- Since Anet heard and resolved this issue, I will return next week for the Winter Event. While it will be a few months before I start spending money on gems again (since I bought a whole slew of other games on my break from GW2), I am glad that Anet took care of this issue. My faith is now partially restored.

1. That is me in a nutshell. I have pretty much stopped playing. Before Lost Shores, I would spend 3+ hours each night on GW2 since launch. I am just popping in to see if Anet has said anything about having more exclusive, one-time events (which I hate).
2. I stopped playing after Sunday of the Lost Shores event. I was annoyed that I missed out on loot and experience because I had family obligations.
3. I am not playing GW2 anymore because I do not invest time in games that do not respect my time and money. I consciously spend money on transactions partly to support Anet financially (and get more bank space). But, if they are only catering to people who are online at Friday and Sunday afternoons (Pacific Time) then I am not meant to experience these events and will move on. I am not rich in-game and a 20 slot bag and exotic earring just rubs salt in the wound as well. I wish Anet told us in advance that they were going to do these types of events. Had I known, I would not have bought the game at all.
I hope we will get an announcement on these 1 time events soon. It would help me to know whether my break from GW2 will be permanent.
As I posted before, this months gem money went to buy Xcom. I am taking a break from GW2 as long as they are going to continue with these ridiculous one-time events. I loved Halloween. Halloween was one of my very favorite events. But, Lost Shores is the worst event I have experienced in an MMO. It is so horrendous that I am actually stopping my support for GW2. The handling of Phase 3 goes beyond taking two steps back. I do not know how many customers are as disappointed as myself, but there must be enough to warrant a response.

“Unless you have a good in-world explanation for how a lighthouse can be destroyed, re-built, and destroyed again twelve times in a day? Or how about the massive amounts of destruction that were necessary to drive the ancient karka back into his lair?Face it, sometimes having something happen ONCE is the only way it’s going to make sense. You can rationalize it as being all about the players and maybe that’s fair to say, but you can’t possibly rationalize it from any sort of in-the-world sense. And that’s precisely why they’re doing one-time events in the first place: to make changes to the world that people can witness and say “I was there”."
Firstly, if a MMO is not supposed to repeat content, then why do dungeons need to be repeated multiple times in order to purchase gear? Somehow the bosses magically come back to life, forget whom they were killed by, and have an extremely limited vocabulary? Part of playing a Massively Multiplayer Game has always been the suspension of disbelief with regard to repeated content. It is that way for a reason, and this is not something that Guild Wars II should try to change. If repeated content ruins your personal immersion in the game, you can choose to ignore it.
Secondly, honestly I don’t think there would be nearly so much drama if the reward were being able to say “I was there.” Even if you got a unique skin or mini-pet, that would seem more fair (leaving out, of course, all of those people [myself included] who were disconnected and/or locked out because of server-side issues). However, the disproportionate nature of the rewards when compared to the rewards for events involving a similar time commitment is fairly staggering, and to say that the reason more people were not given access to said rewards was because you can’t blow up the same mountain twice is rather silly.
A proposed solution: if Guild Wars II is committed to such events only happening once ever, make the event an instance that can be run solo, duo, or in any size group. Make the instance scale in difficulty to the number of people who participate in it. And make it accessible once per account, period. Make the instance available for 24 hours if having it done and complete on all possible accounts in one day is of vital importance to the structure of the game.
Thank you. Great post.
I really hope that Anet takes advantage of this learning opportunity and listens to all the fans that supported this game for the past 3 months. I honestly feel that it is a nail in the coffin for me if they come out congratulating themselves and being blind to the large number of excluded, unhappy and frustrated customers who were literally singing their praises a week ago. Lost Shores is a game-changing mistake for me. I love GW2 but I am just tired of these one-time events and lop-sided rewards. I have nothing for all my participation in Phase 1 and 2. But, just because I have family obligations, I am completely shut out from the big events and rewards (assuming that lags and bugs would not have stopped me first).
I love the game but taking a break because I really dislike the one-time events and will wait and see if they are continuing with this trend. I honestly do not see the value in having customers miss out on content because they have RL responsibilities. Now that we are months into GW2, it goes without saying that everyone looks forward to content. It is the reason I bought gems to support Anet. And, the reason I am stopping for now. I hope Anet will give us an idea if they are going to continue down this path of excluding customers. Until, I hear different, I am not putting any more money into GW2. My gem money this month just went to XCom. I am really curious where it will go next month.
All I want for Christmas is NO one-time events (or make them simply fun like in Halloween). I am on break from the game now because I really dislike this shift to one-time events. I just do not want to invest any more time and money in a game that forces its customers to choose between RL and experiencing new content. I already missed 3 one-time events. I just do not understand why I must be excluded because I have responsibilities at 12 noon on a Friday or want to see family for a Sunday Dinner.
I agree with OP. In a slightly related topic, I would like to know if GW2 is going to continue with one-time events. My issue with one-time events is similar to short time-limited events. I really disagree with limiting them to one-time or one-day. These events are generally buggy and time restrictions just exacerbate the issue of exclusion. I support this game and look forward to experiencing content. Having the GW2 Team tell me when I can play is unreasonable on its face and just mean when you add-in bugs, lag and d/c’ing.
Thank you for this thread. I also implore Anet to stop doing one-time events. I may not live outside the U.S., but I live in reality where my family and work come first.
Just saying again. Can’t stand the one-time events.
I am taking a break as well. I hate this shift to one-time events and bugged quest lines. Already posted in another thread but I hope that Anet sees the dissatisfaction with how they executed Lost Shores.
I am not giving away my stuff in the event Anet decides to move away from content like Lost Shores.
I can’t stand one-time events. I am going to take a break from the game. I continued to invest time and money (via gem purchases) into this game and will now stop for the time being. I make purchases in the gem store each month partly to show my support for Anet. I look forward to experiencing new content and having to decide between this game and spending time with family is just not what I anticipated. For the first time, I am really disappointed with the direction of this game. This is the second one-time event that I missed. The bottom line is that no customer should continue supporting a business that does not serve them. They get my $60 and the money I paid through the Halloween event. That is fine. But, it is safe to assume that I will always put my family ahead of these one-time events and so, I am going to stop here and look for something else. I hope the rest of you have fun.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents and say that the CT is my favorite of the Halloween Activities. This was the first real challenge that I have experienced in an MMO for some time and I really enjoyed it. I hope you will do more like this. My only suggestion is to remove the randomness of having everyone start in a group. I finished the CT on my Asura the second time and the disadvantage of being a small character model was very noticeable. Not that I was not able to overcome it (and it felt great) but I really empathized for my other Asuran brothers and sisters. Anyway. Great Job!
P.S. I think I actually was buzzing when I reached the top and waited for the clock face to spin around a second time. Good Times…

Thank you very much, Mr. Prometheus. I really appreciate you taking the time to lay out your thoughts on the Mesmer. I learned a lot about a profession I already love. Also, big thanks to Tjirp for letting the rest of us know on the forums about your insights. Cheers.
