You call crippling the early game abilities and putting them behind a level requirement a reward? Are you kidding me? Did you not learn from your China release!? How is locking story until your 10 levels up a reward? Or locking trading post, bank, and guilds behind a level requirement? You crippled your early game experience… great job!

Extremely upset… Just yesterday I was very excited about the update… now I’m extremely disappointed… I’m done with alts or any characters before level 40… you absolutely ruined the new character experience… for 2 years it was just fine, but now you messed it up… seriously great job!

Limited sales pretty much boost ANets income because people tend to buy things impulsively as soon as they see that there is a limited supply.

I keep seeing comments along these lines and it blows my mind! Do you people really think that
a.) This is the ONLY marketing strategy in the entire world, ever?!
b.) That it is ok to justify Anet being stingy / using a marketing strategy that arbitrarily punishes the vast majority of the player community as opposed to enhanced fun?!

Instead of people being sheep and parroting what they saw someone else say in another post somewhere, why don’t people think for a second “hey, yeah… this is a kind of crappy marketing system. After all, I often get disappointed that I cannot buy what I want on my own terms and when I am able.”

I am certain that Anet could sell things on the gem store in such a way that it benefits both the player community as well as their own bottom line.

Just because the impulse buy is a common practice does not mean it is the right strategy or the best strategy, it is simply one strategy of many and it is, in my opinion an underhanded strategy to use.

they might have a work around but i think it would take alot of work and time coz it would be like a rework or something.

…or they could just have you pick a new personal story with your new race and start over.

The personal stories are junk anyway. I am yet to finish mine (or even get half way) on any of my characters. The rewards are pathetic and its just not compelling, interesting or worth bothering with.
Meh, my opinion but I know I’m not alone in thinking this way.

I just don’t get what is wrong with you people who say stuff like this!

You realize you are basically shooting yourself in the foot by telling Anet you are happy to pay a ton for digital items?

How about demand that Anet supply us with affordable and fairly priced items across the cash shop.

You do realize, I hope, that there are many, many, many different strategies and marketing models that will make enough cash for Anet to run this game, don’t you?

I also don’t get the whole fixation on “trophy” status items, especially from the cash shop.
Having a “trophy” that all you had to do was drop money on, is not much of a trophy. The only thing you are proving is that you have money to burn. Woooo, good for you.

If you want to really show off, earn your shoulders (like how WoW epic shoulders used to mean something a number of seasons ago in PvP).

Even with that said, it’s a game so what does it really matter if the gear you have “means more” in some artificial abstract way than the gear someone else has.
I personally think the ascended gear looks like junk (and I know I’m not alone in thinking that), so I don’t even notice people who are wearing it. If I don’t notice, or if I’m not impressed by what they are wearing, then what kind of trophy is it really?

Again, it’s a game and we should ultimately all be able to wear what looks good to us without arbitrary limits and boundaries being placed on the potential skins we might wish to collect.

Black Lion Keys are a JOKE and a RIPOFF!

There are a number of quite detailed and interesting breakdowns of the drops and drop chances from Black Lion Chests, and the numbers are not in the favor of players. Anything that anyone might actually really want to have drop (like tickets and perma merchant, etc) have a terrible drop chance. I don’t remember the exact number, but its worse than 1 out of 1000 chests.

I think the gem store needs some changes.

The prices for some items are quite steep. Lowering the prices or giving people more gems for their money will not only help Anet to look less greedy but also give players the feeling of “oh well whats a few gems” when purchasing items. Players will feel like their money is going further and feel more willing to buy things from the gem store.

The Black Lions chests are underwhelming and the keys are over priced.

Most of the armor skins that have been put on the gem store have been relatively unimaginative. That aside, more new armor and weapon models/skins should be entering the game though game content or just as general drops and less through the gem store.

Some may bash it, but I think its worth considering adding features and content into the game that can also help the gem store grow. For example, player housing. This can offer horizontal progression to the game in allowing players to upgrade their homes and add new things through living story content as well as offer potential upgrade items and themes or wall paintings you find through out the game of concept art that can be purchased from the gem store. Armor displays and weapon racks are other ideas.

