How to get rid of the "stacking" meta?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seamus.9645

Seamus.9645

The problem is, is that they have basically endorsed it with their monster designs. They have made them such HP sponges you need to stack in order to beat it with a lower skill level and higher skill levels do it now because its auto pilot and if you REALLY want to win, do it. They would need to rebalance all buffs, HoT, DoT, red rings, white rings, boss damage, boss HP… It would be quite the undertaking.

You forget that if all dragons are dead, then the world is boned because of all the abominations created and feeding on the energy left by them, do you want a million of Gorseval against you?

Its… almost like… they would need… a whole new game to address that… like a number that follows 2…

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there will never be an MMORPG called “Guild Wars 3”.

Why? Because it would be the ultimate “split the playerbase” moment. Also, anyone jumping to GW3 would have most of their work and advancement in GW2 tossed out the window. They’d get a few trophies or skins, at best, just like GW players get in GW2. The difference is that if GW3 is the same kind of game as GW2, then they have even less reason to make the jump.

It would likely be more profitable to replace part or all of GW2’s program, and keep all the players in the same MMO. And if there ever is a GW3, expect it to be something entirely different than the kind of game GW2 is.

I don’t agree with that. I think you would be right if we were talking right now but if we are looking down the line. A decade might be a little extreme, but even 6 years from now the game will have been live for nearly 10 years. The engine will be EXTREMELY outdated by then and assuming GW is still a money making entity I think the excitement generated by the next chapter would be significant. I think a good idea would be to go even further with what you mentioned. Give the player a lot of carry over from the GW2. If someone sank 10000 hours into GW2, had everything “unlocked” and was a cornerstone of the community they should build a far more robust “Hall of Monuments” (Maybe a hall heroes? Where are my Medievil fans?!?) and dish out oodles of rewards to the folks that played.

I think the bottom line here is that if the GW IP is still making them money and has a solid player base there will be a GW3,4,5,6,7 and so on

next would be Kalk

Then Jormag AND Bubbles

Then open up Cantha with a non dragon big bad. Some sort of Terracotta themed army Emperor thing maybe

Then Big Bad Primordus

Then you do Elona with the Lich Fellow

After that if the game is still going strong you go back to the beginning and maybe do a restoration of Arah with the return of the Gods.

Assuming they do Xpac, living story, Xpac, living story, release pattern that gives you just over another decade of Guild Wars 2

I actually agree with you completely. I think the biggest issue is that despite the maps depth, for 60 bucks, most people (myself included) expected a few more maps at launch. I think even just one more map with the breadth of the Tangled Depths would have been great.

My hope is that when they do these in the future, assuming they eventually tag Elona, Catha, and the Far shiverpeaks, they don’t simply relegate these to one simple super map. That would be a bad idea imo.

The number of maps that would be in HoT was listed on the website. I believe the website went live at the same time that they announced the expansion was for sale or maybe it was late August. If people were disappointed because they were expecting more maps then that’s entirely on them for not doing some research before making a purchasing decision.

Oh don’t get your knickers in a bunch, You know what i meant. A lot of people are disappointed with the amount of content not the quality of it and more of it would have silenced a dramatic amount of the complaints.

They changed all the Borderlands to something that most regular players didn’t like and have failed to address some (minor if you don’t play regularly) systemic issues. It has led to a bleeding off of regular players. So if you were someone who played daily you would have noticed a drop off in the amount of players. But if you are just starting out I would imagine you wouldn’t see many “problems” that people discuss here.

Honestly, Living story’s is one of the things that drove me from playing the game regularly. I would get busy with life and wouldn’t be able to log on for a few month and would come back to tons of missed content, some of it permanently. I never got to kill Scarlett for example. I understand that they allow you to go back and play some portions of it but there is a feeling of an “exclusiveness of club” present due to Living Stories that isn’t present even in WoW or other MMOs. There is content that literally changed the game world that some player will never ever get to access. Old Lions Arch, Hills before the destruction, etc. It is …frustrating?… I am looking for a word here to describe it… knowing that there is a ton of stuff I will never get to experience because of the speed with which living stories work. Living Stories led to the complete changing of several zones including the major Hub city within 2 1/2 years of launch. That is FAST in MMO standards.

