First of I love my ranger and though I started with an Ele, I can honoustly say my ranger has become my main character and I start to enjoy playing it more and more despite some already discussed issues which i’m learning to play around and addept to at the moment.
I’m not asking for rifles to be simply added to the ranger class it needs to be implemented in a “logicall” way.
What I was thinking about is in a future release to split the ranger class into A “conservative” line and a “progressive” line. The first being what Anet wants it to be, a classic huntsman like ranger depending on pet teamwork using the weapons they have been using for hundreds of years Bow & sword mainy and perhaps focused more on crowd control and multiple target damage. The progressive ranger would be using Riffle and pistol mainly for more single target focused damage.
The progressive line embraces the new riffle and pistol technology and abandon the bow and other more traditional ranger weapons for them. It would still be pet focused, but use them in a different way. The conservative line pets would be the damage oriented ones, felines, bears, hounds and generally use the larger breeds of pets with the same skill set they have now. The progressive line would use pets much less for damage but more for conditions like blind, interrupt, confuse. Generally pets that “annoy” the hell out of an enemy and hinder rather then damage him.
The progressive line would be more of a skirmisher using the riffle to disrupt the enemy and joining the battle later with pistol and sword/dagger/horn. Basically much the same as late 1700, early 1800 skirmishers when more accurate bored riffles became available.
Skills should be significantly different off course and combat styles for “hand to hand” should also differ between both lines.
What would you think about this split in the ranger class. One thing I can see is this perhaps takes the ranger to close to the engineer class. Having never played an engineer I have no clue about that.
I don’t see any objection in the lore department. An Asura or a Charr in particular would have little to no problems at all with using this new technologie. I can imagine a Sylvari would have more problems adopting to it as a ranger. And also for humans it should not be a problem at all. A “ranger from the city” would have a lot less problems accepting new tech concepts then a “ranger from the countryside”
This is all just a thought I had, and far from perfect off course. But in general is this something you would like to see the ranger evolve to in GW 2. I’m happy with my ranger as is atm but I do think it’s kind off silly they cannot use riffles and pistols , however I do understand the why of it taking into account the rangers lore background.

to put this “war” talk into perspective, depriving the enemy of resources is also a very viable & effective war strategy. So is spying, so what about (not directed at anyone in particular) all the topics asking for banning of griefers & spies. It’s a war out there and everything goes. As far as i know Tyria never signed the genevan convention or knows something similar. ;-)
There are plenty of non combat jumping puzzles in PVE world Synda.
I know, i have done them all, and know it’s a pvp zone, i spend most my time in wvw. Point is, it would simply be nice to have a place in wvw where you can hang out with the opposition to have a break from the endless bashing & pvdooring. Just meet the guys & girls on the other side, hang out, before you get out and bash each others head in again and take their keep. For all ic are even admire each other and thanking for the good fight they put up and share experiences.
It’s a game in the end, and it’s just another server with players also enjoying the game but who you probably would never meet otherwise.
And as someone said, if people are that fanatic about it, if they need to do the jp for the siegeprints you dont have to worry much about them outside wvw anyway so what’s the point? your more usefull outside the jp then camping it.
Yes it is pvp area like the rest of the wvw maps. And though i hardly ever go to the jp’s i only go there if i want to complete the puzzle. Not for the prints or tokens. I buy them as i need them and have tons of unspend badges in the bank. So i have been killed several times despite expressing my intentions not to fight. I walked past downed players without finishing them only to be stabbed in the back. Well he’s in his rights as said it’s a PVP area. And if you enjoy it to backstab, be my guest, i’ll try another time or get some friendlies to stomp him a few times without finishing so he can heal only to be downed again.
What would be fun though is when the jp is a non combat area and the jp can only be completed by working together. Each side holds a key to a different part off the puzzle that is needed to finish the jp. A bridge that needs to be lowered so the other team can open a door so the third can acces the next obstacle that opens the jp path for all. So if one side does not cooperate no one can finish it. This purely to take a break from the endless player killing outside the jp. A place to meet the enemy on a different level and in a fun and less serious place. Because some people take it way to serious.
Thanks for the replies.
I’m not naive, so i would not just give anyone a bunch of gold. I realize the ratio scammers to good people is about 75-25% or something close to that where large (though reading people have 5k+ gold and turn a 100g in a few days, what i have to invest is mere change to them ;-) ) amounts of gold are concerned.
But if there happened to be someone in my guild or someone i get to know better ingame over time that is good at making money at the TP what i’m aiming for is that i give them that money to “invest” or rather play with. They are playing the TP anyway so i’m hoping on some goodwill that it does not matter to them they play with a bit of extra gold and return what that little extra provides to me. Either for free if they turn out to be a philantropist or for a share to keep things honoust. Perhaps they might even enjoy the challenge to start all over and see if they can again make alot of money with X amount starting gold.
