Interesting stuff, I am curious why you use a sword offhand for the PvE build? Can it be replaced with Shield?

Personaly i like the sword phantasm, not bothered with shield but the block to phant has a big cast time?

Hi.
I am Reavan I have played Mesmer since launch and this is the best chrono shatter build I have come up with so far.

Pros;
Constant Alacrity up time even without the trait [Improved Alacrity]. This is due to having such short cd shatters with 3 clones.
Highest shatter dps possible, Alacrity to max and always shatter with 3 clones.
Has some Phantasm dps also due to phants remaining alive after shatters.
20-25 Stacks of might constantly.
Lots of Vulnerability Application. – Can spec for extra by change of traits if required via [Rending Shatter].
SUPER FUN if you like pressing buttons.

Cons;
Super unfun if you can’t juggle the cds very well/ dont like mashing buttons.
The rotation can fall apart if a mob kills one of your precious phantasms or two. (thank you new damage reduction)
Glass cannon know your positioning.
Lacks Condi Cleanse.

Shatter dps? NAY NAY you say well ok… But I disagree.
Chrono makes it possible.

Domination/Illusions/Chrono.
A weird combo for a power shatter mesmer you might say and I’d agree yet this really works.

Roation;
Open up with [Phantasmal Disenchanter] , Then [Phantasmal Berserker] , [Mirror Blade].
You now have 1 illusion and 2 phantasms. Great.
When you are in this situation you can shatter once and get another shatter straight after with another 3 clones.
This is due to- [Chronophantasma] and [Illusionary Reversion] giving you phant and clones after you shatter them, phant stays alive for one shatter and when you shatter more than 2 things you get one clone back MATHS!

So we now shatter with [Diversion] to get some nice vurlnability on there and maybe stop the foe attacking to get [Mental Anguish] up to 30% extra damage while dealing extra damage to people due to [Fragility].
In wvw any protective boons they might have been rocking should now also be gone on the first shatter due to [Shattered Concentration].

Hit [Mind Wrack] and admire the pretty numbers (and butterflies).
Now.
After you have done that you are now concentrating on keeping your shatters rolling.
Due to [Flow of Time] you will now be rocking some serious alacrity which is reducing your cooldown time (or speeding up time for your cooldowns).
You will also have at least 10 stacks of might(initially), once you get your game on its a case of using shatters when they are available.

Use Clone/phant generating skills off cooldown but make sure you shatter them always when they are 3. (its quite easy to maintain 2 almost at all times, 1 phant and 2 clones = 2 clones to shatter after shatter.)
Use GS 3 when you can but do not sacrafice shatter getting 3 clones to use a shatter cd, that will result in dps loss so [Mirror Blade] > [Mind Stab] if you have less than 3 clones. Luckily Mind stab has a really fast cast these days.

You can use melee mode as well, the extra phantasm in utility is shatter fodder so you can STAY in the weapon mode you want, in wvw you have to swap weapons with the wvw build but there you don’t need a full dps roation, weapon swap is not affected by alacrity and all other skills are so you need two phantasms ready on one bar.

My Shatter priority after the opener as –
[Mind Wrack]
[Diversion]
[Cry of Frustration]
[Continuum Split]
[Distortion]

With [Continuum Split] being an exception sometimes as I’ll only use it when I have at least some CDs and [Mind Wrack] to blow so I can get two [Mind Wrack] ’s after another.
It takes some serious getting used to and due to the low cds of everything it is akin to playing the piano and you will have to keep an eye on your cooldowns to try maximise dps, for me its very fun to play we are mesmers not brain dead eles or warriors!

For WVW I am changing it up a little.

For extra condi cleanse.

With this you open in sword/torch with [The Prestige] then the first phant you use is [Phantasmal Mage] switch to GS and [Phantasmal Berserker] then [Mirror Blade].

You have your 3 clones ready to shatter; [Diversion] which will stun the target and making them vulnerable. Then its a case of hitting [Mind Wrack] + [Mind Stab] and continue from there. That should easily one shot a thief. (Evil Grin)

FAQ:
Q: Why [Phantasmal Disenchanter]??
A: To keep one weapon available at all times to max alacrity usage if you swap weapons you put everything on a 10 sec CD.

