Path of Fire content milestone

President -- ArenaNet

Hi all,

Today we hit an internal milestone: we locked down all content and feature development for Path of Fire. We now move the game to our staging servers and start final preparations for launch.

This expansion is all about content, and today’s milestone marks the completion of eighteen months of content creation. It’s been a labor of love for the team. We hope we’ve brought each story chapter, each open-world zone, and each mount up to the level of what you experienced in the demos last month.

Thanks to everyone who joined the demos and the stress tests. We used those tests to inform our final balance tweaks, and to squash some bizarre bugs that we could only reproduce under heavy load, like the one where Raptors would randomly show up in non-demo maps.

We’re in the home stretch. Eleven days to launch! We can’t wait to play Path of Fire with you!

I don’t understand the allure of outfits, from a player’s point of view. Apart from the issues of dye channels and shoulders, everyone who wears them looks alike – which seems the very antithesis of what this game is about (Fashion Wars 2). You pay for them, and yet you look like other people wearing them. /shrug Each to his own, I guess.

People manage to look alike even without outfits.

PoF— seems to be nothing but a gold sink to me and most likely the last nail in the coffin. Major mistake in the direction of the game and it will cost them (imho and I entitled to it).

Wait, what makes it a gold sink? What exactly will they be forcing you to spend gold on in PoF?

if you not read this topic on it I think you find it a good read on why it is the new pack is going to be a major gold sink .

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Unidentified-gear-Please-No-No-No-Nooooo/page/11#post6743375

I’m not brave enough to venture more than a few posts into that thread, tbh.

But regardless, I’m not sure how unidentified gear can possibly be a gold sink. If it’s costing you more gold to identify the gear than you’re making from the gear itself, then that eliminates any reason to identify it in the first place, thus saving you time and inventory space. Conversely, if identifying the gear ends up being profitable, that’s the exact opposite of a gold sink. Although if there’s something I’m missing about this topic, I’d love to read about it without digging through 11 pages of “stop making me work for my loot” posts

Hello Anet! I would highly appreciate it if you gave players the ability to turn Selfless Potion permanently toggled on/off. I have worked hard to complete my battle angel outfit and the halo ring is a crucial part of it.

Currently any map changes, deaths, going into dungeon, and other transformations will toggle the potion off. Unfortunately this happens too often when I am doing dailies, WvW, dungeons, fractals, as there are frequent instance/map changes. I am diligently double-clicking each time to re-apply my halo and I am slowly going crazy! It is as if we had to re-equip our weapon each time we fight. It would mean the world to me if the halo stayed there permanently when I decide to turn it on, just like the check-mark in outfits.

Thank you for listening to my concern it would improve my guild wars 2 life greatly

Playing a toon of the opposite gender?

I mean like, I get it if you’re suffering from the gender dysphoria mental disorder, then it would be a different story I guess. But I’m just a regular dude so, gender is not really something I’m concerned with or think about.

Well, that’s the point- when you are cis you don’t have the dysphoria which someone who is trans might. Cis in this instance is intended as the opposite of trans.

So, yeah, you are just a regular dude.

Please only allow one aura effect

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Palador.2170

The solution isn’t “less auras”, it’s “more aura choices”.

Right now, we have a few different aura choices and … well … they don’t go together very well, do they? It quickly becomes something very ugly.

So, let’s take what auras we have, and add in others that are made to mesh with them, and build in the same theme. Take the Koda’s Flame one, for example. It’s an inner fire in the person’s chest. Not bad, right? Now, add in shoulders that make a burning halo above the head. Add in the glowing red eyes mask, and suddenly you have a look that works, and is more than just visual screen clutter.

Just about every aura could be worked with in this way. It would allow people to more fully customize their characters while showing off their hard work, and make more coherent style choices while doing so. Fashion choice, instead of visual static.

Sarcasm, delivered with a
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

You know what I find odd about these discussions: so many people talk about the importance of being able to identify with the character, but that only ever seems to apply to their gender matching yours. Nothing else.

In my first post I mentioned that all of my characters are fundamentally not me, regardless of their gender and appearance. You know why? They kill people. They’ve all killed a lot of people, without hesitation or remorse or any attempt to consider whether there may be an alternative solution. But somehow that doesn’t matter.

