VERY Abnormal Ping Issues

I have also been experiencing this problem only very recently (within the past two weeks or so). I have a normal ping under 100 but now I’m getting spikes up to about 3000 for approximately a minute at a time, maybe once every hour or so at worst. I have not experienced anything like this prior to this time period.

Best I could do is 23 and that put me at #2 overall. I’m guessing #1 has 23 or maybe 24 but I’m with you that 25 seems impossible. But it could be that no one has figured out the optimal (and maybe only) route that can nab you all 25.

I am having a similar experience with the Sanctum challenge, in which I cannot figure out how anyone can get gold.

It seems clear at this point that moving reset to Saturday is non-negotiable for the time being. While this may upset many people, I think this is one of those times where we need to cut Anet some slack. They are pushing out their first expansion and want as many developers to be available as possible during the weeks post-launch to fix the inevitable series of bugs and exploits that come with any new content.

Is it a major inconvenience to some, yes. Is this the end of WvW, absolutely not. The sky is not falling people; the game will still run all seven days, whether you give up on some of them as “karma train days” or not. And as was stated, it may only be temporary.

Also, to those stating that this is a terrible change because of even more bloated queues, you do realize you are making a case FOR Anet to do this right? The idea of readjusting the server population caps was to spread people out and long queues would do just that.

WvW Tournament - can we get one now?

in WvW

Posted by: Gatharin.2674

Gatharin.2674

While tournaments in the past have been events which have only served to unbalance the tiers, I think now is one instance where it would do the opposite. At least in the higher tiers, there are some MAJOR population disparities at the moment that could potentially be resolved by a tourney.

1. Tier 1 needs to be unlocked and the only way that is going to happen is through a tournament. FA has grown far too large for tier 2 and even the other tier 2 servers are curious how their populations stack up to the big three with the arms race that has been going on there lately.

2. The interface of gold and silver is screwed up beyond belief. However, the hold on many guild groups in T2 is tenuous at best. Whichever server is stuck in silver will lose most of their fight guilds. This may finally help to start destacking whatever server that is. While it is true that the amount of bandwagoners will still be high on that server, it seems the rise of Maguuma may soon help reduce the k-training.

My two-cents.

The Orbs - Zhaitan alive? [spoilers]

in Living World

Posted by: Gatharin.2674

Gatharin.2674

I’m with the crowd that thinks the Orb that crashed into the center is Mordremoth, though I have a theory. The Eternal Alchemy shows how the universe works. It’s held in balance by those different Orbs which start spinning when the Elder Dragons are awoken. The Orbs in front of each other serve as counter balance to each other. Now what happens when that balance is meddled with. If the Orb that crashed represents Mordremoth then its representing how there was balance and Zhaitan’s death caused imbalance which caused Mordy to crash into the middle Orb. Now the Elder Dragons all play a bigger role including the Pale Tree and Nightmare court and the human gods. They are all linked in the universe held in balance. Killing Zhaitan screwed this up and balance must be restored thus Mordy must be killed.

You know, I never thought about it this way and I kind of like it. I too was wondering why the orb that would represent Zhaitan was no different than the other orbs if we had defeated him. But the defeat of Zhaitan (power over death and decay) allowing Mordremoth (power over growth) to go on a rampage actually makes sense.

As for the defeat of Zhaitan and the whole Tequatl thing, my theory on the matter is that the energy of the elder dragons does not inhabit the same body each cycle. The energy released by Zhaitan has started to congregate about the most powerful of Zhaitan’s champions, who will in turn become the next incarnation of Zhaitan. Though Tequatl is not sleeping, it can only be natural to assume that it would take a long time for all of the energy housed in Zhaitan to form around the next incarnation, and thus he wont have been said to have “awoken” again until that happened.

The EOTM K-Train: A Commanders Point Of View

I also try to play defense and set up siege like Kaga, though for different reasons. My rationale for doing so in EotM instead of WvW is very simple. With the compact nature of the map and the number of players, enemy forces are obligated to attack your structures. In WvW, there is absolutely no guarantee that enemy forces will 1. Show up and 2. Still attack the structure. In addition, strategic chokes in WvW are far and few between unlike in EotM. By setting up proper defenses at these points, the effects of individual contribution to the well-being of the overall team increase significantly.

