Inventory QoL Suggestions

Constantly full inventories, overpriced account-shared slots (I refused to buy any for that price) and items that you can get tens of thousands of but only stack them up to 1000 have contributed to the fact that I am currently not playing GW2. The longer I played the more items were added to the game but the inventory did not grow accordingly, making inventory organizing more and more tedious.

As much as I appreciate any effort against cheaters, I have to agree with the rest, an automatic system would be horrible.

AFK-Farming with pets is already confirmed to be against the rules in the previously mentioned thread, as long as the character performs any action at all (like autocasting heal as a ranger), and the best anyone can do is to report those people for botting. The game security team will do the rest of the work.

Honestly those issues with your mouse bringing up unwanted elements is you having poor control of your mouse. Its also problems that I and other players don’t seem to have.

And your point is? Any problem that YOU or ominous “other players” don’t have is invalid and should not be addressed?

That one in 50 drops is across the full player base though. For an individual player it might be one in 100 drops. Or one in 200 drops if RNG is against him.

Completely wrong. If the chance is 1:50 for a drop, it does not matter how many players try to get that drop at the same time. The chance will ALWAYS be 1:50, regardless if 1 player, 100 players or 10000 players open boxes, because drops scale proportional with the number of participating players. While one player opens 1 box, 100 players open 100 boxes and 10000 players open 10000 boxes. The number of drops will statistically be 0,02, 2 and 200 respectively, which translates directly back to the initial 1:50 chance.

Furthermore, that it may be 1 in 100 drops or 1 in 200 drops depending on luck is natural, just as it may be 1 in 1. That is the nature of a “chance”.

The title “Gold farm” gives the viewer hardly any idea what your post is really about.
Also, the post “Gold farm” was made by another account. I am confused.

Anyway, that post is about people farming with their pets while being afk and the question if it is allowed. I would have suggested “Is afk farming using pets allowed?” as title.

Gold Farm

How did you miss the HUGE threads about this topic?

AFK Farming typically is done in a pretty specific way.
A) Positioning the character in a place where it is beneficial (where mobs spawn and you get loot)
B) Set a skill on autocast (for rangers it often is the heal spell, for necros it is an attack spell I don’t know anything about)
C) Go afk (this is verified by you not replying to a GM who tries to contact you)

If these three points apply, you are acting against the rules and it will result in action against the account if you are reported and caught by a GM. Please note that no third-party software (“bot”) is needed for action against your account! The combination of points A, B and C without any third-party software is enough to get you suspended.

Ranger Pet Botting?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

While I think AFK farming is an issue in some ways, I have to ask those complaining about it: If AFK farming is sooo bad because people are not at their keyboards while still gaining loot in GW2, are you also going to demand that all buy/sell orders on the TP go inactive when a person logs off for the night?

Why would anyone demand that? You should try to come up with something better than this. Your point is invalid as buy/sell orders on the TP are in no way influenced by the online/offline status or your character. People doing afk farming gain an advantage over those who log out regularly when going to sleep/work/school, because their character is obtaining wealth while he should not. The TP is completely different from that, as you cannot gain an advantage over anyone else by being logged on or off. The TP was designed to work without your interaction, killing mobs was not.

You missed the other huge post on this topic, where they already did make the clear statement. AFK farming is forbidden and will get you suspended if you set your character up specifically to farm, which means putting a skill on autocast, position yourself where you benefit from it and go afk.

You cannot “play Guild Wars2 and be away from the keyboard”. If you are not at your PC, you are not playing the game, the game plays itself. This is not my opinion, it is the ArenaNet policy. Any action your character takes while you are afk means it is automated and against the rules. A bot/third party software is not needed for the term “automated” to apply, putting a skill on autocast is enough and it does not matter at all that putting a skill on autocast is a mechanic provided by the game itself.

The only way to make people stop farming completely is to remove the need for gold.

This thread isn’t about farming though, it is about afk farming. Let’s not get into a general “pro or anti farming in games” discussion. Afk farming is done in addition to normal gameplay, at times when a player normally would not play at all. It is not something a player will choose to do instead of playing the game and it should not influence the reward structure of the game. It is forbidden and should be sanctioned like other offense against the rules. As long as that happens, there should be no problem. I believe the biggest problem with afk farming is that ArenaNet has been a little sloppy when it comes to catching and sanctioning players doing it in the past, as well as communicating that it breaks the rules when it got out of hand after the introduction of the loot mastery.

