I don’t think its the end of the world at all if they make gear progression in this game, gear progression is in EVERY game, what makes it so bad for GW2 to have it?
I don’t know. My favorite games to play at the moment are GW2, Planetside 2 and MWO. Those three are more than enough to keep me busy until next year when Arma 3, DayZ standalone and Elder Scrolls Online come out.
As long as Anet makes good on all their ideas and promises so far, GW2 will remain the best MMO on the market right now.
The reason it’s the “best” right now is because its a SKILL BASED GAME.
The introduction of a gear grind removes that skill-based nature from the game by trivializing content and handing out unfair advantage in WvW to people who engage in one type of content (the GRINDY, backbiting, exclusionary, elitist type).
So yes, it is a very big deal. What is the point of even having dodge if they intend you to “grind-out-gear” for events and pvp?
Yeah but gear progression is what drove PvP in Vanilla WoW. You have to admit it.
There is still skill because you can dodge to evade attacks, use terrain, better coordination of attacks, combo moves, etc.
There already is a big difference between a level 40 and a level 80 in WvW, more stats and higher stats still give you an advantage at a higher level.
I’m not saying they should go all out and put in PvP gear with Resilience (worst idea ever thought of )
But a little gear progression isn’t bad. They just need to make sure its extremely linear, more of a min max kind of thing, instead of having huge jumps in power like other games have between gear sets.
I think that is what they were trying to do by introducing Ascended gear as well, with the current model anyone who has legendary’s has a huge advantage over someone in exotics because of the stat difference so the way I heard it explained, they were trying to bridge that gap.
I normally would say I hate the idea of a dungeon finder in an MMO. But in this one I don’t think it matters and I think it would actually help, not hurt the MMO.
Its because PvE, WvW and PvP are separate in this MMO and done quite well in this way.
A Dungeon finder would just help people run them easier and would not impact the other aspects of the game.
I am excited about the adding of new dungeons to Fractals of the Mists, that concept for PvE is amazing. Hope they add a lot of crazy levels, jumping puzzles, game mechanics and music to FotM.
I am also excited about adding new content and reward progression to WvW.
I hope they go all out and add gear, rewards, specific titles, new game mechanics, new siege, new borderlands, new jumping puzzles, and Kill Death Ratio board on their website and make it pertain to Servers, Guilds and Individual Players.
I really do hope they consider making it so we can all see each others names in WvW as well. Notoriety goes a long way in pvp, especially World vs World PvP like they have made here.
In any case, keep up the great work and I will keep playing and paying.
Happy Thanksgiving to ArenaNet
This game has something that all others don’t. Its high quality and its free to play.
You must not realize how intelligent they were with this decision.
Take me for example… I played GW2 since its release and all I ever did was WvW, so naturally I burned out on it. It got to the point where I didn’t want to play this game AT ALL. Now if there had been a subscription fee involved, I probably would have canceled my account.
But instead I just took a break and didn’t play for a while, and then the thought occurs…“hey, there is no subscription fee to renew, Ill just open up GW2 and give it another shot”
And here I am having fun again. That is what will make this game survive. You can put it down and pick it right back up and there is no account subscription, renewal, money paid or anything involved.
And I think with PvE content patches like FoTM dungeon that just came out… along with some bug fixes, WvW content, people are going to realize that they have a superior MMO on top of it.
But I have been playing video games and MMO’s for a very long time now, and I see the same trend repeat itself over and over.
New competition gets released, and then suddenly its like some massive forums troll cannon zeroes in and fires all of its trolls at the new games forums.
So I guess forgive me if I see some repetition going on in your comments as well.
I have to agree that this is the best MMO (in my opinion). It’s not perfect, but there is zero appeal to all other MMO’s now that I’ve played GW2. I just can’t stomach playing an MMO where the following are part of the game design:
1) A subscription fee
2) Punctuation marks over NPC’s heads (what is this, Sesame Street?)
3) Quests that you have to use your imagination to buy into (centaurs attacking the town my eye)
4) Raiding (/puke)
5) Kill stealing and resource stealing
6) Quest competition instead of cooperation
7) Gear-based PvP
8) Level disparity discouraging cooperative play in lower level areasI agree with everything you said here. Especially the subscription fee part. How can anyone pay for a subscription fee in an MMO anymore after seeing the ones out now that are F2P and higher quality than anything that has been released before?
I can’t believe people still play an 8 year old MMO and act like its the greatest thing ever, and they pay 15 dollars a month for it! Look how long they take to release a content patch as well. Paying for nothing.
