So I’ve owned Guild Wars 2 since it was in beta, but I never really got a chance to play it very much until now. Over the time I’ve managed to level most professions to 30, and others to level 20 at the least.
But I can’t decide which one to ‘main’. Help me out?
I’d like a class that has a lot of build choices. E.G, they’re able to build for condition damage, or for burst damage, or for support, etc etc. Lots of weapon choice and neat/interesting abilities is also something that would be nice.
Armor preferences: Either Heavy or Light armor. Medium armors are sort of ugly to me.
I also enjoy doing PvP and PvE an equal amount.
I also enjoy melee and ranged combat both equally.
Note: I DO NOT CARE AT ALL ABOUT WHAT IS ‘OVER POWERED’ AND WHAT IS NOT!
So please don’t say something like “Lul Warrior are OP > all. Go war”.
Really, my preference is always the iconic ‘mage’ class in video games. Magic rocks.
That would be elementalist in GW2, but… I hate stance dancing. I hate it. I don’t enjoy it at all. And honestly, I just find elementalists sort of boring for some odd reason.
Thief – Fun. I enjoyed thieves a lot, there’s not really anything I didn’t like about them other than the fact they aren’t a magic-theme class. That sort of bugs me a lot.
Guardian – Neat. I guess I’m neutral about them, I never really found much out about them. Nothing amazing, nothing bad. They do seem a little over-popularized, though.
Mesmer – Fun. I liked these a lot too. Although I felt like they sort of lacked build versatility. I always did a lot of research on the classes, and it seemed like the only real viable build for Mesmers was ‘Shatter-combo build’, which is probably the most boring thing to ever exist. It was also a little annoying how a lot of their utility skills seemed entirely directed towards PvP, and most were rarely useful in PvE. And of course, their lack of build versatility/half of the skills only being useful in PvP just eventually made the class become relatively boring.
Necromancer – Alright. Nice build versatility, interesting/fun utility skills and traits, lots of weapon choice. All good. Except for I despise death-themed things. It’s gross. :[
Of course, don’t go cross this off the ‘suggestions’ list just for that reason, though.
Engineer – Nope. Cool theme, but they are just stance-dancers again essentially. Dislike.
Warrior – Awesome. I can see why they are so popular. But no thanks, warriors are just not for me.
Ranger – Neat. They’re cool, but I really dislike micro-managing pets, or the whole pet reliance thing in general. I must prefer to have pets that are sort of disposable, or not pet at all.
Elementalist – Nope. for reasons I already said.
So what class do you suggest? Thanks if you read this.

It’s just you…
Really unnecessary to have such a massive, massive wall of text.
I play on Crystal Desert too and there’s loads of people everywhere, always people for events in every zone, lots of people in WvW. Maybe you’re just logging on at too bizarre times ?
Disagree. Honestly, the way GW2 has it set up so far is totally on the ball.
I’ll call it the grill-to-skin ratio.
Light armor classes have the most revealing armor. They’re supposed to be at the back, not up in anyone’s grill, and they can definitely get away with showing skin.
Medium armor classes, I’ll allow it too. Arguably, thieves operate in grill territory, but… Whatever. I don’t like it that much, but I can live with it.
But, heavy armor? Definitely not. I’ve been really pleased with the fact that GW2 has no metal bikinis, and judging by the armors of GW1, we aren’t going to get any. But seriously, anyone suggesting that warrior or guardian women should be getting up in enemy grills with an exposed midriff/cleavage window/etc is insane. I don’t care if it’s a “fantasy universe”, you can only suspend your disbelief so far, and armor is meant to be protective. Those skin zones just scream “stab me!”. May as well be going into combat naked.
What about people that would like their charr/norn characters to be like a barbarian or something ?
Only if males get more revealing armor.
Don’t listen to these kids, It’s probably just the server you’re on. Transfers are free so find a new one.
I’m on Crystal Desert, and also leveling a new character. There’s loads of people for every event (always easily 5-10, and if there’s nobody around 100% guarantee they will come if you simply ask in map chat). Lots of people in cities still, too.
Honestly on Crystal Desert (and I’m sure a lot of other servers) It’s exactly as it was on release, albeit the population is more spread instead of everyone being in low level zones, and WvW queues don’t take 5 hours.
I’m rerolling Ranger right now.
Love it.
@All the people crying that everyone hates this game.
…Well you clearly don’t hate it if you’re still playing it and posting on the forums.
Morons….
Hmm these suggestions have helped a lot. I think maybe I am leaning towards a Thief or Ranger, i leveled a ranger to 30 in beta and had a blast with it, and I’ve been trying out Thief the past week or so and those are a lot of fun too.
@Mandar I liked your post, and i love the idea of a high damage long bow build… But is there any other high-direct damage builds for rangers? Things that aren’t based around condition… Like Greatsword?
Also, is it possible to build so your pet is capable of being an actual threat?
My experience with pet classes in MMORPG games is the pets are just there to run around and slap things like a wet noodle, without being very useful at all. I’d really like a pet that can put some hurt down, and isn’t there just ‘because’.Maybe you missed the part about Berserker and Longbow and the details (I did edit and add a lot maybe since you first read, so maybe reread and sorry in advance for the novel). Put it this way….on a good night WvW, in say 2-3 hours, I will get 30-50 badges and 150-200 kills. Granted, on those nights, I always try to party up because that always increases badges. Bottom line, a berserker ranger with a shortbow/longbow and a warhorn toggled in/out real fast when you can spare the time…does INSANE damage. Best part is you get to do it at a comfortable distance…most of the time. Thieves are the tough spot, and I usually like to move around a lot and randomly dodge when I suspect one is stealthed nearby.
As far as pets, I tend to choose tanky pets just because they stay alive longer and server at least as a distraction (brown bear, blue moa are my favs because they also have condition removal and 33% defense). Honestly, I am probably not the best person to speak on how to best use pets as anything more than a distraction or a quick buff, as I am often too busy focusing on my target than my pet.
I think you misread mine, but i guess i phrased it poorly.
I meant to ask, is there anything other than short bow/longbow that is actually capable of “insane” damage?