First off, be aware that you are probably not going to get too many friendly responses to your question as the WvW community frowns upon using the game mode solely as a means to obtaining a reward/ach points/etc.

That being said, i will try to answer your question as best I can (comes with a big IMO sticker). If I were you I would stick with BG. The season is still too volatile at this point to determine a probable winner. With BG’s coverage advantages, if all other things were even, they would most likely come out with the most points. That is a better reason than nothing to stay versus transfer.

Also, I wouldnt be too sure about that DB/Mag score :P

Concern over glicko point grab

in WvW

Posted by: Gatharin.2674

Gatharin.2674

What you say is true but only if the drop is gradual. I’m not so sure the problem would fix itself if SOR stays in T2 for one/two more weeks. In such a situation, it is likely that SOR would have most of its points (above what a server like DB has) taken. Thus, T2 servers SOS, FA, and Mag would have their scores heavily inflated while leaving DB and other T3 servers with no points to accordingly inflate their scores to keep the gap manageable. Right now the gap between DB and the lowest T2 projected rank is about 120. I think that is already flirting with insurmountable (without absurd dice roll luck). Give it another week or two and that, I would project, is only going to grow.

Concern over glicko point grab

in WvW

Posted by: Gatharin.2674

Gatharin.2674

Is anyone worried with the massive fall of a former T1 server that T1 and T2 will effectively be isolated from the other tiers?

Because SOR had a massive amount of glicko points and they are shedding them so fast, T2 is effectively getting a huge glicko point boost. While I think that is a welcome thing for alleviating the problem with the T1 – T2 point gap, it has now widened the other end. I’m concerned that up-and-coming servers like Dragonbrand will be effectively locked out of moving any higher than T3 unless another fall-out occurs.

TL:DR – I’m concerned that the T2 – T3 gap will become like the T7 -T8 gap of no return from awhile back (bad enough that Anet had to artificially inflate the glicko scores).

Server handicaps for Tourney

in WvW

Posted by: Gatharin.2674

Gatharin.2674

If we as a gw2 community can get the top 6 -8 servers equal in numbers and coverage in timezones , we would all have the funnest time in the tournament. Then it would only come down to skill, politics, and who wants it more.

That would be true, except that it won’t happen on its own. As hard as servers try to recruit, there will always be a bias towards people joining the “winning” servers. IMO, the only way to combat that bias is to add a counter-bias. In other words, you have to add something to the system that doesn’t guarantee numbers equal absolute victory (for the server, not in battles).

As for punishing the large servers, the beauty of a handicap system is that it isnt punishing larger servers for their coverage, nor is it rewarding small servers for their lack of said numbers. Larger servers have more people, ergo they should do better in WvW on the average. The glicko system supports this assertion and we all know it to be true. Therefore, large servers are expected to do better in points than smaller servers.

As an example of why this system works: take billiards. In a billiards tourney, you are given a handicap number. Say I’m new and I’m assigned a 2 and I’m facing a professional (say numbered 6). The way the system works is that I only have to win one game but he has to win the difference in our ranks number of games to claim victory (so 4 in a row).

The billiards handicap system is set up to try and even out the difference in ability and give a reasonable chance at winning to both players. In the case of WvW, the difference is in numbers and the handicap is a way to give a reasonable chance of victory to smaller servers.

TL:DR – You have the numbers, you are expected to use them and dominate points. If you under-perform with those numbers, you lose. Coverage no longer equals automatic victory. Problem solved.

Server handicaps for Tourney

in WvW

Posted by: Gatharin.2674

Gatharin.2674

So with the recent revelation of season two of WvW (codename: WvW tournament 2014), many have rightly pointed out that the top servers are pretty much already decided. This, combined with the slew of increased rewards for victory, has taken the largest problem for WvW, stacked coverage, and amplified it exponentially. It can only be assumed that many people will try to transfer to BG and JQ in the hopes of obtaining those rewards. Meanwhile, pretty much all other servers will get smashed. So how can Anet avoid this debacle?

