Leg Specialist + Arrow Cart = Enemy lockdown

This just in from WvW:
Warriors trait Leg Specialist and getting on AC to lock down enemy forces for ever.
Better yet: have a few arrow carts and coordinate AC #2.

Intended? I think not.

I like how they gave Engineer bunkers the “to the ground” treatment (via Elixir S nerf) because Elementalist bunkers were overpowered.

If they touch the “King of Versatility” (“We see the elementalist as the king of versatility.” ANet, Dec 2012), they need to touch the Jester of Versatility as well.

Traps?

in WvW

Posted by: Pannonica.5378

Pannonica.5378

Is it working as intented that Traps can be placed while in stealth, without breaking stealth?

And what about placing a trap and then blinking/shadowstepping away, which results in you finishing the trap from a distance?

What about both of those together?
Remote stealth trap placement underneath a zerg?

What about the massive advantage Thieves have in placing traps and using them as an effective tool in WvW compared to other professions because they can place traps in an enemy zerg?

Hi again everyone,

I will say we want there to be play with the traps, but placing the traps while in stealth has very little counter to it, so we will be evaluating whether we would like to change this implementation. Thanks to everyone for you feedback and concerns.

Hugh

Seems a little OP if traps could be placed while in stealth.

could?

Also..this is what i was afraid of,I knew it….Anet why the hell are you doing this crap

This design was set so players wouldn’t put traps (especially the supply trap) on supply holds. Image if your zerg/small party didn’t have supply and went to restock at supply hold that had a few supply remove traps. As soon as the team has supply BOOM “Trapified” your supply is gone.

Which is exactly what is happening in the video.

I don’t understand the Kit Refinement ‘adjustment’ either… if they wanted to tone down 100nades for example, they could have done it a different way. Kit refinement became useless for me (and I don’t use 100nades), since it is one more (invisible) cooldown to handle.
Absolutely unintuitive and unfun gameplay.

I personally will never again spec into Kit Refinement.
That trait became as illogical and weak as many other Engineer traits.

Now we have a recharge time on the effects that result from Kit Refinement plus a 10 second CD on Kit Refinement itself?!
Come on… What did you try to achieve there? Why didn’t you lengthen the recharge timer of the KR skills?
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Kit_Refinement

If ANet wants to discourage engineers using builds with several kits (and this is the only conclusion I can draw from all of this, since once one Kit Refinement effect has procced you can’t use another kits Kit Refinement effect for 10 seconds and this is not including the effects recharge time), they should have replaced Kit Refinement with something else altogether, not make it useless.

What do Engineers excel at?

in Engineer

Posted by: Pannonica.5378

Pannonica.5378

In terms of WvW, this is my 2 cents (TL;DR at the end of this post):
The thing about the versatility from the engineer is also, that you almost never have the utilities you need in a certain situations equipped. Granted, we have everything (most of it kind of random in its effect to be honest), but we have to decide to put certain stuff in our button bar and leave certain stuff out.

There have been numerous situations in which I thought “If only I had ability/kit/tool/whatever X set-up before I went into this fight plus a completely different spec”.
We can counter a lot, but only if we anticipated what (class/spec) will be coming towards you (impossibru).

This basically means we have to respec according to whom we’re running with.
Is it your regular zerg, a group of 5, or roaming alone? All lead to different specs and button bar configurations.

You’re running with the regular zerg (and the according spec) and have to run supplies on your own and meet an enemy player (1v1), I’m usually dead, no matter the class (except hes a bad player and/or upscaled to 80).

You’re running a tanky spec roaming alone with all sorts of escape mechanics and then meet up with a small group you suddenly realise you can’t kill stuff. Porting back to warcamp, respeccing and organizing button bar changing gear…. then you go back to your group and on your way being jumped by one enemy player and you’re dead again, wishing you didn’t respec.

If you have the right spec and button bar configuration for the right situation everything is fine though. Of course lower damage compared to other dps classes… but its fun to play the engineer and you feel like you can contribute or at least stand your ground and don’t be a burden on your group.

