As a competitive player, I would like to see more competitive systems in GW2. Where are they?

This one game type PvP is extremely boring.

How about capture the flag?
Bomb events?
Arenas?
Two v Two?
Three v Three?
GvG’s?
A scoreboard for pugmanders if you insist on this PPT war?
Commander with most objectives taken for the week?
Commander with the most player kills for the week?
Guild with most player kills?
Guild with most objectives taken?
A jumping puzzle race with each new living world update if again you insist on the PvE (PvGate is PvE.)?

I NEED something competitive. Enough of the game polishing. A game is NEVER perfect and you can polish indefinitely.

It’s been said before, but colored commander tags are a step in the right direction, albeit a small one. Massively Multi-player Online games are defined by their massively multiplayer functionality. No one needs to point out that raids made WoW as strong as it was/is. As WvW is now the only massively multiplayer system in GW2 now that champ trains are dead (if you considered that entertainment) it saddens me to see the lack of updates/maps/content for WvW

EDIT: Spitfire ideas: Rotating 3 map system of an EB type map? Exclusive abilities in this instance? Exclusive siege? Golem vs Golem battles? Jumping puzzle races with objectives and siege? Small scale WvW map with a 20 minute timer, lower health walls/doors so that movement is faster (players feel they have “Won” something when it’s over instead of “hey it reset, time to work hard again for a week with no reward”).

I understand the focus of ANet on living story, but these types of updates are not for your hardcore players but for casual ones. Maybe that was the goal? But it seems silly to me to cater to the players of the game that log on only minimally.

It most likely has been said before, but we need more multiplayer systems. GvG’s attract a lot of players to a single instance and this would be a huge step to getting more hardcore players and keeping them. A hot-join map where 15 (or 20) players are pitted against 15 (or 20) other players seems like a lot of fun to me as a GvG/open field fighting oriented player. That way if our guild’s commander doesn’t feel like driving tonight, there is somewhere to go to get even numbered fights on a large scale.

Now back to commander tags:

Varying shapes of commander tags would be nice, but this would mostly be an aesthetic appeal when really we need functionality.

Guild commander tags seen only by guild members.

Having whatever the commander types, whether it be in /map, /team, /squad, or /say be displayed above their heads.

The ability to see other commander tags, at least on world map if nothing else, when in a squad. Although an opacity/size change of other squad commanders would be nice in the open field.

Commander chat that spans all maps so that when someone needs help in home BL they can call for it without someone having to leave the map.

BEST MATCHUP IN MONTHS! So refreshing to have something always going on.. I hate those one sided fights on the winning end NOTHING TO DO!. Love fighting FA, man can you guys fight. The queues on HoD are insane. Haven’t been able to roam in EB since we got the transfers :| Two hour queue in prime time? Nope. I’ll leave that for the achiev hunters and upscales.

The IoJ SoR CD matchup is interesting. I was expecting a blowout but CD looks to be putting up a pretty good fight. Go CD, love you guys!

I dont get all of this…are you guys mad at [Mend] because you dont like them or because they left? From what i gather from looking at it, seemed they werent all too popular but the main reason for the hate is that they left the server. A “how dare you leave us even though we hate you” kind of thing, something [Buns] knows all too well.

[Mend] is a great guild and has many likable and skilled players, I for one am happy they decided to stay on IoJ when a lot of other guilds decided it was time to leave. Major props to them for being the only transfer guild to stay the entire season, even though we were matched up in impossible to win matchups, with much higher tiered servers.

Haven’t been on much this match up but im sure theres plenty of killing and being killed by either side, it just so happens that one side is the only one forum waring over it.

I also wonder what the previous parts of that conversation was but theres no need to post it all over these forums, from what im seeing of this matchup….[Mend] was right in leaving Hod.

