Why did they call this game "casual "

Dragonax.6487

It’s the most grindy game I’ ever played. Almost everything top level in this game take either massive luck, lot of money or massive amount of time to get. And the most terrible thing is almost none of those require any amount of skill.

Legendary probably takes like 2 years to get unless you are either extremely lucky, play > 10 hours a day , or pay $500. Even Ascended would take like 1-2 months for casual players , 3-4 months for the armor sets. And now with HoT out, even more grind are needed just to unlock the new specializations (which should be unlocked freely after purchase ).

When I compared it with a truly casual game like Warframe for ex: It took me 3 weeks to obtain top level gears. After 5 weeks, with a bit of luck and trading skills, I was able to get Frost Prime, which was by far the rarest, most valuable piece of gear in the game at that time, matched only by some of the (really good ) stuffs that no longer drop for several years. That’s what I would call Casual/

Ranger or Guardian: Best DPS In PvE?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

To compare the 2, Ranger provide slightly better DPS but far worse group support.

For PvE, Guardian is among the top 2 best class, beside Elementalist. Ranger is in the bottom 3 classes beside Necro and Engi.

If you want sheer DPS, go Ele or Thief, Ele provides a bit more DPS and have more utility. Thief has the group stealth mechanic that can be very useful in some dungeon.

[Suggestion] Legendary Weapon Sigils Switching

Dragonax.6487

The argument has nothing to do with cost. As explained earlier, the cost of either a legendary vs multiple ascended is moot as it’s a sunk cost, only the opportunity cost is a consideration.

I’ll try to explain as simply as possible…

Take the simplest base case:
* Player A has Bolt
* Player B forges an Ascended Sword

Any sword player B forges, player A can equal.

Now player B equips a Sigil of Force.
Player A must equip a Sigil of Force to maintain equality.

If player B equips a new sigil, they must pay a cost.
If player A also equips the new sigil, they pay the same cost.

Player B now wants to go back to Sigil of Force – they pay a cost.
Player A must also now do so.

If player A does not have to pay this cost, an economic disparity is created. The Legendary is no longer on par with the Ascended, thus breaking Anet’s intent.

So, you say, Player B can create another Ascended, or any number more Ascended at a lower cost than what Player A spent. Again, cost is not a consideration as the choice is made up front whether to create n Ascended weapons, or 1 Legendary. Once that decision is made cost is no longer a consideration as it’s sunk.

Creating either a Legendary or an Ascended weapon will result in two equivalent weapons. Two ascended weapons > 1 Legendary, but the Legendary will be the equivalent of any one of those Ascended. (edit: To clarify, a player equipping two ascended swords, will be “better off” than the player equipping a single Bolt. No one would argue that Bolt should be the equivalent of two Ascended swords because it cost x amount more to create.)

The simple fact is that as it now stand at any time a Legendary is the equivalent of any other similar Ascended weapon. Allowing sigil swapping at no cost creates a disparity of the Legendary over the Ascended item. This is not the intent.

-This argument has everything to do with cost. Something that cost 40 times more should naturally be stronger or better. A legendary is only supposed to be the equivalent of Ascended in term of stats, to think that it should be equivalent in every department is Wrong. As long as legendary are still far more expensive than ascended, nobody but extreme jealous people would agree with you, including Anet (the fact that they make the stat selection feature already showing that, Legendary should always be the best, if not in stat, then in other ways )

-Legendaries will always be on par with the best weapon true, but the best weapon, no matter what it is, will always be much cheaper than legendary as long as it can be crafted. Not to mention the possibility that Ascended will be the permanent top tier.

Now let talk about your comparison

-Player A has a Bolt
-Player B has an Ascended Sword

is fundamentally unreasonable from the very start. A Bolt should never be compared with an Ascended Sword, it should be far superior whether it’s about the cost or the status.