The most fun I had with the engineer up to today is with:

- pushing people that hide inside keeps/towers off cliffs with shield or rifle
- being super tanky (but doing neglectable damage) and outliving/following dps classes (especially when you feel, they just burned all their amazing cooldowns and don’t know what to do anymore). Most of the time they decide to get away and I just follow them and slow/weaken all the time for minutes and keep them from achieving their goal. This is 1v1 or 2v1 of course.
- seeing splash damage you put out into a huge blob (very situational though) in a pistol spec.
- elixier gunning fumigate through gates (probably getting fixed sometime), and dropping an acid bomb
- throwing grenades off of walls as a keep defender in condition specc and see many condition numbers pop up (this is a pain though, because of clipping line of sight on walls and survivability)
- making great escapes by using elixir guns acid bomb while being invisible/stealthed. Those great escapes usually only last a small amount of time due to the amazing mobility many other professions have
- using LoS, like running around rocks/stairs/walls, running up them and jumping down on the other side in a half condition damage half tanky build to annoy enemy players, while doing damage (this is something other classes can do as well, I figure).

Most of the time I feel too squishy or too weak on the dps side though and hope I never meet other players in 1v1 without LoS blocking objects I can run around, because I’d definitely be in the wrong spec when I meet them and/or have the wrong utilities/kits/tools on my button bar.

Don’t get me wrong…. I do not have an alt and play exclusively on my engi and have loads of hours /played, nor do I consider me to be a bad player (but maybe I am, who knows). Also I dont want to qq. After hundreds of hours played, I got the impression the engineer is kind of random in every respect, though.

All the videos you find about how awesome an engineer against 1 or 2 enemies is, and how much damage you can put out, usually show upscaled and/or bad enemy players and luck on the engineers side.

Since I do not know how playing other classes in WvW feels, I can’t tell if its different at their end. Maybe its the same (situational/random feeling) for them…

I heard +healing would be scaling very good with engineers skills and bought all neccessary gear and specced accordingly, but I didn’t feel I could contribute enough, because I couldn’t really see the result, except some healing numbers from Super Elixir from my Elixir Gun ability. Maybe we should see the healing effect from the waterfield/blast combo in numbers as well.

The ability to defend a point in sPvP in the according spec is almost silly though.

TL;RD: We engineers have loads of abilities, yes, but its all very situational and you most likely have the wrong spec/button bar config/gear for any given situation. This assessment on my end is biased towards WvW.

Carpet bombing with grenades. no one else can lay down the constant aoe damage engineers can.

Yeah, hard to aim and hit people with and easy to avoid (in a WvW setting that is)

So, posting bs in a thread that is completely unrelated to recent hacking events, trying to devalue everything that was achieved by BT before the hackers even started rolling.

Nice suggestions, but those are stating the oblivious honestly.
You can’t seriously be suggesting accepting a blatant game error, by saying dodge, stability, condi removal? Facts about stability, condi removal and the pulsing nature of the AC aoe effect aside: Just lol…
This would be like accepting a design flaw like culling and saying “yeah, just be careful in wvw and learn to avoid the invisible zerg” or like: “oh, your enemy engi has exploited into 5 minutes of stability? nvm, just don’t try to cc him.”

Why learn to deal with a non intended use of game mechanics when fixing it would be the correct way to go?

WvW Turtling - Intended or Not?

in WvW

My proposal of a dynamic AoE target cap in relation to how many people are how close to each other is still valid. If Anet can balance health and possibly other stats (or is it outgoing damage from players?) of Bosses according to how many players are present dynamically, I see no technical hurdle to dynamically raise AoE target cap to punish extreme stacking.

By the way, as somebody on another forum put it:
" One (portal bombing) is a clever use of an in-game mechanic by design, the other (clumping) is a “clever” use of an in-game limitation."
Neither is an exploit in my opinion. It just shows some peoples opinion about the game and moreover their attitude about the competitive gameplay of direct one on one/group versus group, or when doing the clump, the lack thereof.

Another video of what happens when a full blown clump (40+ according to their commander) meets 11 enemies (us). What happens is a clear sign of a lacklustre and uninspired (or helpless, I don’t know) gameplay on the side of the clump (including siege) until we doubled back and find half of them went somewhere else, so we went in.
I can’t imagine Anet wants their player to play like the clump (and have fun); but that may be lack of imagination on my part.
http://www.own3d.tv/Pryda/video/849925

I am aware not everyone fancies direct confrontation as much as our guild does. We usually seek it and avoid ‘sitting’ in a keep or tower, but we do that as well if the need arises.

