I think we all agree that reward system in GW2 is not exciting at all. We definitely need a revamp on the reward system. Ranting won’t help. Let’s come up with ideas for Anet to implement! Please consider the practicality of your ideas and how it will impact the game.
I think rewards come in several types.

Power
The type of rewards that directly impact the strength of your character. It makes your character stronger and hence most exciting. Most MMOs have this type of rewards (money grab). GW2, however, is against power creep. Higher tier or stronger gear is definitely an exciting reward at the personal level. Nevertheless, it put the player base on an endless treadmill, trying to keep up with other players, and invalidate players’ past efforts.
Suggestion
As mentioned above, I don’t think GW2 can make use of this type of reward without enraging the current player base.

Liquid Rewards
Golds and exp. I think GW2 should never focus on directly rewards huge amount of golds to players because of the nature of TP. By rewarding golds directly to players, players will do the contents that reward most golds and then to buy what they need off TP. It’s like working irl. Want a car? Work (or whatever methods you prefer to earn cash) to buy it. It’s boring. I have done enough of this irl. I want to actually collect parts and build a car in a game. From the dungeons’ nerf, gold sink in Fractal, and 2 golds/week of the coming Raid, I think Anet got this idea. Exp is in good place IMO, there are players who hit the Mastery cap when the expansion is not even launch for a month yet and there are players, like me, still at <10 mastery. The exp is high enough for hardcore players to hit mastery cap in a week and low enough for casual players like me to still leveling.
Suggestion
Not an economist, can’t suggest anything useful here. Generally, less gold sources, give more item rewards, and more account bound items. Exactly how many? That we need an economist to answer.

Pride
This is the type of rewards I think Anet implemented poorly. Pride can come in many forms, namely, title, achievement, leaderboard, and many more. This type of rewards can be easily implemented and give the player base something to work towards. Anet has implement few pride reward in game. Firstly, the world completion badge. This is very well implemented IMO. Secondly, titles. Titles are a good way to reward players who has achieved something. However, a player can only display a title at any given time. Regardless of how many titles a player has achieved, only the one he/she equipped matters. In addition, some titles do not look as epic as the effort spent to acquire it (it’s very subjective). Finally, leaderboard. Leaderboard is very poorly implemented IMO. The worst leaderboard I have ever seen in MMOs. We only have WvW, sPvP rank and achievement leaderboard. Even worse, there are no ways for players to view leaderboard in game. You could have a no.1 sPvP player in one of your sPvP match and not knowing it. By having the PvP league tier displayed beside the players’ name tag when PvP league starts is a really good move. Please make the PvP league tier badge epic, Anet.
Suggestion
- Titles should reflect the acquirement difficulty. I know the wording is very subjective. For example, “Been There, Done That” is not very attractive to me because of simple words. Something like “Central Tyria Explorer” sounds much better to me. To counter this problem, I would suggest to use different fonts or color or effects or whatever to reflect the “epic-ness” of the title. For instance, the color of the rarity can be used, i.e, white font -> blue font -> green font -> yellow font -> orange font -> pink font -> purple font. I am not a graphic designer so I can’t suggest a very attractive implementation. This can be easily implemented without even rewording any titles and enrage some players who like them.
- Give WvW players some attentions too. These people fight for our land while we farm flax peacefully! They are like soldiers and they deserve pride! WvW rank of a player should be displayed in some form. For example, a badge like sPvP league rank can be really awesome. Only 15 badges need to be designed and those can simply change colors for Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Mithril, and Diamond equivalents.
- Achievement should be more easily noticeable too. The way to find out the AP of a player now is too complicated. There should be a way to show off your AP. We can have badges… Okay, I am going to admit I have no creativity at all and pass this to someone else.
- Leaderboards. We need moooooooore leaderboards (cough guilds cough) and please make a BIG leaderboard in all major cities, borderlands, and HoTM where players can interact with to view top players in game. Top players (top 10? top 5? top 3?) in game deserve some recognition too. I am not going to mention badges here. Oh wait, I just did.

Loots
The most fundamental reward system in any game. However, GW2 did it very poorly IMO. I seldom look at what my loots are. They are rarely exciting, except that two times when I got my Tequatl Hoard and Pile of Regurgitated Armor?. I normally savage all green and blue then hit “deposit all materials”.
Suggestion
- Have more thematic drops from world bosses and jumping puzzles (for example, Endless Skritt Burglar Tonic from Drydock Scratch). RNG drops like Tequatl and Triple Trouble are fine. It gave us at least something to hope for every time we loot that chest.
- STOP giving us green and blue. No one wants to see them. I want to suggest to drop materials directly, but I know it might impact the savage gold sink system. So, I suggest to change the drops to thematic salvage items. Instead of the current complicated and confusing [salvage items](https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Salvage_item), reduce them to just a few items. This can ensure players recognize and remember every salvage items with different rarity. By remembering every salvage items, we get excited and disappointed when we see what we just looted. “Oh! I just got a Rare Rag! I have a chance to get Silk Scrap, awesome!” instead of “Oh! I just got a Carrion Privateer Pants of Grenth. Wait, what was it again? Whatever.”.

