Please return to Split PVE & PVP Skill Design

Arena Net,

I’m very aware that you implemented the pve/pvp skill split later in Guilds Wars Life, that said, in my opinion it was the most brilliant fix to an issue which still plagues TONS of other MMORPG’s today.

So many MMO’s still try to balance skills & make them viable for both PVE & PVP play. The problem is while players behaviors change and they can adjust to different settings quickly(read PVP), most NPC’s in games do not change the way they play unless the game developer changes them. Working for hours to find a build that works in a particular PVE situation, then being blindsided by a change to a skill because that skill was over or under powered in PVP is not fun and is maddening at best. Perfectly good & cohesive PVE builds are already being ruined because you are changing skills in regards to PVP.

I know I can’t read the minds of the developers & there may have been great reasons to change some of the skills in PVE but trying to keep skills aligned for two completely different styles of play (ie… pvp & pve) is an exercise in player frustration every time you change them. Many games have for years now frustrated PVE only players by changing perfectly viable PVE builds because of PVP. You had the perfect solution in implementing the split in Guild Wars, please continue to use it.

For those who aren’t sure what I’m referring to about split skills here is an example . As you can see looking through the list of Elementalist skills from Guild Wars, some are marked as PVP. While both the PVE & PVP versions shared the same names, icons and animations, they function quite differently in PVP than they do in PVE. This allowed Arena Net to tweak the skills based on one style of play that would be vastly different from the other style of game play.

tldr: please consider bringing back split skills into your design, it’s frustrating to have a viable build broken for either pve or pvp because you needed to change a skill for either a pvp or pve only issue.

[edit]typo’s fixed & provided a link to an example of a split skill[/edit]

I want unique trade-able items like in Guild Wars. In Guild Wars it was so much fun to open your character and see you had a present waiting wondering what you were going to get. Getting items you could trade, or being able to purchase them off other players was so much fun. Between the tonics and the Mini’s it was a whole mini-game in and of itself.

Look at all the options we had back then. Each gift held the prospect of getting either white, purple, green or gold mini’s during most years, or tonics for the sixth year. Why can’t we have something this fun again?

Hello,

I’m a mother, housewife & I’m also a guild leader of a great guild with lot’s of fun & friendly folks in it. I’ve also been disabled for quite some time now, the disability makes it extremely difficult for me walk or stand more than a few moments at a time. Due to my disability it’s very difficult for me to leave the house and I rarely do except to see my doctors. Since I’ve become disabled my husband and I have discovered a shared love of gaming. We began our foray into online gaming about a year after launch of Guild Wars and we loved it immensely, and had been very much anticipating the launch of GW2 since it was announced.

Yesterday was our 8th wedding anniversary. Since it’s difficult for me to leave the house, my husband surprised me with a day off from work (as well as with a few other nice surprises ). So I decided to take the day off from being guild leader. This means I didn’t log into mumble, where I pretty much hang out during the day, though I may be AFK sometimes and not actually playing the game.

Anyway we spent the day exploring Blazeridge Steppes discovering all the little nooks and crannies in the zone, we even did both the puzzles. And well it was just an amazing way to have a sense of exploring and wandering for somebody who can no longer do those things with the person she loves. I really want to say thank you to Arena Net for making such a wonderful world for me to explore and delve into and while it will never be the same as the hiking we used to enjoy so much, you have made it completely possible for me to forget about those things I can’t do any more for at least a little while because your world is so expansive, immersive and beautiful.

So thank you very much and keep up the good work

What would you want out of your "end-game" experience

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrsAngelD.6971

MrsAngelD.6971

I want my endgame to be what Anet is going to give me, more stuff to explore. I have never been a fan of

“Oh let me run this instance over and over again so I can get gear to run this other instance over & over again”

I want to explore, craft a bit, hang out with friends and make my characters look good with things I find or work for around Tyria.

imho “Endgame” is a horrible concept which should have never been put into MMORPGS the whole point of these types of games is that there is no end because you’re always seeking the next adventure, making the next great discovery and exploring the world.

