I just did this for the first time (and hadn’t read any strategy online). I was hit and downed by the very first orb in the first couple of seconds. Fair enough — “Dodge the orb”. I used Bandage and the instant I stood up I got the orb in the face again (despite hammering on Dodge). Downed. Rinse and repeat a total of four times. I guess I should be grateful he only interrupted my Bandage channel once?

In the meantime, the NPCs were plinking away at his health and come the fourth time, I was lucky enough to be able to dodge away on recovery and finish his last 10% or so ranged without him casting another orb. As a result, there certainly wasn’t any time to “learn” how the fight worked since I was downed for over 80% of it without ever getting a chance to actually do anything.

Not a great design IMO. In hindsight, I probably would have gotten more out of it if I had just let him kill me so I could rez at (presumably) a comfortable range :-P

Agreed. It’s particularly tedious since you can be locked in combat with some random enemy which you can neither see nor attack. Apart from the difficulty healing (with the attendant problem of getting jumped while low on health) it is also not possible to change your skills.

What exactly does "added skill fact" mean?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DryHumour.1307

DryHumour.1307

Just out of curiosity, what exactly does it mean when a release note says that a skill fact was added? Is this purely a display issue being fixed (i.e. the skill was always working but the tooltip was “wrong/lacking/imprecise”) or does it mean that an actual gameplay change has been made. Or does it sometimes mean one and sometimes the other?

Warrior Greatsword "Rush" Bugged

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: DryHumour.1307

DryHumour.1307

The Warrior Greatsword skill “Rush” has been bugged since launch. I raise the issue again in the forlorn hope that more reports will push it higher in the fix queue.

  1. The “Rush” will often overshoot the target. Sometimes the toon will turn around (client/server disagreement on position?) and manage to swing but usually the attack will miss. This appears more prevalent if melee assist is off. It also often happens against moving targets (but that might be expected).
  2. Against some targets (particularly large bosses and crosshair targeted ones) the run phase will play out in full, resulting in “running in place” if the distance covered is small, and no attack will be made at all. Adrenaline is wasted in this case.
  3. The usual problem with imperceptible terrain blockages preventing the rush from reaching the target — even when manual movement over the same path is not hindered. This is true of a variety of movement skills on a variety of classes.

Sometimes “about face” doesn’t work, regardless of other keys. I haven’t found any pattern to it: it’s not combat, other movement, other keys, skills on cooldown, etc.

It’s entirely possible that there’s more than one bug at work here. Holding a mouse button down definitely does disable “About Face”, though.

In-game bug categories are insufficient

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: DryHumour.1307

DryHumour.1307

The in-game bug reporting tool requires both a category and a sub-category to be present before permitting a submission. The available (sub-)categories do not cover all possible game elements, making correct in-game submission of some bugs impossible. For example, there’s no way to report a bug with a keybinding. Nor for any UI element other than the limited number of panels mentioned (which don’t include, for example, the Settings dialogue or any of it’s sub-dialogues like Options).

Necro melee minions don't engage reliably

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: DryHumour.1307

DryHumour.1307

Necromancer melee minions still fail to engage enemy targets reliably: they frequently simply stand without entering combat. This seems to be independent of distance to target either at engagement time or during subsequent combat; it may be related to the “age” of the minion, or some sort of other time factor where they become “stale” somehow. (Since there’s no easy way to dismiss most minions, this is tricky to test; that’s a separate — and presumably intentional — gameplay mechanic issue, however.)

On the other hand, there’s always also the possibility that there are more systems in play than we might think. As such, our good friend Unintended Consequences (unfortunate interplay or outright bugs) may well be involved in what is undoubtedly a more complex system than a simple RNG.

FWIW, I know that I get Broken Lockpicks and various kinds of Bones in my hour or two of an evening almost right from the get-go so I assume that DR is kicking in hard and fast even for a relatively casual player like myself.

In fairness I spend most of my time at the moment levelling alts by just “playing the game” (and, I hasten to add, enjoying it) and so am not in high level zones all that often and that probably dramatically reduces access to (the apparently appropriately titled) rares and exotics to begin with since I don’t think there are all that many sub-40 or so anyway. But I have to admit, the Porous Bones are really starting to get on my nerves: they remind me a lot of Half Digested Boots for some reason….

Why Map Completion should not include WvW

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

DryHumour.1307

Every time this comes up, I like to add the solution that I’ve seen which I’ve liked the most. Have PvE versions of the WvWvW maps which award no PvP benefits (no badges, no blueprints).

This would maintain WvWvW balance, get PvE players out of the WvWvW maps and queue slots, and wouldn’t award a Legendary without WvWvW participation anyway (since badges are required; in a pinch, don’t award Gifts for PvE map completion).