Furthermore, the question is completely pointless to begin with. It seems like you (mauried) want to suggest that if a game company is unable to completely stop bots, players should just stop caring about it, accept the bots, and mind their own business.

Like Cyninja already remarked, you reduce the actual situation into a hypothetical “black or white” situation and then ask a question which (even when answered truthfully) produces an irrelevant result.

In the same way you are arguing here, you could tell people that they should not complain about criminals, because they have always existed and no city will ever manage to get rid of them 100%. Ask someone moving to a city if he has inquired if there are any criminals in the city, and if they haven’t, claim they have no right to complain (or care) if they are robbed. This scenario is about as realistic as what you are obviously trying to express with your post.

Actually he did not say it was not a bannable offense. He said it was not an outright bannable offense. An equivalent wording would be “You will not be banned immediately/at once/on first offense”.

From what I remember, if someone is caught committing the same offense again that already got him suspended, the suspension time will increase significantly and eventually be replaced with a permanent ban if he doesn’t stop doing it.

The problem it seems is some people don’t realize that the “=/=” symbol EphemeralWallaby used stands for “does not equal”. You take that symbol out of the equation, and it looks like the dev said it was OK to AFK farm, in response to Emphemeral.

You are probably right. That thought never crossed my mind because even though I would have expected “does not equal” to be expressed as != and not as =/=, it was perfectly clear to me that =/= can mean nothing else than “does not equal” because of the context it stood in. Well, for all the confused people, now you have a translation and may finally see the truth about what others knew all along.

The quote that our Game Support Lead confirmed in that thread states that using Pets and Autoloot to gain gold and experience is fine, but those game mechanics working in conjunction with each other does not give the OK to AFK Farm.

except that AFK farming wont kill you, and others around you, if you were to get in a head on collision at 150MPH. Apples and Oranges.

Like so many other people you fail to recognize the difference between a comparison and an analogy. An analogy points out the similarities of underlying principles, while a comparison aims to point out differences.

The similar principle here is “If something is technically possible and intended in certain situations, that does not mean that it is allowed and intended in every situation”.

Pets were designed to be able to kill mobs on their own. That is ok while you blow your nose, take a phonecall, or (to re-use the example) to check why your kid is screaming, but not ok when you intentionally park your char in a mob spawn and keep farming it while afk.

A car may be designed to be able to drive 150 mph. That is ok on a german Autobahn without speedlimit but not ok on a US highway with a fiftyfive limit. (Funny, when I type the number instead of the word fiftyfive the forum will turn it into a kitten.)

Car accidents and dying are as irrelevant to his analogy as environmental pollution, work situation of those assembling the car, color of the car or that a car usually needs gas to drive while an afk farmer needs electricity to farm.

Laws are written for a reason. Rules in a game are different, and when the system the company makes violates the rules, is it truly the players that need to suffer due to it? No.

The system does not violate any rules. The player who decides to afk farm does.

Instead, said company needs to address the rules or fix the broken system. Targeting players for it at this point is not the correct path. There are no 3rd party programs/tools in use, there are no ‘tricks’ being used to violate the game, game files, or servers. Its all built in. And that IS the point.

The rules are fine. The system is not broken. What got you suspended is your decision to have your pc play the game automated with you being afk, not the system that made it possible for you to do so, just like the gun is not at fault when you decide to shoot someone.

This. Life threatening situations don’t tend to announce themselves in advance. Or potentially life threatening. You don’t stop to think if a kid’s bloody murder scream is because they hurt themselves badly or if their sibling just destroyed their favorite toy so that you can judge if you have time to get your character to a safe spot. You get up and go check it out immediately.

What you wrote is completely correct but unfortunately also irrelevant for the topic.

This discussion has not been about people who were suspended for going afk for some minutes to check on their kids or because of important issues, because that did not happen. It exists only as a hypothetical situation, usually brought up by people who want to afk farm and use the “but I could be afk because of something important, how would anyone know” card as an argument that they should not be sanctioned for it.

I have real life issues that prevent me from playing the most optimal way. I sometimes sit in one area of the game and let my necro pets do all the killing as I don’t have the energy or dexterity for anything else.

