If only… The business about melee staves has me worried though. I’m super leery of the idea of melee staff for 2 major reasons. Precedent in both gw1 and gw2 has staves being used as caster foci (object through which to channel magic) and the majority of staff skins reflect this. They tend to be lean and rather fragile looking, definitely not melee weapon material, with a few exceptions.
And perhaps my larger gripe in the face of the “melee staff” hype… Polearms. They are already in the game, just unused. Melee moves with staves and polearms would both be nearly identical, which makes it feel like making staff suddenly melee is quitting right before the finish line… If any of that melee staff stuff comes true for the Rev, I think it will be the cairn of land spears and halberds, simply for the reason above… One guy with a staff will be doing the exact same moves as anyone with a polearm.
What makes it worse, I’m still unclear whether the Rytlock clip of him going at the mordrem was even a hint at all, or a second case of the art dept running wild… (srsly, put a leash on those guys if it was). Still waiting on more clarification of what else the Rev will have… I just keep hoping they change their minds on the whole “no new weapons” thing and allow polearm instead of going the melee staff route.
They said more than one time that they’ll add new weapons in the game for sure.
And the devs know how much we want a polearm on land.
This is assuming capes have been in development at all since they were scrapped during or before beta.
In late 2013 Colin Johanson said in an interview with MattVisual that they were working on it in their free time, and that many devs were really passionate about it.
I’d be willing to bet the capes they could provide without totally FUBARing everyone’s frame rate would be closer to wavy sandwich board backpacks than anything you would want to display regularly. Then there is the issue of putting a cape on a Charr….and then the Charr running on all fours.
The average player has NO idea the processing and graphical resources required to make a single waving flag, much less 100 flowing capes display with any hope of being convincing to anyone. Better they don’t even try than give us some half- kitten d, horridly stiff banner hanging on your back.
Also, there are literally hundreds of things that should be addressed before they spend a moment on even looking at this “issue”.
It could be, or not. If capes are not going to be implemented fine, but I want to hear it from ANet, not from other players assuming things.
All right, this is not the first time someone asks this question, and I know it can become a bit repetitive and frustrating to my fellow players, but sooner or later ANet developers will answer. So I’m gonna try this once again.
Capes. Are they still in development? If yes, did you make any progress since 2013, when Colin said you were working on them in the free time? There is still hope for us to see this back piece in GW2?
I hope to see an answer this time, or in a month I’ll be here again with the same question.
I apologize to anyone who rolled his eyes for reading this question the 100th time.
If there is only one specialization, then it isn’t a specialization.
Specialization implies choice. And please don’t come with “you can choose not to use the specialization, so you do have choice”. For real…
Thats like saying there are different pvp modes to choose from right now. You can choose between playing conquest, and not playing conquest. What a great assortment of choices!
The sPvP example made me smile =) and I agree with you.
Seriously, I’d rather see the expansion postponed instead of having only 1 specialisation per class.
Also, seriously, after all those trailers with implied polearms they want to come out with “Just kidding! Just staves in disguise!!”
Please no, could Gaile Gray say a word about this?
I saw it, he also said no polearms. Just staves designed in a way to resemble polearms.
If that’s true then it’s very very disappointing.

I tend to divide armor sets into two categories: the “actual” armor sets obtainable through crafting, drops, dungeons, etc. and the “fun” armor sets, like the costumes on the gem store. I realize everyone may not make this distinction, but it is how I view things.
You have every right to disagree with me, but I’m still convinced that the images I posted could be in actual sets while remaining in lore.
I like those helms for heavy armor that the OP posted in the attachment.
You have to thank Mr. Kotaki for those =)
(edited by Jandopo.2107)
I realize everybody’s taste varies, but GW has a very distinct artistic style which is why you don’t see helmets similar to what you are describing. FF inspired helms should stay where they belong – in FF.
Also, there are no wizards in GW2 :P
Actually pointed hats are already in the game (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Wizard%27s_Hat), just not available in a normal set. Also, some NPCs wear sothing similar to it, like the Black Lion Trader on the second floor of Divinity’s Reach.
Those helms aren’t FF inspired, Kekai Kotaki worked at ANet not too long ago.
Hi everyone, developers and fellow players!
I played GW2 since 2012 and I always loved the high level of customisation the game offers. Looking at the new armor sets introduced in the game since the release, I noticed some kind of pattern about the style. This bothers me because every new armors looks like “more of the same”, expecially the headgear.
Heavy headgear: IMO too many angel or wing-based sets (ex: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Phalanx_Heavy_Warhelm_Skin – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Glorious_Hero%27s_armor_ – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Carapace_armor_ etc.).