Cosmetic
The major reward system in GW2. When there are no gear grinding, skins becomes the “gear grinding” contents. I care very little about Fashion Wars 2 (not a fan of GW2’s artwork, I am more a Final Fantasy guy when it comes to artwork). I have sticked with Aurora Armor since the day I can afford it until today (swap shoulder piece out with Tempest Loop recently though). Cosmetic items take a lot of production cost since Anet needs to design them for every races and genders. Not to forget, they have to solve the clipping issues too. There are a lot of works to do in providing cosmetic rewards. Anet sells cosmetic items and depends on that income as well. By putting too many cosmetic items for players to earn in game could potentially hurt Anet’s income. By the way, Anet did a great job with Legendary Weapons.

The title has no typo.
I often encounter this issue when playing on my Mac. My character starts moving on his own, just like auto run, but can’t be stopped. The character will be moving in one direction only as if I kept holding the key to that direction. The problem will go away after a while. This problem normally happens when I pressed direction keys (WASD) with skills together, but I can’t replicate the problem.
This issue is very annoying.

Yes, please. Titles are supposed to be hard and rare, not everywhere like this. I would really like to see only extremely challenging contents offer titles. And please allows the player himself/herself to see his/her own name and title.
Or even better, given by how many players will be irritated by removing their titles, reward something else that is extremely fancy. Something like a floating object on the player who achieve something really awesome. For example, a floating golden crown on no.1 sPvP player’s head, a floating silver crown on no.2, a floating bronze crown on no.3, a normal floating iron helmet on no.4-no.10, something dumber on no.11-no.20. Then, something different for other leaderboards. Finally, some extremely challenging contents that awards something else, maybe like an aura or whatever.
But first, we need extremely challenging contents. EXTREMELY. So, those who complete it really deserved the cosmetic effects.

Guild is only a social platform. You don’t have to login to protect your guild or fight for your guild or whatever. I love WvW. I expect highly engaging large scale warfare and need to commit time to it. However, it is not the case. You zerg everything, running around the WvW map. Fight if the objective is empty, run if it is not. You can play and drop the game anything you like. You can come back after a year, your gear is still the best gear. Nothing matters.
Well of course your gear will still be the best gear, because one of the founding ideologies of this game was: no gear treadmill. You were supposed to be able to have access to any gear the way you wanted it; dungeons, crafting, pvp etc. You should have seen the uproar that happened when ascended gear was introduced. This game is based on the idea that you should be able to achieve maximum rewards the way you want to. People complain about gear treadmills in other games, but then don’t realize that if you take out the gear treadmill, you get what GW2 has instead. Each path has it’s own pros and cons.
Guild vs. Guild is coming in the next expansion, so you might like that. But yeah, this game isn’t for everyone, no game is or can be.
I agree to have no gear treadmill, but I think gears should have more varieties. At least make every gear’s prefix viable and important in the game. Then, I can collect them (I am collecting dungeon sets now simply for cosmetic purpose, Fashion Wars 2?) and play with a different play style with each prefix. Without this, any contents are simply not rewarding. I run dungeons, world bosses, guild missions, and etc., but I don’t even care about the loots I get. I am not excited when I loot boss chests, which are supposed to be “whoa, boss chests, I wonder what I will get.”. I loot, I open TP to see the price of them, I savage things that are not expensive, I sell things that are expensive, deposit all materials, consume all lucky items. Done. I don’t care what I looted, what I got from savaged, how much I got from selling items. Nothing matters.
GvG. I was pretty exciting when I heard about it. Now it is announced, I am not impressed. Fights in arena???? Sounds like kids fight. It will be much better if guilds can invade opponent guild’s hall.

I am actually VERY happy about this. Finally, some meaningful reason to get ascended gear. I am still new, so I have no idea how to get ascended gears yet. But according to a few replies, ascended gears are very hard to get. Then, of course ascended gears should be wayyyyy better than exotic gears. IMO, 10% difference is not big and it should be bigger.
However, I have shared a few opinions in this forum and already know what type of community is this. People are angry about this because they do not have the time to collect the ascended gears or they don’t want to grind for it. Players who have the time to get the ascended gears will be slightly better than them, which those ascended geared players deserve the power difference since they spent more time and afford to get the geared up.
Come on people, your precious exotic gears are not nerfed, you did not lose anything. Mobs are not buff either. You are still exactly the same. You are not happy because people who spent time collecting ascended gears outperform you?
Way to go, Anet. Although I don’t think I have the time to collect ascended gears, I appreciate the ideas that more dedicated players are being rewarded. I really hope to see legendary gears to have that power difference too, instead of acting only as cosmetic gears (I don’t think this will ever happen given this community).

Well, I wouldn’t say you are wrong. I would say… you love GW2, a lot. I work 40 hours a week at $16.50/hr and I think HoT is crazily expensive. $50 itself is not much, but it is relatively expensive to other games. I can buy a complete AAA game with $50 or a little bit more. HoT is only an expansion, not even a complete game by itself.
About 6 weeks ago, I was looking for an MMORPG to play during my summer break. I have looked into many MMORPGs and GW2 excites me the most. Despite all the great features in GW2, my friends and I didn’t like a few things in GW2, such as the casualness, lack of guilds competitive contents, and it’s horizontal progression. However, I saw the expansion and think it will actually solve most of the things we don’t like.
So, I convinced my friends to purchase the game to get started and prepared for the expansion (since most the features in HoT are for end game). Surprisingly, I convinced 4 friends to purchased GW2 (didn’t expect that many). Now, with this expansion price tag and the fact that it includes the core game, the money we spent on the core game is wasted (if we buy the HoT) and I am the one who wasted their money.
I am the one who did the research and convinced them to buy, so, all blames are actually on me. They don’t know about the expansion pre-purchase riot yet. How am I going to face my friends?

