hope a developer can answer this when are you going to turn on high res character textures for the 64-bit client cause currently its not activated or turned on.

It selectively gets enabled or disabled depending on your computer’s specs, just as with the 32-bit client.

Then why is it that I can use high res character textures on the 32-bit client, but not the 64-bit client?

Thanks! That was really helpful. I feel slightly better that I’m not being routed through Europe at least, but the high pings that I’m getting in game really are troubling.

For the router issue, it is a wireless router, but my girlfriend and I are wired to it. We do reset it whenever we experience any really strange network oddities, but this is seeming to persist after restarting the router.

While I can’t directly improve the Telia→NCsoft hops, do you have any other pointers for tweaking with router settings to try to resolve that initial 150ms ping? We’re using an ASUS RT-N12 router if that makes a huge difference.

And thanks again for going into detail with your response up there :)

Those cities are what my girlfriend thought as well from just glancing at the name, but some Googling puts them much further away. Even going to www.telia.net is pretty telling, since it just forwards to telia.se, a Swedish provider website.

The telia.net addresses all show as in Europe from what I’ve found looking online though? Telia.net itself is apparently a service provider for Sweden and Finland.

sjo-b21-link.telia.net is France,
dls-b21-link.telia.net is Sweden,
sea-b1-link.telia.net is Sweden,
las-b21-link.telia.net is apparently somewhere in Europe as well, though I can’t find as detailed information about it as the others.

Where are you seeing that these are in the US?

Been noticing some horrible lag recently with tons of disconnects, so I figured I’d try a traceroute to see what was going on. The results were pretty out there, with hops going from Seattle (where I’m at) through France and other European servers before getting to ANet’s servers.

I will admit that other than seeing where slowdowns are happening, most traceroute info is a little over my head. I just hope this helps the network people at ANet figure out if anything can be done to fix this up. This problem only seems to be affecting GW2, and only just recently.

@Inculpatus and Khisanth: as long as those suggestions make the client to download all files before launching, I’m fine with that. I just wish they’d go into a bit more detail on the ins and outs.

@Lil Puppy: you circumvent client streaming and then say that it was a good thing in GW1 that GW2 left out? O_o

The streaming client is a good idea for people that don’t want to download large chunks at once. For people who don’t mind or want all updates loaded at once though, it’s a bit of a pain.

I had been using the -image command in GW1 to force all patch content to download, and I thought I could avoid the streaming client in GW2 by just not using the command line option for it. However, on logging in I see that the options menu has settings listed for content streaming. So how do I go about making it so I have no streaming whatsoever? I’d much rather grab the full patch at launch and have lower time waiting while in-game.

Undo the changes from the megaserver, admit it was a bad idea, rescind it, use beta testers far more and move on from an idea that kills WvW and destroys continuity of the storyline and ruins “server” affiliations across the board.

Why would you want that, exactly? I’ve had nothing but positive experiences from the megaserver. I can actually find people in PvE maps to play with or chat with whenever I play now, as opposed to before the update where people on my server were only in specific maps and seemed to vanish entirely after 11:00pm.

Much better than trying to guest to a different server and hope that people would be active in the areas I was heading to.

I need to upgrade my video card, can’t wait to go through the game with buttery framerates like my girlfriend does.

Out of curiosity what event was it?

Retrieving the stolen kegs of ale for the monastery. I’ve never actually seen the event to protect the kegs of ale fail, so I had no idea there was a followup for losing.

Best line of dialogue from Queensdale, the two hunters talking and one says something along the lines of “speaking of horrific beasts with insatiable hunger, did I tell you my wife is pregnant again?”

“Many a mighty beast has succumbed to my might!” “That reminds me! Did I tell you my wife is pregnant?” “… how does that remind you of your wife?”

I’ve spent far too much time in the hunting lodge. XD

Also love “Ran into an asura. She called me a bookah. I think she was hitting on me.” That and nearly every single line delivered by the same voice actor: “… Am I the mother? Blazing braces, this is what I get for working with the tree children.”

