Make elemental attunement baseline for personnal boon application and a grandmaster trait to share the boons with others, that’d be fine. But having to drop one of the two is way too much and downright kittened.

I like how devs nerf eles and make us choose between the two strongest assests of the class while allowing thieves to access both panic strike and executionner. Way 2 go.

Why do people NOT run meta?

in PvP

Posted by: KarsaiB.9475

KarsaiB.9475

So, by not playing what’s commonly accepted as “meta”, you’re generally dragging your team down. Now, you might experiment something with potential, or just play a far more fun spec, everyone does it. But no amount of “skill” will outweight that same amount put into playing something optimal, nor will a “surprise factor” that you might gain throughout the first 30 seconds of a match. Meta has nothing to do with playing safe, it has all to do with efficiency.

The problem is that the game shifts due to the tournaments. Hambow warrior was not true meta until it won in the CC vs SYNC match. Then it was EVERYWHERE.

If people only ran the meta, the meta would never change. Rom and Tarcis ran shoutbow when it wasn’t meta, now everyone uses it.

this.

As I’ve said in first page, the metagame is the most optimal way to win. Playing something that counters a very wide spread strategy is in no way shape or form a random fun build. Hambow was beating down necros and spirit rangers at the time, hence became very widely used, for a very long time.

You’re all approaching this wrong, thinking meta is some kind of group acceptance or validation or w/e. The meta is NOT the most played build. A build being played the most is a consequence of it being generally called metagame, because it is simply what works best in the current situation. The counter to hambow was celestial heavy comps, and is still right now the metagame because it’s still best to run it, despite having generally added another berzerker, making killing celes fairly easy. The moment a single team figures out the counter and starts playing it, that will be the “meta”.

And for the record, Tarcis started playing hambow first on NA, and xjnni made it popular on EU way before CC won PAX.

Why do people NOT run meta?

in PvP

Posted by: KarsaiB.9475

KarsaiB.9475

The meta are the safest builds for the bad to average players (also working with good players obviously), but they are not the best builds or the only good builds by far.

Running something unpredictable has a clear advantage specially if you practice and master your own build.

Also the meta is made for PPT in mind mostly, actual fighting is not the focus of the meta. Some people play games to fight and test their skills, not sit on points.

That’s a quite terrible post, I have to say..

Metas exist in all games with some form of competitive play, be it hardcore (Starcraft, pretty much any fighting game,…) or more casual (mobas, gw2, hearthstone,..) It is, simply put, the most efficient way of winning the game, by the strict definition of it, without adding those virtual “rules of honor” that say people playing “high risk high reward” builds are more deserving and people that don’t and stick to what’s refered to as “metagame”, are playing safer or are simply lesser players.
The people making those statements are called, so-to-speak, “scrubs” (refer to “Playing to win”, by David Sirlin).

As a result, any player that is willing to WIN THE GAME, hence in this case, reaching 500 points before the ennemy, will play something that is tailored for that purpose : On point brawling, skirmishing, mobility, etc.

Let’s be clear, in the end, it’s only a game, and fairly casual at that. But you pretending one thing and its opposite is just non-sensical and fairly hypocrit.

Just my 2 cents.

I’m wondering why you don’t invite all players from the main pvp teams on both EU and NA. Considering you’re advertising Stronghold and the Revenant so much, it’d be smart to give players that fuel the scene the opportunity to test and learn the map and class BEFORE big tournaments instead of having to learn on the fly, or worse, have some teams have access and others not… That’s how any company would do if they were wanting a healthy scene with teams that actually have game knowledge and legitimacy, not just 5 people that like playing together and have a lot of free time.

And yea, I’m pretty kittened not being considered “loyal enough” or not “elligible enough” or whatever.

My main problem with this S/D build is the damage it can put out when it has 0 points in critical strikes.

OK, I’m going to stop you right there.

How about how warriors and guardians can both set up a tank spec in traits, then use fire + air/intelligence sigils, strength runes and zerker ammy and still live through tons of damage (unlike the thief) and still put out good damage?