So my endgame will be exactly what Anet will do, which is adding more content for me to experience while hanging out with friends.

Thank you A-Net. (not all of us are displeased)

Guilds Need TLC (Quality of Life)

Posted by: MrsAngelD.6971

MrsAngelD.6971

As a guild leader since head start there are some real glaring quality of life issues that seriously need to be looked at for guilds. I was pretty disappointed to hear in the recent stream that guilds weren’t really being worked on at the moment. I understand Guild halls take time and I’m willing to wait for that but some of these things really need to be looked at.

Guild Bank

  • Guild Bank funds(gold) should have separate permissions from than the guild bank items.
  • Deep cave needs permissions there is no way to set permissions for deep cave currently.

Guild Message of the Day

  • The Guild Message of the day should be shown to you when you log on, as it stands right now I still have members who are surprised to realize we even have a message of the day.
  • If the Guild Message of the Day is updated it should be shown to all members who are currently logged in.
  • When using the edit button in the Guild Message of the Day, it is not actually an edit feature when you have to constantly retype the entire message every time you need to change it.

User activity/communication

  • If a member logs in visible & representing it should let you know they have come on line, also it should tell the guild when they log off.
  • When you join a guild you should be notified that you need to click represent to interact with the guild, earn influence for the guild, & receive active buffs from the guild.
  • Add a "last time logged in: or “Activity” column to the roster so we can keep track of inactive members.
  • Show guild members on map (different color / icon if they are not in your party) or allow larger party’s for PvE world events. (not dungeons / wvw)
  • Option to appear offline to guilds you are not representing. (i.e. I’m on an alt that is in another guild, but don’t want to be visible to guild of my main.)
  • Alliance Chat and/or Custom Chat channels, currently there is no real way for Alliance guilds to chat in game with each other this can make coordinating events together very difficult.
  • Officer Chat
  • Allow Guild Leaders to send announcement type mails to guild members, allow more characters per email currently I am constantly hitting the email message suppression when trying to send mails to multiple guild members

PVE/PVP Splits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrsAngelD.6971

MrsAngelD.6971

There is no question TO ME that splits are bad and that they will lead to poor mechanics. So many people here go out of their way to differentiate PvP from PvE (and vice versa), leaving devs to either ignore it completely (that’s how GW2 started) or drive a wedge between the two. With each split, you’re going to see an increase in 1) game imbalance and 2) stupid mechanics. I only need cite World of Warcraft. I’m sorry, but the imbalance in that game is absurd and has never even been remotely addressed and the mechanics (I mean really, the cata boss fights? seriously?) are dumb. If you’re gonna split, create two different games. Otherwise, keep it one and let skill be the primary differentiator (is that a word?).

There I fixed that for you,

Splitting skills is not a bad thing, it does not creat game imbalance, in fact it makes both playstyles easier to balance because PVE & PVP are already two different games. Arena Net Split skills in GW and they still update and change both PVE & PVP skills as needed even as recent as September

Maybe you didn’t play Guild Wars, but PVP was it’s own game, and PVE was it’s own and that’s just as it should be, because mobs never react the same way a human player does. Already classes have suffered in PVE in GW2 because of nerfs that were made which were aimed at PVP play. Right now they say Mesmers are Over powered in PVP well I can tell you that simply isn’t the case in PVE. Solo Leveling a mesmer is difficult and frustrating. Splitting the skills and adjusting them for the type of game play they are aimed at would GREATLY help in the mesmer situation.

WOW probably could have saved itself a lot of headache had they adopted arena’s net’s skill split long ago, imho.

Why I feel guild representation is not a good idea

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MrsAngelD.6971

MrsAngelD.6971

I have a guild and I disagree with you. We have 54 members in our guild and some of them are in multiple guilds. Some of them were people we knew from other games. They are way more into PVP then I and my Other Guild Leader are, so they joined a PVP heavy Guild on another Server. When guesting is implemented they will come do PVE on our server and represent us while doing so.

