There are no files outside the game; either they are stored on the server or, like in GW1, they are part of the monolithic DAT file.

I have dynamic IP, too. It changes every so often; last time was 24th. :/ Any way to change dynamic to static? I used to know this but I forget now…

EDIT: Found out how to do this. You just need to set a static IP yourself in IPv4 settings. Just google Dynamic To Static IP Win7 and you’ll get all the details. It’s really simple.

Your private IP address has nothing to do with this; it uses your public address and authorises the network, not just the IP, so unless your dynamic IP is changing networks (happens on rare occasion when ISP is reconfiguring), you shouldn’t get pestered every IP change.

If, after all that, the mechanism is still failing, check to see if Anet is reading your subnet properly (I don’t have any of my mails, so I don’t know if it mentions the subnet mask or network range).

Clear directives are essential; however, legislation can’t replace good judgement (that’s how we end up with all those silly laws and warning labels). The more you impose Anet take a stance, the more likely they will just make it easy and make the policy, “No third-party software”.

What is Anet’s position currently? Don’t automate gameplay and don’t use game mechanics in a manner not intended. AA doesn’t fall under this. Using Razer/nostromo/Logitech HID software or AHK/bot software or even no software to AFK farm events/karma does fall under this.

I don’t plan on, and really so far never have been, getting smacked in the face with blunt weapons, so condition damage is my primary concern, which means water points in water with points in it and after that, some points in water.

Having that, I can’t see putting more points into earth since I’m not seeing any practical benefit to survivability and no increase in damage or utility.

I wonder if the other classes feel so limited in choices..?

I am speaking purely of dungeons since PvE is /faceroll and I don’t care to s/tPvP (and if I did, ele wouldn’t be my first choice).

hehe I tried scepter/focus/daggers in dungeons and that sucked.

Staff in PvE is painful (kill rate is usually less than respawn rate) and I can’t do it solo in some of the personal story.

If I can go ahead and get an out-of-combat weapon switch, that would be greeeeeeeat.

I don’t know that there really is a focus and I believe that’s the point; I don’t see ele as a mage/damage but more like a shaman, master-of-none gap-filler, support: little damage, some DoTs, some HoTs, some CC, and a 60-sec tank.

Also, as there seems to be many tech savvys here, what would you OC the i5 to? I’ve heard 4.0 is stable for most people. Will this give a boost in GW perfs or is OCing processors still not helping?

OC always helps. Ivy, however, generally doesn’t OC as well as Sandy but I would start at 4.77 (heh…nostalgic) and run diags from there. Don’t guess: prove your hardware’s stability before installing the “real” build with IBT, Heaven, Prime95, etc.

Personally, I keep to stock voltages as I like the power (heat) savings and the increase in voltage (heat) wasn’t worth the small gain and risk of instability popping up later. Finally, you don’t have to disable power-saving features (SpeedStep, C1E) to OC SB/Ivy.

Low FPS - [merged]

No quote button so here are responses to the prior several posts:

- DirectX is an API, not an engine and is irrelevant. Besides, DX10 didn’t offer much and was slower than 9 and 11.x brings us tessellation, which very few games have anyway. Additionally, DX9-based games in 2004 could still crush hardware years after that (one could say to Oblivion even).

- Your Core2Duo can’t feed your GTX560Ti fast enough; they are mismatched and the CPU will certainly bottleneck—not because of Anet’s programming—but because it’s an old CPU. If any part is in the same class as the minimum requirements, you will get minimum performance. Such has been the way of PC gaming for a couple of decades now. “Minimum requirements” means the program will run, not give you a pleasant experience. Anet should state recommended hardware.

- I’ve never had CPU or GPU pegged in WvWvW (and occasional PvE areas) when my FPS dropped to 30, so better hardware won’t resolve this particular issue (rebalnz documented this as well). Before you upgrade/troubleshoot/blame Anet, analyse your system to isolate the cause. (If your vehicle were to suddenly stop/not run correctly, I hope you would at least look at the dashboard for indicators first.)