Because you spec for actual trait effects, and not for the +100-300 stats u get from investing into certain trait lines… Feline Grace, Sleight of Hand, those are kittened and need toning down, as well as air-fire combo, as pointed above.
Also, s/d thief DOES live through tons of damage, despite its role…

Suggestion of a new kind of game in spvp.

KarsaiB.9475

I am really loving the discussion going on in this thread. This is a testament to how awesome our community is! Alright so now that we have flushed out some ideas let me give you some guide lines and let me know if we can design around it.

1. Must be able to be hot join-able
* Not easily griefed and allow players to be able to jump in and out
2. Must fit the 5 on 5 standard
3. Can fit our standard PvP match time (15 mins)
4. (Would Be Nice) Shout castable

Alright let me know how your ideas fit or change with these standards.

I don’t think you can come up with good new game modes if you try to adapt them from the current standards. Different game modes should have different standards. Especially if going for a moba-like mode :

1. Instead of being “hotjoinable”, why not having a training mode for that specific mode, kinda like ARAM in LoL, 5 vs 5 in one lane and each an objective to defend/assault ennemy objective.
Having a “hotjoinable” moba like mode ruins the immersion and the players don’t even rly care because they can do whatever they want ! They can still hj conquest if they wanna run around killing ppl in spvp but pls, no hotjoin in other modes.

2. Perfectly fine for most modes but having a 2v2/1v1 training mode could be interesting as well.

3. THAT is a huuuuge mistake in my opinion. 15 minutes games tend to be anti climactic. You don’t really have early, mid and late game phases with 15 minutes only games. In all games, players tend to crave for very intense, long games. Those games are EPIC because they involve very stressful and impactful decision making over an extended period of time that allows truely better players, that have an in depth understanding of the game and how to approach it, to make a huge difference because every little detail counts in super late game ! 15 minutes only games tend to be very forgiving, which takes away a lot of the depth and pleasure to play. No time limit is so much more exciting as the game will end either when you completely beat your opponent or get beaten, not by some preset timer….
Also, just implement a resign button after 15 minutes timer just in case ppl don’t wanna suffer through being rolled over by much stronger opponents.

4. Probably the most important one, that should be taken care of first and foremost imo.

Suggestion of a new kind of game in spvp.

in PvP

Posted by: KarsaiB.9475

KarsaiB.9475

Gonna put down some ideas if anyone wants to contribute. Basically was thinking about how GW2 would fit into a MOBA like game-mode; and the mechanics behind progression could be the glue which holds it together.

To me, there are two things that progression needs to address (that would otherwise cause issues in a gw2 MOBA game type).

  • Absence of specific roles in builds (at least from a MOBA perspective)
  • Specific classes/builds being OP (thieves could be insane)

Here’s some casual suggestions
- choose a stat path at the start of the game, where stats are gained on level up. Deliberately make the celestial path grant an even higher stat coefficient on level than it would now (making specific ‘balanced’ builds; ele turret engi etc OP in the later game, and weaker at the start due to their reliance on stats for sustain/damage output).

- Give a key role to thieves/Mesmer/dps guard to manage certain mobs (akin to a jungler). A zerker stat allocation should make them good at this role, but worse at the carry due to lack celestial builds suitable for this role.

- Make the ‘strategy’ of progression mid match be trait (or even weapon) specific, rather than stat specific. i.e rather than running more armor to counter a high level direct dmg player, you might have to forgo some condi removal in your trait selection (for stability, dd mitigation, more dps etc), or swap to a weapon setup which is best suited for dealing with them.

Just some ideas anyway, worth discussing thisss

edt: ppl need to start with 6 trait points IMO however; most builds need this much to be ‘playable’.

Yes yes yes and yes. It’d solve many balance issues by itself considering the so called op things would only become op if the ennemy slacks while having an advantage over them early/midgame.

In LoL, a bruiser type character, like Jax, with triforce and botrk would be op if you could have access to those items right away, and that’s what celestial specs are like atm. But considering how the team having a jax has to slow play and survive/trade efficiently early and mid game, it makes it rewarding and fair. On the other hand, the ennemy can pick a really strong early/mid game comp, and focus on having a fast game ending strategy, or simply chose to pick an equally strong late game comp and simply outplay their opponent.

