Use a bask until strike steal opener followed by pistol whip dodge towards them and pistol whip again, depending on what defensive cooldowns they popped you can use a third pistol whip or auto attack chain for a while then dodge to them and pistol whip them again. If u need a gap closer u still have inf sig or inf strike just pick which is better. In-between you pistol whip chains u have other dodge and ports in the form of withdraw and roll for initiative and shadow step.

IMO pistol whip has always been meta it just costs more and takes smart training setup and skill to pull off. This version of my pistol whip focuses on perma swiftness to stay mobile and on target to land auto attacks and land more pistol whips, also remember you can move during the pistol smack part of the animation to help land the stun/rupt and better position yourself to land most of the rest of the sword animation.

If anyone want to see me use it in game send me a mail and I will try to play this weekend and show it off. I will also be making a daredevil version which I think will really put pistol whip back on the map but my build for that won’t be revealed till pvp ladders and I join a team.

I still use s/p. And I will still keep using it. S/p is still OK to use, yes it needs a buff and can be countered but as can any other weapon set. S/p, the way I use it is with acro trickery and deadly arts. Come hot release I will try acro daredevil and trickery. I usually use it as a tanky dodge type set but still pumping out the burst. And for all the people saying its not worth or no one uses s/p after update that’s something that a few believe. I have s/p builds for stealth and also nonstealth builds.( I look ve the non stealth one cause everyone thinks that a thief is suppose to stealth).

S/p rupts can be good if not god like at shutting down someone. And if you are having a bad time with it then guess what……… You are just bad at s/p thief, congratulations you need to practice it more and stop spewing non sense about how no one can rupt people with it. I can say I have caught a few people off guard with s/p but even still if they are pro or not they should be able to adapt and overcome my terrible weapon set yet I have seen many a “pro or skilled player” alike just die or get instant locked down to it and usually that playing the meta shadow arts regen perma stealth till full health build.

I been using 20066 s/p for a while now and i love it, anyone that says its a waste is just plain bad imo, i dont care who they are. i have not had any trouble catching up to anyone, nor escaping them. i personally call my version of the build my “Escape Thief”, like the Escape ranger in gw1. Also i used this build in ranked and i have gotten up to top 60ish before i ended up working nights so keep using it it has the same potential as all the other meta builds and i know a few so called "pro players i rekted with it.

Consume plasma and stealing stability/might.

Do you think that when you use the consume plasma skill that it should grant more than one stack of stability? Maybe like 3 stacks to help the thief survive a small bit more. Also when stealing stability and might stacks should we get the full stacks stolen, just as a way to reward the thief for landing the steal and punish others for having so much stacks? The duration wouldn’t matter to me, but i’m just curious if anyone would also like this change as a “quality of life” improvement for us.

Rapiers or Katanas?

My terminology may be incorrect, but aren’t one-handed curved single-blade swords called kodachi? I believe katanas are for two hands.

any sword can be wielded/ swung with one hand depending on how strong that person is and what technique they are using. just also remember that anything swung with two hands is always more than twice as strong as when swung with one hand.

Choking gas from shortbow #4 skill also heals for each tick when using signet of malice.

Use inf strike then steal fast and u can land an immobilize while out of range for inf strike.

When using the stolen skill “throw gunk” cast dancing dagger, or sb #3 skill or any other projectile finisher through it for confusion stacks, also works with other ethereal fields,: note if fighting a turret engi it will give 2 stacks if it bounces between him and his thumper turret which can = dead engi.

use steal and pistol #5 to teleport to a downed body then cast stomp for a faster route to prep for a stomp.

Use Shortbow #5 to teleport onto a downed foe for a blind stomp that an ally might be starting ( or yourself if he is healing up as you teleport to them) for another type of blind stomp. (also blind people ressing the downed enemy so they cant try to stop the stomp via some cc)

Ask for the team to call targets so u can inf into the fight from a bit away and have a safe place to run away to when using inf return on sword #2.

Use shadowstep and inf strike to set up teleport jukes. some is to bait the enemy to chase you after u then place a inf strike and then run off for a while and turn to them as if you are to attack them then teleport behind them usually they will assume you stealthed away or teleported onto a higher ledge and not behind them. ( always look back to see if they are waiting for you at your return location before taking the port back.)

If you have the look behind you camera keybinded, you can use the cluster bomb and poison field to shoot behind you as the enemy follows you.

With the stolen skill healing seed (stolen from rangers) use shadow refuge , then drop the seed when closer to the end of refuge and shot a cluster bomb into the unrefuged part of the healing water area for a higher healing burst while waiting in refuge. If using daggers you can spam Dagger #2 in the water field and steal gain health and deal damage.

Poison fields are unblockable for when someone is blocking and will rip off agies.

If someone is using a projectile blocking/ reflect skill aim for the poison field to land just before it would be effected by the skill and it will deal damage and still be a poison field.