Q: Why Illusion trait line, its for condi?
A: It reduces the CD of many skills such as [Mirror Blade](6.5s instead of 8 not counting alacrity- [Illusionist’s Celerity]) and ALL of your shatters – [Master of Misdirection]. Which you y’know need to dps. It also allows you to stack up to 20-25 stacks of might with [Shattered Strength] + [Mirror Blade] + Sigil of strength + Rune of Strength.

Now just give me credit for kills done on people I heal so that I actually have a reason to heal them !

If I go into a healing form that just heals I should get credit for keeping people alive who kill stuff including WvW fights.
It doesnt even need to be full credit just some small reward for keeping people from dieing.

I reckon that will be coming eventually, it shpuld also work for general support classes too.

As the guy who posted this up first back at launch day I’m putting this up again saying its been REVERTED!

I think this is how it should be in my opinion, in pvp Celest Avatar doesn’t heal well unless you use some defensive stats and healing power so for me its balanced, you wanted a healing class its here.

You want a hybrid that can off heal here it is, now unbroken in all its glory.

I shall now tour the HoT maps in my druid that has thus far been benched, I hope to see if it can compete to be my main for HoT.

The implementation of elite specs was bad, almost everything else is pretty good.

Instead of being instantly unlocked but requiring a massive amount of HP, they should have required a normal amount of HP and had the spec be unlocked by a story/adventure event. Would have made about 6,000 x more sense.

Totally agree with that idea of how it should be.

You can’t deny it, every complaint about “gating” this and “grindy” that simply boils down to “I want it sooner.”

How about you take a step back and realize you’re playing a kittening video game?

You are correct however I believe Elite specs should have been given sooner, that was partly my own point……………….

Am in the same predicament and I also find HOT to be really really grindy. The entire appeal of GW2 is that it was very casual-friendly, but HOT seems to have left that model behind and locked the interesting stuff behind a grindwall.

So grindy in fact I expect the next thing to come out will be to buy hero points for real $$$.

I don’t mind grind.
I just think making elite specs an hp grind/hunt was a big mistake when we have already a (much better) progression system in plaace in the form of masteries.

Hail fellow jungle adventurers.

Seeing the massive list of hot being good or bad i felt the need to write my own initial impressions of the expansion while comparing it to the many other mmo/expac launches that I’ve been apart of.

I am an mmo nerd, not of the mtn dew variety but more the Red bull/Irn bru type if you want specifics, eu and na difference yeah?
Been on gw2 off and on since head start, before hot i viewed gw2 as one of the better more successful mmos available on market, one of a few i return to often.

Now with hot starting up there have been many changes and additions.
So lets get started on a mini review.

The Good.

I’ve not seen this mentioned much but the launch was smooth as silk, i mean seriously no queues, no getting stuck or lost unable to play with who i want. Only technical issue i had was a reward box that kept crashing my client which is now fixed might i add.

I praise anet for such a smooth ride so many other mmos cause serious frustrarion here and i think many players take gw2s professional launch for granted.

Content. I love the new maps, before id hardly ever step into pve. Why?
Because it was too easy, brain dead easy infact. You simply could not lose.
Entering verdent brink for the first time gives you a shock to the system, the game forces you to focus and pay attention.
No more spamming auto attack and only paying attention to how many champions you can tag rather than whether there is a threat to your chars well being around.

For me this is a vast improvement over the original game. I believe i might continue into pve instead of only being here for the wvw.
Anybody complaining about hardness for me should stick to the original brain dead head bashing mind numbingly boring original game, orr awaits you.

The design of the maps is amazing. Im discovering cool stuff every play session and i have much much more to do yet.

The new musical score is fantastic, I had music disabled in vanilla, bit bored listening to most of those tunes since gw1 but these new ones which borrow themes from certain popular movies and such are just brilliant.

I actually really like the mastery system.
It adds a unique take on the levelling formula of the classic Rpg.
I can safely say the expansion would be very boring without the required gating the mastery system provides locking you from parts of the world.

For example, i found a way down into the depths to this apparent massive underwater tunnel area on the 3rd map. I only had glider masteries.. I was thinking this looks cool.
I venture out only to start getting destroyed by many hungry fish. Turns out i couldn’t continue.. I tried anyway and died hah but the thing is.. I WANT to go there EVEN MORE now.
Thats basic messing with human psychology and its great, adds to the game.