I like story arch’s as little side things during down time that is perfectly fine with me. But I would be happy if GW2 never used Living Story Seasons to make dramatic changes to Tyria and save that for Expacs.

Which they explained as essentially “start up” and “launch” costs that wont be ongoing next year.

I am looking for a guild that does a little of everything and is large enough that finding people to run things with isn’t hard. I live in the CST zone and am usually on in the evenings. I am very friendly and easy going. I enjoy the game a great deal but it is more fun with folks to play with. I am on NSP if that makes a difference still.

I dont get why when it comes to such matchups, the two lower servers dont team up to fight the higher server together.

Why not teach them a lesson for bandwagoning?

Instead the higher server attacks one of the others, and the one mot current being attacked take advantage to add the other as well, so you end up doubleteaming with the higher server instead, they win, you both still lose.

Players created this problem along with anet, but it seems it’s up to us to fix it, either higher server player come down, or those on lower go up. But then who’s gonna pay for the gems???

Why isn’t there a massive scale of inter server WvW communication going on and a system in place of mob rule punishment against those who would break the truce with the other side you can’t speak with.

Totally and utterly beyond the scope of players ability to set up and maintain.

The WvW "outliers"

I was just looking at the leaderboard’s for WvW and felt like making a list that shows how difficult balancing is.

1. Jade Quarry 2155.6162
2 Blackgate 2125.4265
3 Tarnished Coast 2117.2351

4 Fort Aspenwood 1963.5494

5 Yak’s Bend 1902.7101
6 Dragonbrand 1887.1923
7 Sea of Sorrows 1881.8737

8 Darkhaven 1593.7134
9 Northern Shiverpeaks 1577.0876
10 Henge of Denravi 1572.5272

11 Stormbluff Isle 1548.8082
12 Maguuma 1502.514
13 Isle of Janthir 1485.2827

14 Crystal Desert 1436.9551
15 Ehmry Bay 1412.0829
16 Gate of Madness 1350.7877

17 Anvil Rock 1263.6903
18 Sanctum of Rall 1235.8882
19 Kaineng 1220.8582

20 Ferguson’s Crossing 1108.4314
21 Eredon Terrace 1105.3701
22 Devona’s Rest 1081.6188

23 Borlis Pass 1016.5162
24 Sorrow’s Furnace 996.9224

For the moment lets forget deviation and volatility and just look at the base scores. As you can see the major issue is in tier two, you essentially have four servers in that ranking level, the oddest one out this week being Fort Aspenwood. Now the issue becomes who goes where? If you look at the groupings I provided you can see how tight and nice the match ups are. All would be all within 100 or fewer points.

However that leaves a tier two team out in the cold as well as the bottom most two on any given week and I think we can all admit to the one sided stomping that would be 4th ranked versus 23rd and 24th.

So what we end up with are 8 matches that swing between wildly uneven and fairly level, for example; The 2nd tier left out in the cold should have no problem at all beating even the top two tier three teams but apart from that and the 6th and 7th tier flips the rest would be fairly close if you took the top off the tier and slipped it into the tier above. However if the bottom team in a given tier was lifted for a week, the results can be… unpleasant.

This means that in any given week we end up with between 4-8 servers facing incredibly up hill battles in their WvW matches.

there isn’t really a fix for this TBH in the current system. Any balancing of servers would simply kick the issue up or down the chain. Strengthen a tier two and tier one has an extra, weaken a tier two and a tier three has an extra.

The only real permanent solutions would seem to be mandated balanced server populations and banning transfers, a draconian method and quite unfair. The other one would be a new WvW map that was intermixed with the current one but with only two servers and/or 4 servers. 2-3 maps of that style to eat up the 2nd tier or which ever is over full. Balancing for that would be a nightmare though.

Just thought I’d put the visual in front of ya. Not trying to call anyone out or rage. Just showing what appears to be the problem and why it is so hard to fix.

we cannot force people not to play wvw ofcourse, but we won’t support them on our ts (no own channel) we won’t follow new tags etc.

We don’t want to be harsch against new community, however people need to understand our server is full. When more players join our servers, it will only result in bigger queue’s, so it will be alot harder for guilds to fully join in a borderland and pugblobs can have easily 30+ min queue on eb.