Teleports can now be used to teleport onto the keep ledges so use them in down state to try to get away from mele damage if possible. as well as to escape a nasty fight you cant win.

Downstate 3, if popped before you ressed by a teammate, will grant you stealth when ressed.

Use infiltrators strike to immobilize more than one enemy to trap them in a aoe skill. ( great for team fights, or if using caltrops.

If fighting a longbow warrior, you can reflect his burst longbow skill and turn it into your own fire field instead of his and most warriors will stand it in liek an idiot thinking its theirs and even blow their might stacking combo

If using dagger off-hand use dancing dagger just before you used steal and cloak and dagger for a slightly higher burst setup. It will also cripple them and possibly allow for a easier stealth attack skill to be landed.

Oh yea im not sure if this still works but if you time cnd right with a dodge jump you can land a evasive cnd for free stealth =P

Simple, the half-thought up thing you saw in WvW was simply a Team death match and not actual GvG. it was something started by the community. The original GvG ( from Guild wars 1)always had a kill the other teams lord objective, and the devs did mention if im not mistaken that the GvG game mode would be returning in 2. the thing is with that WvW bootleg GvG all u do is Spam aoe in a spot and see if u got more aoe damage and aoe healing. there is no real objectives there is nothing to counter play and help your team win if they get steamed rolled such as a lord rush. If there was say a person with a commanders tag that the teams had to kill to win then ok. but there isnt it was just 15vs15 or 10vs10, 20vs20. Imo it was always just a guild duel or just a group of players wanting to give away free loot bags in wvw.

Having trouble stomping

I usually do 1 of a few things, I either spam pistol 5 twice on the dead body then stomp, or also add in smoke screen for a added layer of protection to hide behind to block projectiles. Secondly I like to use the shadow step stomp method of starting my stop and using the shadow step utility when its active to shadow step away from the fight in a safe spot and just as I’m about to finish the stomp animation port back with the reactivation of the skill. Also I have used shadow refuge for the stomping as well as being in stealth period. Sometimes I use them all at the same time. but when in doubt just sit back with sb (or any other ranged combo weapon) and spam attacks on the downed target , if sb use chocking gas then spam cluster bomb and remember a king always let the pawns move in first.

Help Against Engineers in PvP

Usually if im playing s/d thief against an engi i steal and hold onto the throw gunk ability till steal is off recharge. then i use the ability and spam dagger 4 through the field and stack tons of confusion on him. and once he wastes his condi removal/heal i steal and do it again then go in for a few auto attacks or cluster bombs to finish him off. since dagger 4 is a projectile finisher and it bounces the turrets become his own downfall as the confusion bounces back and forth to him and his turrets adding more stack of confusion usually about 2 each use of dagger skill try it out and see how ya like it. and if playing d/d thief same applies but you can also add in some ldb and dagger auto for bleeding and poison to go with ya high damage. i dont ever say a class cant be countered its just no one ever thinks of what tools they have and takes advantage of it.

Another way is to have 15 in nature magic and at least 10 in beast mastery to grab mighty swap as well as 20 in marksmanship and 10 in skirmishing. pet would be jungle stalker and any other of your choice. the traits are as follows Marksmanship- activating a signet gives might, in skirmishing- critical hits grant might to your pet, in beast mastery- pets gain 3 stacks of might when activated in battle. Weapons are sword warhorn/ what ever else ya like. utilities are 3 signets or 2 and qz, and any heal personally i would pick heal as one or healing spring to use armor runes to grant might when using a healing skill. weapon sigils are battle on each weapon set also add precision to stack crit chance.

now with 15 in nature magic what ever boon u get ya pet gets as well with usually a way shorter duration so when we get might we give it to the pet the way we use the build i said is simple. enter combat with other pet out and non sword/horn set out. once in combat pet swap and then weapon swap as u weapon swap use the f2 of the pet while quickness is activated followed by warhorn 5 skill . that should be 18 stacks so far . next activate 2 signets such as hunt and renewal cause they recharge faster and instant cast. now we up to 20 next auto attack with qz for fast might stacking on auto attack with sword 1, and bam 25 stacks of might on a high critting pet. if using crit gear u should also have added a few more crits in if taken the pet gets might when critting trait also can use warhorn 4 if your picked them traits seeing as it has a good change of critting.

also other weapon set can be sword torch for extra fire field for help with gaining might as well

the moa will heal u on swap as soon as its out all day everyday and as for the f2 skill, look dont be lazy making ur pet have to run to the person why not kite the person to ya pet ? i have used the moa to daze rupt being stomp sooo much that i was able to hold off till help came or till lick wounds actually worked.

wow ummm we also other pets with good cc abilities. im not gonna bash ur ranger knowledge but try using black and a pink moa on that bunker. they can heal u pretty good and they have a f2 skill which can daze/stun a foe and if ur running a bunker spec them skills are on a 15 sec cd. we also have hyena that can summon an exta dog pet or we can use devours that also has a knock back skill just saying we have plenty of cc. maybe l2build a better bunker or actually try to fully balance ur builds more. here is a link to where i post a few of my builds the first one is actually a good bunker spec u can tweak to suit u better. http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/76271-psymons-ranger-builds/

After reading that line in the Reddit thread, I felt like someone kicked me swiftly between the legs.