- A load of replayable content that can be repeated on multiple characters for repeat rewards (including champ bags, materials and BL key).
-The ability to craft Mawdrey (an ascended backpiece with some unique skins)

-AchievementsAs for your other thoughts on what to buy:
-Bag slot. Most people really don’t need the extra inventory space that much. Before considering these, buy and equip 4 20-slot bags. Copper-fed salvageomatic and infinite gathering tools are also handy because they reduce the amount of salvage-kits and gathering tools you need to bring with you. If you’re still struggling for space, then you probably need to merch more often. Most people I see with extra bag slots have it on their main character for dungeon tours/fractals to hold multiple sets of gear and a load of food/potions.
-Bank slot expansion. I would try to advise against buying these as well, even though I have bought 4 of them myself. It’s very easy to clutter your bank up with trash, believing it to be useful. If you have 2 bank slots, you just clutter them both up and need a third! Put as much non-accountbound stuff as you can into a guild bank and then make an alt (with 20 slot bags) to hold the rest.
I did a bit of maths ages ago on the cost of bank expansions vs guild bank. A 50 slot guild stash, slot for slot, was much cheaper even if you directly bought the influence from the guild promoter (than buying gems with gold and buying a 30 slot-bank expansion tab).
Here’s the breakdown:
-A stash (50 bank slots) requires architecture research level II and a stash to be built, requiring a total 2,500 influence points or 50g if bought only with gold, or 28 guild commendations and 1g 41s 12c.
This equates to 1g per bank slot or 0.56 guild commendations and 2s 82c each.-A treasure trove (an extra 100 bank slots) requires architecture research level IV- totalling an additional 20,000 influence points after buying a stash. This equates to an additional 400g if bought only with gold, or 200 guild commendations and 10g 8s.
This equates to 4g per bank slot, or 2 guild commendations and 21s 60c each.-A deep cave (an extra 100 bank slots) requires architecture level V- totalling an additional 30,000 influence points after buying a stash. This equates to an additional 600g if bought only with gold, or 300 guild commendations and 15g 12s.
This equates to 6g per bank slot, or 3 guild commendations and 30s 24c each.-(right now) A 600 gem bank-slot expansion equates to 108g 27s 61c. That’s 3g 60s 92c each slot.
-Character slots are always good… I have a huge amount of them myself. But considering you have only created 1 char so far, I’d progress at least 3 more characters before getting more slots.
-Other recommendations would be a copper-fed salvage-o-matic and gathering tools (watchwork mining pick in particular as it can earn you some money back over time).
If you’re interested in aesthetics at low levels, buy an outfit.

Good to hear that. I am new to the game and the genre (after all, western MMORPG is very different to asian MMORPG, so I better consider it as a different genre). Elementalist damage is not too high imo, only frost bow skill 4 did okay damage, but now they say it is too OP and want to nerf it. Probably the player power to mob power ratio in GW2 is much lower.
I got to play other professions to know whether elementalist damage is high or not, lol.
Living World Season 2 is definitely worth it in my opinion. Especially if you have someone to team up with to play it.
After that I’d suggest permanent gathering tools, copper fed salvage and a bag slot. If you really need more account wide storage right now then make your empty character slots into mules and use them to hold stuff.

Yeah, that’s what I am planning to do too. Make extra characters to hold stuffs for me. So, bank slots is not important for me now.
Other than the LS season pack, all other gem store itens are conveniences or cosmetics.
So…, if you don’t wanna any of those 2, your best bet is just get the ls s2. I personally find the copper-fed salvage A LOT useful, since I farm a lot and it saves me way soo many time/bag slots.
The unlimited gathering tools are also a very good option, since it will save a lot of frustation from seeing dar orichalcum node and not have a right gathering tool, or when you trash a high cost gathering tool to get some trash material.
None of those are going to make you earn money faster (Most likely you’ll ned years to get back the money you invested), but are things that surely makes life a lot easier.
I did consider copper-fed salvage tool, but then I realize I can always enter heart of the mists to buy/sell at the merchant. So, not too useful to me now. Or are there maps that I can’t enter HoM like usual?
Unlimited gathering tools sound very useful and will make my life MUCH easier, until I found out it is 1000 gems PER gathering tool. 1280 gems can buy me a mini game expansion (LW S2), 1000 per gathering tool is way too expansive for me now. I might consider it later when I get all my necessary things, like LW S2, bank slots, and bag slots.

I am going to buy some gems using golds. What is/are the most reasonable gem store item(s) to get first? The following is the list of items I am considering (order matters):
- Living World Season 2
- Bag slot (just realized yesterday it is not account bound, why Anet, why???)
- Bank slot expansion (I have already made a personal guild to store non-soul-bound and non-account-bound items)
- Character slot (I have only completed my first character, so not going to get it until my fifth character is done, unless there are some good suggestions)
- Spend the gold on something else, not in gem store.
Note: I am not looking at cosmetic items yet, not until I have extra golds to spare. I don’t mind inconvenience. As long as it is not too troublesome, I will not spend my precious golds to get a make my life slightly easier (I will consider if it will make my life MUCH easier/it will help me farm gold faster).

I only have an elementalist.
Swapping attunements is fun and engaging. You will have 20 weapon skills at your disposal. Can make a lot of combos on your own (forever alone player). However, elementalist is very very squishy. It requires a lot of active defense.