My main concern though, and that’s why i asked, is not for me possibly loosing my gold but, if i find that kind enough person, is that they do not get into trouble if the gold transfers are getting big and it gets on Anets radar. Though Anet can easily monitor the transactions between us and see what i do with the money and how the other person got the gold in the first place. Off course it could be the other way round and the person turns out to be a cog in the goldseller business, but i still have enough faith in humanity left to not see a hungry bear around every corner.
LOL Finally it might even be in their own best interest, because if i decide to learn to play the TP i might just become a seriously dangerous competitor haha ;-)
It’s not a matter of them needing my gold, it’s about i pay them for something they are (very) good at and i’m not and for something they enjoy doing and without any risk to them. I can have my money invested and managed for me in real life in return for a commision or percentage of the profit why not have someone do the same for me in a game.
Just for an example: I give them 50g and they make it into as much as possible within X amount of agreed time for which they get 10%. If for example they manage to make a 1000g out of my 50g that’s 100g for them and 850g profit for me. All the risk being on me in potentially loosing 50g max and them nothing.
Even for a big player a 100g is still quite a lot i imagine.
And as said this is apart from any trust issues, I dont see anything silly about it. It’s just a matter of what Anet thinks about this since it could be seen as perhaps player-player trading outside of the TP and potentially large sums of money changing hands for what seems like nothing in return or some other violation of the user agreement.
This is so stupid….
I love roaming around with my ranger just because the pet pulls all the aggro and I never get hit. Rangers can run from one corner to the other without entering combat because the pet pulls all the aggro instead.
Plus, the ranger class is supposed to make use of the pet, not play without it. Pet is a big advantage too, because you can focus on 2 enemies at once in WvW/PvE.Anet already said that they won’t make perma-stow available and sure, the pet is not so strong without points in BM, but it is still a percentage of full damage. A warrior is a stronger glass cannon than a ranger without a pet because ranger has attacks that buff their pet.
For those who are annoyed by the aggro; switch pet and all aggro will be lost.
Anet also said that they are working on the ranger.
Releasing a “quick-fix” that allows perma-stow does not fix anything but rather just pushes the problem aside.
@Synda Raines
A car can break down on the first corner for many reasons, and the majority of those are the buyer’s fault.
You are also ignoring the fact that cars of the same model are the same. Either all the cars break down or none.
Let me be clear that i have all the faith in Anet that it will be fixed and that they are really putting in alot of effort. And i wont stop playing my ranger as so many apparently have. I will admit that perhaps i’m looking at it to much from the GW 1 point of view where beastmaster was truly great and fun to play. But right now it is’nt (yet).
But the important thing is admitting that it’s broken in the first place and the annoy factor is very high for the majority of players, it does not do any good for the ranger as a class. A quick fix will certainly not push aside the problem but by providing this temporary fix they show that they really care and It will buy them credit and time to fix it and outshine themselves when they release a real fix.
As for the car breaking down is the buyers fault part. Believe me, when a brand new car straight from the showroom breaks down at the first corner it is not the buyers fault. Having worked at a car dealership i can also confirm that:
“that cars of the same model are the same. Either all the cars break down or none”
is untrue. Not wanting to go to much off topic, but 2 cars with vin numbers identifying them as build on the same day in the same plant and both sold new. One doing 90k kilometers within a year without so much as a broken lightbulb the other being send back to the factory after 5000 kilometers because it unexplainably broke down 6 times within those 5000 kilomters and the owner being offered a new car of the same model that he still drives, this time without a problem, 6 years later.
have someone play the TP game for you?
So i did’nt know before a little while ago that there are people playing the Trading Post, I see the term Gold Wars mentioned alot and people apparantly making tons of money out of it. fairly easy of you know what you are doing.
Since i have no desire to do or learn this myself i was wondering if it would be illegal and possibly get you banned if you would find one of those good TP players that really enjoy it, give them x amount of your gold as starting capital and have them play the TP for you in exchange for a share in the profit or a fixed commision?
Not talking about the risks involved as far as player to player trust is concerned and loosing the initial investment or not knowing how much gold is really made.
The biggest problem i see is that there are automated scripts to recognize large gold transactions? So assuming at some point the gold starts rolling in and regular ?large? transfers are made how will those transactions be treated by Anet? Would you have to constantly explain it to them and will they accept this construction.
The whole pet system is flawed and as long as they dont function properly we need a perma stow and no penalty for doing so. I’d even suggest a compensating perma buff for having the patience to keep playing a broken class.
I really wonder how Anet is getting away with it, it’s like buying a brand new car and it breaking down at the first corner after delivery or a new television and it not working after you installed it following the factory instructions. No manufacturer in the world will get away with it without providing a brand new product, free repairs or some form of compensation.
Also I really dont get how Anet screwed this one up. I accept their idea about the ranger being a pet focused class, i really like it, but how on earth did they screw it up so completely while It worked so well in GW 1. They dont have any excuse for the gamebreaking design flaws because the proof it can work great is right under their noses in GW 1. It wont be as simple as copy-paste the GW 1 pet code but they sure as hell know very, very well how it should be done.
It also has nothing to do with l2p. I want to learn to play very much but there’s really no point at the moment.