As T1 EU you need to be aware of bandwagoners, if you keep accepting new guilds to the server your server will lose its community because there is no “server feeling” Already one of our loyal guilds (RiOT) left because of the increasing queue’s.

I’ll just enjoy the irony that you cannot see how your behaviors directly lead to every major issue your WvW has.

Just to point out the current status of FSP:
currently we’re full on primetime, please do not join if you are a primetime player/primetime guild. Primetime guild will not be accepted by community. We could still use some extra force during early morning and 1-2 night commanders (no guilds).

I agree Fsp is one of the best eu servers out there, ofcourse we have some problems now and then with our community but usually that all sorts out well in the end. unfortunately due to some bandwagoners we lost alot of quality on some terrain, but overall we’re a very coöperating server, the amount of scouts is very big considering we’re primarily a fighting server and alot of guilds/commanders happily work together for the effort of the server.

unfortunately to see though that for some reason alot of other servers keep insulting us for hacking/doubleteaming/blobbing/ac whore/interrupting fights, but well there’s also something called yealousy i guess XD

So how do you determine new blood to be shunned from folks who play irregularly? Is there a group I need to register with to make sure I am of the old guard and not some scummy server transfer?

Maybe your community has problems cause you don’t welcome people that don’t fill a very specific niche roll.

[Suggestion] New Legendary Shortbow

Why not just make a legendary then reskin it to that spider bow that already exists?

WvW overhaul suggestion.

in WvW

Posted by: Seamus.9645

Seamus.9645

So, hear me out on this. I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I believe that this could be a decent WvW solution that could also fix some other problems too.

In a nutshell the idea is to tie the Guilds themselves more into WvW. “Guild Wars” is the title of the game so why not have some… Guild Wars?

Here’s how I would see it being implemented. First, every week a player gets to select which guild (s)he wants to represent WvW for (Right now I see this as the only real limitation and it may not even be necessary) then they are “locked in” to that guild for WvW only. Next, a new research option for guilds called “Mist war research” is created. Completing this allows a Guild to sign up for WvW. It would have 3 tiers; small, medium, large that unlock based on Guild population. The previous one then being locked (So a 450 person guild couldn’t do the small one) these would be researchable relatively quickly, say 24 hours, so even a guild prone to procrastination could get it done. Every week it would need to be done to “register” for the next matchup. Once a Guild had completed the research the guild leader then can select from a number of factions (Red, Blue, Green) that mirror the total sever numbers, or more or less depending on needs. Anet simply keeps tabs on the guilds sizes that are signing up and makes sure they are balanced, my suggestion would be as basic as when doing random death matches, one side is greyed out till the other(s) catch up.

This would allow a few different things. First, it would balance the matches. Especially if the names changed. You couldn’t just say “us 40 guilds sign up for Trainzforlife every time”. Obviously there will always be work-a-rounds, but I feel that large scale fixing would be near impossible and easily caught if attempted. Second, it would foster stronger guild communities and ties between guilds. While I would be opposed to vast “alliances” of guilds that essentially amounted proxy servers, I think a band of 4-5 large guilds that always attempted to play for the same faction would add some spice and drama to the game! Third, this would provide a variety for the matches, instead of: “X server again, ugh it’ll be the same as last week!” you’ll never know quite who you are facing or what to expect! Fourth and most importantly; we would have GUILD WARS.

Although the initial implementation may be rough I think a follow addition could make a huge impact in the game. After the first several weeks Guilds would get a score based on population and time spent WvWing. Not based on skills, or caps or achievements, just on how many people are playing WvW and for how long. Eventually this shifting score could be the bases for having guilds join factions rather than just “small, medium, large” It could also become a point of pride and/or a recruiting tool for guilds.
Thoughts? Feedback is appreciated.

TL;DR Guilds as the bases for WvW not servers.

I recently took a promotion at work which necessitates moving to night shift. The nature of my work will leave me long periods of nothing to do once I finish my clerical duties for the night and it was recommended to me by my boss I come up with a way to pass the time.