- PCIe2 vs 3 is negligible and only comes into play when loading textures. To check your bus interface, your GPU has to be busy to use 2.x/3.x modes (1.x=power saving)

- Black Citadel is rough, even more so than LA with a bunch of people in it. Depending on your in-game and driver settings (turn off reflections, drop shadows some), I doubt anything short of tri-SLI could render it smoothly; it is hardly representative of the game’s performance as a whole and you never, ever form a conclusion with one data point.

… I’m sure many of us thought of doing that way before you even had the slightest clue something like that could ever be done to a pc.

… and its not wise to assume so.

I’ve been playing/programming/fixing/building PCs since they were invented in 1981. You were right in that assumptions aren’t wise.

I’m sure many would appreciate the help, but some of us are wayyy ahead of the game. Not all people are clueless or computer illiterate you know… and its not wise to assume so. And some people post for very valid and legitimate reasons.

I never said any were; I have only said that client-side troubleshooting efforts did not occur and/or weren’t presented (in any Mx, if it isn’t documented, it didn’t happen).

If so many think Anet must do something then actionable facts must be presented, which isn’t happening by the majority. Help Anet help you.

There is an issue where FPS drops but CPU & GPU utilisation aren’t anywhere near max but Anet isn’t getting a clear picture of when/how often it happens because people are presenting emotion rather than data.

Has anyone looked at the point-tally interval? Every 15 mins seemed right for a 24H match but how does it impact a 7-day match? Scaling it proportionally would increment points every 1 hour, 45 minutes; what impact would 1- or 2-hour intervals have?

My impression is that whoever takes the initiative right after the reset trounces the other two opponents for the duration; increasing the interval may lessen the lopsidedness without adding complexity or punitive game mechanics.

No, it doesn’t; that is still an assumption. What will prove a CPU-bottle-neck is something showing your CPU is fully utilised and your GPU isn’t. GW2 can fully tax both.

However, my WvWvW drops to 30 FPS were not due to hardware as neither the CPU nor the GPU were anywhere near full load (55% and 25-50% generally). I’ve had this occasionally happen in normal PvE.

Only if life was that simple rolo, most of us still hanging around have ran all those scans, tests, and updates and its still occurring lol.

I’m not seeing that; I am seeing a whole lot of waiting around for Anet to do something when there’s still plenty to do client-side, beginning with a DXdiag dump.

More basics:
- SFC /SCANNOW
- Reinstall DirectX from Microsoft downloads
- Deleting \My Documents\Guild Wars 2 folder and \Program Files\Guild Wars 2 folders before reinstalling

Relating to this topic, for me these problems started with the last (25/9) patch. I did almost everything humanly possible to locate the core of file corruption (repair, reinstall, update drivers (btw. gtx 560 ti), memtest, disk check (both with 0 errors passes, system restore to the point the game was running smoothly etc.)) and I am still getting crashes every +- 10 minutes into the game. I can play any other (either online or offline) game with no problem at all, so I have started to believe that the problem with the file corruption is based solely in GW2.

It crashes but what does it report? Is GW2 process halting or are you getting BSODs?
What other games do you play and do they tax hardware as much? What are your temps and loads?

Will a $3000 Graphics Card lag in WvW?

When my FPS drops below 60, it isn’t my video card or my CPU as neither of them are anywhere near maxed when it happens (last time, today, during WvWvW, GPU was 25%, CPUs, ~55%—I monitor them real-time on Logitech displays). Throwing more hardware at the problem won’t solve anything.

Which card[s]? Rather than $3k on a workstation card, $2k on two GTX 690s; otherwise, the biggest nVidia card you’re willing to pay for—assuming your platform (which you haven’t listed) is adequate.

Alright I have a near fool proof way to stop bots. If a person gets 2 or more reports saying they are a bot then force that person to answer an in game captcha to keep playing and if they pass they just go on and if not they get temp banned until its investigated.

That is a “guilty until proven innocent” mentality that will alienate players. If you don’t believe that, look at the reaction to diminished returns. Besides, you don’t think such a system would be abused for nefarious purposes (PvP/WvW)?

I’ll do one captcha at account creation, no more.