Yes, open world PvP in the western gaming lingo usually means free-for-all player killing throughout the world. In most games towns are a safe zone while in sandbox ones you can be attacked almost anywhere. More hardcore ones (these are very often of Asian origin) make your character drop some of their items upon death.
Dueling is a feature that lets a player challenge another (even allies and party members) then duke it out between each other. No one else can attack them.
What you mention is an optional PvP toogle used on PvE servers, giving the option for the player to “flag” themselves for PvP and in turn be able to attack others who are also flagged. Now that’s something I can agree with! Enjoyed the peace of PvE servers but sometimes friends and I liked flagging ourselves and participating in world PvP as part of an RP event.
Drop items? DROP items? My items??? That is brutal. Who in the right mind would like that? Okay, now it makes sense. Now I understand why I got all those hostile replies T.T So, all this while, I have been portraying myself to be that guy without the right mind :C
You mentioned that the guilds which control those towns can ban players from them at whim. That’s a problem if the player in question wants to enter those towns for whatever reason.
Oh yeah, but we have the alliance of justice Those who got rejected form other towns are welcome to the town we own, which is basically almost everywhere, lol. They got banned for some reason too. If they are banned without a reason or the reason is simply cyber bullying, they can talk to the alliance and the alliance will sort things out for them (we once took down a guild because they crossed the line).
That depends. Did all players who attacked a monster got credit for it? Were the resource nodes used for those skills (lumbering, for example) shared? If no, that means that players still viewed each other as a threat. Even if the other guy can’t kill you, he can still tag and take all the monsters you need or beat you to the resource nodes thus preventing you from advancing in the game.
Not saying competitiveness is inherently wrong. It isn’t. But it’s not for everyone and in my opinion far too many games are built on the idea that players will be absolutely thrilled to go against each other.
Oh no, I think GW2 is the only MMORPG with that system. You can kill steal mobs. They handle resource nodes a little bit differently. They have a farm for resources nodes (not mobs), except for some incredibly rare resources. All resources are unlimited, the only limitations you have are your gathering tool (for example, can only last for 500 times) and your backpack.
Yea, players can kill steal to prevent from advancing, but I view that as a normal behavior in MMORPG, until I met GW2 :P
I have read and even commented (I think?) on your previous thread where you actually DID say that you’d like to see some of those features in GW2. Reading the opening post gave me the impression that you were still aiming for that.

The game is also exceptional hard (that’s why it died :C, new players have no patient to play it). So, it is not possible for mean players to cause trouble. There are just not enough mean players to overwhelm the alliance.
Ah, I see. It’s a shame that it died because I would have loved to see that community in action. Just a sneak peek.
There’s a big issue here though. As you mentioned, the game withered away as it couldn’t attract or hold on to new players due to its difficulty. A lot of that difficulty no doubt came from the forced open world PvP, player controlled towns and overall feeling of dread whenever you saw another player and had to guess whether they’re there to help or hinder you.
A small, loyal, dare I say hardcore playerbase isn’t a bad thing in itself but only if the game was created with that in mind to begin with. So budget, update frequency and the in-game system itself has to lend itself to only being made for and supported by a couple thousand or even just a couple hundred people.
While some of your thoughts and ideas sound good on paper, if Guild Wars 2 went the way of games you used to play then it would either die rather quickly or get transformed into a product that bears no resemblance to the current version.
Erm, I didn’t mention forced open world PvP. I first saw force open world PvP in Tera PvP server. I have not seen anything like that before in my culture. Now I understand why players in the forum are so paranoid when I mention “open world PvP”. By open world PvP, I simply means PvP in open world. The only harm it can cause is killing mobs that are meant for leveling players. I am totally against forced open world PvP. In all the MMORPGs I played, we have the option to turn on dueling mode (I think this is what it’s called here). Players in dueling mode can attack players in dueling mode. Players who are not in dueling mode can neither attack nor attacked by any players.
I don’t see how players controlled town make the game difficult.
Since there isn’t forced open world PvP, there isn’t the felling of dread too.
The three things you mentioned caused nothing to the game difficulty. The game difficulty is caused by the game itself. Players do not have a “character level”, instead, we have multiple levels. Sword skill, shooting skill, planting, lumbering, talking (yes, it changes how NPC treats you. with high talking level, you can buy stuffs from vendors with lower price), and so much more. If I can remember correctly, we have like 12 (?) expertise to level.
So, sword skill level affects what sword you can equip, and the damage you can do using sword and etc.. It is very very difficult to level one expertise. For example, if you want to level lumbering to max, you need to stand there, chop trees 24/7 for, I don’t remember, 5 months? It sounds very long, especially compared to GW2, but level in that game makes huge difference (it causes the problem of low level maps become useless, it is a double edge swords).
And no, I did not ask GW2 to change to the game I used to play. I am here just to point out things I like and dislike.

