Blackgate, you can’t have your garrison back. Kitten you.
I’ll take an SS in 15 minutes for you
is that ss from the outside looking in?
Still waiting on that SS. Why’d you delete your post, bro?

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. I guess I should have clarified that I am pretty much only into Wv3. The idea of a valkyrie + P/T/V mixture and S/D seems pretty interesting to me. I know that my thief won’t be as good at it as a tank warrior/guardian (trust me I know, I have a p/t/v 80 warrior, I am just a medium armor + mobility guy over tank and spank + heavy armor)
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
I have had my thief parked for a while because I’ve never been a huge fan of the glass cannon builds. I kind of want to start playing him again, but was wondering if there are any true tanky builds out there that DON’T revolve around condition damage?
I’m talking power/toughness/vitality most likely, and being able to stay within melee range (probably sword/dagger, maybe sword/pistol?) To me it seems like D/D is built around C&D + backstab, or condition builds w/ death blossom. Is there any way to build a thief out like this (large-ish health pool, good sustained damage, high toughness, less focus on gimmicky burst)?
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
Make a second character. Join a different order. Purchase the piece of armor/weapon that you want. Purchase a white level 5 weapon/armor. Transmute said order piece onto white piece, and put it in your bank. Take out the item on your other character, and transmute whatever stats you want over it, and enjoy.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
I’ve seen you in the starter zones doing your thing. +1 for outstanding citizenship. SoR has some great people.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
I am currently building my engineer around it. He’s only 20 right now, but I have every intent of staying TANKCAT and hitting 80 with pure melee engineer goodness.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
TANKCAT is a lot of fun! It’s on this first page here, if you can’t click and look at that, my goodness, you’re out of luck.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
I personally went human, as I like the way they look in medium armor the best. The racial abilities really are a non-factor in all fairness.
That being said, Charr are clearly the most terrifying looking choice and if I hadn’t picked human, that would be my only other choice.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
I am sure this topic has been brought up countless times before, and some people have had success in some shape or form with building a “melee” engineer – but hear me out!
I love what the TANKCAT build brings to the table. It successfully puts you in melee range without you getting burned down in a matter of seconds. What I DON’T like, is that the only way to actually “melee” is the toolkit. The potential for the engineer to be a really well balanced class would be to simply add a melee weapon to their arsenal.
It of course couldn’t be a sword/greatsword or anything like that – but I could certainly see either a dagger, mace, or hammer. There is absolutely no reason that an ENGINEER, that BUILDS and FIXES things wouldn’t be able to use a hammer, or a mace. And really, who can’t use a dagger? It seems to fit the ‘tinkerer’ archetype that ANet is trying to produce with the engineer to begin with.
None of these choices would make the engineer overpowered, and it might even draw more people away from cookie cutter grenade spam builds, which are NOT very fun (in my personal opinion.)
Adding these weapons would allow engineer to stay within melee range at all times if that is how the player wanted to build their character, which makes sense as we are the only non-heavy armored class that has access to a shield. To me it seems like a no-brainer to give us the choice to stay in melee range.
The dagger would be focused around quick, light strikes to inflict some bleeds, coupled with the shield offhand to help keep us up. The mace would be light control and just overall melee, again coupled with the shield. The hammer would be our only true all out offensive melee build, built with power/control in mind just like warriors and guardians utilize them.
I do realize that we have countless weapon kits and abilities to help accentuate our current very limited melee capabilities, but realistically adding one or more of these additional melee options doesn’t seem very far fetched to me.
Feel free to weigh in, as I’d like to see everybody’s stance on this.
@ArenaNet – are there future plans to add additional weapons to each class for more options on how to play?
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
Totally off topic-but can thieves execute/do a finisher under stealth? If so, I think doing one should unveil you.
Yes, they can, just as a mesmer can, and a elementalist can in mist form, engineer with that shrink elixer, etc.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
Listen, stealth IS the main feature of a thief. If you were to take that away from them, they are just a really weak warrior with tiny little swords. Would you like your clones taken away from you? Grenade spam? Hundred blades? You see what I am saying here? Every class has their signature moves/mechanics, and though you might not like or agree with them, that doesn’t mean ANet should hold your hand and remove it from the game.
