Wasn’t the whole point of bags to completely subvert their own mechanics and make magic find useless. Oh, ya, it was. That’s the part that really burns me honestly, way more than the clicking.

This. Yup.

Because Gaheron forbid someone with +300MF loot one extra precursor among the population…

I personally think Magic Find was a terrible mistake and should just be completely removed from the game. Back when it was still on armor people would run dungeons with Magic Find equipment and get rewarded for contributing considerably less to the group. They should have just taken it out rather than simply mess around with it.

As for the Bagception, that has gotten as carried away as the currencies too. I really think Anet underestimates how much these things turn players off…

Letter from a Ranger: On the rise of the DH

I pretty much just play a ranger, possibly because I may be too burnt out on MMOs to get into alts, but I came back to see what’s been done with the game and to see if HoT is worth picking up. The long and short of it is that I’m just not at all excited for the expansion and I’m likely going to sit this one out. I certainly had not imagined my class’ final form would be a full fledged healer when I first created my Ranger when this game first launched; one of the biggest reasons I gave this game a chance was because I didn’t think ANet was even going to make a healer class like that. It doesn’t help that they seemed to have gotten confused as to which specialization belongs on which class…

Pretty much the only thing I have to look forward to are wyverns. Still can’t get gryphons, raptors and other things that would be obvious choices based on other games I’ve played.

And then I’m reminded that seemingly every single item in the game can only be bought with it’s own, exclusive currency. I really don’t understand what’s so horrible about having only one or two currencies rather than 30 or 40, but that’s a tangent.

I really want to find an excuse to pick up the expansion, but I’m just not feeling it. The whole “kill the next dragon boss” plot that gets recycled again and again and again doesn’t even get me curious anymore, so I basically have to focus on the gameplay of the class I have time to play because it’s the style I prefer. Sadly, that isn’t helping me there either.

I’d say I’d be better off going back to WoW, but the instant I see that first exclamation point over an NPC’s head I’ll be like “NOPE! Not doing this! Cancelling subscription!” The event system works for me because getting swept up in adventure is a lot more fun than the typical MMO structure that I’ve grown to absolutely despise. As I told my friends at GW2 launch “In Soviet Russia, zones quest YOU”

So yes, this situation is really kind of heartbreaking.

That’s the character select screen, it’s cropping my character and there’s no way to zoom out of that. I suppose it might be l little confusing because I let the UI elements fade out before I took the screenshot.

The “Select Race” title sits level to the Norn’s shoulder. Once I’m actually in game, it’s actually not so terrible, so I’d hate to have to crop my field of view just because of a couple of inflexible screens…

I’m actually quite surprised this still hasn’t been fixed, it’s the only game I’ve had an issue with in this aspect ratio. I’ve tried searching the forums but I’m evidently quite bad at it. Is there a solution out there that I may have missed?

Thank you, Konig, this is actually immensely helpful. So the long and short of it is that all of the leveling content is backstory.

I can see why linear storytelling spread across a non-linear game has its hickups. For example, running through Diessa and fighting through a dust storm which is happening now, only to stumble across that giant in Nageling which happened quite some time prior. This will get even more obtuse as the game ages and the gap in time widens.

As for what is actually canon, it may make more sense to me once I complete the Personal Story at least once, but evidently many of the details remain inconclusive.

I’ll keep a closer eye on the level of the content, that should help out a lot.

I have a pretty similar setup, Gmoney, (but with slightly older 6950) and framerates are largely hit or miss. Some zones seem to be just geometrically designed better than others, I think. I’ve NEVER seen Lion’s Arch run well on any machine, for example. There were a few spots in the Asura starting areas somewhere that went slow for no apparent reason, but it has been a while. Changing graphical settings pretty much do nothing for framerate.

I don’t know if it’s an engine triangle culling issue or if they just need to go back and remodel the problem areas, but I’d probably hop into this game a lot more if the performance was more consistent.

