melee cleaving weapon, but since it doesnt look like any professions will get new weapons until waaaay down the road (if ever), I am just trying to find a way for Necromancers to get on the “LFG only Zerker Warrior ping gear” level, without making them over-the-top broken.

So, since it seems people didn’t catch this detail the first time I said it: only Necrotic Slash. Just the first move in the auto-attack chain. This would avoid pumping up life-force that you get from Necrotic Stab and Bite (2nd and 3rd in chain).

I really don’t think this would be too broken. With Wars being able to Cleave with Hundred Blades and every auto-attack. Their DPS still comes close to necro single target, and if you add in extra targets, the total damage is far greater.

All is well, I still think if a weapon were to get a cleave/cone it would be the axe, my vote. Many Necros already use dagger because of its great damage potential, the axe seems to be the current ugly poster child, especially since its auto attack is a little underwhelming damage wise. If it were to be turned into a frontal cleavy 3 target cone the damage would be fine as it could now be hitting multiple targets making up for it.

Daggers are already pretty strong as it is. I just want to see the Axe get some more use instead of a quick battery fill and retaliation shield before I swap back to my dagger.

Warrior: Mostly Damage, some party support if you trait
Mesmer: Insane sebterfuge with clones
Guardian: boon spam +1
Elementalist: boon spam and insane skill diversity across elements
Engineer: versatility across kits and toolbelt.
Ranger: Two characters for the price of one
Necromancer: overcloak deathshroud for extra durability
Thief: many claim invisiblity, but its really initiative system replacing weapon CDs, unlimited combo potential.

Not going to go into builds as all classes can pull of variants of tank, dps, condition etc. Some classes do some builds better than others. But if you are looking at what makes each class unique the above is it.

Full of Life trait idea?

in Necromancer

Posted by: DaisyRogers.6837

DaisyRogers.6837

I think the idea is fine as it is.

But just compare it to Metaphysical Rejuvenation.

The same but with twice the duration. On a class with lots and lots of ways to avoid the damage in the first place. And no invul that blocks the regeneration (like our DS).

Since necro is supposed to facetank everything (and therefore needs a lot more ways to regain HP/LF than other classes), either the duration or the CD needs a huge buff. 15secs duration would be appropriate.

In my opinion I would prefer a flat regeneration ticker whenever I am missing health over a 15 second regeneration boon when my health reaches 90%. Not every Necromancer bothers with healing power. In the long run since we are attrition fighters it would outshine that trait because what your suggesting only activates at 90% hp.

What if in a battle your hp never climbs back up to 90%? The duel has gone at least 30 seconds or more? With 40 hp per second that is 400 hp per 10 seconds and 1,200 hp in 30 seconds. The long run is what the idea in my opinion should be based around as attrition fighters.

How i thought these traits work:
If hit and under 90% life, it activates (when its off cooldown).

if thats not how it works then youre right, flat regen would be better (and would make that trait, as it is now, even worse)

I believe it procs when you first hit 90% and if it is a long drawn out battle it will go off again as long you are still below 90%, that is when the internal cooldown finishes.

Run CPC with offhand dagger. Dagger 4 allows you to instantly toss the weakness onto the opponent to jump start the cripple stacking. Or save it for when you are about to use consume conditions for extra healing. Just time it.

I love the whole I hurt you while hurting me aspect of many of the necro abilities. Because often enough they can be combo’d and dropped on an enemy, eaten for more healing, or convert into boons.

I had a pretty easy time using a dagger dagger vampiric build. I used AoE weakness from DS Dagger 5 and corrosive poison cloud. Well of Suffering is awesome too.

the weakness offsets incoming damage allowing the vampiric traits to really shine.

Not as effective PvP because people are either high precision nullifying weakness, or condition heavy, weakness is ignored. Dagger 4 clears up the condition issue easy enough. Kind of amusing sending large stacks of confusion or bleeds back to giver.

DS5 focus should not be a new condition.

in Necromancer

Posted by: DaisyRogers.6837

DaisyRogers.6837

I want it to be a condition because DS feels really weak if you’re a condition build with no power.

Personally I wish they would simply have a variety of skills available for DS including auto (could be between current and underwater).

You swap out the rest like utilities to match the build you are looking for, attrition/survival heavy, condition, dps, etc. Sort of like the way toolbelt works except we can only access it within DS. Hell, keep us limited to 4 skills works fine now. Just allow us to customize it to fit more our build. For UI think of the Pet Menu for rangers to swap pets.

Or just make two default DS loadouts that you can swap between. Currently the only thing I use it for is to pop in, grab fury and drop AoE weakness, AoE storm, and then pop out. Maybe fear if I am saving someone from a stomp. Most of the time I use it for a glorified recharbable overcloak (which works awesome at anyrate).

1. Being able to permanently apply weakness AoE style. I know precision builds laugh it off but it is epic when used in PvE to shrug off a ton of damage. I make my entire adventure parties life much easier. Also significantly boosts the effectiveness of all my vampirism traits food and sigils.