“Not the most optimal way” seems to be quite an understatement considering that you follow up on it by basically saying you can’t play the game at all and let it play itself.

I am sitting in front of my screen (usually with a movie on another screen) and glancing at the game screen every 10 seconds or so. I set my auto cast button on my summon bone minions and explode them as they are summoned. The exploded minions create poison rings that will kill most anything veteran or below. I will have to occasionly heal but sometimes can go 30 min or so without hitting a button.

This does not sound like fun. Actually it sounds a little unrealistic too, especially the “10 seconds or so”.

Would I be a target of random people coming up and reporting me?

Of course.

If so why do I have to be harrassed in this way just playing a game to my best ability?

Reporting someone who looks like he is afk farming is not harassing him. You won’t even notice being reported. You are being overly dramatic here and I doubt it will win you much sympathy to present yourself as a poor, harassed victim, when all that is being done to you is to report you because you look exactly like a cheater who is afk farming.
And the answer to “why” is “Because no player can know if you are looking at the screen every 10 seconds like you claim you do, or if you are afk watching that movie”.

To determine if your char is playing unattended is the job of a GM, and the reports are done to help a GM find the subjects he should check.

[…]how can you not prove that person didn’t have to legitimately go afk at that time, it’d be a whole debacle if you started banning people because they go afk in the middle of a spawn area and they’re a ranger.

This theoretical scenario is brought up again and again and you should have read the whole thread. For example my post just 2 posts up from yours was about this topic specifically.

People do not get suspended or banned for just innocently going afk in the middle of a spawn area. They get suspended for deliberately parking themselves and afk-farm for extended periods of time (or repeatedly), and obviously ANet is able to tell the difference very well and likely also grants players the benefit of the doubt. If this was not the case, there would be complaints about being wrongfully banned after having to go afk as a ranger of necro. There are none. Go figure.

I don’t know what you mean when you say “Won’t work”. Why would you need a clarification of what “playing the game” means? Are you seriously considering to argue that being afk while your character is logged in could be qualified as “playing the game”? That is just absurd.

There is a screenshot in this very thread showing a message that tells a player why his account was suspended/banned. Among others, one reason is “extended unattended play”. This is what afk-farming falls under. If you set your account up to play the game by itself by any means without you playing it, that is against the rules. If you are not at your pc playing the game, you are not playing the game.

There have never been complaints about having been suspended or banned for occasionally going afk when the doorbell or telephone rings, or when something important comes up. We can be pretty sure ANet does a good job in determining who is intentionally having his game played unattended and who just happens to have some mobs killed by his pets while taking a bio-break or taking a phonecall without logging out. That’s why it does not just say “unattended play” but “extended unattended play”.

You all should stop trying to break down what these cheaters are doing into tiny subsets of actions or mechanics. Autolooting or not, Ranger or Necro, Heal on auto or not, doing it for a month or for three hours, circumventing the idle-timer or not – it does not matter.

What matters is “Does this person make his account play the game for extended periods of time without actively playing the game himself”. If the answer is yes, then all the technicalities do not matter.

The weak attempts at justifying an act that is against the rules by demanding to be told a specific rule for every little aspect of what you are doing annoy me. If you afk-farm, you break the rules. Period.

I will bring a real life analogy again, despite knowing that many people have problems grasping an analogy. Maybe it helps those who understand.

You take a screwdriver and go out at night and approach a woman, then hold the screwdriver in front of her face and say “Oh my, this is a really nice handbag you have there, I really think men should be having handbags too, would you give it to me as a present?”
Then you get arrested and in court you say “But i was only holding a screwdriver, this is not illegal, show me a law that says I may not hold a screwdriver. Then I was complimenting the woman on her handbag, it was looking so nice! Surely I cannot be judged for making a compliment?! Oh and why I was holding the screwdriver in front of her face? It is such a pretty screwdriver, I was just trying to show off”.
The judge will not bother to try to find a law that forbids you from carrying a screwdriver, complimenting a woman or walking on the street at night showing off a pretty tool. He will see the big picture and determine that you were mugging that woman, just like you were. Its the same in GW2. Do not dissect your actions into tiny bits and demand to see rules for each bit. Look at what you are doing, and if it is allowed. Afk-faming is not allowed.