Another poster (which I responded to….hope this isn’t considered cross posting), mentioned a captcha system of some sort. While I really hate captchas, I’d still consider it the lesser of the two evils. I could certainly tolerate one an hour or so, especially if they were only triggered by someone reporting the suspected person as a bot.

Oh, nonononono I’ll play another game before justifying myself in such a manner. There are other means to deal with bots without harassing law-abiding players.

Bots indirectly impact my game-play; captcha would directly impact it.

I just started doing dungeons, so I acknowledge I’ve yet to learn more than I know. My experience so far:

- How the group prepares and plays is most significant; if they play dungeons like PvE, it won’t be fun
- If you can, bring a guardian (yes, tank)
- Eles have a broad skill-set—“…master of none”—and I can see the impact I have on the group, meeting needs as they appear: CC, healing, damage, buffs, combo fields
— This, naturally, makes the ele player’s skill more significant
- I have a hard time not putting 20-30 points in water; the vitality with intrinsic healing seem indispensable (sure, you can use earth instead but that’s only if you plan on going toe-to-toe with foes, which is futile, especially with a smaller health pool)
- Likewise, I have a hard time not putting 15-30 points in arcana to have all my skills available when I need them
- I am using Traveler’s gear and MF runes (+pow/prec), whch rounds out my damage a bit, which is nice for 10 air/30 water/30 arcana. I pretty much use the Myagi defence: “the best defence is not to be there” (so, yes, I use a staff).

There are threat tables in the AI as explained in the Anet blogs. It isn’t too dissimilar from any other MMO, just with tighter tolerances. I would add that it seems there is a bit of randomness thrown into it, lest anyone get too comfy standing still.

Your thief opening with mad damage will get killed.
My (ele) damage AoE opener will get me killed.
Your guardian out in front playing the tank role will keep things more controlled and everyone alive.

The trinity is here; it’s just not so rigidly defined or narrowly filled.

I really wouldn’t worry about it; just play normally and you’ll both out-level the content by far anyway, so it really doesn’t matter. When will condition damage build be viable on PvE?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Rolo.9248

Rolo.9248

Who’s “we”?

Personally, I won’t profess to know more about game mechanics/balance than Anet, so I’ll assume and with reason that 25-stack limit is there for balance and variety. If we could stack 250 bleeds, there’s be little reason to use anything else. Additionally, you are aware that condition damage bypasses armour, yes?

Burning and poison stack in duration—which can only go until the target(s) is/are dead—so they aren’t “crippled by this”. It’s nice that bleeding doesn’t stack in duration like the other two.

Besides, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a build that is not viable in PvE; if your struggling, this isn’t the reason why.

Finally, you have a variety of abilities at your disposal; focusing on bleed damage means you aren’t exploiting those other capabilities—i.e. How many stacks of vulnerability are you keeping on the boss? That would increase DPS far more than more bleed stacks since it effectively gives everyone increased damage (including those bleed stacks).

How to: get the most from your Nvidia GPU, high end PC and GW2

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Rolo.9248

Rolo.9248

The purpose of this thread is to suggest ways to improve GW2 performance on high end PCs without getting your GPU or CPU so hot you can fry an egg on it.

If it isn’t overclocked, it isn’t “high-end”; it is mid-range at best. Intel sells and advertises CPUs for the purpose of overclocking (that’s what K and X models are for). This isn’t apocryphal: Intel provides the information and the tools to overclock.

Overclocking improves GW2 performance directly and is therefore directly on-topic; your fear-mongering isn’t. Improper or extreme overclocking can damage components; proper overclocking will not, as it still keeps components within manufacturer’s specifications. I don’t know how that can be more clear.

Besides, I just read a thread where a guy’s new Alienware locks up running GW2. What is Anet going to say if he were to open a ticket? Disable overclocking as it comes “factory” overclocked. I don’t know why some think “factory” overclocking is any different than individual overclocking: they are the same components but the difference will be that the personally-invested individual can spend more time on it and get better, more solid results.

Using the “factory” logic, I personally build and sell high-end PCs (since 1991, for individuals and small businesses, schools) and every single one of them is overclocked. Is my having ZERO hardware failures attributed to my being a so-called “factory” or is it that I only pick quality components and that I know what I am doing?