Looking back at what special events GW2 has hosted over the 3 years, it’s actually pretty sad (LW is very impressive though). It is way lesser than what many F2P MMORPGs can offer. I know it is because F2P MMORPGs are more motivated to squish money out of the players.

if your lvl 3 and the mops are lvl 3 they can kill you easy if you have more off them
ad lvl 4 you get ad last your stats boost + 30 and things look better for youthe dodge system sucks you only can do it 2 times then your stuck and have a very hard time killing many many mops in some areas and you must mostly run for your life
some classes are to slow in running when others get easy 25% speed boost
it can be a pain in the butt in WvW or EOTM the train wont stop

Not a big fan of the music personally. So, no comments on the musics. I have neutral feeling in it. However, I do see regional differences in the taste of musics. My asian friends either don’t like it or don’t mind it; western friends love it.
I love/hate the megaserver. It is very impressive, technologically, and I love big scale fights. I hate it because, like you said, world bosses become too easy (except for some).
I don’t like the dodge system too, but I won’t say it sucks, especially in this forum (see how many hostile replies I got when I only said I prefer other combat systems). I would say it depends on your play style, some might like it, but some do not. What I hope to change is not the dodge system (it can’t, technically), but the defensive people. I hope they can understand there are people who prefer different things in this world. They can express their opinions, like it or not, but not shout at people who think otherwise.
Ele has a lot of speed boost skills, so I won’t complain much on this, lol.
- Combat system
I love action combat system (so, again, stop suggesting WoW). The best action combat system I have played is Monster Hunter, and the second best doesn’t even come close. MH has no “dodge skill” that will make you invulnerable during the animation. “Dodge” is simply a method of moving. You move out from the attack, you dodge it. You move into the attack, you get hit. That’s the “dodge” part.
Then, the mobs part. In GW2, it is impossible to dodge every melee attacks because the mobs just come to you and attack without any pre animation. Almost every mobs have no pre animation. Only a few mobs and bosses have pre animation for their attack. In addition, we can only dodge twice at a time. So, I don’t even bother to dodge now, unless it is a big attack. In a result, GW2 is not so “action” compared to games like MH, Tera and Dragon Nest.You and I must be playing different games. Dodging is an essential element to combat, especially if you are outnumbered, outleveled or fighting a tough opponent (like when you solo a champion). Mastering it is important if you want to survive fights, as you can’t just stand in one spot and tank damage constantly. It is only one element to the fight, though (other elements include deflecting damage, interrupting attacks, confusing your opponent, etc).
Timing and mastery of your skills is everything in this game and is the difference between people who get murdered in a couple of hits from a champion and people who can solo them. When I see combatants who aren’t dodging or constantly moving, I can usually predict that they will not succeed unless they have a lot of help.
We are playing the same game. I didn’t say dodge is not an essential element in combat. I said dodge in GW2 is not as important as other action combat games I played. You mentioned dodge is only one of the elements, there are other things in GW2. That’s exactly what I meant. This makes GW2 not so action oriented.
There are still so many things that are not announced yet, 6 more elite specializations, guild halls, and competitive group contents. If they announce one each week (which they have not do so recently), there are still a very long way to go.

I played games with your favored system. It was a disgusting experience that almost made me give up on the genre. I met the occasional kind power player but most of them were raging donkeys intent on ruining the game for everyone else around them.
As for who is nice and who isn’t… you’d be suprised if you knew that most of the trash-talking and lowbie ganking players ARE adults. The rich kid stereotype was never true. There are rich kids riding their parents’ credit card, don’t misunderstand me, but they’re the exception and not the rule.
By the way, I’d be really interested in knowing when and where you experienced that utopia of yours. A game that is ruled by good people who enforce fair rules and the majority agrees to those rules? Amazing! If we could round up those players in real life then we might just achieve world peace!
I am sorry to hear that you had such bad experiences with those games. Yeah, I might have the stereotype, but whatever, they are the ones who told me their identity. It might be a lie after all.
It was a very old asian MMORPG, my favorite MMORPG of all time. It was like ~8 years ago. This game ruined my high school btw, lol. Well, the game is ruled by just a few good OP players, some of them are probably not even good people. They just have to do it so that they can join the alliance (just like GW2 players who revived you might be good people, they can get exp and your death is a DPS lost to them). The game is also exceptional hard (that’s why it died :C, new players have no patient to play it). So, it is not possible for mean players to cause trouble. There are just not enough mean players to overwhelm the alliance.
Real world? They have to have overwhelming strong military force to do that. This is actually kind-of what is happening in the world now. A few strong countries that have overwhelm military force that other small countries have to follow. Only a few stubborn countries try to fight back. Now think about it, it is actually very similar to the game I played. There are wars going on, but majority of the world are definitely peaceful.