…Is there a reason why everything else is inferior ?
Hey, so I love Gw2 and have owned the game since it was in beta. But I’ve only began to truly play it now.
so my problem is that I’m having huge issues with picking a ‘main’, in WoW i had dozens of characters and most of them at max level… but i hate having multiple characters, I’d like to stick to just one.
So far I’ve leveled each profession to level 20 at least, but with Elementalist/Mesmer being 35, so i could get a feel for each profession.
But I still can’t choose !
I’d really like a profession that has good weapon choices, a lot of unique utility skills, and, well, the ability to deal a large amount of damage quickly.
I enjoyed Ele/Mesmer but their lack of weapon choices made it become fairly boring to me.
I generally prefer to be a caster of some sort, but i also enjoy being a kind of active, athletic type archer/melee. After playing Mesmer to 35, I’ve also found I love the stealth in this game, even if it’s something small like stealthing you at low health, I like it a lot.
And last of all I love being able to do combos on my own, something I hated about Mesmers was their major lack of combo fields and combo finishers without allies.
I enjoy having access to a lot of good armors too, I’m talking lots of nicearmors to transmogrify.
TL;DR: What is a profession that has burst, stealth/invisiblity, a lot of choice/customization, maybe some way to support their allies (even if it’s very small), and is self-reliant.
Thanks a lot if you help me out with some suggestions !
P.S: I really don’t care what is ‘over powered’ and what is not.

That’s what it looks like with max settings.
Crafting is what you should do. I just reached level 13 with an alt of mine who is an elementalist, and i gained 3 whole levels just by leveling my crafting from 10-13 with materials i gathered while leveling from 1-10, and now i have some great items currently and for the future.
The Beavs agrees.
There are ‘Combo Field’ and ‘Combo finisher’.
Combo fields start it, and a combo finisher ends it.
An easy and good example is a flame wall, if say an elementalist uses a flame wall, engineers, rangers or anybody using guns/bows can shoot through (projectile finisher) the flame wall to cause their bullets to catch on fire, causing burning.
There’s lots of different combos out there, i don’t know them all, though.
Some examples:
Shooting through a ‘light’ field will cure conditions on allies.
Using a ‘blast finisher’ in a air combo field will give swiftness to allies.
There’s a whole lot of combos in the game, some people have yet to discover?

Engineer and Elementalist by far have the highest skill-cap. Elementalists are easy to pick up, but probably the hardest to master.
So I’ve been seeing everybody say “Kitteny” lately for some reason. What’s it mean?
Uh… I’ve had no problems whatsoever. One or two restarts daily at about 12am pst, but that’s all they are… just restarts. Like five seconds of not playing? Who would complain about that? Idiotic spoiled brats, i guess.
From what i remember Diablo 3 launch involved error 33 or something, only about 100 people were actually able to play it on launch, after about 3 hours of error 33, it all went offline for another 3 hours or something. But all Blizzard launches are horrible.
GW2 launch has been incredibly smooth.

LFG didn’t kill WoW community, it was a big part of it though.
I remember the days, where people would talk in general chat trying to form groups for Zul’Farrak or something in WoW, most of the time by the end of that instance those people would be friends, since the instances were challenging, fun, and lasted a good 2-4+ hours.
Heck, i am still good friends with people i met in WoW from about 6 years ago, i know them better than some real life friends, and i met them just from asking to join a group for Maraudon while questing in Tanaris.
Actually it was incredibly easy to make friends in WoW back then, but then the game began catering to casual players (which was not a bad thing, but they removed essentially all challenge from the game), followed by LFG. LFG was great at first, people talked, did the instance, and went on their way.
But after about a month… people no longer cared about the randoms in their group. They would not care how they treated them as they will simply never see that player again once the instance was over, eventually people just stopped talking to each other all together, these days in WoW it’s honestly incredibly, incredibly rare to even have somebody say something as simple as “Hello” in an instance group.
And what is the point of saying ‘Hello’ in WoW anymore? You’ll never see these people again, and the content is so easy there is no coordination needed, so why bother? I’d really hate for that to happen to GW2.
Maybe if it was server only, to just make finding groups a little easier? (Which isn’t actually as hard as you guys make it sound…)

My first character, and highest level is a male charr mesmer.
I guess people that want to by a dress-wearing-purple butterfly-magic person generally don’t like being big, mean, war beasts.
Or people that generally like being big mean beasties don’t like being flimsy purple butterflies.
…I like both.
Hmm my ranger’s pet names don’t reset, ever.
Have you tried just changing the pets completely, then slotting them back in and renaming?
…You’re gorgeous.
Your post reminds me a lot of Vanilla/BC WoW…
This is a good thing, and I hope it doesn’t change.