It would seem millions of people disagree with you
Well, I think they must be starting to agree or else these forums wouldn’t be getting hit so hard with complaint threads all of a sudden. Seems like any time that game takes a nose dive, anything new that came out gets their forums trashed.
I’m in overflows so much on my server that I don’t even accept the queue anymore, I just stay in the overflow.

Those games all had a subscription as well. This one doesn’t.
Warhammer was fundamentally broken to begin with, and had insane balance issues between classes that never got fixed.
AoC was a trainwreck… DX10 STILL bogs down high end PC’s
SWTOR was bug ridden and almost unplayable a lot of the time.
SWG…. I never played it but I tried the free trial and quit within 2 minutes of playtime. I don’t see how anyone could even call that a game let alone one of the best MMO’s. Sorry if I offended anyone with that but its true.
GW2 has some annoying bugs but runs very smoothly almost all the time, is beautiful, has amazing World PvP and as they are proving, some of the most interesting and well done PvE ever made as well.
Honestly I think some people are just bitter and will trash any game that comes out because they get a sick sense of enjoyment out of it.
This is not the game that I paid for.
Thats why I am complaining
What is the game you paid for? I would go return it if you bought the wrong game. Most places don’t accept returns on software that has been opened though.
Would do you better if you paid attention and made sure you bought the right title next time.

I’m enjoying the game a lot. So is everyone on my server, I don’t see any whining about the game in chat anywhere.
It only happens here on the forums.
Also Im puzzled why so many people are threatening to quit. What is there to quit? There is no subscription.
Are you going to take your ball and go home?
You will be back.
See you when you come back.
I have to say I am surprised that we have a Next Gen MMO without a subscription model. I think the industry is starting to catch on with the releases of Hawken, Planetside 2, Mechwarrior Online and Guild Wars 2 all following the F2P format.
Bugs aside, you have to admit that GW2 has the best PvP and PvE content in the MMO market right now, and all this while being a recent release.
If they could just nail the annoying bugs it would be almost perfect (aside from constantly adding new content as every MMO has to do after release )
The main bugs that are tarnishing it from my standpoint are Culling, endless load screens at times, CTD at times, that never ending and very annoying catapult sound in WvW, sometimes if you are moving your character will get bug and keep moving backwards or forwards (using a movement ability usually stops it from continuing).
Other than culling, they don’t happen often enough to be game breaking (although that kitten catapult sound needs to get fixed pronto)
I don’t understand why when you go in the game you see large amounts of people enjoying the game and having fun, but when I come to the forums I see nothing but thread after thread about how GW2 fails. The forums are recently like this too, I’m starting to think that they are under attack by trolls.
The game doesn’t have a subscription, no one is forcing you to play it. Take a break if you need to, I did and came back a week later and im having more fun than ever.
But I see people asking for people to join for Level 9, which if it goes that high up with new stages the entire time, its a massive amount of PvE content for just one dungeon.
Uhh you know there’s only 9 mini dungeons right? You get a random set of 3 each time, and it just keeps repeating over and over and over. The difficulty just keeps going up, it’s ‘endless’
Ok so it isn’t as big as I had imagined but is still pretty big for one dungeon you have to admit.. one mini dungeon can take a long time. I dont believe I have seen all of them yet either.
I hated wow, and I hate the fractals. Sorry.
Well maybe you just hate PvE. There is WvW and SPvP in this game that you can do. I am more of a hardcore PvPer myself but this dungeon is great and im having a lot of fun running it.
Its great that this game is providing next gen MMO content and doesnt have a subscription fee.
As someone who has played WoW since its beta and up til halfway through Cataclysm, as well as Rift, I have to say that this new dungeon is the best design for PvE I have ever seen.
For those who haven’t tried it, its a series of stages that you get at random. They are full of challenging puzzles and bosses and require you to work together as a team to figure it out. The mentally challenged need not apply, you will not faceroll your way to loot which is nice and I think that is what is turning some people off.
For me its the best thing ever. Once you complete three random stages you advance to the next “level” and it gets harder. It seemingly goes on forever.. I haven’t gone past Level 2 myself. But I see people asking for people to join for Level 9, which if it goes that high up with new stages the entire time, its a massive amount of PvE content for just one dungeon.
Really does justice to the name “Fractals of the Mists” which seems to be going after a concept of different dimensions that you keep jumping through.
The artwork in this game for PvE is amazing so a lot of the levels are beautiful.
One thing I wish they would work on though, is we need more in game PvE music. I know a lot of people listen to dubstep while they play MMOs, but I would rather put a block of dried ice down my pants and play than listen to dubstep.