Service items are the best items to have in a gem store, however new hair styles, eye colors, faces or any other character creation options should actually be present when creating a new character and not just available through those packs. The actual game needs to be growing, not just the gem store. Players that have invested the time to level up a character they care about are going to buy the make over packs over re-rolling their character if they want any of the new options on their new character anyways.

Yes yes yes! All of this plus permanent (ie not time limited) items in the shop and other quality of life items like permanent toys, tonics and illusions, a race change makeover item and mounts.
So much potential that Anet just squanders by being greedy, stingy and having EA level (junk in other words) underhanded marketing strategies.

I agree, I think a race change item would be awesome.

I can imagine there being some issues with personal story completion percentages transferring between races, but I’m sure a work around can be found.
With that said, its not like the rewards for personal story are worth a kitten , so it really shouldn’t make that much difference if they just reset the story to the start.

So the results are +/- 118g 35s 2c in gold, 2335 Gems in items (assuming you have use for all the items I listed, since that’s personal.) which in 1 currency would be 4088 gems with a 4000 Gems investment, or 274g 96s 27c for a 270g investment. With the potentional of +50-150g if you wait patiently with selling the Ticket-Weaponskins.

Yeah, but all that stuff is useless XD (At least for me anyway). I’d rather buy a cool armor set or something with gems. Or a Bank tab, Or infinite tools. Or character slots. You know, things that actually matter!

A 4 gold gain (not counting speculation and waiting +/- a month) is pretty pathetic. I can make that in one circuit of Queensdale, harvesting junk.

Black Lion Keys are a HUGE JOKE!

The only worthwhile things that the chests drop (supposedly drop) have a less than 0.001% drop chance.

There are a number of Chest drop studies out there on the net. Check them out before you buy your next key. You will notice that the drop chances are absurdly low and maybe you will save some money and skip these stupid keys.

Anet needs to just open up the gem store and stop selling time-limited items.

I understand the impulse purchase marketing strategy, but it is just one possible strategy and there are so many better marketing strategies that don’t leave a sour taste or punish the player base.

Personally I find impulse-time-limited marketing distasteful and underhanded and I won’t support it.
If they open up the gem store, I will gladly purchase the stuff I want, but if Anet only offers the stuff I want in a time limited way then I can live without a new skin and there are other games that I play whose honest marketing strategies I am happy to support.

Some pretty good comments in here.

While I understand the marketing angle from Anets POV, it is just one of many possible marketing strategies and I think it is the most crappy strategy because it punishes the players rather than enhances fun. I can virtually guarantee that they would get regular sales at or above their current level if they opened up the gem shop so that everything was always available.

For example, I never, even in real life go for the impulse buy. I understand the psychology of it and I resist it because I think it is basically underhanded dirty tricks to make a buck. (which it is, common practice though it may be)

When I see Anet doing it, (or anyone) it sours my opinion of them because I know there are many, many other ways, more fair, straight up and respectable ways of marketing products, as opposed to underhanded psychological games.

Im very aware that my views are far from the norm, but I am also aware that I am not alone in thinking this way.

I hear what some of you are saying. GW2 Gem store may not be the absolute worst cash shop out there, but it is the worst I have ever seen in any MMO or online game I have ever played.

The best cash shop I have seen is fully open (items always available) with lots of variety of merchandise and fair prices. The toys, like transform, illusions and tonic-like items are all permanent (as they should be) and I don’t feel like I am getting ripped off by buying a limited use toy. The limited use items they do sell actually make sense being limited, like self resurrects and teleport items (which yeah, I know, GW2 has some of those too). I enjoy playing that game and I don’t feel bad about spending money in that cash shop because I don’t feel like someone is playing dirty psychological marketing games with me. It is transparent and I like that.

I have only bought a couple things (2 costumes during the first halloween and a couple sets of transmutation stones) from the gem store and all the things that I would spend money on (weapon skins or armor skins) are gated by stupid RNG or came out during periods where I was not playing. I have gems that have been sitting unspent for over a year and I’m not about to burn them just cuz they are sitting there unless there is something I actually want to buy.

I still stand by my original post, that Anet needs to stop being stingy and open up the shop.
Knock off the underhanded marketing, Anet, you only sully your reputation with that junk.

uhh, so you are suggesting that you create “Vision of the mists” at the mystic forge and sell it with a buy order and that is how you (at least one way) make your money?