As a software tester i understand the immense complexity of programming and how changing what looks like just a very minor 5 minute solution issue can potentially crash the whole system. I can live with it knowing the game is barely 8 months old and it will get fixed eventually, it took 8 years to make GW 1 almost perfect. What i cannot live with is the silence from Anet about what they are working on. It’s called customer care.
All we want, i think, is to hear a simple: We are releasing a quick fix (perma stow option without penalty) with the next update, that will stay there untill we can really resolve the issue, but that will probably take 2 years from now.
The beauty of GW 1 & 2 besides the f2p is you can basically be as good as anyone without putting crazy amounts of time in it.
atm i play alot, but that can change and i could not logg in for a month or 2-3 or play perhaps only 10 hours a week. I can do that knowing that when i return i will not be at a disadvantage because i missed out on the new and better gear and will first have to spend all my time grinding & upgrading it to be on an equal level again, with the risk of by the time i finished there’s new gear so i have to start all over. Off course my skills will be rusty and i probably have to get back on track on new “builds” but that’s easy compared to having to spend tons of hours doing things i dont like. Grinding dungeons or whatever.
I do understand the lack of content for hardcore players. But also dont forget that eventually you will run into this in almost any game. (Perhaps the only game that does’nt have this problem is South Parks Heroin Hero ;-) ) and the fact that GW is barely 8 months old. There will be new content, just look at the current map and there will be new expansions. Even if they released it all at once, say all the content the size of GW 1 as it is now after 8 years, i guarentee you within a month or 2 someone is complaining about lack of endgame content.
Having said that, did you guys play GW1, you did’nt mention it? because that might be a really good challenge for you with all the expansions readily available and all the things to do.
Park a another zerg between there spawn and the keep
Nothin wrong with centaurs. I’d probably role one to and it has nothing to do i’m a horseman myself. They fit into GW lore, Zhed has already been mentioned. And just look at Greek mythology, though they are not the most reputable race, Chiron plays a very important role. I’d even bet Zhed is directly inspired if not a copy of Chiron.
It would’nt be any problem designing armor for centaurs either. Just google medieval horse armor or armored centaur. You dont need leg armor, in fact, though the legs are the most vulnerable part, armoring them would seriously hinder movement. So they could easily compensate that with significantly higher health & toughness but a standard penalty to cripple attacks. A standard 5 sec longer on cripple attacks. And the movements. well most are already there, including a cool charge and skid attack. I dont see why it would be any more difficult then the ranger swirling sword/axe attack, an Asuran floating in the sky waving a sword in someones face or that rotating greatword swirl attack.
So yeah there you have it, technically no problem, lorewise no problem, but i hope they dont get introduced untill the next expansion and all the bugs, technical issues and balances are ironed out in the game we have now.
@mangomonkey
That’s the problem with pets at the moment. There are situations you stow your pet for a reason and you want it to stay stowed because all it does is die and slow you down. It’s all about those situations where it’s indeed as useless as a chocolate fireguard but you cannot do anything about it.
They simply dont work as they should. The ai is simply to slow or to stupid to control them for the moment.
They had it right in GW1 why did they screw up from the start with GW2.
Hey Kaboose saw you moved it here and to Guru2, will not use Guru2 anymore it’s a troll free for all over there anymore. I saw in fan generated there is the plea for steeds. Being from gw1 myself, I ran everywhere. There were no wp’s in PvE. I really do not want steeds, at least for a year or longer. Let them iron out other issues before they throw another wrench into the mix. Honestly if we never got steeds I’d still be OK. In my generation we walked a lot as kids in rl, the newest generations now wants to become virtually lazy.
While i agree that mounts shouldn’t be rushed and everything else should be ironed out before they get added, I have multiple good reasons for steeds or mounts and yes, i did walk too when i was younger.
1) Mostly cosmetic
And by the word ’’mostly’’ i mean it could give something like a 25 – 30% movement speed bonus. Think about how would things like legendary mounts look. Faction mounts, mounts recieved from instances etc.
This could be something really, really epic.2) Something other to farm and achieve other than PRETTY gear.
Seriously now, i have achieved my epic level of coolness, not the only thing missing in my opinion is a motorcycle from my charr. I’m literally sick and tired of having nothing new to look forward to in… anything. Always gear, which in the end, looks the same and makes no difference what so ever.I just want a really cool hard to get mount with what i can boast to other people and be all like ‘’LOOK AT MY AMAZING STEED, LET YOUR EYES FEAST ON IT.’’
Because that’s the only reason to farm in this game really. There’s just no variety in farming anything anymore. I’m bored.
3) I don’t have use up the kitten skill slot to run 25% faster outside of combat.
Covered in point 1. I seriously hate to run annoying short distances, specially on my newer characters.
4) No real reason not to have them.
It adds immersion
It fits the lore
It adds variety to the endless grinding
It creates life (Stables in the cities, guards patrolling on horses)
We already have cars and whatnot at the black citadel.
Some classes don’t have a passive running like rangers or thieves.