My suggested solution: Institute server handcaps based on glicko rating (if not something else).

Take a theoretical matchup of JQ, TC, and SF (assuming they all win their first round). Most would agree that if SF managed to get about 50,000 points by the end of the match against these two much larger servers, that would exceed expectations. If this is accomplished, congratulations SF, you just won the match. This would make stacking servers essentially useless and give everyone a reason to play hard, no matter their server. Thoughts?

If kaineng ended up going against JQ and took 50k points by the end of the match-up, congratulations kaineng, you just won the match. Take that bandwaggoners.

What Happened To WvW?

in WvW

Posted by: Gatharin.2674

Gatharin.2674

Well what happen to WvW is that EotM gave servers that were not happy with the status quo a way out.

Thanks to EotM, no server don’t has to deal with the situation in T1 NA anymore. I obviously, can’t speak for other regions and tiers.

I think that is exactly the problem with EotM, that it allows escape from WvW. The problem with this is that any server that does not have a chance at winning has the potential to have a majority of its players pulled into EotM. While this sounds like a blessing, I would consider it more of a curse. This has the potential to lead to matches that are even more dead than they are now, with only 1 (maybe 2) servers fighting it out in earnest. Thus, WvW maps will be inundated by players from one server while the others will provide very few people to fight ->the game becomes even more PvD and karma trains. That is a game I don’t want to play.

Randomize world event timers

Gatharin.2674

Nothing needs changed. People don’t want to wait that long for someting to spawn. Maw and Claw are bad enough.

There seems to be a conflict of interest here. If I understand correctly, the OP (and I dare to say myself, too) seems to argue from the perspective of someone who understands the game as tool for to seeking an adventure. He doesn’t want to know in advance what is happening, he rather wants to learn what the world will throw at him while playing. You, on the other hand, seem to argue of from the perceptive of someone who (please excuse the blunt exaggeration; no offense intended, its just for the sake of making my point) wants to manage a work schedule, most likely since you are working towards some goal.

And I am not sure whether these to interests can be satisfies at the same time. Take the Tequatl event as an example. The way this boss event placed into the world is actually the total opposite of immersion, or the idea of dynamic events. There is almost no “cause and effect”, no “cascading out in a chain of events”, no true dynamic. Just one Tequatl event on a simple, completely predictable, timed loop, over and over again. Don’t get me wrong, I love the new Tequatls fight itself, it’s actually pretty great. But it is completely disconnected from the world (or the map) it takes place in. “It doesn’t care that I am there.” Having either fishheads or no fishheads isn’t exactly my understanding of making a difference. And this ruins the illusion of immersion, for the sake of making the event farmable. You never ponder “Hmmm … I wonder what’s currently going on the Splintered Coast”, since you pretty much already know.

I am not saying that one approach of enjoying the content is better than the other. But I would argue not having a “schedulable” world was the one great feature that GW2 aimed for in the beginning, and it was certainly the one aspect that made me excited for the game. (Well, that, and throwing fireballs from my hand at giant boss monsters while running and dodging around.) Having boss events happen dynamically was, from my understanding, a part of that original design. On the other hand, there are already enough games out there that do this time table & checklist approach to MMO gaming, so the world really didn’t need another one of those. And thus, from a design standpoint, it is kind of sad that GW2 is here just doing what everybody else is already doing.

~MRA

This is exactly it; thank you MRA. Video games in their core nature are an escape into an alternate reality. I think that anything (in this case, frequent specified-time world-events) that cause a disconnect from that purpose are self-defeating to the game by nature. Thus, I suggested a change to steer the course truer to that goal, unpopular though that may be.

And I totally agree CreativeAnarchy, the open world loot is a major issue that needs to be addressed. As it is, I can see why people are so opposed to a change such as this because of the impact that it would have on the reasonable acquisition of rares, exotics, and materials. But it was my hope to disentangle the two issues and focus on just one of those at a time (while realizing that both would have to be addressed simultaneously in a prospective patch).

Randomize world event timers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gatharin.2674

Gatharin.2674

Wow. You don’t understand that all World Bosses, except for Tequatl, have spawn windows? The reason why people know when they pop is because 3rd party websites use APIs to tell exactly where in the event chain the current event is.

