I’ve been playing for a long time, just extremely casually though, and until recently I have finally taken a larger interest in the PvP scene, but after going from wolf to dragon and getting like 2k matches played in the past while I have just finally noticed how poorly balanced this game really is.
Why has anet let thief just absolutely poop on mesmers for so long? In what sense was it ok that a class in a entire whole completely nullifies an entire other class? This is exactly the same problem that engis and necros have and it’s extremely unhealthy, this in it’s entire being is why this game will never be “e-sports.” thinking the entire “rock paper scissor” balance philosophy is ok is why this game won’t go anywhere.
Hello I’m Rad Mage, I’ve played mesmer for quite a while. (between mes and ele anyways) and I used to use focus in PvP purely for the pull/interrupt,
but after anet changed the pull to have a 1 second use time it’s fallen behind as a kind of lackluster off hand when compared to torch, which is supposed to be a condition off hand but because of the stealth and reliable phantasm it far outclasses the focus. Focus pull is still strong when used right but it’s no longer that instant “get off me” button we had, making the match up vs thieves even worse than it already was. Another problem that has been a long time problem now is the phantasm is pretty weak, it has a long cool down and your enemy has to be pretty dumb to stand there and get hit by it. The main problem with focus at the moment is it doesn’t synergize whatsoever and the phantasm is really lackluster compared to all the other ones.
I purpose a few changes to focus to bring it back to par as a power based off hand
First proposed change is simply making the pull instant cast again and having the phantasm “chase” and follow the target doing the axe 5 spin like on warrior off hand axe. The new phantasm of course will do less damage overall than the previous phantasm but atleast it will actually hit the target.
Second idea is making the phantasm do a chop like eviscerate dazing the target for 1 second, keeping the 1 second cast time on the pull. this new phantasm will obviously do less damage and have a long action time before each attack but it will synergize extremely well with the interrupt build for an off hand weapon and mesmer as a whole.
TL;DR currently mesmer is strong, but focus isn’t, bring it to par with the other weapons please.

Favorite Mes spec: shatter. Role: Roaming/Mid point assault
Favorite duo: Thief, to kill other thieves.
Buff focus to be instant pull on 4 (like before) and reduce cool down to 20, reduce range to 800 reduce pull radius 400 change 5 to be a clone that does a single eviscerate-like strike, dealing decent damage and applying 5 stacks of vuln on hit the phantasm strike time should match that of zerker illusion. OR change it to be like warrior 5 spin and it follows the enemy dealing about the same damage and applying vuln.
Change pistol 5 cool down to 20 seconds
Change blurred frenzy back to distortion
Rating classes based on difficulty out of 10, 10 being the hardest.
Ele is easy – mid 4/10
Win: all but s/f
Lose: S/F fresh air
Engi is mid – hard 8/10
Win: P/S/P, SD
Lose: Cele
Guard is easy – hard 6/10
Win: Bunker, Shouts

you gotta get the jump on them, make one mistake and you can lose the fight, thief vs mesmer is probably the hardest match for mes.
This game is great, the combat is fun, the lore is pretty cool, the style is amazing, the game looks like it should be smooth, but the game play is lack luster, there is very little to do for endgame in PvE so PvP is really our only choice, but you don’t balance for WvW so condition specs and zerging are the kings, hopefully enough people talk about condition duration foods and AoE caps in the CDI. In SPvP You wait out patches so that people can develop the meta over time, then we figure it out with in about 1-2 weeks, and then you do nothing for months on end, and we are stuck in a meta that’s obviously super unbalanced, we cry out for help but you only help when it suits you. Then people leave the game, the good thing is, the game is free so if you ever start to actually balance the game regularly we might come back. The bad thing? This will probably never happen. The game has been balanced poorly by trying to balance in huge lumps instead of little bits at a time, and your recent ready up showed that you don’t really understand whats happening with the games balance. The road is really bumpy while waiting around for the next balance patch, because we don’t know if you will listen to our pleas and actually balance or just break more things. But I won’t lie this recent patch was pretty good, most things are actually in a ok place, with a bit more balance PvP should be ok, but there are 4 things that stand out as too strong. 1: strength runes, these runes just give WAY too much power/damage, and almost every power class uses these now because of how effective they are. 2: Balthazar runes on engi, it just adds way too much damage to engis incendiary powder which they can keep with 100% up time on burning, besides that engi is actually pretty balanced. 3: Healing signet still gives way too much healing for a passive heal, it just lets warriors build offensive but be tanky because of stances + healing signet. 4: Long bow on warrior and cleansing ire, please just change this, make it have to hit on the placement tick so that if we play right, we can dodge it and they won’t just clear 3 conditions for free.
even if you decide to balance these things I’m certain we will find something new with in 1-2 weeks that might be too strong but that’s why you always do balance in bits instead of bunches.
NEVER should a DoT deal more damage on 1 tick than 1 hit of a burst skill
I’m sorry, you do realize this is absolute kitten, right? Have you ever seen a 10k condi tick? No? Well I’ve seen 15k direct damage in a single cast. 10k isn’t all that crazy either. And that is with PvE stats, in PvP in a group, you’re going to deal massively more damage than a condi build would ever dream of.
was it a warrior using kill shot or eviscerate? And why are you placing PvE in a PvP discussion? You obviously don’t know what you are talking about. Condi’s actually WILL and DO, more damage than a power spec in a group IN ANY PVP SITUATION be it WvW or PvP.