Gliding.
I used to play Aion over the years and gliding is nostalgic for me.. More so with my black feather angel wings!!! =) Being able to use them as a glider is amazing. Gliding its self i think is also helped by the awesome map design.

Desert borderlands is nice though i have to explore it more.
Guild halls are cool.

The Bad.

Hero point elite spec gating. Duh.

This was a big mistake on anets part in my opinion.
They gave everyone full access to Elite specs in beta then lock them behind a wall on official launch.
Im not saying players should have gotten them for free but if i was designing it, id have made the hp requirement the same as other specs while gating them behind a system of close to map completion of the first map only (or 50 wvw ranks not kitten 200). Giving players a fine taste of the new expansion without feeling FORCED to do it, to unlock something they had before even if it was beta.

For example i enjoy the game but i have jumped ahead of my normal progression through the maps and masteries looking for hps i can get without it being restricted.
That forced me to see things such as the forgotten city and the mursat like people before i did the story. To see clear spoilers of what will happen in the story when id have not gone there before otherwise.
I.e. I know some skritt ship is involved and gets blown up some place and what that entails possibly.

Id also be spending time on the actual game instead of hunting for silly hps like a mad man which i might add is very immersion breaking and boring.
I am at grandmaster now (work alot this week) its not hard for me, i dont mind hard, its tedious not hard. Stupid design choice.

Im sure it will be fixed but maps can get empty of players, that is obviously a big negative and counter to the point of the megaserver.

Lack of loot on some events is lame even when killing lots of hard champ mobs.

The ugly……

One of my characters is a ranger (playing mes in hot) and they got screwed in the rear this expansion…
First they are the only elite spec to be pure healing.

Healing could go well with the core of any class as long as it was controled, in bw3 druid was fun. A sort of medi guardian style of play, many were calling it just that.

Then they go and gut druids Asteral Force mechanics WITHOUT TELLING ANYONE.
Seriously.
They went and changed the Entire concept and left the players to discover their new shiny toy they have bought and looked forward to playing is infact something else, something clunky, not fun. Just kitten really.

There is lots of feedback on the ranger forum about it but to me the biggest downer is the silence from Anet.
Certain devs were involved ireneo(sp) and probably Roy and neither have said anything about it.

Druid is the only elite spec being made only useful in raid situations and crap everywhere else.

The silence to me is quite pathetic and it does look like office politics playing a part of ruining parts of the game.
Anet need to get a grip, explain and communicate.
Druid may have needed toned down but this absolute gutting of the class without communication is highly unprofessional.

Overall; day one, druid made me mad, still does.
But i like hot.
I think hp grind was a mistake but think hardness and masteries is great.
Maps are amazing and the future of the game looks bright!!

What makes you people think it wasn’t Irenio that messed up Druid? He was the one in charge.

Usually when something that rangers have gets gutted like this, it’s because Roy overrode Irenio. At least, that’s what appears to have happened for every example that comes readily to mind.

Why though?
Some internal politics to say look i did a better job than you because more people play herald than druid?

Seems utterly lame to kitten around customers like that.

OP really the white knighting is abit much everyone else here agrees druid currently sucks.

Staff is low damage and you are forced to it for AF and you can’t build AF for anything bar mega long boss fights.

Compared to the other elite specs it utterly sucks.

After surviving today’s work I get home to find this…

On a serious note I bet this is a bug caused by the 10s cd of AF.

Many other elite specs have problems as well, so I think we should stop the doom & gloom “OMG I’m so done, I’m rolling Revenant” and wait a couple of days to see what’s up.

By all means though, if this is intended the devs are leaving us (druid) out of pretty much every game mode intentionally.

Roy got quick on the mark to inform mesmers of their bug. Don’t see whats taking so long.

Anyways, if this is the way of things I won’t be playing my Ranger in HoT. Hell we’ll see if I even still play HoT. Engineer maybe?

This is my thoughts.
It was super huge for a stealth nerf, devs if yer reading some questions that you could answer if you can.

- is generating AF outside of combat by healing others or your pet with staff, self heal etc, is that not intended by the dev team.
Like do you want us to only generate af in fights?