Let make it a little more equal shall we:
-Player A has a Legendary (with the Sigil swapping feature )
-Player B has 40 Ascended Weapons

Player A purchases 40 Sigils and apply to his Bolt, to customize his build
Player B purchases 40 Sigils, and apply to his 40 Ascended weapons

Player A benefits:
-Space saving ( Super important )

-Don’t have to reach inventory or Bank when needing to change builds, only double click ( Big convenient bonus )

-Beautiful skin with aura

Player B benefits:

-Have full top tier weapon set at hand, main hand, off hand, swapping weapons, water weapons ( Actually super important ), meanwhile player A will need to make additional Ascended or Legendary weapons to have full top tier weapon set

-Can share his weapons among his characters, so he doesn’t have to consistently transfer 1 weapon around them ( Big convenient bonus )

So to conclude:

Even with the Sigil swapping feature:

-A Legendary is still not better than 40 Ascendeds in term of convenience, except for people who have only 1-2 character with small inventory and Bank

- A legendary is no match for 40 Ascendeds in term of build customization, it may have slight advantage in the variety of stats but lose big time in the variety of weapon type as well as the quantity( both purchase the same number of Sigils ).

-A legendary is much more beautiful looking. This is the only real benefit of Legendary over Ascendeds, and the main reason people go for them.

But yes, in regard to functionality, it clearly not a driving factor – which further goes back to undermine the OPs stance that they require more functionality to justify their price, as it isn’t even really a factor with respect to price in the first place.

I already said it.

The idea of just being able to swap sigils on Legendaries is bro-ken. Not just broken, but bro-ken.

It’s a great and awesome possibility; and it would work fantastically towards giving them better/more functionality. But it’s absolutely not the right thing to let past the design and development stage. For numerous reasons.

Can’t have a bigger disagree than this. Explain to me what make Sigil swapping bro-ken ? Pls note that if the impact is not as significant as having 20-30% more stat than ascended (that would make legendary worth their price though ) , I would consider your argument a load of crap.

As far as I can see, it will make it slightly more convenient for players who use expensive Sigils on their legendary and don’t want to destroy them when changing their build, nothing more, nothing less. Otherwise, they would have to make another ascended to put the other Sigils on, that’s UTTERLY ridiculous considering they already paid 40 times the price of an ascended for 1 weapon of the same stats. U must be a very unreasonable and full of jealousy person if you think that’s enough to even be considered slightly much.

Stop pretending that you don’t know how big of the value for sigil swapping. The ability to make yourself efficient in every single situation, without sacrificing like 40 spaces or more, and without wasting time to buy sigils, without messing around with your inventory to find the appropriate weapons, is tremendous.

If you don’t think it’s a big deal, you people who wield the legendaries yourself wouldn’t have propose it so strongly. If you want to argue about the “skin” can only be applied to one legendary, then you should create 10 more ascended and make them all into your legendary skin, and add the appropriate sigils to them. And like I said, it’ll mess up the market again, and all legendary related materials will be doubled or tripled in price because legendaries become a must-have to everyone now.

Stop pretending that it’s not a big deal to you, you guys want to be stronger and more efficient than everyone else.

It’s not a big feature by any mean. To be honest, I strongly believe Legendary weapons need WAY more feature to deserve its current cost not just something as pathetically simple as this.

Sigil swapping doesn’t make legendary any stronger, only more convenient for those who are willing to pay 30 times more to have a pretty skin with EXACTLY the same level of strength as an ascended that any scrub can get with little effort, it’s UNFAIR. Now you have convinced me, it’s still definitely not worth it. Legendary also needs at least 5% more power over ascended, the ability to change weapon and aura’s color, a special sign on your name ( For ex: thunder for Bolt, black hole for Twilight ), better special effects for each skill….etc and I may consider them worth the CURRENT price.

Have to disagree with this.

The stat swapping utility of a Legendary is already enough of a benefit over a standard Ascended item. This already provides a significant edge over having to craft multiple ascended weapons for multiple builds. Especially when taking account bound into consideration.

Having to purchase/replace sigils to accommodate a build is a pittance compared to having to craft an entire ascended weapon. Also, unless you’re at the tippy-tippy-top of record setting performances, use of rare sigils over exotics would be just fine for frequent build changes (often 1%-3% variance between exotic and rare). Or even taking a loss of maybe 5% performance by not swapping at all is hardly even a material consideration for general use.

And if, for arguments sake, that level of min/max performance is a consideration, having to craft additional ascended weapons – (edit) in addition to already having a legendary – is also a pittance compared to the collaborative armor/runes/trinkets/(edit)infusions which would be necessary as well to achieve that performance.