There are many reasons why some of us on HoD have hard feelings towards [Mend]. Those who were involved know the reasons but I’m sure everyone would just like to move on past it. This is the first time HoD has had a matchup against them since they left so it’s understandable why people are so aggressive. Please do not take this as slight to IoJ as a whole or even the entirety of the [Mend] guild as clearly they have added members from the IoJ community. This has been a great matchup and I’m sure it will be throughout the week. Lots of fun all around. CD has been great despite two matchups in a row and it’s always nice seeing new faces and new roamers about from IoJ.
Looking forward to more good fights and forum warring because who doesn’t like a good forum war and some good fights? AND STAY OUTA HoD BL YA kittenS! hahaha

Basically it’s been established that mesmer is the best class for dueling (clones, invis) and blackwater is the best build of mesmer. Combined with the current but debatable acknowledgement that conditions are (if only slightly) over powered make blackwater mesmer the most hated class-build in the game in it’s current state (for dueling).

In large scale fights they are almost useless though. Mainly used for null field, veil and (if it’s your thing [I love them] and have a small group or really organized team) portals. Although any mesmer can have those utilities so the build matters little.

Call it whatever you want. Slowed down, tanked, whatever, but every server that was about to move up did it. It’s not our servers, it’s human nature. Don’t act like your server would do anything different in the same situation because they wouldn’t. Even if your personal position would be to move up (I was of the same opinion in terms of HoD) would the rest of your server feel the same way?

Going into this week, we warned our newer wvwers that we were going up against two larger servers, and we should not expect to get first, or even second. But, we also pointed out that more people = more loot/badges, and made the goal of this week to learn more, grow stronger, and mostly have a lot of fun with all the awesome fight opportunities. I think it’s all a matter of perspective – if you go in thinking, “Oh, we’re going to get crushed, why even bother?” you’ve pretty much decided it’ll suck right from the beginning, and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I also think people forget that everyone on the bottom of bronze didn’t have a choice to tank into a more comfortable position, and that does force you to grow and work at becoming a stronger community, or your only other real option is to transfer or find a new game, because this one won’t be fun anymore. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that NSP is a stronger server at the end of leagues. I know GoM is, and speaking for myself, I’m having WAY more fun in wvw than I’ve had in a long time!

I was of a similar opinion, but again, how do you convince your server to go along with this if you’re in a position to come in first if everything remains steady or potentially move into last place if the other servers you’re close to loses rank? There was this calm before leagues started when people just didn’t want to play so as not to ruin the community they built leading up to the league. Some of the best fights I’ve had were outnumbered against the silver league teams and some of the most boring weeks have been the weeks when we were number one. There was nothing left to take and no enemy resistance to fight against, I hated it.
I just don’t like that people think that this (tanking/slow-down/ect.) is something only “that” server would do, because it’s something (as I’m sure will be revealed when next league rolls around) that all those in a position to move up in leagues will end up doing. Even if half your server wants to move up and the other half wants to stay where they are, there is a ripple effect (snowballing, ect..) that happens when your friends don’t play and the coordination is broken. The fairweathers stop coming out due to low numbers and the servers you’re fighting against get a bit of a “rally” in terms of lower enemy resistance.
In the extreme cases (as NSP saw, though I’m sure was exaggerated) there was lots of yelling and hurt feelings and the possibility that some of your more prominent guilds would transfer if you did move up, putting the other guilds in a position to choose either to move up to better competition and hurt the community or slow down to avoid the community fallout and have less fun overall to keep everyone together and move up the next tier in the following league.

EDIT: NSP did tank, and the matchup thread is still active if you’d like to see the yelling. The point spread alone in those weeks said it all. Yes by the end of the week there was no hope of staying where they were and they accepted the position (as they were number one in Bronze at the time). They tanked, but Kain lost their guilds and losing ranks faster than the people on NSP who wanted to tank, could tank. And don’t think that HoD was completely hell bent on tanking. We were facing very high ranked servers leading up the leagues and still managed to put on a show and have those higher servers praise us in the forums for our fighting spirit (again, still an active thread). It was believed at the time that Kain was trying to tank, not by all, but certainly by most on HoD and NSP who wanted to stay where they were. This only strengthened the argument for them to tank.