It really is very easy.
Pets killing mobs without player intervention is intended and allowed.
Loot being picked up without player intervention is intended and allowed.
Going afk is intended and allowed (even when your pets kill mobs while you are gone).
Putting your heal on auto is intended and allowed.

But like in all law/rule systems, specific rules may exist which take certain circumstances into account that turn a *combination of several allowed actions" into one forbidden action. In this specific case multiple things -which are all perfectly fine by themselves- were combined in an unintended way to faciliate “extended automated play” which has always been FORBIDDEN. ArenaNet never made an official statement what “extended” means exactly, but from what sirsquishy wrote his deliberately set up afk-farm definitely qualified as “extended”. That’s all there is to it.

I will link an old thread about this topic, which also includes a link to an official post by game security lead Chris Cleary himself in which he stated to have removed such afk-farmers from the game personally. Mainly this applied to rangers using their pets to farm event-xp while being afk for longer periods of time, often auto-casting their heals, but it may have shifted towards necros in more recent times. The term arenanet uses for it is “extended unattended gameplay” (not botting).

The following would be really really nice to know:

1)How many times during those 8 months did the person use the auction house to check the price on those items that he claims to have totally forgotten about?
2)What exactly was his original intention when putting them there, losing a considerable amount of listing fee in the process.

I believe ArenaNet when they say that they removed the “strike” on his account for buying gold. But I bet there is a huge red “watch this guy” lable on his account now.
Also please note that Chris Cleary never said that this person was innocent. His exact wording was “it appears” that the transaction is not this person’s fault. Which can very well mean that they are pretty sure that all this was set up, but give him the benefit of a “sliver” of a doubt.

Right. So how does your ISP have anything to do with this topic?

What he did is called an analogy. The ISP does not have to do anything with this topic, nor is it supposed to have. A lot of people seem to have extreme difficulties grasping what an analogy is and just do not understand such posts. I assure you, his post was well thought out and is absolutely plausible. You just fail to understand.

Do you know the saying “Do not shoot the messenger?”. Do you understand it? This saying in itself is an analogy. You say this, when you bring bad news which make another person angry, and that person (usually involuntarily) turns his anger against you. Your reaction is like asking “What the hell are you talking about, I am not shooting anyone! Why do you bring up murder? What does shooting someone have to do with anything?”.

PS: As far as I know most bot users are lazy gits who all run the same scripts that some other cheater prepared and uploaded to some cheater forum. I believe bots do not normally move so awkwardly that they will draw attention.

Are the three words in this post supposed to read together with the headline as one sentence? If so, Is this a rhetorical question? Or some kind of poll to ask if we learned about pvp changes via the forum post, or by playing the game? Are you trying to just express unhappiness with something, like communications about the change, or the change in itself?

Maybe you should rephrase your post if you actually want meaningful replies, I am not sure other people understand what you want better than I do.

Most of the people talking about “getting out of the map” obviously know nothing about it. Even when you glide towards the edge of a map, you will not be able to just glide out of it and “escape the map”. All maps already have invisible barriers around them and have always had. When you reach the edge, you will just sink to the ground and possibly get stuck.

Yes, there might be some areas that enable a player to break out of one or the other map that will now be reachable by gliding, but realistically, those people who really want to break out of maps can already do this on almost any map and they do it for fun and not for personal gain. People who want to cheat use teleport hacks and gathering bots.

Shared Inventory Slot Feedback [merged]

I don’t understand people who consider putting permanent gathering tools into those slots.

These tools have been sold for one reason only: To put them into the gathering equipment slot and subsequently forget about them, never again having to bother with thoughts like “do I have enough tools left or will I run out soon” or “i am going into area x and there is a lot of metal to be gathered there, I should go and buy a spare set of picks”.

The incentive for spending a lot of gems on these items was: Equip and forget. Putting these tools into a shared slot totally defeats the point of them. You will now have to open your inventory before you gather a node, and double click the required permanent tool to equip it on your current char. But wait – you aren’t done inconveniencing yourself yet. If you do not want to have to do this for every subsequent node with every char for eterinity, you now have two choices after gathering: Do you put the tool back into its shared slot, or leave it equipped? Now you have to think about how likely it is that you will gather at another node before you log off your char the next time. If you will gather again, it would be pointless to put it back into its shared slot and re-equip it at the next node. But if for any reason you need to log out or switch your char, you will have to remember to first put your gathering tool(s) back. Doesn’t that sound horribly inconvenient and the exact opposite of what people were trying to achieve in the first place?