I can play a tiny grey rodent whose only solution to a rival group of scientists showing insufficient consideration for ethics in their research is to slaughter them all on sight, and as long as their genitalia matches mine I can “relate to them on a deep level” and pretend they are me. But if he’s a boy and I’m a girl then we’re totally different and can never relate?

That makes absolutely no sense to me.

Honestly I wouldn’t want my characters to be me. Within the game it just wouldn’t work – if they were me they’d be the merchants staying in town and letting other idiots go out and get themselves killed. (Or judging by my old posts in the lore forum asking why we’ve never tried talking to the Elder Dragons and trying to reach a compromise instead of trying to wipe out a race older than humanity just because they’re a threat to us.)

And the other way around, if I acted in real life like my characters do in games…I don’t even want to think about it. (Especially since in my other MMO one of my alts is a psychotic vampire assassin who kills people for food, for money, for fun…he once killed a man for bumping into him in the street and another for being annoyingly repetitive.)

Considered in that perspective their gender seems absolutely trivial and if the characters I play in video games reflects who I am then showing masculine traits (or lesbian traits, depending on whose view you go with) is the least of my worries.

You don’t need HoT to play PoF. You do need a level 80 character though.

If you only buy PoF, you will not get any HoT specific features:

  • HoT elite specs
  • HoT masteries, including gliding
  • HoT legendaries
  • HoT raids
  • Scribe profession
  • Living story season 3 (as someone who has not logged in during any of the episode releases, you’ll also need to buy them with gems… although if you log in game now, you at least have ep 6 “banked” in case you buy HoT later)

There are certain features that have been released, but are not tied to HoT

  • Fractals inc the new ones
  • WvW changes
  • Any open world events in core maps (Shatterer revamp, Current Events)

What exactly do you want to hear from us now? Of course you are done within a few weeks by the way you play that game. You would be in any game that is out there to play.

Guildwars 2 is about making your own goals and tasks to keep you motivated. And thats pretty simple as it has soooo many options and possibilities.

If I rush thru the content, I would be done (with a normal online time spend) in 3 days with the main Story, 2 days LW2, 3 days Hot and again 2 days LW3, if I am going to rush.

So what is your point now? Go head out to the world and explore it. Do events, play with friends, try to find hidden or hard to get acivements. Repeat the Story in case you maybe missed something. Or just grind your butt off for something you want.
You cant expect the game to keep you entertained and motivated when you are rushing it. Maybe do a event evening with your Guild on one of the maps. This can be so much fun, and maybe you will find some good loot? especialy with the new bountys that are coming. They are soooo much fun I am telling you.

Guildwars 2 is not and has never been one of those games where you go like: “Oh Story done, okay guys, the game is over. I will be back when the next expansion comes out.”

Just as an example: last monday I finished the Main Story for the I guess 8th time? And guess what, there still has been parts I was suprised about. Maybe because I didnt noticed or wasnt paying attention. I dont know.

So, as a conclusion: make your own goals in this game, step by step, and you will see how long a expansion can last for you. It took me 6 months of gameplay until I was able to say “Okay guys, I am done with HoT now. I did it!”. And no, it was not after I have killed mordremoth

GW2s most prestigious costume?

Just for fun I set myself the challenge of putting together GW2’s most prestigious costume – all the rarest, hardest to obtain skins and most expensive dyes together. Surely a thing of glory to behold!

My attempt is below and since a lot has changed since I last tried this in 2014 and I think there’s many more options now I’d love to hear your thoughts and maybe even see some alternate takes on it.

Featured in my attempt is:

  • Celebration Hat (free give-away during the headstart weekend)
  • Glorious Hero’s Shoulderguards (place 1st in a PvP tournament)
  • Perfected Envoy Jerkin (legendary armour)
  • Fire God’s Vambraces (30 Hall of Monuments points)
  • Mistforged Triumphant Hero’s Legguards (1900 WvW rank + purchase earlier versions)
  • Invisible Boots (about 2,000-3,000 gold)
  • Eternity (combine both other legendary greatswords)
  • Warbringer (legendary WvW backpack)

Dyes are Permafrost, Shadow Abyss, Scorched and Bloody Red with a combined price of about 1,550g (and that’s using buy orders).