And yes, this comes from a legendary user.

For the price of 1 legendary, you can craft 30-40 ascended weapons. With all of those ascended, you can have every combination of stats with a big variety of Sigils and builds + you can have weapon of every type and put them on every character so u won’t have to move them around.

To conclude: Even with the Sigil swapping feature, 30-40 ascended are still far more convenient than 1 legendary if u don’t care about the skin.

No, instead of wasting spaces and prepare like 40 weapons for every single situation, sigil swapping’s value is way more than you think. It is convenient, space saving, and extremely useful. If legendary becomes something like that, the price will be at least doubled if not trippled because it becomes a “must have” to everyone.

I’m surprised you can’t see the obvious flaw of your own argument. " Space saving ? " you sound like ascended weapons are junks people just leave in their inventory and never touched. In that case, why the hell did you even compare them to Legendary in the first place ?

-Even if you have only 1 character your argument is still not true, because 1 Legendary GreatSword for ex is not nearly as combat effective as 1 Ascended GS and 2 Ascended weapons on the other hand + an kitten nal of Ascended weapon in inventory to customize your build.
-Now if you have like 8 characters of 8 classes: You can equip everyone with a full Ascended weapon set and still have some left for reserve and customization. I don’t see how it can be less convenient than having 1 Legendary that you will have to transfer between characters, and at least 4 classes won’t be able to use it.

Moreover, the Sigil swapping feature is no where near that huge, as the cost of most Sigils is less than a gold, even the best is only around 6-10 golds there is no way people would pay a few thousands more gold for that one feature. Remember, the biggest value of legendary weapon is still the skin.

I agree that legendary can swap sigil under one condition:
Every time you switch a sigil, it cost 5g to select the change.

Otherwise legendary is no longer cosmetic, but a “must have” because it’s just too useful to give up. There’re skins that’re more expensive than legendary (Great Saw) , so legendary shouldn’t have that much of a previlage.

If the stats can be switched freely, there is no reason to charge the sigil switching, and 5 gold is definitely an unreasonable price considering it’s more expensive than 90 % of Sigils.

Some skins are expensive because of their rarity, they were actually dirt cheap when they were first released and most people who wanted them had a chance to get them easily back then. When I first started this game, the Ghastly Grinning Shield was like 200 gold.

Legendary is 30-40 times more expensive than an ascended, even if u count the cost to make it to 500 crafting, it’s still 20 times more. If u want to be fair, legendary needs tons more features to make it worth.

Hi, as we all know, legendary allows players to select the stat combination they like. However, this function is not as useful as it could be because we can’t switch Sigil. For ex: A condi build and a power build will obviously need different Sigils, but if u have an expensive Sigil on them ( Malice, Bursting, Energy, Force… ), it will be a pain. Thus even though we can switch stats on legendary, we can’t really switch builds without losing a chunk of gold.

So, I think it’s reasonable for legendary to have a function that enable players to switch between Sigils. For ex: any sigil we apply to the legendary will be saved and can be switched around the same way we can switch stats. This is nothing big but will greatly increase the value and usefulness of legendaries.

Btw: Is this the right topic to post this ?

OK, thanks all. I will try out an ele. I seem to understand they’re pretty powerful in PvP as well as celestial, but not so great in large scale WvW? I’ll be sure not to step foot into a dungeon until I have some exp under my ele belt

-There is no way an Aoe class can be bad at large scale fights. Ele is Fantastic in WvW, even better than Necro since they can provide a lot of CC and healing beside massive AoE damage.

-The biggest weakness of Ele is they have the lowest base health and armor among all class, so you will die within a mili second of not paying attention whether it’s PvE or WvW. If someone with decent skill specifically focus you in a big fight, it will be hard to stay relevant, watch out for theif, mesmer and ranger, the first 2 can go unnoticed and wreck you in a second, the 3rd can heavily damage you from a far in a very short amount of time.

-GuildWars 2 is very casual compared to the traditional MMORPG. You can get the top tier gears with moderate effort, and they are only 5% better than the second tier gears which is extremely easy to get. Moreover, It encourages players to help each others (revive system ) and everyone get relatively the same amount of reward when doing something together, so players are not as competitive and nicer.