They aren’t bad, but there’s already a fair amount of those. For a change I’d like to see more knight-ish, medieval-inspired helms, adorned with long colourful feathers and tails, badkitten yet elegant. I’ll put some images to show you what I’m talking about (I’m not too good at describing things).
Light headgear: sooo many masks and crowns, few hoods and almost no hats.
So, where are the hats? Expecially those big pointy hats everyone think about when they hear the word “wizard”?
I know, not everyone will like this type of style, but I think there should be at least a couple of sets for those, like me, who love it. And for the sake of variety.
It would be great if some ANet artists read this post and gave it a thought. If I’m unlucky and no one see it, I pray our Lady and Savior Gaile Gray to pass it to them (I know it’s not the most important thing in the world, but I’d really appreciate it). If there is a problem with my suggestion to begin with, I’d love to know it.
I also encourage other players to tell me if they agree or disagree with my opinion and why.
The images of heavy helms are from the gallery of the great artist Kekai Kotaki. The wizard’s hats are probably from Final Fantasy.
Thank you very much for reading =)
When I see comments like “there’s nothing new to do” or “we need fresh content” it just occurred to me to ask if you’re taking LW into account, if you see that as new content and pretty significant chunks of it, at that. (Admittedly, it may not be what you personally have requested, but if the statement is “there’s nothing new” that doesn’t seem quite right.)
Thanks everyone for not barking at me when I asked the question.
Again, the question was not “is it enough?” I really was pointing to it to ask for your impressions of the concept and the execution as continuing, new content in an ever-changing world.
I see. Sorry, I misunderstood the question a bit.
But again, the answer is no. LS sure is content, but not significant chunks of it, not even close.
In my opinion LS is just a very very little part of GW2, 5% or so, but it’s almost the only part that gets significant updates. Which is very disappointing.
Alerno — Taking what you have (and everyone else has) put on the table I do wonder something. I want to ask, and hope nobody will bite my head off here.
You mention wanting to know there will be more to the game. The new and continuing episodes of the Living World count towards that, right? The fact that players know there’s a team working on new content and features, and that there are releases on a regular basis? I fully understand that may not fulfill every desire, but it does show a continuing commitment to “new stuff” for us players, wouldn’t you agree?
Sorry, but no, I disagree.
This season of LS may be good, but it’s just story, a side-dish. The main course for me is WvW, sPvP, dungeons and World Bosses.
A well-developed Living Story is a good idea, but it doesn’t add anything new gameplay wise.
New events and mobs? Only in the new area.
Anything else? No. Just story (which, I repeat, is good but very far from enough).
Thank you for listening to our opinions.
sigh
A lot of us strictly mentioned that we know you have a dedicated team of ~70 (?) people for making LS content. The question that bothers everybody that what the heck the rest of the company do if you have 300+ employee? We get it there are a lot of art, design, audio, community, whatnot members but somewhere, someones doing something, right?
I thought about 20 devs were working on LS, not 70 o.O
(edited by Jandopo.2107)
With all the other clipping and errors in this game (that will never get fixed I’m sure) I think that no one who still plays the game would care about this except some particularly anal designer. It CANNOT be the reason we do not have capes it is just so utterly stupid.
I was thinking the same thing. Especially considering all the huge oversized backpacks they just put into the game that obscure armor and cover up weapons.
I agree with them.
Capes are a must.
One of the problems with a third Solider profession is that the two existing ones are already covering a lot of ground. Adding a “Lancer” profession wouldn’t work because adding non-aquatic spears and tridents means Warriors and Guardians would likely get them as well, so that archetype would be handled by the existing professions. “Samurai” doesn’t work for the same reason; adding Japanese swords to the game means the other Solider professions are likely to get them and can fill that role much easier.
I don’t get your point about new weapon types: I could see a katana wielded by a guardian, a thief and a mesmer…. why do you think it should be forcely added to the warrior as well?
Well, funny how every single Back Item thread always becomes a “WE WANT CAPES!!!” cry.
I hope devs got the message by now.
Can we go back talking about how much brown isn’t an appropriate dye for the Mist Herald back item?
1. More Guild Emblems and Customization Options.
2. Guild Name/Tag on claimed Keeps/Towers in WvW.
3. Guild Tag on chat.
btw: I can see huge airships sieging SMC or Garrison…. epic. That would need to introduce a whole new set of anti-aircraft siege weapons (I can also hear programmers cry about air collision system but hey xD )
That… is going a little too far.