[Suggestion] Inactive Name Cleanup

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: IndigoSundown.5419

IndigoSundown.5419

Why this is a bad idea:

  1. The Cost: People who lose a name due to this suggested change and who come back to the game get angry. Maybe they deal with it. Maybe they submit a ticket (CSR costs). Maybe they write angry forum posts or badmouth the game elsewhere (bad publicity). Also, anyone whose name was dropped has to go through the annoyance of renaming, whether the name(s) they used were sought after or not. More annoyance leads to more upset, more complaints, and more bad publicity.
  2. The Benefit: for each sought-after name, one (and one only) player will get that name. Anyone else who wants that name will be upset or angry. Some of them will blame ANet because the way ANet implemented the feature (the timing was disadvantageous to their schedule). For every sought-after name there will be dozens if not thousands of names lost that no one wanted.

The cost in public relations alone far outweighs the potential benefit.

is "waste of dev time" a real arguement?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

People should request whatever features they like in a game. As long as they don’t make claims that it’s easy or try to claim it’s what the majority wants. I frequently +1 the former and I just as frequently will post quotes/paraphrases from ANet or other relevant information about the latter.
—————————————————

I’ve never argued that something shouldn’t be requested because it would take too much dev time. I will continue to point out that ANet must prioritize among all the ideas we provide (both good & bad), and that includes considering whether something uses a lot of resources, as well as how many people would enjoy it.

As an example, people are going to keep asking for a replayable LS1: it was a memorable part of the game that a lot of people missed, there’s a ton of achievements, and for the unique rewards (less so from today forward, thanks to Memory Boxes). People will also ask for new races. I support that. I’m even on record saying that I would like those things.

I will, however, continue to step in when people claim “ANet should do this” or “this should be a priority” or “this wouldn’t be any harder than [fill in the feature]”.

The first set of statements are about personal preferences, about interests, about hopes for the game. The second set are statements about what’s practical, about what’s best for the community, about, well, priorities. People can have a preference, but it’s not okay to misinterpret facts in support of those preferences.

So for example, I can’t recall anyone actually saying, "ANet doesn’t have time to preserve ranger pet names. I paraphrased what ANet told us, which was that it was more complicated than we thought, it took more time than we thought, and it wasn’t likely to happen soon (which, keep in mind: it didn’t happen for a long, long time).

And while I trust ANet to know their business about the current state of the code, it surprised and disappointed me that they didn’t arrange the data to be flexible enough — even if we couldn’t have 40 pet names/character from day one, why did they set it up to make that more difficult to add later?

In short: I support people asking for whatever they want, regardless of effort involved. And, I also think it’s a good idea for us to point out when stuff is more difficult than people make it out to be.

What you’re asking for isn’t true loyalty – its the ability to force people to be exclusive to your guild.

Loyalty to a guild is shown through active support of that guild – helping with upgrades, placing hall decorations, participating in guild activities, etc.

Requiring 100% representation is completely at the discretion of the guild leader, but – if you are going to take that drastic measure, it falls to you to establish a monitoring system and punishments for players that break your rules and rewards for those that are completely loyal.

I’ve been leading a fairly large and very active guild for years. They best way to build loyalty among members is to earn it. In my guild, what we did was create a small council of leaders who are responsible for coming up with and leading fun activities throughout the week -spanning across open world, raids, wvw, pvp and others. By giving the members a reason to be online and doing things with the guild, they are more apt to support the guild when needed – as they did last week when we asked for gold to purchase a custom pvp arena specifically for testing beta elite specs this past weekend.

So to repeat and summarize – a 100% rep button isn’t needed and wouldn’t be an indicator of guild loyalty anyway. If you earn member loyalty, they will be there when the guild needs them.

Transmutation Charges Crisis

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: StinVec.3621

StinVec.3621

I have 26ish characters that I completely re-fashioned many times and have never bought charges via any means. I do not PvP but I’ve not really encountered issues of running low on transmutation charges.