I enjoy the soothing in game music in video games, the problem here is that the sound track repeats no matter what part of the game you are in.
Oh yeah, for the people complaining that they cant get in FotM with a lower level character, I play it all the time on my level 35 Elementalist. I just form my own group, people are ready to join, at least on my server. (Jade Quarry) Map chat is constantly being spammed for groups so it fills instantly.
Every now and then ill get a snide comment, but they go anyway because the group is already formed Anyway once inside I prove myself. I have a level 80 aside from this character and I know how to play. The game does a really good job of scaling you up to 80 for this dungeon.
Anyway thats my 2 cents on the matter.

So I did this event for 2 hours around there. Got to the end part, the Ancient Karka is rolling down the ramp, Im following the zerg.
Game crashes, send a report to Arenanet.
Log back in and its dead and I didn’t get any credit for it.
Hate or break, it turns out that BG isnt that good.
you laugh, I whine, my mind is weak, im a loser and you are a winner.
But besides all that, they really do need to remove the AoE limit, increase it to 30 people or just go all out and make it infinite targets. I still dont think the intention for WvW was for a group of 40 people standing literally on top of one another, to be porting around with mesmer portals only so as to remain this invulnerable glob of people firing aoe, heals and whatever.
I think they intended for the game to be played by groups of people spread out using tactics. In any case there is a lot of tweaking that needs to go on in WvW.
Ah well, it was a good match Blackgate.
Its just a bug, sometimes it doesn’t show. Or is it!! No but seriously lately I have noticed that.
Hey thar, lets keep this thread mature and about scores and conquests and defeats and not about orb hacking, exploits and so on.
I understand that we are all frustrated with this weeks matchup, but just so we at least even have a thread to look at about our matchup, lets keep it that way. Please and thank you.
it was just a terrible analogy and a wall of text in the attempt to give credit to a tactic that is obviously abusing the AoE limit of 5 random people being hit at a time. By doing so they are making themselves invulnerable to almost all area effect attacks. Pair this with a mesmer or two who run ahead and drop port, and then the whole zerg ports and remains stacked, and you have an unbeatable strategy.
Clever yes, but it is an exploit in my book because I don’t think that they intended for the game to be played like that.
Well ok lets say A-net removes the no more than 5 people hit by an AoE at one time thing. Then we can use elementalist healing much more effectively because what they do to damage is also done to buffs. If they did that it would only make us stronger in the long run.
Hence why they can’t do anything about it. Funny thing is I have a lot of screenies of the entire turtle being dead because you guys are adapting to it.
Socrates method of thinking More of that history stuff =)
thats fine, remove the AoE limit and lets roll with that plan. I like it
(drop a nuclear bomb on a group of Persians and Spartans stacked on top of one another in a dog pile)
If they remove the AoE limit then I will call it a fair tactic

The way it works, is you order an upgrade from the Quartermaster. Then the worker takes supply from the Tower/Keep/Garrison and uses them to complete the upgrades.
He will run back and forth from the supply depot to the gate or wall and do a little hammer/repairing animation over and over. He takes about 10 supply every time, and as he works, the upgrade slowly gets finished.
So if you are taking supply from the Tower/Keep/Garrison while it is upgrading, you are keeping the worker from having the supplies he needs to complete the upgrade.
Keep in mind, when reinforced walls/gate/fortified completes, it fully repairs the entire structure. So if you are being sieged back and forth and one of these is trying to complete, you are screwing yourself by draining the supply, because as soon as the worker finishes upgrading to reinforced, every gate and wall will repair itself automatically.
The best policy is to leave the supply depot alone when upgrades are happening, after that if its fully upgraded, then its ok to use the supply. Just make sure you are defending and keeping the supply camps captured, running Yaks etc.
Hope this helps!
sigh, unfortunately eRep is judged more than personality or skill
That isn’t true at all! Skill is recognized first and foremost, second is personality. That is where the “e-Rep” comes from, not the ability to buy gold and spend it on commander books lol.
Guild Wars 2 is no different than any other MMO, except that it tends to cater more towards the PvPer and less to the PvEr. This works out in my favor, fortunately.
One of the best things about this game is you really don’t even need a guild to do well or have a good time, you can just be a skilled player and do very well on your own, if you choose. Or you can start your own guild and do your own thing as well.
I am glad I found a game where drama queens and all the trash from the WoW community don’t have a platform to grow their crap on here.
No I personally wouldn’t if that were the case as you described. Its easy to see a blue dot and follow it, and that is why there are so many commanders nowdays. Personally I think its stupid to buy a commander book if you yourself are not a leader, and your desire to have the title is simply to lord it over others, out of a desire for control, rather than to advance your server or advance your guilds standing. I am speaking broadly when I say this, so don’t take it personally if I managed to describe anyone.