Cosmetics! Which the game is mostly about. While i do agree that they should not add mounts before everything else is ironed out.
And if implemented in a bad way, it could be a bad influence in the game but it, in my opinion, it’s rather hard to get it wrong. Not to mention the reasons not have them which people have thrown around are really useless shouts which have no substance of facts, just their opinion based on something like ‘’some games did it first’’.
I mean, at the moment, the cities look really bland with everyone standing around and we have empty stable like areas which are not in any use in multiple areas. Not to mention not having mounts seems to me just a huge step backwards.
It doesn’t make SENSE.
They could add something like:
- Only usable mounts in areas where you fully explored everything.
- Shared on characters
- Because i’m sick of running some areas twice. It’s mind numbing and annoying.
- Drive your friends around!
- Not usable in PvP.
Agree with the second to last
-Drive your friends around
Dont agree with the last option
-Not usable in PvP
I want one of those Charr tanks for WvWvW roflmao or some kind of halftrack design. Pack a bunch of players in it with fixed weapon positions and drive to support unload , smash & drive out again.
But seriously, i dont really see how mounts would fit into GW2, the areas just are not really suited for them like, for instance LotrO. However I can relate to the grind for a really rare one and show off factor.
Nonsense:
Having 400 in crafting (light, medium, heavy) armor and having to pay some NPC to repair it for you!?
Thoug i like the idea of ladders, at least now it takes the zerg a few seconds to build some rams or cata’s and take down a gate/wall. Imagine if they could just drop 20 ladders and swarm over the walls.
@Omne,
That’s assuming guilds are stable. What happens when a guild disbands, people leave because of arguments, internal struggle. Would they keep the command tag, they could be very good commanders? If they keep it once they get it i can see people working their way into a guild, convince them to research the commander tag for them then leave again. Leaving the guild with wasted research points and a little less faith in humanity.
We need 2 New “sub” commanders:
Lieutenant (limited number active on map)
Sergeant (limited number active on map)
And:
Commander active on map limit
Give each commander a different colored icon
Give each Commander general map chat with text in his/her icon color
New separate command channel for Commanders, lieutenants and sergeants only to report and to give & get orders to each other.
Commander UI showing, players, parties, positions & supply numbers as a bare minimum.
Maximum of the 3 command ranks on the map with the icon active:
2 commanders
6 lieutenants
12 sergeants
Sergeants can form parties of 10 players max, sergeant included.
1 Lieutenant can partie with 1 – 3 sergeants max.
2 lieutenants can party with 3-6 sergeants max.
3 lieutenants can partie with 6-12 sergeants
Commanders can form parties with 3 lieutenants max and/or 6 sergeants max.
(based on an estimated 150 player per map per server player limit I read about somewhere. If fully organized this would leave 22 spots free for a few 2-5 parties, solo roamers, JP-ers)
This would need 20 different colors total for the icons flooding the minimap. So much easier and less polluting for the minimap: The 2 commanders are always visible to everyone. Lieutenant & sergeant icons are only visible for players if they are in a party with them.
Sergeant icon would always be red since the players will not see the icon of any of the other 11 sergeants, only the sergeant and the 2 commanders on the map. When a lieutenant joins, the icon will transfer to the lieutenant and back to the sergeant when he leaves. When you have 3 lieutenant and 12 sergeants party up there are only 3 different colors for the lieutenants needed + 2 for the commanders.
Parties do not need to be disbanded, only sergeants can disband the base parties but Commanders and Lieutenants can simply join and leave disregarding the maximum of 10 players including sergeant party size.
The maximum party size on the map would be:
1 commander
3 lieutenants
6 sergeants
54 grunts
times 2
Or any other combo within the fixed limitations. For instance 1 commander could also join with 6 sergeants without a lieutenant present.
Some servers probably already have a similar organization set up somehow, but I think Anet should have provided us with this in the first place. The benefits would be tremendous imho for everybody and this might even do something about zerging. If you have 12 sergeants = 120 players roaming the map in small groups, capping what 10 man can and scouting at the same time. Commanders & lieutenants can easily focus on the bigger picture and have optimum feedback. Commanders can react on the information they get from the field and can order lieutenants to form up with 2 or more sergeant in the area to quickly aid somewhere or exploit a tactical situation which requires more coordination. They can take command of troops themselves to coordinate quickly and when things are going well, leave it to the sergeants or lieutenants to finish while they speed on to adress the next tactical situation. All they have to do is click the next party in the command UI and join it to take over direct command. Leaving it to the sub commander when things are under control.
This would also provide a learning ground for future commanders since they could grow from Sergeants via Lieutenant to Commander. Or if they feel happy being the sergeant they can keep doing just that.
To successfully deploy this every player who has bought the commander book should be given the choice once: Keep the commander rank or get a refund and a 1 time reduced price to buy one or more of the other 2 new ranks. Something along the lines of for instance:
Give up commander and:
Make 2 toons lieutenant or 4 sergeant.
1 lieutenant and 2 sergeant toons.