What’s the point in having walls if you can fly above them?
Btw, this is not Star Wars, I don’t want to go in WvW and shot airships or spaceships or whatever.
Like I already stated in this thread https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/About-the-new-Mist-Herald-Back-item/first I think that the color should change when entering in WvW.
The brown should become green/blue/red depending on which color your world is currently associated with.
PROPOSAL OVERVIEW
Guild halls? no. Guild Airships!!!!!!
GOAL OF PROPOSAL
To give the idea of guild halls more functionality than just a meeting place
PROPOSAL FUNCTIONALITY
GvG airship battles with characters jumping accross to each other, Pirates of the carribean style, siege cannons blasting, mid flight battles through clouds, the epicness we all hoped for when we first saw airships in the trailer.
Upgrade and kit your Guild airship out with siege, repair crews, medical crews, pilots and the like to ready yourselves to set sail!
Take your guild on an airship journy through the mists to discover new undiscovered lands and dungeons! Explore the mysteries and dangers within as a guild group! Beware enemy guilds also discovering these pockets of reality!
Possibilities for expansion are pretty awesome.
ASSOCIATED RISKS
I might explode.
I really like this idea, but I don’t want it to replace Guild Halls. I’d like to see it as a GvG game mode.
BUT I wonder if ANet has the technical resources to make it happen…
… any words about this, Mr. Whiteside?
Since this is a WvW themed item, wouldn’t be neat if the color changed depending on which WvW color you are bound?
It would be nice to see this back item change from brown/gray to green/gray or blue/gray or red/gray. Only when you enter WvW of course, outside it’s fine the brow/gray color.
Any thoughts about this idea?
Nice eh?
(Still haven’t seen it in WvW, maybe it’s already like this and I’m gonna look like an idiot o.O )
This is just a short summary of the most mentioned things in this Thread. I hope it helps a little

Ok time for a third topic.
Guild Halls.
I see this subject come up a lot in this thread and while we can talk about other aspects of Guild Halls at some point, let’s try another exercise.
What are the 3 top QOL features you think Guild Halls could provide that maybe couldn’t exist otherwise? Try not to list features that are beyond QOL, but I won’t hold it against you because its hard to do.
1. Special crafting stations to craft unique items (it’s QoL or content? I can’t tell…. maybe something in between).
2. A customizable “room” istance where player’s achievements and accomplishments are shown in some way and provided of an additional chest for the items (again, half QoL half content). I think this could even replace Housing.
3. A place for every guild-related NPC, like the Commendation Trader, the Guild Banker…
There will be a Guild Halls CDI right? I’ll leave the rest for it.
(edited by Jandopo.2107)
While I think guild calendar, alliance system and more guild Missions are interesting topics, they have already been covered by others.
This is my part.
Proposal Overview:
1. More guild emblem options.
2. Visible guild name and tag on claimed keeps/towers.
3. Incentives to claim and defend keeps/towers as a guild (not just rewards).
Goal of Proposal:
1. To add diversification and identity, to increase satisfaction in seeing our own emblem.
2. To increase a guild’s reputation across servers.
3. To give a more fun and rewarding experience to guilds that help the server, and to feel a sense of ownership toward the claimed keep/tower.
Proposal Functionality:
1. Add more colors, backgrounds and symbols (ex: a tower, a ship, a snake…)
2. Allied and ostile players should be able to identify the guild by clicking on the banners on the external walls.
3. The guild should be rewarded with influence and merits for protecting the claimed keep/tower for hours/days. Also, there should be some new keep/tower upgrades accessible only to the guild members. To avoid abuse, the claim should have a little price in merits and golds.
We also need a better system to recognize and reward the defence of wvw objectives, but that’s another story.
Associated Risks:
1. None.
2. None.
3. Debates about which guild should or should not claim a keep.
I hope these suggestions get attention and help you, Chris!
Sir, I have a concern: when the Guild CDI goes live, many people are going to suggest many features ANet won’t be able to develop due to technical limitations.
When this happens, you devs are going to address every single suggestion and say “We can’t do this beacause X”? It’s possible, but you’d waste too much time.
May I suggest to create a CDI sub-thread named “CDI – Technical Q&A” where players just ask “Would you be able to do X?” and you answer “yes” or “no” with just a minimum explanation?
I think this would save us time!
(edited by Jandopo.2107)
2 years in and no guild capes. It’s not going to happen, folks. All those things you loved about GW and are still waiting and hoping to see in GW2 ARE NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.
I don’t agree with the “if they didn’t do it in 2 years they’ll never do it”.