Sounds like someone is mad because they are losing. Look, someone is going to win Bronze league and the best bet is, it’s going to be the server with the most or near the most amount of players with the most coverage. That happens to be HoD (according to current score). Someone has to take first place and it happens to HoD (currently). If you are saying that we should have moved up in leagues then why should SF be bumped up to silver as well? The scores are almost equal and this is just the first of a two week matchup with them. Does this mean that several silver league teams should be in Bronze? NSP was supposed to be better than HoD, would you rather fight them instead?

As far as the open field tactics and fighting goes: [EXCLUDE EB ENTIRELY, we’re talking about guild groups not pug groups] SF has been the leader in point tick during prime time, they have more people during prime time so this makes sense, but it is not a question of points when we’re talking about open fighting. In the Open field, HoD is number one in Bronze. Plain and simple. If you’d like to test this statement, we have quite a number of guilds that would jump at the chance of a GvG. SF does have really coordinated groups (I don’t know how you get them all to stack so tight) but HoD has the tactics.

You’re probably right, but the fact remains that ET is only getting 1 point this week and only got one point last week. Last week, DR got to go against AR, which got them 3 points and DR is getting 3 more points for Silver finish this week. Those 2 weeks are the difference between the 15 and 11 point totals in my spreadsheet.

I see that in week 3 (later today) ET is projected to come in 3rd with kain in 2nd. If ET (being the better server at this point in time) should come in second, this would put the final scores for both ET and Kain at 13 points. This happens again in week 6 which could offset this even further. That’s assuming that the same thing that happened to ET the last two weeks (get focused because they are the biggest challenge to the dominant force in the matchup) and do come in third again despite being a better server, then yes they would end up with 11 points total.

Also, I could see the same thing happening to DR (get focused for being second best and get pushed to 3rd place for the week)

I don’t think the points accurately display of the rank or skill of the server. I know this week HoD has put the hurt on ET and as a result DR has more points overall and yet ET is a stronger server than DR.

Here is my prediction for how the rankings will shake out, along with the week by week, match by match analysis of how I got there. It’s a tough call on who will take 1st between DH and FC this week so I basically assumed FC wins this one and DH wins the next time the two meet. I’m on Darkhaven, so I was trying to stay objective.

ET will end up being ranked higher than Kain (personal opinion after three weeks of fighting Kain and then ET just before and during leagues). ET seems to have a larger playerbase and coordination.

False… NSP didn’t taked, thus the reason they moved up… They could have very well lost to GoM/AR and lose a lot of rating and let Kain stay on silver.

No, they tanked, but not hard enough, and then gave up when they saw that there was no hope in staying in down. They absolutely tried to tank. I think their matchup thread is still active with all the yelling.

I had a lot of respect for VLK before this match up. When I thought of VLK I thought of some of the best group fighters and solo roamers I had ever seen. Now I just think of zerglings who cant win a 1 v 1 even vs an EXTREMELY zerg/large group combat oriented build. I even made a mockery of some in a 2 v 1 using the same build that before was pretty much defenseless in 1 v 1’s, let alone 1 v x. I’m sure that some of the old VLK members from FC’s previous match up with HoD are still left. But the people I’m running into now extremely disappoint me.

I’m not sure what game you’re playing on but I’m sure GW2 is also a spectator sport, but I guess with HoD’s advanced superior “tactics” and “Training” you must have missed the session in scouting

We’ve posted screens in this thread and have videos on our YouTube channel of every real fight we’ve had this match-up if you’d like to see them (we’re not a bunch of narcissists who post those in a match-up thread, just for us to watch later and improve) but I’d be happy to send them to you.

I can’t help but laugh at this. Your core WvW groups can field 2 groups of 30+ on a single map and you only marginally outnumber FC? I’ve only seen FC blob in Eternal Battlegrounds and run mostly 15-20 people in borderlands, even in HoD borderlands lol. I’m sure FC has fielded more than 15-20 but that’s been the most I’ve personally seen from them when i’m on.

Commenting on something you are unaware of is like writing a review about a movie you haven’t seen. You’re on Kain and you’re talking about fights that have been had between FC and Hod. Ridiculous.