With proper itemization and meaningful secondary mechanics, this is when the magic happens and the depth comes in. Note down what phaeton said, please, it’s golden.

KarasiB
Can you try and come up with the mechanics and secondary objectives behind this MOBA like game mode in our game?

No time limit anymore.

I’d like to have a true itemization, making players way weaker at start compared to late game, with a lot of different paths they could go for depending on the situation/seeing what the ennemies builds tend to go for.

Maybe use conquest as a base, points not being the goal anymore but the actual currency (no score cap). Players would have their personnal score plus the teams global score to spend each.

Introduce minion waves obviously, last hitting a minion granting 1 point to the last hitter. Not sure what the patterns would be tho.

Have stronger creatures and camps being introduced, spawn at regular intervals granting meaningful individual and group bonusses (including 2 or more stronger ones like chieftain and svanir, NOT soloable early/midgame). If a player carrying an individual buff gets killed, the player getting the killing blow gets the remaining duration of the effect for himself or refreshes the effect if he is already benefitting from it.

Also perhaps use a revamped, larger legacy of the foefire map for this, killing lord being the ultimate goal. No close/far point anymore but 2 equally placed sidenodes (or maybe 1 point close to both bases and 1 further off with better tick/sec).

Place turrets dealing Agony Damage at strategic spots (including inside bases obviously) so players would have to buy AR stats through itemization to access inner turrets safely/wait for minion waves.

That’s what I can think of from the top of my head, could refine the concept way more. But yeah, please, make it happen.

As I said, it was supposed to be a private scrimming session, in preparation of the ToL EU that was to take place the following day.

We clearly specified before our games that we’d like to keep quiet about it, no matter how it went.
From what I’ve understood, some of the Apex team members bragged about after those games (check out that mature and modest behaviour), leading in pretty much the whole community knowing about them, and mentionning those all over the place as if it was a fact : Apex beat Monks 2-1 on NA servers, hence Apex is better than Monks, that kind of jazz. Blu even mentionned it in front of 2k viewers on the ToL NA semi-finals stream yday etc.

Don’t get me wrong, people can say and think what they want, but referring to training sessions they should never have heard of in the first place to rate a team, especially considering the latency issues, is infuriating and unfair.

We, as a team, agree, and I’m sure you will understand, can not abide such a disrespectful approach. As such, while it saddens us, we will not scrim Apex in the future, unless we’re provided with sufficient, honest explanations and apologies.

It is funny because I think it was you who posted multiple times the loss of CC vs the german shoutcaster team in the twitch chat of EU ToL.

You don’t know the whole story. I did that because Super stated before all that happened that “TCG beat Monks 500 – 50 last time they faced in teamQ, blahblahblah” while we won the last 2 teamQs we played vs TCG before the tourny. Now you might not know but there’re quite alot of tensions between CC members and us, for childish reasons, on both sides. We’re very tribal towards one other, I don’t expect you to approve, but that’s what it is. At least now you know.

And some streamed teamQs in which ppl say “if we lose I quit” is nothing to do with private scrimming sessions.

people don’t realize just how strong the double warrior is.
Don’t forget that APeX beat 55HP 2-1 in a scrimm (on NA servers), including a game on legacy that was 70-500.

As you said, it was on NA. Not taking anything away from Apex’s performance ; we failed our opening on legacy and couldn’t come back after this. We said gg at 70-200 something and stopped playing at this point. You can ask them about that. On kyhlo, it was impossible to dodge treb because of latency. And as you pointed out, it was 2-1.
And to finish up, it was supposed to be PRIVATE practice scrims. If you made assumptions on who is better based on practice runs, in any game, you’re making a big mistake. You have no idea how the games went and what went wrong, so be a bro and use something else to make your point.

[VIDEO] Axe Shield WvW Roaming Build.

in Warrior

Posted by: KarsaiB.9475

KarsaiB.9475

Because first of all, the idea of the build is to utilize the new trait.

