@AuldWolf, now you’re just being childish.

I think I read the line “poop rainbows” like 6 times. Very unoriginal.

And as Dust said, they do not wish anything into existence. That is not how magic works within the game. They actually do use some mechanics, but maybe you just don’t pay attention to anything lore-related about races that aren’t your beloved Charr.

And while it’s cute you think my favorite race is the Asura, that would be incorrect.
It’s actually the Sylvari, and they eventually will outsmart your kitty cats too. :p

@AuldWolf, the deus ex machina thing is a really bad argument. We are comparing the intellect of two IMAGINARY races. Two races of people who DO NOT EXIST. In a FANTASY game. Who cares if the Charr’s technology is actually real? It doesn’t matter, when it comes to intelligence, the Asura know just as much if not more than the Charr.

It’s not even really a popularity contest, I’m pretty sure Humans are still the most popular, followed by Sylvari.

TL;DR: You’re being incredibly close minded.

Also the Harry Potter/Stephen Hawking comment was cute, but is Harry Potter for knowing how to use magic? No. Is dumbledore smarter than Hawking for knowing kitten near everything about magic? Possibly. ;p

With how you argue, I’d suggest this post is nothing but comparing Tony the Tiger to a Mogwai after he’s gotten wet.

If the voice wasn’t feminine sounding, what would be the point in even playing a female Charr?

The voice and their overall size is the only thing that is actually different between a male and female Charr.

Well, I guess the females do look more like actual cats too, but that’s besides the point.

I see a lot of Asura bashing going on in this thread.

However, I haven’t seen anything relating to the fact that Asura technology is not only magical in nature; which seems to be the entire argument to why Charr would be apparently smarter, because an Asura’s technology is magical.

Magically powered? Yes. But clearly, the devices the Asura create, such as Golems, Waypoints, Gates, and pretty much everything else clearly has real working mechanics for it to even function. Take golems for example, one of the first heart quests you do in Metrica province has you fixing Golems by messing with various inter-workings of their machinery; however, if you were to do this as any race but the Asura; including the Charr, it seems like insanity and you resort to “Pushing a big button and hoping for the best”.

There also appears to be a vast and complicated inter-working to the understanding of magic in general; something only the Asura seem to get. This is pure intellect. The argument of Charr being smarter because they use real physical materials to make their creations doesn’t work if the Asura are just as knowledgeable about magic as the Charr are about steel.

The ability to create things is only one part of intellect, but it’s basically the only thing most people here are scaling the intellect of the two races on.

The Asura are far more experimental in their designs, a sign of higher intellect. Where; as mentioned, a Charr generally has a problem, and solves it with an invention. This is a single-minded, yet logical way of thinking.

An Asura on the other hand would try many different prototypes and methods to solve the problem, improve them, and then end up creating a couple dozen inventions that solve multiple problems they didn’t even make the device for in the first place.

This isn’t to say the Asura are by any means efficient; far from it. As mentioned by others, they are terribly conflicted among themselves. So yes, the Charr are clearly a more organized and efficient race; but are they more intelligent? I have a hard time saying they are.

Asura still excel over them in various signs of intellect, regardless of many of their inventions being flops. They simply have more of an imagination, they understand their craft better than a Charr understands his, and appear to be much better at learning and retaining information.

New to Ranger, needing help

OTGBionicArm.2417

I just made a Ranger character.

Now for some backround I mained Ranger for the entirety of my time playing GW1 (I played that game since it’s initial release) and in GW2 I mained a Guardian. This character will be a testament to my time in GW1.

These new Ranger pets are so weird compared to GW1, they actually have stats and skills and such, and so my question is; what pets should I be using?

Currently I have been enjoying using an axe/warhorn combo and a greatsword for melee engagements. I like to be mobile and I like to focus on my pets ability to fight.

Can someone suggest some good pet types that work well with this playstyle?

I’d like to thank everyone for answering me, but I have to remind everyone that the intention of even playing a Warrior is for PvE dungeons for me.

The “pansy thief” thing is a joke. I realize they destroy things in PvP. But can they face-tank? No. That’s my problem. I hate being squishy. I like being able to plant myself there and not die.

@Schwahrheit, I’m intending to use the character for PvE, so I’ve been testing things out in PvP before hand to get a feel for it. My problem stems from what I’ve determined is just their passive healing having poor scaling. Other threads seem to think it’s bad or non-existent. My second problem is that their defensive cooldowns are too long of a cooldown for the shortness of the actual effect.

I feel like they are inherently designed to “live long enough to burst someone with 100B” and nothing more.

Hate it more and more with a fiery passion.

I main a level 80 Guardian. Maybe I’m biased. Who knows.

But it sure seems to me like transitioning from Guardian to Warrior is trading in all of your boons, defensive abilities and ability to live long enough to even DPS is traded for more health, and very short defensive abilities that on a year long cooldown.

I don’t feel like a “kitten tank” or “brutal warrior”. I feel like a pansy thief that’s tried to wear metal armor and bigger weapons in hopes it defends him better. It doesn’t.