Until there is an official statement I won’t lose hope.
Also, the Guild CDI is gonna start soon, maybe we’ll have the chance to talk about capes.
Ehy! Capes are not “just another backpiece”, they are THE backpiece, capes bring color, epicness and identity.
I hope ANet is still working on them.
Ok, if we’re talking about style…
Heavy armor: I’d like to have more plate and “knight-ish” looking sets to choose.
Medium armor: I’m ok with ANet style on this category. Just more of the same =)
Light armor: I’d like to have at least 1 or 2 sets of “classic” looking wizard, with pointed hat and robe, just a bit more kitten.
Here some examples of my favourite types of heavy and light armors.
Three heavy armors:
- Platemail.
- Obsidian.
- Elite Templar.
… not outfits of course.

Morning Zoso,
I am looking forward to it to. I will try to get the topic started on Thursday of next week. Just need to get some things finished so I can give the CDI the attention it will need.
Chris
Sir, can I ask you a couple things about your technology?
I have some ideas for the Guild CDIs, but it would be pointless to describe them if ANet doesn’t have the material resources to work on them ^^
Actually, re-thinking about this…
When the Guild CDI goes live, many people are going to suggest many features ANet won’t be able to develop due to technical limitations.
When this happens, you devs are going to address every single suggestion and say “We can’t do this beacause X”? It’s possible, but you’d waste too much time.
How about creating a CDI sub-thread named “CDI – Technical Q&A” where players just ask “Would you be able to do X?” and you answer “yes” or “no” with just a minimum explanation?
In this way we would save time and space!

Capes, more quivers, sashimono/samurai banner.
This CDI is going to be intense!!
I personally think that a paid expansion would do more harm than good at this point.
People have gotten used to free content every 2 weeks, and if they suddenly had to wait 6+ months without content and then be forced to pay for it they most likely wouldn’t like it too much.
ArenaNet have gotten themselves into this “mess” of the Living Story. Now they either prove that it actually IS like an expansion, or they call defeat and will lose most of their playerbase since people won’t stay with a company that doesn’t know what it is doing.
Excuse me?
Almost everybody I talked about, in my guild and on forums, would LOVE an expansion and pay for it.
Obviously, the said expansion shoud be substancial in every category of the game: WvW, sPvP, maps, dungeons, world bosses, guilds, combat.
“People won’t stay with a company that doesn’t know what is doing.”
…
Do you realise that the game is already very diffent from their original statement?
Do you think that people would leave GW2 because content is FINALLY being added under in the shape of expansion? Then listen to me: I don’t know anybody who’d do that, actually many people whould quit GW2 if an expansion is NOT being added.
A paid expansion would pull developers away from creating things for us to do now.
Not a good idea and would be counter to the original model they set up. Essentially, it would create a dead game with injections of content every few years.
A steady release of smaller content packets is a better model than large one time bursts of content followed by months of dead playtime.
How do you know that? In 2 years ANet never released a content pack.
(edited by Jandopo.2107)
guys, can u guys imagine the collision system working on a event or in wvw (reset night mostly).
FPS drops, culling etc, i imagine more objets with those validation game would suffer, for some reason they have armors with loads of clipping issues, less stuff to read.
1. Devs are improving the Megaserver technology, we can’t be sure of how many informations it can handle.
2. In WvW when there are too many characters, some of them are replaced by standard models. They could use this solution. If cape animations are too much to handle, they could disappear momentarily.
If capes became backpieces, how would shields and weapons stowed on the back interact with said capes?
Should the shields and weapons ‘float’ above the cape? Should the cape be static so it would not interfere with said ‘floating’ weapons? Should the cape cover the weapons/shields? Let them clip massively?
How would you, as a designer, solve these issues?
As a designer I’d say there are 2 obvious ways to do this:
1. Have weapons/shields appear OVER the cape.
2. Have them work in the same way as large backpieces do. I’ve got a nooby charr that has the starter (engi) Back pack. I’ve equipped a shield to him to see how that works.See the images below, but basically when the shield is stowed the backpiece simply vanishes and the shield becomes the priority.
Either way would work I guess, but I’d prefer it is the cape stayed visible at all time. (My main is an Ele so it doesn’t really affect me).
How about the contrary? How about the shield being invisible and appear only in combat and having the cape visible all the time?
I think it would be a good solution.
ANet can neither confirm nor deny at this time whether or not they are currently working on guild capes.
Well, even if they would be greatly appreciated, capes are not a major feature. Giving us an update on their development wouldn’t hurt anyone.
