AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE performance

I still have a 955BE but the pins got bent while in the plastic case during transportation (took it with me to my other home to throw into the second PC) but I played GW2 for a good amount of time on a X6 1090T and it struggled in WvW. My Intel handles WvW much better.

Unfortunately, GW2 is still very single-threaded, that’s where AMD loses out on.

Guild Wars 2 Crashes a Lot & Mild Stuttering

Teknobug.3782

GW2 doesn’t crash for me, just stutters alot now. I haven’t played in quite a while (since last spring) and somewhere along the timeframe an update changed its performance. I didn’t change any graphics settings and the game ran great with everything maxed out before but now stutters until I turned down shadows and shaders and set effects LOD. I also went from an HD7850 1GB VRAM to a R9 280X 3GB VRAM which is a decent upgrade.

Also watching task manager, GW2 is still very heavy on 1 core and ~25% on the rest of the cores. By now I would’ve figured A.net fixed multithreading with this game, but I guess not.

specs in sig (game is on a 240GB SSD).

Unhappy with being forced to change password

Teknobug.3782

I had a unique password that was mixed with letters and numbers that isn’t used anywhere else and when I went to launch GW2 I got a prompt forcing me to change the password I couldn’t think of another password as good or better than the one I had so I used a password that I already use elsewhere, and then I tried changing it back to the unique password and it wouldn’t let me because it shows up as “already in our list of stolen passwords”… what?

I’m the only one that uses this account, and I haven’t logged in it since December and I know there’s been no hack attempts on this account because it even has an email account that I only assigned to this game and nowhere else.

Anyone with the new AMD piledrivers have results?

Yes I upgraded from a Phenom II X6 1090T (OC’d to 3.8GHz) with 4GB DDR2 ram but still using the same video card, the max fps hasn’t changed that much but min fps has gone up, I don’t get low spikes anymore. GW2 doesn’t scale too well across multiple cores but since I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 8 due to a dying hard drive I notice slightly better multicore scaling.

4GB ram and a quad core AM3 CPU can do fine, you didn’t list what kind of motherboard you have. The Phenom II 955BE and 965BE or 960T’s (unlockable to 6 cores) are still floating out there.

Also I installed Windows 8 yesterday as my Windows 7 HDD died and the game seems to scale across multiple cores better than it did in Windows 7 for me, I’m not getting FPS drop spikes anymore. How strange, gonna see how Planetside 2 plays since PS2 capes 1 core like crazy.

How good is that FX 8320 in WvW tekno, i understand u clokced it to 8350 speeds, what board do u have? Did u set game afinity to 1 core per module? Sorry for all this questions but those chips look very intersting to me hehehe (even tho 8 cores are uselss for games, it is pretty awesome u know),so i wanted to ask

It’s pretty good and rather comparable to the Phenom II X6 1090T and 1100T chips, right now there’s not many things to take advantage of 8 cores so disabling the odd number modules (down to 4 cores) gives you a boost in certain games (like GTA4 and Skyrim). I’m glad I skipped the Bulldozer chips, those were terrible (I built a few systems for people with those chips). The FX 6300 is actually a good chip too and fits right in where we are now.

Yeah go for the 8320, costs less than the 8350 and can still OC to 4.8GHz, I’m not big into overclocking as I used to be (I used to overclock dual 533MHz Celerons to 1.1GHz and such).

PS- another thing, Windows 8 doesn’t take advantage of the FX chips, even if you disable cores/modules, it acts like it has them enabled. Until then, stick to Windows 7 and the FX patches if you can find them, eventually Microsoft will come around to fixing the FX optimization for Windows.

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

Teknobug.3782

I do not like ascended gear because I do not want to have to farm new WvW gear every balance update AND tier update.

Let WvW use pvp gear or put a fork in ascended gear… or both…

I just don’t get comments like this.

What I see is: I get to level 80, get all the gear I wanted then sit and pvp/WvWvW or run dungeons for the rest of the games lifespan and have no new goals to strive for.

How is that fun?
I really don’t get it!!!!

Because we can sit down, log on and do it. I pvp alot in this game, more than anything else- pvp is why I got this game where gear doesn’t matter. I’ve played the same FPS games for years, I’ve also played many MMO games for years and the ones I’ve stuck with the longest had good pvp and little to no gear treadmill, ones with the gear treadmill I last maybe 3-6 months. SWTOR is a prime example of that, when they did away with champion and centurion gear and added another tier of gear and added craftable BM/WH gear with a chance of an augment slot and then punch everybody in the face by releasing an augment kit after that- that’s the most blatant treadmill there.

Sorry, but not every game that has a gear progression is a wow clone.

Number 1, pvp in gw2 is not influenced by gear progression.

As long as you have that, it will never be a wow clone.

Please stop using wow as a reference for all things MMO ty.

Almost every MMO game in the past 5+ years has tried to copy WoW in one way or another, so far GW2 and TSW hasn’t and GW2 seems to be succeeding pretty well because they brought something different.

I noticed that with many 1600MHz ram, most motherboards seem to set whatever DDR3 1600 you throw in as 1333 and you have to manually set it to 1600 (or 800).

