Well, Thieves in SPvP are nothing but capbots. Literally all you can do successfully is run from point to point, decap, help one of your teammates kill someone, keep decapping.
Apparently ANet is completely fine with this.
If you thought Thieves in this game are bursty or anything close, then I’m sorry, but there’s like 5 classes that burst harder than we do. Hell, you could remove every little of the already lacking survivability we have just to make Backstab hit harder and you’d crit for 9k at MOST on light armor. Then watch a Warrior crit the same guy for 12k with Eviscerate while having 20k HP while still being able to have like 10 seconds being inmune to damage, etc etc.
Honestly, unless you enjoy running and enjoying the view (because that’s most of what you’re going to be doing in SPvP as Thief) then just reroll.
The Warrior might as well have been afk. What is this video supposed to prove? That you can kill braindead players?
Seems very balanced and thoroughly tested.
Just played a round with a p/p thief on the opposite side while on cele ele. All my deaths were basically caused by here. You don’t even realize that they’re shooting at you while you’re fighting someone else.
You mean exactly like you don’t see a Mesmer bursting you? Difference is the Mesmer doesn’t have 11k HP. Now go into the Mesmers forum and starting crying as well.
Run any stunbreaker and P/P pistol can’t do anything to you. Roll the freaking unloads. Jesus christ guys. Sure, it’s great against people who play like they’re AFK, but so is every build. Are you for real?

If we land on someone from a fall that takes more than 50% of our HP, we instantly finish them.
Suicide META AWW YEAAAHHH (we’d probably be more useful than now)
Alright, I can’t even take this seriously anymore.
“Let’s give every class lots of cool baseline stuff and let’s give Thieves an extra roll and they have to trait for it… in GM traits”
Just admit it, at this point ANet are just trolling every serious Thief player.
^
No, because you can simply make our damage scale the more Toughness or Vit on our target. EZ PZ
Hello, welcome to the Titanic, enjoy your trip!

I haven’t seen a thread of you complaining how Mesmers can burst you down coming out from Stealth in 1/2 a second but I’m sure you didn’t think of it as hax. Yet a a Thief – easily counterable by stealth detection – that jumps around leaving caltrops and a trap every 20 seconds is definitely OP and hax.
The bias and hate towards Thief is simply unbelievable.
People died, without seeing any of the thieves.
ANet should definitely nerf the runes so Thieves go back to having ONE viable build.
Spot the guy who gets destroyed daily by Thieves even though we’re in awful state right now.
SPvP player here. I’m 100% convinced someone is trolling us here. There’s just no excuses that can justify what’s happening with Thief anymore.
Our traits are either mandatory or utter garbage. We never really go “oh, what should I take here?”. We’re trolled with stuff like reducing falling damage as GM trait. ZERO traits for Shortbow, absolutely no decent Pistol/Pistol build. Daredevil comes and we get a Staff, a two handed weapon with a Sneak Attack that deals NO DAMAGE and the weapon itself has no access to Stealth. It also has no access to fields, or boons.
Now they’re nerfing Stealth even more. Everytime I’m gonna be against a decent Engi he’s gonna grab this new Elite skill and Shadow Refuge is going to become 100% useless. How did they manage to make us even LESS useful that we are right now? It’s honestly mindblowing.
We’re sold as a class that comes from the shadows and kills players quickly… that was 3 years ago. Mesmers have a higher burst and longer Stealth than we do, all this while having clones up. Warriors can burst harder than we can while having 3x more defensive tools, everybody knows this. Our biggest source of damage comes after Stealthing which means we need to risk getting murdered in order to deal damage or pop a utility skill that has one billion seconds cooldown to get a 4 second Stealth time. 4-9k Backstabs, I can crit for harder than that on my D/D Celestial Ele with Fire Grab after one Might Stacking Rotation which takes 2.5 seconds and puts me at ZERO risk.
Also of course, they gave all the new toys to the other classes while we are forced to spec for it in a GM trait.
At this point it has to be intentional, there’s no way someone can make so many mistakes and not realize what they’re doing.

but this place is spiraling down the rabbit hole pretty fast.
very fitting with the state of the class then
10/10 OP, made me laugh, then I cried because it’s not inaccurate either
Reading the Elite specs other classes are getting plus the new changes make me cry when I look at my Thief.
Completely underwhelming.
We still don’t have any way to clear conditions right away, any burst condi build will take 70% of our HP before we can get rid of the conditions. Seems like the traitlines aren’t going to be touched, so I’m guessing we’re gonna be stuck with less falling damage as GM trait?
The Daredevil spec still doesn’t fix any of the core problems the Thief currently has.
If you just take a look at this forum section, you’ll realize Thief is in a pretty bad state. But hey!, look at the bright side, pretty much every 1 v 1 you win at this point is rewarding your play so much more than other classes. So every victory or duel won should be extra delicious for you.
I fail to understand the hate for Thief in PvP.
I’m a relatively new player, I played for about a month of Thief and playing pretty much every class after Thief feels like a massive upgrade. Be it synergy between traits+builds, much more forgiveness in execution, more defensive options, the same or even higher burst damage, more versatility and utility. Why would anyone hate on Thieves now? Might as well go hate on Mesmers since they do everything we do 2x better.
Honestly, does ANet hate Thieves? Because after a month of playing one I’m already frustrated. I can’t even begin to image how someone who has mained a Thief for 2 + years must feel.