If you truly don’t like to do World Bosses because other people are around, tell them to stop looking at the websites that give out the information. Increasing the spawn timer does nothing, because people will still flock to the events once they’re up.

tl;dr – No one predicts when the World Boss shows up. We know EXACTLY when they show up, regardless of the random spawn timer window.

I don’t have a problem with the api telling you where events are at the moment. Imo, that is not the problem. The problem is that the events start far too frequently and, therefore, are too predictable. For example, you can predict that the shadow behemoth will spawn within a thirty minute time frame after two and a half hours. This is what I have a problem with. I think it would be better if the window was more along the lines of the jormag window for every event (maybe with a shorter cooldown to compensate). It is the planning of event -> next event -> next event that is problematic.

Randomize world event timers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gatharin.2674

Gatharin.2674

I think that the mentality of “feeling like you have to wait hours on end for the event” is part of the problem. These events are not meant to be commonplace engagements and should not be treated as such. Pretty sure a majority of us have jobs, school, etc. However, I do not feel that we should all feel entitled to be able to see all of the world-events everyday, in the span of 3 hours. Again, I feel like that has only helped to degrade their meaning and their purpose.

I’m only attempting to generate discussion and I do realize this is prefaced by the imo tag.

I do understand that there are already spawn windows. Randomizing in the context of which I speak is more along the lines of extending the spawn windows to be MUCH larger/longer. Obviously, the world events cannot be completely random because that would introduce the chance of the event never spawning at all. Basically, I’m calling for randomization within much longer time allowances. This would essentially make trying to predict the events useless and produce the same after-effects as total randomization without its negative aspects.

Randomize world event timers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gatharin.2674

Gatharin.2674

After seeing some of the comments about the OP, I guess I should clarify what I mean by randomize. I believe, in the most basic sense, that you should not know that at exactly X:XXpm the shadow behemoth will spawn on server Y. That just pulls you right out of the game. Suddenly the time and the reward of the event are more important than the fact that the battle itself is going on. It becomes just another thing that needs to be done.

As stated above, there obviously has to be time limits on respawn times. As such, spawn windows I have no problem with (though some could stand to be longer). If reporting would be an issue, maybe have something akin to the current system employed for the scarlet invasions (message pops up telling you “Queensdale is in trouble!” for example). In this way, only players who are playing at the time know the event is occurring. This would help alleviate the concern of players lying about the events or having to stand watch for hours waiting for them to pop. This would also alleviate the concern about there not being enough people to complete the events, as they tend to draw a lot of attention when they spawn.

A valid counter argument might be that off-peak times would have problems gathering enough people. However, if you make the events pop maybe four times a day each, the odds are high that many of the people on the server haven’t done that event yet and will still garner a lot of attention.

As a side note, I’m a casual player who plays maybe a few hours a week and not everyday. I’m not trying to reward the people who play longer (though I’m not sure why that is a problem?). I’m trying to figure out a way to inject the meaning back into world-events beside making them harder (which may be a viable solution as well).

WAIT, SAY WHAT?!

Yes, world-events need to be randomized and here is why: they have become a bloated, time-filler, bot-like run on (nearly?) every server. I will admit, I have run the gambit with the “reset zerg” but that only helped me to realize how ridiculous the situation has become. World-events are a joke now, a series of events to feed the rare, exotic, and ascended-hungry masses. They are not what they should be, events that spawn powerful bosses that have the potential to wreak devastation across the land if they aren’t stopped. The days were better before gw2stuff and the like when lions arch was filled with people calling out world events as they spawned. Spontaneity is what kept world-events interesting and, yes, it was good that not everybody in the world could make it there in time.

tl:dr fire shaman -> sb -> dwayna -> etc. is NOT good and completely ruins the nature of the world-events. Randomize the timers and kill the world-event map zergs.

Post-script: I know obtaining rares would become a little more of an issue but that is a problem with the open world loot not the world-events.

On open world loot

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gatharin.2674

Gatharin.2674

I like what the OP said but I would take the tri-color chest idea one step further. There is no guarantee that adding the chest will open the maps back to their full potential. I would guess that if key parts only dropped from random loot, you would have players automatically just hitting the best farming locations on each map.