Win, win.

When WvW and World Completion Collide

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: DryHumour.1307

DryHumour.1307

I’ll add my traditional plea for separate PvE versions of the WvWvW maps. These would award absolutely no PvP benefits (no blueprints, no badges) so would not affect balance.

This would help move world completionists out of the WvWvW map and queue slots at the same time as solving the reachability problem (likewise opening up the JPs and vistas for those who like to take their time to look around). Since you still need badges for a Legendary, you’d still have to WvWvW. (Also, completing the PvE versions could simply not award Gifts since those are only useful for Legendaries.)

TL;DR Have PvE versions of the maps (which don’t award WvWvW benefits).

Each time this topic comes up, I like to mention my own favourite of the proposals I’ve seen (in the forlorn hope that Anet might see it). While rotation would certainly help, it doesn’t address the problem of having non-contributing PvE players taking up map or queue slots. (I’m not as big a fan of random assignment; I’d rather see an approach that doesn’t rely on the RNG.)

Something that’s been mooted before is having PvE versions of the maps with no PvP drops of any kind (i.e. no blueprints, no badges). Play on these maps would therefore not provide any PvP advantage, and would move all the PvE players out of the WvWvW slots. PvE players could take more time to look around, enjoy vistas, experiment with the JPs (well, to the extent that respawn permits looking at the scenery anyway). WvWvW would have more slots for dedicated and better motivated PvP players.

Since badges are still required for a Legendary, WvWvW would still be required for that. In a pinch map completion of the PvE versions of the maps could also award no Gift, since it has no other use anyway; the Gift could be awarded separately for completing the WvWvW versions.

[ For the record, I did my map completion on my main the hard way and will continue to slog away on my alts, but it’s getting increasingly tedious — and I’ve had the “benefit” of being on NSP, which is in freefall through the tiers at the moment. ]

Whenever this comes up, I like to mention my personal favourite solution of those I’ve seen mentioned in the myriad other threads: separate PvE versions of the maps which don’t award PvP benefits for anything (no badges, no blueprints).

Those who just want to be able to look around and enjoy the artwork or do the JP at their own pace can do so without taking a (often non-contributing) WvWvW slot on map or in queue from someone who wants to PvP. (Since you still need badges for a Legendary, that still would require WvWvW participation as intended.)

Win-Win.

Well, I’d just like to be given the opportunity to check out the map in the first place and find my way through the puzzle.

I’d really like to see separate PvE versions of the WvWvW maps for this reason: I’d like time to actually be able to slow down and take a look around at what the art department came up with. The PvE maps wouldn’t ever award any PvP items (badges, blueprints). One convenient side effects would be that PvE players would not be taking up slots on WvWvW maps (and also not contributing) or in queues while going for map completion (which is going to get increasingly difficult as the tiers stabilize); those going for Legendaries would still need WvWvW for badges anyway.

I thought there might be – my memory is no longer what it once was (I think). I suspect that when I contemplated my (admittedly very meagre and never realized) chances at GWAMM, I mentally placed the PvP ones in the “No kitten chance” category because I sucked (and continue to suck) so badly at it.

For grinders thats around 500ish hours.
For investors about 100 hours.

Not only that (and that’s wicked fast in my opinion, particularly since I don’t imagine there’s much of a marketplace left) but IIRC they’d likely have to be the right 500 or 100 hours….

If memory serves – admittedly always a dicey proposition with me – Lucky/Unlucky could only realistically be ground (grinded?) during Canthan New Year. I also seem to remember that even so, it would take two of them (standing AFK in the Rings for pretty much the whole multi-day event – without d/c) if that was your only source…..

Don’t even get me started about the original (timed) Drunkard. And ask the folks who have the original (and non-Kilroy) Survivor how their PTSD is doing….

I honestly don’t recall if there were enough other achievements on that track that you could get GWAMM without at least one of those four. For my part, as a casual albeit with well over 500 hours but a mere 17 HoM points, I certainly never got close on any of them. I wouldn’t recommend that grind to anyone just for a few skins!

Yes for the initial unlock it is rather expensive; but I would have though within the reach of even a small guild. Also, once unlocked, the costs are not unreasonable.

First launch today, picked up major content download.

  1. Was able to auth with login server from launcher while download proceeded; no newsfeed.
  2. On d/l completion, client got to character select.
  3. Tried to select a human warrior 80 toon who was in LA.
  4. Client exited back to launcher from LA splash.
  5. Launcher immediately downloaded more (hotfix?) and restarted.

