If this is the case, then wearing some soldier/tanking items could help ;-)

I also play Guardian from time to time, but didn’t notice any particular interest by mobs in me, definitely not frequently. Sword/Focus, Scepter/Shield. the complete Boost-gear, it’s soldier if I’m right.

Can I just explore the Season 3 maps ?

in Players Helping Players

Lanhelin.3480

So, my question is: can I explore the new Season 3 maps without having to go through all that kind of story-driven conversation and cutscenes? How?

I just did this yesterday: After starting an episode you have to play the first 1 to 2 missions to unlock the map (make sure to enter it to get the first waypoint unlocked). Then you can start the next episode to unlock the next map. Your character will keep the first unlocked wp on every map. You need to play the first episode a bit further to unlock the wild magic mastery tree, but that’s all. Gliding #2 and to be able to use the jumping mushrooms is useful.

Playing a toon of the opposite gender?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lanhelin.3480

Lanhelin.3480

Does anyone else feel uneasy playing a toon of the opposite gender, I do.

No. I do not choose toons because of their sex, but other things factor in. E.g. I had a name in mind for a female Mesmer, had no Asura at the time and I do not like the male Asura voicing so I decided to create a female one.
Back when I created my female Norn Guardian I did so, because I rarely ever met female Norn Guardians in the open world and ebony Norn not at all.
I created my female Human Mesmer for similar reasons, name, profession, voicing. So I have three female toons out of 15 I play from time to time.

I have no male Human, no male Asura, no female Sylvari and no female Charr. Most are male Charr. But I’m open minded for the future. I also try to always keep a certain distance and to not confuse myself with my toons, so I have access to the whole range of character creation which grants more diversity when playing the game.

If you like to do the support role, you’ll be fine with it. Recently I tried a similar build in Fractals and I was pretty disappointed regarding my own damage output. In Fractals it’s also much more likely to face Mobs 1vX from time to time and this wasn’t fun. So I rebuilt again for phantasm-direct-damage. The Alacrity probably is nice for party members, but it’s just a bonus and not really needed at all. Compaired to what I lost, I considered it not to be worth. But this just was my experience with Chrono, maybe it suits you more.

New character, War, Guard or Rev?

in Players Helping Players

Lanhelin.3480

Regarding leveling both Revenant and Warrior seem to be heavily dependent on level-appropriate gear starting at about level 50+ At least this was my experience so far. So prepare to fully equip them when needed. The Guardian is much more forgiving because of his various self-healings and possibilities to avoid damage entirely and also regarding the chosen skilltrees during the leveling process. If I were you I’d use the boost on the Warrior, because Rev imo is easier to level up compaired to War but not as easy as Guardian.

Could be Guardian the thing i'm looking for?

I have looked around for some builds but came to the same place where i was when i started GW2, it seems on Metabattle and Co there no sword an board builds. But i like this playstyle so much imo it fits perfectly to the class fantasy.

Stay away from metabattle and similar sites, because the suggested builds there are highly optimated for raid gameplay (10 people) and raid synergies.

Play your Guardian like you want. If you like S&B – play it. Aside from Raids (and in this field Raids played by super-optimizers only) nobody ever cares about your build – it most likely will be you, who starts to care about it. E.g. when you get defeated in a row in PvP or WvW. There are plenty of things you can do in GW2. As a returner I play a few months now, mainly Guardian and Mesmer but I’m not yet interested in playing the Raid, I did some dungeons, some fractals and mostly open world pve. I don’t like Chronomancer so I play Phantasm-dps on my Mesmer. On my Guardian I currently play a Scepter/Shield, Sword/Focus build, but I also often try different things, weapons and builds.

The short answer would be : “no cheating”. These rules are general legal wording meant to cover many types of contests. I imagine the line you quoted would rather apply to a context such as having a music creation contest and a contestant trying to generate samples through an algorithm etc.

Thank you for your answer. It was a bit difficult for us to figure out the meaning, because the german translation says (translated back to English by me): “The participation by using automated devices and/or programs is not permitted. Such entries will be void.” Since every computer is an automated device and every drawing software works automated to a certain degree, this was confusing.

I read a few other rule sets of contests from other companies where this sentence appears and it always refers to registration processes for sweepstakes and things like that, to void entries by bots.

Rework their overcharge effects, have them automatically re-overcharge after x seconds so that there is benefit to leaving them out and give them better defence.

This.