The only way I’ve figured to even feel remotely durable is to spec everything into defense and vitality, use a mace and shield and make shouts heal myself. Lemme tell you, that is booooooooooooooooring. It’s also still no where near as good as a Guardian who can do the same thing, be kitten near unkillable with a hammer and have 4 times the DPS.

Maybe I’m just doing it wrong. Maybe I want it to be what it isn’t; a Guardian.

I don’t know. Can anyone suggest anything that would help me with this? Something I can change to get more of a “Durable DPS” feel out of a Warrior that ISN’T boring? Because currently it feels like being durable makes them do crappy damage, unlike the Guardian.

Give the Engineer Access to Maces/Hammers

My proposal for Engineer Mace and Hammer:

Mace (Main Hand Weapon): Engineers’ maces are fitted with an electrical discharging system, and are designed to weaken and stun the target.

1: Technical Strike, smash your foe.
> Electrified Strike, attack again, with a charge of lightning on your mace, causing vulnerability.
> Crack of Lightning, deliver a powerful under-handed strike that zaps your foe, leaving them weakened.

2: Astonish, you unleash a distracting light from your mace, and then strike your foe in the head, stunning them.

3: Haywire, your mace goes on the fritz, and starts to periodically zap nearby foes over the next few seconds.

Hammer (Two Handed Weapon): The Engineers’ hammer it custom-built with a rocket propelled hammer-head to explode and burn foes, as well as a magnetism manipulator. Though, occasionally it misfires. The hammer focuses on area of affect damage and control.

1: Amplified Strike, you strike your foes with your hammer.
> Charged Strike, your hammer begins to glow as you strike again, charging it for the next attack.
> Exploding Hammer, your hammer ignites as you smash your foe, setting them on fire.

2: Uh oh!, Your hammer has a mishap and rockets you through the air to a target location, damaging nearby foes as you crash.

3: Magnetic Sweep, you shove your hammer into the ground and send out a magnetic wave that pulls all foes in its range towards you.

4: Swirling Rocket, your hammer blasts off, however, you hang on as tightly as you can causing you to spin out of control, damaging nearby enemies and burning them.

5: Surge, you channel your hammer into the ground, and unleash a massive magnetic surge that launches nearby foes into the air.

Many people say: Hammer is not something an engineer would use.
Have you ever thought of a charr engineer swinging and bashing around on a big warmachine? Hammer fits the engineer perfectly!

Exactly, and to further justify the concept for people who don’t think Engineers mesh with hammers, I have provided a few examples of “Engineer-like” characters sporting hammers, as well as an “Engineer-like” example of a hammer we all know and love.

Pictured:

Jayce – League of Legends; His mercury hammer transforms into a cannon, he is obviously a very skilled Engineer!

Alec Mason – Red Faction: Guerrilla; His hammer has some kind of force amplification if I recall correctly, hence why he can use it to topple buildings with ease.

The Gravity Hammer – Halo; Obvious choice, it’s the freakin grav-ham. You all can’t deny it would be freakin awesome to have something similar for a Engineer. ;p

Hammer, I can definitely go for. Mace is a maybe, don’t really see any reason a engineer would be running around with it since you can’t fit a whole lotta gadgets in those tiny things.
Expiremental list of skills for hammer:
1. Hammer swing/knee breaker(short scripple)/Explosive strike-strike that detonates hammer head(Aoe damage)
2. Elixer coated strike- Strike foe with elixer coated hammer causing poison, confusion, or blind.
3. Explosive hammer- Throw small hammer that explodes into a smoky cloud, blinding nearby
4. Electrical Thrust- Thrust charged hammer(1/4-1/2 stun) at foe/Heavy Blow-knock back target
5. Magnetic Pulse- Smash ground causing magnetic pulses, nearby are pulled in (more damage for more pulled/3-5 enemy limit) and then knocked back.

This guy gets it, nice imagination, Lord.

And I think a mace or a hammer would go greatly along with the Engineer Asthetic, people are just looking too much into how they look for OTHER classes

lol….as u don’t understand why some of us dislike hammers or mace or just another weapon with melee function because we say "No, I don’t want it, it doesn’t fit in with my worldview " , at the same time we should not understand 10 ppls opening 10 different thread with the same subject:have an hammer or a mace.

We should say " go make a warrior or a guardian" ,but we don’t….because we are making a DISCUSSION.
If you don’t understand the point of view of someone else, just ask…and…….discuss!

I like the idea of a totally wrench redesing , in skills and also in his look.
But,add a new kit as melee kit,or add a weapon that basically is another melee,it’s something that would make me depressed.
I’d prefer have some useful / dedicated long range kit or weapon. We have enough of a melee in our class.

I too wish there was a longer range weapon set. (Rifle is too Shotgun for me).

But I’m saying strictly lorewise, a Mace atleast, would make sense for them. I mean, they don’t even use Pistols or Rifles in a conventional fashion, (Shooting electricity, poison darts, and glue out of pistols, or using a Rifle to power jump 900 feet) So why would they use a mace like everyone else?

My problem is, I want a melee weapon on my Engineer; the Wrench looks cool, but it isn’t effective as a true melee weapon.