I’ve never used the mystic forge before, seemed like a huge waste of time and mats to me tbh (pour in a ton of mats for … something? …maybe? What a crock of kittens)

So while your riddle of an answer prompted me to google that weapon, it did not totally answer my question in a way that is understandable to me, given my lack of experience with the mystic forge (loot toilet?)

The Gem store is so incredibly disappointing to me for a number of reasons.
Rather than list a large number of things that I dislike I will attempt to be constructive and offer suggestions for improvement.

1.) Make all gem store items permanently available so that people can purchase what they want when they want, and not be arbitrarily punished by being unable to play at a given time.

2.) Make more of the ‘Toy’ items permanent rather than charge based, or have a charge based version and a perma version at different price points.

3.) Lower the prices across the gem store by 20% – 25%. In comparison the the best ftp cash shop I have ever seen in a game (I deliberately do not mention which game, as people will focus on that and derail the topic of focus), GW2 prices are much too high, especially for one use items (and LOL keys, wtf Anet, really?).

4.) Round Gems to the dollar. I’m sick of being nickle and dimed paying $10.00 for 800 gems. Whats wrong with evening it off and making it $10.00 for 1000?

5.) Provide More content and more interesting content. More skins, more toys, make tonic transforms more interesting (add jump and emote animations at the very least and even add the ability to fight mobs while wearing an illusion), add fun RP props and heck, even add mounts.

There are so many neat things that could be sold on the Gem Store, but instead ANET chooses to overcharge for junk. I just don’t understand why?

Well, I cannot say if this game is losing too many players or too few.

The only thing I can say is, that in the last 1 1/2 years, this game has degenerated from the hope for the whole MMO genre to a generic asian grinder with a cash shop and crappy updates.

Do you blame the players for not logging in for this?

I pop my head in every six months or so to see if ANET has fixed this farcical travesty of what could have been a great game.

the combat auto-slow is in place to force players to use dodge.
Not only is this idiotic design, but dodge fails to even work with alarming frequency.

I cannot count the number of times I have dodged, read evade float up over my toon and STILL taken damage, been knocked flat or had some other negative effect applied to me EVEN THOUGH THE GAME TOLD ME I DODGED!

This is just more broken garbage that Anet has had a year to address yet has ignored.

all you people singing this refrain are making some huge assumptions. i put everything i have into my gameplay but its not enough.

When you get 1 shot, skill is irrelevant.
When you cannot kite, skill is irrelevant.
When your abilities are on CD, skill is irrelevant.
When Armor and Toughness count for nothing, skill is irrelevant.
When your dodge meter takes longer to refill than it takes the monster to run (faster than you ever can) you down, skill is irrelevant.

Maybe you people don’t mind dying all the time. Maybe to you that is part of the fun.
If that is so, I think you are all stupid.
Dying sucks. I do not enjoy it.

I really want to love GW2 and I just cannot love a game where I am supposed to be heroic and yet I feel like a sickly pauper with the durability of wet paper. It really, really stops my fun and makes me not want to come back.

Being 1 shot is the dumbest mechanic in every MMO, in every game, and yet GW2 is full to overflowing with that situation.

I think the solution must come in changes to a number of the core design concepts that Anet had when they first developed the game. The trouble is, im not certain they care about changing them.

You touched on many of the same frustrations I have felt so I won’t bother to type them again and I will simply say I agree with your post in its entirety.

no. by this point there are a bunch of details you have missed, and i dont expect you to read the entire thread.

my 80 is not in BiS gear. I die a lot, like ‘1 shot and 2 shot nothing i can do die a lot’ i don’t like it.

My lowbie toons that i want to explore dead zones with struggle with events.

I think something could be done to make the game more friendly to solo players and players not in BiS gear.

The end game zones keep coming up as examples everyone, myself included, use to illustrate various points. thats all.

no one plays in higher level areas because champions are harder than the lv 7 troll in queensdale… cant farm champs for loot bags if you can’t kill them in 13 seconds….

Granted orr champs are a guaranteed exotic loot bag…

this is certainly true and is part of my frustration. There is no incentive for people to play in other areas of the world, therefore if you want to experience other areas you end up doing so solo.