If by “Main World content” you refer to Halloween, The Lost Shores, and Wintersday – then yes.

I was more referring to the heart events, actually, but then there are problems with that too now that I think of it.

When Rytlock and Eir run through the Ascalon Catacombs the Plains of Ashford would no longer be haunted. Perhaps those are level based too, but this makes it nigh impossible to keep track of since I hit 80 after having explored only a fraction of the world and I admit to not paying too close attention to that number in the bottom left corner of the screen at this point.

As for PC commanders, I don’t suppose there would be one for every choice of NPC and race allegiances possible in the Personal Story too? Some of these would have to be mutually exclusive, I would imagine. Also, there is quite a bit of faith involved in taking in the quantum collective of all personal stories as the canon when you personally never meet even one of your other counterparts, the pieces don’t fit so neatly in place (granted, I have a ways to go before I can decide anything).

I’m not going to go around RPing the idea that I’m Trahearne’s personal friend and all, but I have no idea what my character would actually know or what he has actually experienced; what is common knowledged or what even actually happened… or when it happened.

I wish I could switch out my XP bar with a time-line that fills in the relevant spots as I progress. ¬_¬

I thought it was during that initial confrontation among the members of Destiny’s Edge where I saw the fountain under construction, but I may have had that mixed up with the Halloween event now that you mention it. It was a little disorientating at the time so I probably got confused.

I’m not going to worry about Zhaitan being defeated as a spoiler as that seemed to be a given right from the get go (I admit, the writers really like to lay it on thick whenever there’s a challenge or a tragedy). If anything it makes it all less confusing.

So the timeline looks like:

1st: Dungeons / Personal Story, concurrent with level of content
2nd: Main World content, After Zhaitan
3rd: Living Story = Present

I had JUST completed retaking claw island before checking back here and it seems be good timing for me to grasp the answers a little better. I’m not sure about every permutation of the Personal Story existing as separate, canonical commanders as that would mean a considerable amount of overlap and Trahearne gaining several second-in-command figures.

Kyran Foxfire.4139

I’m still relatively new to this setting and I’d like to see if I can get all of this straightened out. I’ve casually climbed to 80, but I still feel rather alien.

Almost thirty missions deep into the personal story, I get the sense that it runs right along the “main plot” of Guild Wars 2, being the rather cleché “save the world from dragons” with you being close the center of it all, but it’s a branching storyline at that.

Then there are the standard world events that take place… somewhere along the timeline, but I’m not exactly sure when. Coming in and out of instances within Lion’s Arch has shown me that fountain at varying stages of construction had me wonder if I was simply catching up with history.

With the Living Story, it appears to be side-plots altogether though I’m not sure where it all fits in with this whole dragon menace or if it is even still an issue. I would have thought the Personal Story would be how you’d fit as a cog within the grand scheme while the Living Story advanced the main plot, but it evidently is just the opposite.

That leaves me wondering what the canon actually is. Do I just assume whatever the mainstays do stick while everything that has to do with me can be cast aside? Does everything in the persistent world take place after the personal story? Help me out if you don’t mind.

Say you needed medicine, but the fellow who had said medicine was only willing to trade it for bread to satisfy his current need and you did not happen to have any. You only had clothing to trade. You then have to seek out someone who was willing to trade bread for clothing or, worse yet, trade another item that could be traded for bread and then for medicine.

That’s what happens when there’s no common medium for trade. Every simple thing requires a specific item, task or whatnot.

Now in Guild Wars 2… heh… let’s just say I’m a pretty casual player, but seemingly every time I log in I discover new currencies in the game. I don’t even know what half of them are for, I just see a rainbow of numbers cluttering up my inventory. Heck, I still don’t even get what Karma is suppose to add to the game besides being inconvenient, but I’ve just been rolling with it.