Next, because untraited greatsword deals terrible damage and I don’t want to utilize it for mobility only, esp considering how low my crit chance is. Also, just applying an intel sigil would make the build a super one trick pony that has no flexibility and is boring to play. I’m playing hambow enough in tournaments to not play with that kitten. And I’d lose battle or energy which would lower my overall damage outside of eviscerate, which, again, I don’t want to happen, or hinder my survivability by alot.

Next again, because all those 0 0 6 2 6 schemes are used over and over and over and over and over and over and I’m sick of it. Trying different alternatives. Also, there’s no reason to go past 20 in defense with this and then again, I tend to dodge rather well so I don’t feel like I need cleansing ire with this build. I find it even rather useless with full melee builds. Also, concerning discipline, going past 15 only gives me damage multipliers that I also get in strength. And the adrenaline cost reduction is useless as I only use one of the 2 burst skills.

As a side note, going that deep in strength allows for the great fortitude trait to actually make a big difference, as I reach 24k hp with just valkyrie boots, the rest being cavalier and zerker.

Finally, before you make a judgement on how useful traits are, please try them for yourself.

[VIDEO] Axe Shield WvW Roaming Build.

in Warrior

Posted by: KarsaiB.9475

KarsaiB.9475

Hey guys !

Just wanted to introduce you to this post-patch version of the good ol’ axe shield greatsword build. Here’s a video of the build in action in wvw, and I’ll go over the build itself really quickly down below.

The build is a 6 0 3 1 3.

It takes advantage of the new strength grand master trait. With the critical damage nerf, and me not willing to invest into a more glassy mix of gear, this trait comes in really handy. I have a heavy mix of cavalier with a few pieces of berzerker mixed in, as well as one knight and one valkyrie’s piece, thus having fairly low crit chance. It allows me to deliver high damage eviscerates while having 1850ish toughness and 24k hp. Overall, this spec is really poke-oriented and can sustain itself through most situation, and get away, in needed, while having a few deadly combos and single target counter pressure, as well as a rather high cleave damage. However, it lacks condi removal. It has indeed NONE ! Berzerker stance and lemongrass poultry soup are enough in most cases, as you have to play very agressively in general, in order to keep ennemies at bay.
Finally, as with any poke oriented spec, good positionning is key. Know when to go in and deliver your damage, and know exactly when to go out and kite (abusing line of sight if possible) and ennemies will have a very hard time getting rid of you.

A few explanations for the trait choices :

You wanna grab 3 in defense for adrenal health, which, coupled to your healing signet, is a very strong sustained passive heal, even after the nerf of healing signet. It synergizes also well with the weapon set as the only burst skill you will use is eviscerate, ideally to force people on the defensive, thus less preoccupied by damaging you.
It also allows you to take dogged march in adept which, coupled with lemongrass poultry soup and melandru runes, will grant you a snare, chill and immobilize duration reduction of 94%.

1 point into tactics will grant you leg specialist, which is what makes axe warrior work. Bladetrail and Throw Axe allow you to set up nasty combos. For example, a very simple one : Bladetrail into eviscerate. Simple, and kitten effective.
Use your cripples smartly and nothing will get away from you.

3 discipline is self-explanatory. I can’t imagine a single good build not taking fast hands. It’s just way too good. The adept trait trait there is up to you, I personnally like Warrior’s Sprint alot, and use it in every single one of my builds.

A quick word about endure pain. In my own opinion, bullrush is needed for axe shield greatsword to work. You can do a lot of different plays with bladetrail and bullrush timings, into rush/eviscerate, or just hundred blades, etc. Having shield makes up for not having Endure pain. The gear mix also explains why this build doesn’t deliver as much damage as you could potentially get with a very offensive mix. In my opinion, having strong defensive stats are the backbone of any good roaming build for warrior. It also allows you to take more fights, which would result in your death if you had a squishier set.