Accordingly, I suggest that (in addition to the idea above) that certain events must be done on the map for the chest to appear. These events could be spread across the map so as to require people to explore beyond the bare minimum. You may even add a champion event to spawn the chest after these sub-events are done (because champions are drawing a lot of player attention right now).
This plan isn’t perfect for a few reasons (people might farm the events, people might map-hop if the events/chest aren’t up, etc.) but I couldn’t think of a better way of doing it (maybe have certain key parts only drop in certain areas of the map?).

I think we should keep this thread on the first page because it is definitely a huge problem with the game right now and needs addressing. Thoughts?

I know it is rare for a WvW suggestion to surface but here it goes. As the deadline for league participation nears, borderline servers are making last ditch efforts to rise to where they think they belong. In the case of the gold/silver NA league barrier, this is especially apparent. Members of the three servers currently fighting for the sixth and final spot in gold league, maguuma, sea of sorrows, and stormbluff isle, are worried that their chances may be enhanced or diminished all based on the RNG determination of the server matchups in the coming weeks. It has been proposed by various members of all of these servers that we would like a chance to face each other and determine who really belongs in that last spot through a forced matchup. Is this a possibility?

This can be for many reasons apparently. I’ve seen Gregor get stuck, I’ve seen Maybri get stuck. I’ve seen Legionnaire Slashclaw not appear in the charr group and, therefore, the gate doesn’t get blown open (what happened on my server). In any case, tonight I went to my own server and guested to 2 others to get this done and all three were bugged (Maguuma [home], blackgate, and dragonbrand). Agreed, as was mentioned earlier, it also breaks dive master. With so many things affected, this needs to have a priority fix.

One reason why Mag BL is oftentimes mostly or all blue is because the server prioritizes BL defense. This decision (maybe more of a collective mindset) was set early in our history. It may not always be the case but, in general, we will defend our BL over other maps and objectives.

If this is the event right before fighting Taidha, you are supposed to kill the pirates at the cannons on the beach while the lionguard ship uses its cannons to fire at the door. It fires shots every 5-10 seconds. The pirates on the beach are firing cannons at the lionguard ship so it is a race of which one kills the other first.

Maguuma: server-wide event to open balthazar?

in Dynamic Events

Since we don’t have a place on the forums for each server to post things to just their server (cough, suggestion, cough), I had to stick this here. But this might inspire other servers to do likewise.

I wanted to gauge the interest in planning a server-wide event to go to straights of devastation, get enough people to advance 2 or 3 of the paths to orr, and open the temple of balthazar. At least on Maguuma, it is rarely open because people aren’t willing to spend the time to do the long pre-events for a long-shot chance at success at a really hard escort mission. This is conflicted with the fact that many people need those obsidian shards. I propose that we figure out a time to gather as a server (whoever wants to at least) and open the temple, say once a week. You don’t have to come but it might just get more people to cleanse the temple if we had a specific time where you know the event chains are going to be moved forward. So my fellow Maguumans, thoughts?

Effigies grinders are doing it wrong IMO

I do agree Webba that they shouldn’t make you go back and do ones that you have already done again. So, up to a point, I can agree that these effigies will become a slight grind after they are all encountered.
I also agree that this is just my opinion stated in the original post. Still, just because you can do something one way doesn’t mean that it is the intended way. If Anet’s intent was to make us re-explore the world, let’s say, then waypointing will not give you the fun that they intended. I’m not saying everything is perfect. I’m just trying to voice a counter-argument for all of these effigy posts bashing them for being boring and pointless. What I’m saying is, they don’t have to be if one just puts in a little more time and effort.