-Whats the logic behind PVP starting with full AF.

- Is this a bug.

- Are you happy with the possibility of hybrid druids having ok damage and really high sustain compared to other classes, keep in mind we can only do one at a time.

-Is staff going to remain so horrible.

Druid is a fail.

7 pvp matches. Zero times druid even activated because of the incredibly slow and painful build time and severe rate of decay on AF.

I prepared my ranger for HoT – with this change it was completely wasted time. I’ll need to play a different profession.

Hate this nerf with a vengeance.

Saddest thing is that I was REALLY excited to do stealth openers with my team using Smoke Cloud -> Lunar Impact -> Leaving Celestial Form with Celestial Shadow. Now that can’t happen.

So many things can’t happen now man its really horrible to play i cant play ranger any more like this its the last straw!

I got work today in a couple of hours so ill check back to see if they say anything but man.. I just don’t know anymore.

They need to change Celestial Avatar so that you can keep the astral force outside of combat. Warrior adrenaline fills up way faster than Celestial Avatar does even with the new change. In PvP, most fights will be over before it’s used which is not a good thing.

Plus, they have tons of different ways of generating Adrenaline. Swapping weapons, passively while in combat, full charge from 1 skill, additional charge from crits, additional charge from shouts etc etc etc

I can’t think this is a bug because well… it would be something huge for people not to notice even if they were only testing in anet.

From going from a sort of ‘life’ shroud to a warriors adrenal bar..
I know most people would never bother with druid if they knew this from the start.
I am also glad I never invested in an acended staff.

Now I have to discover if there is any other class that suits me I never bothered much with other specs…

Really bummed out and was supposed to be hyped for launch, huge disappointment Anet.

I am really disheartened too i mean.. seriously it sucks alot now.

If i was doing this crap in beta i would have chose another class for sure now, I wasted time gathering HPs on ranger for this trash?

Troll heal is still the best heal for af gain but it seemed like it was nerfed, before it would fill most of a bar now its less than half, every weapon sucks at gaining AF now including staff though of course staff is better than others.

I no joke one shot a thief today who thought i was an easy target with a 14k maul to the face.

Sure legolas rangers suck but many rangers are about too that can melt thief, condi for sure.

As for stealth i think it should be permanent with little entry to it in combat.
Ive played gw2 since launch and i have also mes and thief alts i just disagree with gw2s version of stealth classes.

All that in combat stealth gain is bad for pvp.

Appropriate ways.
What exactly should the players do? Sit in a circle and hold hands? People here have been dumped on for long enough.

Instead of asking what the players can do or that we should show restraint, it should be the devs not the players showing us what they are going to do to appease their player base, a specific part of it that rightly feels neglected and sees many times over different treatment from other ‘pro player’ classes.

Its up to Anet to placete this.
If they don’t let it burn I say.

Im tired daily of some different elitist prick laughing and insulting my class choice due to the lack of simple support from anet.

After messing around with this build most of the day in wvw and pve i simply… Can not understand this knee-jerk hotfix?
Did a dev mis calculate and this ‘mess’ had to be fixed?

I ask because other classes are far more powerful in pve and wvw environments.
Infact daily im getting LAUGHED at for playing my stupid ranger or simply excluded.

Might stacking is easy for many other classes yet we are limited after a day.

A skill that made you think ‘use for burst or save for survival’ got gutted to its same situation before and can only really stack swiftness now (lol)

I don’t get this when you have pu mesmers rocking blind AND ageis on stealth while being able to literally one shot most non bunker specs at the same time. Or simply condi spam.

Pve wise its known ranger is a joke along with necro. A quickness stacking build could have been the classes niche.

My feedback is; you over nerf a fun yet obviously powerful spec in less than a day when other classes run around as tiny gods for months before being looked at.
How do you expect us to react when we know that??

What I don’t understand with HoT is they are brining this new feature of new specialisations.. why did they not make them more appealing?

They could have added -in my opinion- the bad weapons such as warhorn, torch, shield afterwords which they said they were planing on doing (adding more specs later).

For me it was bad marketing to add the crappy weapons first, I mean there was all this hype waiting for them to unveil the new weapons each class would finaly get after 3 years and lo behold its boring and in short a disappointment.