Second launch (automatically initiated after apparent hotfix download)

  1. Auth with login was successful; no newsfeed.
  2. Selected same toon, got to NSP LA overflow.
  3. Got F&F part 2 letter; read and deleted.
  4. Expanded new Daily Task at top right.
  5. Selected “More…” from DT, got Daily Achiev panel on char screen.
  6. (At roughtly this point got Help pop up for new top right DT.)
  7. Looked at new Daily and new Monthly achievements panels in chararcter screen.
  8. Roughly at this point got Help pop up for configuring DT/MT checkboxes.
  9. Shortly after, client d/c back to select screen (didn’t note code, sorry).
  10. Selected same toon again; CTD from LA splash and filed a crash report.
  11. Came to Bug forums.

Third attempt

  1. Manually re-started launcher.
  2. Auth with login successful; no newsfeed.
  3. Started client.
  4. Selected same Human Warrior 80 LA toon again.
  5. Got to NSP LA overflow.
  6. Got F&F part 2 letter again; read and deleted again.
  7. Opened map to try to get out of LA.
  8. D/c again back to character select code 7:11:3:189:101.
  9. Select Sylvari Necro 32 toon in Kessex Hills, NSP.
  10. Client exited to launcher from Kessex splash.
  11. Launcher again apparently loaded a small amount of data.
  12. Launcher restarted.

Fourth Attempt (automatic launcher restart after download)

  1. Auth with login successful; no newsfeed.
  2. Selected Norn Guardian 39 toon in Hoelbrak, NSP server.
  3. Received F&F part 2 mail, but did not open email dialogue.
  4. Able to see other PCs running about. (In LA I didn’t see anyone, but I was standing at Armoursmith station, so that isn’t unusual in and of itself.)
  5. Moved around. Various alt-tab back and forth to browser to write this up.
  6. Asked in Hoelbrak map chat if anyone else was having d/c problems.
  7. One respondent in five minutes reporting “3-4 times over the past few hours”.
  8. Entered Wayfarer via portal.
  9. Opened email; read F&Fp2 and deleted.
  10. Entered mists, then NSP LA primary via portal
  11. Saw other toons in LA.
  12. Reported gold seller :P
  13. Fingers-crossed seems to be working.

(Took multiple tries to post this to forums….)

Solving 100% completion problem

in Suggestions

Posted by: DryHumour.1307

DryHumour.1307

Another solution to the problem which has been proposed (and I wish I could remember by whom) is to have separate PvE instances of the WvWvW maps. These instances would have PvE mobs and within them no badges, blueprints, or any other PvP reward would ever be dropped. (Ideally hearts and DEs would be added too.)

  • WvWvW would be functionally unchanged
  • PvE players would no longer take up a WvWvW slot
  • WvWvW would no longer have non-contributing PvE players
  • PvE players can visit all POIs, vistas under their own steam, at their own pace
  • PvE JP enthusiasts can enjoy the puzzles at their own pace

Note that Legendaries would still require WvWvW participation (for the Gift of Battle)
There would also technically be no reason to award the Gift of Exploration for world completion using this mechanism, since it is only useful for crafting a Legendary anyway. As a middle ground, it would also be possible to e.g. award one for PvE completion and one for WvWvW completion (rather than the two now awarded under the current rules).

Err, right there: “… promotes the elitist idea”. By definition, “to promote” something indicates an effort to modify behaviour. There would be no need to promote something which was universally accepted.

My argument was entirely based on your own observation: that those who aren’t elitist aren’t going to ask anyway. Raising or lowering the bar shouldn’t have any impact on those who are agreed to the social contract to begin with.

The reason for this is that Badges can be attained by luck and jumping puzzles alone.

If this is the case then I have made an honest mistake, for which I unreservedly apologize! I didn’t realize that one could get badges outside of WvWvW. I believed that they were unique to killing players and doing the JPs inside WvWvW.

For the separate PvE versions, the proposal is that no badges and no blueprints would be awarded for anything (JPs or mobs — and you can’t kill fellow players at all, as normal for PvE). Indeed, no PvP rewards of any kind would be dropped, specifically to avoid ruining PvP play. (Witness e.g. the Golem in a Box and other PvE consumables debacles — hopefully Anet learned their lesson there.)

You can share anything you want by talking; if someone wants to know your gear/build, is it that much trouble to type a few words and shift+click your gear? Have a conversation with someone about it, god forbid anyone actually talk to anyone. Regardless of what extent it happens at, the elitism and and desire to exclude players would imcrease. No to inspections, just ask.

Have you ever done it? More than once? It’s extremely tedious to paste/type your full build (all armour, all weapons, all accessories, all traits, all utilities). It’s equally tedious for the recipient to digest it in that form.

The elitism already exists. (Apparently in both camps.)