2. Laughing at thieves in WvW who attempted to gank my thinking I was a D/D ele just to see their burst wiff on the wisps of DS and then watch my team decend upon the poor glass kitten.

3. Picking up 20 stacks of bleeds or a bunch of stacks of confusion (mesmer) just to dump it back on to the source with Dagger 4 (love this skill). Nobody ever sees it coming.

4. Jumping off of stupid high places to DS shrug the damage.

5. DS, as kitteny as it is sometimes, it is a really handy overcloak that can be tricked out with lots of utility outside of just omnom burst or cover my kitten while I am knocked down or stun locked.

A necro should counter absolutely everything a guardian and a elementalist stands for. Guardian stands for buffs and walls? Necro must be able to debuff 3 guardians at once and disable that wall. Elementalists stands for speed, heal and nukes? Necro must be able to nullify any speed from 3 elementalists, reduce any heal from 3 elementalists and interrupt any nukes from 3 elementalists.

Necros are by far king of the debuffs. poison cloud for stacking weakness, weakness upon entering DS, weakness on D off hand, blinds, etc. Well of suffering and you get fast stacks of vulnerability, Necros are pretty awesome at tossing out the debuffs you are hoping for to counter buffs, not to mention a well that literally eats the kitten buffs.

reducing healing effectiveness of an ele? poison, we’ve got a score of methods for applying it not to mention all the chill we can also toss around to end mobility (multiple sources too to override cleanses).

If that is not enough, plague form it up, you can literally do all the above and be the biggest asset to your team in a group fight.

Out of all classes I have played so far, necro has offered me the greatest debuff potential weakness/vulnerabilty/poison/blind as well as CC chill/fear/cripple. And I can apply the debuffs regularly and keep some of them permanently stacked.

Game gets easier and easier each character I create. Hardest thing for me to learn was not standing still. I got used to typicaly MMO skill rotation play until enemy is down.

Does not exist in this game, only works one on one with a single trash mob.

I failed hardcore my first character, thief. tried guardian, engineer, warrior up to 64. Wasn’t until I tried Ranger and started to really look at trait lines and synergy before I took off in the game. There are a lot of online build generators to theorycraft with.

Try thief SB, you can combo 4 and 2 to create AoE weakness debuff 50% chance to do 50% damage. By far one of the most underrated conditions in the game. My D/D syphon necro uses it to maximum potential to outheal incoming damage.

On cover the game looks stupid simple with short skill bar and solo potential everybody does everything playstyle (lack of trinity, good thing IMO) but the more I play I find more and more combos, skill rotations, and strategies to overcome obstacles and enemies.

also beginning content is pretty cheasy and things drop in about one or two auto attack chains. It is a lot of training wheels content to get used to class mechanics to prepare you for latter game. Difficult enough to force you to dodge roll or whatever.

Most MMOs that I lose interest in have the cool stories and that winds up being the only thing that interests me, content never proves to be a challenge. Once I get bored with the story I move on. This, I’ve gotten bored with the story but I’ve yet to get bored running around Tyria with my small guild, there is always challenging content that threatens to plaster me if I make a mistake.

Solo’ing champs also gives me great pleasure.

Oooo, can’t forget, watching a guardian, d/d ele or other survival spec get their butts handed to them by a boss and then I continue for another 5 minutes finishing off the boss solo style and then raising the masters of survival. I will say this, the aggro system in this game is pretty predictable and tank players can still tank. I’ve got a ranger who can keep aggro quite well and stand in it.

Guardian anchor build, what that is, I’ve seen work marvelously as well in that regards. Some classes do better than others. Almost any class can tank damage with many different ways to mitigate.

DPS still DPS, great. Obviously some classes can pull it off better.

Heal, no as much group healing in this game but there are still classes like necro, Ranger, and ele who do group heal. Other classes like warrior and mesmer can be traited to share minor healing. The closest thing in this game though is support and boon sharing which there are a lot of different ways to do it.

What i love about this game is the fact is that any class can pull off any part of the trinity. There will always be QQ because one class is better at sharing this boon than another. But that exists for any MMO.

Trinity exists, its just this game is depenedent upon it survive content.

The strong point of the sceptor is its clone regeneration on auto chain. Combined with rolls and clones will be suiciding to make new ones. Clone death traits shine with it. Lots of CC capability with the weapon set with my sword/torch for quick BF spike or defensive evasion.

Mesmer I am running Sceptor/Sword Sword/Torch suicide clone build 10/20/10/0/30. I have a lot of CC and weakness support I can provide to dungeon runs allowing our Guardian Anchor to stand better and everyone else to get out of the way. And in PvP I always have crap to shatter, its awesome. The constant blocking and prestiging really kittens people in PvP too. Add that to my invisibility utilities and blink and it becomes quite trollish.

knight and valkyrie mixed armor, valkyrie weapons, and knight jewelry to give myself some tankability since i spend a lot of time close up to maximize the clone suicide potential.

How is scepter better?