If you are interested:
Just as some players would ‘farm’ black lion keys with new characters, you can have a character slot dedicated to doing a ‘T Charge Run’ to earn a couple in about 10 minutes.
Yep, my actual character name

  • Make a sylvari and map complete The Grove
  • Go to Rata Sum and map complete it
  • Delete > Repeat.
  • Optimized run gives 2 charges in about 10-12 minutes (depending on instance boss availability)

You could go and do other cities, but by the time you complete just one of the other cities (Divinity’s Reach, Hoelbrak or Black Citadel) you could have already re-created the character and gotten The Grove done and be moving on to Rata Sum again. (exception being Black Citadel where an optimized path might be worth including in the run, barely)

So:

  • Make a quick sylvari character (or asura, but I feel sylvari starter instance is done slightly quicker)
  • After instance, turn around and enter The Grove (or Rata Sum)
  • Run through and ‘map complete’ the city (optimal path can be figured after a few runs)
  • Waypoint to outside Rata Sum (or The Grove) and run in
  • Run through and ‘map complete’ the city (again, figuring optimal path as you do the runs helps decrease overall run time)

__

I feel 2 charges in 10ish minutes is decent, especially since you can choose to take your time, chat, do other things or even take a break and pick up where you left off and are not locked in to an activity like taking part in PvP.
(You you can also sell/scrap some starter items for a few copper/silver if so inclined.)

If you would like to do a few test runs and follow me around to learn what I feel are decently optimal paths, contact me in-game and we can do a few runs. I had liked to try to get ‘my best time’ when doing them, but I’ve not done them for a while so I may be a bit rusty on tweaks to shave 1-3 seconds off total run time.

Elite specs needed to be done in PvP and WvW bc this is how to tell class balance. everything would be too easy in pve. there are some simpler pve npcs in HotM.

Then they should have called that a beta. Demo is not for feedback. Demo supposed to show off the game and create good a impression.

It is both, demo and beta or maybe it is Beta demoN!

Cyninja.2954

Most points as to why there changes are bad were already pointed out and I wholeheartedly agree.

Here is the big one though which makes all of this nonsens, well nonsense:

“You’re assuming every player will have PoF and access to mounts, which will not be the case.”

That’s all that needs to be said to shoot down any of these rubbish ideas.

“Having mounts locked behind an expansion probably means nothing like this will ever happen unless they think it will boost exp pack sales but for the sake of brainstorming” i acknowledge this what i want is ideas to deal with this and your own ideas.

There is nothing to deal with. Arenanet has a business and design model in place. You are literally asking for people to brainstorm about something that will not happen or is not likely to happen at any point in time.

You could have just as well started a thread about tee and have people brainstorm via what crazy ways tee could be made. Actually that might have been more enjoyable than debating player restrictive game design decisions.

You want to brainstorm, here is my take on the ideas:

- it’s never a good idea to restrict player freedoms which were already in place
- less convenience or reduction in convenience are very tricky subjects and need to be dealt with very very carefully
- the entire wp and movement system is part of core tyrias design as well as connected to other aspects like world completion

Your ideas are basically taking a hammer to a glass window and smahing it when there was nothing wrong with it in the first place.

As Neural said, if you want to not waypoint, don’t waypoint but ride your mount instead. “Problem” solved.

I don’t have an issue with the unidentified gear, per se. I hadn’t noticed that I got anything other than greens from them when I identified them, but maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention (or maybe I just had no luck). I enjoy the space saving that the stacking feature offers, and considering these are not bound in any way, I could choose to stick a stack on the trading post for someone that wants to play the identification gambling game. Which, might be an decent way to make a few silver when they xpac goes live.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Is it weird that I have used all three of my accounts just to play this mastery over and over? MAYBE! but that’s ok! I get to live my dream of proving myself as a Chef! I have become very familiar with the ingredients to make the Tajine stew! and have practiced and, hopefully, masted the most efficient way to use my kitchen work space \o/!

In all seriousness though, I love this new mastery! it was engaging and fun! I cant wait to see what else areanet does with the mysteries in this expansion! (I hope a return of the chef! BUT! only this time the players will be asking for the ingredients! MUAHAHAHA)

For anyone who has had a tough time with the mastery
At first its a bit tough cause it can be hard to hear what the chef is saying and where to find the ingredient he calls for. what helped me was going through it a few times to figure out where everything is! as well as turn on the NPC dialog under the chat options, then you can read what he called for in case you missed it. also! make sure you throw it after he stops moving. throwing it at him while he is moving can be annoying, believe me! I believe its on a timer! so you have to survive roughly 2 minutes and 45 seconds, but I could be wrong on that.