Furthermore I’d suggest to improve the smack, whack, thwack mechanic to be able to repair turrets while hitting mobs instead of having to hit the turrets. I always wondered why this mechanic even is in the game, because I highly doubt there are lot’s of engis who actually have the time to or even care about repairing their turrets during a fight. Increase healing % and distribute 33% to every active turret (Turret, Turret, Turret, Tool Kit, Elite). If one uses only one turret, the 66% are lost.

Phantasmal force rework

in Mesmer

Posted by: Lanhelin.3480

Lanhelin.3480

@Lanhelin – You misunderstand the point of PF. Its not supposed to beef up a shatter build, but a phantasm one. A build focused on sustained damage.

Building for sustained damage imo excludes shattering illusions, despite one could use the F buttons. E.g. I also use PF in a sustained dmg build but barely ever shatter. The proposed rework probably also means that the Mesmer would lose all stacks in downed state, similar to any other boon. Since I use PF it often saved my life when I was downed, because the stacks on the illusions weren’t affected and built up even further (on iRogue for example, that’s available in downed state only).

Maybe there could be a trait that works reverse to PF like “Phantasmal Burst”, where phants get a certain amount (half of what PF would give when maxed?) of the boon when they’re summoned and lose % on every attack or every few seconds, so shatter players would rather want to destroy them after their first attack. For this purpose I’d again either rework MoF or put the Scepter trait elsewhere and replace it with PB.

There is another Rune with different stats available that grants +25% speed: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Superior_Rune_of_Speed – it’s a lot easier to aquire (you can either buy the Lodestones in the ah or farm them on your own. I did this in Malchor’s Leap by killing spark elementals. About every 50th dropped one) and the additional vitality also probably isn’t the worst stat in pvp because of conditions, but I have to admit, that I barely play WvW or PvP.

It should affect the mesmer himself instead of illusions directly because as it currently works, the entire buildup is still lost when you shatter.

Wouldn’t you take MoF instead of PF when you play a Shatter-build? Because PF only affects phant’s direct damage, not shatter-damage.

If Shatter-players consider MoF inferior to PF then MoF should be reworked.

With HoT all professions got a new specialization (the elite). The same with PoF. RAWR referred to that.

I recommend you to join a guild and do some dungeon-runs with a guild party first. I do so too and we also have Minion-Necros there and nobody was ever kicked for playing her/his build.

Minion-Necros have little possibilities to support the party, because all utility slots are occupied by minions and also their weapon skills mainly distribute conditions to enemies, a lot of them just decreasing something instead of damaging (its the minions who are the #1 source of damage – and if they get killed during a fight, the Necro loses a lot of damage and has to wait to resummon them).
In Open World PvE for the purpose of aggro-grabbing one minion usually is sufficient. When I leveled my Necro, I used a Minion-Well-Hybrid to both have an aggro-grabber and to be able to provide some support. The Flesh Golem is very good but has a big flaw: it cannot swim and will follow you through water only a very short distance (a few “steps”) then it disappears and the cd starts to tick.
Recently Minion-Necros (and Turret-Engis) also achieved notoriety for “afk-farming”, which means just standing somewhere, letting the minions kill mobs and loot them, preferably in heart-quest related zones, making it harder for other players to complete these. This led to a general negative feeling towards Minion-Necros too.

You actually only skip leveling up and the need to buy/craft lvl 80 exotic gear and bags with more space. You cannot max all skill trees and utilities with points granted by the boost only (it’s 398 points – enough for all utilities and core trees, but for the elite you need additional 250 points. If you decide to max the elite, you’ll have points left for another two trees and 28 points for utility skills / or enough to unlock all utilities but only 50 left for the trees, which isn’t enough to even max one of them. So be careful when assigning them as this is irreversible) but you will need the hero points (and probably mastery points) from core tyria maps too.

If you want to play the daylies you’ll want all waypoints on core tyria maps unlocked, because the daylies want you to do something there frequently.

You can learn all crafting disciplines on one character but can only have active two at the same time by default (you can buy additional slots in the gem shop for a total of 4 active disciplines. you do not lose any progress or recipes on inactive ones and can learn every unknown recipe at any time no matter which discipline is active).

Soloing content (intentionally not designed for soloing) requires understanding of the class, also what is possible and what not. Any class can be used to solo content as long as the player knows what she/he’s doing.

Thoughts on decreasing waypoints

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lanhelin.3480

Lanhelin.3480

The only thing I don’t like about waypoints is when they are not reachable because contested. This adds nothing to the game but annoyance for players. It reduces the number of waypoints even further. In my opinion this should be removed, because contested actually doesn’t mean conquered. If they are contested I cannot join the event but have to use another waypoint far away. Furthermore on certain maps there are waypoints that are completely destroyed (but on the map also shown as contested, forever). If it has to be so, waypoints should not be usable when they actually are conquered.

