Buy it off the TP.

I got my first precursor from the forge, and bought my second. Buying is the better bet, even with the inflated prices.

Is this person accurate? Can you actually get a legendary by tossing in exotics? Or does he mean precursor?

He means precursor, and his post isn’t accurate even then. There’s a one in five chance of getting an exotic out of four (level 80) rares. So if you can get 5 rares for the price of one exotic (which is typically true), the rares are better.

I got my precursor after throwing something like 900 shortbows into the forge. And that’s at or below the average number of tries, from the posts I’ve seen.

I’m just going to straight up buy The Legend now, though. Second time around it’s not worth kitten into the toilet.

Mine’s finished and on the trading post for 1699 gold. Because since Anet added the unicorns to the Dreamer’s animation, I just don’t like it anymore.

Luckily once it sells I can purchase all the mats to make a Bifrost straight up and still have gold left over. Of course I’ll have to farm Arah a bit, but it won’t be too bad.

EDIT: Pics or it didn’t happen. Now buy it so I can make a cooler legendary.

This was kind of a poor way to bomb the precursor market. Anet could have just sent a chest in the mail to anyone who did lost shores stuff at any point during the weekend. That would have been a lot better IMO. The way they did it some people missed out and some ran 2-3 times with alts.

Next time just do like the end Halloween thing where you show up any time during a 24 hour window and get your chest with rewards. One time per account only, though.

Oh and please no more RNG giveaways on extremely valuable items. Instead of precursors for the lucky ones, just give everyone reasonably valuable items. Like the 20 slot bags, those were nice.

Because I bought a game advertised as an MMO without grinding for stats, and now I find that was a complete fabrication.

And it’s not a slippery slope fallacy by the way. Anet confirmed they intend to add ascended armor and weapons in too. Have fun with your exotics fighting people with noticeably higher stats and damage. I’m sure you won’t feel any pressure at all to grind for ascended gear.

Q: What will make GW2 even better?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nephele.5063

Nephele.5063

-Removal of ascended gear and the agony mechanic.
-Addition of more PvE dungeons like fractal where you can keep increasing the difficulty. This idea is pretty solid as it allows for the hardcore crowd to see the same content as everyone else while still feeling challenged.
-PvE balance is pretty out of whack. Not sure about PvP as I only do PvE and WvW. Certain classes have to work much harder for less DPS, Rangers are kinda awful, etc.
-More PvP modes. More WvW objectives. Without the orbs WvW feels pretty bland.
-Put in some armor that has different styles. Medium armor especially feels like the same set has been slightly modified and copied 10 times.

ya but then you’d just be grinding for that “set of gear upgrades” where would you get those so called “upgrades” unless you want them to be free and not have any effort into getting them. Would you like some lobster tail also?

You totally missed the point. The operative parts of my post were the lines about not working in the mists (won’t screw WvW for the people who don’t want to grind PvE) and not gating the new instance (gating mechanisms are terrible, every other MMO learned this and stopped doing them).

The way it’s in now, if you want to remain max stat in WvW, you go grind the new instance. You want to get farther in the new instance, you grind the new instance. See the problem?

Because they could have very easily just added a set of gear upgrades that didn’t work in the mists and didn’t serve as a gating mechanism to artificially slow players’ progression through the new instance. But instead we get gear grind. Just like every other MMO.

Learn from mistakes, gating mechanisms are bad.

What’s insulting is Anet resorted to this flawed cop out when it would have taken them all of 15 minutes to come up with a system that wasn’t a gating mechanism and didn’t affect WvW.

Here, I’ll suggest one right now. Just put an infusion slot on chest, legs, shoulders, and helm armor. All exotic armor of those types gets an infusion slot. Now put infusions of masterwork, rare, and epic quality in the “end game” PvE content, and give some lore reason why they don’t work in the mists. Boom, you have PvE only progression that doesn’t bother WvW players and isn’t a terrible gating mechanism.

EDIT: The infusions would add bonuses like health regen, increased run speed, increased boon duration, etc.

Having straight up better stats on them is total crap though. Thanks for making me grind your “end-game” dungeon so I can have top stats for WvW. I’m so glad this new and exciting mechanic made its way to GW2.

True Power creep is NEEDING a certain base stat to even do something in a game. Sure, it will be way harder to wear blue grade gear at level 80 and do a dungeon or two in this game, but it can be done. That can’t be said for other games.

No it’s not. Power creep is any increase in power over time in a game. If your maxed character is better than your maxed character from 6 months ago, that’s power creep. The “you don’t need it” argument is flawed, because the same could be said of any game. Yeah, you don’t need the latest gear to beat someone else in PvP, but it sure does help. And that’s what power creep does, adds constant imbalance between players that grind the gear and ones that don’t.