After that:
Sergeant book is 30G
Lieutenant book 150g
Commander book 400G.
Now you will probably say, if it’s gonna be 400g, I’ll keep my commander title. But do not forget about the active on map limit. 2 per map, 4 maps = 8 commanders at any given time. I’m guessing here, but on most servers there are already enough commanders to cover every map 24/7 with a decent sized Dorito zerg!?
Like in real life armies, the higher the rank the less of that rank there are hence the 400G price. Plus commander is not account wide at the moment limiting people to playing 1 toon. But how many would gladly swap that commander icon if they can, as I suggested as an example, have multiple lieutenants and multiple sergeant toons instead.
Don’t focus on the player numbers I mention they are mostly for example.
Would this be playable and a welcome change to WvWvW? What are the pros & cons, will this benefit gameplay, will it ruin it for small servers or improve it for them or will it give already strong servers an even greater edge.
Flame away….
That was some fun yesterday. And the days before, I really see no reason to complain this match up. Ok for some GH’ s night coverage is annoying, but its an inherent to wvw.
Special thanks to Dzagonur for the turky shoot yesterday evening outside your garrison gate opposite Quintin rofl. 3 Ballista, some ac’s and a Cata and you guys just kept coming. I Got close to 40 lootbags and even 2 rares. I dont know what you guys & galls where thinking.
Mossy,
Have you ever taken a look at the Elder scrolls games. It is i think the most modded game there is, with probably the biggest modding community out there going all the way back to Morrowid. If you have the 3d moddeling knowledge it’s fairly easy to make whole new 3d models and place them ingame. Could provide you with the portfolio Cardstar metioned.
Take a look at http://www.nexusmods.com/ what you can do modelling wise for the Elder scrolls & Fallout games.
Agree with op, it needs to be fixed asap. I mean, tornado’s cause millions of dollars of damage each year irl. Whole houses get flattened, trucks picked up and tossed around like toys. We ele’s should be at least powerfull enough to flatten the walls at SM or blow any gate off it’s hinges in no time ;-) Or even better, pick up an entire zerge (Just imagine it lol) in tornado form and dump them wherever we are when the skill wears of. Dump the zerg like a biblical frog rain for at least 30kcrit damage and every condition in game for 20sec roflmao
Don’t rush it, game has been out for seven months now.
I’d rather have them focus on the class balance and technical performance before working on cosmetics and vanity items.
This indeed, and i really hope they give us better looking in the near future.
However, you have to admit they did a lazy, cheap and lousy job on the armour. I think in this case it’s viable to make a comparison to GW 1. Most of the Prophecies starter armour looks better then anything in GW 2. And dont get me started on the crap Exotic armor. Okay, off course it’s a matter of personal taste but compare any GW 2 exotic, karma, dungeon armor to Prophecies prestige armor. Elementalist flame or stone forgerd, warrior elite templar, necro cultist or necrotic, mesmer rogue or enchanter. Those were worth the grind and gold, loved them.
Then Anet did even better with some of the Factions armor, Shin Jea or the Krytan necro armor, Cantha or Kurz elite warrior. Personally almost all the female elementalist faction armors with elite Canthan & Kurz being absolutely stunning. The mesmer elite Cantha a good 3th and Luxon 4th.
Then came Nightfall, personaly i found those only so so, but still better then anything i have seen in GW 2. Dervish Vabbi or Primeval were nice. Only the assassin Ancient armor is more ridiculous then anything GW 2.
And then to top it all of they gave us Eye of the North. Warrior Norn or Asuran, necro Deldrimor, elementalist Norn, ritualist Asura or Norn. And my personal number 1 Monument female ranger armor.
Luckily I have my heritage armor, to me it comes closest to all the good armors we had in GW 1.
So lets hope Anet redeems itself on the armor front in the future, because we know they can do it, most of us have the proof in their GW 1 HoM.

Loving it so far. Best WvW i had since i started not to long ago. I dont mind staying in this tier with Dzag and RoF for a while. People actually trying to defend their keep. Room for roaming, a few 1v2 (very few tbh but still) wins for my ranger, a lot of close 1v1 fights 50/50 outcome.
It’s a relief after the zerg & getting ganked around every corner fest the last few weeks for GH against Drakar, Far Shiverpeaks & Millers, and the rest that went before. The zerges that do clash this week are pretty evenly matched and i would not bet on the outcome for most of those clashes.
Battles stretch out nicely and go back and forth, some hard won and well earned victories for all sides. Nice to see players actually running back to the fight instead of, what they seem to be doing on other servers, just waiting at a waypoint to form the next zerg.
All in all, though i believe GH is slowly creeping ahead on the scoreboard at the moment (But still 3 days to go, so go for it Dzag & RoF) a very close and fun match and as already said, as far as i’m concerned I personally would’nt mind meeting you next week again.