I’ve played GW2 since early access, for 3,327 hours at the time of writing this. I have 18 characters, nearly all of which have mapped Queensdale to 100%. I farm it for drops, explore it randomly to kill the time, use it for dailies whenever possible, and sit around and chat in /map on it. I love that map.

I just came across an existing dynamic event there that I had never seen before in all my time on that map.

I already loved the content you guys have made for the random and hilarious dialogs and minor details I find all over the place, but to still find a new experience in a map I’ve gone over countless times with a fine-toothed comb was a very pleasant surprise.

So thanks, from a person with far too much time on his hands, for making a world so much fun to explore.

Bot Hot Spots

Maoric.6132

My girlfriend and I were doing some late-night mapping in Frostgorge Sound to get the waypoints for the champ farming train, when suddenly a group of people came out of nowhere and started doing the run a little too organized. My girlfriend and I started thinking they were a bot group, especially when they started overlapping skill usage and vanished when I spooked the lead account by asking about them to see if anyone was at the wheel.

  1. Map and Location: Frostgorge Sound, in the champ farming areas (from [Drakkar Waypoint], [Dimotiki Waypoint], [Skyheight Steading Waypoint], and [Earthshake Waypoint])
  2. World (aka server): Sorrow’s Furnace
  3. Date and time of day, plus timezone: 3/21/2014 from around 3:32am Pacific to 3:45am Pacifc (at which point they all abruptly stopped doing the run when I spoke to them, after the character at the lead of the conga line was the only one to respond).

They all ran the exact same path, even when it was more out of the way, and though they were composed of different classes, all characters of one class would spam some of the same skills at the same time from what we could see.

I would definitely take a look into the game logs for this map at this time to figure out what was going on there.

Perma-Banned for exploit [merged]

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Maoric.6132

Maoric.6132

I’d like to add some detail to what Gaile wrote above.

It was not possible to perform this exploit with an unmodified game client. Those who performed it knew exactly what they were doing.

As a normal player of the game, you shouldn’t have to worry that you might get banned for doing something that you didn’t think was wrong. We know it’s a very serious action to ban an account, and we don’t want to take that action arbitrarily or subjectively. Our goal is to only ban when we’re sure that the account maliciously participated in the exploit, or was used for muling or distributing the proceeds.

In this case we made a mistake and banned some unrelated accounts. It was human error, and we apologize. We unbanned most of them in a batch last night. But, upon reviewing appeals, we can see that we missed some, so we’re going through and unbanning those too.

We review appeals thoroughly. Anyone who believes he or she was unfairly banned only has to write to us to get a clear answer.

~ MO

That is good to know I wouldn’t have been able to do it accidentally.

I am still curious what the exploiters wound up doing that normal people couldn’t. If this finally did away with all the teleporting resource node gatherers, I’ll be VERY happy

Maoric.6132

I hope we get some explanation.

When does something stop being ‘farming’ to be considered an exploit?

I know the answer might just be common sense but everyone has a different opinion on it.

This. There’s a small part of my brain that constantly worries I’ll be banned for something I think is normal. People in my guild craft rares to salvage for ectos or throw in the mystic forge for a precursor and I’m reluctant to do the same since two of the exploits we do know about involved those actions (mithril snowflake recipe salvage and godskull weapon precursor forging).

ANet reaction seems varied, too. The mithril snowflake exploit resulted in a bunch of bans, godskull precursors apparently didn’t. I just think that it would be nice if the information was more transparent. If an exploit is closed, I’d like to know about it so I know what types of things aren’t normal and can avoid them.

Even if an exploit is known but not yet fixed I’d want to know so I could avoid doing it and stop worrying that I’m unwittingly jeopardizing my account. I’ve spent a lot of time and money on GW1 and 2, and I do not want to wind up losing access to my accounts.

Thank you, so much.

People circumventing account termination?

Maoric.6132

On another forum I frequent there are a few people posting about having gotten refunds for the game (including showing apparent emails from support), but still being able to log into the game (showing screens of being in game and /saying the forum names of people in the thread).