Now I mained Engineer all the way to 80. I love the Engineer.
One thing really bothers me though; I have no true ability to be engaged in melee combat. I refuse to count the Wrench, because that kit is so jumbled, you don’t really feel like you’re using the Wrench, you feel like you’re throwing random junk at the enemy, with interludes of Wrench-thwacking, that doesn’t even do much because the Wrench has no stats of it’s own, which makes it a pretty terrible DPS option in PVE.

Lorewise, my suggestion makes sense. Engineers clearly have to build things, things that probably involve some sort of hammer or similar tool to create. And it would be cool to put a Engineer/Gadget twist to the mace main hand, or two handed hammer. Make the Hammer Rocket-Powered or something, smashing someone with it causes burning, or perhaps you can use it to jettison towards your enemy at high speeds. As for the mace, perhaps it could be an electrically charged tool-hammer, adept at stunning or blinding enemies, which along with the already existing shield, would turn the Engineer into a front-line CC machine.

Tell me what you think everyone, I know I’m not the only one that wants more “real” weapons for the Engineer!

I developed a similar back story for my warrior as the OP—kind of a cross between magical bionics and a magical version of Iron Man. But I also think that the Asura animations take some of the pressure off of us to come up with an elaborate, lore-appropriate justification. Weapons such as Great Sword and Hammer look crazy heavy when my Asura warrior swings them around. I love how she has to hurl herself up into the air with each swing of a thousand blades, and how she teeters around afterward while carrying the great sword. The animations make it look like she doesn’t have superhuman (err…. super-Asuran) strength, just a hell of a lot of determination.

This is exactly what I’m talking about.

Asura Warrior Justification :p

in Asura

Posted by: OTGBionicArm.2417

OTGBionicArm.2417

I made an asura warrior but relegated myself to a rifle in RP situations before deleting him.

Though, we see the peace keepers carrying hammers and swords. I doubt they would compare with warriors of the bigger races. So I see no problem justifying putting them in the same league. personally though, i wouldn’t try so hard to make yours the equal of a Norn warrior. I’d tone it down maybe to a tonic or something that increased my physical characteristics making me utilize my game given acrobatics to stay on par. Also, keep in mind that Asura weopons are alot smaller than Norn so that needs no justification. In the case of feats like the hammer, I might go with an augmented weopon over Norn-strength but that’s just my flavor. My two cents.

Norn was just the example I used. I assume Charr are equally strong, and Humans are also capable of great feats of strength. I don’t know about Sylvari.

But basically, I like it being over-the-top, but the Asura as a whole, are over the top.

Asura Warrior Justification :p

in Asura

Posted by: OTGBionicArm.2417

OTGBionicArm.2417

I’ve been looking to make a new Asura Warrior, and I’ve been thinking of ways to justify to my friend that they would make fine Warriors. (He argues that their physical stature and small size automatically disqualifies their viability in being Warriors.)

In doing so I’ve developed many personality quirks and and tons of backstory for my new character.

His name is Irkk, of the self-created “Bionics Krewe”, (Yes, I like Bionics, and the Asura could totally do it, just not with the traditional mechanics, obviously, this is magical Asura Technology we’re talking about!) which is dedicated to inventing ways to improve the Asura body via “bio-magical-machinery”.

He has had many strides to improving his physical strength and acrobatic abilities. With use of his internal bio-magical-engineering, he is capable of feats of strength only shown by the Norn, such as effortlessly swinging a greatsword, one handed, or being able to create shock waves by smashing into the ground with a hammer. He also able to defy gravity for mere seconds by activating a magnetic reversal system within himself to create the stunning animation behind Hundred Blades, or Flurry.

I realize this is all a stretch, but is anything REALLY a stretch with the Asura?

They are responsible for the technology that allows you to instantly port to somewhere on the other side of the world- at a cost of course. Asura Technology can explain pretty much everything in the game, if you really want it to, like some of the more comical events like floating jellyfishes, (Clearly, the Asura are patenting this obnoxiously deadly weapon because NO ONE expects a flying land-jelly to sting them. Element of Surprise, OP.) or the fact that weapons shrink when an Asura sheathes it. This, clearly is magical Asura weapon diminishing technology to save space.

All in all, this is a post for anyone who had doubts of playing an Asura Warrior seriously. I have given you everything you need to give a new twist to your tiny armored terrors.

I’m gonna go enjoy my Yoda-esque Bio-Magical-Engineered Masterpiece now. But what does everything of this prospect? Let me know!

I see your frustration as I main an Asura, and then I made a human alt character and even that made my perception of jumping for vistas insanely bad. Asura also jump just as well as any race, but as mentioned before the chracter model size screws with your perception. For me it’s like “My Asura SHOULDNT be able to make that” but the game gives it to me anyway because jump height is the same.

Also on a side note, from experience, most Vistas actually require very little skill in jumping. Just don’t try to “Skyrim/Oblivion jump” up the side of a steep cliff. Just circle around to find an easier route. 9/10 times the vistas all have a very easy path that you find after you tore your hair out in frustration trying the “hard, unworking” route.