Then seemingly every single NPC in the game has come up with their own unique currency that only they are willing to accept. I pretty much don’t even worry about it anymore. “You just got a laurel!” Yay, I’m an Olympian now! Oh nevermind, that’s just the new money of the week, I’ll just throw this in the big pile of other useless monies.

I’m sure there’s something I should know if anyone cares to enlighten me, but if not I’m just going to worry about gold/gems so I can just play the darn game like I have been.

Group influence across servers

Kyran Foxfire.4139

Players of a guild can still play together if they are on multiple servers, but they are not rewarded for doing so. I’d like to see that change.

For example, an individual earns 2 influence for their guild for every event they complete and 20 influence if they are with at least one guildmate – BUT only if that guildmate is home to the same server. If they are on different servers, they each earn influence at solo rates. They may as well be in separate guilds entirely.

I understand that each server is going to have a separate pool of influence for any given guild, that is not what I am concerned about. Both pools should get the group rate because the sum of the two is never applied to anything.

I’ll echo this. As I gradually level up I noticed that I’ve been gradually getting worse so I decided to start rethinking a few things. Bears and arctodus were more or less the only pets that aren’t simply a liability up until I focused on regeneration traits and now even my Moa can tank to an extent. I still have to check how it works out with the flying birds but hopefully they aren’t completely useless anymore.

I’m still only mid-level, but I’m finding that glass cannons of any sort do not work in this game… at all. Not on the surface, definitely not in dungeons and NO WAY in PvP. The thing is most of the pets come to you in this frail state so anything that helps out their durability is invaluable for any prospective beastmaster.

I’m still working on it so I’m in need of advice as much as anyone, naturally.

Guesting = players able to create a Underflow

Interesting thought.
The thing is it would require cooperation from literally everybody. Most players will likely never find out about it and many that do may not wish to trouble themselves working out a guesting system for every odd zone they wish to drop by.

But if there’s no technical barrier to using guesting in that manner, it would certainly work for TC’s RP events if they wanted to avoid flooding the home server’s zone and avoid queues for people who arrive to specifically avoid the event.

It’s very simple and a technology that is already present and used in the game, except it’s only used to deal with overpopulation and not with underpopulation – so there is no excuse not to use it for this.

It’s one thing overflow the population on one server to another, it’s another thing to put a bunch of servers onto a new one. Given that we have WvW it’s safe to say at least that much is possible, but it’s a dramatically different set up. That’s why I’m not sure.

If it has been brought up before, it seems nobody came across any technical hurdles that would be involved. Oh well, this game is much more fun when the wilderness’ population is more than ‘realistic.’ Right now it plays a bit more like every other MMO and I hate the genre…

With the initial influx of players having plowed through the main world most zones have been left behind, which is only natural. Sure, there may be a very large number of players in the Gendarran Fields, for example, but they are across a dozen realms, each fending for themselves. If only those lonely souls could pool their talents just like their predecessors have during the initial launch.

What if those lost in these barren zones cross paths on a sort of shared “overflow” server? An overflow of many shards? Could it even work?

Needless to say, much of the magic that made the dynamic nature of these leveling zones such a blast is gone when attempting to solo. You know the deal, seasoned adventurers all go to whatever zone the big events happen and have no reason to keep the entirety of Tyria homogeneously saturated on even the most heavily packed servers.

I’m not at all technically savvy of the server architecture behind this game, but I had just entertained the idea of a reverse-overflow server (underflow server?) and I thought I’d share simply because I’m curious of how badly the whole thing would fall apart. :P

Why are so many willing to sell things on the TP at a loss?

That may be the best solution. I admit it’s convenient to be able to compare things to the trading post while at a vendor. Also, in games that require you to visit a specific set of NPCs for this, there tends to be a serious crowd around them.

As for the question about whether to vendor items or salvage them for mats, that depends on the item. Last I checked, there’s a good demand for Jute Scraps at the moment so any low level light armor or shredded rags would be totally worth salvaging to put on the market. For most everything else, not so much… at least not yet.