Easy OPEN world Power Build ?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Lanhelin.3480

Lanhelin.3480

Recently I looked for a cheap power-rune with spreading might to allies (to build up phantasmal force stacks faster) and crafted a set of sup. rune of the Privateer. First I thought about to change the sixth one for another rune that gives additional power – but the 6th bonus actually is pretty amazing. The bird hits every 1,5-2 sec, does damage of about 8xx to 12xx and crits for about 2k at lvl 80, it lasts and has a cd of 60 seconds, then reappears about every 2nd hit I get, grabs aggro and usually kills one or even two mobs while I am afk. Going afk in the wilderness previousely was a pretty bad idea, I often was dead or almost dead when I returned.
I never heard me yelling “Yarr” yet as the 4th bonus says, but the bird made my mesmer-life much easier than before. It doesn’t make a significant difference in HoT but it’s an additional source of dmg. I use S/S and still the staff, because it grants more mobility and protection which imo is more important on HoT maps.

Shield on Guard any good?

in Guardian

In PvE the shield has its niches. #5 isn’t stationary but follows the Guardian while she/he moves. E.g. in the guild challenge where one has to protect the crab-holder the shield is pretty useful, as mace is too.

On the aggro-page the wiki says that several players had the impression that certain champs focus on players with shields (unconfirmed). I had this impression too, but only regarding a few champs, like ogres. I mostly use the shield, when fighting centraltyria-champs or during escort events.

Lanhelin.3480

Every time I watch a dungeon cutscene and after the cutscene is over and fades out, I get disconnected back to character menue. So I always cancel them to avoid this. This never ever happens with vista-cutscenes in the open world for example.

And yesterday I did way 1 in the catacombs, I canceled every cutscene except the last one that one has to watch (freeing the giant). I feared to get a dc, but it didn’t happen. Maybe this could give you ANet technicians a hint what could cause the dcs.

Currently I’m quite limited due to a thunderstorm incident that destroyed my system, so I play GW2 on low settings on a Win 10 HP 250 G5 notebook, 8 gb RAM, Radeon R5 M330 2GB. It works, even World Bosses when they are the daily are still playable.

But cutscenes in dungeons are my nemesis. Besides making this work another solution could be to let the avatar stay a few seconds (30?) where it was in the dungeon and not to immediately catapult it out of it.

Can we/will we ever get Fishing?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Fishing could also be combined with the event mechanic. E.g. a certain amout of catched fish has to be thrown back into the water within a time limit to draw attention of a special champ or legendary mob. So besides the single activity this could fit pretty well into GW2.

Phantasmal Force: several questions

in Mesmer

Posted by: Lanhelin.3480

Lanhelin.3480

With PoF Prepatch we got a new trait in the illusion tree, Phantasmal Force. It increases damage of phants every time they attack (4%) or gain might (1%) up to a maximum of additional 25%. Obviously this trait – and regarding the time table below – is meant for Mesmers who do not shatter their Illusions.

With Phantasmal Haste, no might buff and based on the related wiki page phants get the 25% with the 7th hit (rounded from 6,25) resulting in hitting with +25% damage at the 8th attack after XX seconds per phant. (These numbers also do not include the time they need to land their first hit, as it also depends on the distance to the mob they have to run to first):

Avenger: 44,1 seconds
Berserker: 42,7
Defender: 28,7
Disenchanter: 15,4
Duelist: 46,2
Mage: 35
Mariner: 59,5
Rogue: 31,5
Swordsman: 24,5
Warden: 86,1
Warlock: 39,9
Whaler: 59,5

Defender (utility), Disenchanter (utility), Swordsman (offhand sword) and Mage (torch) seem to be the phants who get the bonus the quickest (but except Swordsman also do the lowest damage per hit). I didn’t count in Rogue, because the Mesmer has to be in downed state to summon it. While the idea of adding damage to phants is a good one, the time it takes to get the bonus seems pretty long, although I do not know how the might boon mechanic in this case works. (Also what about Alacrity and Quickness, do they affect phants too?) E.g. summoning the swordsman in melee range and hitting with sword strike gives both the Mesmer and every Swordsman an 8-stack might buff. Whether this results in +8% damage or just 1% I don’t know. And to keep it “lasting as short as possible” the Mesmer only should do this three times, else one Swordsman gets replaced by another fresh one who has to build up the bonus again.

I do not know the Mirage traits and gameplay, so whether Chrono or Core or Mirage would synergize best we have yet to figure out. Any thoughts? Or even answers?

