Wardrobe: Revealing Male Armor/Outfits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

GammaBreaker.9102

It’s not even so much “Stupid Sexy Flanders” outfits I’d be interested in for males.

I’d like to see some high quality barbarian styles of armor. HD-textured etched leather straps and bracers, and all that kind of thing. With less area to model and texture, the items ought to have higher levels of detail.

The current male options are usually bland and rather low quality or some ridiculous A-MMO getups with spikes and flapping fabric and glows. It doesn’t bother me that some people like this, and sometimes I do, too! It just tends to be rather binary.

This isn’t to say that there are NO decent sets for males, but there are usually only a handful of armors that appeal to me for a given type.

Feedback:why gf couldn't get into this game

GammaBreaker.9102

I’m not really surprised to hear that she couldn’t get into the human story. I found it quite dull and lacking in flavor. Faren is fun, but that’s about where it ends.

Perhaps she’ll find the Sylvari more interesting. Despite my pre-release disinterest in them, they ended up being my favorite race when I played them through. Unfortunately, their story gives way to the main campaign eventually and the continuation of the Malyck story was left on the cutting room floor of Heart of Thorns. RIP the only plot thread I was interested in.

Saying this is probably going to rub some people the wrong way, but GW2’s story doesn’t have very good hooks. After playing GW1 from beta all the way up to GW2 release, the world’s lore had to be butchered for the sake of the game’s direction. This leaves GW2 to be built on a shaky foundation of retcons, omissions, and direction shifts. If she’s a lover of stories in her games, this isn’t going to have what she craves.

Could not have picked a more lackluster name for the Guardian’s evolution.

Can’t say as I’m thrilled about the theme, or really the whole “elite spec” thing as a whole. Interest dwindled after the NPE shenanigans, and this isn’t reeling me back in, from what’s been said. Then again, I never liked the trait system either. It can’t possibly be worse.

It’s the risk you run when walking dangerous cliffs or doing jumping puzzles. It’s there for a good reason.

There are multiple spots on the terrain where what is visually a gentle slope — and part of a normal traffic area — is functionally a chain reaction of micro falls that can do major damage to you, even though your elevation only changed by about ~1 character height.

EDIT: Hmm… after looking into it further, I did find that the original was also referred to as the Nostromo, which is quite odd. Sorry, I’ve never seen the original before just heard it referenced.

Yep, I’ve got about 10 original black/silver/orange Belkin n52’s — spares, and also multiple gaming PCs. Released way back in 2003. It wasn’t immensely successful, but it wasn’t a flop either. That’s when Belkin got the idea to cooperate with Razer to establish a stronger presence in the gaming peripheral market, which unfortunately didn’t go as well as it could have. If you’re running a TE, you should consider yourself blessed to have one that operates properly. The drivers are notoriously dysfunctional on that model.

The naming was a bit of a cluster****. “Belkin Nostromo SpeedPad n52” is kind of a mouthful. Even though the original was the SpeedPad n50, for whatever reason, it was “Nostromo” that stuck rather than SpeedPad when it comes to referencing.

I know very well I can change the keypad. The issue here is not keybindings. The issue here lies within the game and the visual representation of abilities, which can’t be changed.

And this I agree with. It’s been one of my gripes with the game since day 1. While I’m content enough with my n52 configuration, the immovable skills speak of an aggressive effort to idiot-proof the controls.

Not expecting it to change, either. It’s just the way it is.

I’ve been using the n52te for YEARS (the precursor to the Nostromo), and just bought an Orbweaver.

The Belkin Nostromo n52 is the original. The n52TE is the one they let Razer handle afterward. Razer improved the hardware and faceplanted on the software, though. A pity, really.

On the other hand, you can gut a TE and put the original n52 circuit boards into the shell and make a nice hybrid.

I never said it wasn’t realistic (it is not), I complain about the feel of it. It doesn’t feel like a longbow. It was already unrealistic before the patch, but I could stand it at least.

Yeah, I have to refrain from trying to impart my senses of realism onto bows in this game. Like the warrior longbow trait for increased range being “Stronger Bowstrings”. It is an astoundingly common misconception that the bowstring is the mechanical strength of the bow.

Rapid Fire always seemed like it belonged on the Shortbow, thematically.

Oh well. Either way, the animation speed on Rapid Fire is just…comedic now. Even more so with QZ. It’s like Green Arrow and the Flash had a kid.

The Living Story is an admirable effort, at least at heart, to continue to bring refreshes and change to the existing game worlds. Giving additional reasons to revisit areas, adding new events, reshaping parts of the world. Debates of execution aside, it’s a good idea at its root.