I am not 80 with max gear so I find it almost impossible to solo many events. This bums me out, so I am asking that Anet scale events a little bit further, especially in higher level zones so that they can be completed solo without dying over and over and over and over and over again.

I never said mounts were needed. I said there were a number of valid reasons why their addition would benefit the game.

As for nudging the devs, if you don’t speak up and let them know your feelings then how are they going to know what the community wants.

i don’t mind mounts as long as they stay on land, flying mounts are for both RPGers and game devs a nightmare. (they ruin the game’s immersion)

for GW2, i look at mounts the way i look at mounts in skyrim, they don’t have to be a problem as long as the game keeps players from simply ignoring enemies.
i can understand that you don’t want to wait for every single enemy but there are ways to keep it balanced, lotro has health on their horses and defiance has endurance on them.
ether by making them run slow when attacked or killed when attacked, there are ways to make mounts balanced.

i think that a speed of 40% is plenty given that they require a certain mastery, something like having 3 masteries.
1.) 20% speed for level 10+
2.) 30% speed for level 40+
3.) 40% speed for level 70+

it makes leveling have a use and keeps low levels in check.

Yeah, im not asking for flying mounts. Heck I know the game isnt built for that. I ran up over a hill i obviously wasnt supposed to be able to run over and I fell through the world.

What I am suggesting is standard +60% speed mounts. I supposed Anet could put in +100% epic mounts as well but I dont even care about that. Just SOMETHING that is meaningfully faster than what we have now!

Why act like a 2 year old and waste stuff that hurts your entire server over 2 or 3 kittens that ruined your day. :/

Prettymuch because I am tired of being kitten ed all over by elitist jerks because my gear is not BiS or because I don’t know precisely what to do or because i ask too many questions. So you know what. Now that I know this foolishness makes you clowns cry I’m adding it to my arsenal.

I hate to be that guy, but I think this is a skill issue and not a general gameplay issue. You said that if people want a challenge, they have their dungeons/legendaries. But what about the people who want a challenging solo experience? Whenever I change my gear/spec, the first thing I do is go practice in Orr. Like others have posted, even the veterans can be taken down solo with a little bit of finesse and caution not to pull the entire zone.

Nerfing this zone would kill a part of the game that is unique, and I personally don’t want to play a game where every zone is the same difficulty.

One final counterpoint is that nerfing the zone could have a drastic effect on the in game economy. If everyone can go to Orr and easy-mode farm mats, then that will affect the value of those mats on the broker.

If the zone is too challenging, stick to the easier zones until you get enough practice to manage in this one.

Firstly, I’m not strictly talking about nerfing Orr specifically. What I am talking about is an overall scaling of events throughout the game so that solo players can do events in dead zones.

Orr keeps coming up as an example, so I am using it as an example, but it is not the focus of my request, just one possible example of many.

Thank you for the clarification, I am glad you actually read the OP and were not just disagreeing with me to be an elitist, ‘hardcore’ snob. (not that you are, but that is the attitude I expect. Perhaps you are, who knows. You articulate yourself well so I will assume not.)

I can appreciate your argument that ‘fun’ is not the only consideration in terms of content popularity. You make a very valid point that most players would rather chase the proverbial carrot through miserable content than play content that is fun but that offers no tangible reward.
I do not count myself part of this group.

The desolation of Orr may very well be related to lack of incentives to play there, as you suggest, and not because the content is too difficult for most players.

I still maintain my position however that overworld mobs and events should scale better for solo players. Perhaps Anet could parse a power level checker on a player in the area and scale the content accordingly. I don’t know how they should go about doing it, I just know that I don’t bother going to Orr anymore because no matter how well I play, when I have exhausted my dodge bar and all my abilities are on cooldown and I am rooted, blinded, feared, dazed, poisoned and on fire, from TWO kitten mobs, death is guaranteed!

My complaint is not strictly limited to Orr either. This is a game about being a hero. I have never, not once felt like a hero in this game! I have constantly felt like a feeble, barely capable pauper with the durability of damp paper that can be forced into the down state by little more than a strong breeze. What is heroic about that?!
My first character to 80 was a thief, and no matter what build and gear I tried I just could not take on more than 1-2 mobs at a time. I tried full zerker DD burst. I tried Pistol condition build, I tried stealth and life drain toughness S/D build. I wasted so kitten much money on gear and respeccing it was ludicrous.