Some people have friends who have guilds of their own whether they are friends in real life or friends from other games, those friends may not be on all the time. Being in both guilds allows them to join their friends when they are around and then have other people to run/play with when they are not. Multi-guilding gives them this.

My guild began in GW2 with 4 people, that means we’ve added 50 since launch and we’re picky, we have them fill out an application and we don’t even make them full members of the guild right away.

Being locked to one guild doesn’t mean automatic loyalty. I wonder if maybe you just aren’t being picky enough about the people you invite to your guild since you obviously have some guidelines you want people to follow when they join.

I would advise letting people know your guidelines when recruiting and making sure you explain your “rules” clearly when people join. Sometimes people won’t join, but the ones that will are likely the ones you’ll want in your guild anyway.

My guild left me for another game. :/

PVE/PVP Splits

Mammoth, the fastest solo fow was ~52 minutes.

I agree with MrsangelD. Content cannot stay difficult for all players forever, it’s a really bad point you’re trying to make with this whole “not nerfing pve skills will make content a joke”. The more time players spend doing the content, the more likely they’re to discover or think of ways to complete it easily and efficiently (see: gw1 speed clears).

A split was in no way responsible for what you seem to think was so bad in GW1. If skills needed to be nerfed in regards to PvE, they were. This works both ways. How would you feel if core skills were nerfed in PvP because it was being abused in PvE? I imagine tears.

Balancing classes for PvE/PvP by splitting them stops either one from being hurt by the other. It’s not the splits fault gw1 PvE ended up like it did, it’s anets lack of care to nerf what needed to be nerfed i.e. shadow form, energy surge, sliver armour, whirling etc etc etc.

Sorry which premise or conclusion that I posted are you disagreeing with?

He is disagreeing with the same thing I am. The skill split has nothing to do with what you perceive as being unbalanced the only thing it does is keep skill changes that are made for one style of play from affecting another style of play.

PvE is non existant in this game anyway.

You cant even farm in this game because of DR.

People play this game for the WvW not the pve, they will never beat wow’s pve, ever.

So because you can’t farm and you can’t figure out what to do with yourself at level 80 PVE is non existent? Give me a break.

The building itself is pretty run down, I see ranger pets running around that I have tamed on my Norn Ranger, there are a few ghosts I cant speak with and if I run all the way to the back where the Eye is (where all the statues & stuff are in GW) There’s a ghost I speak with to get my HOM skins.

What’s the point of creating a group for non-dungeon things? Grouping does not change the mechanics in any way except that you see those faces on top left corner and blue dots on minimap. We are all automatically part of one large group where ever we are. You are grouped with everyone you see.

There is no tagging or shared objectives or anything like that like in other games. You won’t get credit from kills or loot even if you are grouped if you do not attack the mob and if you attack the mob, it does not matter if you are grouped with others or not

One point would be so you & your friends can keep track of each others locations while running around together.

In GW2 I find myself just deleting them. The amount of space they take up in the bank is insane when only I would be the person using them. I really don’t mind buying black lion keys and I would still continue to do so even if tonic’s weren’t account bound. • Problem: No Way to Mass message guild members attempting to message them individually you run into the in game email message suppression. Also with this in place the character amount allowed in emails is severely limited.
  • Proposed Solution: Make one the of the guild buffs you can purchase with influence, give the guild leaders the ability to send guild wide emails.
  • Propsed Solution part 2: The limit on the amount of characters allowed in an in game email is very limited with the message suppression in place you should relax the amount characters allowed in emails.

New Mechanics which aren’t in the game in any form:

  • An item that allows you to capture a skin into it. For example you have a steamblade, you use that item on it and you get a “steamblade skin” which you can then trade/use/gift/etc . This is slightly different than transmute stone as you do not need the destination item.
  • fishing in the game
  • Plastic surgery (for gems) allow revamp of characters face / hair choices.
  • Personal log of recently encountered skills, items, enemies, areas etc. Similar to the help window in Guild Wars. This log should be clickable & allow you to view the item in the wiki, the wiki should open in game instead of alt-tabbing you out of the game.
  • Custom Chat Channels (ie allow users to create custom chat channels with an optional password for access).
  • Ability to dye hair & Also lipstick
  • Armor “decay” in terms of looks only – scratches, blood splatter etc
  • A Minipet management button where you select the minipet from your collection that you wish to have active, instead of having to carry your minipet with you in your inventory.
  • Guild Recruiting bulletin board – Allow guilds to post an advertisement on the board while allowing users to browse the guilds & apply to join them. For an extra fee allow guilds to higher a town crier who will advertise their guild to passersby.
  • more skills per weapon (ie, let us learn different skills to choose from for our weapons) *Controversial