Yes we have WZ, Deth, Edge, etc. The sad reality is most other guilds add the wvw casually, meaning yeah they wvw, but they mainly PvE. Our server doesn’t have many big wvw guilds, just few clusters here and there, and then the main big ones. The problem is we don’t field those numbers like HoD in terms of a single guild, but we make up by small groups of guilds running alongside. Another problem is if we have Guild X running its group and Guild X leaves the scene, that cuts our numbers really low and bam we are now outnumbered, meanwhile VLK and such can field multiple numbers and be in multiple borderlands.

False. If VLK is in two maps at once then that means we have no commander on and what you are seeing small roaming groups (3-7 players). If we are on the same map, we’ll average 15-25 and on rare occasions 30. FC has guilds that size. To say that you don’t is a complete lie.

WvW guild commanders are and always will be a magnetic for fair weathers. Any groups with multiple VLK tags that contains more than 25 players is fair weather bloated. You can believe that statement or not, but it’s the truth. Maybe you’re just bad at counting?

Again, you’re getting away from the point I’m trying to make. We separate ourselves and coordinate with each other when both HoD and our competitor have the same map qued to be in two places at once. Am I to understand that you are saying you only have one guild that has someone with a commander tag?

I seriously hope that you’re not naive enough to believe that HoD is the ONLY server that does this or the ONLY server in this match-up to do this? I can’t speak for FC but Kaineng has had to work together to be even marginally relevant (which we aren’t) but my point is, Kaineng also works in collaboration. Commanders working together for a common purpose. Though the purpose may not benefit the server as a whole, the point is, their actions are united and in this process, they are learning how to effectively command as many of the more experienced commanders have left.

I’m not saying that HoD is not coordinated like you say, but to blatantly put that you’re server is superior in tactics and skill is just ludicrous. Sure HoD’s success can be attributed to the additional training and coordination, but everyone knows that in order to tick 400+ppt on reset and one other night, there is a big population difference. No one denies that your fairwethers have come out to play because of the stomping you’re putting on, but even without them, you would’ve outnumbered Kaineng and FC by more than marginal numbers.

Refer back 2 weeks ago, KN/HoD/DR, that was a close match and Kaineng had about twice as much people then than we do now (HoD still outnumbered us, no queues on any map on reset then or now). Are you saying that 2 weeks ago when there was no achievements to get, your fairweathers still came to play even though HoD got 2nd? If your numbers from 2 weeks ago have not inflated or deflated, you’d vastly outnumber us with or without the PvE fairweathers coming in for achievements.

Again, I don’t want to discredit your server’s hard work, but don’t assume that no other server did anything while you guys “trained”.

No, I am not saying that HoD is only one to do this, but the discussion today has been focused on the movements of the groups that are in WvW.
Our CORE guilds are not grouping together, but talking to each other while in the same map to have two groups of 30+ players instead of one with 60-70. This way we can hit two places at once while the enemy has to run back and forth trying to be in two places at once as is the nature of having only one commander in the map or even two but both playing their own game regardless of what the other commander is doing and not coordinating assaults to hit two keeps not just at once, but to start at the same time. In addition, running in when things get hairy to provide coordinated flanking while still remaining two independent groups even inside the same keep.
There have been both wins and losses with this tactic but the general opinion is that this is a winning strategy.

I understand you are from Kain and you have not seen these tactics being used against you because, not to insult you, you don’t have the numbers to be a serious threat (something I am sad to see as no one likes to see this happen to server). It is not my intention to insult you, as I sympathize with you in outnumbered fight.

I am not saying that HoD doesn’t outnumber both of our competitors, but when both of us have our core groups in a single map establishing equal numbers (I understand that this has happened on a only a few occasions during this match) that HoD’s coordination has been stellar.

I hate this talk as it, by its very nature, makes me seem narcissistic. It was not my intention to belittle any guild or server, but I don’t like the sole attribution of HoD’s success to go to our numbers when our actual WvW players have worked so hard to grow and learn to be where we are today.