I neither appreciate the assumption that I didn’t give your post adequate thought nor the misrepresentation of what I said; look at my other posts and you’ll see that’s not my nature (especially since there are dozens of duplicate threads). Based on the presented facts, I responded with actionable items to further troubleshoot.

..but I don’t think you’re taking in to account that I can go days (doing very high amounts of activity in conjunction with GW2) and not experience this.

There’s nothing here to account for since I haven’t seen comparable activities or measurements. Maxing Intel Burn Test, Prime95, and Unigene concurrently for an hour or so without flaw would validate the hardware. Otherwise, GW2 is the most demanding app that I can see.

It is by all accounts…and incredibly random event. This would suggest something other than overheating/overload because the consistency is not there.

There are far too many variables to rely on consistency; you’ll have to create a controlled test to observe.

What is consistent throughout 31 years of PC Mx is that spontaneous reboots are Dove purely (99.44%) caused by insufficient/failed power.

GPU: As much as you can afford. Personally, I never liked ATI as every one I’ve had was poor by comparison. GTX x60Tis are a good value.

If you want gaming horsepower, get the right tool for the job rather than wasting money/effort on souping up a turtle: build a desktop or, if that isn’t possible, get a gaming laptop (more pricey but if you just don’t have the space…)

Nontheless, turning up VOLTAGE without turning up CLOCK is nonsense, since you’re just overheating your video card, as more current is flowing into it, without using it.

It isn’t nonsense: increasing voltage makes a cleaner wave-shape; if the current clock is a little too much to be 100% reliable, an increase in voltage can fix that.

Additionally, voltage and current are two separate things. Voltage increase does increase thermal output but not necessarily overheating it, which depends on the cooler attached to it.

bunch of crap. There is no reason thinking that hardware designers are forcing an insufficient voltage for their hardware. Nontheless, turning on voltage does increase the current flowing as stated by OHM’s LAW: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohm's_law

And manufacturers never have recalls and the Intel Pentium .99999999 was flawless.

I never said voltage and current aren’t related, only that they are two different things. Does it matter why increasing voltage increases thermal output? No; it just does and must be dealt with—we aren’t in disagreement on this point.

I do disagree that increasing voltage only increases thermal output with no other effect.

Ohm’s law isn’t really relevant here as it’s a very tiny part of the whole: increasing frequency increases power consumption (cf. The Art of Electronics, p. 970) and that’s what’s relevant, not Ohm’s law (your CPU is ~1 billion transistors, not 1 billion resistors) Why do you think your CPU lowers power when it lowers its frequency (Intel’s SpeedStep http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpeedStep )?

The relevant formula here is P=CV^2f: Power consumed equals capacitance times voltage squared times frequency. Note how current is not part of this equation.

The length of time a transistor in a digital circuit delays an electronic signal depends on its size, fabrication technology, layout, temperature, and operating voltage. The highest achievable clock rate of a circuit depends on this delay and the number of logic levels that a signal has to traverse in a single clock period. The latter number is fixed (and dependent on the processor’s architecture). So, for overclocking, we focus on how a transistor’s latency is affected by its supply voltage. A higher supply voltage can shorten the delay, but will also raise the transistor’s power consumption. Cranking up the clock frequency also increases the dynamic power draw per time unit, and thus further raise the circuit’s power consumption, leading to a hotter chip.

cf. Tom’s Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ivy-bridge-overclocking-core-i7-3770k,3198.html

That is from an article explaining how Ivy Bridge has less OC headroom than Sandy Bridge. I wonder if the 600s have a similar pattern.

It’s OBVIOUS that the heat depends on the cooling system that is supporting the video adapter, but it’s also clear that increasing voltage will increase current, and increasing current will both increase heat and lower the hardware’s lifetime.

All of that is a red herring and doesn’t negate the above facts.
You’ll also have to show me how running hardware within manufacturer’s specifications lowers it’s lifetime (calling it ‘crap’ doesn’t [dis]prove anything).

So stop posting crap, please.

Personal attacks don’t make your point and undermines your credibility. I put time, thought, and effort into my posts; anything less is a disservice.