While that’s all well and good, it’s a neverending conveyer belt of snacks, when sometimes what’s wanted is a full course meal. Huge tracts of land, numerous new world and mega-bosses, leaps and plunges forward into story and lore. Typically a new race and/or class to shake things up. Enough to keep a relaxed player busy for a month or so (there will always be content-blitzing players, though) with more and new things to do even after all of the immediate new content is explored. This works well in tandem with the LS concept, rather than one supplanting the other.

There’s also more than one way to unleash expansion-level content in today’s world of digital distribution. It doesn’t have to be heading to Amazon or Walmart to grab your box and key anymore. Acquisition doesn’t have to be just opening up your wallet and handing over $50 for the entire brick of content.

On an entirely unrelated note, this is the most archaic forum system I’ve seen released with a game so recent.

Sales are an important part of what I do for a living (in addition to service and manufacturing). It’s just an important part of business to learn how to read and handle people, and how to spin things. There’s a certain selection of vocabulary, turns of phrase, and ways of approaching and deflecting points that make this work on the average person. While I pride myself in being honest in what I do, it’s still a necessary skill. It’s not just as an offensive skill either, it’s important for defense. Recognizing when someone is trying to handle you (return fraud in particular), and knowing how to turn it on them or stalemate.

What I see on these forums? I don’t think so. There are some posts that get me to raise a brow, but I suspect they may just be from other eloquent individuals that may also have that capacity for reasons. After you’ve integrated reading and handling customers into yourself for years and decades, it can often leak into your normal conversation style.

Sometimes I find myself using my sales-speak on friends, so it happens.

Town Clothes as an Outfit

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

GammaBreaker.9102

Pretty much any argument you could make against having town clothes as an outfit can be made against having outfits as a whole. They clip strangely, they hide what armor class you’re wearing, and they don’t look combat-appropriate. At least the basic town clothes set would make a lot of sense as an outfit, or at least as much sense as, say, the Fancy Winter stuff. It does still leave a question of how to best add the extra pieces that were bought individually, but it’s at least something.

This is what really boggled me about it. All I can think of is that it came down to whether or not it would be a profitable use of development time to make the adjustments for Town Clothes to be an outfit or wardrobe skins instead of simple tonics. It may be more complicated than that, but we’ll probably never know.

I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be an evolved version of the Zenith set. The two names are even synonyms.

The method of acquisition will likely be related in some way, through achievements and/or collections.

May well be the case. From an aesthetic point of view, the arrangement of the crystals looks even more…chaotic than the Zenith skins. If that’s what they were going for, that’s all well and good — purple is typically the color of Chaos magic in GW. The sense of the weapon’s shape seems to have suffered greatly for it, though.

They make a game we can play as we want, wandering and enjoying content and gameplay. Then they ‘fix’ the trait system, making it so we have, basically, one path we HAVE to follow to level. Or lose out on traits as we want them. Then they ‘fix’ leveling so we not only have one path to follow as we level for traits, we get no versatility on our play style, either.

Next ‘feature pack’ will involve removing all personalization from characters, making it so we all look alike. After all, we already all have to act alike.

They slowly started this already with the “Outfit” system. We use to get armor sets that we could mix and match and personalize. Now we get outfits that all we can do is dye four pieces.

Don’t forget about Town Clothes!

Oh, well…uh, not to hijack the thread, but I’ve had the exact same thing happen just now. Got a Valkyrie Ascended Chest, wondering what to take. Mostly playing Mesmer, Ranger, and Guardian right now. Those three share Sword, GS, and Torch…but Torch doesn’t really count. So I guess it comes down to Sword and Greatsword.

GS is a power weapon for all three classes, and Valk is largely a Power type combo, so…GS? Though Sword is a hybrid offense/defense weapon for all three, so that also plays right into Valk…

That means you won’t have weapon skill 2 until level 2, weapon skill 3 until level 4, weapon skill 4 unlocks at level 7, and no 5th weapon skill until level 10!

The first utility skill is delayed until level 13, and the elite is delayed until 40. I can find a some disagreement on when the second and third utility are unlocked, but it looks like they are significantly later. I couldn’t find much concrete information on profession skills, but found at least one hint that attunements for Eles are also significantly delayed.

No weapon swap until level 15! :P

I’m not sure why ArenaNet thinks their systems are so complicated. Ten levels (yes, pretty fast levels, but still) before you have a full weapon bar? Fifteen before you can handle having two weapons? Yikes.

Good gravy, I hope the delay isn’t that long. Those first 15 levels are already a drag, hobbling along with limited useful abilities. Add to that even longer delay on utilities…

Between some of the April changes and this, rolling alts is becoming a bit of a drag.

Well, thanks for this post. I was wondering if those Gem Store costumes worked like the Zenith skins, or if they were a one-time usable, then standard transmute after that. Just confirms that I will never buy them.

The means by which ANet has implemented hairs, faces, transmutations — basically, all the cosmetic recustomizing — is remarkably unappealing. It makes me NOT want to spend my money until I have carefully considered what I want to look like, and then only a small bit of it. They’ve gone completely backwards from the usual approach, and are successful in not suckering me out of my money. I guess I should be thankful.