The problem with scepter #1 damage is it works like the GS in reverse. The closer you are the faster you attack the more damage you do… since it waits for the shots to land before shooting another. This is very weird for a ranged weapon.

The #3 wasn’t the problem… it was the #1 & #2 (and the do nothing clones). While the confusion being able to hit 5 targets is strong, it doesn’t make up for the rest of the weapon being rubbish.

That being said zomg gs auto attack + sigil of fire into a group or shooting people when they are ressing downed… SO STRONG xD

I usually fight with the scepter at the 300-600 range. Closer the better. The more close range fight you play the more your clone death traits will actually land as you are kiting your opponent into your clones. In bonus you generate clones faster to further increase rate.

Scepter survivability is pretty decent as well. Traited for death you can permanently stack cripple on opponents making it fairly easy to keep oppenents in the 300-600 range and no close, and when they do get close you have a walloping block. Off hand sword to go with it and you now have two.

scepter #3 also works better at closer range as opponents have less time to respond. Confusion makes a lovely skill denial.

also, traited for death you can keep weakness up fairly constantly. Personally this is probably one of my favorite defensive debuffs, 50% chance at 50% damage is epic for shrugging off blows.

As you can see though, scepter really only becomes amazing when it is traited.

it makes me lol when a ranger wants to do a dungeon

like what are you gonna do other than get downed and attempt to kite

You’ve never done a dungeon with my ranger then. My Pets do a significant amount of aggro soak.

My ranger also provides a good amount of support utility with a pulsing condition cleanse and protection via a well placed spirit (key is placement). I also provide a ton of AoE healing via elite spirit and can single handly rescue a close party wipe via same spirit.

I can keep semi permanent fury up via horn and healing (runes).

And since I am tanky as hell, no my ranger is usually the last to go down if we screwed it up.

And My pets do pretty decent dps.

You simply haven’t run dungeons with decent rangers.

I could say the same about the LOL zerker warriors dropping seconds into a fight, but I also know that a warrior played well is a huge benefit.

I pulled it off without a hitch way back on my Ranger and Warrior. Sometime after undead update I think is when it broke and became stupid hard. My mesmer couldn’t pull it off. Not enough burst or sustainability. Especially in the AoE department.

I wound up recruiting 4 guildies to help me blow through it the third time.

As others have mentioned, you need to focus the veterans, they are the ones that spawn minions.

Pulling off the impossible.

Ranger,

just rock out the horn and shout some encouraging words to your pet.

no physical blows necessary.

If guildwars 2 had monthly fee

The Fact that it was just a one time fee, is why it is still the one game I am still playing.

So much easier to enjoy a game when I don’t feel forced to play my moneys worth.

This doesn’t make sense from a logical stand point, 50 cents a day is next to nothing when most hobbies cost thousands of dollars.

If someone is that worried about getting their money’s worth out of 50 cents every day, I would say they should be trying to find a job rather than playing a game anyway.

Just my opinion of course, before someone takes this seriously.

one it would work that way except for the fact that you aren’t bleed out at 50c a day, but for most games 15-30 dollars a month. Or if you want a discount even a larger chunk every couple of months. We are talking burst damage to the bank account versus sustained which is a lot harder to compensate for.

two, I do have a job, I also have a family and a bills to contend with. And then there is food, and the rest of the daily necesities. Fuel, shouldn’t forget about fuel,

three, time. I work 50-60 hours a week. That is just what my occupation intales from me. That is outside of the time that I spend with my family, and time that I must set aside each day for physical fitness (required by my other occupation as an army reservist). So in turn what I have left is monday which is guild night. and if I am lucky 1-2 other hour long sessions a week. Thus we are no longer looking at 50c a day but much more.

It would be nice if this game would be my only expense in life but it is not. And yes, I did take this seriously since your comment was pointed at my “lazy” kitten. Perspective is a kitten some times.

Decoy Clone....

it works for its primary purpose of target dropping, and gap making/ repositioning.

The agg drop is a bit lame but honestly if you didn’t use the stealth time to make some space you used it wrong.

only time it fails completely is if I failed my timing and used it at the start of a channeled skill.

I ran mesmer, smaller details means its harder to pick out the real deal at glance when i am stealthing in between my clones.

Plus I wanted the t3 armor… even with the screwed up helmet it still looks pretty epic.

I use magi-tech to generate my clones and phantasms

if you want a troll weapon set up sceptor/sword, sword/torch. Lots of mitigation plus invisibility.

As others have mentioned, the sword auto is more about utility then damage. It sets you up by stripping away protection or regen and stacking invulnerability.

Your main burst will come off of the blurred frenzy, or off hand iSwordsman. Shatters also will be packing the punch which the weapon is good for setting up because when you are in melee range with your clones it gives your target less time to respond.

Mesmer is very much about float like a butterfly still like a bee. Bounce in and out to attack, dodge about, blink, go invisible.

Aside from thief, and ele, mesmers are among the best at in combat mobility. Use it. All of our sword abilities, and off hands to pair with it support it.