Boonshare ranged passive doesn’t exist. You can give boons to your allies, but that’s melee, assuming your allies don’t move. You can ranged dps and that IS super passive (see: Condi Mes ) but it’s a selfish build.

Condi Mes actually does not have to be that selfish like the one in the video you posted, who only uses the iDuelist and even hasn’t slotted SoI. This is just one build but not representative for Condi Mes. There are plenty possibilities to provide boons to allies, not only the signet but one has to build for it and to use the right weapons and utility skills.

I don’t like the HoT maps. Even nowadays after them been made “easier” than before. None of my characters has a single elite spec maxed. I like the Core-Tyria maps. There I have the freedom of exploration and the tougher enemies all are in “their” places that are both easily reachable or avoidable.

In HoT maps I can’t get rid of the feeling to be in danger no matter where I go. Sure, there also are a few places where enemies are neutral, but to get there or leaving these means to get in danger again. It’s even possible to get instantly attacked and killed after teleporting to an uncontested waypoint. HoT maps still feel like huge open world dungeons that put me off rather than invite me to explore them. No other map ever made me wanting to leave it asap, but the HoT maps do.

I did the necessary steps to get the glider and, should the occasion arise do harvesting and panorama dailies there, but nothing else.

When leveling a character just by map completions one usually reaches level 80 in one of the 50-60 maps. It’s a pretty bad idea trying to get the glider immediately after hitting 80 this way. I did this a couple of months ago with my been there, done that character and it also felt pretty difficult. If the HoT difficulty would have been similar to core-tyria 80 maps, I probably would have enjoyed the expansion.

I hope PoF won’t put me off too.

Get a third AoE might stack if you use arcane explosion too while fire field is active. Switch to water when selfheal or healing allies is necessary. At least for me S/D was way better than S/F while leveling.

For leveling purpose I recommend Mace/Axe and Hammer. Mace for fire field and might stack explosion combo, axe for teleport behind mob. Hammer for attacks from a distance. Mounts will make most existing maps feel small.

I’m not sure about that, because GW2-Mounts won’t run that fast (although this is what we commonly expect from mounts). Movement speed will be increased by about 30% only (similar to Swiftness boon), if the information given in this thread was right: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/All-POF-mount-info

Speed in Centraltyria and HoT also could be limited to 25% which equals most perma-speed possibilities the various professions have.

No structure in this game kinda turns me off

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lanhelin.3480

Lanhelin.3480

GW2’s structure works a bit different compaired with other MMOs. E.g. in many MMOs there are Quest-hubs and the players are often guided to the next hub by a quest.

In GW2 it works similar but smoother and unobtrusive, especially when the player follows event-npcs after the event has been completed and listens to their conversations, which often leads to the next event, although there are no indications on the map or the ui that something is going to start soon.

E.g. in Diessa Plateau in the Village of Butcher’s Block there is the cook who wants some eggs from worms in the cave nearby. If you complete this event and then immediately go away, because it looks like there’s nothing to do anymore, you much likely will miss the next event in this small chain (fighting the Worm Champion) unless it’s mentioned in chat by a player. This event only starts when the egg collecting event was successfully completed and about 5 Minutes later.

Patience pays in GW2.

Rev weapon issues

in Revenant

Posted by: Lanhelin.3480

Lanhelin.3480

What I’m suggestion is that the skill actually travel 1200 range like it says. That means if it goes down a cliff, up ledge, over a mount, through a river and over a hill then so be it. The thing should travel 1200 range regardless of what is in the way!

Rev is not the only one with this problem. Guardian also suffers from this issue with Sword #2. The teleport works if in its range one also could run to the target. If this path is discontinuos or even non-existent at all, also the teleport doesn’t work, despite the target is in range. Mesmer probably has this problem too (not with Portal but with Blink).

E.g. I can teleport upstairs on bandit’s treehouses, because there also are winding stairs I could run up instead. But I cannot teleport to the ghosts on top of the JP in Diessa even if (and because) we are separated by just one few feet jump distance only.