Assassins from GW1 (which the thief is based on btw) did not have stealth and were very good at at taking out players. Additionally, I don’t see how adding stealth to the assassin adds to the strategic depth or complexity of the class. I vote that Anet forgets that they ever created the thief and just bring back the assassin.
Because change is bad, right? Good thing that ANet isn’t a democracy that takes its votes from users.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
These people complaining would have never survived in real PvP/PK environments like UO.
I’m kinda doubting you were in UO long.
Too bad that I played pre-UO:Renaissance and continued playing for 5 years. Red and hung out at Buc’s Den, and intentionally griefed whiney players like in this thread.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
if you notice them again, let us know what the full guild name is, as well as a description of the character if it’s the right PiNK guild. there was some debate over whether TC should start employing spies since the higher tier servers are using them, and the general consensus was that if we need to sink that low to win, we’d rather not win. we’d at least keep our dignity that way. we’ll punch you in the mouth. we’ll stab you in the back. but we’re not going to pretend to be on your side while we do it.
Good man. TC seems to be a good community server – this is what I like to see.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
I’ve lost track. Mind summarizing all your valid points as to why perma-stealth is a fair and legit class mechanic?
I haven’t stated that perma-stealth is a great mechanic at all. And this thread has seemed to steer away from the perma-stealth discussion altogether and become a ‘complain about stealth’ as a whole thread.
Stealth is a legit class mechanic, that is all there is to it. I personally feel as though there should be a limit to what amount of time you can spend in stealth before getting a debuff that prevents it for an amount of time – lets say 30 seconds tops stealth – I think that would be fair.
Stealth gives thieves the element of surprise, and people don’t like that. But, that is how the class was built, and how ANet intended for it to be played.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
Can’t wait to fight Yak’s and TC again. What a fun match up this is going to be!
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
Nah, I started typing my post before you posted. A few posts accused TC of zerging during tonights defence, which would’ve been tricky seeing were were in total defence most of tonight trying spread what little forces we had between objectives (Until an hour or two ago we were perpetually “undermanned”)
Oh okay, great. For what its worth, I have enjoyed all of the scuffles I have been in, regardless of whether or not there is a TC zerg. The core CD players can put up a fight no matter what kind of numbers the opposition brings!
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
Initiative is one of your arguments? So, because we as a class have a LIMITED RESOURCE that we have to work within, when ALL OTHER CLASSES can spam their moves anytime they are off cooldown, that is a good feature for us? Come on.
Something wrong here…
How so? That’s how all the classes work. It isn’t like initiate magically replenishes itself – it takes time to come back. We can’t help the thieves that spam heartseeker over and over – they make us look bad sure.
Not all of us are backstab/glass canon builds either. I run a toughness/condition build and I don’t abuse stealth. Stop with sweeping generalizations everybody!
I guess I’ll explain.
Initiative and Cooldowns are basically the same thing, just a different skin. Don’t act like one is vastly inferior to the other.
And to cover the bold part, there is no spamming skills while they are off cooldown. Cooldowns are initiative. If our skills are off cooldown, we can use a bunch at once. If a thief has full initiative, he can use a bunch at once. Same thing.
Also, my Ele will accept perma-mist form, my Guardian will accept perma-aegis, and my ranger will continue to suck in the meantime to keep things balanced.
^
I’d like to have perma-Death Shroud for my necro and limitless number of illusions for my mesmer.Again, this is when you don’t understand the mechanics. If we hit you, it breaks stealth. Mist form can’t attack anyone. Perma-aegis would be bad because you can then hit and never be hurt. Death shroud permanence would be unfair because of the massive health pool and additional damage. More illusions for the mesmer would be unfair because there would be no way to counter it. You guys are really reaching here.
Understand it, once again. THIEVES CAN’T DO DAMAGE WHILE PERMANENTLY STEALTHED, OR IT BREAKS THEIR STEALTH.
Sarcasm. It’s an art. Apparently, a tough one at that.
No, I understand that it is sarcasm, so don’t try to chastise me. I am simply stating that none of you have any real arguments that hold any value right now other than “that’s not fair I want that too!” If you want stealth, give me grenade spam, heavy armor, clones, etc.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]

