I’ve mained a guardian for over 500 hours now, and in all honesty I feel I’ve gotten very good at it. I started out dungeons using strifey’s rather famous altruistic healing build, it got me on the right track, from there on I just kept changing the build until I set one up purely based on whatever I felt would provide me with the most fun.
To my astonishment, I played pvp after all this with the exact same build and I was doing very well for a couple of days straight. Top stats in nearly every match I took part in. Now a I’m not claiming I’m superior to anyone, I just have a lot of hours in and this granted me some good experience and the ability to make good judgements throughout the fights I get into.
So, because my build is not a pvp cookie cutter build, and not really optimized for anything other than what I enjoy, I figured “I got this game down man, and thieves look fun as hell”. So I rolled a thief and played PVE for 25 hours roughly, and decided I have a feel for this sneaky little guy by now, let’s give it a shot in PVP.
Now despite doing well on the guardian, I am absolutely terrible at the thief. Literally getting the lowest scores in nearly every match. I don’t know if people just really know how to counter thieves by now, but it feels like I get my heal interrupted, my sneak attacks I get knocked back, and when we’re just melee’ing it out up close I just about always lose. I stuck it out for hours yesterday but it feels like I’ve made no progress.
So after giving it my all and failing lol, here I am. If anyone has any tips or a good starter bud to practice with for this class, I’m all ears.
Personally I think a big problem is that the game doesn’t teach the combos to players anywhere. They need to make some easy events that can only be done by combos to get the players to see what’s possible, because right now no one will figure it out unless they read on the wiki, and then it’s still rather hard to get random people to to try and learn it.
what a lot of people miss seems to be that classes can work VERY WELL together if they just understood the mechanics a bit better. Combo fields and finishers can create some amazing gameplay if folks are just willing to learn and work together. For example your ele can put down a water field and then your guardian can do hammer bash in it, then your mesmer her use her stealth skill in it and you can heal the entire party.
A thief can put down a smoke field and you can all leap through it for stealth. A guardian can put down a fire field and everyone can do blast finishers in it for, I kitten you not, 25 stacks of might for 20 seconds straight!
an ele can put down a water field and a whirly warrior can whirl through it to heal players with its bolts. A thief can put down a poison field and others can fire and blast through it to poison the enemy and weaken them at the same time.
The potential for working well together is totally there, sadly players just don’t know about it. The other day in Honour of the waves, I tried to show players how to do the 25 stacks of might thing for quickly taking down strong enemies. and 2 of the three players said they didn’t even know you could combine skills like that.
The new daily was a good idea at teaching the players about combos, sadly it was buggy. but i thought it was a really good idea none the less to teach classes how they can work together.
Here lies Blackbark Willow, for the 864th time. (seriously)
That’s quite the inspiring friend!
Nah not for me personally, but a friend just found Abyss dye ! And gave it to me instead !
Yes, he is pretty much set for life in gw2 now lol. (or he can make a legendary
Dusk? Really? Thats lucky as hell wow
Nope, dusk and the Mace dropped in fractals level 9. I got one dye in fractals as well. The others dropped in ore while I was searching for the vendors who sell dark armor and also in fire heart rise as I went to find the heart guy who sells the chest piece. Literally no farming, just fighting mobs that got in the way.
Has anyone else experienced a significant increase in dye drops since yesterday? I literally got 6 unidentified dyes where as i would usually get one in like 3 days. A friend of mine also wanted to give me and my gf some dyes out of the blue, so I assumed she got a bunch as well. Beyond that, I got an exotic Mace that looks like a flower and another mate of mine got dusk. seems we are suddenly getting awesome drop rates perhaps? Perhaps the devs felt like making things rewarding? who knows. If that’s the case, thank you kindly
The idea behind the legendary was, if you play the game very well, all over the place and for a long time, you will be able to get a legendary. YOU make it a grind because you are making it a goal instead of letting it happen naturally. That is all sir.
Haha, now people will actually have to learn how to play. This could be awesome for pugs in future though, means the standard amount of skill is gonna be much higher than before.
Also, always be moving as a thief. Whenever you fight something up close be sure to strafe around it as you do. Use your right mouse button to aim at the enemy while you move left or right and dodge when you see something painful is coming your way mate.