I’ve always known Ranger’s were recognized as the weakest profession, but “to see it in lights” like this really hurts. I play as a kitten good Ranger, but I also realize I’m working ten times harder than every other class to be remotely competitive/threatening. It helps when I switch to my alts and roflstomp people without so much as twitching my little finger, but I love my Ranger and want to stick with the class!

That’s what happens when you don’t play the ‘in’ specs.
Ranger has REALLY good ones atm, but they are few, yet even when I half-as PvP with those I still tend to win the majority of deuls.

Oh and greatsword is never a good idea.
From a competitive standpoint.
Traps and/or axe/dagger tend to work far better and are generally far more useful (even though that doesn’t say much)

Lol no offense but duels dont really mean much, I win alot of mine also but the game isnt balanced around duels, hell I could go on guardian and win 95% of duels with 1 build but not be viable for tpvp because its too squishy. Ranger has ummm no real viable builds atm. Basically anything you think is viable someone else can do better.

now dante after dueling me many a times and even being in a tourny u say rangers have no viable builds yet we crushed premade teams and as i recall i was on ym ranger killing bunkers solo dolo yolo. and at some cases even doubling as a bunker for a short time. we have a few viable builds g. i know it cause i use them all but the trap condi ranger cause someone else made that build. rangers take a lot more skill imo to master and build because we have a bunch of bad traits/ bugs and what not atm.

fury feels so useless to me though. power ranger builds are terrible at best. its all about the conditions imo. they do bucket loads more dmg than any power ranger post sb/qz destruction patch. but to answer your question as everyone above has said, it is possible to maintain fury for a very long duration. but i feel it is much less dangerous for a ranger to have perma fury than say a thief or warrior, or ANY OTHER power build on ANY OTHER CLASS.

i use a type of power build ranger and i must say i steamrolled many condi trap rangers. i cant help but laugh at this saying that condi trap ranger is the only viable build see as mine deals more damage and allows for better survivability than any trap ranger wanna be. and with the upcomming buffs for rangers idk if my builds are going to be effected or become almost to the point of semi op.

perma fury is easy. use a red moa and a warhorn and take about 15 in nature magic is all that is really needed. use warhorn buff pet swap and when the fury for war horn is gone use the moa then pet swap again and use warhorn by the time u able to pet swap the moa 30 skill will be able to be used again. idk if its a bug with pets f2 abilities but if u use say a wolf for fear howl on a 45 sec cd and swap it out say every 20 secs it will be recharged again at pet swap even if the 45 secs are not up. so rangers perma fury is really easy to accomplish.

Retaliation for mesmers? Really? For mesmers?

You are dumb if you think you could achieve anything with an attitude like that.
The only reasonable way mesmers can get Retaliation is from Chaos Storm, which last for like 3s per tick.

If you let the mesmer camp in his Chaos Storm and keep hitting them while that short Retal is up, you’re the one who needs to “l2p”. And you know, there are skills and traits which remove boons as well. Maybe your build was just not made for that fight if it lasted for 5min to begin with.

In tpvp you fight for point control.Ofc he is bloody camping wtf im supposed to do kite him?What skill or trait for ranger removes boons?Am i supposed to enter every match prepared for mesmers only? Im toughness/power traited i cant use sigil remove boon on crit effectively.Only option i have is to dps him down before his clones kill me i dont have time to dance around him when i see his ret buff up.You think ranger can win war of attrition against mesmer? Just kitten and gtfo.

ummm i play ranger and im traited for same thing u are and i still pull off 40% crits and 47 crit damage and i know how to kite a mesmer when they use null field and chaso storm let alone chaos armor. i dont want to say l2p but in this case g i would say learn to build. i find my builds to be very effective against all and even mesmers. there isnt anything wrong let him sit in his field and such it wont last long and it will be on cooldown. after that go in and do ya thing also be sure to always have some sort of condi removal on your bar and your golden. if a mesmer is kicking your but with as much toughness u say u have then u def need to learn to build or just l2p like others are telling you.

I actually have used all the bird pets and i must say i prefer the eagle/hawk. that fast recharge rate plus the added bleeding is too good to pass up imo. sure the raven hits harder in 1 attack and inflicts blind but the eagle/hawk can actually stack his attacks to help apply more bleeding to the targets.