Portal skills from mesmer is a great skill, but, if a group use it at once, they become over powered, and yes it is a nice strategy.

My suggestion for this overpowered strategy is that, only people not in combat can use portal. That is all.

Thanks.

The whole point of the portal is to allow the mesmer & friends to end up behind you and catch you off guard. The whole point to a mesmers existence is to use it’s skills to be befuddle, confuse and generally just cause you to go “WTH Just Happened”.

WvW:

  • Queue for all 4 WvW areas.
  • Show what battleground I am queued for when queued for only one.
  • Show Queue time. both how long I have been queued and estimate.
  • Ability to see WvW score when in overflow.
  • overflow wvw. Since on many servers at night wvw is full for everyone, why not have an overflow instance. That instance would only happen if all 3 sides are full, buildings would not be upgradable and state of the map would not count toward server points.
  • Join from overflow < Most common complaint around Also seems quicker to join WvW from portal rather than queuing via menu
  • The ability to donate for upgrades instead of having one person purchase the entire thing. A bar can appear showing how much has been donated before completion of the upgrade. Essentially allows pooling of resources by the entire team, instead of one person investing more heavily than everyone else.
  • Make the ammunition for siege weapons 1 supply, i.e if you fire the trebuchet then it costs 1 supply and will keep costing supply until you run out or someone resupplies you, this way people can’t spam theses powerful weapons. *Controversial

PvP:

  • Capture the Flag map
  • Queuing as a group for both PvP and WvW
  • Dueling
  • 2v2, 3v3 Arenas
  • Smaller Scale mass combat. 15v15, 25v25 mini campaigns to support WvW
  • Remove downed state from SPvP. *Controversial

Mail/Trading/Community:

  • Auto complete mail to name from guild / friend list added
  • Ability to report gold seller from mail without having to open a bug and screenshot added
  • Remember last person you sent mail to.
  • COD (Cash on Delivery)
  • Notification ! When item sells at trading post.
  • Allow buying and selling of quantities larger than 250
  • Looking for group – Currently very weak implementation, add system so i can say I’m wanting to be in a group for x event, y dungeon, z pvp, make it easy to see who is available via a pool of players. E.G. i want to be questing along with specific flags saying what I’m interested in doing. Currently seems to only work with friends?!?
  • Separate the friend notifications (ie JaneDoe.3232 has come online) from the game messages in chat options.
  • Include a way to go straight back to your transactions if you click on one that you are buying/selling and it searches for them.
  • Increased resolution for text in the trading post
  • Right clicking names in chat won’t show a menu sometimes
  • Preview items from Trading Post.
  • Ability to send more stacks in the mail
  • Player to player trading in person. *Controversial

Crafting:

  • Craft directly from bank inventory added
  • Remember collection tab’s settings. i.e. keep food tab collapsed.
  • Karma vendors for various trophys (small fangs etc) or ways to upgrade / downgrade a surplus of one line to another. i.e. salvage Fangs to Small Fangs to Tiny Fangs.
  • Allow salvage on all items. Especially Heart vendor items that are bought with karma.
  • Mystic Forge: All Items Bind on Equip, or at worst Bind to Account. No need to make equipment I cant even use or trade.
  • Fix bug that makes “craft all” only work with 3 digit numbers. (ie hitting craft all when you have 1200 ore, only does 200 and not 1200)
  • Provide additional inventory slots in the bank for crafted ingredients/components

I’m by no means a hardcore player that said some time in the next week or so I’ll have logged 1000 hours (I’m disabled and can’t walk very well so I have a lot of time to spend). I only have one level 80 and she’s sitting at only 83% map completion. A huge portion of my time is spent just chatting with people or wandering around Tyria. I’m always finding either new events, places or puzzles I hadn’t seen before. GW2 is an amazing game and I’m looking forward to enjoying it for many years to come.