It’s coming I’m too busy fixing the holes in my wall after rage quitting.
For a skill that is so easy to dodge it does mediocre damage. on top of that maybe the water 2 skill should just be instant but longer cool down and less vuln because I rarely ever use that spell EVER.
WvW is plagued by unbalanced classes because of food or just plain bad balance, zergs being THE one and only thing and hackers (though there are VERY few in the whole game)
PvP conditions are too strong, if you are playing power you are forced to run hambow or thief, bunkers make this game mode a snorefest. solo queue is unplayable because of skyhammer and spirit watch (even thought spirit watch isn’t that bad it still favors orb runners over capping points)
PvE is boring because it takes next to NO skill. BUT some things do indeed take a bit of skill and are fun.
This game REALLY has potential but you just aren’t meeting it and for some reason you hold back by not releasing constant updates sure these content releases like bazaar of the 4 winds and stuff are fun and refreshing but just adding temporary content won’t help when the majority of the game is suffering.
This thread is dumb, thief already can apply burst conditions and deal over 5k damage per tick. thief doesn’t need buffs/move on to more important matters.
Please list your PvP/WvW roaming S/D builds if you still run it.

except they are doing it in the wrong area, give me a reason why you would want to defend in EoTM over your own WvW? there is no point besides maybe getting 3 bags of loot. sure it’s fun for necros to fear a whole zerg off the edge, but when were trying to take a keep and you’re trying to stop us by repairing and using arrow carts it’s just a waste of time. It doesn’t matter if thats how the game was designed, because the design was awful to being with.

you just pop all your cantrips get a lightning flash + updraft off, switch to fire – burning speed – ring of fire – fire grab – if that hit there is no way they could have lived unless the popped invuln, in which case you just play normally while doing heavy damage. this is a pure fun build (unless it becomes esports somehow lel)
If you’re building full zerk in any PvP situation you’re going to have a bad time.
Ele’s are rad as kitten.
Axe shouldn’t be 900 range either. It is made to be a mid-range weapon, leave it as a mid range weapon. We could also use melee condi, melee support, melee cleave, a defensive OH, etc. as other weapon set archetypes that we don’t have right now. But those should exist as new weapons, not by trying to change one that already exists.
Axe is built around being a 600 range weapon, and it works in certain builds (mainly MM builds and PvE power builds), and even if it was fixed to be competitive it still wouldn’t fit with a range increase. Just wait for them to give us a bow, firearm, or something that actually has a kit meant to be 900-1200 range.
how is the kit not meant for 900 range? the whole thing is meant to try and keep the enemy away from you so you can get the whole 2 channel on them, with the extra range that will be possible and axe can be used without being kited around by anything with 900 range on projectiles. were the only class with no long range power coverage without bringing in a staff.
Just because we don’t have a 1200 range power weapon doesn’t mean that should be axe.

I find axe to be “usable” if traited and using a good (zerker) axe with a sigil of force or ruby or some damage attachment. Also not just relying on Autoattack, but using other skills and the #2 whenever off cooldown. This hits like a truck. It goes well with the focus and with minions—the Vuln stacking helps them, or your group do more damage. I think this is the purpose of the axe, for some condition stacking, and some damage, and some group support/help. Seems like a hybrid weapon like the warrior’s MH sword.
If you want to solo faceroll, use the dagger. Any old dagger will do, you don’t need traits, just tank up, wade in and hack away and watch the bodies hit the floor—like the warrior’s MH axe

Necro has an amazing ranged DPS weapon. It’s called death shroud+ life blast. Also not too mention that unless a person completely evades it life blast is a homing missile.
Life blast is laughable at more than 600 range.

Errr… Works fine in PvP for me. Sure the range is a little underwhelming but other than that its fine.
just because you can use it in a hotjoin and do ok doesn’t make it a decent weapon. It’s a flawed weapon and has very little power when compared to other ranged weapons.