Since this is basically someone playing GW2 for free (if true), is there a policy on how to report them to ArenaNet so they can look into it?

It’s possible the user is just trolling to try to get a rise out of posters, but if it’s true, ANet should take action on it so they’re not out $59.99 for no reason.

That second screen looks like it’s calling an incorrect texture and so it’s stretched to fit the area. Where on the map is that exactly? I have never seen that in the game and really want to see it for myself.

Since old post was deleted since i can’t apparently use some words (there goes freedom of speech thank you dev’s…)

Sorry, pet peeve of mine.

By freedom of speech, are you referring to the First Amendment? It says:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

ANet isn’t Congress. This is a privately owned, moderated forum. It’s governed by a code of conduct that gives moderators the ability to remove what they deem necessary to keep posting civil and to the point. You agreed to abide by it in order to post here.

Sorry to ramble on a minor part of your post, but seeing freedom of speech brought up in reference to forum post moderation bugs me.

As for the nerfing, developers have said they’re taking things into consideration and not just blanket nerfing all AoE everywhere, but will only exact changes where it’s needed. This has me cautiously optimistic that any changes will only happen in WvW/sPvP and leave PvE alone. I’ve voiced my concerns in another thread, which is all I can really do. It’s in their hands now to weigh in everyone’s concerns when making any needed changes for balance.

Question about upcoming guild changes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Maoric.6132

Maoric.6132

Aye! I was just about to post that this was a concern for my alliance as well when I realized that you are my alliance.

My guild has a group of members who are relatively busy and possibly won’t log into the game before the 28th to see any announcements regarding a server transfer, so the odds that we’d wind up with members split between servers is relatively high. There are three people right now who have already switched between two different servers, and as a leader of the guild I’m frustrated by the prospect that our existing upgrades and bonuses will no longer apply to them and that their contributions will no longer count to help further improvements for everyone. I’m also not entirely looking forward to the prospect of attempting to move everyone en masse to a new server since the favorite choice has been notoriously high/full recently and guild upgrades and vault items are a concern (in addition to the members that will likely miss the window of opportunity to move for free).

I could have sworn that I read a developer mentioning ANet was looking into something to address cross-server guild problems, but I have not seen anything recently giving a timeline, if this was still being considered, or what any potential solutions would be.

I’m curious about this as well. A number of people from our guild and our GW1 alliance’s guilds are considering changing servers, but there are a number of people who possibly won’t be able to switch prior to the 28th.

Is there some plan to make guild bonuses span across servers? It doesn’t really make sense to splinter the rewards that guilds provide if they contain people that don’t happen to all be on the same home world.

I have not read this whole thread so correct me if i’m wrong.
no one knows the exact changes to AoE being made, yet everyone is acting like these skills will be next to useless.
wait till more information comes out about it to make a final decision, until then, theorycraft and think of other builds for your class that rely less on AoE skills.

Alternatively: voice opinions and concerns over a sweeping, vast reaching change to an entire class of skills to hopefully prevent these skills from becoming next to useless.

Maoric.6132

How many of you poor, saint souls have never, ever abused AoE to do dynamic events? Are you going to all tell me “oh, this idea never once crossed my mind”? No. We all abuse AoE for events. There’s no other optimal way to play them, because AoE is crazy strong. One of the ambitions behind this game is that you should play the build you want; but at the moment, for events, you either go AoE, or are at disadvantage.

This is because if you don’t use AoE for some dynamic events, you get your face eaten off.

I rarely if ever play single-target damage heavy builds because PvE seems designed to put a person playing alone at a disadvantage. If you focus damage on one enemy at a time and are attacked by 2-3 enemies (very common in PvE and especially in events), you will likely be downed or have to run away before they’re all killed. This is why everyone “abuses” AoE, it allows them to mitigate the horrible death they would experience otherwise.