“a bunch” being either 3-4 heartseekers (bad thieves spam this), one cloak and dagger, or maybe two death blossoms. Its not like we can spam the skills over and over. By the time you make it through your full rotation, we have made it through our initiative moves. The difference is that while as long as your skill isn’t on cooldown, you can use it – but if we don’t have the initiative because we chose a different skill in a situational sense, we can’t use it.

Did someone say “retaking all the map from the TC zerg?” – what zerg? – Might I direct you to this screenshot of today’s valiant defence of Stonemist keep:
Yes, you’re not imagining things, that’s the “undermanned” buff on my bar. There were literally no more than 12 of us (And we recalled ALL our forces to the keep), quite possibly less, vs what must’ve been at least 40 CD attackers (it was enough that the walls were carpeted end to end in ele and necro AoE). Look at that screenshot then look me in the eye and tell me that we’re were zerging – it’s physically impossible, we didn’t have enough in the zone to make a zerg :p
I hope you aren’t referring to my post – because if you are I am implore you, please reread it.

confirmed us the placement in CD of TC spies ^^([Pink] players with their guild tag… on our side suspected !!!).
I’m not in Pink, so I can’t say whether there was or not, but are you sure it was the same guild? There are guilds on other servers with the [Pink] tag, but they are different guilds. We ran into one such guild last week vs. SoR I know. Not sure if there are others on CD.
I am fairly certain I saw [PiNK] players yesterday too, but as you said there is no way to guarantee it was the same guild, because I didn’t click on them to read it.

Funny to see people compare grenade spam with permanent invisibility. Really?
I am not comparing to it, please reread my statements and see that I stated it is a class specific ability/signature ability.
How can you possibly think PERMANENT invisibility should be a class specific signature? It outclasses every other “signature” you mention by miles.
What exactly is the thief achieving while being permanently stealthed? Again, I am not stating that I agree with the mechanic, and I have previously stated that I think that the culling issue makes it much worse. However, permanent stealth was real in WoW and it worked perfectly fine. I think there is an influx of soft players that don’t like having to actively pay attention to their game and are surprised when PVP gets in the way of their door fighting.
These people complaining would have never survived in real PvP/PK environments like UO.

Never played WoW, never will.
Seems like thieves having too many so called “main features”: Initiative, Steal and Stealth. Aren’t we fancy? And there’s no other class who can do its main thing endlessly.
Oh, and about “really weak warrior with tiny little swords” part. Really weak warrior with 10k damage per hit, yay.
Initiative is one of your arguments? So, because we as a class have a LIMITED RESOURCE that we have to work within, when ALL OTHER CLASSES can spam their moves anytime they are off cooldown, that is a good feature for us? Come on.
Steal is on a 45 second cooldown. Unless you are stealing from a necro and using fear, it is fairly useless – its just another shadowstep/gap closer – just like a guardian’s judgement etc.
Stealth is our main feature, yes. And to argue about the ‘10k damage per hit’ part – you are ignorant. ONLY GLASS CANON BUILDS THAT WILL DIE WHEN FOCUS FIRED can do this. If you take away stealth, THERE IS NO BACKSTAB. So then we have a ton of little 600ish damage hits with our daggers. What would you like to do to buff us then? Because I would wager that no matter what us thieves get, the community will find a way to complain.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
I am guessing all of you hated rogues in World of Warcraft too, didn’t you?

That being said, the culling issues in the game right now certainly are making this a bigger deal. How about you calm down, put your pitch forks away, and wait until the November 15th fix.
Despite the fact that he remains invisible, he isn’t really doing anything worthwhile. If your whole team is stupid enough to sit on that spot and do nothing else, it appears to me that the thief has a working tactic and has outsmarted you. Leave 2-3 people there and the rest move on, come on guys. It isn’t that hard.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
Never had any problem since they fixed this weeks ago.
If you are talking about the rendering of player characters, or CULLING, it hasn’t been fixed. It will be fixed in the Nov. 15th patch.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
I am failing to see the issue of the zerg when our small 7-8 man squad quietly took back our garrison, and the rest of the CD BL. Sure, every once in a while there are overwhelming numbers of TC players – but I can tell you this; both servers are FULL servers, which would imply that they have the same amount of population.
If we in CD are being outnumbered on a map, it is either because;
A.) our troops are in a different map
B.) we are not organized and forming groups to take objectives
C.) we are failing to garner the populations interest in Wv3
I get that we are losing, and by a large margin – but as far as I am concerned the number means nothing. Every time TC takes something, we fight for it and take it back.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
Now this ofcourse doesn’t look like 50 guys because the screenshot doesn’t show the rest of the group behind me (due to me already being dead), but this is the mid day zerg around 3pm rolling through the CD borderlands where maybe 10 or so people are there to defend.
The zerg then dissapears once they have capped everything and heads to EB, where they roll everything there.
And when we group everyone together and go to seige the keeps back, the zerg is no where to be found – they just let everything fall and we get to go through empty keeps full of used seige golems.
I will be sure to get a better screenshot of the zerg as they roll in every 1.5 hours into our borderlands anytime after 4 am until about 4 PM. Everytime we seige up to defend the zerg will magically dissapear after they get pushed back and head back to EB. We can’t even get them to fight or stay long enough for us to fight them.
It’s nice to call this strategy and “coordination in order to win”, but it is not fun and it’s not PVP, its PVDOOR.
So you’re saying you got killed by a …door? that’s what I am gathering here, because it obviously was not a group of players that killed you…
Just stop, please.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
I am loving fighting against TC. They aren’t really outnumbering us at all – we just match up at odd times. There is always something to try to take over or defend, so its all good to me.
Ignore the trolls, because they don’t speak for us. TC is an awesome server to play against.