Amazing response time! It’s already back to normal
This is a massive game and content has rolled out like crazy since release, way faster than any other game I’ve ever seen. Have you ever tried modding a game or so? I have and lemme tell you: it takes HOURS to develop even the smallest things like a new set of armour. Building a dungeon, just a simple dungeon, can take a month or so. Because of all the clutter you put in the dungeon for detail, the lighting you use to highlight where players must go, the lighting for dramatic effect, choosing and replacing which lights must cast shadows and which must not. Also highlighting what’s important and don’t even get me started on the scripting! That’s without even testing for bugs, or cuts in the scenery and crap.
I think expectations are just way too high right now. You could have a team of 300 people and you still wont be able to fix bugs fast enough in a game this size to satisfy the player base.
Or are you telling me that you spend money at cash shop even if you don’t need anything from it, just to support company?
I actually do this, just because I think they deserve it. I don’t even buy anything with my gems.
Dungeons can be a very frustrating experience. Everyone in the group tries to do his or her own thing and get overwhelmed, nobody is close by to resurrect each other and attacks come out of nowhere that down you. Next, some players skip mobs while others don’t know how and die and struggle to get through mobs alone. Eventually everyone is angry and frustrated and some people understandably quit the dungeon.
There is hope though. You can get that beautiful dungeon armor too and the journey can be a very smooth, exciting and satisfying experience by just taking some general guidelines into account when you’re running with a random group. Not to mention you’ll find some great friends and be called to do dungeons with in future.
First off you have to STOP doing what you normally do in PVE, change your gameplay from regular exploring. Dungeons just aren’t that forgiving. You can’t charge in and smack down everything you come across. You can’t dance or go to sleep in the middle of a fight to make fun of the enemies, and you can’t solely focus on yourself. That kite doesn’t fly in dungeons.
The reason people experience so much frustration in dungeons is because it often gets treated like PVE. There’s the enemy, run in and kiiiill iiiiit!!! We have to take a different approach here. While PVE pretty much allows you to play single player with an audience watching, dungeons require true multiplayer, teamwork and focus.
So how do we go about this ruan? Well good question!
A party needd teamwork and focus. There’s no easier way to make this happen than having a leader in my experience. Too often I’ve seen dungeon runs fail because there was no leader. No one knows what they should be doing or attacking and everyone is dying against weak mobs even though they are wearing exotics and have good builds. Someone must give the group direction, and guide them. This is important even in the case of experienced groups.
Sadly leading can be a confusing task if not done properly. So let’s take a look at what it is:
In my personal experience a leader is the person with the highest standard and strongest relationship with the group. By strong relationship I mean you care for the other players and constantly give advice wherever you believe it might help.
Leadership does not mean you should attack players who aren’t doing as well as you’d like, or insult people who are new to the dungeon, it just means you set the standard and you help everyone in the group achieve it.
So if you want to go about running dungeons with random groups it’s generally a good idea to share any important information throughout the run to make sure everyone is able to perform as well as possible. This includes even the simple things like “make sure you guys kill any poisonous blossoms as you run through, because the poison they leave behind will harm the players following you”. And it’s also very important to set a strategy for encounters “we will attack the enemies one by one starting from left to right ok guys” . As a leader I would suggest you ALWAYS target enemies.
There are optimal ways to go about taking down mobs, but I’ve found over time that that isn’t as important as just a good amount of focus. Any amount of teamwork is much better than no teamwork at all.
Finally, this is to help the players and not to get an ego trip. So try your best to keep it playful, be patient, and to encourage the players as well as congratulate them after tough encounters.
This goes for the times you don’t even know the dungeon as a group. Even if none of you have done the dungeon before, make sure you target and share anything you learn or plan with each other along the way. It may not be the best strategy you come up with, but it’s very important that you have some strategy and some teamwork.
By keeping to these guidelines we create great environment to play in and dungeons will be a much more rewarding experience than the frustrating one it often is for random groups at the moment. And hopefully this helps a few players out who can share it and help even more players.
Guild Commander Tags – These are tags only guild members can see. Make them show as a gold icon on the map.
Man that sounds awesome. Maybe ones for officers as well so a guild can perform proper operations with teams and stuff.

Man people are so kitten spoiled. Do you guys try your best to make sure this company receives no money whatsoever? How about being happy that you supported a game that gives away free content like it’s going out of fashion. You lost a dollar or two and now you want a refund? Do you seriously not value your own time in any way? It seems like it since you like wasting it coming to complain on these forums about absolute kittenall.
I wanted to come in here and just say a part, because I happen to be color blind as well.
There’s no way to do this while focusing on the colors it’s true, though my girlfriend gave me a few tips that seemed to have worked so far.
First off zoom in nice and close so you don’t confuse you’re mate’s lanes with yours. This will make your reaction time less, but at least you make less mistakes. And second, think of each of the first 4 lanes as left hand and the other four as right hand. Then just focus on it from there (the moment the lights hit the white circle it’s a good time to press). It seems to make it much easier this way, even for a colorblind player like me. Hope it helps mate.
It’s downloaded over 100mb now, but it still says 0% so I’m a bit concerned as to whether I’ll be able to play tonight. Anyone know?
You can finally fix it now mate. The makeover kit is available in the gem store

I was going to post a topic on the red circles being hard to see for us color blind folks. I wasn’t sure if I’d be alone in this, but I’m glad to see I’m not the only one. If Arenanet could perhaps make it an inverted color or so that would really help. Red circles are very hard to see, especially on brown backgrounds like ground or wood. I’m sure the red circles would be easier to see even if the color isn’t changed, as long as the red circle perhaps gets maybe a bit of a glow effect, or smoke, or some other particle to help catch our eyes you know? Just some suggestions and they could all work. Other than that though, the game has given me no color issues. Thank you Arenanet.
I have to agree. This was beyond anything I’ve ever seen tried in a game before and it was absolutely amazing. I’m very saddened that so many players had connection issues, because without those this would have been one of the best experiences in their gaming history like it was for me.
oh man you have no idea ;p
I was one of the few lucky ones I guess who didn’t suffer from lags or disconnects, and this is coming from a South African connection, so really lucky. I played from start to finish and the event was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in a game. Thank you guys for bringing us this awesome content. I really hope we get more events like this in the future (and of course minus the lag problems), the idea was beautiful.