Okay, I know that all gamers aren’t the same and don’t have the same goals in mind but hear me out. I am reading a lot about how these effigies are just one more gold sink to grind through. You go to a map, locate the effigies, find the nearest waypoints, warp, trigger effigy, then move on to the next waypoint or map if you have all three. While I can understand people wanting the achievement as quickly as possible, I believe that they are severely limiting their enjoyment by doing it this way. The first map I did, I followed the plan I explained above… and it was boring and costly. I decided from then on that I would warp to a map and go to each effigy ON FOOT. And you know what, I had a lot more fun that way. Not only did it cost me a lot less to do this achievement but it also did something far better. It allowed me to explore this beautiful world again since I first finished map completion months ago. I had forgotten just how much I was missing by constantly waypointing again and again. THIS is what made it more enjoyable and a reason I applaud Anet for making the decision to spread them out like this. Yes, it will take more time to do these on foot. But also, yes, it will be more enjoyable and less costly. So while this will be a provocative statement, yes grinders, you are doing it wrong.

I think the past few matches (and most likely this one as well) show that the reason Mags is getting put into these matchups is because we are in the strange position of being about an old T2.5. I believe we have an NA population that is on par or just a tad below the numbers of a T2 but every other timeslot we are more of a T3.5. As long as this remains the case, Mags will continue to not lose too much rating, will be paired with T2 servers, and experience massive overnight (for NA) hemorrhaging of territory (this is by no means an excuse to stop trying though – get out there my fellow Mags and show em what we are capable of!). This suggests another problem. A 2v1 against DB (which I fully support) will only get you something during NA primetime. Otherwise it really is FA out there pretty much alone.

Revert holos HP but keep invulnerability

in Dragon Bash

Gatharin.2674

The OP, IMO, is completely wrong. The increase in HP is good, as it allows people a better chance to get there in time to tag the mobs. The initial invulnerability is bad, because it now makes it harder to reliably tag the mobs. Why is this bad? Before the change, I would tag and then decrease my damage output considerably if others were at the node. to ensure that they also had a chance to tag. Now I have to be much more aggressive to ensure that I get full contribution, making it harder to make sure everyone gets a share.

My suggestion? Give the mobs a few seconds of protection as they fan out, rather than invulnerability, so that people have a few seconds to tag where they are much less likely to kill the mobs outright. This would make the orderly sharing of nodes a lot less stressful.

My only problem with this proposed solution is that it does nothing to alleviate the hardships that the lower level players are currently being stuck with. Unless they lower the HP of the holos or lower their damage output, they are potentially shutting out part of the playerbase.

As for helping to lengthen the time holos are active without invulnerability, protection would be a start. But another reason that it makes sense to let them spread out before letting them being attacked is that it trivializes the combat not to do so. Standing on top of the spawner and spamming aoe abilities, even with protection, is getting “free” damage on the mobs and letting no real combat at all take place. This doesn’t seem like that is what was intended with holo fights.

Revert holos HP but keep invulnerability

in Dragon Bash

In an attempt to reduce the amount of farming the latest update increased the health of holos and also made them invulnerable to damage until they spread out. I believe that the problems were that they were killed too quickly and could not be targeted fast enough for people to get credit. I think the main problem was the ability of AoE to kill them so fast that they went down before people could get to and tag them (even for those at the holo spawner already). I think that these problems were solved with the introduction of spawn invulnerability. AoE is no longer extremely effective and, therefore, increases the amount of time each holo is “active”. Increasing the HP of the holos goes too far in my opinion. While I can understand people being upset that they cannot farm them as easily anymore, that is not the main reason I bring this up. I am a level 80 with full exotics who was solo killing holos on Brisban (level 15-25 zone) for the past few days to try to get the 300 achievement. After the update today, I noticed that I was having a moderately difficult time (maybe just a tad less challenging than orr creatures lets say) beating them alone. This was fine for me but I was hearing a lot of map chat complaints that lower level players who were the “right level” for the map were finding the holo group very difficult to impossible to beat alone. While group play is encouraged, I don’t think forcing lower levels to group up to beat these things to get the achievement is fair to that section of the playerbase. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

NPCs voiced by prominent video game vocalists

I was just roaming around one day when I heard a certain voice. It struck me as familiar but I couldn’t place it. After passing by the same guy a few times it finally came to me. It was the same voice as Balthier from Final Fantasy XII. The voice actor is Gideon Emery. I geeked out for about a minute and then just had to go to the forums and geek out a little more. Any one else have an experience like this?