If you can select a target and can get into spell range i dont see the problem. It’s a stone dropping out of midair you dont need a direct line of sight. In fact if the aiming mechanism was’nt badly designed i’d even say Ele’s should be able (and rangers with Barrage and Engineers with mortars or whatever else similar they have) to drop it straight over the wall in to the inner courtyard of the keep/tower without seeing what’s exactly on the other side. Same as a mortar is specifically designed to fire at a very steep angle and over walls as well as a treb.
So unless this actually somehow exceeds the spells normal range then it should be fixed. Otherwise simply build your siege out of those kind off spells range.
“CrimsonNeonite.1048
Yea I’ve seen groups of people chasing 1 guy for WXP the way you can get it is not quite right, but looking at the abilities they seem to cater towards smaller groups and scouts the hype will die down eventually.”
Lol what i’ve been doing yesterday evening is find a zerg get myself killed a couple of times (Outmaned so no armor repair) then run back and take some shots at the zerg. There’s bound to be at least 10-15 break off and chase you, get as far away as possible staying in range so they keep following and get yourself killed again. LOL 1 wxp for a 2 to 5 minute chase, . Run back repeat. They are to stupid to recognize what’s going on rofl and free game for any small scale group while they try to get back to their zerg.
Yes, in a game you cant execute the spy and eliminate him/her from the game. But it’s a game, so treat it as just another aspect of the game, you can use it against them. Be creative. Do not ask Anet to fix it. Work on it. Isolate the spy, try to track him down, and feed them false info. Counter spy, whatever it takes.
It’s a game, and that is all it is in the end. But understand that it is real people playing the game:
“ kitten sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto”
“I am a human being, I consider nothing that is human alien to me.”
and there is nothing a dev can do to adress it. You can ban 10000 acounts for spying but it will not ever stop certain players from doing it. So be creative, identify them, feed them false info, and beat them at their own game. Smash their zerg at a place of your choosing instead of theirs.
Shooting a spy irl does not stop the spying game, as soon as you shoot the spy his place is already taken by another. Hell, spies shoot spies to make themselves credible. Expose a positive identified spies name server wide. That will force them to leave every guild and make a new character and they will have to start all over again, working their way into a guild and earning trust or go wildcard and play their luck they can pull it of playing pug.
The only thing a Dev can do in GW2 is adress griefing by what i said, give commanders the ability to block players they think, or who are reported by others that they are sabotaging/griefing from picking up suplies for x amount of time.
treat spying as an added factor to the game, making things more interesting and challenging.
The perfect game does not exist. If you want one, then perhaps make one where people can only gather flowers, arange them into bouquets, and give them to other players who enjoy a game where sitting in a big circle, around a campfire in a green gras field, under a rainbow singing kumbaya, receiving flowers from idiots who think gathering flowers and arranging them just to give away for free is gaming.
hmmm, thinking about that, given peoples online sensibility and urge to demand things wihtout thinking, that might just possibly be the next 100 million dollar online game. There’s nothing that can go wrong with that. Probably.
“Spying/sabotage is not “participating in matches in good faith”. It would take a pretty big twist to convince yourself otherwise, even if you’re a perpetrator?”
Welcome to the world of 007
All’s fair in love and war
Yes this is a game, but it’s a fact that spying & counter-spying, spreading misinformation is perhaps the most important part of rl warfare. And it’s real people playing this game.
“ kitten sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto” “I am a human being, I consider nothing that is human alien to me.”
The game itself provides enough lore to make a solid case spying is perfectly acceptable. All i need to say is “Order of Whispers” However much you want to, you cannot seperate WvWvW from the PvE lore.
It’s a very fine line, yes again it’s a game, but you also take on the role you like, if i like the role of an “order of whispers” agent as a PvE-er and i become a WvWvW spy, am i not staying in character, true to the provided lore and am i not participating in good faith for the server i’m spying for. Think about this however immoral you may feel spying is.
The main problem is to determine in game terms what is manipulation, what is grieving and what is acceptable spying behaviour as part of the game of war.
Unacceptable would be to burn supplies building siege equipment at places where they are completely useless and have no purpose at all. For instance Rams at walls or inside the keep, at the supplie camp, anywhere but in front of the gate etc. There should be a way to stop that if it’s spotted. And a good way would be to have a commander tag that player so he cannot take supplies for X amount of time. You deprive the enemy from supplies by attacking supplie camps and dollyaks.
(again, it’s a very fine line, but sneakily putting down a cata, or arrowcart just out of reach of the enemy walls during a siege is an entirely different matter, sneaky, but imho perfectly acceptable for a spy)
Unacceptable and match manipulation would be for a complete guild to transfer or group be paid and go into WvWvW and then do nothing. Depriving others a spot to fight or force them into queu.
Acceptable (And be honoust to yourself, this is a good one)

-This is good, and if it happened to me, yes i’d be kitten angry without a doubt, but i would also laugh and congratulate them on a well planned trick/ambush. That’s the kind off action eventually you look back at, and think. Why did’nt we think of this. Imho that’s a noteworthy lol moment. Next time you send one person in first before the rest follows. Or you make sure you only take the portal put down by a trustworthy mesmer.