It’s how teleports work in this game, so it’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

Reason why I want to main mesmer is because it’s hard for me to get used to and it’s challenging so I was wondering if anyone has any beginner tips to survival on a mesmer

My few suggestions:

  • Do not shatter your illusions until you get used to the weapons and skills. They will serve you better when they stay alive as long as possible and distract the mobs attentions from you.
  • Use Staff and x/Sword as second weapon set to have both a melee and ranged phantasm available. If you use scepter but don’t want to create clones with the auto-attack just ctrl+right click on the skill to switch off automated attack.
  • Tab-target a mob and start the fight with staff 2 to create a clone and ideally get pushed out of range, so your attack won’t land but only the clones one and the mob will attack the clone instead of you. Then continue to summon clones and/or phantasms.
  • If you have to fight more than one mob, tab-target through them and assign one illusion to each one of them. Use staff and circle around while its auto attack will bounce between the mobs.
  • Get Phantasmal Disenchanter asap, because it is one of the most useful phantasms, it has a bouncing attack that hits multiple mobs and cures conditions on itself, you, your illusions and other players.
  • Start with Inspiration tree to get regeneration from phants, then skill the Illusions tree. The third tree depends on your prefered weapons/playstyle.
  • Always keep moving except you use Sword/x.

I bought HoT about a year ago but never dived deep into it because of these artificial limitations. It totally breaks the vision of an open world. Instead, it’s a pretty limited world. Probably I’ll do the same when PoF is released. So the argument, mentioned more than once, to go back to the original virtues is just pr-speech?

Mount Mushroom?

So instead of having to use static objects like mushrooms or tunnels to get somewhere, we will have to use mounts? I hope I didn’t understand it right in the announcement video: will mounts make parts of the areas just easier to reach than for players without them or will they be limited and related to specific mounts? Original GW2 (because it was a main argument to get back to the roots): everything is accessible just by running there and exploring and figuring out a way.

What are your suggestions to change turrets?

I’d wish the turrets would either overload automatically every 12 to 15 seconds, at least in PvE, or get a highly reduced cd. Or a trait that adds this or that effect. Skills already have different effects in PvP/PvE, but the turrets now only serve as event-scarifier to earn gold reward.
Before the change I never feared a fight with Centraltyria-Champs during leveling. I used the overloads when I needed them, e.g. to make the gun-turret grabbing the attention or to put a bit more space between the mob and me by knocking it down with the rocket. I used the healing-turret’s overload to clean conditions when I actually had them and not at the beginning of a fight. The combo field of toolbelt skill Regenerating Mist has a too short duration and too small radius to blast heal with shield 4 or a bomb (in case the related blast-trait was chosen) – because to stop moving isn’t a good decision when fighting a champ chasing you.

Rant [& Question re: builds]

TL;DR: Are there any good PvE builds that don’t require clones/phantasms as the main source of damage, are power based, and use melee/physical attack skills? Preferably ones that deal good AOE damage.

You’re not the only one here. The times I personally used a F-Shatter is below 50x since release and I currently play my 3rd Mesmer to 80.

I use my illusions primarily to bind mob-attention to them, so I do not shatter them at all. But I do not play a power-only-build. The staff phantasm has a unique damage scaling mechanic: the more conditions a mob has, the more damage it does. You do not really need AoE, because with three illusions you basically can fight 3 or more mobs simultaneously, just tab through the mobs and assign one illusion to each one. Thanks to bouncing attacks all mobs will be affected by hits, especially when you use staff clones. It maybe takes a bit longer to down a group compaired to other professions, but it has great survivability and also works pretty good when soloing centraltyria champs. Staff-clones also have a unique utility: they can be summoned and will attack an enemy even without an obstacle-free line of sight. They will run around corners or run up-/downstairs to get into free LoS-distance.

This is my current build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vhAQNAW8clsnhC1YHawANwtGL4GUZASwrRDST2x5Mm9tB-e

I’d say Illusions and Inspiration is mandatory for better survivability, swap Dueling for Chaos when fighting lots of archers or attackers from a distance or when you just need a heal every 12 secs: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vhAQNAW8clsnhC1YHawANwtGLAHEaM6xKOHxoPtZCiQAA-e

The Heal skill and the Signet of Illusions also can be swapped, depending on the situation or your prefered playstyle. I use S/S as second weapon set to have a melee phantasm available whenever it’s necessary, like in narrow places, because Staff favors areas with enough space to circle. It also provides a constant regen-effect in close range for other melee-players.

When I was level 38 and scaled down to Brisban-lvl I managed to keep the bandit champ in the north busy, while all other players unfortunately were dead. I didn’t want the champ to reset, so I kept it and its respawning minions running from illusion to illusion until its hp went down from 80% to about 20% in about 5 minutes, when finally the other players got revived and we could finish the champ. I had the full Chaos tree and some points put into Inspiration at this time. Imo there are not many players/professions out there who are able to do this at this level. It wasn’t easy but satisfying.

Although my other two Mesmers have access to Chronomancer, this mastery is not very suitable for non-shatter-builds, or at least I couldn’t figure out a good setup yet.