Here’s a link to the complete build, also featuring the gear I use :

http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fJAQNAR3ejMdU2ZZIWhwJigfgC3tbOAGgqXXak6IA-TFTBABWqCSQ7PQpqGRcBAQTJ4VKN8UlguUm1xRAAT1A04gAAwDAgMAMjB-w

Finally, you can adapt this build to sPvP. I personnally like to go 6 0 0 1 6 however, going full glass and dropping the 3 points from defense into discipline. Not having to worry about any potential zerg chasing you down, and not having buff food, I don’t see the point of going 15 defense only as you don’t get any of the huge benefits you gain from it in wvw. It’s a really good build for punishing mistakes by delivering tremendously high damage eviscerates and cleave.
However, this type of assassin warrior is way harder to pull off than a standard hammer longbow build, while also being outshined by better assassins, such as thief or mesmer, and thus won’t be as worth having altogether.

There you go guys, hope you enjoyed and will try this build yourself. If you have any question, feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer.
Peace !

Trying to bring some seriousness to this post (talking from a tpvp standpoint). Warrior is far, FAR from terrible in duels.
Especially considering the fact that he locks down any access to the point to his opponent. Now, most people are dumb enough to actually run around the node when duelling a warrior. Thing is, against a good player, warrior (talking hambow specifically) won’t win most of the time but won’t lose either (while keeping the node his), as he can just los as long as his oppnent doesn’t commit and actually contests the node, while having access to great range pressure himself if needed. But he won’t be at an advantage and might lose quickly if he gets +1ed. Against condi classes that keep their distance, he might lose at some point, los not rly helping once condis are applied, but altogether, it’s generally not worth to invest such time into it coz it’ll take like 2 minutes to bring him down, so you might as well be doing something else. So ye, vs good players that can afford to kite without caring about the node, warrior isn’t the best (while being far from bad as you can punish mistakes so incredibly hard) and will lose in the long run vs less tanky, mobile classes/specs.

When to leave close?

in PvP

Reading a lot of interrestingly misleading stuff here. :/

Stapple principle that you have to keep in mind at all times : Teamfights aren’t reliable. With so much damage floating around and such short cooldowns on everything, teamfights are a pure mess and winning or losing them isn’t worth a kitten .

Now, if you don’t have teamspeak, watch your allies’ hp bar/boons/condis. If you see that they’re dying, chances are you’d be more useful helping them than being afk on close. If you come too late however, don’t run in, you’ll be a freekill and 5 more points for the ennemy. Also the thief or w/e roamer will have prolly left already to decap your close > lose lose situation. In soloQ, most ppl have more success pushing far after capping close instead of being afk there, as it gives them more control of the situation, also utilizing actively your assets to win the game, instead of letting fate decide wether or not you win or lose.

Now, in a teamQ scenario, same rules apply. If your mates are struggling (struggling, not dieing) on mid, go help them out. If you have cc abilities and are rather fast to move around, you can also apply pressure on the ennemy close (same rule when you’re holding close while your team pushes far. Just push mid in this case).
Finally, it is sometimes best to stay close, especially like after an ennemy wipe, or if they only have 3 of their players vs your 4 teammates mid (communication !!). Until you have a full scout, stick around. But don’t afk on node regardless ! Do useful scouting. On forest, go towards beach for example and check for ennemies crossing there. The earliest you see ppl moving the better. Go generally in between points to have a better overview and keep track of the overall situation. If one guy is respawning and the 4 others are already on the map, follow him ! Wherever he goes. You have a full scout and your close is thus fully safe, even tho you’re not there yourself.
Finally, when the situation occurs that say your team is fighting 4v4 on far point and ennemy thief is going for a decap on your close, don’t chase. Trade points with him. Get mid for free. It’s better to cap it a few seconds after the thief caps your close than having it ticking for free for the ennemy while you fight on a neutral point vs a thief, away from your teammates. Repeat the process as long as necessary. Nodes > kills > deaths. It also works the same way the other way around. If you’re the thief, avoid a risky duel and go decap the other free node, as you’re fastest and will get a couple extra points. And repeat as long as possible.

As a reminder, while your mates are teamfighting, you’re the one that has to have the bigger picture in mind and react accordingly (through counting numbers, etc).

Hope that helps, feel free to message me ingame for more infos.