The one thing I just take issue with is with your mention of the dungeon.
This is not anets fault, and really cannot do anything to stop it. This is the players themselves. The description said lv 80 experienced. Even if there were no levels, it would’ve said, “exp only”. And chances are when they saw you dying to bosses or asking what a boss does, auto kick anyway.
So again, don’t put this dislike at a net, put it against picky players.
Nope, I don’t blame Anet. I don’t blame those players either. I understand that they have done it so many times and they are now so bored. They will definitely expect people to know it so that they can finish it quickly.
I don’t join those team that says “exp 80’s”. I normally start my own team that says “Path x (I want to read the story, no speed run)”. I will need to wait for very long, but the teammates I gather are either exp players that are willing/prefer to run it slowly or newbies that have not done it before. Running with all newbies is fun because we have to figure everything ourselves, but time consuming. Running with exp players is fun too because I can read my story, and learn something (like where to stack, etc.).
130 hours was also what i needed for my first character that was leveled only with
exploring.
Gets faster with each char if you have money to craft some professions, and also
do less and less exploration on each new character.
And more tomes too. One day I am going to have 80 tomes, then I will spend it on one new character. lol
As a weak player, I can join alliances with friends and guilds to beat the shxx out of that OP player. It is just like raid dungeon, only the boss is a player this time. I think it is fun.
Well, let me tell you how that works.
The alliance of valiant heroes attempt to take down the mean lone wolf. They perhaps succeed. It turns out that wolves come in packs so the overpowered player contacts their overpowered friends and together they camp the valiant heroes for the next few weeks.
Most of the time the alliance doesn’t even have a chance to form and rise up against the big bad because the overpowered players spend most of their time massacring lowbies who then either quit out of sheer frustration or join the gankers. What else would those pixel gods do? They’ve beaten probably everything the game has to offer, that’s why they’re so overpowered to begin with.
I see you made an assumption that there are no friendly OP players. What you described only happened to me in a p2w MMORPG (where OP players are mostly rich kids). It rarely happens to me.
In my case, this is what normally happens. There are three types of OP players, the mean ones (normally rich kids), the friendly ones (normally adults with time and money), and the I-don’t-give-a-shxx ones. The mean OP players will take over all the resources and bully other players. Over time, weak players alliances will be formed and war rages. The I-don’t-give-a-shxx ones normally won’t get involve in this because the mean OP players do not have the guts to disturb them. Those I-don’t-give-a-shxx OP players, like the name suggest, they login, they pay, they play, they kill people who stand in their way, and they logout. No drama, nothing. Coolest players ever. The friendly OP players will normally join the alliance and fight with us because they love the game and they don’t want the game to die. When war turns sour, until a point that the gameplay is being affected (large scale open world PvP, so mobs in that map will be wiped too), I-don’t-give-a-shxx OP players will join the winning side and end this shxx.
I even played an MMORPG before where the friendly OP players dominate the server. They make regulations, they form alliances, and they destroy mean players. In that game, cities can be taken over by guilds and the guild that owns the city can control the tax in the city and ban players from the city (city’s guards will attack them if they enter). If mean players dominate the server, the game can be literally unplayable (they take over all the cities and ban people they don’t like from it). However, that doesn’t happen. The alliance determines which guild takes over which city (the whole alliance will join the war taking over the city) and what tax they can impose. Guilds outside the alliance are welcome to take over the city too if they are good enough (no help will be offered though). Those guilds can do whatever they want with their city, high taxes or ban players. However, when they cross the line and affect major gameplay, the alliance will crush them.

I disagree with your view of sPvP, it is not just skill, you need the right traits, sigils and runes and neck item. in sPvP. there is just a lot more to it than skill alone, even if skill is a big factor.

Yes it is annoying when dungeon groups do that hence why I only dungeon with my guild unless I am desp for tokens (extremely rare). Speed running dungeons in any MMO I find annoying, but GW particularly lacks basic mechanics to prevent it and as such, the culture you decribe applies.
As for MH. I tried. 2, 3 and 4. I really tried. Each time myself and my friend convinced ourselves there must be something about it to make it so popular. But the controls, just so hideous. Just utterly unsuited in every possible way to the game it was tied to. Each to their own though, I long since realised it just isn’t aimed at me and decided to leave it to those who appreciate it, Here in GW2, the ease of play is a breath of fresh air after a long day at work.
I have GW1 and TSW and some other games if I want a more challenging system to play. I think it’s refreshing GW2 has taken the approach that it has. And I don’t think they are yet anywhere near done unlocking its potential either.

I like how some other games handle action combat a bit better. There are a few things about MH that I just can’t stand. I hate consumables. I don’t find them worthwhile to gameplay. I don’t like wasting resources on them and I don’t like wasting time to gather for them or make them. MH is pretty consumable heavy. I also think MH movement is a bit too deliberate and slow. As ridiculous as some of the weapons are, it tries too hard to be realistic. It’s why I like TERA and Dragon Nest combat better. It’s faster and gives more freedom of movement.
That said, I appreciate what MH stands for and how it has inspired other games, but I like the games that are iterations on MH, not MH itself.
Consumable? I don’t remember using any consumables in MH. I love grinding materials to make new gears in MH. I like Tera and Dragon Nest combat too.
How can you play MH and not use consumables? You never use potions? Anti-toxins? Sharpening stones?

Don’t you need to collect stuff for recipes for the food at the city? Still, MH is VERY clunky how it handles consumables and having to cycle through your inventory mid combat to find what you need is silly. I guess I just got burnt out on consumables as an idea and a mechanic from early World of Warcraft days. You have to have flasks (expensive as sin), potions (for use in every important fight, in Vanilla there wasn’t a limit to one per fight so you just had to wait 2 mins before tossing down another), food buffs, reputation/world buffs (felwood plants) and anything else they could come up with like items to use for combat buffs. I would rather focus on my character than what my character is eating or drinking mid combat.

I can’t do that in GW2 for most of the mobs. As an ele, I can only take 2-3 hits from higher level mobs, and I only have 2-3 times dodges throughout the fight. So, I have to kill the mobs before it launches attack for 4-6 times, which I can’t. I can only do it with the mobs that move very slowly (given that there are no other mobs nearby when I am kitting it, which rarely happens) or have pre animation attack (that big risen that will rush towards you, can’t remember the name).
ele’s are actually one of the better solo classes, if you’re experienced at the game. (FYI, lupicus is one of the hardest dungeon bosses in the game. even teams of 5 wipe on him quite often.)
You can solo nearly any of the content in the game if you’re skilled enough, honestly.
(of course this is a level 80 solo-ing a level 80 boss (designed for 5 people though). but it applies to all aspects of the game. as long as you’re skilled enough, you can fight enemies much stronger than you, e.g. this content designed for level 80’s being done by a level 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb_ezeb778g )
The first video you shared actually satisfies both my conditions for soloing. I love this type of fight (I have only met a few bosses that do this).