Oddly enough mesmers are not affected even though they fill exactly same “role”.
This is the part I don’t understand. Most classes can fill different roles. We can’t. So at least if we’re stuck in a single role, we should excell at it, but Mesmers can do the same thing without risking as much. Or at least that’s how it seems from my perspective, which apparently isn’t very wrong even though I’m a relatively new player.
I also can’t understand this logic that if we’re able to +1 that means we shouldn’t be as good 1 v 1 as other classes. Losing to certain players purely because of class or balance shouldn’t happen (I’m a very competitive person so it’s extremely frustrating to me).
Is there any chance ANet changes the current traits for HoTs or is the only change that we can expect is the introduction to the Daredevil?

Warning, wall of text incoming.
Hey guys, a little info about me before I start.
I’ve been lurking the forums for a while. I’m a SPvP player. I bought this game before launch with 5-6 friends of mine, but left a couple of months after it because the PVP state was pretty awful. I decided to come back around a month and a half ago. I created every class and tried them out in SPvP with multiple builds. It seems most classes have several viable builds (by viable I mean perhaps not just meta or amazing, but also builds that are good if you’re a good player yourself) and this is something I loved right away.
With that being said, I eventually tried out Necros and finally the Thief. I didn’t play Necros that much as the class just didn’t appeal to me so I can’t talk much about them.
However, when I tried the Thief I loved the feel of the the class right away. I got horribly rekt during my first 3-4 arenas but started doing a lot better. Tried different builds, all of them with SB as secondary weapon because mobility is a must in SPvP and overall I have fun playing the the class. After a month of playing the class I feel I’m a decent/above average Thief.
Now, after playing the class for a while, there are some things that I dislike.
First, I feel that us Thieves are an extremely high risk low reward class if we’re playing against semi competent players. I’ve read tons of people in the forums claiming we can “burst down players in a split second”, but I sincerely think that’s only the case if you’re against new players or downright bad players who don’t run stunbreakers or have an atrocious build. Moreover, other classes also have insanely high burst, with a TON more survival (Mesmer/Warrior).
When I compare our trait lines to those of other classes I always feel I’m giving up two or three things in order to get one (except for Shadow Arts which has everything we need … in Stealth anyway… and is currently impossible to ignore and I doubt that can be a very good thing). Some other classes traitlines like Elementalist Arcane for example, have so much more utlity and better passives that when I’m fighting one of them it makes me feel like they have 6 traitlines instead of the three you have to choose from.
After almost 600 games I concluded that Thieves are nothing but cap/decap kitten who roam between points. We can surprise an enemy player who is dueling one of our teammates and quickly take him down and that’s about it. That’s our only role in SPvP.
I’m perfectly okay with that being our role, but then why can other classes do that pretty well too? I also play a D/D Elementalist and their mobility is insane, they can also have some pretty nasty burst and I honestly hardly ever lose a 1 v 1 (I think once I learned rotations properly + might stacking I died a couple of times only to trap rangers iirc). I’m perfectly aware that D/D eles are horribly broken, but the fact remains that a lot of classes have also high mobility, high burst and a ton more potential for 1 v 1ing. All that while having a ton more defensive options. Even Mesmers provide a ton of Stealth for the whole team, too.
I’m a little confused. What IS exactly that we excell at?
We can’t brawl. We aren’t exactly useful to our team besides providing a couple of blinds and Stealth with Shadow Refuge. Our defensive mechanism (Stealth) seems completely lackluster when a ton of classes can still bring 60% of my HP down when I’m stealthed. Even if we manage to spike a target down within a second, if there’s another enemy near we can’t ever stomp that target because of our squishy nature. Our defensive utlility cooldowns are freaking massive. Everyone and their mother (literally) focuses us down once we’re out of stealth so I usually directly avoid team fights unless I can burst a target quickly and just run and decap. It feels like I’m trapped in this role where unless I do THAT, I’m completely useless. There’s a ton of classes that I can’t even attempt to take on unless the other player is braindead. Overall, the class feels pretty underwhelming.
Another thing I noticed, is that we don’t exactly have many build/weapon options. Pistol/Pistol is atrocious. I don’t understand the concept of this dual weapon. The auto attack deals condition damage with mediocre damage, yet #3 is a burst skill that doesn’t really deal that much damage (say, compared to Ranger’s Rapid Fire) yet eats our initiative super fast.
I was kinda hoping Daredevil would bring new things to the table and some passives would be moved around in order to give us a bit more options but after seeing Daredevil I don’t think anyone is going to run Staff in SPvP. I can see many people running Daredevil only to improve the existing builds, though.
Is my perception of the class wrong? I’d love to hear some feedback from experienced Thief players. Does ANet do some balance tweaks here and there between game updates? Or will Thieves remain like this for another year?
Excuse me if I messed up somewhere, English isn’t my first language and I’m currently sick (at home, not working, so I had the time to type this)