This being said, I would never be a spy for another server, it’s something i cannot associate with and combine with how i imagine the classes and characters i play to be, for instance i could never play or even want to play a thief/assassin like character i have nothing with that kind of class characters. Though i did join the “Order of Whispers” in my personall story but that’s just because at that time i thought the orders armor to be the only one coming somewhere close to good looking compared to the rest.
You cannot blame one skill from one class for a basically broken game. As Pendragon said:
“That basically puts the onus on the defenders to have to go outside and defeat a greater force to blow up attacking siege, because they can’t do it from inside their structure, which is kind of the whole point of holding a fortified position”
Exactly the thing that has been bothering me since day one. As a defender you should have double if not tripple range from atop the walls to start with and alot better protection. And taking terrain into account, be able to drop aoe almost anywhere you want within reasonable range. Not having to manouvre the walls, exposing yourself to enemy fire and pulls and pan your camera around to get that one tiny spot from where you can just barely drop your full barrage or meteor right in front of the gate.
Make that so, double hitpoints on gates and put a cap on the number of rams that can be placed in front of the gate. Siegewarfare is lethal for the attackers and alot less so for the defenders. That should be reflected into the game. Yes, numerical advantage will still most probably win in the end. But with decent defense they might not because they simply dont want to commit or are 13 year old ragequiters who never heard of tactics and commiting yourself to a goal. But think zerging is all there is to "online"warfare. And unfortunatly unless Anet does something about it, they are right. Untill Anet fixes it and they get smashed in the face so hard Youtube will be flooded with ragequiting, keyboard destroying 13-15 year olds because they died trying to take a keep defended by 5-10 players only. Really looking forward to that day lol
Don’t think so.
When we took SM yesterday AM was under attack from Millers also. It was a really fun battle, AM got it from both sides and i’ve seen numerous Miller – AM fights. I even teamed up with a Millers player to take out a pesky AM mesmer before we tore into each other after he was killed. The battle went back and forth and became one of attrition we eventually won.
So far this week i have seen both AM & Millers break of engaments or leave GH players alone to rip into each other first. I dont think there’s any alliance or agreement. It’s just very close this week. There is also the matter of time of day. More people are on in the evenings so that’s when you see the zerges. And yes, if you just got ganked by AM and 5 minutes later Millers it might seem they have an alliance. But look at it from Millers or AM’s side. They just got ganked by GH and 5 minutes later the other shows up to gank them again.
Now if i was AM or Miller i’d say GH was teaming up with the other.
So far this is my best week in WvW, though i’m only there since a short time, with good fair fights and “normal” players on the other side.
With FS you could not roam around carefully trying to take a vista without being pounded on time and time again. This week i helped (and he/she helped me) a Millers player get a skillpoint after which we departed with a polite bow, and took a Vista occupied by AM. Came in waved, they waved back. Walked up to the vista took it and left with another polite bow. Now i’m pretty sure later that evening it was the same player at the vista i fought at SM and who kicked my kitten
Now that might also just have been players there just for the poi’s, skills & vista and not caring about WvW. But still, it’s an even and fair match up imho and i’ve seen no evidence of an alliance.
Log in to WvW often and cap/steal what you can just running in on a occupied poi, stay around and join the fight. Be carefull around skillpoints, if it’s a fight skillpoint and enemies are also around doing the skill point trie your luck and engage the skillpoint boss. I got several this way in the beginning when I went to WvW for 100% completion and we departed with a polite bow after we both got the skillpoint.
If your lucky you can get WvW completion in 3 weeks simply because server rotation will put you on another map each week. if not so lucky it might take 4-5 weeks you will rotate eventually. But that was in Gunnars Hold, cant really comment on the WvW state of other servers but the basics remain the same.
It’s indeed getting worse. I have been monitoring my PC and even at heavy complete freeze lag my CPU and ram are not getting past 50-60% and other programms are happely running in the background at full speed. Turning them off does’nt help one bit. In fact running the bare minimum does not change a thing including the lowest graphic settings. It’s not my PC setup though it’s not high end but it does run for instance Skyrim at Ultra High without to much stutter problems, and absolutly flawless on just High settings.
last resort is more then doubling my internet connection from 30mb/sec to 80mb/sec.
Anet cannot keep blaming it on the players end. For instance, I dont see much difference with GW1 Lions Arch and GW2 lions Arch (ok it’s bigger & more detailed, but it’s a city with only players running around, no mobs, only mostly stationary npc’s, no spell effects and hundreds of players firing of skills) . I never had any lag in GW1 LA or anywhere else for that matter, in GW2 i avoid LA like the plague.
Well i have not been in WvW for very long, in fact i’m only playing GW2 for about 6 weeks now. I did play GW 1 for about 6 years but hardly ever went into PvP or the Cantha PvPE areas.
I first went into WvW for 100% completion, and since have not done much PvE lol. I like it despite it’s numerous flaws.