I love Monster Hunter. But Monster Hunter is not the pinnacle of action combat. It’s a HUNTING game, and it’s very much geared more toward that than combat. While I would love a seriously well-made Monster Hunter MMORPG, that combat style does NOT fit with an MMO like GW2 (or any others currently on the market, really).
You seems to have some interesting opinions, but then, everyone is a bit different. Also, if you don’t remember using any consumables in MH, then I don’t understand what you did in MH or how far you actually got.
Back to GW2 though, what do you WANT levels to be? I much prefer GW2’s system myself. Combined with the dodge system, I can go and take on stronger mobs/higher level maps if I want. Or I can go back to lower level maps and still be super strong to the point I likely won’t die but not SO strong that it is boring. This is the only difference I see between GW2 levels and other games (in general, there are obviously differences in each game in terms of stat gain and such).

You got already over 100 posts that most of these things you ‘dislike’ in gw2 are a core element and loved by most other gw2 players and that some of your ‘likes’ are different after you played a while or hasn’t been experienced the same as you have.

Most of them are things I dislike and I am wondering why is the culture here so different to what I used to see. So, I started that two posts to see why others like things I dislike. I must be honest and say that I didn’t read the whole post… I read first section and some of the other sections. Umm Anyway I want to say that it was a well written post. You must have put down alot of time not only to write it but to figure out all the goods and bads.
I mean I also realy love this game and I very often defend it when people are bashing it with stuff I don’t agree with. I do agree with you on most points I read but I will comment on a few.

Yes, I did put down a lot of time, especially when English is not my native language. But no, I did not figure out all the good and bad. They are not good and bad, they are only what I like and what I dislike. Something I dislike might be good for the majority.
WvW – Only a few weeks ago I realized that WvW requires no skill and no brains, just to be the biggest server with the biggest blobb. I am pretty bored with WvW and I would want something to “force” players to roam in smaller groups more. Big Zergs are cool and all but I would like a way that makes battles more about player skills and not just numbers… I realy hope the new WvW map will make me enjoy it more.
Not doing WvW a lot yet, but I agree on what you say. WvW definitely needs some new mechanism to enforce new gameplay style. It looks like they are now doing it in HoT. I really look forward to it.
World Bosses Dislike – I so agree with this one and I just point it out as this is actually something I would love for Anet to do something about. I don’t get it for example why the little Pirate girl got to be a world boss but not the Fire Shaman? But that is just a small point. Every World Boss has to have their safe spots removed, and they should have alternative faces like Claw of Jormag and Fire Shaman. It wouldn’t have been bad if like Shadow Behemoth had some (Like two) Undestructable portals that spawned monsters wich a few groups of players had to take care of so that the group fighting Shadow Behemoth don’t get overwhelmed by them. Just an example.
True. I really like World bosses like Claw of Jormag, Tequatl the Sunless, and Shadow Behemoth (it’s weird that Shadow Behemoth looks so cool, but it is one of the weakest world boss). I would like to see more world bosses that have the outlook that correspond with their power.
Power step/Level scale Dislike – I disagree here as I feel way to strong when I am playing on low level maps. I am usually helping my new friends and new members in my guild when they explore the world and levels up but I am feeling to strong, sometimes I kill enemies with one hit. So I usually have to equip a non Power gear or a low level gear so I don’t take all the fun out from my fellow adventurers. The progress I feel isn’t comming from leveling it is comming from myself learning how to play my character and I feel how I myself is getting better at playing my character.
One hit???? I haven’t kill any enemy with one hit yet.
I agree with all your points, and that’s why they are under my love/hate section.
Age of the game – I don’t realy get what you mean here? As I look for players now and then I always find new players with 1-100 AP. Of course not everyone is on just the exact spot as I am but there are alot of new players running around the map. I actually see new players everywhere when I run around exploring with my friends but there are ofcourse some maps that are less played I notice. I guess it all depends on how many players is many in our own eyes, but I think that if you try to look for someone to play with you will find them. Can’t expect a random player to just follow you around :P
I mean the number of old players and new players is not balance. There are so many old players relative to new players. I am not blaming anything here, just the age of the game. This is a common phenomenon in games that are few years old.

As for MH. I tried. 2, 3 and 4. I really tried. Each time myself and my friend convinced ourselves there must be something about it to make it so popular. But the controls, just so hideous. Just utterly unsuited in every possible way to the game it was tied to. Each to their own though, I long since realised it just isn’t aimed at me and decided to leave it to those who appreciate it, Here in GW2, the ease of play is a breath of fresh air after a long day at work.
I have GW1 and TSW and some other games if I want a more challenging system to play. I think it’s refreshing GW2 has taken the approach that it has. And I don’t think they are yet anywhere near done unlocking its potential either.

No game is loved by everyone. Every game has players who hate it. Most players fall somewhere in the middle of love it and hate it.

There are no exceptions. Not even MH is an exception. There is someone out that that hates MH. You may not know that person or those people, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Well leveling is a double edge sword. Or more specifically the auto-downleveling. The idea is that you can still participate in all game content and play with friends who may have much lower level characters. I think that those are worthwhile things.
That said it also means you don’t ever have to leave the starter zone if you don’t want to. In other MMOs you are pushed along because everything stops giving you XP and rewards. But here why leave if, assuming you are upgrading your gear as you level, you become a tiny one to two shot Godling. Use to take you four or five hits to take down one critter? Now watch as you plow through a whole group without breaking a sweat. Feels great, why go someplace where it’s four or five hits again?
Agree. That’s why it’s under my love/hate section.