Someone should ask devs about capes at PAX.
(edited by Jandopo.2107)
Yeah, capes should really be implemented, they are part of GW universe.
But not in the gem store… I’m okay with a couple of premium capes, but most of them should be obtainable ingame.
Do you?
The main things that came out of that CDI was different colors for tags and account-bound tags.
Both which we are getting now.
Why do I remember suggestions about a new Commander UI?
I’m starting to think I’m merging my CDI memories with maybe other threads…
If that’s the case, I’m extremely sorry.
Yeah… I see question marks but I have the feeling you’re not so much interested in asking any questions as much as insulting. It’s that 80% rule I guess (you know that 80% of all questions are actually statements).
You are wrong. I don’t want to be insulting, I assure you that.
I’m just saying that I saw players write pages and pages of constructive suggestions in that CDI. If everything we propose is going to be forgiven then where’s the point in doing it?
Note i am up to date with all the comments since last night.
Chris
Mr. Whiteside, I have a question.
Do you remember the Commander CDI 1 year ago? Why we got only 3 more colors out of it? I love the idea of CDI, but after this I wonder if the community’s time and effort are wasted…
Or maybe the big improvements to the commander system are yet to come?
Don’t know what community you’re thinking of. I still have a great amount of faith in ArenaNet and have enjoyed all of their updates thus far. I am quite confident in saying that a large majority of the playerbase have also enjoyed them.
We’re in the same community mate and I applaud to your patience, because lately I’ve been talking to many players, inside and outside my guilds, in mmorpg forums, on reddit, everywhere, and many MANY of us are tired of waiting.
I still didn’t lose all of my faith, afterall this game is my favourite mmo. But I’m starting to consider if the we’ll ever see new contents. Not only little improvements here and there.
ALSO, what do you have to say about the Commander CDI? People put time and effort in that thread and what we got? 3 more colors. Really?
Dear ArenaNet,
I think it’s pretty clear by now: your community is losing faith in you.
Some player lost it a while ago, but many still hoped that SOMETHING BIG was cooking in the background.
And what we get?
Do you think LS and feature packs (which is mostly QoL features and very small changes) are enough to keep people interested? The truth is that the vast majority of us played them only to endure our waiting for something bigger.
Someone can’t even play other games, because GW2 has SO much potential, and the combat system is SO good that they can’t go back.
The game needs more content: WvW, sPvP, dungeons, maps, weapons, world bosses, guild activities. To put it in one word, an expansion.
Everyone would love that, and gladly pay for it.
Give us a date, something to look forward to. You can’t drag us forever.
One more thing: I remeber a CDI on the commander system a year ago. Many people wrote passionately their ideas and spent time giving long suggestions.
And you guys come out with 3 new colors? Nothing else?
That’s… depressing. And offensive.
Thank you for reading.
It’s the Christmas present you always wanted, but never received.
Capes? Cloaks?

Guys, enough with this “it’s a fantasy game, keep realistic stuff out of this”. Stop abusing the term “fantasy”.
Do you know The Lord of the Rings? Yes. Is it Fantasy? Of course. Do people in LotR wield stuff like this?
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/File:Crystal_Guardian.jpg
Hell no!
Like everyone said, it’s ok to have some TERA-style weapons, of course!
But I’d really like to have more skins like this:
- http://wiki.guildwars.com/images/4/48/Bartholos%27_Shining_Blade.jpg
- http://wiki.guildwars.com/images/a/a1/Judgment.jpg
- http://wiki.guildwars.com/images/c/c7/Rajazan%27s_Fervor.jpg
- http://wiki.guildwars.com/images/f/f5/The_Holy_Avenger.jpg
Expecially that Shining Blade.
Put that “~Mounts” away.
I’d love to see a greatsword flamberge-style!
http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130407014405/forgottenrealms/images/b/b5/1345563589539.jpg
This should be my top 5 list:
- Halberd (two-handed): Guardian, Elementalist, Ranger.
- Greataxe (two-handed): Warrior, Necromancer.
- Sickle (one-handed): Necromancer, Thief, Mesmer.
- Flail (one-handed): Warrior, Engineer. Because engi totally needs melee weapons.
- Crossbow (two-handed, ranged): Ranger, Thief, Engineer.
Also, javelin would be a cool one-handed ranged weapon.
(edited by Jandopo.2107)
I don’t give a kitten about clipping.
CAPES. ARE. PRIORITY.
I’m surprised, when I asked Colin about new weapons and capes I didn’t really expected him to answer!
Not that we got much from those answers… sigh