I was doing some overclocking tests so I set my ram to 1333 so I can change the CPU-NB which adjusts the ram speed at the same time, I played a few games @ 1333 and didn’t notice any difference from 1600. you’re either seeing a placebo effect or changed something ELSE.

My other system with has a Phenom II X6 1090T and 800MHz DDR2 played GW2 at almost the same FPS as I’m getting on my current system now, same video card.

The laptop APU’s consume way less power than the PC APU’s, the A10 5800K with the integrated 7660D video for the PC runs GW2 fine (played it a little on one back in October), but the laptop A10 4600M could play GW2 but you’ll probably have to lower the graphics settings.

My Toshiba laptop with the AMD P360 (2.4GHz) plays GW2 in pve fine but all settings to low @ 1366×768, I’ll get sub 10fps in events and pvp. lol

The Thuban X6’s has a little more horsepower than the Denub X4’s do, that’s not really an upgrade aside going from 2.8GHz to 3.4GHz. Do you have an AM3+ motherboard? If so then look into an FX 4300 or 6300.

My X6 1090T plays the game well, the halloween event made it miserable for EVERYONE, but it’s better again. The Piledriver is a significant jump in many categories.

Metalphreak, 30fps is decent for most, don’t be spoiled by needing +60fps, as long as the gameplay is smooth @ 30fps it’s playable, and no it’s not a mess to the eye, are movies @ 24fps a mess to you?

Why Orb Removal Will be Very Bad for WvW

Posted by: Teknobug.3782

I do WvW because I like pvp, not because I want 3 orbs to overpower my opponemnts.

I really want to see just how good these dominating servers are now. My necro in WvW has 33K health and can hit hard with 3x orbs, now we’ll be on an even playing field… or is that what the OP doesn’t like?

I remember weeks ago we held off a keep for 3 days or more from the leading server, we didn’t need orbs to do that and it was a blast.

That’s if Magic find gear worked. Ran cursed shore for 2 hours yesterday with 3% base magic find on all my gear except my staff, superior pirate runes in 5 pieces of gear for 25% MF and 1 yellow pirate rune in the last piece for an additional 7%. All my accessories have 3% base and +3% MF on upgrades. On top of that, I kept up my Omnomberry bars the entire run. Didn’t get one yellow drop.

It works, my mesmer has magic find gear and I run around the Orr, granted the yellow drops don’t come down like rain but I’ve gotten a few each time I log in. Don’t spend all day doing it though or you’ll hit the dreaded DR.

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Teknobug.3782

Teknobug.3782

I was talking about right after the Oct 1 and 7 patches, not the halloween patches.

The picture below was taken early Sept, see how the GPU was being used (with ~300MB ram used) without any FPS issues, second pic taken after Oct 7 shows much lower GPU usage but higher ram usage and higher overall CPU usage resulting in less consistent FPS.

Oh and here’s a quote from someone on the Planetside 2 forums:

Don’t know what happened, but my GPU is suddenly ~90% utilized and I got ~60FPS now. Good Job!

The patch improved performance, I’ll be messing with it tonight.

@Slark.1263
With all respect You have no idea what my CPU/GPU usage is and ur writing kitten as hell.

First of all it’s Ivy brige which gives 10-15% increase in performance from Sandy brige, second of all my CPU usage doesn’t go over 78% – this was max % i’ve saw during around 30 man WvW.

My GPU on the other way around Sits on 99-100% all the time, which means it’s bottlenecking.

And first of all consider that for some ppl spending a 250$ for CPU only it’s massive amount of cash. for that 250$ I had my CPU&MB&DDR3.

Well I’m not sure what to take of what you’re saying, before the Oct 1 patch, in most places around the game including LA my GPU was 75-90% usage with excellent FPS and CPU sitting around 40-45% which can’t be bottlenecking but in WvW it goes the other way around resulting in annoying fps drops (more CPU than GPU). After the Oct patch my GPU never passes 60% and CPU hits 95-99% on 1 core and I get CRAP FPS. Nothing in my PC changed.

Bunker engineer and condition necros are easy to ignore, conditions necros has no place in s/tPVP because of all those condition removals, and lol… bunker engineer? What’s he gonna do? Bunker elementalist and guardians are more annoying.

Most players that plays bunkers tend to guard points, make them fight you and PULL them out of points when you have teammates arriving, I love spectral grasp for this reason.

The shatter mesmer and backstab thieves are what you worry about the most, and since they roam more than guard, keep them occupied or they’ll be a problem when you cap points.

The Piledrivers are better than the Bulldozers, the 6300 shows improvements over the 6100 and is actually passing the Phenom II X6’s.

Reasons why I skip first gen of AMD new releases.

Blizzard and ANet didn’t sabotage their games to run worse on AMD. AMD sabotaged itself when it released CPUs with abysmal performance-per-cycle.

Not really, AMD keeps up with Intel on many games according to some benchmarks I’ve seen over at Overclockers, Tomshardware, Anandtech and etc, like Skyrim, Dragon Age Origin, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Battlefield 3 (kind of irrelevent since that’s a GPU bound game), etc. but with WoW, i7 and i5’s goes about ~100 fps higher than the AMD’s rather than ~5-15 fps above AMD on other games.