I for one would not ever think of putting a permanent gathering tools in such a slot. Imagine this: You just gathered 2 minutes ago and you were sure you will reach another node soon, so you left the tool equipped. Now a friend messages you and asks you to do fractals, which you would like to do, but on another char. So you relog, do fractals, and then something else comes up. The next day you have already forgotten about this and play a different char and suddenly you realize: My precious permanent gathering tool is not in its shared slot! Now you have to start looking for it on each of your chars, if you cannot remember where you left it. Sorry but all of this sounds hilarious. I would rather go back to using store-bought stacks of 50 tools instead of putting a permanent into a shared slot.

Is that a typo or did you really suggest a price of 8000 gems willingly?
I was under the impression that the only people paying insane amounts of real money to lift limitations that the game makers imposed on them (and could remove for free at any time) were teenagers who got addicted to those horrible pay2win cellphone games with 99,99$ “gem packages”.

It seems that most people who say they are happy with the sale are those who have one of the few items that really benefit a lot from the slots. And that is understandable.
As I have written in my first post, there are some items (first and foremost the permanent banking contract) which offer a huge and awesome synergy with these slots. If I had a permanent banking contract I probably would have given in and bought one of those slots too, although I am insanely disappointed in the choice of implementation.

But how many people own these rare permanent items? These are not common items most players have, even after years of play. So just because you have them and feel the price is justified, don’t forget that a overwhelming majority of players does not, and understand their point of view.

For players whithout a permanent banking contract or “pass”, there are still a few items that have decent synergy, most mentioned were permanent gathering and salvage tools. Many people think the price is a bit high, but bought the slots for use with those items.

So why are so many people angry and feel like the slots are overpriced? One reason is because there are still tons of items that would benefit from such slots, and with the introduced limitations of price and quantity those items will never make it into one of these slots.

People have buff food, instruments and toys, HoT zone key items and transformation potions they would love to use on whatever alt they are. Also there are loads and loads of fun consumables you could carry around with you, if you had the space. But you don’t. It is sad to see just how many items this game has to offer that were designed with no other purpose than just to have a little fun or a giggle once in a while, which are never used because you would need a 500slot-inventory to have them available for use, and the sheer number of items you would really like to carry around with your on all chars all of them time is what makes people ask for shared bag slots instead of inventory slots.

These slots have great value for a very limited set of items and for those few items I feel like the price is ok.

However, people would like such slots for many many more items (for example “key items” for HoT zones). The real bummer is that those “key items” in fact act as a currency. The principle of needing one item (currency) to obtain another item (merchandise) applies to all those “HoT Keys” 100% and all of them should have wallet slots.

If all these currency items would not clog up our inventorys and be available to all characters, the amount of rage against these shared slots would be much smaller.

I would love to have those shared slots, but unfortunately I do not own one of the very few rare items that make those slots super-valuable and worth the huge pricetag (like a permanent banking contract). As such, instead of spending all my gems and even buy new gems with real money, I will do nothing except writing a post on the forums.

I would have paid 1000 gems for one shared inventory bag. I will not spend 700 gems on one slot.

Tempered Spinal Blades!

You are talking about one of those special items that was available during a specific event time.
Not only did Arenanet allow every player to build this item even if they completely missed the event (by making the needed items tradable and keep several small sources of blade shards in the game), the ingredients needed for it have been surprisingly price-stable despite relatively small supply and are still readily available even 2 years later.

I think your request is unreasonable and would punish those people who decided to invest into a rare commodity to sell later. Compared to other “special” skins, the one you are talking about is neither very hard to obtain, nor very expensive.

And I will mention that just in case: No, I do not have a huge stack of the needed items. I was taking a longer break back then and completely missed all of Living Story season 2. I did build one later, but it is not colored.

I think Arenanet did everything right with this item and should be commended. There are other items which have been completely unobtainable for years, like the first Halloween event backpack, bunny ears and old PVP skins. I support reintroducing some way to obtain those items for those who missed them back then.