I’d like some actual info on this. If it’s just some jewelry we put on to kill stuff in the new dungeon better, then whatever. It’ll be lame but at least we can ignore it if we choose.

If it’s actually better than exotic gear in other areas of the game (I’m looking at WvW) then Anet just trashed all that stuff they said about GW2 being different. Gear wise, I see no difference between this and a new raid tier in WoW. Well, except if the new gear includes weapons and armor that means I have to go buy trans stones on top of grinding the new gear. So in that way it’s kinda worse.

Is it too much to ask for an MMO to just leave the power creep out? Before this I could at least take a break for a few months and not have to worry about grinding new gear when I come back. Now it’s just WoW all over again. “Hey, you’re back! Now go run dungeons for 3 weeks and we’ll let you raid with us!”

This is getting to be ridiculous. Going on 2 and a half days I’ve been falsely banned without any response. The least Anet could do is admit on the forums that they screwed up and are working to make bot detection more accurate in the future. Continuing to issue bans when they must know there’s a problem is completely unprofessional, and not admitting their mistake is insulting to paying customers.

Come on Anet. We know you’re reversing a lot of bans. Therefore we know a lot of unjustified bans were made. Own up to it like adults, and fix the problem. I’m sorry I invested so much time into this game now, and I’m extremely sorry I bought the digital deluxe. If this is how Anet is going to act, I can find another game to spend my money on.

This system is causing more trouble than helping. They should roll back the bans and just do it right.

Yep. I got unfairly banned trying to farm out the last ~100g for my legendary. Now it’s Saturday so I probably won’t get my account back until Monday. I had a 90g buy order on the TP too, so I get to sit here and wonder if it got deleted when they suspended my account.

So from my standpoint, the bots running around in Cursed Shore are a whole lot less of an issue than Anet’s anti-botting code. The bots just decrease the cost of mats, Anet closes my account indefinitely until support checks it out.

I’m not saying bots are good or anything, but I am saying the anti-botting code is bad. It’s causing legit players more grief than the bots themselves. I’m sure people have simply quit after seeing the message that their account was locked, thinking they couldn’t get it back. That’s much worse than bots farming Cursed Shore, in my opinion.

I dont exactly like it, but it is a great way to get more people to buy gems for more bank/bag/character slots. More people buying gems = possibly more money for anet and even lower gem prices in gold.

You’ve got it backwards. If Anet makes gems more desireable, then more people trade gold for gems and the price goes up. Everything Anet adds to the gem store helps increase the price of gems.

I’d be fine with them restricting you to only one or two stacks on the TP at a time. Right now you can place tons of stacks up for sale and leave them there, essentially giving you the ability to store infinite amounts of a good so long as you set it up for sale immediately. Placing a limit on this forces players to actually mule all the items they want to save up, and will cut down on the millions of items up for sale at prices too high to have a chance at selling anytime soon. Just look at candy corn.

It’s fine, if you set your items up for a reasonable price, they sell. If you set your item prices too high, they don’t. Even if I get undercut I find that within 24 hours most things are gone. The only exception is when the price is steadily dropping, but then I’d be screwed with your system as well, because more people are selling than buying.

Read the ecto thread. Basically the Anet employee in charge monitoring the in-game economy said they wanted to increase the demand for some of the less useful items. So people decided T6 mats fell into this category and now we’re riding a bubble.

Thief, elementalist, and guardian would be my picks for strongest three in dungeons. I don’t really know why people love warriors so much. They are a nice profession, sure, but the three I mention all have more tricks to speed the run along.

My thief is unbelievably useful in dungeons, and thief shortbow is at least as strong a weapon as warrior greatsword. You can spam blast finishers all day, with strong AoE damage. Ele supplies a lot of combo fields and can support well, and guardians are just nice in general.

Well, when I played that unnamed MMO that starts with a W, the last class I played in PvE was rogue. The exact buttons I hit to DPS were as follows: press 2 a couple times, press R if bleed is about to end otherwise press X. If the boss is about to AoE, press 3. If the cooldown is up, press side mouse button to make the next attack 100% crit. When you need to do a little more DPS for a few seconds, press shift E twice to enter stealth and use an opener (I had a macro).

Someone tell me how that’s more engaging than GW2 combat. Because I don’t see how it is.