Essentially, in my opinion, you play the game with other people (including the enemies) and clumping shows some people clearly don’t want to play with other people and it keeps me wondering why they are even bothering with wvw.

Both traits allow us to wily break out of the bracket ANet set for this class. Thrice the keystrokes for 2/3 the impact.

Oh this bracket… Why not get rid of the notion, the GW2 community would need a Jester of Versatility bracket?
Just make it a real profession that can put out pressure (in many forms, not just the creative usage of game mechanics builds or bug/troll builds) like every other profession out there please.
Every time an unintended mechanic is discovered and we begin to feel like a ‘real’, pressure profession, we can see the potential of this profession, just to be denied of it after the following patch. Q_Q

RIP Kit Refinement

in Engineer

Posted by: Pannonica.5378

Pannonica.5378

I got excited when I read the patchnotes for the first time as well…
But what looked good on virtual paper is meh in game.
Most of the bullet points are bug fixes (lets say they all work and no new ones got introduced). That I appreciate, but I can’t thank ANet, because fixing bugs should go without saying.

The next major things that come to mind:
Super Elixir buff, Veil gets removed from Throw U, and Kit Refinement.

- Super Elixir buff is decent, but can’t make up for the Kit Refinement modification. I tried this in full heal gear and it doesn’t really enable us to go full heal support, but then again ANet doesn’t want healers in this game. ‘Sadly’ other classes excel in healing specs though.
- Throw U veil removal is a good step into the right direction (removing randomness). Many people like the removal. I liked the gambling and a second source of invisibility plus yet another source of confusion by comboing the field with projectile finishers. But it is gone now, so no questions asked.

- Kit Refinement, and I’ll try to keep it short:

Invisible Cooldown makes it kind of unusable.
Invisible Cooldown introduces new randomness (opposing the removal of randomness)
Duration of effects don’t make up for it.
-> Skill is basically dead, in line with other dead cheap skills respectively.

More detail:
Grenade Kits Kit Refinement effect hits ok’ish. Damage scales with stats and can crit -> proc crit effects. Hits 5 targets from what I can tell.
Would be interesting to know whether it removes one boon from each target it hits. Doesn’t make it viable or plannable though, cause of the clunky invisible cd.

Magnetic Bomb synergizes well with Bomb Kit. Pulls only 3 enemies though. Range isn’t amazing.
Unusable in intense fights though, because you usually activate Bomb Kit when people are already near you. If you don’t know if the cooldown is up to pull 3 people, you shouldn’t activate Bomb Kit to pull them towards you in the first place though.

Glue Trail has a long duration, but I can’t see its application via invisible cooldown.

Super Speed seemed too short duration to be anything useful.

I don’t have a solution for how to make Kit Refinement viable for the devs.
But I don’t think they even need one.
They brought Kit Refinement in line with other cheap traits, basically removing the notion of how awesome it could be from the game. Lets just forget about Kit Refinement and move on.

Edit: Maybe introduce a master trait in the Tools trait line, replacing one of the useless ones there, to remove Kit Refinements cooldown and make the effects more awesome by increasing range, duration and effectiveness of all KR effects. This would make speccing into the tools trait line viable finally.
But suggestions like these are moot, since ANet devs follow their own plan and one post on the forums won’t change that.

What I have yet to grasp is ANets concept of creating a profession that is almost, but not quite, the king of versatility (i.e. the jester of versatility), make it ‘hard’ for the player to play efficiently, and then, instead of rewarding the player for handling his character well, you get to suffer the ‘costs’ of versatility.

Shouldn’t it be like:
Versatile, hard to play class gets mastered by the player = reward in terms of damage output (=bags).
Instead it is:
Versatile, hard to play class gets mastered by the player = punishment in terms of damage output.

Not talking about the ‘clever use of game mechanics’ builds here of course.
Personally, I played an affliction warlock in WoW, when that class was hard to play.
But if you mastered it, you got the reward in terms of effectiveness (damage output).

Even with Engis bugs (maybe) ironed out (in the future), I don’t understand ANets concept, really.