I am guessing that new specs which will come won’t cost any ‘extra’ as in a new expansion cost or what not so why?
Is it to renew interest in the game in around 6 months after HoT
? Adding the bad weapons then would have done the same thing to people who already owned HoT.
Instead you have people like me wondering if I should even buy it.

I bought and played the LS;S2 but it was a side thing, a distraction as my main game is WVW roaming and raiding.
I hear the desert borderland you get with the base game so from a wvw perspective why should I buy HoT outside of wanting to play a certain specialisation?

I read a dev post that NOBODY playing only wvw while that may be true as I do Wpve maybe once every 2 weeks to pass time listening to music if nothing is going on in wvw I do it in cursed shore mainly I don’t even do the new chest train maps (yawn).

I am sure a new farm zone will come with HoT but I don’t really care about it.
It’s about as important to me as the LS;S3 which is – not very.
I could watch LS:S3 on Youtube if I wanted to know about the lore.

I am just confused right now.
Maybe the expansion was not aimed at the type of player I represent unless I find one of the specs appealing?

I am mainly a wvw player with a tiny bit of wpve on the side and will probably try raids if my guild is interested though i really dont care much for them.

My main is a mesmer and i am currently playing domi/duel/inspiration. Chrono if i took it only nerfs my build, it adds the gimmick of the conti split but i feel its not worth sacrificing one of my current specs for it.
Shield seems lame and id prefer the on demand stealth of torch any day.

I used to also play thief but do not like its current state of hope you gank some one or be killed by a light breeze.
Daredevil not only plays boring (evades while i was dd) the aesthetics of it simply don’t appeal to me… Infact its a huge turn off and my thief is currently benched.

Guardian bow sounds interesting yet the way its currently implemented i dont see why id ever play it long term.

That is all my 80 chars i have and the rest of the new specs dont appeal to me or make me think OMG I MUST LVL THAT! (sooo disappointed with warhorn ele)
Sooo atm i still haven’t bought Hot… my plan was to wait to get hyped by something new i could play.
Gs or Rifle thief… Dual pistol or lb mesmer, sword/dagger ele, halberd warrior.

None of that came and the hype never started for me.

I am just wondering if any others feel like i do and are still contemplating whether to upgrade hot?
If so ehat is your thoughts on that.

Tldr; specs are kinda lame for me personally and as a wvwer im not sure what the point of hot is.

S/P is one of the higest DPS builds thief has.
Alot use d/d because it comes out slightly ahead on single target however for aoe and its not so bad single too s/p is amazing.
The evade spam is also quite nice.

Signet heal and IP and you never die in pve.

I play thief.
As a roamer that is fine.

If i want to help my raid guild? not really.
They run by meta and anybody playing something else is sidelined and basically asked to tag along.

It is not very motivated that because your class choice was not Ele, Warrior, Guardian or Necro that you have no real place in the group.
Of my guild the few people that refuse to go meta class like me make a joke out of it each time we end up together in the same ‘reject’ group.

All I hear on TS is NECRO BOMBS NECRO BOMBS, PUT STATIC STATIC STATIC.
WARRIOR/GUARDIAN TRAIN DODGE LEFT/RIGHT.

My group is all but forgotten about, it’s more of a statistic than anything else.

Siege is the best aoe for situations that are not moving but in zerg vs zerg warfare an ele still has a place as most zerg battles at least in t1 eu take place outside of the range of arrowcarts.

Low dmg ? Kinda lost about this...

Stacking stealth.

D/p can drop smoke field and leap through it 3x for 3x stacks of stealth.
D/D in wvw can cloak and dagger constantly off of static mobs and enemy keep walls.
You can drop refuge to regen initiative and start the cycle again , you can also use the utility smoke field and leap through that 6+ times as it lasts a while.

You kinda need to have 3 in shadow arts to pull it off easier though.

I mainly d/d but i switch builds quite often and one of them I run is p/p AoE zerg dps build with 2/6/0/0/6 and I agree it is a brilliant fun build to play in large groups!

Take invigorating precision and the signet heal and you can completely counter taking retaliation damage from such multiple sources.
For me its one of the higher multi target RANGED builds you can do in wvw.
While also being quite good at sniping squishies backline.

One gripe with your picture there however.. you have 20k hp… lol. I assume most of that comes from your buffs?
Without buffs how does your stat spread look?