Some people are born leaders, others just want the title. Actions and results are what separate the two.
Nothing is worse than a commander who demands respect but does nothing to earn it.
Did you really just interview yourself?
I had to quote this because it made me lol.
But anyway, I am of the opinion that drama and video games don’t mix. And when you find yourself in a hostile environment because one or more people have decided to take to whispering and manipulation instead of stating their grievances out loud, then its time to move on.
You make it sound like you experienced something like this recently?
(edited by Stormcycle.4208)
Well it matters as far as who is going to win WvW this week and be the top server. But I guess beyond that it doesn’t matter.
Starting a new thread since the last one was closed by a moderator.
Lets keep it clean, no flaming or trolling. We are Tier 1 folks, lets stay classy.
Thanks a lot for the update, we just need a bone thrown to us here and there to let us know whats going on I think WvW is the best PvP I have ever experienced in an MMO and I do hope you focus mainly on WvW and SPvP first and foremost.
Its not paranoia, its just the way it is. I used to think like this too but then I realized there are only two possibilities in a three faction matchup. You can have 1v1v1 or 2v1. So there is a 50% chance of 2v1.
Personally I think 4 factions is more balanced, you have 1v1v1v1, 2v2 or 1v3.
Its been a pretty even match tonight, great fights being had by all. I am proud to see IoJ holding their own in T1 so far!
Here is the current score:
Great fights so far, current score is:
SBI- 4402
IOJ- 4075
JQ- 3719
It will be very interesting to see how this plays out! Back and forth all night, its complete chaos and war, best WvW I have ever been a part of so thanks to everyone for that
I was just wondering because in games like WoW and Rift you get these people who constantly make posts about how this or that should change and keep beating the drums for more content. I was just wondering if the people doing all of this complaining are also doing anything to support development costs.
You know, since this game isn’t charging you 15 dollars a month like World of Warcraft is.
Just a simple question and not intended to offend anyone.
(edit: They did say they have a design team dedicated to WvW, but I also think the silence about WvW is deafening. It would be nice if we got a comprehensive post from a developer on all their future plans for WvW)
I want to start a WvW team with 10 rifle warriors, stand in a line...
in WvW

I will run up to that and hundred blades
Im tired of people complaining about having to run long distances to get back into the fight.
What do you want, the ability to teleport back into every fight, so that its neverending? The ebb and flow of the battle is determined by losing players being forced to run back, and then run back forces you as a player to make more careful decisions when you are going to pvp.
Are any of you people who are begging for changes, you know, buying gems and stuff to support development costs?
Because this game has no subscription fee. So if you want changes and aren’t buying gems then you are kicking yourself in the ****
Roll a Norn, and I’ve also heard a Charr. Run the Jumping puzzles like that.
Camera freaking the F out whenever you are on a close jump = hard mode.
I kept telling people to relax and that IoJ would pull ahead at some point. Glad you guys all proved me right I’ll hopefully be joining the battle again tonight, my internet is acting up but may be fixed by tonight.
Im happy if we maintain our 2nd place, but I wouldn’t mind moving up to Tier 1 even if we did get stomped.
Thanks for the compliments Kardiamond. It gets tiresome carrying a server when people refuse to work together, have no desire to succeed in WvW, or are just terrible at playing video games in general. We did what we could, we held out until everyone else left. Now it will just be randoms unfortunately. I wish all the best of luck to you and Anvil Rock in your future endeavors against Kaineng and Devonas Rest
ANV didnt transfer anywhere close to Darkhaven, NSP or Yaks, I am not going to say where we transferred but you are going to have to work really hard if you want to fight the server we did transfer to. As a guild I am confident we will bring that server to Tier 1.
I also find it odd that you title your post “rats leaving the ship” when referring to ANV, the guild that did the most in organizing and upholding the server, spending the most money, upgrading the keeps and basically trying day and night to make Anvil Rock succeed.
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. Look at your map now that most of ANV left. It would have had a strong presence of Anvil Rock if ANV was there leading raids like normal. Would you still be losing? Yes, but it wouldnt be all green like it is now, nowhere close.
Point proven. The horse got tired of pulling all that dead weight.
I think everyone eventually realized that ANV was Anvil Rock the entire time. One guild cant take on two servers simultaneously.
I agree with four teams. If you have three factions its either 1v1v1 or 2v1.
With four factions you can have 1v1v1v1 , 2v2, 1v3. Much more balanced there I think.