Why is it that our only viable option for range on power builds is limited to such a short range? No other class has this problem. Every single other class has mechanics that help it survive reasonably long while having long enough range to hit from afar we are forced to go into almost melee range while having next to no mobility and a mechanic that is dumb and counter productive. Death shroud is not a reason for Necro to be lacking what other classes have.
This game needs duel class integration like in gw1. This game only has 8 professions it could really use some variety.
I don’t really think we should look at Balthazar runes as the source of the problem. Incendiary Powder has always been somehow broken gameplay wise. Some Dhuumfire-like rework, compensated over another skills/traits, could probably achieve a much better results than just nerfing the runes.
So you’re suggesting nerfing IP to compensate for balthazar runes… This isn’t the best choice but I’m afraid it’s the route a-net will take. God knows they don’t know kitten about their own game because they implemented these horrendous runes to begin with.
Anyways, nerfing the runes would bring better rune diversity to engis and accomplish the entire purpose of the rune rework to begin with. Leave balthazar how it is and there’s just one rune so incredibly superior to everything else that it’s just a bad joke.
I’m suggesting changing IP from an automatic on-crit proc to something different, like applying 1s bruning on every Posion Dart Volley hit or 4/5s on Blunderbuss, so it can be actively avoided/mitigated, and compensate it by improving other condition sources, like increasing the bleed duration on pistol autoattack by 1s/2s or/and increasing the chance of triggering Sharpshooter, without touching the runes at all.
if you want to dhuumfire it, then make it apply on tool belt use

Minion traits should remain primarily in Death Magic for thematic reasons, as well as the reason that it’s just so much easier than trying to find Blood Magic traits that should go into Death Magic instead.
And the real changes that need to go into death shroud involve synergy. Right now, using your profession mechanic basically turns off the Blood Magic tree. This, I feel, is a much larger problem than life blast’s cast time.

Churning earth takes 3 1/4 seconds to cast on an ele, you can’t move while casting it. Your life could be worse with those cast timers :p
yea it sucks, I used to play ele and I know churning earth is pretty bad, it should be instant but way lower damage blast
Deathshroud
Life blast hits hard, 3-5k a blast on powermancer is pretty good, but the cast time is just sad, 1 second channel is just a huge sign to “please dodge or stun me” making it unreliable.
Dark path is slow and unreliable, but this ability is strong on conditionmancer.
Doom is amazing and I love it it gives necro just a little bit of power when trying to get away from a out numbered fight.
Life transfer is good it does pretty good damage but the cool down is long doesn’t really need changes.
Tainted shackles is pretty great, it’s a very nice immobilize and applies some torment the base damage scales well, this is probably my favorite ability on necro right now.
Traits that apply boons when entering death shroud
The only good trait is furious demise and it’s 15 deep into curses, every trait that gives a boon on entering death shroud is so spread apart and the boons last only 3 seconds, it makes no sense to ever really take these traits over anything else.
Purposed changes that would be great
Change the cast time of Life blast to 1/2, reduce the damage by half, this makes it less unreliable hitting for 1.5k – 2.5k per blast is alot more reasonable than no damage because the enemy was smart and knew to dodge.
Change Dark path to an aoe teleport at 900 range like thiefs short bow.
Doom is great
Life transfer is good.
Traits
add a vigor trait, please, anywhere
Necro traits are so one sided or messy or bad that building for power is just not really worth it. And again the boon on entering death shroud is pretty poor.
Spite
This tree just needs a small tweak.
Siphoned power terrible trait, needs to be reworked some way to really fit its name.
Could be changed to: Gain might when you strike a foe, with a cool down of some sort, possibly 10 seconds. I’m not too sure how to make this trait worth it and still grant might.
Curses
Dhuum fire should be the grandmaster in this tree and not in spite.
withering precision can be moved to spite, it’s a bad trait anyways and will probably never be taken over the other grand master trait.
Death magic
This tree gives next to no boons, yet it gives boon duration? This tree should be changed to a boons on entering death shroud tree. Deadly strength can increase damage dealt while in death shroud.
Blood magic
This should be the minion focused tree. Changing Blood to power to a 10% of vitality to power, switching flesh of the master and dagger mastery and buffing dagger mastery to increase damage by like 5%, full of life switched with that terrible re animator trait. vampiric master and vampiric merged or just plain make siphoning stronger on certain spells and traits.
Soul reaping
this tree is great, a few changes here and there aren’t bad and some traits can be moved to better other trees.
Necro just needs so many traits changed it’s hard to think of every change but from what I’ve typed so far I think it’s obvious that necro needs a few changes in its traits to get some synergy.

CS has logs of what you receive. They are pretty good about replacing lost Legendaries and Precursors. Can’t hurt to try.

I would but I don’t have any screen shots or anything so I have no proof of having it. I really regret being lazy and not going straight to my bank and putting it in there.
I went from having a Howl to not having anything at all, I was putting random exotics into the forge and I had my howl in my last bag slot because I just got it the roll before I threw in a few more weapons and for some reason my howl was not at the end of the list but was in second place so I put it in not knowing now I’m out a howl. I feel terrible and just needed to vent it out a little… just anywhere… for real…
I can’t find one trait that is worse than that GRANDMASTER necro trait.
maybe the blood magics GRANDMASTER blood to power trait could be tied with one of the worst.
So what if the soul reaping line instead of being a Crit damage line was a Boon line? Then all the traits that applied boons when entering death shroud were moved to this trait line?

Hello, I’ve been getting random lag spikes for a while now, and it’s only in this game, any other game and it’s fine, but when I play this game I play fine for a bit then it starts lagging bad then goes back to normal and then laggy again, it’s annoying and has been making me not want to play for a while. this has been ever since the last server crash.