EDIT: Oh and you know what playing a healer in 5-mans means? Press 2. Over and over. And over. Because once you outgear the content, there’s no reason working for loot when you can mash one button and get the same results.

in Dynamic Events

Nephele.5063

It’s not clear what we (group of some 6 to 8 players) are doing wrong. Several waves of risen spawn at several points along the way, we kill them as quickly as possible, and then the mission fails.

The event chain is designed for 50+ players. It’s pretty much impossible with less than 30, no matter how organized they are.

Yet another Temple of Balthazar event attempt that ended in failure and rage...

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Nephele.5063

Nephele.5063

The difficulty doesn’t bother me as much as the die and run back zerg mentality of the whole event. It’s very clearly designed in such a way that players will die, and will die often enough that if they don’t run back quickly the event will fail. This is poor encounter design, since the biggest factors in the difficulty of the encounter are how far away the waypoint is and how many players run back instead of lay around dead.

Change the whole thing to lock out players from re-entering the event once it starts, and reduce the damage to reasonable levels.

What was GW1 Halloween like?

in Halloween Event

Posted by: Nephele.5063

Nephele.5063

Well first off all the Halloween items dropped off all the mobs in the game so you could just farm whatever you liked and get all the goodies you wanted.

Second, you didn’t fight the Mad King, and he wasn’t as cartoonishly evil as he is in GW2. He showed up, told bad jokes, and played Mad King Says with everyone in Lion’s Arch. Only in the GW1 version if you didn’t do what he said, he straight up killed you. Then ressed you a couple seconds later, cause as I said earlier he was more crazy than evil. The encounter was more about watching other people fail and having a good time.

No more farmable holiday events, please.

in Halloween Event

Posted by: Nephele.5063

Nephele.5063

I feel that the Mad King encounter has become much more about loot than fun. You can chain run it all day and get chest rewards. It has turned into a farming chore. Yes, there’s the “just do something else if you don’t like it” argument, but why would I farm somewhere else when I can get cash shop items and rare skins from the Mad King?

I believe the event would have been much more fun if the drops from each chest were increased, but players were only given 5 keys to the chest each day they logged on while the event was active. That would allow a player to run the encounter as much as they want, but limit farming the chest to five runs at a time. That way doing a special holiday event doesn’t feel like farming Cursed Shore.

33% does not mean you get clovers every 3rd try. It means each individual try has a 33% chance of giving you clovers. Statistically the chances of getting 12 straight failures is around 0.8%, so you’re just in the very unlucky category.

I can confirm that clovers indeed have a decently high drop rate, as I’m three for three at forging clovers.

The Plinx Dilemma

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Nephele.5063

Nephele.5063

You’re overestimating the degree to which plinx beats other karma farms. I’ve reached “plinx numbers” running with a small group and killing all the veteran priests in straits of devastation. Works best in off hours, but on my server everyone’s usually in cursed shore anyway. Plinx is popular because you can stand there and spam a couple skills for easy rewards, and all the events are squeezed into a nice line for you.

I think the real problem is all events of the same level give the same karma/gold/exp rewards. I could spend 30 minutes killing claw of jormag, or 30 seconds tagging a champ in orr for the same reward. Scale up the big events to give more karma (oh and fix the mob HP so it’s not waves and waves of stuff dying instantly) and we should see people disperse to new areas.

Karma DR - Hitting it if I do 1 event every 15 minutes

in Dynamic Events

Changing areas, even changing zones, does not work to stop the DR on karma. A couple days ago I farmed Cursed Shore until DR started to kick in, then swapped to Straits of Devastation. I was immediately on DR.

I think the DR penalty is more stiff if you chain run a single DE, however it doesn’t seem to matter how much you change your route, the game does not want you to farm karma quickly.

A Thoughful Thread for Precursor Weapons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nephele.5063

Nephele.5063

Precursors are definitely my least favorite design choice in GW2. I see what Anet tried to do with them. They are a nearly infinite sink for otherwise useless rares and exotics that would otherwise drive the value of weapons (and crafting materials) down. However the all or nothing approach is terrible.

We’ve already been down this road in other games. If you can find an example of an MMO where the players enjoyed having the best items tied to RNG luck, please tell me. It’s hard not to be bitter when you try 40 or more times to get an item then someone gets it on their first run.

I propose simply changing the mystic forge gambling to award shards, splinters, or whatever which can be used to craft a legendary precursor. The pieces would be a fairly common (30% or so) drop, with more pieces awarded based on the rarity and level of the items used in the forge. Acquire a certain number of pieces, toss them into the forge with some mystic coins and junk, then you have a precursor. Or buy them on the TP if you want. Letting people trade them would stabilize the price of the base weapons already on the TP.