PS: Thanks for the official post and proving everyone wrong who say Arenanet does not take action against cheaters. I have been arguing with such people in another thread just yesterday. The teleport hacking gathering bot I reported a week ago (even with video evidence) is still online though :/

Wintersday Jumping Puzzle

Shikigami.4013

Ok…I have so far not witnessed this “accusing of each and everyone of being a bot” at all, although I have a good number of finished runs myself. Maybe the puzzle instances are different ones by region, I play in the europe region.

However, I believe that one of the easiest tasks a bot program probably can do is to replay previously recorded movement/actions. The most simple clickers/mouserecorders are based on replaying things you teach them, and I certainly expect that a bot program can record what you do and then repeat it on demand.

To that end, if someone does the exact same flawless run each and every time, I understand why that can look suspicious. But I would never call them out to be botting, just because I have absolutely no way of telling if they are or not. I only call out or report bots when I am sure that they are bots.

So the real problem here is not being able to use a target in the JP, but people who accuse others just out of suspicion. I stand by my evaluation that disabling the target is a useless kneejerk reaction, and that it is not the problem here. It would be like banning hammers after someone got murdered with a hammer. And then banning axes after someone got murdered with an axe. The hammers and axes are not the problem, the people are.

You have a lot to learn about cheaters and how they operate. Instead of being angry at those pointing out bots, how about you first try to inform yourself. You could start watching my video about how to spot teleport hackers. Check my signature.

And to disable targetting just because some trolls target the wrong people is a useless kneejerk reaction. If everything would be disabled that some random people abuse, the game would be unplayable. The target is an invaluable tool to prove the position of some cheaters who would otherwise be invisible to non-cheaters, like directly below the chest.

Well, the easiest way to spot a teleporter would probably to see one at the end chest but with a score of 0. Physically impossible to get to the chest without getting a point unless you cheat.

No that does not work, I have already observed one of them not showing up at the ending chest at all, probably the location/port script was edited so that they not just pop up next to the chest like one video on youtube shows, but also port under the chest were they are not spotted right away, just like they are hiding under the fire to try to avoid being seen.

200 Free accounts farm gifts while hacking.
Gifts are deposited in guild bank.

This isn’t astrophysics

Which is why Arenanet of course anticipated this and banned f2p accounts from putting anything into guild banks, as the posts before this already correctly pointed out.

Really, all the other restrictions would be totally pointless if f2p accounts just could dump their stuff into the guild bank and have someone else take it out, that is also “not astrophysics”.

By the way my youtube channel now also has a short video showing an example of how to spot/target cheaters in the wintersday jp. See my signature.

According to the Gw2 chart of what F2p can do this is said

“Trading PostCan buy and sell items from a selected list.”

you may view all their FAQS at:

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/95982157?_ga=1.193197101.1617053550.1444300724

I don’t need to view any FAQ because I have access to a f2p account and see what it can and cannot do firsthand. You are nitpicking here. Ok, yes, there is a “selected list” of what f2p accounts can sell. I do not know what that list contains and I do not care. Nothing in my inventory is on that list. The list was made to ensure that nobody uses f2p accounts to “farm stuff” and have another account profit from it, and it does its job. You cannot sell anything you obtain from wintersday gifts and botting the JP on a f2p account would be completely wasted time so it is not done, period.

Can you guys stop using this “free2play” nonsense?
Free2play accounts can do nothing with those winterday presents. They can not sell wintersday presents and they can not sell drinks either. A free2play account can only buy a very limited amount of specific items on the TP. Selling anything requires the full game, so botting with a “throwaway” f2p account is completely useless (and even if they could sell, they then would have gold which they could not send to any other account).

On the topic of bots, I spotted the first one today and took video footage and reported him to exploits@arena.net with a link to the youtube video I uploaded.
There will probably follow quite a few, because I hate botters and cheaters and I will report every single one I meet in the JP regardless of how much work it is.

If you have an NVidia card that supports it, I recommend running ShadowPlay in the background. You can set it up to run in the background and keep the last X minutes (1 minute is enough) of video footage available, so that when you spot one of those teleport hackers you can press the hotkey and save the last minute to harddisk and spot the names that are hard to see because the chars are only visible for split seconds.

By the way this is not only great for catching JP cheaters but also to report those underground teleporting gathering bots that keep harvesting from under the map all over tyria.