EDIT : I realise this isn’t the most helpful for soloQ, but as ppl said, soloQ is rly random and helpless at times, and that’s why I stopped playing it overall. As a general tip if you try to form up a team and play as best as possible : It is better to stale the teamfights to win lightly defended nodes. If you can win a fight, obviously, take it. But don’t make your strategy revolve around winning teamfights, it isn’t the right way to go in my opinion. Nodes > kills.

Thoughts on a WvW build?

Zerg fights =/= roaming.

You need to be able to kitten off when the situation turns dire. Greatsword is really good at that. Sword is also good but this weapon is less popular because it doesn’t offer the same damage and is more controlled oriented. A fun roaming build that I really like is sword shield hammer ; 0 25 20 10 15 (furious speed and unsuspecting foes in arms, cull the weak or dogged march or shield mastery and merciless hammer in defense, leg specialist obviously in tactics and signet mastery in discipline).
You don’t get cleansing ire, and use bullscharge instead of zerker stance. So obviously it’s not as good as other builds, but it’s way more fun and not bad regardless for the format. Same gear as the mix I posted above. It might get hit really hard after the Lyssa Runes nerf however. But your mobility could possibly still keep you alive. If you’re overwhelmed by condis, just use lemongrass poultry soup and be careful with positionning. The disabling combos you can do with those sets are incredible and can wreck condi classes that tend to run with few, high cooldown stun breakers. Overall, you can’t stay in the fray all the time, but have “windows of opportunity”. Rly fun, I recommend.

Sooo.

For roaming, your weapon choice is poor because too slow in my opinion. Your traits choice is in general really good when involving hammer and the use of both your burst skills, even tho it’s really generic for wvw roaming.

Now the problem I have is your armor choice. Full cavalier is a waste in my opinion. You lose quite a lot of power and you being that slow, you better hit like a truck. Extra toughness isn’t going to save you once your body gets swarmed. What I personnaly use is a very specific mix. I use Knight’s Helm, Zerker shoulders, gloves and pants, Cavalier breastplate and valkyrie’s boots (consider that I run mostly greatsword longbow tho, and have to trait for great fortitude as I go 20 deep in strength. With bloodlust and one piece of valk, I just reach 22k hp, you can swap this one to knights or cavalier or whichever you like best).
Going deep into cavalier is really good but you have to bank on trinkets for that. I use cavalier amulet, backpiece and both accessories, with zerker rings. And zerker weapons. You get insanely high and well distributed stats in my experience with this mix. Also, adding dolyak signet on top of that could be a good idea. You can reach 2k+ toughness this way, with crit dmg around 100ish and 40ish crit chance (I’d advise taking signet mastery and warrior’s sprint instead of vigor on stances and destruction of the empowered, the stats increase already give you plenty of damage). Hf.

No more jewels in amulets on the 15th?

Nobody wants to be locked within completely one sided options. The stat decrease is a really good idea. Would lower the overall damage floating around.

You mentionned players new to pvp. What most ask themselves when they come in is “where are rings, backpieces and accessories”, not “omg, having the possibility to chose another jewel is intimidating”. ESPECIALLY when amulets come with their respective jewels by default. Those arguments are a bunch of bullkitten. But hey, once you guys have an idea, be it terrible, chances are you’re gonna stick to it for the sake of it (cough immob stacking cough).

Not sure if that rant was aimed at me Lordsicky, I spend my time these days powning top 100 terror necros and hambows alike on my dps guard.

But I only have two condi cleanses and lyssa is one of them. I can spec for two more but this makes the matchup substantially weaker due to the drop in dps. It’s not a hard counter at all.

Soldier hambow warrior doesn’t die to dps guard 1v1. It just.. doesn’t.

I will confess, I didn’t read any of the things posted before me. Cba, really.

I would just like to say one thing. As soon as noticed, during ready up, that jewels weren’t there anymore, I immediately messaged grouch about this. Mixing up amulet and jewel is pivotal for many classes, starting by elementalist (kitten this bullkitten full zerker ele). It allows those “balanced classes/specs” (in terms on damage/survivability/support, not actual balance) to be the most effective, and honnestly, trying out new amulets/jewels combos is a great deal of fun in this game. It would be a pity to have it removed. Hope this change doesn’t go through.