Every time it was the same. Out of dodge, covered with conditions, all abilities on cooldown, 2 shots later im dead. Terrible game IMO! Not fun!
I quit for the best part of a year.

Now I come back to see if anything has been improved. Nope! Not enough anyway. Yeah im a little stronger vs noob zone mobs. I can take on 2-3 mobs in Orr now. So what?! That is hardly a change worth commenting on.

Now I am leveling a Necro, and while much more durable than my thief I run into the same issue. When im out of dodge and my abilities are on CD I am as good as dead. So I last for one hit more, so what, that isnt enough time to get away, let alone kill a pile of mobs that have joined the fight. It is silly.

I can really see why most people are content to play in the lowbie zones. They are the only places where you can actually feel powerful.

It sucks. I want to enjoy this game but I just simply don’t.

Now, given that I have heard other people complaining about this stuff, and knowing that I am not alone in feeling this, I have decided to come here and share my experience until I get a response from Anet.

So, rather than just saying “No, you can’t have your fun too! Fun in this game is only for the hardcore elite!” Why don’t you instead try to find a solution that works both for people like you as well as for people like me.

I will have to remember this method of ‘helping’ my team next time I am told to “F Off Scrub” when I ask to join a party or ask where I can be of most help.

Maybe you elitist WVW D-bgs could learn a lesson from this and actually be friendly and helpful to players new to WVW for a change.

Daily - A love/hate relationship

I hate doing the daily but I have to do them. I’m an achievement point collector. The issue is now I spend far too much time chasing daily items rather than just playing the game. I spoke to a friend who also said they have the same issue.

It would be nice if they were changed to encourage more natural game play. Something like, you need 1000 points to complete the daily. Points are earned by completing different tasks…

PvE kill = 2
Dynamic Event = 30
Champion Slay = 50
Exp Dungeon = 200
World Boss = 150
Resource Node = 5
etc etc

A point system is superior in most every way.

What most devs fail to understand is players want the choice of how they spend their time left in their own hands. When devs force only X or only Y it breeds resentment that eventually erodes the enjoyment for the game and the players move on.

The only thing I think needs to be addressed on the open world is the respawn rates of monsters. In densely packed areas your progress is completely halted because it becomes impossible to solo large numbers of mobs without the original mobs respawning and joining back in the fight. Some kind of calculation should be done where if nobody is nearby and the zone is fairly empty then the respawn timer needs to be much much higher…maybe even 5 minutes or more.

Smart respawn timers I think would also go a long way towards making various areas more solo friendly.

this is my problem with temples, i was doing really well soloing the grenth temple but the respawns are around 10 seconds, 20 at most.
i died because of that, had the respawns kept it’s distance i would’ve saved a temple all on my own for the first time.

I have heard many people complaining about things like this and I have experienced similar situations.

I just don’t understand this obsession with making everything virtually impossible to do solo. I get that it is an MMO but playing with a group of people all the time is utterly unrealistic. There are times when players just want to play solo, and there are players who prefer mostly solo play.

It would be trivial for Anet to tune the events, mobs, respawns and other content to be more forgiving to casual or solo players! I just don’t understand why they won’t do it?!

ok I guess thats not totally fair, they have done a fair amount over the year, but one cannot argue the fact that they could do much better about telling the community what they have in the pipeline.

Orr is just one example of the issues with end game zones.
These zones were clearly built and tuned with a zerg of players in mind. Playing in them solo or with only a couple of people these zones can be a nightmare.

Love this idea!
Player housing is fantastic. Furniture crafting and decorating keep people playing MMOs long past their shelf life. Just look at EQ2. There are still thriving communities there dedicated to decorating alone.

OP you may want to check your gear/traits. Going max power/dps is great until you get to the final zones and then its time to invest in survival stats/traits. Aside from the group events, I think Orr is great solo content because it is a challenge. You can’t go beast mode in it like the lower level zones, but if you take your time, it’s really not any more difficult than it should be.

More difficult than it should be? More difficult than it should be for who? For people in best in slot gear? For hardcore min / max players?