Depending on how players get those unbalanced gears and ranks. If they can buy it. Uh uh, I hate p2w game. If they have to grind it very very hard. I would like it, they deserved the prestige power.Yeah, I didn’t mean that in a “Leave GW2” way I meant it in a genuine, “This other thing might interest you as well” kind of way. I do believe it’s possible to play more than one game. (Especially in the case of Gw2 since it’s a much smaller minimum time investment to be competitive)
Lol, I am just kidding, but no, I don’t play more than one game. I will spend 100% of my game time to one game. Probably after I got bored of GW2, which I suspect it won’t happen for the next few years.
I am collecting dungeon armors recently and that is what I observed. I can hardly find a team that can bear with me reading the story. I happened to ran AC with a clueless team yesterday. I had soooo much fun with them figuring out things and solving puzzles. When I run AC with the speed run team, what I get is, “stand here”, “stack here”, “wait here”, “go there”, “come here”, “nuke it”, and etc.. Sometimes they don’t even talk. I agree it is very effective, but it is sooo boring.
Dungeons are so much more fun with people that are willing to banter a bit and aren’t in such a big kitten hurry. Granted, I can totally sympathize with wanting a quick reward for those that have been playing since launch and have done the dungeon to death, but I’ve only been playing for less than a year so they haven’t lost their luster for me yet. So I could definitely use more players with that attitude around for dungeon-running groups. Feel free to look-me up in game if you’re looking for people to run dungeons with.
I understand those who had run it for so many times that they want to clear it as soon as possible. I don’t blame them. I am blaming the community not being diverse enough to have equal number of new players to run slowly with me.
That said. I just finish running CM path 1 in an hour with a completely clueless team. No one in the team has done it before. We searched, we explored, we died, we fought, and we won. We did spend a lot of time, very laughable time for dungeon quick run players. But hey, instead of clearing it quickly without knowing what happened, I had fun. We had fun.That was my best dungeon run ever.
Yes it is annoying when dungeon groups do that hence why I only dungeon with my guild unless I am desp for tokens (extremely rare). Speed running dungeons in any MMO I find annoying, but GW particularly lacks basic mechanics to prevent it and as such, the culture you decribe applies.

I agree with a good chunk of this albeit for different reasons. And I note you said"First" level 80 so it seems you like this game enough to consider a second.
What? Second? I am going to play all 9 professions. I am farming gold now to buy LW season 2. The next thing will be character slots.
Just judging by some of your like/dislike points, it sounds to me like you’d really enjoy Aion, if you’ve never played it. And you’d specifically like it for some of the reasons why I LEFT it for Gw2.

Yes, the end game content you described in Aion is a 10/10 content for me.
Controlling forts actually gave you control of endgame area maps, access to dungeons and resources and things like that.

There’s a ranking system where the top players get military commander ranks which literally give you special access to gear and powers that make you more powerful than other individual players.

So you’d have those infamous “unbeatable players” that you actually would need crazy amounts of power or even a full party to take down; and taking down an enemy commander actually means something.

Personally, I couldn’t stand how it was both PvP centric, and incredibly unbalanced across gear, classes and ranks.

When I mean I like to have OP players in the game, I don’t mean I want to be the OP player (I don’t mind though). I like them to be there so that there are heroes for me to join or there are villains for me beat. As a weak player, I can join alliances with friends and guilds to beat the shxx out of that OP player. It is just like raid dungeon, only the boss is a player this time. I think it is fun.

The best action combat system I have played is Monster Hunter, and the second best doesn’t even come close. MH has no “dodge skill” that will make you invulnerable during the animation. “Dodge” is simply a method of moving. You move out from the attack, you dodge it. You move into the attack, you get hit. That’s the “dodge” part.
Dodging in MH grants a very short invulnerability period. Evade +1 and +2 extend it to a duration long enough that you can use that invulnerability very intentionally, though MH does have the caveat that some things can never be dodged at all.
I didn’t know that. I didn’t make use of the invulnerability period at all.
I disagree with a lot though. Monster Hunter has an abominable combat system. Utterly unintuitive and every bit the opposite of the fluid, fun system I enjoy here.
MH’s controls are horrid, but the numerous functions have to be mapped to buttons somehow. Once you learn the controls it’s not too bad. Each weapon also provides a distinct combat style, combo set, etc, with their own strengths and weaknesses. When appropriately geared (as opposed to overgeared), teamwork ranges from being useful to absolutely necessary. GW2 PvE combat can (and often does) boil down to mashing 1 and dodging when necessary. Boss fights/champs/etc are a complete and total clusterkitten here because there’s no trinity, no aggro management, no taunting, etc – bosses just wander around swinging at whoever they seem to feel like, spamming AOE and cleaves to make up for how easily everyone can avoid taking damage.
MH has a steep learning curve and awful controls, but personally, the combat there is vastly more rewarding.
Also, “clusterkitten” is excellent.
Horrid control? MH is very successful in my culture. Almost every gamers I know love MH and those who didn’t get to play it drool about it. No one has ever said that before. I thought MH is a global example of how an action game should be made. Looks like I am in a very different culture. Let me take my note and write this down.
But yeah, the combat in MH is very rewarding.
Just for the record that weapon mastery thing was how they used to do it. It was too easy to unlock all the weapon skills at low level and was too much trouble to balance.
Make it hard then. It’s simply the same, why would there be balancing problem?