I love to write so I am looking to get a laptop that I can do that on but would also like one that can play GW2 as well. The thing is, is that I have a very beastly PC at home that I built so this one would only be used occasionally during a few hours of the wee morning and for nothing more than dailies, solo PvE and PS stuff. No PVP or WvW so basically I am looking for the cheapest laptop possible that will run gw2 w/o lag in the listed areas (I understand that hubs may lag of if I run into a popular event) all in all I am realistic in my expectations I am just trying to find the cheapest laptop possible that I can install GW2 on and run w/o a problem.

I had started to hunt and compare the gpu integrated/dedicated, etc, etc. But I figure if someone already knows it’ll save me some time!

Also, the smaller the better. Ideally something in the 12 inch range (or smaller) would be great.

Traits Part 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seamus.9645

Seamus.9645

My two cents on the issue of the traits.

I like the concept of unlocking certain traits through active world participation. However I feel like that should have been limited to a handful of end game traits. This would have allowed for the requirements to be much more difficult while not burning people out because if you do it the long way you would need to, as of now, unlock dozens of traits first.

Secondly I dislike how they work with the new leveling system and the system in general. I just purchased the game for my girlfriend but since I hadn’t leveled a new character in such a long time I had no idea that it had changed.

She was immediately turned off to it as a long time MMO player and felt that it was “dumbed down” and she didn’t understand why the full game was level gated. I was telling her all this amazing stuff she could do but turns out first she had to grind levels.

This matters because, to me, the leveling change was to streamline it and make it simpler but the traits runs counter intuitive to this. Its more complicated and requires double checking and tracking to make sure you unlock the ones you want and need. So on the one hand you are removing barriers to entry (albeit perhaps frustrating new but seasoned MMO players like my girlfriend) but with the traits you have in a way increased the barriers by making it one more new system to learn while the previous one pretty much functioned on its own.

TL;DR the traits system doesn’t seem inline with your current trajectory regarding barriers to entry. The whole system would work better as an end game addition but not for the first 80 levels.

My hope is that we return to something akin to the original where for at least the first few dozen levels they are automatically unlocked and perhaps a system similar to the current one for a new tier of “Elite” traits or something.

Maybe that’s it? Set up a new tier of Elite skills that unlock past 80 but are disabled during WvW or PvP?

Idk just my two cents.

defensieve sieges are too powerful. 5 men can hold back a whole server. if u dont know how to place sieges pls learn to play. i think sieges need a very small number limit while defending. i dont want to pvd the whole night. i want to fight against other players, not arrow carts.

The counter-argument being stop rolling in zergs then. ACs aren’t effective against solos or small roaming groups obviously that’s different for massive siege battles. But I have played WvW since launch and I can count on barely 2 hands how many times the “OP” defensive siege has wiped out a true attacking zerg. It depends on the quality of the attackers. Dont spam rams and complain when they go down and you have o PVD. Build catas, trebs, and rams. the triple combo trumps anything when paired with the zerg. But 99% of zergs are too lazy to do that.

"Night capping" and server solution?

in WvW

Posted by: Seamus.9645

Seamus.9645

Not a QQ post about “night capping”. And I apologize if this has been said before
To me night capping is an incorrect response to the issue of imbalanced server coverage. My suggestion is why not pair EU servers with NA servers for only WvW? I’ll admit I haven’t the foggiest idea of how difficult this would be to do but it would seem that if you were to simply inversely pair (highest pop EU server with lowest pop NA server or vice versa) the two server pairings you would end up with a nice set of balanced WvW groups with much greater 24/7 coverage. Obviously there would be some language issues. but nothing intelligent people couldn’t figure out plus it would give some global exposure to everyone! I know there aren’t an even number of servers to pair so I would suggest either A) just letting the “Best” wvw servers continue to go it alone or rotate with WvW match ups the pairings. I think this would A) solve the misdirected “night capping problem” as well as allow for a much much wider range of options in WvW.

Unfortunately I think you are out of luck for the time being. Until GW2 has another recruitment push to bring in a fresh clutch of completely brand new players the starting zones will probably stay quiet on most of the servers. I know after leveling my first two characters the “right way” I now immediately karma xp train in wvw with any new character or jump straight to LA and craft my way to level 15-20. I dont really get any enjoyment out of grinding the same hearts for the 3rd time and such. I can say this though, the most fun I have been having with GW2 right now is to play with a couple of my RL friends. I would suggest trying to introduce a buddy or two to the game. It’ll be fun for both of you