If that was in response to me, Wazabi, that had nothing to do with my point. :P I don’t really care if it’s a buyer’s or seller’s market, I’m just stating it as a fact.

There is no advantage to selling things for less than you would to a vendor. None, zilch, nada. You don’t even save time. People do it because the button is there, but is by no means helping them in any manner of speaking. If they won’t accept reason that’s their own decision.

I’ve pointed it out quite recently and it has helped out many, so I can live with that.

This topic is coming up pretty frequently. Usually it comes down to:

-Don’t know there’s a tax.
-Don’t know there’s a nearby vendor.
-Too inattentive and and apathetic to realize what’s an optimal use of time.
-Just want to put something away for the time being.

What that basically means is that it’s a buyer’s market right now.

As far as I can tell, item listings on the Trading Post stay up indefinitely. Hopefully this won’t eventually cause another collapse of the trading system, but I’m more concerned about how it affects things.

*It allows the TP to be a much cheaper bank upgrade.
*Nothing boomerangs back to the mailbox when it doesn’t sell, it either stays listed or sits in the pickup window. Anything in danger of being sold can just be canceled at no additional cost and it’s still stored for you.
*The lists just get bigger and bigger at a frightening pace.

And what’s even funnier is that there are numerous buy orders for Account Bound items. That appears to be a waste of resources for every party involved.

I couldn’t find any word about trading post time limits. Any savvy individuals out there know the story?

Actually you are not losing any money. Think about it. It didn’t cost you anything but time to kill that mob and pick up the item. You then put it on the TP from the field. You didn’t spend any money using waypoints to get to a vender. Not to mention it still didn’t cost you anything to begin with.

Actually, it instantly costs you 5% to use the TP. That much is a guaranteed loss.

As far as costing time, in the real world time does indeed have cost, one can argue this to be true in game as well. For example, if you need to scrounge up 20s or 1g for training manuals for your chosen class and you only have a couple hours a night to play, you will want to use this time effectively. You can spend a couple minutes running to your nearest vendor (if you do not want to use a waypoint) to get your money right away, or you can use the TP to post your loot, losing 5% immediately in hopes of gaining 85% of the vendor value in the coming days. If they do sell, you must find a TP NPC to make your claim. In most cases this ends up spending money without saving time.

If you end up short for your training manual when the time comes, you will have to spend more time finding ways to make up the difference before you can continue to advance your character proper. Selling things directly to a vendor while working up to this point would have easily covered this difference. The amount of coin collected per hour of gameplay would certainly have been higher and the only difference is an occasional walk to any of the ubiquitous vendors.

The long and short of it is that the TP makes for good storage as there’s no obvious expiration on listings on a flooded market, but your wasting both time and money actually trying to sell loot for a 1c premium.

Just to be clear, the original post was designed as a friendly explanation for those who may have been confused about what the item tooltips might actually have meant or how the Trading Post actually works.

As for those using it as cheap, limitless, wireless storage, I would have to check with Anet to see if this allowance is deliberate. You have to visit a Trading Post NPC or spend gems to pick up purchases and earnings, yet it seems many find it to be handy to use the TP as not only an ever present vendor, but also a bank. I really couldn’t tell you if that’s considered exploitation or not. If it is I’d imagine they would have let us know by now.

As it stands you have to talk to the NPC to pick up your purchases while you can post things up for sale wirelessly. That’s backwards from other games I’ve played and now I see why. This makes the TP a more convenient way to offload junk than regular vendors. That’s just wrong on so many levels. :o

I suspect once the more enterprising players gain more liquidity and storage within the game, they will buy up many of these under-priced goods and flip them back on the market for a reasonable price to gain massive profits.

If inventory space is a major concern during your travels, it’s possible that a good portion of your loot is getting filled up by basic crafting materials, or “collectables.”