Better for Leveling? Condition or Power

in Necromancer

Teknobug.3782

I have 2 sets of armor, one with toughness/vitality (and rune of earth) and another set with power/condition with some precision and I only lose ~2000 health and ~300 toughness/armor and I kill things MUCH faster with the power/condition suit and eventually I respec’d to power/prec 30/20/20/0/0 traits from my original 0/20/30/20/0.

Go with power for leveling, I leveled with toughness and sometimes it takes forever to kill some mobs. If your main weapon is scepter then invest in some more condition and let feast of corruption (scepter #3) do the rest of the work.

sabotaged? Are you implying Arena, for unknown reasons, put code in to run slower on AMD? That makes no sense to me.

Blizzard did it with WoW, strangely that game runs way better on Intels.

Oh another that says “I don’t get below 50fps in WvWvW” post, I’m not buying it. iMetalliX said he doesn’t drop below 60fps, but didn’t state what system he has.

Also back in early Sept I recorded this video I put up on Youtube, back then I was able to get ~35fps (drops below 25fps while video is recording) with the system in my sig but after the Oct patches I can barely pass 20fps in the same fight as in the video.

You’re just going to get other i5 users telling you that they’re not sustaining 50fps while in pvp.

The score is just beyond ridiculous, 545K vs 42K vs 36K.

And I counted the bots in YBB, over 70 bots that’s taking up valuable queue and they’re mostly in the water near Garrison and up in the NW corner at the skillpoint location. I bet it’s similar on other servers, I wish people can just go in there and kill them.

Looks fine, but not sure about Corsair RAM, look for Geil or G.Skill.

You should be able to OC that i7 to 4.5 or 4.6GHz with a Hyper 212+ heatsink.

The lowest FPS i get is about 40.
it still sucks..
My PC’s worth around the 1.6k$, and there’s a problem with the game that I paid 60 bucks to play with 60 FPS only. (Can get used to play with around 40 FPS in crowded places).

40FPS in crowded areas is very respectable in an MMO. Remember, MMO’s and regular games (even multiplayer games) are two very different beasts.

One thought did occur to me however, if all you max out at is 60 FPS, you might have the frame limiter enabled in game. I did when I first started playing and it did the same until I disabled it. Now I max out at times in excess of 100 FPS (occasionally).

I’ve got 16 in WvW, now that is not respectable from a gtx 680 and i5 2500k 4.2. Anet must fix it now.

Ouch, before Oct 1 patch I was getting over 30 fps in heavy pvp fights, now I can’t break 20 fps and it’s nearly unplayable.

There is no excuse for GW2 to perform this horrible, SWTOR with max settings gave me 60-80fps everywhere, as far as I know system requirements between the two games aren’t that much different.

iMetallix, mind sharing your PC specs? I don’t believe a word you say.

The FX4100 isn’t that good, and the graphics card isn’t either, the 7850 is a good buy right now and if you got the cash to spare ($120-130 which should be 100 pounds) the FX 6300 (Piledriver) is an improvement.

I personally wouldn’t even touch a 4100/4170/4200/4300, they’re worse than the APU’s. The A10 5800K rips past the FX4300 in many benchmarks.

In most parts of the game it IS GPU bound, but when it comes down to world vs world and DE’s with lots of people around it and even around the mystic forge in Lion’s Arch during the Halloween event- the game decides to shift to CPU and that’s where the majority of players are having FPS issues. I’ve been monitoring both CPU and GPU usage in the mentioned situations.

The A10 5800K is a bloody good chip for its price ~$125, I built a system last week with that chip and it does the job for most things and can run most games at med-high settings (tested Planetside 2 and Battlefield 3 on it), but there are some limitations to the APU such as up to only 4 cores unless AMD focuses on the platform like an APU without an IGP for added cache or cores. A10 5800K with a HD7850 can rip through most games, not sure about CPU intensive games (like GW2 is under heavy traffic). With each patch, the game seems to perform worse and worse on my current system, I don’t see how an 8350 will change that since there’s even i5 users with some trouble.

I wouldn’t even consider the FX 4100/4200/4300 as the performce on that series is worse than even the older Phenom II’s, the 6300 is as low as I’d go besides the A10 5800K. Heck the A8 5600K is also good ($100 for A8 5600K + $60-70 for a low end FM2 mobo + $35 for 8GB DDR3 1866)

AM3+ has passed its limits, there won’t be DDR4 support for it and no chance of PCI-E 3.0, USB 3.0 (some boards has its own separate USB controller), etc. FM2 has a future.

Be careful with these Sweet* programs from those sites, I accidentally downloaded (well it didn’t download but immediately started installing) SweetIM when I went to get Driversweep from that site and I was not happy about that, it was difficult to uninstall and had to do some searching and found out that these Sweet* programs are viruses/spyware.

So… chances are your login/pw is probably out in the open now.

At least now well of corruption and corrupt boon has a better chance of hitting targets. Save yourself should be revamped into a 66% speed boost, because that’s what you’re going to have to do when you pop it.