Guilds

  • Guild Bank funds(gold) should have separate permissions from than the guild bank items.
  • The Guild Message of the day should be shown to you when you log on
  • If the Guild Message of the Day is updated it should be shown to all members
  • If a member logs in visible it should let you know they have come on line, also it should tell the guild when you log off.
  • When you join a guild you should be notified that you need to click represent to interact with the guild and earn influence for the guild.
  • Alliance Chat and/or Custom Chat channels
  • Officer Chat
  • Allow Guild Leaders to send announcement type mails to guild members

Class:

  • General Class requests
    * Better rewards for support (ie, rezzing, setting up combo fields, killing smaller monsters)
    * Bind-able weapon swapping button for all professions (greyed out or unavailable while in combat for the respective professions who do not have weapon swapping.)
    * One alternate build slot to allow a PvE and a WvW build.
  • Necromancer:
    * Display pet life
    * Pet Control: Ability to call off pets
  • Ranger:
    * Pet Names do not stay.
    * Pet AI needs improvement, they run ahead and aggro mobs.
    * Full Control over your pet Skills *controversial

Graphics:

  • A way to see through the nuclear overkill of spell effects for melee (we can’t see when to dodge or our characters in big groups). Let alone see the tiny red circle lines. Bloom effect is rather overkill in some places, i do like the style used but an option to tone it down would be really appreciated without effecting other nice shaders as it just makes the game ‘foggy’.

Misc:

  • Physics – Running off an edge should have momentum not make you stick straight to the floor below you Similarly movement while in the air is very floaty and jerky if you try to move/stop moving

Frustrations over lack of endgame

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

How are you people reading up on Guild Wars 2 before buying it and suddenly being shocked when you find out that the game is exactly like ANet said it was be? If you were keeping on on the game’s development, if you were reading what ANet was saying for the past 3 years, you should have known that what you’re looking for is completely absent from GW2. “The Endgame Reimaged” was just an amalgam of information that ArenaNet has been giving us about the game’s content since it was announced.

So why didn’t you know this stuff? Why did you buy this game thinking that the “endgame” was going to be like every other MMO out there? Why didn’t know know that the combat gets rid of the trinity? How do you not know that traits and a chosen build aren’t the only determining factor on how good a player is, that they avoided those “cookie-cutter” layouts you look for in party members in WoW on purpose because a person’s build doesn’t determine how good they are at the game? And for that matter, how did you not know that this game is more skill-based than gear-based or spec-based?

I’m pretty sure you lied about “scouring the web for a glimpse of this game’s content for the last 2 years”, because if you did, you wouldn’t be surpirsed upon learning that this game is exactly what ANet said it would be.

This is pretty much what I was gonna say

The option to turn tooltips off for skills on the skillbar

Guild Wars gave you the option to hide tooltips for skills on your skill bars. It’s a nice option because after a while if you know what your skills do you no longer need to read the descriptions all the time any more. Plus some of the tooltips are pretty big and take up a lot of screen space.

Can we please have this option in GW2 as well

Thank you,
Angel

Please return to Split PVE & PVP Skill Design

Why? I like how it is now. It feels more flexible and less restricted. Why would you want PvP abilities?

Did you play Guild Wars? The split skill system was the saving grace of pve. Take Aura of Restoration it had a pve & pvp version. The pve version would have been way overpowered in PvP and the pvp version would be worthless in pve. Splitting the skill allowed them to tweak it for each style of game play instead of trying to make the skill viable in both.

Pve & pvp are two completely different play styles. Humans can quickly react and adjust to a situation where as a.i. mobs will only change their play styles if game developers change them to do so. It makes sense to split them because they really are different games, at least in my opinion.