Rift certainly has a leg up in the wardrobe department. I spent more on wardrobe slots there than I will ever spend on Transmutations here. Too bad the rest of the Rift isn’t as fabulous as its wardrobe.

If you do not have a use for the account bound materials, just delete them. At this point, even if Anet makes them tradable, there are so many players with dozens of stacks of each mat that they would be virtually worthless on the open market.

Unless I get the urge to pursue it, it’s most likely what I’ll do once it caps my collections.

Though, if they were to become movable, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a direct hand-off through the TC. They could be converted at a cost — be it skill points, gold, karma, Forge filler items, a partial loss in mats during conversion, or what have you — into an unbound container. When opened, providing the determined number of materials. A partial material loss would cut surplus from stockpiles, and the whole thing would be just another means of stimulating currency flows and sinks.

Just a passing thought.

Why?

in Living World

Posted by: GammaBreaker.9102

GammaBreaker.9102

Why do people see the need in trying to change the game into what they think they want?
Why do people complain about the game so much?
Why can’t people let Anet do their jobs instead of trying to do it for them?

These really all fall under the same blanket. Playerbases are opinionated. Severely, in most cases! It’s pretty much the norm now, since the days of open-channel communication with developers has come around. It’s not always a bad thing, as devs are not infallible, and sometimes suggestions and desires become changes and additions for the best. More often than not, though, those suggestions and desires are not in the game’s best interests.

Why do people want mounts?

This is actually sort of an interesting one. GW has gone to such lengths to make mounts a non-entity in the game, including NPC forms of mounting, that it becomes awkward for immersion instead of supportive. Caravans are still needed, apparently, so warp-point/gate technology is not the be-all and end-all solution for transport. So it becomes strange that there are no ridden creatures. Not everyone apparently gets to ride inside powered armor, a golem, or a seige devourer, so the lack of cavalry presence in combat is doubly awkward. The centaurs effectively being their own cavalry is a portion of what makes them such a threat (thematically) in warfare, is it not?

I’ve introduced a friend of mine to the game who has never played the big name MMOs, just a couple of B/C type titles, which did not use any particular mount system. So no previous exposure or innate desire for a WoWlike mount. One of the first questions was, why no mounts? It wasn’t about the instant waypoint travel supplanting it (which I have loved since GW 1). It was about…style, theme, immersion.

Would I like mounts? Yes, but only if they were done right. Not a waggling of fingers, a puff of smoke, and then zipping around at 3x walking speed. Something more akin to a singleplayer TES game (albeit not horses). A small increase in speed for a sacrifice of combat capability and maneuverability. A separate, slayable, possibly combative entity of its own.

For all that, I don’t think mounts would work in GW. They’ve been so aggressively designed against. Plus the amount of work required to make them a useful, functional, balanced portion of the game. Not going to happen.

Though, I suppose a well-designed cavalry-based class could be good…

Why do people want to make this game into their old game?

Old game familiar. Familiar good. Unfamiliar bad. FIRE BAD. Nostalgia goggles and duckling imprints are powerful things. Though in some cases, older games may do certain things better. I tend to think GW1 handled certain features better.

Why do people want expansions, When living story will add more content for free over time?

LS1 being temporary content is a double-edged sword. Temporary, evolving content can indeed make the game’s world feel as though it isn’t so static, and that is a good and rare thing in a by-the-books MMO. But it’s fleeting, so it plays against one of GW’s classic strengths — being absent doesn’t leave you behind the curve, but in this case, it does mean you’ve missed out on LS events.

LS2 is apparently going to try and make things a bit more substantial. We’ll see how that goes.

Game Updates: Wardrobe, Transmutation, Outfits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: GammaBreaker.9102

GammaBreaker.9102

Hm. Just got back to the game after a long time away. I’m enjoying the additional items that fit into my Collections tab, and the universal wallet system. The Wardrobe is decidedly more of a mixed bag.

It’s brought some definite improvements like skin unlocks and an outfit slot, and transmutation is streamlined pleasantly compared to the original version. For all the good that did, the Town Clothes change is terrible, leaving me unable to dye it or mix it with other items. The conversion rate of my baubles is…uninspiring, as well. I won’t name any names, but there are a dozen other MMOs that GW2 could have aped a new wardrobe system from. What’s been implemented is, at the absolute best, a mediocre solution to wardrobes.

It’s sad to think about the amount of planning and development that went into this overhaul to produce such an unfortunate result. It’s pretty much ensured that I won’t be spending any cash on transmutations until I hit 80 on any given character, and get a relatively final set of gear.

Judging by the size and duration of this thread, it’s being received poorly by a fair number. Makes one wonder if it’s going to do more damage than good to the money gained through wardrobe functions.