Winning fights in end game zones seems more based on luck or fantastic gear than skill.
Running a vit / toughness build I get smoked more than I win out in endgame zones. There are so many mobs, so close together that it is almost impossible to fight just one of them at a time.
The damage they can put out to me in a given period is not only greater than the damage I can put out to them but it takes everything I have, every fight to kill one or two mobs. If I am unlucky, which I always am, and another runs to join in I am toast.

I don’t understand what it is about challenge that so many of you people trumpet. You have dungeons and legendary grinding for all your challenge needs, to prove how leet you are. Why does the rest of the population need to be punished because you want to feel special?

If the majority of players had a fun time in the endgame zones, then more of them would be playing in them. This is just not the case. It has been my experience that the end game zones are deserted save one or two people.

I think my argument is reasonable and supported by evidence.
The game could use some tuning to the way events and mobs scale so that casual (read that as anyone NOT wearing full Best-In-Slot gear) players can have a hope of enjoying the content of all the zones in their own time and solo if necessary.

This argument that people have spent gold on dye therefore you cannot make Dye account bound is ridiculous!

All of your transactions on the TP are tracked by Anet. It would be trivial for them to refund past dye purchases.

There is no valid argument against account bound dye.
The only other argument to be made is in favor of the greed of dye sellers.

I vote for the enjoyment of the majority of players in having account bound dye over the enjoyment of a few player who gouge dye prices and line their pockets at present.

As to the rest of your comment, I don’t know what server you are on, but on my server there are 2 places that I see regularly heavily populated. Lions Arch for trash talking and kitten measuring via legendaries, and Queensdale for champ farming for monthlies.

It is far past time that anet released mounts for this game.
So the game has waypoints, so what! They are not mutually exclusive concepts. You can have mounts AND waypoints just fine. Besides anet loves to give people the legendary carrots to chase, so they can make legendary mount skins.

I have to disagree with you. You cannot argue that the events were tuned for zergs. I guess you could until we defined ‘zergs’. I’m talking about 10+ people.

I am also sad that all the zones between starter and Frostgorge are deserted, which is why I post this.

What I am requesting is that they fix the tuning / scaling / whatever you want to call it so that areas and events can be enjoyed by solo players.

Yes I can already solo individual mobs, the problem comes when mobs are close together and the mobile nature of fights means that I inevitably get too close to other mobs and draw them into the fight.

In the higher level zones, the mobs are strong enough that one or two is a challenge if you arent in max gear (which im not). More than 2 mobs is a trip to the waypoint.

This sucks and isnt fun.

Now I am making an assumption that if I am not having fun, clearly all the other people who are NOT HERE were not having fun either.

If it was fun, people would be playing it!

You cannot refute that simple, basic and plainly obvious argument.

Dueling doesn’t matter to them. You are still playing the game aren’t you?
As long as you are still playing, you are being tempted to buy gems.
Buying Gems is their business model. Its how they keep the game profitable. As long as people are playing there are things they wont mind dropping a couple bucks for gems on.

Did you ever notice that they spend tons of time and effort tweaking the gem store and adding things to the game that make you keep going back to the gem store?

If you said no, you are not paying attention.

Infinite Continue Coin comes to mind immediately. 600 gems for a temporary item?! LMFAO. You have got to be stupid to buy that. Yea, its temporary cuz its only good while the event is on during September.

Mounts are not to replace waypoints! They are for looking awesome. I would live to see horses introduced.

I know how you feel buddy, even with the 24/7 speed buff on ele (capped 33%). I still feel so slow. Anet should know since they are also developing another mmo “Blade and Soul” and you can run and roam really fast in that game.

Clearly a couple people get it.

The 25% speed boost is pathetic, it just doesn’t cut it. Furthermore I am sick of losing so much money using the kitten Waypoints. Why do they even need to have a fee? To me that is just adding insult to injury!

Add mounts, its not that hard and it adds a lot of flavor and enjoyment to the game.
Giving players options makes happy players. Happy players don’t go looking for better games to play.

I’ve not played GW2 for a year, and after only 2 days I am remember why I uninstalled it in the first place. Taking ages to get anywhere or being charged a cheap-kitten fee is just one of a pile of things that aggravate me about this game.