Guild Wars 2 is casual if that’s the play style your going by. Perhaps you have chosen to be casual? I find that the game caters to both the casual and the hardcore. The skill ceiling is actually quite high at the upper level of PVP and i bet not anyone can come up with a perfect PVE group without really putting in the effort. While i’m not familiar with too much of the late game PVE i remember when i was playing a while back that many, many runs in Gw2 dungeons were unsuccessful, much more so than the unsuccessful runs i had in WoW.

True, but the thing is you don’t need a hardcore group to beat the hardest content in the game, a pub group can beat Arah and Frac 50 just fine.

Returning player questions

Dragonax.6487

-For PvE, tank is pretty unnecessary in this game, everyone go full DPS:
Guardian is a very desirable character in PvE due to the amount of utility they can bring.
Necro is rather useless in PvE because they bring almost nothing but damage,
Mesmer can bring many useful utility just like Guard so they are decent.
Warrior got nerfed hard recently but they still has decent DPS + best offensive buffs in the game so they are desirable.

-For PvP and WvW, Tank can be useful if you know what you are doing:

Guardian is the best at supporting, with the right builds and gears, they can also achieve the unkillable status of a tank ( though through sustain and utility rather than straight tankiness )

Warrior has the best straight tankiness in the game due to the highest base stats and the ability to wear heavy armor. If pure tank is what you want, they are the class to go for.

Necro is the best at applying conditions (Bleed, Burn, Poison…. etc ) to slowly wearing down enemy, in 1v1 and small fights, it takes pretty long to kill a Necro due to the death shroud bar and the sustain. They are the only class that can go toe to toe with Warrior in a straight fight. They are great in all situation: Big, small fights or 1v1, their only down side is the lack of mobility

_Mesmer is a class that relies on deception to win, they are extremely good in small fights and 1v1. Problem is they are highly single target in damage so in big group, they are only needed for some of their "important " utilities: (namely group stealth and portal )

Rune of Strength

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dragonax.6487

It’s not the rune that is OP but the problem that DPS is so kitten useful in melting enemies. As a bit more of a solo player myself (I like to take my characters and just roam around exploring bits and parts of the world) I find Rune of Strength to only be significantly better for my warrior, while I use Rune of the Flame Legion on my guardian and Rune of the Ranger on my ranger.

The balance issue lies far beneath the surface of “Rune of Strength is OP”…so, no. This is a bad idea.

Let assume DPS isn’t the main stream. Then Rune of Strength still gives significantly more than all other DPS rune especially for classes that can stack a lot of might like warrior and guardian. Even if you are not in a good might stacking class, with 2 Sigil of battle swapping around you can maintain 12 stack of might no problem which is the equivalent of + 420 power and condition damage permanently not to mention the 7% additional damage. Give me a Rune that provide anywhere close to that amount and I might be "convinced " that it’s not a problem.

I think the price has already proven that it’s a bit too OP atm ( almost double the highest price old Divinity Rune ever reached ). It gives highest might duration among the Runes and the +7 % damage under might is no different from +7 % damage permanently as you will never run out of might running with a group or with 2 Sigil of Battle. It’s even more powerful in combination with Phalanx strength allowing a single warrior to give his party a 25 stack of might easily.

I strongly feel that Rune needs a considerable nerf. For ex: The + 7% should be tone down to +4 % like Rune of Orge and the might duration should be lower to 30% same as Rune of Hoebalk ( even with that I bet it may still remains most expensive rune )

Hi, can we have some way to break previously transmuted items pls. I know it’s probably unnecessary now but I still have some items that I want to break but can’t since I took break between the patches. I believe many returning players will have the same problem as me, and it’s not a huge amount of work.

Anet should release a server for SEA and Oceanic. I’m sick of playing with 400 ping regularly and get beaten in all the WvW fights that I should have won just because my skills take a few years to respond.

So when it’s gonna be out ? Anet the price of that exotic piece of crap is getting too overly ridiculous and need to be stabilized.

Pls, I’m just back after a few months break so I totally missed the ward robe update, now I have several pieces of gear that I want both stats back since changing appearance is no longer an issue.

Tequati’s fight is something the Zhaitan’s fight should have been like. Even if he is weakened he is still a being equal to God man, getting destroyed by a big baloon with laser cannon is ridiculous.