If this is countered solely by nerfing AoE, it’s only going to make the game harder to do without groups. And I don’t know about everyone else, but it seems when I’m playing, groups are incredibly hard to come by for random area PvE content.

And for people using AoE skills on single enemies, if that’s what’s on my skill bar that’s not currently in cooldown, of course I’m going to use it. If I have enemies ready to bash my face in, I’d rather hurt them than sit around waiting for a single-target skill to be ready.

Has no one mentioned this?

Every event we see hundreds of people complaining that they spent $texas in the gem store on boxes, and then get upset about not getting anything stellar.

They then ask why Arenanet keeps doing this.

Why? Because every time they do it, you go into the gem store and spend $texas.

No more $texas = no more random gambling boxes.

I’m more up in arms over doing math and realizing I’d have to spend $texas in order to even have a statistical shot of almost getting 1/4th of the only things I really care about from the event (miniatures). I’m not purchasing the boxes, just like I didn’t purchase the personalized Trick-or-Treat bags or the Consortium Chests.

I do enjoy the toy miniatures since I can get them by doing something concrete in the game, or failing that buy them directly for a known quantity of money (like you could for the Halloween miniatures, which I also bought). The Karka minis and golem/snowman/infinirarium/Foostivoos are a bit ridiculous and only reward people with deep pockets in essence.

You can repeat dungeans as many times as want, but you get cogs, stuffings and frames only once. It was said that these dungeons would be available again not the rewards will reset.

1. It was stated that people who missed one day wouldn’t lose anything. If what you said was true, people would lose sth when late for daily dungeon.
2. Minis and Outfits are there for GemStore and i best examples of things that players would buy in premium shop that don’t give them advantage over other players.
3. Doing all dung are easy, and people who bough the minis from gem store would feel cheated. They would end up with double minis which are useless as they cannot be sold.

1. I took that to mean you won’t miss the frameworks. And people won’t miss out if they miss a day in the long run for cogs. You need 1,250 cogs to get all the minis, and would have the opportunity for 1,900.
2. Or they’re for people who miss enough days that they cannot craft them all and want to get them all. It doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t all be available.
3. Caveat Emptor. I preordered the digital deluxe edition of Guild Wars 2, which has recently gone on sale for $30 less. I’m not cheated for buying early, I just got to have the game before people who waited to get the game/got it at a different retail outlet.

I too have created a post of just how displeased I am with this RNG nonsense.

RNG = FAIL

Plz sell a 4-pack of minis

More or less. Halloween has been the only event I’ve enjoyed so far on the mini front as I was able to reasonably get all of them. Farming the karka event (when I was able to) gave nothing whatsoever, and I’m not shelling out an unknown amount of money trying to get all 4 this time around. My girlfriend bought 20 boxes and got two Infinirariums. While that is 1 mini per 10 boxes on average, I’d need $60 at least with those odds assuming the game gave me at least one of each of the three for myself to keep, and all extra going towards Foostivoo. That’s a pretty insane amount to expect for minipets in my opinion.

Every pet require you to have 250 cogs, and you get only 100 in every city. So 5×100/250 = 2. You can have only 2 pets with 250 leftover glue/stuffing. Both glue and stuffing can be bought/sold on TP, so it’s less of problem…

So you can choose 2 pets from 5 to get as rewards from dung. Generally pets and city costumes are these Gem Store only items so it’s not bad.

Can’t you repeat the dungeons once he hits LA, though? That would make it possible to get every toy. Or have they said that you only get the reward a single time ever for each area’s dungeon?

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

Maoric.6132

The main thing I worry about (aside from being lost in this giant conglomerated thread) is loss of customization. The example shown on the article gives no room to change the “jewel” in Yakkington’s ring. I know there’s still a lot left unknown about ascended gear, but I just hope that people from ANet have some way to allow stat customization for them like you can achieve with crafted exotics and swapping out upgrade slots.

I also worry for people who possibly got legendary weapons and then used a transmutation stone on them to get their look onto an exotic with stats that fit their build. When legendaries are “updated” to ascended stats, what will happen to those?