Click on the gear in your Inventory window and hit “Deposit all collcetables.” More often than not this will clear a considerable amount of space for more valuable loot.

When you post an item for a single copper above what the vendors will buy it for, you lose a substantial amount of money on a successful sale.

True story.

There seems to be some confusion on how the Trading Post actually works as I do not believe each and every individual in this category is aware that they are a charity giver. The game interface doesn’t make it completely clear what is going on so allow me to shed some light on the matter.

As per the wiki, there are costs to selling:

The listing fee for selling on the Trading Post is 5% of the sales price. This listing fee is not returned even if the listing is cancelled. Upon successful trade an additional 10% fee is deducted from the price, i.e. the total cost of a successful sale is 15%.

The minimum listing fee is 1 copper, and at least the listing fees seem to be mathematically rounded (Meaning: 29 copper sales price = 1,45 Copper fee -> rounded down to 1 Copper, 30 copper sales price = 1.5 copper sales fee, rounded up to 2 copper)

For example, if you find a weapon that sells for 99c at the vendor and you put it on the TP for 1 Silver, you instantly lose 5 silver just for posting that listing. In the event that it actually sells, they buyer pays 1s for that weapon and you receive 90c. The net result is that your 1s weapon earned you 85c when you could have simply sold to a vendor for 99c.

Let’s recap. You find an item that’s worth 50c and you want to sell it. Here are a couple of options:

Sell to Vedor for 50c
*You receive 50c
*Instant deposit

Post to TP for 51c
*Wait, possibly hours or days
*May not sell at all – lose 3c for nothing (5% listing fee = 2.55c, then round up)
*Once sold, you have to run to a TP NPC to collect earnings
*You net 43c (-3c Listing Fee -(10% sale price = 5.1c rounded down)) = -8c

Believe it or not, many MANY of you are opting for the latter option, taking 43c with more effort over 50c. You lose substantially more coin with higher value items.

If the math gives you a headache*, just sell to the vendor. You’ll make substantially more money this way.

*[Edit: Fixed math from 38c to 43c because I didn’t proofread after making adjustments to examples the first time. >_<]

This is not true of all members of the guild, but a random few. Bug report and screen shot submitted last night. Thank you.

Try dragging the guild window closer to the top-left of the screen and the emblem may appear.

This used to affect everyone in our guild, but yesterday those with nVidia cards could see it anywhere on the screen while those with AMD cards still had the issue. I don’t know if that proves anything or is simply a fluke, but I thought I’d share.

Holy carp, that actually works. There’s an invisible, fixed position on the screen to the left of which, the emblem displays without issue. To the right of it, it doesn’t. Dragging the guild window across the screen, you can actually see it disappearing across this mystery threshold, like someone put another window on top of it that only affects the emblem. I can’t even begin to imagine the cause.

When Arenanet finds the time, I would desperately love to hear the explanation of this one – it’s bound to be amusing.

Thanks for the tip, and hopefully it’s something we won’t have to do in the future!

It sounds like just an odd issue with a UI mask. The good news is after tonight’s update that was just deployed, the emblem no longer vanishes for any of us now! Woot!

Everything else is working fine with our guild, except the guild emblem not showing for some people on the guild menu, which is a screen resolution issue I guess, because I can see it fine on my laptop but not on my desktop.

It does make sense because your laptop is lower resolution. It sounds odd, but here’s what I found so far.

As someone else mentioned earlier in this thread, moving the guild window toward the upper-left end of the screen will reveal the guild emblem. Looking at a screenshot I took it appears that any part of the emblem that is farther than 512 pixels from the left or from the top of the screen gets cropped off.

I’m not sure why there’s a 512×512 mask for guild emblems stuck in that portion of the screen, but the higher your resolution, the less likely you’re going to see your guild emblem without dragging that window over…

P.S. Okay, so it seems the shape of this mask is a bit more complicated than that, but one corner of it is where I mentioned.