If it leans too much into defensive stats your dps can only be hurt for it I have two sets of gear I go with, if I know im going to take more hits i stick on some soldiers with defensive runes otherwise im zerker with scholar and with the zerker you can ‘usually’ survive quite good with this set up as you are after all a ranged build and with peoples idea of following the commander people coming after you alone is not such a big deal normally if you can see a zerg and how it moves and avoid the train.
edit- il add in when I switch some of my gear to soldiers the dps drop is noticeable even with just losing 10% crit/ferocity.

Anyway I also like the build, I don’t run it 24/7 because it’s not good at 1v1 and I roam alot too so yeah but I do enjoy p/p and I am looking forward to sniping with a rifle if after all that is our specialisation at launch of hot!
It might even end up being a decent ranged build p/p and Rifle.

I prefer pvp, well wvw dont like the spvp community much..
However i dabble in pve often and i understand why people enjoy it.

Saying something as ignorant as pvp is where one tests them selves.
Or in otherwords pve is AI and easy don’t waste your time.
Is quite presumptuous and stupid at the same time, considering people play games for enjoyment.

I like me some p/p sometimes too!

Put at least 4 into the last line to get ricochet and it becomes one great Aoe.

Combine that with Invigorating precision from critical strikes and the healing signet and you have great survival too.

For pve a decent build is 2/6/0/0/6 with pistols.
Not the highest dps but you wont really die.

For you its simple.
Ele.

Ele is top of dps along with thief however ele can aoe alot better to boot with the bonus of better group support.

Ele has one of the best 1v1 1vX pvp builds in the game.

Ele is required for the wvw zerg meta atm. Static field is a great stun.

Im also thinking of lvling one as an alt, they seem pretty fun.

I started as a mesmer at launch, made a thief for Spvp then too, quit, came back a few months ago and now lvld that thief and main it as I hate mesmer now.

You are doing something horribly wrong if all you can do in wvw (your screenshot) is 10k total.

With mostly exotics 1/2 ascended laurel pices I can attack some one mug, cnd for 6k and backstab for 12k.
That is more than what you are saying.
Heavy armor wearers means toughness stacker which form the front lines of zergs, no you should NOT be able to one shot him but if you think any of them are going to pull out a rifle and do 15k crits you are very mistaken.

The guy doing 15k crits is a juicy target very susceptible to the thief’s general one hit combo.

I could stack my thief out to be harder to kill as well. I’d not longer do any meaningful damage but id easily survive a hit from that zerker rifle warrior.

Stop being mad about getting one hit.
If you are playing zerker thief it your job but its also your job to see things like that coming.
I bet you don’t cry when another thief picks you out as an easy target and does the same to you.

I was in a zerg the other day with my guild and some randoms in WvW.

Everyone was told to team up acording to the current meta.
A team of Eles.
A team of Guards/warriors/necro.
Ranged/rest.

I ended up leading the rest and out of say 40 odd people there was me and one other guy in my team an engi.

Every single other person was an ele/war/guard/necro.

I was disgusted to say the least.

Knowing my build infact works quite well for zergs too and watching all these lemmings made me abit angry.
People should play what they like I agree but it seems most of the player base does not think this way and levels up an alt of every class to play the meta in which ever situation.
Very very sad.

I like my thief and I change its build to make it work in all situations in which I play it.

Zerker warrior.
He abandons all defence for that type of damage.

As a zerker theif it would not be so hard to cnd,mug,backstab him to practically one shot him too.

Why should we be the only class able to do that.
Able to do that from stealth too.

At least when you see a warrior get on his knee you can dodge that one shot and evade most of his damage.

That is probably the reason you do not see too many of them around either.

It always irritates me when people complain about getting gibbed when that is exactly what they try to do as well.

With PVE community and (mostly) wvw community I agree.

However the Spvp community is as bad as any other community I have come across.
I have managed to mitigate this personaly though I only use Spvp to test builds and sometimes other classes that I dont play to get an understanding of them.

If I encounter any toxicity I block said people and leave the match. Simple.
I imagine if competitive arena type stuff was your main thing it would be a problem though.

For me though its great I can avoid most of it and my main gameplay types wvw and pve are fine.