Firstly i have no ambition becoming a commander myself because i dont want any online obligations. If i want to play i play, if i spend 3 weeks in a row playing from 18:00 till 01:00 weekdays and 16 hours during weekends i do. If i get fed up with it and dont play for 6 weeks. That probably wont go with serious WvW dedication.
Now i do have some observations about commanders and things i have been thinking about the last few weeks.
Make Commander at least 500G + XXX badges of honour
Right now any idiot with enough money either ingame or to buy gems can become a commander.
Upgrade to Commander rankings with something of a point system by WvW achievements or to be voted on by guilds who is the best or most respected commander.
Limit the amount of commanders that can be active on a map. Every next commander that comes online after X commanders already there automatically becomes a Squadleader. It’s up to the commanders on the map themselves to have another one voluntarily step down to squadleader if this new commander is a higher ranking one.
As stated already by others give commanders the tools to “command” Display player levels, player supplies, status reports on gates etc.
Have them be able to form 50 man parties which get it’s own colorcode on the map and also show player names in that color so players dont go rushing off behind the wrong commander. To many times already i’ve seen 2 commanders come in with a group to support and one commander ends up with half the players following the other commander after the battle. I made that mistake to a couple of times it’s an easy one to make and it becomes worse the more commanders are on the map.
Commanders need to be able to mark points on the map in the color of their party and to set target priorities or goals 1-2-3 that can be seen by all others on the minimap. Also this way the party members know the route they are going to take and if downed and need to port back know where to go and take the shortest route.
Give commanders those different colors to map mark so players know which commander just set a priority target. If it’s commander Y who put the mark and they are with commander X they dont need to respond unless commander X orders so. This way players do know something is going on and be prepared to stop what they are doing and assist if commander Y asks X to come over to help. That way more casual WvW players not on Mumble, TS etc, also understand why they suddenly break off when the gate is at 15% and rush of to somewhere else.
Integrate a “one way” teamspeak feature only commanders can log on to and use to communicate to each other and which players on that map can only hear. That way there’s no obligation for players to install 3th party programs or join an active WvW guild and their TS. Simply turn “Commander” talk on in the sound options instead of music and listen to the orders. No need for commanders to type orders in the chatchannel and get chatflood and they know 99% of the players gest the order.
Lastly, a scout line in the chatpannel where players not in a party can report enemy movements, then it’s up to the commander closest to respond or not, either by sending his own scout to kitten the situation or immediatly reply in force. At the moment alot of calls get lost in the map or say chat.
These are just a few rough ideas i have about making WvW an even more fun place at times to be in and also draw in more not WvW oreinted players because they dont feel lost from the start and think they have to be in a big guild to join WvW and contribute.
As an Ele i can confirm it’s perfectly possible to imobilize vapor form downed skill. If the opposition thinks of it. If not, well it’ s vapor form. Off course i can get back into the keep. Technically all i need is a keyhole. Same as for going over a cliff in mistform. As long as the spell is still up i cant get hurt on the landing. If it stops one inch above the ground though i’m dead.
Nothing wrong with the zerg. Apart from the culling and lag, if you are caught in the field alone or with 5 by a zerge your toast. Would not want it any other way. If I’m stupid enough to wander around like a headless chicken thinking i can cap points on my own without anyone bothering me i deserve to be zerged and ganked.
.
What needs to be fixed though is the aiming from walls. It’s ridiculous that as an Ele or Ranger i have to manouvre like crazy, while under heavy fire, to find that one spot from where i can drop my AoE spells. I’m high up on a wall, my range should be at least twice as far as normal. And from the back of the ramparts i should only have to pan my camera view to be able to drop meteor or barrage or any other dropskill right in front of the gate or further out. Same goes for the aiming on siege euquipment, mainly arrowcarts. Make walls transparant when you use one, so you can see where you aim. It’s not at all impossible to aim almost straight up and have the arrows land right on the other side of the wall.
Give a defense buf on the wall. I’m not invincible but i’m sure as hell alot safer up there then the attacker down on the ground. In a siege the attacker is always at a disadvantage, it’s why we build castles in the first place. Let them come and suffer if they want this keep.
Double hit points on gates or minimize the amount of rams that can be placed in front of it.
This will still place the zerge or any larger force at an advantage in the end, simply because they can wear the defenders down with no chance to return once killed. But they cant take a castle in minutes aymore. They will have to commit and be prepared to be tied up longer then 2-3 minutes. 5 man knowing what they are doing should be able to hold a keep at least 5-10 minutes againt 6 to 1 odds. Enough time to call in reinforcements and if any for them to arrive.
This is’nt ideal because it will very probably make things harder for less populated servers and less WvW active ones. But a buff based on numbers could be apllied. Your outmanned and get a “last stand Buff” Determined to stand against the tide, bonus % applied according to the number of enemies.
And vice versa. an “overconfident buff” for the attackers. Your large numerical advantage makes you overconfident and thus more reckless/careless, you are twice as likely to be hit by critical hits.
Well at least something like that to even the odds, and reflect that a small force in a castle that knows what it is doing can easily hold a keep heavily outnumbered for at alot longer then is the case now.