‘’Players left UO because they didn’t like the griefing associated with their AWESOME PvP/PK set up. Real consequences associated with leaving “safe” areas. I left because I moved on to other MMOs – but no nerfs changed my love for UO’’
Maybe you were not around for the major Tamer nerfs or Archer nerfs then.. all because some crybaby PvP’ers didn’t know how to kill a Pvp Tamer (Which was easy if they bothered to learn to play).
Sadly their Nerfs had a huge knock on effect in PvE and Guilds just decided to leave (Mine included) as the fun was gone.
Sadly UO is a deserted wasteland with the only few payers left playing the only viable PvE template (Sampire/Thrower). Good times though :-)
I just don’t want GW2 to go the same way and cater to the vocal ’’Nerf’’ group
Probably not, I left long before EA took over. I played Atlantic for 4 years, played Novus Opiate for a year, random sphereserver shards for a while, and finally moved on.

there is nothing better than a good thief v. thief scuffle.

Seriously, it is so bad. I turned off the dialog volume specifically because of this. The moaning and the incessant ‘ah, na, nuh uh’ type nonsense you hear in Divinity’s Reach, etc. Come ANet – what in the world is that?

Seriously guys, I’m amazed nobody has cottoned on to this, I do it EVERY time. Cloak and Dagger and I get my kill. It surprises every one of you when I do it and again, the hesitation gives us the time to set you up. Help your friends by guarding them.
You’re not the only one mate!
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
If I can give you guys a little tip, when it’s 2 or 3 of you, and one of you goes down and the thief stealths, don’t presume it’s all safe and raise your buddy, I’m currently right next to you finishing him. Your best bet instead is to stick by your buddy and swing with a melee or just AoE right on your friend so that I can’t get to him, if I have low health, I’m probably not going to chance it if I see you pulling that, otherwise it’s a free kill on a downed person rather than throwing a spanner in the works and making the thief work harder. If there’s 3 of you, start raising immediately, I probably won’t have time to finish the kill animation.
So thieves can do the “finish them” move while stealthed? That explains it… I wondered how sometimes I’m out running supplies, or heading across the map solo and I get into a fight and go down, then nobody around, but suddenly a flag appears in my chest.
We sure can. So can mesmers, elementalists in mist form, warriors while invul, engi’s while mini/invul, etc.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
My main is a thief and backstab is ungodly strong and deserves a nurf and it wont really effect pve in the slightest
I would wager that you don’t have a thief.
Nerf frenzy + 100B.
Nerf churning earth + blink.
Nerf 3 clone 2 phantasm + shatter.
Situational stuff man. None of it needs a nerf – backstabs really only shine if you are power/crit based – aka a glass canon. Catch that thief out of stealth and he’ll go down quickly.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
TC, sorry about all of your siege at Redlake last night! You guys were not taking that kitten tower.
I am soo confused….. what is a kitten tower?
Kitten: a young cat
- or -
kitten: a woman who likes to date men older than her, usually by about 10 years, or more depending on the woman. Also the opposite of a cougar.
..not sure if you are trolling or don’t understand the ridiculousness of ANet’s forum censorship.
It was the other spelling of what beavers create.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
Truthfully, your color means absolutely nothing. All 3 borderlands are the same with different names for towers/camps. As previously stated, it just denotes which position you are in within your current match up.
Sanctum of Rall – [Choo]
[Edit]
Keep at it, thieves are a blast. To the idiots that cry nerf in PVP – the only thieves that are blowing you up are glass canons. Either stack toughness/vitality so you don’t get blown up, or learn to react quicker. Any class can glass canon it, we can just take you by surprise. I guarantee the people that complain are just too slow to react, and blame the game mechanics instead.
